Using the collective research produced by the studio, and lessons learned from the precedent modeling, we developed a strategical means front loading a polyvalent set of issues: site selection, user/program type, client type, massing parti, precedent, culture, aesthetics, and tectonics. To frame this architecturally we might ask “how do you take something you love (precedent) and co-opt or appropriate it towards something original or unique? It is important that you begin to establish connections between decisions made at the abstract and disciplinary level with those at the contingent level. An optical description of a building lists its physical and aesthetic attributes, its size, material, method of construction and surface effects. A visual one would reveal some underlying structure such as a diagram, historical and political facts. Peter Eisenman reveals the groundwork laid for what would become, as he calls it, the most important debate in the dicipline of architecture: that between the conceptual and the phenomenonlogical. This studio uses the duplex or triplex residential type, as a vehical to explore and address the issues on the table. Both building types occure within specific zoning types, program is based on the idea of these collective ideas.

4B Design Studio Instructor: Russell Thomsen Sonic Texture SOUND Sound is a spatial event, a immaterial phenomenon and an auditive experience rolled into one. It can be described using vectors of distance, direction and location. Every built space can modify, position, reflect or reverberate the sound that occurs with in it. SITE The landscape of this project becomes A visual translation of sound. We recorded at 25 different locations to map out the sound profile over the site. Each sound wave plotted and then transposed on to high density sheet of foam. Each sheet was then layered together forming a series of sharp peaks and valleys. Through a lengthy process of intense sanding a smooth lunar like surface emerged.
AGGREGATION OF SYSTEM Four curves from the landscape were taken to create a single surface, one omponent. Each component connected by a spine creating a line, bone and skin system. The form has a natural synthesis with the landscape. The landscape of this project becomes A visual translation of sound.
