Mission statement

Our mission is to inspire the global community by championing Icelandic values that foster: a culture of conservation, of people and environment; gender equality in business and society; a reevaluation of the role of clothes through our concept of Úlpa.

Which entails living with fewer garments that work harder for longer.

As we approach 100 years, we look forward through transformation as we explore the úlpa not just as outerwear, but as a symbol of circular thinking, a reflection of the values that have shaped our work from the very beginning.

Entering our 99th Year: A Moment of Reflection and Resolve As we step into our 99th year, the act of writing this sustainability report offers a rare and valuable pause, a moment to reflect on our progress, challenges, and the responsibilities we carry as stewards of a nearly century-old brand.

The past year has deepened our commitment to accountability and sustainability. With our recertification in 2025 and our centenary just a year later, we find ourselves balancing forward momentum with mindfulness, assessing our impact while building resilience for the future.

We remain grounded in our heritage and by owning much of our value chain we are able to preserve traditional know-how and ensure our garments meet the highest standards of durability, multifunctionality, and repairability.

Limitations in Scoring Due to Absence of a Living Wage Benchmark in Iceland

Challenges in Scoring Due to U.S.-Centric Framework

One area where our assessment score is negatively impacted is the “living wage” criterion. This presents an opportunity for improvement, as the absence of such a standard prevents us from demonstrating our actual wage practices in a way that aligns with the assessment framework.

While we believe our performance in several areas should warrant higher scores, we face limitations due to the U.S.-centric nature of the certification framework. These structural differences can result in outcomes that do not fully reflect our actual practices or local context.

The scores in this category should be interpreted with these caveats in mind. They do not necessarily reflect a lack of action or commitment on our part, but rather a structural limitation in the assessment methodology when applied to the Icelandic context.

We continue to monitor developments in this area and remain committed to transparency and fairness in our compensation practices.

For example, Landsbankinn - our primary banking partner - is not recognized as a local bank within the assessment because it has branches more than 300 km from our headquarters. This definition does not align well with the geographic and demographic realities of Iceland, where population density and infrastructure differ significantly from those in the U.S.

Similarly, we receive limited points for local sourcing. The assessment evaluates local sourcing based on proximity to our headquarters in Iceland. However, we actively prioritize local sourcing at our production sites- for instance, we source materials locally and within China when working with Chinese manufacturing partners.

This approach supports local economies and reduces transportation emissions, yet it is not fully acknowledged in the current scoring model.

These examples highlight the need for more flexible and globally inclusive assessment criteria that better reflect the diversity of business models that take into account the regional contexts.Overall and despite these limitations, we remain committed to transparency and continuous improvement in all areas of our sustainability work.

Environmental Scoring: Gaps in Data and Contextual Challenges

In these cases, we rely on internal evaluations that are not formally recognized in the scoring system.

Our environmental performance score reflects both our current practices and the limitations of the assessment framework in capturing the full scope of our efforts—particularly in areas such as water use, product certification, and life cycle analysis.

In the water category, our score is impacted by several factors that do not reflect the Icelandic context. For instance, we lose 1.6 points for not harvesting water on-site or using recycled sources—practices that are largely irrelevant in Iceland, where water is naturally abundant and clean. Additionally, we do not regularly test water quality, as this is unnecessary given the exceptionally high quality of Icelandic water.

We currently hold certifications at the material level, but not at the full product level. While this demonstrates our commitment to sourcing responsibly, it results in lower scores within the assessment. Similarly, we have not conducted formal Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) for all products. LCAs are feasible for core, long-term styles such as our NOOS (Never Out Of Stock) collection, but are not cost-effective for short-run or seasonal styles.

We acknowledge that there is room for improvement, particularly in developing a formal water reduction plan. However, it is important to note that the current scoring system does not fully account for the unique environmental conditions in Iceland, which limits the accuracy of the assessment in reflecting our actual environmental impact.

The evaluation highlights several areas where we are performing well, particularly in our commitment to responsible sourcing, employee well-being, and environmental stewardship. Our strong internal processes, ethical business practices, and focus on long-term product durability align closely with the values of the B Corp movement.

At 66°North, the journey of every garment begins with choosing the right materials — a process rooted in responsibility, performance, and transparency. As a Certified B Corporation, we hold ourselves to high social and environmental standards, and that starts with the fabrics and trims we use.

All materials, from shell fabric to lining, insulation, and trims, must be REACH compliant and PFAS-free. We actively prefer textiles that carry leading certifications like Oeko-Tex®, Bluesign®, GRS, RDS, RWS, Nordic Swan Ecolabel, and/or Seaqual certification, and we encourage the use of recycled and mono-materials whenever possible to support recyclability and circular design.

Quality and durability are non-negotiable. We only approve fabrics that meet rigorous testing standards, including color fastness and pilling resistance. Every fabric must include detailed information, test reports, and certifications before approve it for our garments.

The PFA’s status

At 66°North, caring for people and the environment is at the core of everything we do. That’s why we’ve made the decision to phase out PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) chemicals traditionally used for water and stain resistance, from our production.

As of now, all new fabrics we use are PFAS-free, marking a significant step toward safer, more responsible manufacturing.

Importantly, this shift does not compromise the performance or quality of our garments. We continue to deliver the same durable, high-functioning gear designed to withstand Icelandic conditions, now with less environmental impact.

At 66°North, we repair and mend up to 500 garments every month, helping our customers extend the life of their gear and reduce waste. Our skilled team handles everything from minor fixes to major repairs, keeping clothing in use and out of landfills.

Packaging At 66°North, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact throughout all our processes, including packaging. All of our garments are packed in individual polybags to protect them during shipping and storage. We use recycled plastic polybags and ensure that they are either recycled or reused after the garments are unpacked. This is part of our commitment to supporting a circular economy.

In our stores, we offer customers paper bags made from thick, recycled FSC-certified paper (C143320) (both the bag and the strings), which allows the bag to be recycled or reused. With this, we aim to reduce waste and provide more sustainable options for our customers.

We also offer textile bags that can be reused multiple times.

These bags are very popular in Iceland and are often used as everyday bags, for taking clothes to kindergartens, swimming ,gym bags, with the larger ones even being used for duvets when traveling. By using these bags, we promote reuse and reduce waste in everyday life.
