ANCH or A g E P ol ICE DEP t (APD)

Generally, when people think of a police department, they think of patrol officers on the street. The Anchorage Police Department (APD) does have three patrol shifts offering our community 24hour coverage. However, APD is comprised of many public-serving components of sworn and non-sworn employees. Our sworn employees cover patrol, detectives, SWAT, K9, task force assignments, school resource officers, traffic and more. We also have a large non-sworn employee component who works diligently in multiple units, including dispatch, impounds, evidence, crime lab, community relations and records. Together, these hard-working employees make this great city we call home a safer place to live and work. We are honored to serve the citizens of Anchorage and to be ranked among Alaska’s best workplaces.

Over 40 years ago, Willy Van Hemert, PE, had an unorthodox idea. He believed he could create a firm that would become a leader in Alaska civil engineering. A lot of people think that. “Willy’s idea was different. He knew success starts with happy employees: Happy Employees = Better Work Products = Happy Clients = Repeat Clients Our goal is for all of our clients to be repeat clients.”

At Northrim Bank, we’re prepared to help our communities achieve more. We understand the unique opportunities and challenges of living and working in Alaska. Superior customer-first service – it’s why we started and how we’ve grown. Every employee at Northrim is dedicated to giving caring, personal attention each time a customer calls or visits us. Today, we have an organization full of people who truly care about our customers, and who provide friendly, creative, flexible service.

Northrim has matured from a small community bank that started in a trailer with 21 employees and $8 million in assets to an active, engaged community leader with well over 400 employees, branches from Fairbanks to Southeast Alaska, residential mortgage origination offices across the state, and more than $2 billion in assets.

As a community bank, Northrim is also a reflection of Alaska’s economy. The resources we dedicate to understanding the economy, and the commitment we have to sharing that knowledge, is core to our organization. You’ll find us speaking regularly at events and supporting community involvement opportunities. As leaders and advocates, we are always looking for new ways to engage and educate.

One thing we never lose focus on is serving the needs of Alaska and the people who live and work here.

WORkPLACE AWARDS PROGRAM: METhODOLOGY & DISCLAIMERS

OVERALL DESCRIPTION

We believe that providing a program to help businesses better serve customers and employees — and recognize excellence — is a logical step for the local business community. To create the list, the publisher partnered with DataJoe Research, a Coloradobased data collection and analysis firm, to determine the top workplaces in the region. DataJoe and the publication facilitated a multifaceted campaign. including a.) Community Nomination, b.) Employee Surveys, and c.) Results Analysis.

COMMUNITY NOMINATION

DataJoe and the publication sought nominees in the first phase of the program, and received nominations from many private, public, nonprofit and government organizations from across the region. Those organizations rolled out online surveys to employees and had to be completed by the deadline.

EMPLOYEE SURVEYS

Employees were asked to answer 25+ questions about organizational health, engagement, and leader- ship plus other areas like work-life balance, training, pay, benefits, corporate social responsibility and other specialty question categories. Employees rated their employers with scores ranging from 1-7: a score of 1 represented “strongly disagree,” 4 was neutral and 7 was “strongly agree.” Employees could also write comments on topics such as motivation, referrals of potential employees, retention, leadership, values and ethics, direction and cooperation.

RESULTS ANALYSIS

Employers were required to meet our minimum response rate in order to be honored as a best workplace. Any employer with mostly negative responses was excluded. DataJoe also reviewed responses, both manually and algorithmically, to isolate and mitigate cheating rings and dishonest practices. Finally, DataJoe tallied up responses and identified the companies with the highest average scoring.

EMPLOYER TIERS

Employers were grouped into four categories by size, based on the number of employees:

Large: over 76 Midsize: 26-75 Small: less than 25

Smaller employers tend to score higher than larger employers, and this was factored into the methodology.

FINAL NOTES

Summary. The Best Workplaces program is designed to be an annual free survey and workplace health analysis to identify companies that are creating strong, healthy workplace cultures. We recognize that there are many excellent workplaces that are not shown in this representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of vibrant, healthy workplaces within the region. Inclusion in the list is based on our research campaign and the opinions of responding employees in the area.
