A

s we enter the last quarter of 2021, it is an appropriate time to take stock of the road we have traveled together as a community over the past year. There is a wonderful quote by Henry Ford that aptly reflects where we are as a city “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.”

Throughout the resident and business stories that have been highlighted in this first year of Uniquely Gahanna, a common theme has emerged: collaborative partnerships. Whether it is businesses working together to expand opportunities, neighbors helping neighbors to fill needs within the community, or organizations teaming up to provide programs and services

for our residents, these are the stories that make Gahanna successful.

In this last issue of 2021, we again focus on collaborations within our city that are moving Gahanna forward. Learn how our storytelling community of videographers is working together to build upon each other’s talents and skills to grow business opportunities and support one another. Read about how the City’s Parks & Recreation team is partnering with GahannaJefferson schools to create unique outdoor learning classes that both educate and entertain some of our youngest students. Discover how the Gahanna Division of Police has joined with retired officers to apply their wise experience in fulfilling

their mission to protect and serve our community.

And, as we approach a season of giving, find out how Gahanna’s non-profit community has come together to bolster fundraising efforts that support and benefit both our residents and our city.

Working together, our community is building upon existing partnerships that will benefit our city both now and in decades to come. We have a community that we can be proud of because of the work that is being done by our most important asset: our residents. As we continue to move Gahanna forward, these stories – our collective story – will always remain the heart of our city.

The Gahanna Storybook Trail is the perfect yearround adventure! Located at Friendship Park, this trail guides visitors through a story written by student authors at GLHS. This year’s tale celebrates the Earth’s four seasons, and encourages readers to appreciate the gifts each one has to offer. The Storybook Trail began in 2012 as a collaboration between Gahanna Parks & Recreation and the Gahanna Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. It has since become a tradition enjoyed by many.

Gahanna Division of Police Reserve Program Contributions made from the Reserve Officer Program are significant for the Gahanna Division of Police. Six Reserve Officers, who work on a volunteer basis, serve in a number of ways, but most typically by riding along to assist full-time officers during their shift.

These officers offer their unique skill sets to assist the Division with ongoing investigations, such as electronic forensic recovery of cell phones. This group of volunteers is always on deck and available when needed to work for our residents at events like the community fireworks, parade and the Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival.

Many of our reserves have served in other agencies or professions, and, have years of public safety experience and each contribute their experience to the mission of the Division.

Reserves have completed the same or similar initial police certification training, and background and screening processes as our full-time officers. Reserves are required to attend all quarterly training and complete other training and ongoing certifications to maintain their credentials.

Most of our reserves have been with us for years and we want to recognize the years of dedicated serve each has contributed to the Division and the citizens of Gahanna over the years.

Local Waste Services to take over refuse collection in 2022 Beginning January 1, 2022, the City of Gahanna will transition the current refuse, recycling, and yard waste collection services to a new provider, Local Waste Services Ltd. This switch to Local Waste will help keep costs down for residents – as their trash collection rates for 2022 were lower than the current vendor - but there's even more to like. Residents will now be able to set out all collections (trash/yard waste/ recycling) for one collection day. And, all residents will also be provided a free 95-gallon trash can. We know what you’re thinking – that’s a huge trash can! Most of our residents generate enough trash to fill the new trash can, which will prevent multiple trips to the curb. We’ve created a short video about this “state-of-the-art” trash can, and you can watch this short video from our Public Service and Engineering staff—and all the things this new trash receptacle CAN do!

Buckeye Candy Company Candy culture runs deep for those who love sweet confections. Depending on when you were born, you may be a fan of Bun Bars, NECCO Wafers, or Pop Rocks. If you’re part of the TikTok craze (or your kids are), you’re likely familiar with Toxic Waste Slime Lickers, Planet Gummies, and Slaps.

Jay and Shana Sokol, owners of Buckeye Candy Company, are tapped into their clientele’s cravings, no matter their age.

“We are lifelong candy lovers and want to spread the joy that a sweet treat can bring,” Jay said. “Whether it’s a favorite treat from decades ago or the latest TikTok trend, we have something for everyone—with more than 1,000 candies in stock.”

Before they opened the shop three years ago, the Sokols considered locations all around Columbus. They settled on Gahanna when they discovered how supportive the community is of small businesses. And being close to I-270 doesn’t hurt, either!

“The easy accessibility from anywhere in Columbus is a bonus, but the warm nature of the Gahanna community is unlike anything we’ve seen anywhere else,” Jay said. “We have families who bring us vegetables from their gardens and share their favorite treats from around the world that we may not be familiar with. That doesn’t happen at big chains or franchises with no stake in the community.”

DEVELOPMENT NEWS High Bank Distillery High Bank Distillery Co. will be opening a second location in the Gahanna/New Albany area in Spring 2022. The new spot will be located at 1379 E. Johnstown Road in Gahanna, and will feature a 7,500 square-foot full-service bar and restaurant. This location will also include barrel storage, an expansive outdoor patio, and a retail store.

President and Cofounder Jordan Helman explained that their guests love the open atmosphere and feel of their current space.

He added, “We constantly listen to our guest feedback, and this has played a large role in the design of our second location. Our goal with High Bank 2 is to keep those key elements, integrate elements of our distillery operation, and find unique design moments to differentiate this space from our first location while staying true to the High Bank brand.”

The High Bank family is thrilled about continuing to grow their brand in the Central Ohio community, Helman added. “Our team has worked tirelessly over the past 3 plus years to build our restaurant and distillery brand, and the support we have received from the community has been more than we could have ever expected.”

Master Distiller and Co-founder Adam Hines stated that the expansion is an opportunity to have a larger regional impact. “Since opening in 2018, the goal for our distillery has always been to create the best product for our customers.

Ron Stokes Sr. Teamwork is second nature to Gahanna resident Ron Stokes Sr. The former OSU basketball standout learned it on the court, and continues to see it in action as the color analyst for The Ohio State Men's Basketball Radio Network and co-host of The Chris Holtmann Show.

And now, it’s a different home team helping Stokes assemble a slew of successful businesses: his family.

Shortly after graduating OSU with a marketing degree in 1985, Stokes and his wife Lavita settled in Gahanna to raise their children, Laurel, Amber, Ronnie Jr., and Sydney.

Eager to utilize his marketing acumen, Ron purchased a business.

This resulted in Three-Leaf Productions, which provides creative marketing and media consulting. In another strategic move, the Stokes launched LARS Properties, LLC—a family-owned company offering a variety of customizable services to individual construction projects.

Choosing Gahanna as the place for his thriving family and businesses was a natural choice for Ron and Lavita.

"We love the community atmosphere, and it made all the sense in the world to establish our business here as well," he said. "Selfishly, our office is only 3.9 miles from our front door! We like the proximity to the airport, accessibility to major highways, great local businesses, fantastic support from the Mayor's office and city entities; plus, being close to one of the best retail centers in the country: Easton."

The Stokes want to make sure they’re part of the community for a long time to come, too.

"We take great pride that each family member has ownership and responsibility in the company. It's a legacy driven for multiple generations: we'll be there for our customers," Ron said.

To this end, Ronnie Stokes Jr. will be overseeing the painting project for the new 37,500 square foot Gahanna branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library for LARS, LLC. The Gahanna alumnus is already feeling a sense of community pride in the project.

"I’m really excited about the new library!” Ronnie Jr. said. “I remember my mom taking us to the old library when we were kids, and we had to pick up materials for book reports.”

Here in Gahanna, Ron, his family, and their pair of businesses enjoy permanent home-court advantage.

“Gahanna is home,” he said.

Take a look inside Gahanna’s world-class filmmaking community.

A

fter a quick glance around Scott Handel’s expansive studio and videography equipment rental center, Ohio HD, you’ll find some of the most cutting-edge video gear in the entire world.

The litany of Handel’s impressive gadgets include sought-after motion control robotics and what’s known as an LED wall, which can render photorealistic three-dimensional backdrops that help address many of the limitations greenscreens present.

Handel estimates that less than 50 of these exist in North America today.

“Somebody once said to me it’s like we’re growing corn in the desert,” he said with a chuckle. “We have some equipment here in Gahanna that you really only see in New York and LA.” Handel is one of several Gahanna-area directors and filmmakers that make the City an unexpected but undeniable hotbed for the cinema industry. →

Nathan William is another Gahanna filmmaker.

William, who is known for his work in visual effects and owns the Gahanna-based FrameWork Visuals, has a knack for bringing his massive ambition and creativity into shoots.

“My mentality is always to go for broke on my concepts; to try the craziest thing we can think of, and find a way to make it work,” he said.

While directing a music video for a song called “Live on Forever” by The Afters—

UNIQUELY GAHANNA • NOVEMBER 2021

which currently has over one million views on YouTube—one particuarly crazy idea landed him in deep water. Literally.

To capture several underwater shots, he and an entire camera crew found themselves attached to weights at the bottom of an indoor pool used by diving instructors.

And while Handel and William are experts in the visual sector of cinema, another pair of Gahanna filmmakers have mastered a different aspect of the craft: Storytelling.

Mike Edwards is the founder of The 5 Stones Group, a Gahanna-based film

company with 14 different Emmy Awards to its name. There’s a good chance you’ve seen some of his work, too, as his documentaries regularly air on PBS. One of these films (which is itself responsible for a pair of Emmys) is called “Searching for Augusta: The Forgotten Angel of Bastogne”. It chronicles the story of a Congolese nurse who saved hundreds of lives during the Second World War, but wasn’t recognized until nearly 50 years later.

“For me, I think, it’s all about story,” he said. “If you tell a good story, you don’t think about where it’s going to go; it will find the audience.”

Long-time Gahanna-based videographer Tim Courlas would agree. Courlas, who has shot everything from political campaigns to commercial ads and is considered a stalwart in the community, has also discovered a passion for documentary storytelling.

Since 2017, he’s been crafting a documentary focused on a 90 yearold master penman (as in, a master of penmanship) that debuted October 16th.

And Courlas—like Edwards, Handel, and William—feels lucky to call Gahanna home. The four filmmakers (who know one another, and often work on each others’ sets or exchange gear) have each had a hand in making the City something of a filmmaking oasis.

“It's something special in a city of around 30,000 people to have so many creatives coming together on this unique thing: filmmaking,” Courlas said. “We work together; we know each other. It feels like this really micro industry sometimes, yet we’re all doing big things.”♦

How one schools-parks partnership is growing a love for the outdoors in Gahanna students →

O

n a recent beautiful September school day, 75 Royal Manor Elementary School students waded into a creek, imagining themselves as reallife naturalists. This customized program is just one of many born from a creative collaboration between the Gahanna Parks & Recreation Department (GPRD) and Gahanna Jefferson Public Schools (GJPS), and this partnership is stoking a love for the natural world in area students.

Teacher Shanna Mann said her third-grade students were able to record their findings, thoughts, and feelings during the Creekside Exploration program, inspiring the students to produce narrative stories that stuck with them long after the end-of-day bell rang. “This was a phenomenal experience that many students claimed was their best day of school ever,” she said.

“There is nothing better than providing students with authentic opportunities to engage and apply their classroom learning,” Mann continued. “This partnership between GPRD, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and Royal Manor

Elementary created an exciting, hands-on learning opportunity that enriched the science, reading, and writing curriculum, and promoted an appreciation for and stewardship of our local natural resources.”

For this particular program (this one was the only program that saw ODNR as a partner as well), Recreation Supervisor Sarah Mill and her team called in the city’s arborist and horticulturist to help lead guided tours, making the hands-on experience even more engaging for students.

“It makes sense for us to seek ways to engage with our local schools,” Mill said. “These are children and educators who live and learn in the Gahanna Community, and these opportunities give them a chance to see their parks and open spaces in a new way.”

According to Karlin Wolfe, GPRD Coordinator, this type of work often has a lasting positive impact on local students. “Stream studies help foster an interest in nature exploration—teaching students about water quality, how to observe the effects of pollution, and the sensitive balance needed to

maintain a healthy biodiversity,” she said.

In addition to the Creekside Exploration program, the GPRD team has been partnering with GJPS for 13 years to offer the always-popular Adventure Days for sixth graders.

According to Brad Barboza, Principal of Middle School East, 400 students recently took part in the school’s 2021 Adventure Day, ​including seventh graders who were unable to participate in the program in 2020.

“We are helping the students transition from multiple elementary schools to one middle school,” he said. “We want the students to push themselves to learn about their limits, learn about their classmates and teachers, and come together as a class as middle-schoolers.”

And there could be even more of these productive partnerships in the near future. Due to the programs’ popularity, the GPRD team has started receiving requests to expand them.

As a GPRD facilitator of these programs, Wolfe regularly sees the potential impact they have on students, both today and in the long-term.

“I think—with all of our programming that is nature exploration or outdoor recreation-based— we strive to create in each person a sense of excitement and interest in being outdoors, fueling their wonder about nature,” she said. “We want people to engage with the natural world around them and have an understanding of how those things are all connected. Amazing Athletes of Central Ohio Amazing Athletes is a developmental physical program. Teaching methods are based on age, with tot classes focused on discovery-based learning using structured physical activities. Classes for older students encourage the exploration and development of athletic skills through different sports.

Amazing Tots (ages 1.5-2.5 years) Thurs. Jan. 13-Feb. 17 5:30-6 p.m.

Edington Family Fitness (Programs are Virtual) ALL fit classes are still VIRTUAL. Off days are on-demand/pre-recorded, not live.

A master CrossFit Games world champion, instructor Shellie Edington participated in the CrossFit Games five times from 2013-2017 placing first, second, third, and fifth in the world. She founded Tumblin4Kids in 2000.
