UNTAPPED POTENTIAL
Now a cornerstone festival for the city of Westerville, Uptown Untapped celebrates craft beer in the former headquarters of the Prohibition movement
Would you believe us if we told you every summer a booming craft beer festival is held in the same city that was once home to the AntiSaloon League headquarters, and was nicknamed the Dry Capital of the World?
Believe it or not, that’s the truth, and the festival, Uptown Untapped, has its largest event yet in store for 2025. It will be held along East Main Street on Aug. 9, from 6-10 p.m.
This year, according to Lynn Aventino, director of Uptown Westerville, Inc., more than 2,500 people are expected to fill the streets of Uptown for the event, which will offer tastings from over a dozen local breweries, live music, and a whole lot of fun.
The event began in 2017, Aventino said, when Uptown Westerville approached the city about creating a signature summer event. And Uptown Untapped was officially created.
“Never before had Westerville had an event that allowed drinking outside on the street,” Aventino said. “But I think the city is very in tune to what works, and what will help growth, and at that time craft beer was really hitting its stride.”
While the event does offer plenty to eat for hungry festival-goers, you’re not likely to see food trucks lining Uptown Westerville on Aug. 9. Instead, Uptown Untapped places an emphasis on highlighting local brick and mortar eateries, such as Asterisk Supper Club, Cardinal Pizza, Old Bag of Nails and more. With the closure of the street and the focus on Westerville-specific restaurants, Aventino said the event feels “just like a backyard party.”
This year’s Uptown Untapped will kick off with beer tastings for the first hour (which require an Early Admission ticket), with 12-ounce pours being offered for the rest of
the event. The 2025 beer menu and live music schedule will be released at a later date, but the festival also plans to offer plenty of free on-site games, including ping pong, foosball, electronic double basketball, puttputt golf, and cornhole.
And while it may seem a little unusual that the city once considered the Dry Capital of the World now hosts a thriving craft beer festival, that just adds to its appeal, as Aventino noted the event aims to walk the line between entertaining irony and paying homage to an important piece of Westerville's history.
“The first year we had teetotalers show up. We still have people who will let us know the prohibitionists would be rolling in their grave,” she said with a laugh. “But it’s all in good fun. The history is part of it, and everyone has a great time.”

HIGHBANK HISTORY
Keep up with all High Bank Distillery Co. locations by following @highbankco_ & @poboxtwentyone on Instagram.
Highbank Distillery Co.’s new Westerville location offers whiskey, history, and a secret speakeasy
In 1875, a man emerged from a saloon with two pistols drawn. Henry Corbin of Westerville had taken a chance on opening his drinking hole in Westerville, Ohio where consuming distilled spirits was strongly opposed. Corbin’s saloon was attacked twice–with sticks of dynamite–and often met with protestors. When Corbin addressed protestors with his pistols that fateful day, the Whiskey War on Prohibition was born, officially launching the Anti-Saloon League.
The story of Henry Corbin isn’t just an amusing tale, but a piece of history that modern day Westerville is built upon. Adam Hines, one of the co-founders of High Bank Distillery Co along with Jeff Ireland, knows and honors this.
“I am from Westerville, and being a brand person, I like a story,” said Hines.
The High Bank Distillery Co. of Westerville is an homage to this historic era, residing in a former post office building where Prohibition propaganda once flowed. This third, unique location of the High Bank Distillery was opened in 2024, creating an exclusive atmosphere for guests to travel back in time.
Descending the stairs of High Bank on the main floor brings guests to PO Box 21 in the old post office basement, a speakeasy that boasts 21 different cocktails inspired by the Prohibition Era in Westerville. Known for their Whiskey War product–which can be purchased on-site at the distillery shop–creative bartenders have free rein to experiment with new drinks, all influenced by major Prohibition players. For example, there is a cocktail named for Mary E. Lee, a 1920’s activist who became the
Westerville postmistress and once hosted parties for both Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge.
Beyond the craft cocktails and upscale bites offered from the High Bank kitchen, Hines is looking forward to further fostering the community in Westerville, which he is proud to call home.
“I am proud of having part of my business in the town where I am raising my family,” said Hines. “I have always wanted something like that, where I know the patrons going there and can build a relationship directly with them.”
High Bank Distillery Co Westerville not only offers an exclusive speakeasy experience and a delicious menu, but continues to elevate Uptown as a destination for out-of-town visitors and the larger Columbus area.

THE GIVING ROOM
Where Creativity Blooms
Rooted in tradition and blooming with new ideas, Westerville Florist continues to grow with the community.
For more than 65 years, Westerville Florist has been a cherished fixture in the community, bringing beauty and creativity to life through flowers. When Candice Martini took over the business in 2020, she imagined something more: a welcoming space where people could gather, create,
and celebrate meaningful moments. With the opening of The Giving Room, that vision has become a reality.
“Westerville has been incredibly supportive,” Martini says. “Expanding into this space was a natural next step–not just for our business but for the community. The Giving Room is

a place where people can connect, explore their creativity, and make lasting memories.”
More than just an expansion, The Giving Room is a tribute to Martini’s late father, Gerry DeLuca, whose entrepreneurial spirit and passion for philanthropy shaped her values.
A SPACE FOR EVERY OCCASION
Located in a historic Uptown Westerville building, the 1,500-square-foot Giving Room seamlessly blends modern charm with timeless character. With three flexible areas that can be used individually or combined, The Giving Room is a versatile space designed to accommodate a variety of gatherings, from floral workshops and corporate events to intimate celebrations and creative experiences
The front space features Think BigGER Gift Crates, customizable gift boxes featuring floral elements and locally curated items, including wine, thanks to a partnership with neighboring Meza Wine Shop. Aptly named in honor of DeLuca, a portion of proceeds from each crate supports a local charity.
The middle section offers a cozy gathering space highlighted by the original exposed brick from the building’s exterior and a floral mural. A kitchenette is also available for event use, making it easy to accommodate small gatherings and meetings of up to 20 guests.
The larger back area serves as the main event space, designed for hands-on workshops, private rentals, and community-focused experiences.
The décor is airy and inviting, with natural light, lush greenery, and a striking flower chandelier.
EXPERIENCES & EVENTS
Westerville Florist’s signature build-your-own-bouquet workshops can still travel offsite, but they now have a home in The Giving Room, alongside an expanded lineup of creative events, including macramé, botanical crafts, and artisan-led workshops.
Available for private rentals, the space is ideal for bridal showers, birthday celebrations, corporate team-building, and more.

Her dream came to fruition in 2012, as she was walking through Uptown with her family and saw a space for lease on College Ave.
Edwin Loy Home was established, although it looked a little different than it does now. Back then, Edwin Loy specialized in vintage wares and antiques, with room to evolve. But after discovering Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan that could be used for furniture, cabinetry, and floors, Amy quickly knew which direction she wanted to go in.
“I knew I wanted to teach classes and sell the Chalk Paint®,” Amy said. “The current shop was tiny, so within a year of opening, I was making a massive decision to move my store to N. State Street.”
Today, Edwin Loy Home is a lifestyle and decor shop that offers gifts, home decor, candles, unique vintage finds, and hand-painted home furniture. Wandering through the store, shoppers may browse brightly painted ceramic and pottery pieces, charming home accessories, and a variety of paper and stationery goods. Amy still sells Chalk Paint® and plans to bring back monthly workshops at the Edwin Loy Home location.
Also on N. State St. stands Edwin Loy Home’s sister store, Stone & Sparrow Apparel, created with the same atmosphere as Amy’s original store.
“Stone & Sparrow is a lifestyle boutique for both women and men offering clothing, jewelry, leather goods, and bath and body products,” Amy explained. “The stores complement each other, but are unique in their own right.”
Soon, a third store will join the line-up, as Amy and her team prepare to launch a new concept in summer 2025.
“We love Uptown Westerville,” Amy said. “We are fortunate that we get to grow as Uptown gets to grow. This new store is something we haven’t done before. It will be a retail-based gift shop, but we are keeping details kind of quiet. It will bring a missing link to the vibrancy of Uptown.”
