Time to Say Goodbye Only a month left to go and things never seem to slow down. Just back from a very successful District Conference and now getting ready to head to Atlanta for the Rotary International Convention and the celebration of 100 years of The Rotary Foundation.

It has been an honor and privilege to serve District 6930 as District Governor. As I have told many of our fellow Rotarians I will not be retiring my Red All Star Sneakers but give them a brief rest until called upon to be put back into action.

I want to thank all our Rotary Clubs and members for your support this year and your hard work in helping make this year a success not just for me but the district as well. There are no words that can express how much it meant to me every time you welcomed and invited me to be part of your clubs and events.

Looking back at this year of service in Rotary, I see a desire reflected in each of us who have chosen to be part of this great organization. Through Rotary, we have the opportunity to care for and lift up those who need us the most – whether they are in our own community or on the other side of the world.

Rotarians are doing what is needed most for the people who are most in need.

They’re working hard for the communities they care about, helping the people of those communities lead better lives.

We as Rotarians have that hunger to be of assistance, that willingness to work for the good of others. In Rotary, when someone needs help and we can give that help, we don’t walk away. We don’t turn our back. We say, “We are here for you and will do whatever we can”. We know that whatever we do, we are not doing it alone – we are doing it with Rotary Serving Humanity.

Learn to lead through Interact I had already participated in different s e r v i c e projects when I joined Interact in my freshman year of high school. I have been a member all four years of high school, and it has shaped me into a servant leader.

We have undertaken a great number of projects including collecting money to eradicate polio, bringing cupcakes to the elderly, and joining with the Rotary Club of Manchester Noon to clean up local rivers. Perhaps one of the most satisfying to me was joining forces with We Are Neutral to retrofit low income housing.

I plan to work with the local free dental clinic and eventually as a professional dentist in foreign missions through Doctors Without Borders. My participation in Interact has left a lasting mark of positivity and a hope in everything I think, say, and do.

I’ve also taken part in projects outside of Interact, where I have used the leadership I have learned through Interact. The rural Appalachian area where I live is served by a volunteer fire department which is partially dependent on fundraising. I have helped plan and build a haunted house every Halloween, the chief fundraiser for the local volunteer fire department. Even though it required my presence every Friday and Saturday in September and October to build and perform in the haunted house, I felt it was only fair for me to help, as my family and community benefit. We could not get homeowners insurance without the department. We raised over $10,000 with a staff of only 10!

Though discussion of the war was a heavy topic, we also carved out space for fellowship, fun, and bonding. Sharing meals, conversations, games and many hours in a van together allowed us to make some special memories we won’t soon forget.

Some of the best moments of the days included getting to know the Rotarians traveling with us and the Peace Fellow’s daughter who allowed us to indulge our playful sides. I know that each of us are grateful to trip organizer Ken Robertshaw for his enthusiasm, care and attention to detail.

Rotary Peace Fellows from the University of Bradford visit World War I sites in France and Belgium Earlier this month, I took part in a tight, four-day trip to World War I battlefields and commemorative sites in France and Belgium with other Rotary Peace Fellows at the University of Bradford (including one Fellow’s sweet, energetic daughter!), host coordinators, and a few others connected to Rotary.

I’m from Newfoundland, an island on the east coast of Canada, thus there was a special aspect of the trip that resonated with me: Newfoundland Park in Beaumont-Hamel. On 1 July, 1916, the “Blue Puttees,” the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, fought in the Battle of the Somme. That morning, the battalion was almost entirely wiped out; only 10 percent of troops were available for roll call the next morning. Visiting Newfoundland Park was a powerful and emotional moment for me and I’m grateful to have been able to visit.

RC OF VERO BEACH SUNRISE AND RC OF VERO BEACH EARN VOCATIONAL SERVICE PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARD The Rotary Club of Vero Beach Sunrise and the Rotary Club of Vero Beach earned District 6930’s VOCATIONAL SERVICE PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARD. The clubs’ winning project involved providing dental and school support services to residents of the city of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. The club has sponsored this project for a number of years. A detailed description of the project will appear in a separate article in the June edition of QUEST. Kudos are also in order to the RI District Grant program and our district’s management of that program. The Vero Beach project was made possible in part by a $2,900 District Grant.

The District 6930 VOCATIONAL SERVICE OF THE YEAR AWARD was instituted by PDG Juan Ortega during his year as district governor. The full list of clubs recognized by this award since its inception is: 2013-2014 RC of Boca Raton and RC of West Palm Beach for their full menu of vocational service projects covering all 5 areas of service.

2014-2015: RC of Boca Raton West for its pioneering approach to classification talks RC of Downton Boca Raton for its Honor Your Doctor Luncheon RC of Palm Beach Flagler and RC of Palm Beach for the BriteSides Road Safety Project 2015-2016 RC of Downtown Boca Raton for its Boca Raton Mayors Ball project.

2016-2017 RC of Vero Beach Sunrise and the RC of Vero Beach for the Dominican Republic Dental Clinic and Educational Aid Project.

Nominations for this award can be made by any Rotarian and are selected by the districts Vocational Service Committee. Projects selected for the award are chosen for their relevance as role model projects which other clubs in the district might consider.

RC Boca Raton Sunrise Since 1974, RMHC has created programs that strengthen families during difficult times. RMHC provides vital resources and compassionate care to children and their families being served by leading hospitals worldwide.

The Rotary Club of Boca Raton Sunrise, Serves breakfast every 3rd Saturday of the month to the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) in Fort Lauderdale. Helping making the children happier and healthier.

On November 18th, 2016, The Rotary Clubs of Boca Raton Sunrise and Sunset sponsored their First Annual Rotaract Club of Lynn University Winter Wonderland Concert. It was a free entertaining program for very ill children, their families and the staff.

Both young men came in 1st place for their speeches given at the state of Florida competition and thus will be travling to California to compete in the national Future Business Leaders of America competition.

Volunteering has been the vehicle of hope that I’ve used to connect myself to the world.

When I volunteer, I meet new people, make new friendships and learn about new cultures.

In 2016, I initiated an international non-profit organization called IVolunteer International. It is a registered non-profit organization in the United States. IVolunteer International strives to elevate the quality of human life across the Ambanpola, second from left, packing globe by connecting individuals with volunteer 10,500 food packets for Haiti with projects around the world. Hei! My name is Brittany Muhammad and I am currently attending Lake Brantley High School.

I am sixteen years old and a sophomore in high school. I have lived in three different states but originally from Chicago, Illinois where most of my family lives. When I travel to Chicago my favorite thing to do is always to play in the snow with my friends because it reminds me of my childhood. I am genuinely fortunate to have been born into a large family who supports me.. I will be spending my 2016/2017 studying abroad in Finland! I believe my exchange will be full of captivating memories and much more. Being selected as a Rotary Youth Exchange student will not only change my life by helping me view the world from a different perspective but also by encouraging me, even more, to grow into a respectable individual. I am excited to see what the future holds for me on exchange. My desire to do exchange started when I met a couple of exchange students at my school. If it had not been for me meeting my friends who are on exchange to Florida, I do not believe I would have considered such an amazing opportunity as this one. I have always aspired to do something that would impact my life for the better and being apart of Rotary Youth Exchange makes my aspiration ten times better. I intend on going to Finland with an open heart and a mind to learn. An opportunity to do exchange is considered life changing and full of adventure.

Journals: Britt – Finland 2016-17 Moi, Nimeni on Brittany. I am currently an outbound right outside the capital of Helsinki, Finland. I have been on exchange in Finland for about four months now. So far, my exchange has had its ups and downs but way more ups than downs. đ&#x;˜Š Being on exchange is one the most amazing experiences that anyone could possibly do in their life. I have well over enough friends, although you can never have too many Absorbing the Finnish culture has been precisely interesting. Building such astonishing relationships with all three of my host families has been wonderful. It is hard for me to sit back and wonder what life would be like if I hadn’t come on exchange, because for me, it just isn’t possible. To sum up these past four months would include me to type up tons of pages but instead I am going to tell you all about the best parts. My favorite parts of exchange so far has been all of the traveling I’ve been doing even if it means only i n Finland and also bonding with the people I love the most. đ&#x;˜Œ Rotary has put together so many tours for us exchange students to go on TOGETHER which, so far, have been awesome. In November, a group of Rotarians and Rotex’s took majority of us exchange students on a tour of Lapland, Finland (the Arctic Circle) for a few days. I did so much stuff for the first time in my life. I went downhill skiing, I saw reindeers up close and went on a Husky dog sleigh ride, I met Santa Clause, and so much more.

A couple of weeks after my Lapland trip, my Rotary district took us on a Stockholm, Sweden cruise. I feel so very fortunate and blessed to meet the people who continue to change my life for the best. Being on exchange is eye-opening and an opportunity everyone should take, if possible.

CITY OF LAKE WORTH Is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States, which takes its name from the body of water along its eastern border, originally called “Lake Worth”, and now generally known as the Lake Worth Lagoon. The lake itself was named for General William J. Worth, who led U.S. forces during the last part of the Second Seminole War. Lake Worth is a coastal city of 37,000 residents and 7 square miles, located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The Atlantic Ocean and the broad waters of the Lake Worth Lagoon form the city’s east boundary and the beautiful fresh waters of Lake Osborne its west. Next door to Palm Beach, it is situated

along the latitude making the northern most point of the subtropics. Lake Worth is truly the place “where the tropics begin” and the fun never ends.

Lake Worth is a dynamic, multi-cultural city with a strong social and environmental consciousness. People are drawn to the city by its independent character, acceptance of different cultures and lifestyles, many historic structures, hip downtown, and distinctive residential neighborhoods. The city has a rich history and is protective of its historic architectural fabric. Over 1,000 historic buildings contribute to the human scale and charm of the downtown and residential areas.

The City is the geographic and artistic center of Palm Beach County. The downtown is considered the artistic soul of Lake Worth with a historic theater and a museum, live music clubs, coffee houses, art galleries, antique malls, retail stores, and many restaurants.

TESTIMONY The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards was an extraordinary experience. It gave me the chance to meet so many new people with their own unique stories.

I got to see deeper into the lives of other people, and I became inspired to grow stronger by the stories they told. On one of the days, we took a Walk of Courage and stood up in front of our peers to talk about issues like drug abuse, LGBT, and fatal illnesses such as cancer. I was amazed at how strong everyone was, to be able to stand up in front of everyone and talk about some of the terrible experiences they have faced, and how they managed to overcome some of these issues. We all supported each other and cried together, helping those who were in pain and offering hugs and words of comfort to each other.

One of the most important lessons I learned during those few but life changing days at RYLA was how to share my own stories and not keep my grievances to myself. I learned how to open up and surround myself with people who will support me through my hardships. I know now that I am not alone, and there are people all around me who care about me.

Rotarian Story

From Rack Card to RCBR President As I was placing an order for business cards at Boca Graphics in Boca Raton I noticed rack cards in a holder. I picked one up, read the information, and decided to call the phone number on the card. Claudia DuBois responded and invited me to lunch at The Rotary Club of Boca Raton. One call from a rack card changed my life.

I was born in Independence, Missouri soon after World War II. I attended public grade school and high school in Kansas City, Missouri. After attending Central Missouri State College for two years, I decided it was time to see life beyond home and accepted an opportunity for employment in Chicago. I was employed as a computer operator and analyst (in it’s infancy). Two years later, I accepted a promotion and moved to San Francisco. I worked full time and attended California State University at Hayward to complete my BS Business Degree. My graduation now gave me the opportunity to work in the financial securities world, my dream.

After 5 years working as a Financial Advisor and Head Options Trader, I accepted the opportunity to move to NYC and Wall Street. My passion was always sales and trading securities derivatives. This was my opportunity. Five years later I founded HRFerguson Financial Consulting firm which allowed me to live anywhere.

bucket list until my daughter decided she would attend Lynn University to learn to fly airplanes. In 2010, I decided to move to Boca Raton. No matter where you live it is nice to have friends. I had made only a few acquaintances in Boca Raton.

I had no idea what Rotary was about. I had seen the wheel in my travels. We all know as Rotarians, Rotary is the best kept secret.

My Rotary story begins with friendship. As I visited the club for lunch, I was greeted with open arms. As I sat during lunch with open ears, I realized that these were professional people with a passion to serve. This was not coaching little league baseball or sitting on a Boy Scouts Board, as I had. Their goals were to significantly impact the world and the community.

My values in life have always been integrity, respect, and excellence. Where I had a cavity, was community service.

Service Above Self truly resonated with me.

I was astounded to hear that Rotary International was involved with the Bill Gates Foundation to eradicate Polio worldwide. I had personally seen the devastation polio inflicted on individuals during my teen age and young adult years. I am so proud of Rotary for tackling such a horrific disease and for me to be a small part of this world goal.

As I listened to those who participated in Happy Dollars, I am thinking “do these people have jobs”.

Helping Hands, Place of Hope,

Cat Island, OPAL, Future Stars, etc., where do they find the time?

I have learned Rotarians create time for their passions.

These projects not only are important to the community but more importantly, to build the friendship amongst club members and the feeling of satisfaction that no matter how small, we have added value to our community.

From Rack Card to President, amazing. As I prepare for my Instillation as President of the Rotary Club of Boca Raton, I often think back at that day, that I decided to attend the luncheon meeting. I did not know one person or what a Rotary club was.

I also had no preconceived ideas about what I was looking for. As I tell visitors and friends, take a deep breath from your daily routine. Do something out of the ordinary, challenge yourself.

Rotary is an organization very special! I have found my new family, find yours.

Time To Say Thank You! Dear Rotarian, This is our last edition of Quest 2016-2017!

It has been a great year in our District, filled with so many different milestones and even more amazing projects. The world is truly better with District 6930.

I can say this with affirmation because as I have been faithfully making the newsletters this year, I have seen firsthand the amazing passion and willingness to serve of our Rotarians. You are all inspirations and I want to thank each of you for what you do for our District.

I would like to thank our Governor Eric Gordon for the invitation to be responsible for the District newsletter and for believing in my project!

I would like to thank each of you that encouraged me to carry on with your loving emails!

I would also like to thank those of you who, throughout the year, sent me articles, flyers, invites, and photos of events so that I could publicize and share with each Rotarians what we are doing throughout the world.
