For the tenth issue of Free Athens, we invite you to discover the Greek capital from a different perspective; on board its trolleybuses, buses, trams, metro lines and suburban railway. Public transport is inseparably linked to the rhythm of urban life. For us, however, it is much more than a means of getting from one place to another. It is a guide. Through its routes, starting points and destinations, it offers a unique opportunity to experience the city and uncover its many layers.
For visitors, these journeys can become far more than a practical way to travel. They are an invitation to step into the everyday life of Athens, observe the city as it unfolds around you, and connect with its landmarks, local businesses, neighbourhoods, people and stories.
This issue is therefore both a practical and imaginative city guide – one that moves beyond the conventional format of a tourist handbook. Instead, it invites you to explore Athens through its routes and connections, leaving maps, apps and screens aside, if only for a while.
Inside, you will find 20 selected routes using public transport! 20 different ways to experience Athens beyond the obvious and discover the city from a fresh perspective! Enjoy the ride!
P.S. The routes featured in this issue do not necessarily begin at a line’s official starting point or end at its terminus. For each transport line, we have selected a section of the journey that we believe offers the most interesting experience for visitors. All routes start from a location in central Athens, making them easy to access while showcasing some of the city’s most fascinating sights, neighbourhoods and stories along the way.

The Epigraphic Museum of Athens houses one of the largest collections of ancient inscriptions, offering a unique insight into public and private life in antiquity. Its collection includes more than 14,000 inscriptions, mainly from Attica but also from across the ancient Greek world, dating from the 8th century BC to Byzantine and later periods. Written primarily in ancient Greek, the inscriptions provide invaluable evidence of the history, politics, religion and everyday life of the ancient world.

Of great historical importance are the Tribute Lists of the First Athenian League (478–404 BC). These mon umental stone inscriptions, erected on the Acropolis after the league’s treasury was transferred from Delos to Athens, recorded the annual offer ings dedicated to the goddess Ath ena by the league’s member cities. They provide valuable evidence of Athens’ political and economic power

026 BUS from Exarchia to Votanikos
22 stops 50 minutes every 35’
This is one of Athens’ most authentic urban bus routes, as it passes through some of the city’s most significant and diverse spots. Starting in Exarchia, it travels through Syntagma Square, continues to Monastiraki and crosses Keramikos before reaching Votanikos, a district that remains largely untouched by tourism and retains a distinctly local character. What makes this route special is the way it showcases both the famous landmarks and the lesserknown corners of the city centre.

The George & Aristea Mamidakis Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting contemporary art and culture, supporting artistic innovation, and encouraging lifelong learning through educational programs, initiatives, and collaborations. Through its activities, the Foundation engages both children and adults with contemporary artistic practices while fostering a dialogue among art, society, and research.
Established in 2019, the Foundation’s International Art Prize supports artists from Greece and abroad by offering the opportunity to create site-specific works that become part of its important public art collection. The collection is displayed across the Sculpture Garden at Minos Beach Art Hotel and the grounds of Minos Palace Resort, a beautiful and fully accessible seaside environment where visitors can experience contemporary art in nature, at Agios Nikolaos, Crete. Since 2022, the fully funded Research Residency Programme has brought together artists, curators, researchers, writers, and cultural professionals for collective learning, experimentation, and interdisciplinary exchange.

MITROPOLEOS STREET IS ONE OF THE MOST CENTRAL AND ELEGANT STREETS IN ATHENS. IT TAKES ITS NAME FROM THE METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL OF ATHENS. A RIDE ALONG THIS STREET OFFERS A WONDERFUL INTRODUCTION TO THE ATMOSPHERE, ARCHITECTURE AND CHARACTER OF THE STREETS SURROUNDING SYNTAGMA SQUARE.

THROUGHOUT THE ROUTE, THERE IS ONE DETAIL WORTH REMEMBERING: THE ACROPOLIS IS ALWAYS THERE, RISING ABOVE THE CITY ON YOUR LEFT, SERVING AS A CONSTANT REMINDER OF ATHENS’ EXTRAORDINARY PAST.
As you pass through the street, you will be surrounded by remarkably well-preserved neoclassical buildings that line both sides of the street. Among the most striking is the building that houses the Electra Metropolis Hotel. Although not neoclassical itself, it is an architectural gem. Right beside its entrance stands the tiny Church of Agia Dynami (Holy Church of the Sacred Power), a historic chapel dating back to the 16th century, built on the remains of an ancient sanctuary dedicated to Heracles.
A little farther along, the scale changes dramatically as the Metropolitan Cathedral comes into view, together with Mitropoleos Square.

The Historical Archive of National Bank of Greece (HA/ NBG) was established in 1938. From then onward, the institute’s aim has been to safeguard and promote archival material of historical significance held by the Bank. Since 2002, it has been housed in the renovated Megaro Diomidi, a modern architectural monument built in the 1920s. Today, it serves as a multipurpose cultural and documentation centre, open to the public.

The Hellenic Motor Museum is a must-see attraction in town! It is housed in the post-modern CAPITOL complex, designed with an Art Deco aesthetic, evoking the spirit of New York. Displaying cars from the 20th century, the museum presents 112 exhibits in a 3,000 square-meter space. Visitors ascending the spiral staircase, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s in the Guggenheim Museum, from the street to the main exhibition space have the opportunity to also see an uninterrupted exhibition of about 72 wheels, from ancient times to 1985.

Connecting Omonia with Syntagma square is one of the most vibrant commercial streets of Athens, lined with shops and historic buildings. At its midpoint lies Klafthmonos Square, while inside the Korai Arcade, housed within the National Insurance Building, you can explore the profoundly moving 1941–1944 Historical Memory Site, which served as a Gestapo detention centre during the Axis occupation of Greece.

Also known as Kallimarmaro, the Panathenaic Stadium is the only stadium in the world constructed entirely of white marble. It carries great legacy, having hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Today, it serves not only as a monument but also as a venue for large-scale cultural events.
The National Technical University of Athens (Polytechnio) on Patision street is one of the city’s most historic architectural gems. Beyond its unique neoclassical beauty, the complex is inextricably linked to modern Greek history, as it became the epicentre of the November 1973 student uprising, a pivotal event that contributed to the eventual fall of the military dictatorship that had ruled the country since 1967.

Syntagma Square, the heart of the capital, owes its name to the Constitution (Syntagma in greek) that Greece’s first king, Otto, was compelled to grant following the popular uprising of September 3, 1843.

Right in the heart of Athens’ historic centre, the European Centre – Contemporary Space Athens occupies the ground floor, mezzanine, first and second floors of a beautiful building dating back to 1895. Dedicated to architecture, design and visual arts, it regularly hosts international exhibitions organised by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum for Architecture and Design and the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies. The ground floor also features exhibitions by Greek painters, lectures and conferences, plus a Design Store with carefully selected art and design pieces. Admission is free. Pagrati takes its name from the ancient sanctuary of Pangrates Hercules (located at the corner of Vas. Konstantinou and Vas. Georgiou B avenues), while in the 19th century it was known as “Vatrachonisi (Frog Island)” due to an islet in the Ilissos River that was full of frogs.
Its Grove, established in 1908, remains a vital green landmark of the city to this day, even though during the Axis occupation its zoo was destroyed and many of the trees were cut down for firewood.
Today, Pagrati blends history with modern city life. Long known for its artistic character, the neighbourhood was once home to legendary composer Manos Hatzidakis, and its creative spirit is still alive today. Its lively streets are filled with cafés, bars, and restaurants, while at night Pagrati transforms into a vibrant and highly popular hive for dining and entertainment.

Due to the combination of archaeology and contemporary art in my studies and interests, the scope of my tours includes classic guided tours to archaeological sites and museums with the official license of the Ministry of Tourism. However, I mainly enjoy thematic and curated tours for children and adults that focus on the connection of archaeology with visual culture, contemporary art and fine art events. Thus, when I welcome friends and relatives to Athens, I try to offer them an immersive experience of walks in Athens of contemporary art. Our walks start from the historical district of Thission, next to the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Hephaestus. We visit art spaces such as The Bernier-Eliades Gallery, MOMus-Alex Mylona Museum and the Herakleidon Museum, where we can enjoy the museum experience through museum-pedagogical programs. It is a neighbourhood so lively where children and adults will never get bored and when we get tired of walking or gazing, we can sit in the vibrant cafes and restaurants for food, coffee or a drink with a view of the Acropolis. Athens as a chaotic city of contrasts offers a lot and we locals love and enjoy it for what it is, a palimpsest from ancient times to the present day!

Discover the Athenian Riviera from a unique and unforgettable perspective
A CATAMARAN CRUISE IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA, BUT SPENDING A DAY WITH SAILING ADVENTURES ALONG THE ATHENS RIVIERA TURNED OUT TO BE ONE OF THOSE EXPERIENCES YOU KEEP TALKING ABOUT LONG AFTER IT'S OVER.
I joined the cruise with two friends, Theo and Thanasis, and from the moment we stepped on board, it felt less like a tourist activity and more like being welcomed onto a friend's boat. The smiles were genuine, the atmosphere relaxed, and within minutes we had completely switched into holiday mode.
Captain Panos and Konstantina were fantastic hosts throughout the day. Professional, friendly, and attentive, they somehow managed to make everyone feel looked after. Αnswering questions, sharing local knowledge, or simply making sure everyone was comfortable, they added a personal touch that made all the difference.
The catamaran itself was beautiful, spacious, and impeccably maintained. There was plenty of room to stretch out
in the sun, chat with friends, or simply sit back and watch the Athenian coastline drift by. Over the course of the 5-hour cruise, we stopped at gorgeous swimming spots with crystal-clear waters that were impossible to resist. Between swims, we enjoyed a freshly prepared delicious meal on board (Thank you, Konstantina)!
What made the day special wasn't just the stunning scenery or the comfortable boat. It was the combination of great company, hospitality, excellent food, and that wonderful feeling of being out on the water with nowhere else to be.
If you're looking for a different way to experience the Athens Riviera, Sailing Adventures offers exactly that: a relaxed, authentic, and genuinely memorable day at sea.

051 BUS

Bus 051 leaves the chaos of Omonia behind and soon reaches a stop that feels like a glitch in time. Plato's Academy is not your typical tourist Athens, it's where Plato founded his school in 387 BC. Now, ancient marbles frame picnic spots and kids games. Here locals gather for coffee and conversation, blending history with everyday life on the city’s quieter western edge, surrounded by hidden gardens and modest apartments.

Karaiskaki Square (or Metaxourghio Square)
WELVOME TO ONE OF THE FEW ROUNDABOUTS IN THE CITY – A REAL CRASH TEST FOR THE GREEK DRIVER. FORGET EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT TRAFFIC RULES. TRAFFIC JAMS ARE ETERNAL, MAINLY BECAUSE LEARNING HOW A ROUNDABOUT ACTUALLY WORKS FEELS LIKE A DIRECT BLOW TO OUR NATIONAL IDENTITY. IT’S CHAOS IN A CIRCLE, AND IT’S COMPLETELY GREEK.
Avdi Square: Born from the ruins ACCORDING TO LOCAL ACCOUNTS, THIS SQUARE WAS FORMED BECAUSE DURING “DEKEMVRIANA” (DECEMBER UPRISINGS) –THE VIOLENT CLASHES OF DECEMBER 1944 THAT ARE CONSIDERED THE “PRELUDE” TO THE GREEK CIVIL WAR (1946-1949)– POWERFUL EXPLOSIONS LEVELED THE BUILDINGS HERE, LEAVING A HUGE VOID THAT NOW HOSTS THIS LIVELY SQUARE.
Metaxourghio is one of Athens’ most vibrant and authentic neighbourhoods. Known for its long theatrical tradition, it is now a lively cultural hub filled with small independent theatres, including some offering English-language performances. The area is also home to the historic LAIS cinema, a landmark for film lovers.
Walking through streets like Leonidou and Keramikou, neoclassical houses meet the remains of old communal courtyards. Today, this landscape forms a vibrant urban mosaic where different cultures coexist, with the lively Chinatown area and Roma children playing near old townhouses sharing the streets with a growing community of digital nomads and visitors. This diversity is also reflected in its food scene, where traditional coffee spots (aka kafenia) stand alongside modern restaurants and authentic international eateries

From Syntagma to Paleo Dimarchio (Glyfada) (change at Pikrodafni)
33 stops
60 minutes
Every 12-15’
Tram is an important part of the Athenian identity. From the horse-drawn carriages of 1882 to the legentary city centre electric trams that operated until 1960, it was once the heart of everyday life in Athens. When it returned in 2004, the tram took on a new role. Today, instead of serving the busy city centre, it offers a scenic journey to the southern suburbs and the Athenian coast. Along the modern T6 and T7 lines, the city gradually gives way to sea views, connecting Syntagma Square with the Saronic Gulf, as well as areas like Nea Smyrni, Faliro, and Glyfada, making it one of the best ways to discover the Athenian Riviera.
TRAM T6 & T7

Arriving in Paleo Faliro, the urban landscape recedes and the seaside views take centre stage. Crossing Posidonos Avenue, tram passengers approach Flisvos Marina with its famous coastal sidewalk, where locals and visitors enjoy the sea and the sunset. With its impressive buildings, curated cafés, and direct connection to the sea, Paleo Faliro is an elegant gateway to the freedom of the Saronic Gulf.

Nea Smyrni, is an excellent example of early urban planning with 100 years of history, originally built to house refugees from Smyrna in Asia Minor. Today, the tram stops at the iconic 25-acre central square, one of the largest, fully pedestrianised squares in Greece. A lively meeting point filled with cafés, restaurants, and shops. Within walking distance lies the Grove of Nea Smyrni (Alsos), a valuable 50acre green oasis. Despite its development, the area successfully remains human-centreed and vibrant.

Posidonos Avenue is the coastal highway connecting Piraeus to Voula, with the tram running along its own dedicated lane. Scattered along Posidonos and extending all the way to Porto Rafti, German bunkers from the WWII Occupation still survive ― remains of a time that made Athens inaccessible. Today, the avenue is defined by hundreds of palm trees planted for the 2004 Olympic Games, modern marinas for luxury yachts, high-end real estate and massive coastal clubs that host an entire world of nightlife.

The coast of the Athenian Riviera offers a breath of fresh air to the capital. Stretching from Faliro to Voula and Vouliagmeni, the coastline alternates between free, lively sandy beaches and organised
shores with modern water sports facilities. Clear waters, sunbeds, and seaside cafés offer locals and visitors a true taste of Greek summer, just a few kilometers from the city centre.

Glyfada is the dynamic heart of Athens’ southern suburbs, combining seaside charm with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Its name comes from the slightly salty water (glyfo in Greek) that was once found in the area’s coastal wells in ancient times. Historically, its modern development began in the 1920s as a seaside resort but after WWII evolved into an international centre of interest, shaped by the nearby American air force base and the opening of the famous Asteria Glyfadas complex. Today, wide avenues are lined with high-end boutiques, modern restaurants, and cafés bustling with people all day long. Despite its massive commercial growth, Glyfada retains the feel of an autonomous, vibrant neighbourhood. The green residential areas, easy access to the beach and an iconic golf course make it one of the most attractive and prestigious places to live in Attica.
WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN, THE COASTAL AVENUE TRANSFORMS INTO AN ENDLESS PARTY. SALTY SEA BREEZE BLENDS WITH THE HEAVY BEATS OF MASSIVE CLUBS, OPEN-AIR BARS AND TRADITIONAL BOUZOUKIA VENUES THAT DEFINE ATHENIAN SUMMERS. THIS INTENSE NIGHTLIFE BY THE WAVES CARRIES ITS OWN UNIQUE ENERGY, KEEPING THE CITY ALIVE UNTIL DAWN.

from Polytechneio to Kanaki
18 stops 33 minutes every 10’-15’
You board trolley 3 and the real Athens immediately begins to unfold outside the windows. Patision Avenue doesn't try to impress you. It's loud, crowded, contradictory, exhausting and alive (yes, all at once). This route is not "postcard" Athens. It is a part of our everyday live. Through the windows, you experience the true rhythm of Athens: the chaos between crossroads, kiosks, apartment blocks, bakeries, balconies, cafés, old cinemas, corner stores and public squares that serve as emotional anchors for entire neighbourhoods.

The first major pause is Victoria Square. Once elegant and high-end, now rawer and multicultural, still carries a strange beauty. Elderly Athenians sit on benches beside immigrant families, teenagers circle around on scooters, and the square constantly shifts between nostalgia and urban chaos.
Further up Patision comes Amerikis Square, one of the avenue’s most cinematic points – so cinematic, in fact, that it even became a film. The faded apartment buildings surrounding it once represented upward mobility and urban sophistication. Today, the square feels deeply human. Small cafés, mini markets, the constant arrivals and departures of trolleys and buses and people from different parts of the world blend to create its everyday rhythm.
Then comes Koliatsou Square, sharing much of the same restless atmosphere as Amerikis Square. Traffic here never stops. The wider Koliatsou area was
once filled with cinemas and theatres, turning the neighbourhood into one of Patision’s entertainment hubs. The most legendary of them was Radio City cinema on Patision Avenue, which operated from 1955 until 2003 and became a landmark for generations of Athenians.
As the trolley climbs higher, the smaller Agios Loukas Square appears calmer and more residential, less exposed to the frantic energy of the previous stops. The ride also becomes greener as the dense city centre slowly loosens its grip.
Eventually, the route reaches Nea Filadelfia, where Athens suddenly breathes differently. Trees grow taller, sidewalks become wider, and the atmosphere feels lighter. Trolley No. 3 crosses multiple versions of Athens in one uninterrupted line. Through its windows, you watch the city change square by square.

This space was used as a parking lot until 2008, when the lease expired. At that point, Exarchia Residents’ Initiative, along with other citizen movements, occupied the lot and launched a campaign to transform it into a green public area. The project was based on collective work and voluntary contributions, with participants setting the terms of the operation themselves. Gradually, through community awareness and public support, the former parking lot was finally turned into a park, responding to the urgent need for green spaces in the city. In 2018, a part of the park was converted into a playground, fulfilling a major local demand that the state had failed to meet.
One of the most popular open-air markets, located in the beautiful neighbourhood of Exarchia becomes a Saturday event not only for residents but also for people who come here from different corners of the city. This unique atmosphere is reflected in its vibrant local market, its constantly evolving culinary scene and its long-established traditional cafés, souvlaki eateries and coffee spots. At the heart of the neighbourhood lies its emblematic landmark, Gyzi Square, a lively green gathering place that serves daily as a meeting point and a space for relaxation for thousands of residents and visitors alike.

It's the only public transport line that reaches the hill, making it essential both for locals and visitors – especially in the summer due to the many steep uphill streets in the area. It can be described as Athens’ most “refined” bus, not because of its design but because of its route, as it passes through the most elegant part of the city centre and the upscale neighbourhoods of Kolonaki and Lycabettus, areas known for their urban charm and classy atmosphere.

Tucked away in Koukaki, this spot keeps things simple but tasty. Açaι΄ bowls remain at the core, made with fruit purée sourced directly from Brazil, without powders or additives. But now you’ve got even more options: pitaya (aka dragon fruit), mango, and cupuaçu – the Brazilian cousin of cacao with a creamy, tropical punch. Pick your base and pile on fruits and toppings - can be vegan or not, depending on your preference. The menu also includes a wide range of smoothies that you’ll love. If you add a proper specialty coffee on the side, you’ve got a combo boosting both energy and mood. Simple, fresh, and dangerously easy to crave again.

WHAT IS THE MEANING WE ASCRIBE TO THE UNCLOTHED BODY? HOW DID ANCIENT GREEKS VIEW SEXUALITY? WHICH WERE THE MOST POPULAR HEALING METHODS IN ANTIQUITY? HOW DID PEOPLE HONOR THE DIVINE?
My name is Despina Iosif (PhD in Ancient History at University College London) and I am a passionate professional tour guide who often takes my friends to unique spots, in Athens, in order to reflect upon these questions and connect with nature.
The Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Monastery of Kaisariani both offer an unparalleled spiritual journey combining ancient wisdom, nature, and healing energy.
The grand pagan Temple of Olympian Zeus was built in the 6th cent BC, it took almost 8 centuries to complete, and early Christians climbed on top of it in order to be closer to God and away from sin. Nearby, Moni Kaisarianis, a 11th cent CE, now abandoned, peaceful monastery nestled in the forest of Mount Hymettus, provides a calm atmosphere ideal for reflection. Visiting these places with friends creates an opportunity to slow down, reconnect with nature and history, and share meaningful moments focused on well-being, mindfulness, and spiritual exploration in one of Greece's most inspiring settings. If interested in bath houses, health, healing and spiritiality, in ancient Greece as well as today, then reach out to me!

The Zapion Megaron is one of the most important neoclassical buildings in Athens, located south of the National Garden. Designed by Theophil Hansen and funded by Evangelos Zappas, it was inaugurated in 1888. Intertwined with modern Greek history, it was built to serve the needs of the 1896 Olympic Games. Today, this iconic venue operates as a modern conference and exhibition centre, hosting prestigious events. ZAPIO OR ZAPION

These buildings are the most iconic architectural complex in the capital, located on Panepistimiou Street. It owes its name to the Danish architect Theophil Hansen, who coined the term in 1902.
Athens University (Central Building): Designed by Hans Christian Hansen and decorated by painter Karl Rahl. It originally opened in 1841 as the "Othoneon" (after King Otto). Following Otto's expulsion in 1862, it was renamed the "National University".
Academy of Athens (Right Building): Designed by Theophil Hansen and completed in
1885, it was officially handed over to the government in 1887. Curiously, the building sat "empty" of its intended purpose for nearly 40 years, as the actual Academy of Athens wasn't founded until 1926! In the meantime, the grand structure served as the Numismatic and Byzantine Museum.
National Library (Left Building - Vallianeio): Also designed by Theophil Hansen, though the construction was supervised by his famous student, Ernst Ziller. The National Library officially moved into this stunning building in 1903, relocating from its older quarters inside the neighboring University building.

Between Exarchia and Kolonaki, Ippopotamos is an iconic bar in a charming pedestrian street, reminiscent of those of the Greek islands. Its friendly atmosphere and authentic urban vibe make it a favorite summer hangout. The tables on Delphon pedestrian street are ideal for morning coffee and snacks to afternoon cocktails. In the evening, the rich bar and the sound of rock music (from the 50s to today) invite you to enjoy your drink until late at night. This classic yet modern spot has been keeping Athenians company more than four decades. Don’t miss it for the world!

IPPIOS KOLONOS HILL IS LOCATED IN THE HOMONYMOUS AREA OF ATHENS. IT HAS A SIGNIFICANT HISTORY DATING BACK TO THE TIME OF ANCIENT ATHENS AND EVEN TODAY IS AN IMPORTANT GATHERING POINT FOR THE LOCALS. WITHIN THE HILL ARE THE MONUMENTS OF THE PHILELLINS ARCHAELOGISTS MILLER AND LENORMAND AS WELL AS THE OPEN-AIR THEATRE OF COLONUS.
THE COLORFUL TOBACCO FACTORY
The Public Tobacco Factory (218 Lenorman St.) is a 1930 building that once housed tobacco businesses and was designated a protected historic monument in 1989. Today, belongs to the Hellenic Parliament, hosting its Library services. Heading towards Peristeri, you will easily spot it on your right hand, thanks to its characteristic yellow and red colors.

Over the years, uncontrolled urbanization and the gradual burying of the river Kifissos radically altered the natural landscape, transforming a green ecosystem into a densely populated urban fabric. This gives rise to a profound, almost melancholic question: If we hadn’t sacrificed the river on the altar of asphalt, could Athens have evolved into a Paris, with Kifissos flowing in place of the Seine?

Peristeri is the vibrant heart of Athens' western suburbs. In antiquity, it formed part of the Cholargos deme, a fertile land crossed by the Kifissos River, while its modern history truly began in 1922 with the arrival of Asia Minor refugees. Today, it stands as one of Attica's most densely populated municipalities. A hallmark of its recent development is its administrative stability; the mayor has been at the helm for 24 consecutive years, successfully transforming the area from a traditional working-class district into a modern city filled with parks. The name "Peristeri" translates directly to "pigeon" or "dove" in Greek. There are two main theories regarding its origin: it either refers to the vast flocks of pigeons that once thrived in the area's olive groves, or it derives from a prominent local landowner of the past who bore the surname Peristeris.

METRO LINE 1 from Thissio to Kifissia
18 stops 36 minutes every 6’-15’
Metro Line 1 is the only one that defies the darkness, as most of it runs above ground with the exception of the underground sections between Omonia-Victoria and Kato Patisia. As the city's first line, with a history dating back to 1869, it invites us on a cinematic journey from bohemian Thissio, under the shadow of the Acropolis, toward the northern suburbs. Passing through Nea Ionia with its refugee industrial heritage and modern Maroussi with its glass skyscrapers, we reach aristocratic Kifisia. The beauty of the "Ilektrikos" (as Athenians call this line) lies in its honesty: inside the carriage, you feel the pulse of the people, while outside, you see the city stripped bare. The scenery shifts constantly, revealing every facet of Athens, even its roughest side.

A neighbourhood with deep roots and a strong identity. Founded in 1923 by refugees from Asia Minor, its history remains visible today in the architecture of the old refugee houses and the names of the streets. Once the country's largest textile hub, its old factories now stand as monuments of industrial history. Today, the area is full of life, featuring one of Athens' most dynamic local markets.

Nestled between Acropolis and Filopappou Hill, is the heartbeat of central Athens. It takes its name from the Temple of Hephaestus, which was famously misidentified as the "Thission" because of the labors of Theseus depicted on its friezes. beyond the Ancient Agora, the neighbourhood enchants visitors with the Apostolou Pavlou pedestrian street and the National Observatory.

One of the oldest municipalities in the city that connects tradition to modernization. On one hand, picturesque alleys and its continuous promotion of ceramic art, preserve the character of the old Athenian neighbourhood. On the other, the surrounding avenues and bigger streets have transformed into the capital's modern business centre, featuring impressive glass towers and multinational corporations. This coexistence gives Maroussi a multifaceted energy.

The name of this historic tavern reveals its Greek identity. Klimataria is a grape vine on a hanging trellis, a plant fully routed in Greek history through the centuries. Klimataria is an authentic Greek tavern where you can enjoy the vibe along with the delicious Greek traditional cuisine (try the slow-cooked lamb in a wood oven). Here you can have the chance to taste homemade bread and recipes made with extra virgin olive oil. After 9 p.m., in the beautiful backyard, the rebetiko live (Greek urban folk music) will complete the experience of old Athens.

You show up early (non-negotiable), get the quick lowdown, hop on, and suddenly you’re pedaling on railway tracks like it’s

11 TROLLEY from Omonia to Ano Patisia 13 stops 18 minutes every 15’-30’
The night route of trolley 11, one of the busiest lines in Athens, is not for the fainthearted. Be prepared for a crowded ride, especially on weekends. If you happen to catch it at a quieter moment, don’t hesitate to hop on and enjoy an atmospheric ride along the historic Patision Avenue. Along the way, the route passes important landmarks such as the National Technical University of Athens and the National Archaeological Museum. Grand mansions such as Maria Callas’ house and the first “polykatikia" (apartment building) of Athens on the corner with Laskaratou Street, weave a landscape of urban architectural transformation.

The glowing “1982” sign in the heart of Exarchia leads to a Berlin-style underground bar and art space, constantly shifting between nightclub energy and creative experimentation. Upstairs, the DJ booth keeps the electronic music flowing late into the night. Downstairs, the basement becomes a raw gallery for exhibitions, live performances, screenings, installations, and independent events, attracting artists, dancers, DJs, and Athens’ night creatures alike.

OMONIA SQUARE: THE EVER-CHANGING HEART OF ATHENS
THIS SQUARE IS THE ULTIMATE LANDMARK OF ATHENS, HAVING UNDERGONE MORE ARCHITECTURAL TRANSFORMATIONS THAN ANY OTHER URBAN SPACE. ORIGINALLY DESIGNED IN 1834 AS “PALACE SQUARE”, IT WAS RENAMED “OMONIA” (CONCORD) IN 1862 TO SYMBOLISE NATIONAL RECONCILIATION. ONCE THE SOCIAL CENTRE OF THE CITY, ADORNED WITH PALM TREES AND LUXURIOUS CAFES, IT GRADUALLY EVOLVED INTO A BUSY TRANSPORTATION HUB. OMONIA REMAINS A HARSH BUT LIVING MIRROR OF GREECE’S POLITICAL AND SOCIAL EVOLUTION.
ITS ICONIC BUILDING ON PATISION AVENUE, DESIGNED BY L. LANGE AND E. ZILLER, OPENED IN 1881. DURING WORLD WAR II, THE ANTIQUITIES WERE BURIED IN UNDERGROUND PITS TO BE PROTECTED FROM LOOTING AND DAMAGE. TODAY, FOLLOWING EXTENSIVE RENOVATIONS, THE MUSEUM HOSTS A PANORAMA OF THE GREEK ANCIENT CIVILIZATION, SPANNING FROM PREHISTORY TO LATE ANTIQUITY THROUGH ITS WORLD-CLASS PERMANENT COLLECTIONS.

As darkness falls, Kypseli reveals its magnetic charm. This neighbourhood is a timeless cultural sanctuary, where the sign lights of historic theatres and cinemas cast a nostalgic glow over the bustling sidewalks. Its nightlife offers a rich mosaic of experiences, from the authentic warmth of traditional tavernas to contemporary bars that satisfy every style. The crown jewel of this nocturnal landscape is Au Revoir, the oldest bar in Athens (on Patision Avenue), where decades of history blend with the vibrant spirit of the streets to create an irresistible, cinematic atmosphere.

Open since October 2024, Filtro has already become part of the daily rhythm of Ano Kypseli. Created by two friends, Vasilis and Kostis, the café combines soft Nordic calm, large sunlit windows, and serious coffee craftsmanship. The protagonists here are the carefully selected single origin coffee, the award-winning Cup of Excellence beans, the tasty handmade sweets, and savory snacks prepared with ingredients from small Greek producers. The pastrami focaccia is already a favorite. Vinyl records and CDs shape the soundtrack here, while regulars return not only for coffee, but for conversation, familiarity, and genuine warmth.

ARCHAEOLOGIST & TOUR GUIDE
HEY EVERYONE! I AM ARIADNE, ARCHAEOLOGIST AND TOUR GUIDE, AND TODAY I WILL TELL YOU A DIFFERENT STORY OF ATHENS. OUR TOUR BEGINS IN THE AREA OF METAXOURGHIO AND ITS OLD INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS. THERE, IT IS ALSO WORTH PAUSING TO EXPLORE THE WORKS OF CONTEMPORARY STREET ARTISTS.
What, one might wonder, was Solon doing in Athens during modern times of austerity? How does an owl go viral thousands of years after Athena did, and what does this art have to reveal about our perception of public space? These questions will guide us all the way to modern Kerameikos and Technopolis, a museum and cultural venue that once served as a gassworks factory and today hosts festivals and artistic events. In present-day Gazi (literally
gas in translation), many theatre stages and music venues, as well as its clubs, bars, and restaurants, make up a diverse and creative space where one can enjoy the Athenian nightlife. Our tour ends right there, where we'll join in the entertainment of the area, while keeping in mind the unknown everyday people, whose labour created and continues to sustain the historical city that welcomes us today.

Fokionos Negri is one of Athens’ most charming and vibrant pedestrian streets, built over the old Levidis River. Although the river is now completely covered, its memory lives on through the three fountains that still decorate the street.
One of the most recognizable landmarks here, is the statue of The Hound Dog, a marble sculpture created in 1940 that has long served as a meeting point for locals. Another important site is the Kypseli Municipal Market, which opened in 1937 to serve the daily needs of residents. After ceasing operations in 2003, the building was preserved as a historic landmark because of its architectural and cultural importance. Since reopening in 2013, it has been transformed into a lively cultural space hosting exhibitions and events.

On the western side of the Acropolis, three neighboring hills form one of the most important cultural and historical landmarks of Athens: The hill of the Nymphs, Pnyx and Philopappou hill. All loved by both visitors and locals for their beauty, historical importance and the most impressive views of the Parthenon.
The Hill of the Nymphs takes its name from the Temple built there in honor of the Nymphs, the protectors of vegetation and fertility. The National Observatory of Athens, founded in 1842, is also located on the top of the hill. Next is the Pnyx hill, where the Athenian democratic assembly (Ekklesia) was taking place in the ancient times. Finally, Philopappou hill with the Philopappos monument on its top and on its foot the Church of Agios Dimitrios Loumbardiaris, a small church constructed during the Ottoman period and restored by the iconic greek architect Dimitrios Pikionis. According to the story the church took its name when in 1658, on the eve of the feast of Saint Demetrius, Yusuf Pasha intended to bombard the church with cannon (loumbard). However, the storm that night ruined his plan and he was killed when a thunder fell upon the ammunition depot and blew it up.

THE PLACE WHERE DEMOCRACY AND REVOLUTION MEET
GOING UP THE STAIRS AT SYNTAGMA METRO STATION, YOU COME ACROSS THE HELLENIC PARLIAMENT, A HISTORICAL AND INSTITUTIONAL SYMBOL. IT WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT AS THE PALACE OF THE MONARCHS AND WAS CONVERTED INTO THE CHAMBER OF PARLIAMENT AND THE SENATE IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY. THE HELLENIC PARLIAMENT IS THE LEGISLATIVE BODY OF THE HELLENIC REPUBLIC, RESPONSIBLE FOR ENACTING LAWS AND REPRESENTING THE PEOPLE, WHILE EXERCISING LEGISLATIVE POWER IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE GREEK CONSTITUTION. IT IS ALSO TRADITIONALLY THE PLACE WHERE ATHENIANS PROTEST AND EXPRESS THEIR DEMANDS.
IN FRONT OF PARLIAMENT STANDS THE MONUMENT OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER, ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S MOST NOTEWORTHY MONUMENTS, PAYING TRIBUTE TO THE ANONYMOUS HEROES WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY. NEARBY, ON STADIOU STREET, IS THE MUSEUM OF THE OLD PARLIAMENT, A NEOCLASSICAL BUILDING THAT HOUSES THE NATIONAL HISTORICAL MUSEUM. FOUNDED IN 1882, THE MUSEUM FOCUSES ON THE HISTORY OF MODERN HELLENISM, FROM THE FALL OF CONSTANTINOPLE TO WORLD WAR II. IT PRESENTS THE POLITICAL, SOCIAL, AND INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE GREEK NATION AND ALSO SERVES AS A RESEARCH CENTRE FOR MODERN GREEK HISTORY. IN THE SQUARE IN FRONT OF THE BUILDING STANDS THE STATUE OF THEODOROS KOLOKOTRONIS, A LEADING FIGURE OF THE GREEK REVOLUTION OF 1821 AND A GREAT GENERAL OF THE PELOPONNESE.

Founded and built in 1901 as the “Royal Theatre” on Agios Konstantinos Street, based on designs by Ziller, it reopened in 1930 as the National Theatre by decision of the Minister of Education. It is considered an iconic cultural institution in Greece, playing a significant role in showcasing theatrical talent and promoting the Greek theatrical tradition through its permanent troupe and Drama School, which remains in operation to this day. Today, the Main Stage is built on the site of the old facility and meets the latest standards, including accessibility provisions for people with hearing impairments, while being able to host a wide range of performances.

Founded in 1997 as a private, non-profit legal entity supervised and subsidised by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the museum held its first temporary exhibition in 2000. Today, it collects, preserves, researches, and exhibits works of modern Greek and international artistic production that address both contemporary and timeless issues. Its aim is to highlight innovative and experimental artistic trends through new media, while offering the public opportunities for interaction.

Dedicated to one of the greatest opera singers of all time, whose performances changed the history of opera forever, the first Maria Callas Museum in Athens invites visitors to immerse themselves in her world, her life, her unique interpretations of iconic roles, and the great legacy she left behind through texts, artifacts, videos, and audio clips. The museum offers interactive and experiential guided tours, while also hosting cultural events, masterclasses, and educational activities for the whole family.

Just steps from the Acropolis Museum, the beloved family-run Gods' Restaurant, has been sharing the flavours of Greece for more than two decades, remaining in the same location for 25 years. Built on the culinary legacy of acclaimed chef Georgios Falias, it brings together recipes, ingredients, and traditions from every corner of the country. Expect comforting classics such as moussaka and handmade pies, alongside fresh salads and slow-cooked specialties inspired by the islands and mainland alike. Its warm hospitality, prime location and a menu rooted in authentic Greek cooking, have made it a favorite with both locals and international visitors looking for a genuine taste of Greece.

A2 remains the ultimate gateway for anyone looking to exchange the bustling city centre for the breeze of the sea.

The coastline plays host to three major nautical hubs. Alimos Marina, one of the largest in Europe, serves as the primary base for yachts and charter boats. Agios Kosmas Marina, deeply tied to the Olympic Games of 2004 as a space specifically created and utilised for this cause, is continuously being upgraded. Finally, the 2nd Glyfada Marina offers a more intimate, cosmopolitan atmosphere right next to the commercial heart of the southern suburbs.

Andrea Syggrou Avenue is the most iconic roadway connecting the historic centre of Athens to the coastal front. Designed in the late 19th century, it evolved into an ultra-modern business and cultural axis. Traveling down Syggrou, the urban landscape shifts rapidly as imposing office buildings, five-star hotels, and cultural landmarks -such as the Onassis Stegi and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre at its end- herald the arrival at the Athenian Riviera, serving as the city’s natural “bridge” to the sea.

Voula marks the perfect finale to the urban coastline, where the fast pace of the city gives way to the serenity of the Saronic Gulf. Renowned for both its organised and free beaches, such as the cosmopolitan 2nd Plage, the area seamlessly blends luxury living with seaside relaxation. Its lush, tree-lined streets, manicured squares filled with premium cafes, and laid-back aura make it one of the most expensive and highly sought-after hubs in the southern suburbs. Here, the Athenian Riviera takes on a more family-oriented and sophisticated character.

Aerostato Café (means “hot air balloon”) sits in leafy Proskopon Square in Pagrati, blending the charm of a retro French bistro with a relaxed jazz cafébar atmosphere. Guests enjoy coffee or drinks surrounded by jazz, swing, and blues melodies. Although it is just steps away from bustling Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue, it retains a peaceful atmosphere and authentic neighbourhood charm.

Hidden behind the Numismatic Garden, Volver a la Sombra has been a beloved secret among Athenians since 2013. It’s the kind of spot you discover through friends, chance, or afternoon wandering, then keep returning to. Flavourful teas, smoothies, refreshing spritzes, and the famous Zombie cocktail that regulars swear by – their sandwiches are also well worth trying! Together with Hausbrandt, they also serve the Antica Tostatura Triestina espresso blend, slowly wood-roasted over beechwood fires, giving it a rich and balanced character. Set beneath one of the city’s oldest fig trees, the leafy courtyard feels peaceful and completely removed from downtown noise.

Koukaki remains one of the few central Athenian neighbourhoods that still feels personal despite tourism and rapid change. Students, artists, workers, visitors, and older residents continue to share the same streets, giving the area a rare balance between familiarity and movement.
Beneath the Acropolis, old taverns stand beside modern cafés, while traces of older Athens survive in quiet corners. The neighbourhood was once known as Gargaretta before later taking its identity from Georgios Koukakis, a mattress factory owner who lived there.

Kallithea is a neighbourhood shaped by contrasts, where working-class history, migration, nightlife, and everyday city life all come together at once. Its name means “beautiful view”, a reminder of the time when the area overlooked both the Acropolis and Lycabettus Hill before dense apartment buildings transformed the landscape. Around Davaki Square, the Pontian Market still preserves refugee traditions through family-run shops selling regional products, spices, fish, and handmade pasta. At the same time, Syggrou Avenue serves as a reminder of Athens’ nightlife culture, with its cabarets, late-night venues, and sleepless character.
STAVROS NIARCHOS FOUNDATION CULTURAL CENTRE: TIME TO TAKE A DEEP BREATH
AT THE SOUTHERN EDGE OF KALLITHEA, THE STAVROS NIARCHOS FOUNDATION CULTURAL CENTRE OFFERS A PEACEFUL ESCAPE BY THE SEA. DESIGNED BY RENZO PIANO, IT FEATURES BEAUTIFUL GARDENS, WALKING AND CYCLING PATHS, AND HOSTS CONCERTS AND OPEN-AIR EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. HOME TO THE GREEK NATIONAL OPERA AND THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF GREECE, IT IS ONE OF ATHENS’ MOST VIBRANT CULTURAL SPACES.

Some restaurants simply serve food. Others create experiences. Kuzina unmistakably belongs to the latter.
At Kuzina, dinner becomes a complete sensory experience. Overlooking the Acropolis and the Temple of Hephaestus, the rooftop pairs spectacular views with the inventive cuisine of chef Aris Tsanaklidis, who masterfully combines Greek ingredients with Asian and Mediterranean influences, achieving a creative fusion that is both innovative and comforting. Signature dishes such as the pumpkin risotto with saffron and goat cheese, the miso-marinated cod, the tuna with ginger-wasabi sauce, the rack of lamb with Mavrodaphne sauce and even the memorable spinach and valerian salad with grilled nectarines capture the restaurant’s bold yet refined character. A Michelin-recognised restaurant – stylish, relaxed, and unmistakably Athenian!

The historical National Garden in the city centre lies between Kolonaki and Pagrati. It was Queen Amalia’s garden at first, named after her, who dreamt of its creation and took great care of it, until 1927 when it was renamed the National Garden due to changes in the country’s political system, from monarchy to democracy. The garden covers an area of 285.000 square

journey through time and contrast
The route from Monastiraki to Elaionas via Metro Line 3 (the city’s most modern line, by the way) is a unique transition from the historic centre of Athens to the heart of the city’s industrial and folk history. Starting from the vibrancy of Monastiraki, the train swiftly transports you to Kerameikos, where the glorious past meets modern urban culture. The area around Gazi has been transformed into an ultimate entertainment destination, while still maintaining the aura of an old neighbourhood. As we move toward Elaionas, the scenery changes, revealing the rawest side of the capital, where Iera Odos (Sacred Way) continues to be the central axis connecting yesterday with today.
METRO LINE 3

Monastiraki stands as Athens' most vibrant crossroads, where its central square and the Kapnikarea church serve as timeless meeting points for locals and visitors alike. Within the district's scenic alleys, the famous Yusurum (the open-air bazaar of antiques and second-hand treasures) offers a one-of-a-kind shopping experience, with the antique shops of Abyssinia Square overflowing with rare finds from a bygone era. The view of the Acropolis is breathtaking, while the aromas of traditional souvlaki mingle with the spirited calls of street vendors. It is a neighbourhood that never sleeps, a place bursting with color and energy, where the essence of old Athens remains timeless and captivating.
Gazi is a neighbourhood that was originally developed around the city's gasworks factory. Once a traditional working-class district, it is now one of the most popular areas in Athens. The factory complex has been renamed "Technopolis" and houses the Industrial Gas Museum –definitely worth a visit for its fascinating stories. Today, Gazi is defined by its modern bars and clubs, while the famous "bouzoukia" serve as the ultimate reference point for mainstream Athenian nightlife.

LICENCED TOUR GUIDE-HISTORIAN
BORN AND RAISED IN A SMALL VILLAGE IN GREECE, MONASTIRAKI WAS ONE OF THE FIRST PLACES I EXPLORED COMING TO THE CAPITAL OF GREECE, ATHENS. I STARTED TAKING LONG WALKS ALONE TO EXPLORE THIS CITY, OBSERVE THE PEOPLE AND STREETS, AND FEEL MORE CONNECTED TO IT.
One of my favourite routes is from Monastiraki to the historic neighbourhood of Psyrri, once the birthplace of "rebetiko" (greek urban folk music) and the "mangas" (thug men) culture, is now transformed into one of the most vibrant and bohemian parts of Athens, full of workshops, small cafes and bars. In the mornings, I always love to make a small stop at the old Yousouroum
flea market, where I love exploring vintage objects and hidden treasures of material culture. Continuing my walk, I enjoy getting lost in picturesque Plaka, with its neoclassical houses, hidden corners and cozy atmosphere. One of my favourite moments is meze time in the small local taverns around its little squares.
