With hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram, Ida Lærke has become an international icon for phone photography. People across the globe tune in to view her still lifes, her clothes, her walks through natural landscapes. Amazingly, Ida is not a trained photographer. She does not own a camera other than the one on her phone, and she has never studied ISO or aperture. The platform of social media has given us the opportunity to appreciate her natural aesthetic vision and skill from our own living rooms.

We met Ida at her apartment, where she welcomed us with Saxo, her young son, clinging to her leg. Within an instant, Saxo was chasing us around the apartment, showing us his recent drawings, and climbing on his bunk bed. Ida’s husband, Lasse, made coffee as we settled into a morning of easy conversation and laughter. Both Ida and Lasse are students with passions outside their university studies, Ida’s in Instagram photography and Lasse’s in cycling—whether it be collecting and refurbishing bikes or leading his young family around Copenhagen and throughout the country on bicycle outings.

This family is tightly knit—Ida and Lasse sip coffee together every morning, and they make meals as a team, with Saxo even helping out occasionally. Among their friends they were pioneers on the parenthood front, which led them to invite friends over more often instead of getting together at a restaurant or bar. They joke about how many bottles of red wine have been consumed around their table with those friends while little Saxo sleeps peacefully in the other room. This bright and airy apartment is the stage on which they have created a community.
