Announcing Bear Paw Festival 2022 “It Takes Two to Tango”!

Did you know that the Bear Paw Festival is one of the largest volunteer-run events in the country? The Chugiak Eagle River Chamber of Commerce sponsors and coordinates the Festival, but it is our volunteers who are the heart and soul of Bear Paw Festival! I want to take this opportunity to give a great big shout-out to our committed volunteers and staff, plus our sponsors and businesses who provide financial support. We couldn’t put on this fabulous event without you!!!

After our record year in 2021, we are more than excited for our 37th Annual Bear Paw Festival! The Festival will be bigger and better this year! We’ve brought back our well-loved Teddy Bear Picnic. Our Grand Parade will be every bit as grand as you have come to expect. We’ve expanded our Bear Paw Live Music Festival to three days of live music, food trucks and beer at Matanuska Brewing Company in their fabulous upgraded and expanded outdoor venue. Admission to Bear Paw Live is FREE!!! We’ve also expanded our shuttle service with more regular and reliable pick-ups to help you get around and alleviate parking challenges as the Festival expands through-out Eagle River.

Look for the Classic Car Show on Friday night to move back to Business Boulevard. The Motorcycle Show moves to Thursday at Chepos. And, don’t forget our mid-week events—Bear Paw Paints and Trivia Night! Saturday starts off with a bang with our Grand Parade, Bear Paw 5K, Slippery Salmon Olympics and Human Foosball!

Come out on Sunday and give Goat Yoga a try, then head on over to our popular “Chopped” event. Events will be ongoing all week and weekend in the downtown area, on Business Boulevard and Eagle River Commons Park.

Treat yourself to a ride on the ferris wheel at the Grand Carnival, some scrumptious fair food, a trinket from our vendors and enjoy all the sights and sounds that Chugiak-Eagle River has to offer. 2022 Bear Paw Festival July 14, 15, 16 & 17 Road Closures & Restricted Access Don’t be surprised!!!! Take note of the following road closures & restricted access points for this year’s festival in the Eagle River Business District. Special note for businesses, don’t forget that the temporary closures and restricted access can impact your shift schedules! Don’t get stuck—Plan ahead. The Chamber recommends staying of the Old Glenn by 10:00am on Saturday.

July 14, 15, 16 & 17 for Pedestrian Safety: Business Blvd will close between Mat-Valley Credit Union and Regency Drive on Thursday, July 14th at 10am until Sunday, July 17th at 6pm. Local access only to Timber Ridge & VCA Vet Clinic and the Storage Units will be maintained. Vetted access for members of Mat-Valley Credit Union will be available for Thursday & Friday only. Traffic will be rerouted onto Regency Drive. Note: People Mover will have a temporary stop on Friday evening. NEW THIS YEAR—THERE WILL BE NO PARKING ON REGENCY DRIVE OR BEHIND CARR’S SAFEWAY—YOU WILL BE TICKETED IF YOU PARK IN THESE AREAS. There will be a FREE shuttle at the following areas for accessing the festival—Fred Meyers, Matanuska Brewing Co., VFW, Festival grounds—The times are Friday—7-15/6pm-10pm / Saturday—7-16/9am-10pm / Sunday—7-17/10am-6pm July 16 for 5K Race & Grand Parade: Old Glenn Hwy between Eagle River Loop & Eagle River Rd will close entirely from 10:45am–12:15pm.

Centerfield Drive will close in its entirety from 8:00am – 12:15pm.

Business Blvd will close in its entirety 10:15 am – 12:15pm.

Monte Road and Old Eagle River Road – will have restricted access between 8am – 12:15pm.

Traffic will be rerouted up Eagle River Loop Road or Eagle River Road.

Farm Avenue closes temporarily in order to start the 5K between 9:30am and 10:40am

Eaglexit is about to begin the regulatory and statutory review of its detachment and incorporation petition and charter review with our community, our municipal neighbors, and State of Alaska.

To get to this done, we will need volunteers to help us gather petition signatures.

The State of Alaska requires 25% of the voters in the area to be detached. We are estimating based on the last municipal general election that there are almost 42,000 registered voters in Assembly District 2 (from Tikahtnu Commons to the New Knik Bridge).

This means we will need to gather over 12,500 signatures. We think there will be signatures which are disallowed and therefore want to cover any signature disqualifications.

The Chugiak-Eagle River Bear Paw Festival will be an ideal time to gather signatures.

We are told there were between 30,000 and 40,000 attendees last year and if the weather holds, we will probably see the same numbers or more.

We have worked diligently to get to this point and need to hear from you.

Please volunteer to help us collect signatures during July 13th through July 17th at the Chugiak-Eagle River Bear Paw Festival.

Can I bring my dog/pet to the Bear Paw Festival?

Service Animals are allowed. All others are highly discouraged. The Festival is familyfriendly, but pets do best if left at home. If you do bring your dog, it must be on a leash. If the animal appears to be dangerous or disruptive, Festival Staff will ask you to leave.

New to 2022 - The Bear Paw Shuttle! Look for the Shuttle Schedule in the Guide!

Unlike the Alaska Fair which has a dedicated location, the Bear Paw Festival is held in the middle of the Eagle River Business District. Unfortunately, Eagle River has limited parking for the Festival. Regular business members in the area still conduct business with their customers and clients during the five-day festival.

The Festival Organizers are no longer requiring individuals to wear masks. You will notice some events and activities are spread out to encourage better social distancing and additional handwashing and hand-sanitizing stations are available. If you are sick, not feeling well, have COVID-19 or another infectious disease, or have been exposed to someone who is, please do not come to the Festival.
