KEEP YOUR FUTURE BRIGHT

Buckle up, grads. Your life depends on it.

Mixologist of the Month

Heidi Schulz

What’s your Beam Drink of Choice? I love the Japanese Gari Highball. It’s refreshing with great nods of whiskey and ginger.

How Large is the Whiskey Collection? We have approximately 800 bottles of whiskey and around 300 other spirits, including tequila, gin, rum, vodka, and other cordials.

What Inspired You to Get into this Industry? I love talking to people and fast paced environments. I love getting to provide a positive experience for customers and share my passion for whiskey and cocktails.

What’s Something People Should Know About Windsor Block Bar? Jeane Henrichsen, who is one of our owners, studied architecture at Yale University and designed the bar. I love all the details she thought of and trinkets throughout the space.

What’s your Favorite Part about Rapid City?

It’s a great mix of city living and outdoor recreation, while still getting that small town South Dakota sense of community.

What’s the Most Popular Drink? The Black is the New Orange is my personal favorite.

What’s your Favorite South Dakota Experience?

The Black Hills in the summertime will always be my favorite. I love how easy it is to experience the great outdoors.

“ The Bramble Park Zoo has been a major attraction in Watertown since 1912, and moved into our current location in 1940,” said Olivia Wulff, zookeeper and registrar.

Resting upon 15 acres, the expansive zoo offers a “come closer” experience to a wide variety of species of exotic animals, from kangaroos and otters, to lemurs and a tiger, and many critters in between.

“The Bramble Park Zoo is passionate about educating the public on the importance of natural and exotic wildlife that call the zoo home, and their wild counterparts,” explained Wulff.

Wulff carries a multitude of roles under her belt.

Her position as a zookeeper involves providing primary care to kangaroos, wolves, and coyotes, while her duties as registrar involve recording notes, observations, and medical records.

Wulff works alongside Bramble Park’s consulting veterinarian, Dr. Andrea Hennen, to aid in caring for sick or injured animals.

“I love the variety and complexity of my job,” expressed Wulff. “I’m truly living the dream every day that I get to care for these amazing creatures.”

Get to know Wulff and where she spends her time outside of the zoo fences.

Five Exotic Facts about Wulff Five Exotic Facts about wulff

My daughter is the light of my life. I’m proud to call her my “mini-me.” She’s very fond of the zoo’s striped skunk, which has been a great addition to our ambassador animal collection.

I own two cats and two dogs, which has been the least amount of pets I’ve had in my adult life. I’ve always been surrounded by animals, ever since I was a little kid.

Ironically, my husband is an avid hunter, and I enjoy hunting as well. We both hold a deep respect for animals, and we primarily eat venison in our household.

My 2024 resolution is to partake in things that bring me joy.

One Two Three Four Five

My favorite holiday is Christmas, but it’s closely followed by Halloween. I always dress up for Halloween no matter the theme or occasion.

After Hours

The zoo is my favorite place to be in Watertown. You’ll often find me here on my days off or after work walking around and taking pictures of the animals with my family. I love seeing the animals from the guests’ perspective.

Walks Along the Shore

Stokes-Thomas City Park & Campground is a great place to walk along Lake Kampeska . I enjoy taking my family and our dogs to walk along the beach or stay for an event, like live music or Cookin’ on Kampeska

Summer Nights

I love visiting the Foundation Plaza downtown, especially for Live —a live music event hosted every Thursday evening throughout the summer. Bring your chair and some cash for the local vendors serving food and drinks. You’ll often find me sitting with my family enjoying a cold beer from Brewing Company and a delicious hotdog from Dempsey’s Proper Hot Dog Co.

“ The city of Watertown has exceeded my expectations, and I enjoy living in such an upbeat and everchanging community.”
Olivia Wulff
THE ROAD TRIP ISSUE may 2024

Family Outings

I enjoy taking my family on walks at Pelican State Park , which is located just outside of Watertown. The paved roads and grassy paths make hiking easy with a stroller or off-roading with dogs. The pollinator gardens are a great place to see natural wildlife. Finally, there are various amenities like a playground, picnic shelters, and restrooms that make the park comfortable and easily accessible.

Tourist Destination

The Redlin Art Center is a popular destination right off of the interstate featuring artwork from Terry Redlin. There are trails located outside of the center that are great for dog walks.

Splish Splash

My daughter, Lyla , loves the water, so we frequent the Watertown Family Aquatic Center. I’m fond of the zero-depth pool where it’s safe for toddlers to splash around in.

Early Riser

Before I had my daughter, I loved attending early morning workout classes at Prairie Lakes Wellness Center. They offer a wide variety of fun, upbeat classes like Body Pump, Barre, Turbo Kick , and more.

A Local Staple

Dempsey's Brewery Restaurant & Pub is my favorite local restaurant in town. They have amazing pizza, and my favorite is the CSBA with chicken, spinach, bacon, and alfredo sauce.

What’s the Buzz?

The Bramble Park Zoo partnered with Watertown Brewing Company to raise funds for a new gray wolf habitat. We created a Kölsch-style brew, Bramble Buzz , made with honey from the zoo’s beehive. With every pint of Bramble Buzz sold, a dollar is donated towards the upcoming habitat.

605 ROAD TRIP

Watertown

For this year’s road trip, the 605 team hopped into our Sprinter Van, Vincent Van-Go, and traveled to Watertown for the 11th Annual Cookin’ on Kampeska. Over the three-day event, visitors gather together to experience live music, local cuisine, and family-friendly activities.

Throughout our trip, the team was ecstatic to explore what Watertown had to offer with its unique food, drink, and entertainment options.

An Upclose Experience

Our first stop in Watertown was the Bramble Park Zoo to partake in the VIP experience. We were greeted by zoo director Dan Miller as we hopped onto his golf cart, and began our journey to our first exhibit.

Our short ride led us to Linus, the sloth. Here we met up with zoo keeper, Olivia Wulff, who took us behind the scenes.

As we stepped into Linus’s enclosure, everyone took their rightful turn to pet him, and some of us even received little kisses from the sluggish treedweller, which in my opinion was the best part of the trip.

We met the zoo’s camel, Bobby Sue, and here 605’s Alana and John Snyder and Cailyn Patterson stepped right up to feed Bobby Sue her lunch.

Our final exhibits included meeting the North American River Otters, Don, Baro, and Monty, the American Black Bears, Yoni, and Hailey, and the Snow Leopard, Maddie

The rest of our visit was filled with taking advantage of the photo opportunities the zoo has to offer.

Popular Pretzels

We piled back into our van and headed to fill our rumbling bellies at Oh Baby O’s. The soft pretzel shop has become a Watertown staple.

The local eatery offers a wide variety of menu items like pizzas, pretzel bites, hot dogs, and sweet desserts.

As we munched on our array of dishes, Oh Baby O’s began to fill up with hungry customers on their lunch break. We saw how popular the shop has become since opening 20 years ago.

Downtown Delights

After satisfying our hunger, we headed towards downtown Watertown to meet with Lindsay Stangl , director of marketing for Visit Watertown

The team trickled into Gather—a coffee and gift shop that has become a classic stop for everyday coffee addicts, foodies, and shoppers.

We ordered an afternoon pick-me-up before sitting down and chatting with Stangl, who led us to more downtown shops: AMJ Style, 1906 Boutique and Salon, Makepeace Jewelers, Watertown Confectionery/Ghost Town Winery, and Hot Mamma Mack’s

Hot Mamma Mack’s specializes in ready-made freezer meals, homemade salsa, spicy pickles, and more. Recently the storefront has become a station for South Dakota State University Ice Cream—a true South Dakota treat.

Next, we headed to Foundation Plaza , which allows locals to bring their kids to the new Splash Pad

Kampeska: Night One

Our next stop was The Prop —a family-friendly pub resting along the banks of Lake Kampeska .

A unique aspect of The Prop is the ceiling covered in business cards and signed dollar bills, so of course 605 Magazine had to be a part of this long-time tradition.

After our filling meal, the team headed to the first night of the annual Cookin’ on Kampeska . The three-day event consists of live music, a friendly cooking competition, and bouncy houses for kids.

Alana, John, Cailyn, and I wandered around StokesThomas Lake City Park , taking in the action and talking with locals.

We listened to the music of The Johnny Holm Band before loading our van back up and heading back to My Place Hotel to get some shut-eye.

A Hauntingly Good Time

The next morning, 605’s Greta Smith joined us as we headed to our first stop of the day: Backroads Coffee House & Lunchboxx . The staff welcomed and served us an abundance of food and drinks.

What our team enjoyed most was the beverage flight with three of Backroads' signature drinks: Cookies and Cream Cold Brew, S'mores Latte, and Ultra Violet

We left with drinks in hand and headed to the building in the heart of downtown, The Goss Opera House Jamie Mack , executive director, guided us through the facility.

The Goss Opera House serves the town as an event space for concerts, weddings, and corporate events.

Mack told us of the legendary ghost story of traveling performer, Maud , who burned to death in a boarding room in 1936.

We continued our tour, but not before John told us of hearing a whisper in his ear, where we stressed it was the ghost.

He, to this day, believes it was one of our staff members, who were nowhere near him at the time of said whisper.

As our tour concluded, we wandered into Maude’s Mercantile, the neighboring boutique full of goods and wondrous curiosities.

A Nosh & a Cut

The 605 team met up with the rest of the Visit Watertown team at Harry’s Haircuts Bar & Grill to catch up and enjoy comradery.

Harry’s, a family-friendly sports bar, serves a large selection of hamburgers, in-house smoked wings, salads, wraps, nachos, tacos, and appetizers.

On top of the extensive food menu, the bar hosts 36 beers on tap and a full liquor bar. But what most visitors don’t expect is that you can get a fresh haircut during your visit.

In the same building is an upscale hair salon specializing in men’s haircuts and beard trims.

John was eager to get a haircut, so as our team sat munching on appetizers and sipping on a flight of beers, John was getting a fresh new 'do.

Kampeska: Night 2

We stopped for dinner at The Sandbar—a restaurant nestled on the shore of Lake Kampeska.

As we waited for our meal, Greta and I walked around in the water, while Cailyn desperately tried to lure a seagull her way.

Once we headed back out for the second night of Cookin' on Kampeska, we spent time roaming around, checking out the People’s Choice Chislic Competition, and watching the KXLG Radio Boat Parade.

A line of boats soared across the water while families watched, played in the water, and enjoyed live music from Breaking Bob

Killing Karaoke

Next, we headed back to Harry’s for a night of karaoke. Located above the main floor is a speakeasy atmosphere with a stage, full bar, and arcade games.

Greta, Cailyn, John, Alana, and I all took the stage, performing a song or two for the small group of customers in the bar.

The night ended with a jam session on the way back to the hotel, celebrating a successful road trip.

Breakfast Bites

One more stop remained on our itinerary: Wheel Inn Café.

The family restaurant is open seven days a week, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The staff prides itself on good service and home-cooked food. We sat down with Stangl and ordered a hearty breakfast.

Once we finished our plates of eggs, sausage, bacon, and pancakes, the team said “see you soon” to Stangl before heading back to Sioux Falls.

605 TRIES

During the annual Cookin’ on Kampeska event, hundreds of locals and visitors gather together for a sizzling good time.

Hosted against the picturesque backdrop of Lake Kampeska, the event offers three days of sunshine, food, activities, and entertainment for all ages.

“The overall goal of this event is three-fold: to create a signature summer event for Watertown, emphasizing Lake Kampeska and its family-friendly features, and providing activities that elevate the quality of life experience in our community,” stated Tim Sheehan, CEO and president of the Watertown Area Chamber of Commerce

The festivities kick off on Thursday evening and last through Saturday. Throughout the event, check out music from local musicians, food trucks, activities for the whole family, and more.

Throughout Friday and Saturday, there are two People’s Choice food competitions where patrons can cast their votes to crown a winner.

During a warm July evening, the 605 team headed to StokesThomas Lake City Park to Cookin’ on Kampeska’s opening night.

The first night is centered around local music, earning the title of Thursday Night Live on Lake Kampeska

SATURDAY: PORK BACKYARD

“Thursday evening is family-friendly, hosting a plethora of activities for kids to run around and enjoy, like bounce houses and the onsite playground, while parents can lounge and listen to the scheduled band,” said Sheehan.

Sprawled across a grassy knoll were lawn chairs seating adults with beverages in hand, enjoying conversation and bopping along to the music of The Johnny Holm Band

“Cookin’ on Kampeska typically switches gears in the evening,” explained Sheehan. “It’s more adult leaning with a major focus on live music.”

We used this opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the event, capture photos and videos, and chat with locals.

Our team gathered at our self-titled “home base” by the stage to watch kids and adults show off their best dance moves.

On Friday, there are plenty of activities for patrons to partake in. Kids can enjoy inflatables and balloon art in the kids' clubhouse.

The main event of Friday night, though, is the People’s Choice Chislic Competition.

“With the help of our sponsors, each participating team is provided 30 pounds of beef roast that they cube, season, and prepare for more than 1,000 hungry taste testers,” shared Sheehan.

YOU'VE GOT SOMEPLACE TO BE

GOT TO BE

BUCKLE UP FOR A DRIVER'S ED REFRESHER

UP FOR A ED

We've all got someplace to be this season. The only way to get there is by driving safely. This quick refresher will ensure you, your passengers and everyone else on the road has a safer summer.

So, sit down, strap in and listen up. No pencil required.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE SOUTH DAKOTA OFFICE OF HIGHWAY SAFETY

GOING BACK TO BASICS

We're kickin' it old school to teach an important lesson — that there's no finish line when it comes to safe driving. Following the rules of the road should last a lifetime.

You've been navigating South Dakota's streets and highways for years now, but let's be honest, we could all use a refresher. Traffic laws evolve, road conditions change and bad habits are born every day. These tips will help you polish your skills and make you a more confident and safer driver — just in time for summer.

STAY IN YOUR LANE

Keep an eye on the lines and stay in your lane whenever you make a turn. Left turns should always be made into the left lane, closest to the center line. And all right turns should be made into the right lane, closest to the curb.

PULL OFF FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES

They've got someplace to be. Someplace important. Always move over to the right lane, then slow down or stop when emergency vehicles with flashing lights and sirens drive by. This includes ambulances, the fire department and police.

GET THE FULL PICTURE

Checking your mirrors is important, but they don't show everything. Make sure you shoulder check before lane changes and turns. A quick glance over your shoulder can eliminate all blind spots and make your drive a safer one.

WATCH FOR ROAD WORK

Road construction and summer go hand in hand. But work zones aren't there just to make your drive a hassle. Crew members are working to improve the roads and make your drive a better one. Make sure you always slow down and stay alert in work zones.

LOOK FOR FLASHING LIGHTS

Always proceed with caution. Drivers with yellow flashing lights have the right of way through intersections but should always slow down and look both ways. Drivers with red flashing lights? Treat it like a stop sign. Come to a full stop and advance when it's safe to do so.

LEAVE ENOUGH SPACE

No one likes a tailgater. The easiest way to keep a safe following distance is by obeying the three-second rule. This gives you enough time to react to the car in front of you.

Attendees looking to participate in the contest receive a ballot to cast their vote for the team they believe served the best meat.

605’s Alana Snyder, Cailyn Patterson, Greta Smith, and I wandered around the campground, taking in the decorated tents of the participants.

“These teams also enter their meat into the judged portion of the event for a second chance to win,” added Sheehan.

Once the competition was coming to a close, we met back up with 605’s John Snyder to sit along the water and watch the upcoming KXLG Radio Boat Parade. The parade is made up of decorated boats from participating local businesses, showcasing the appreciation and love they hold for Lake Kampeska.

We watched boats glide across the water as the sun was setting before making our way back to the entrance. Just as we were about to hop into our van, we witnessed a car driving out of the lake.

The team was intrigued, yet confused by this phenomenon, until John approached the driver to ask how this was possible. We learned it was an Amphicar, which is a portmanteau of "amphibious" and "car.”

“THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE! WHETHER IT'S A BABY, YOUR GRANDPARENTS, OR ANYONE IN BETWEEN, THEY'LL HAVE A GREAT TIME.”

Friday night's festivities ended with a performance from Breaking Bob

On Saturday, Cookin’ on Kampeska began bright and early with a half marathon at 7 a.m. and a 5K run at 9 a.m., but at 10 a.m. it was all about the kids, Sheehan shared.

“The kids have the chance to enjoy the Little Miss and Mister Kampeska Contest, Kids Magical Experience, face painting, balloon art, and more,” he added.

Kids aged 6 to 12 have the chance to participate in the Kids Que, competing to see who can grill and garnish the best hot dog.

“We want to encourage the love of barbecuing to the next generation,” said Sheehan.

The youth competition leads right into the second contest of the day— the People’s Choice Pork Competition

As with the chislic contest, participants receive 30 pounds of pork shoulder roast that will be tasted by the hungry crowd.

ESCAPE

If you’ve been to Watertown, you may have seen the sign with a pelican in a red Adirondack chair peeking out on Highway 20.

And if you’ve ever been inside, you know the restaurant it belongs to: The Sandbar, is the perfect destination for a family-friendly night out.

Becky and Jamie Andrews bought The Sandbar— formerly North Shore Chophouse & Banquet Hall—in February 2023.

After remodeling and turning the once supper club into what Becky describes as a “lake life family restaurant,” The Sandbar opened in March of 2023.

Becky is a stay-at-home mom of three children, as well as the general manager at the restaurant. In addition to parenting, she spends much of her time behind the bar.

“A bar scene is a bar scene, but you can also have a family scene, so we gravitate towards that,” she said.

THE ROAD TRIP ISSUE may 2024

Culinarily, the restaurant has a full menu and a full bar. Menu items range from specialty pizzas like The Philly and Meat Lovers, to pasta dishes like Buffalo Chicken Mac and The Bangin Blush Pasta

Other sections of the menu include appetizers, tacos, quesadillas, and salads.

“We are known for our homemade pizzas and our buildyour-own pastas, which are very popular,” said Becky.

Build-your-own pasta dishes come with a choice of three different noodle varieties, four kinds of sauces, 10 different toppings, and about 10 different kinds of veggies to add.

The fully stocked boat-shaped bar offers over 20 different rotating tap beers and a specialty drink menu.

Becky reveals that The Sandbar will be putting together a summer drink menu, as well as a patio menu that features finger foods and appetizers.

“It will be a lot of grab-and-go, so you can take it back on your boat,” she said.

“OUR PHILLY CHEESE PIZZA IS PROBABLY THE BEST I’VE EVER HAD. THAT, & OUR CHEESEBURGER PIZZA ARE WHAT PEOPLE KNOW US FOR.”

The namesake for the restaurant is a sandbar in Lake Kampeska where people often come to play and enjoy the lake.

“On Sundays, families come out, park their boats, play football, and hang out,” said Becky. “Music is on, and everybody’s floating.”

The Sandbar’s spacious outdoor patio provides plenty of room to play, as well as a sandbox for the kids to dig in.

In addition to all the outdoor activities, the restaurant has an indoor arcade, which Becky says the staff is in the process of revamping.

Arcade games include shuffleboard, putting and hunting simulators, Skee-Ball, darts, and a claw machine, among other new additions.

“There are also two pool tables, but they are outside of the arcade, so adults can play pool without the kids running into them,” added Becky.

Three cornhole boards can be found indoors or outdoors, depending on the weather, and The Sandbar has a gas pump, a dock, and jet ski parking that allows lake goers to get gas and a bite to eat.

SANDBAR SCIENCE

A SANDBAR IS A LONG AND NARROW BANK OF SAND THAT SITS JUST AT OR BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE WATER.

SANDBARS, ALSO KNOWN AS SHOALS, ARE FORMED WHERE A CURRENT CONTINUALLY DEPOSITS SAND OR SEDIMENT.

“People usually come up and eat here, stay for a bit, and then go back on their boats. It’s a nice place to let your kids get off and burn some energy before you go back out,” shared Becky.

The beach area also boasts a larger-than-life red Adirondack chair for kids and adults alike to climb on or pose for a picture.

After their first year in business, The Sandbar is looking forward to the upcoming season.

“We’ve been doing a lot of revamping through the winter, and we’re really excited to see what the summer brings,” said Becky.

The Andrews’s goal is to have the community feel like they are always welcome at the restaurant.

Every weekend the Sandbar hosts DJs, live music, and karaoke, as well as events such as fundraising bingoes and birthday parties in an effort to give back.

“That’s the kind of thing that makes my heart happy—the fact that we’re catering to everybody,” said Becky. “It’s a place for everyone to come and be treated well, and be a part of a family in the community.”

Backroads Coffeehouse & Lunchboxx On the Menu

During her time as a teacher, Melissa Hericks and her colleagues carried out a running joke about starting a coffee truck.

The group had witnessed the challenges within their roles as teachers, but saw how quickly the challenges were evolving.

“We all had families and our own lives, but often joked about owning some shares in a coffee truck and supporting other teachers by delivering coffee to the various schools in Sioux Falls,” said Hericks.

In 2016, Hericks took the chance to step back from teaching and moved to Watertown when she married her husband.

“Watertown has always felt like home to me since I grew up on a ranch a couple hours away,” shared Hericks.

Though growing up on a ranch was challenging, the experience instilled a strong work ethic and motivated Hericks to discover her purpose.

With that mindset and her expansive set of hobbies like baking, woodwork, repurposing furniture, coffee brewing, and winemaking, Hericks began brainstorming what Watertown needed.

“I found the north part of Watertown was slim on eating establishments and nutritional foods as a whole,” stated Hericks.

THE ROAD TRIP ISSUE may 2024

Shortly after this revelation, Hericks purchased a piece of land on North Highway 81 and opened Backroads Coffeehouse & Lunchboxx in November 2019.

Hericks shared Backroads Coffeehouse & Lunchboxx started by offering a variety of drinks, such as coffee, tea, and smoothies.

“We also had a small bakery and one sandwich— which is still our number one selling sandwich, the CranAlmond Chicken Salad Sandwich—but the community quickly showed me that they wanted more food options,” she added.

Hericks implemented her community's suggestion, adding an all-day breakfast menu including the Dakota Croissant Sandwich and Breakfast Bowl

She also added seven lunch menu items, from salads like the Chipotle Salad and Caesar Salad , to sandwiches and wraps like the Clubhouse and the Turkey Cranberry Salsa Sandwich

Customers can customize their meals with various side options, such as macaroni and cheese or soup, chips and salsa, a baguette, or a house salad.

“Our dishes are made in-house, which speaks volumes to how popular these dishes have become,” shared Hericks.

“We are often the first stop when cyclists come through town, or the first outing with newborns, bridal/bachelor gatherings, and the weekly meeting spot for business meetings.

Other culinary options include oatmeal, granola, yogurt parfaits, and a selection of rolls, pastries, and cookies that are baked fresh every morning.

“Our house-made bars and cookies, like our Scotcharoos and Monster Cookies, are a Midwest staple,” said Hericks.

As for beverages, Backroads Coffeehouse & Lunchboxx has made a name for itself with their smooth Cold Brew and espresso.

Hericks shares there’s one cold brew item that gained instant popularity, enough to achieve a permanent spot on the Backroads menu.

The One with the Cheesecake, also known as The Chandler Cold Brew, was introduced during the Friends TV show drink series.

Other popular coffee options include the Latte Caramel Macchiato, the Turtle Mocha , and the Espresso Macchiato.

For non-coffee drinkers, Backroads offers an abundant variety of sweet drinks like their Hand-Shaken Summer Teas, Chai Lattes, House-Made Lemonade, Italian Cream Soda , Refreshers, and Lotus Plant Energy drinks.

Hericks says a popular choice during the summertime are the Backroads Cloud Drinks. Choose between the Snickerdoodle Cloud , Cookies and Cream Cloud , Frozen Hot Chocolate, and more.

Cloud drinks can be made "stormy" by adding espresso and whipped cream.

Backroads Coffeehouse & Lunchboxx is more than an eatery—it’s a haven for the Watertown community.

“I want to be a platform for others,” explained Hericks. “I want to help launch other small businesses in our area and help support their passion.”

Hericks holds a labor of love towards local artists. She shares she often visits art festivals to search for new artwork to showcase to her customers.

“If I see something that fits our atmosphere, I reach out to the artist and tell them of an opportunity to present their work on my walls,” expressed Hericks.

She continued, “At Backroads, creating a presence for them is important to us.”

Hericks also sells unique antiques from Sweden and Southern Europe.

To continue to support the community, Backroads offers a rental space—the Americana Room—to its customers.

The large room caters up to 25 guests paired with a full food and beverage menu.

Customers can rent the entire establishment for a larger event, accommodating up to 100 guests.

“The atmosphere of those events is incredible,” shared Hericks. “Our home is welcoming, and it’s used to create memories.”

The growth of Backroads Coffeehouse & Lunchboxx isn’t finished yet, shares Hericks.

“We’re currently expanding to office catering,” she said. “The next phase of Backroads Lunchboxx is still evolving.”

As a self-titled visionary, Hericks sees Backroads as more than a restaurant; she sees it as a platform for leadership, honesty, and honing in on skills to follow a passion.

“I want to give others the steps to visualize their passion, question how hard they’re willing to work, and teach them the skills to execute it,” said Hericks.

Oh Baby O’s

For over 20 years, Oh Baby O’s has made a name for itself selling specialty pretzels, pizza, hot dogs, and sweet treats.

Founded by Deb Borkius, Oh Baby O’s opened its doors to the public in the early 2000s.

Borkius’s love affair with pretzels began during her time at Pretzel Maker, located in the Watertown Mall. When the establishment closed down, Borkius was inspired to open a restaurant solely dedicated to soft pretzels and complementary dishes.

For years, Oh Baby O’s grew a recognizable reputation until COVID ultimately closed the eatery in 2020. But as life with the pandemic became easier, Oh Baby O’s found a new owner in Sara Meyer

“I was a manager at a convenience store before a state inspector came to me and shared that she thought I would be a good fit for running the restaurant,” shared Meyer.

She continued, “At first I didn’t think it was for me, but I eventually went to talk to the previous owner and it all just fell into my lap.”

“Nothing here is premade—it’s all fresh.”

Meyer committed to the challenge, but admitted there was a learning curve.

“I had zero experience in the food industry outside of working at a Perkins Restaurant & Bakery and a Pizza Ranch in my youth,” she laughed. “I had to get Servsafe Certified and start the business back up from almost scratch.”

Meyer revamped Oh Baby O’s and added her own touches, but not without paying respect to Borkius’s legacy she had created.

“Our current menu is pretty much the same from when Baby O’s first opened, but I’ve eliminated and changed some things up,” shared Meyer.

Of course, the signature soft pretzel is a staple, but that’s just the beginning.

The menu boasts a variety of pizzas, like Little Italy or Buffalo Chicken, hot dogs like the Cowboy and Chili Dog, and Knucklehead Rolls like the Ya Baby and Philly Cheesesteak .

“The Knucklehead is the dish that Oh Baby O’s is known for,” said Meyer.

“In the summertime, we see a lot of travelers, & that’s fun to see because they could be coming from all over the place like New York or California.”

Meyer says Oh Baby O’s takes pride in using fresh and high-quality ingredients.

“The dough is made fresh every morning,” said Meyer. “It’s actually Deb’s grandmother's recipe that we use.”

Every order is fresh and from scratch, and that’s why Meyer doesn’t consider Oh Baby O’s a fast food establishment.

“You’re not going to find anything like this anywhere else,” said Meyer. “It’s nothing like Auntie Anne’s where all you get are Bavarian pretzels—it’s its own business.”

Since Meyer has taken the reins of Oh Baby O’s, the eatery has conjured up a strong, loyal following of returning and new customers.

“I have a lot of customers who’ve been through the good and the bad,” shared Meyer. “It’s amazing to see people who truly love the place and want it to succeed.”

The Prop The Prop

Nestled on the shores of Lake Kampeska sits The Prop—a quirky and inviting restaurant that has become a favorite among locals.

The laid-back pub offers more than just a place to grab a bite: The Prop is a spot to unwind, watch or play games, and soak up the unique atmosphere.

“It’s a family scene,” stated owner Conda Williams “It’s one of those atmospheres where families are comfortable coming to, and it’s a place where they can bring their kids.”

The Prop knows a thing or two about family, as the establishment has been a part of the Williams’s ancestry since the late 1960s.

What started as a convenience store under the creation of William “Billy” Williams, introduced the next generation of business for the famed Stony Point property—which was originally a homestead in 1888.

“Our building was built by my husband’s father, Billy,” said Conda.

At this time, many people were traveling, so introducing a store seemed natural, Conda shared, until her son, William “Willy” Monroe Willams entered the picture.

“He traveled back from Colorado in 1991, took over the property from my husband and I, created a restaurant and made it more organized,” said Conda.

Now the eatery serves up a classic American menu with a focus on burgers, sandwiches, and deep-fried side options.

One menu item that has become synonymous with The Prop is the infamous Garlic Cheeseburger

At The Prop, six generations of the Williams family have worked there in some capacity.

“Our garlic burger was made from a recipe by my dad, who came up with it 25 years ago. It’s been a hit ever since,” said daughter Emily Williams. “It’s the item people travel across the country for.”

Conda added, “Our signature is a beer, garlic cheeseburger, and fries.”

Other popular menu items include the Habanero Cheeseburger, the Bacon Cheeseburger, the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, and the Boomer’s Garlic Chicken Sandwich.

Pair the burgers and sandwiches with appetizers like French Fries, Sweet Potato Fries, Jalapeño Poppers, Mac & Cheese Bites, Fried Pickles, and more.

The Prop strives to create all of their meals with fresh ingredients, including ground hamburger from local butcher shops.

“The buns are baked fresh every day, and we buy all of our lettuce, tomatoes, onion, and bacon from our local grocery store, County Fair Foods Store,” said Emily.

Conda says The Prop isn't a typical fine-dining establishment—it embraces a casual, pub-like feel, complete with historical memorabilia and an abundance of multi-player games.

The walls are steeped in history, adorned with photographs and newspaper clippings that showcase the transition of Stony Point, old family photos, and memorabilia.

To play off of its lakeside location, The Prop also displays various fishermen tools, nets, and a large mounted Black Marlin caught by late owner, Willy.

Native Name

The origin of Lake Kampeska’s name comes from the Native American language, signifying it as the “Lake of Shining Shells.”

Throughout their visit, customers can entertain themselves with a free game of pool and shuffleboard, or bring in their own cards and board games.

“We aim to have an atmosphere of a person’s own recreation room,” said Conda.

The business name stems from another family endeavor that was created in the 1930s.

The Stella Mae, named after Billy’s mother, was a tour boat that offered excursions to passengers along Lake Kampeska. The

large boat had a prop—or propeller—which Williams detached and placed outside of the new building.

“For many years it was outside of our business and had a sign that said, ‘Give the prop a spin to keep us going,’” shared Conda.

The Prop holds a fun and iconic tradition that adds to its quirky charm. Visitors can come in and staple their business cards or signed dollar bills to the covered ceiling, allowing them to leave their mark and become part of the Prop’s story.

In addition to business cards and bills, lining the ceiling are obituaries.

“Over numerous years people used to come here with a loved one who has since passed. When they returned without them, they wanted to place a tribute to their deceased loved ones, so now we have what we call the ‘ Wall of Wings,’” shared Conda.

For Conda and the Willams family, The Prop is more than a restaurant— it’s a place where visitors can come together and create memories.

“The

Prop will always be a name to people where they can come and be comfortable as they are,” she said.

JaMie MAck

How did you end up in your current position?

I’ve always been passionate about the music and theater community and hosting events. When a position became available at The Goss, I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of it.

Where are your favorite places in Watertown?

I adore our downtown. It hosts local shops all run by people who genuinely care about our community. You can stop in Gather for a delicious coffee, then stroll down the street and stop in the boutiques. In the summer you can eat lunch in our new Foundation Plaza complete with a stage, splash pad, and playground. I also usually end up at Dempsey’s Brewery Restaurant & Pub at least once a week.

What’s one of your guilty pleasures & why?

I have several guilty pleasures: all kinds of music, Irish bar songs, musicals, and especially cheesy ‘80s rock. I also love a nice glass of red wine with a grilled steak—and finally—the Rocky movie franchise.

“ The Goss Opera House has been in the heart of downtown Watertown since 1889,” said executive director Jamie Mack

Since its inception, the facility has been operated by various entities—but in 2018, the opera house abruptly closed.

“The community rallied around it and raised over $20,000 in a matter of 24 hours,” explained Mack. “The nonprofit Friends of the Goss began its capital campaign and raised five million dollars to renovate the facility.”

The restored opera house is broken down into three categories, shares Mack.

“We’re a beautiful event facility, an entertainment venue, and we offer cultural and educational programming for people of all ages,” said Mack.

The event spaces blend historic charm with contemporary elegance, creating a unique venue for weddings, corporate events, concerts, and their Dinner & a Movie nights.

Learn more about the executive director, from her favorite parts of the job to her guilty pleasures.

What's something you want people to know about The Goss Opera House?

Our main focus at The Goss is to encourage people to engage with the arts. We rely heavily on community support to provide things like exhibit opportunities for Lake Area Technical College photography students, educational programs such as Learning and Libations for adults, and our annual “ Beads on One String ” event. “Beads on One String” invites all second-grade-age children to an event based on music and art, and is dedicated to connectedness and bullying prevention.

What’s something you’re passionate about?

I strongly believe in cherishing your community. Watertown is a great place to live, and helping to enhance the area is a priority for me.
