August is always bittersweet. It feels like summer just started, but now it feels like it's coming to a close. Thank goodness it ends with a bang with plenty of events throughout South Dakota (check out our 6 Things Not to Miss on page 10). The 77th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is taking place August 4-13, and the year 2000 Alana is freaking out about Blink-182 playing at the Buffalo Chip (sans diva Tom DeLonge) August 10. Speaking of motorcycles, this issue features the first Harley Davidson licensed artist, Scott Jacobs, who is located in Deadwood.

Another notable event is this year's That Sounds Decent at 8th & Railroad in downtown Sioux Falls August 26. Local hip hop trio Soulcrate will be celebrating 15 years on the local music scene.

Judd Hoos, another South Dakota band favorite, is also celebrating with a new album release and tour (including shows August 3-12 at the Loud American Roadhouse in Sturgis).

Music and events aside, this is our home issue. Our monthly house article is one of the most popular sections, because let's face it - we all want to creep in everyone's homes. It's the truth. In the August issue, we visit a log cabin and chat with the Fields family about downsizing (to 650 square feet!).

this magazine should not be copied in any way

We also get a glimpse into two South Dakota Airbnbs and chat with the Sturlaugsons and Wietings about how they started hosting and what it's like to share their homes with strangers.

Materials will be returned only if accompanied

Last, but not least, we stopped by 8th Avenue Bakery in Belle Fourche, which has been compared to a top-notch New York doughnut shop. Don't worry, we tried some... and I agree.

We hope this gives you home dĂŠcor inspiration, ideas on what to do this month, or at least makes you super hungry with our food and drink section (we're still full from Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen). May the end of your summer be grand.

“One strength of ours is being more of a cover band,” said Hornick. “You kind of learn what you like, what works for a crowd, and what works for you. A lot of us are influenced by live music. Rock has definitely taken a different face in the past 10 years.” The album was written and recorded mostly on the road, whether in a hotel room or in a grain elevator. Young set up a mobile studio wherever the band played each night to sample bass or guitar tracks live.

FROM HOMETOWN STREET DANCES TO THE STURGIS RALLY IS THE BAND OF SELF-PROCLAIMED “ROAD WARRIORS,” JUDD HOOS. THE BAND HAVE TOURED ALL OVER THE MIDWEST, FROM MONTANA TO MINNESOTA, AND RECENTLY DROPPED A NEW ALBUM EARLIER THIS SUMMER.

The band has been together since 2004 with original members Funk and Hornick. Besides playing covers, Judd Hoos has maintained focus on writing and recording their own music.

Anna Taylor, lead singer of the Sioux City blues-rock band 35th and Taylor, contributed to the title track on the new album.

“[We've] always had original music in the show, but in the last two years with Andy’s songwriting and the Bills brothers and everything that has come together, we realize there’s a core audience of Judd Hoos [fans who] want to hear the music we’re writing,” said Funk.

“Anna’s career is really taking off,” said Young. “The opportunity came up to do a duet with her, and we were happy that she agreed to it. It was great working with her.”

After touring and recording along the way, Judd Hoos released their first album, Music in the Dark, June 2. This album pulls from each band member’s varied influences and represents their identity as what Young simply referred to as an “American band.”

Judd Hoos will be returning to this year’s Sturgis Rally for 10 consecutive nights at the Loud American Roadhouse - a highly anticipated event for the band. Each night will be a showcase of both their covers and originals from the album.

Judd Hoos is comprised of Tyler Bills (lead singer, guitar), brother Devin Bills (guitar, mandolin, trombone and keys), Andy Young (guitar), Chris Hornick (bass), and Shane Funk (drums). The band is named after Funk’s friend. “We’re kind of like an American band and a melting pot of everybody’s individual influence coming together to “At the very beginning of the band, we were trying to make this record what it is,” said Young. “It’s something find a name,” said Funk. “There was a guy that I went to we’re all really proud of.” college with, [Judd Hoos], and we thought he had a cool name, so I called him and asked if we could use it. Pretty Hornick said that he sees how the band’s background as soon it became a unique-sounding, recognizable name.” a cover band has influenced what sort of sound they like to have in their original work.

“We’re blessed that we have [Young], who’s got some definite engineering skills, as far as recording,” said Hornick.

“Every night [in Sturgis] is so high-energy, and people are there to party,” said Tyler. “You kind of feed off of their energy. I haven’t had a show in Sturgis that wasn’t great, and I’m sure it’s going to be just as much fun this year.” MUSIC IN THE DARK IS NOW AVAILABLE ON ITUNES. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT JUDDHOOS.COM.

C U LT U R E + E N T E R TA I N M E N T motorcycles have been part of my lifestyle since I was a kid. “FOR ME, TO TAKE 500600 HOURS TO MAKE A PAINTING, WHATEVER IMAGE I’M WORKING ON HAS TO BE SOMETHING THAT I’M TRULY IN LOVE WITH, BECAUSE THAT’S A BIG JOURNEY TO TAKE.”

HOW DID YOU GET A LICENSE THROUGH HARLEY-DAVIDSON? WHAT MADE THEM DECIDE TO ALLOW YOU THE RIGHTS TO USE THEIR NAME IN YOUR ARTWORK? SJ: I was doing a lot of celebrity portraits back in the '80s, beginning of the '90s, and I was getting bored with that. A friend of mine, Ron Copple, said, “You know, motorcycles are super hot, and you love Harleys. You ever think about painting a Harley?” I said, “Motorcycles would be more difficult, but I’ll give it a shot.” I did two motorcycle pieces - one called Fat Boy and one called Live to Ride. I brought them to an art expo. I had a sign underneath these two prints that read "New releases" - meaning I was going to do limited edition prints of these and bring them out. There was this licensing company that worked out of Harley-Davidson called the Beanstalk Group, based out of New York City, and they were at the show just looking around. They came over to me and said, “What are you doing? You need a license to reproduce our name.”

So, I went to another art expo in Los Angeles, and the freakin’ Beanstalk Group was there again! They came up to me, and Jeff Bluestein, who was the president of Harley-Davidson at that time, happened to be there, too. They came over to the booth, and Bluestein said, “So this is the guy you were talking about?” He goes, “I love t’s no secret that South Dakota loves motorcycles, and his work, let’s see what we can do.” no one quite captures that love like artist Scott Jacobs, who was the first-ever licensed Harley-David- Ninety days later, I became the first son artist in 1993. “WRITING MUSIC IS A WAY FOR ME TO LET GO OF HURT OR PAINFUL EXPERIENCES AND NOT BE HELD CAPTIVE BY MY THOUGHTS. IT'S ALSO TO EXPRESS HOW I FEEL ABOUT THE GOOD TIMES THROUGH THE JOY I HAVE IN LIFE.”

MEET THE Artist BARRETT HEMMINGS TYPE OF ARTIST: SINGER-SONGWRITER RAPID CITY SINGER-SONGWRITER BARRETT HEMMINGS SINGS FROM THE HEART, AND HIS NEWEST SINGLE, 1984, IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF THAT. PREPARING TO RELEASE HIS SINGLE THIS MONTH TO TEASE HIS UPCOMING FULL-LENGTH ALBUM, HEMMINGS LOOKS FORWARD TO DEBUTING IT AT HIS PERFORMANCES AT THE CENTRAL STATES FAIR AUGUST 18 AND 25. PEOPLE HAVE COMPARED MY MUSIC TO… Jack Johnson and Ed Sheeran. I WRITE ABOUT PEROSNAL TOPICS BECAUSE… it is how I process certain life events, the good and the bad. I put my feelings from life situations into songs, in hopes that others can relate, and it will encourage them to find the words to express how they are feeling. I have had to grow up early in life and have seen more in my 30+ years than most have seen in a lifetime. My music is a result of those experiences, and I have poured both my heart and tears into creating these songs. ONE OF THE MOST PERSONAL SONGS I WROTE WAS… called Fight for You. Early on in my marriage, I recognized how selfish I was being as a husband, and how the dumb things I said or did had such a negative impact on my wife. After experiencing my family go through a series of divorces, I knew that I needed to make a change and work on those things in order to keep my marriage healthy and strong. My favorite lyric in it is, “I will always be by your side, because I know you will never leave mine.” I feel that it is really important for us to break the pattern of divorce within my family, because I know how much pain it can cause those it affects. THIS NEW SINGLE IS ABOUT… the life events that happened within my first year of life (1984), that I vaguely remember – things like my first breath and my first steps. My hope in this song is that it takes people back in time to a place that was simple and carefree for me, when my parents paid for everything, and the only thing I had to worry about was when my favorite cartoon came on TV. The song progresses quickly through my life, and ends with how I processed my parents’ divorce later in life. I was 23 when they decided to end their marriage, and it was one of the most difficult things I have gone through. The song ends with the idea that now my childhood feels like a dream, not the reality it was. MUSIC TO ME IS… one of the many art forms that can transcend any language barrier. Even without words, music can take people on a journey that navigates a wide spectrum of feeling and emotion. THE INSPIRATION FOR MY WORK IS… my wife, Allison. Most of the songs I’ve written are about how she makes me feel when I’m around her, and how no matter what comes our way, I will love her until my final breath. MY MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE AS A MUSICIAN WAS WHEN… I learned how to play the guitar. I remember the first time that I sang and played the guitar in front of people. It was horrible… But I kept practicing and getting better, and now I couldn’t imagine playing music without it.

1 8 \\\\\\\\\ A U G U S T

THE BIGGEST OBSTACLE I’VE FACED SO FAR IN MY CAREER WAS… recording/finishing my first album. I’ve written a lot of songs over the years, but didn’t really find my niche in writing until about five years ago. My biggest challenge in this has been that I felt that I needed to write what people wanted to hear instead of just being myself and writing what comes from my heart. THE BEST PART ABOUT PLAYING LIVE IS… watching people connect with the words that I’m singing. Whether it is something that they have personally gone through or can relate to, I can always tell when I’ve “struck a chord” with someone by how they look at me and connect for that moment. ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY LIVE IS… Tally’s Silver Spoon. Their staff there is always really accommodating, and it’s been fun getting to know some of them each time I play there. The food is out of this world, and the overall experience there for playing live music and listening to live music is always enjoyable. THE BEST EXPERIENCE/MOMENT I’VE HAD AS A MUSICIAN IS… making the Texas All-State Men’s Choir as a Tenor 1 my senior year of high school. I worked really hard my last few years of high school to accomplish this, and it was one of the most rewarding music experiences I have had. ANOTHER LOCAL MUSICIAN I LOVE IS… Joel Guptill. I get to work with Joel on a daily basis, and get to see how passionate he is about music. He has an incredible gift for songwriting and playing guitar. I’VE DABBLED IN OTHER ART FORMS, SUCH AS… drawing and woodworking. I am working on illustrating a kid’s book series about our dogs, Jones and Mae, and have built a few things around our house out of reclaimed wood. I LOVE GRABBING A BITE AT... Independent Ale House. Their pizzas are by far my favorite here in Rapid. IF I’M NOT CREATING MUSIC, I’M… binge watching shows on Netflix. ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLACES IN SOUTH DAKOTA IS… Mount Rushmore. I know it sounds super touristy, but I am so captivated by those old dudes’ heads and what it took to craft and sculpt them out of the rock. I remember visiting [the Black Hills] as a kid on a family RV trip and having the same feeling I have when I go look at it today. ONE THING YOU CAN EXPECT TO SEE FROM ME IN THE FUTURE IS… a fulllength album that will take you through my life from when I was a kid, up until now. My goal is to finish it by the end of this year and have it available by early 2018. HEMMINGS' SINGLE, 1984, IS AVAILABLE ON ITUNES AND SPOTIFY STARTING AUGUST 4. HIS AUGUST 18 AND 25 PERFORMANCES AT THE CENTRAL STATES FAIR BEGIN AT 5 P.M. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT BARRETTHEMMINGS.COM.

FOR GIFTS O WATERTOWN CONFECTIONERY

If you’re craving something sweet, or need a cake for a special occasion, Cake Crazy is a great stop. The custom cake and gourmet cupcake shop is owned by Jess Revalee, who just celebrated five years in business this spring. A selection of cupcakes are available daily. “I do whatever I feel like making, to be honest," said Revalee. “I keep bestsellers in there at all times and then mix it up.” Flavors include Banana Chocolate Chip, Better Than Sex, Peanut Buttercup, Lemon Blueberry, German Chocolate, Carrot Cake, Raspberry Swirl, Maple Bacon, and more. Revalee loves to play with cake design and is up for any event. "I do weddings, birthdays, from small to big,” she said. Get Cake Crazy Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Owners Mike and Vickie Marotz started Watertown Confectionery with chocolate, and it has since grown into selling fresh-roasted coffee and wine. “We do our own roasting and flavoring,” said Mike. Step over to the wine tasting room to try South Dakota Ghost Town Winery, and read about the featured ghost towns with clippings on the tasting counter (including Annie Creek and Flatiron). Don’t miss the large picture window between the showroom and kitchen, where you can watch the art of hand-dipping chocolates and pouring of hot, fresh caramel into pans. Even better? You can make your own wine and create a custom label in the basement. Wine making is by appointment only. They provide the wine cellar, wine kit, wine bottles, design labels, and bottle the wine for you. It makes for a fun group activity or to create a personal gift. The "one-stop for your indulgent side" is open Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m. 6 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

You’re in the right place. Owners Mike and Kayleigh Lawrence opened Harry’s Hair Cuts & Hot Towels in 2016 with the main goal to open a modern barbershop (they cut women’s hair, as well). After purchasing the downtown building, though, they realized a large portion of the space was prepped to be a restaurant. Making it the “best waiting room,” there are 36 tap beers and an eclectic menu. Chef Shawn Lindsey creates “enhanced bar food and area themes,” with items like Louisiana Cajun Alfredo Nachos and the award-winning 3 Little Pigs Burger. Check their Facebook for the extreme Burger of the Week (BOTW) (i.e. Chili Cheese Quesadilla Burger and donut buns). Bonus: Receive a free beer with your Thursday haircut. The 52,000-square-foot brick building was purchased as a “thank you” from Redlin to Watertown for giving him a state-sponsored scholarship for students with disabilities (he lost a leg in a motorcycle accident at the age of 15). "The art center was never meant to be a monument to himself; it was meant to be a gift back to his hometown," said executive director Julie Ranum. Redlin asked that admission always be free and that the Center remains open year round. Home to over 160 original paintings, and each painting tells a story that marks a specific time in his life and career, including his childhood (the oldest piece is a Bugs Bunny drawing he made at age 6). Help them celebrate their 20th anniversary by checking out the gift shop for a keepsake, “step into a painting” with the rustic log cabin replica, or visit the theater to watch videos on Redlin. HETHER IT’S AROUND A VINTAGE COFFEE TABLE, A FUNKY LAMP, OR A FAVORITE PIECE OF ARTWORK, A NEW SIOUX FALLS BUSINESS WANTS TO GET YOUR GUESTS TALKING ABOUT YOUR HOME’S SENSE OF STYLE. Mother Patience Pickner and daughter Chelsea Tracy have joined forces to become a small business powerhouse downtown at Conversation Piece. They’re no strangers to the task – Tracy launched Chelsea’s Boutique nearly nine years ago, and Pickner celebrated 20 years with Picket Fence Floral in Chamberlain this past spring. They say the new home décor store on Minnesota Avenue and 11th Street combines each of their areas of expertise.

“I’ve been doing home décor for 20 years, and it’s fun for me to find unusual items, very eclectic items,” said Pickner. “Home décor is everywhere, but what you really want to find for your space is something unique and different that starts a conversation.” Tracy and Pickner say inspiring customers also goes beyond just finding products. They say part of what makes Conversation Piece unique is their attention to the store’s layout – taking products off of shelves and displaying them in a way that helps customers go further. “We’re helping customers picture [products] in their own home through store design,” said Tracy. “You can see ‘yes I love that’ and this is how you would style it in your home. I think that’s really unique about us.” They also plan to continue providing consultations to customers looking to redecorate and will host various workshops and seminars this fall. And, as they’re guiding customers, they’re learning from each other, too.

2 2 \\\\\\\\\ A U G U S T

“I love her style and what she brings to the business, and I’m guessing vice versa,” said Pickner about partnering with her daughter. “Especially when you’ve been in business a long time, you can kind of get stuck… but it helps you step outside the box.” Tracy agrees. She says her mom’s years of home décor history and her own experience in marketing and management combine into a partnership that carries two valuable perspectives, drawing in a variety of customers. Tracy says they nearly doubled their goal on opening weekend in June, and have attracted visitors looking to spruce up everything from offices to dorm rooms to retirement homes, with a variety of price points to match. “I think that’s why we’re pulling in such a wide range: because we have two people with a wide age-range buying, so we’re really keeping that in mind,” she explained. “I’m buying stuff that 20-30-year-olds are going to like… something that’s a little more modern… and she’s buying the 40-year-old look that’s a little more traditional. And it’s worked out well in that way.” When I asked how they each manage several businesses and their own families, Tracy says an effective scheduling system is important if you don’t want to feel overwhelmed. Both cite reliable staff at each business as essential to being able to step away and focus on other ventures when necessary. But while finding time for projects across the Sioux Empire, they agreed that one of the major challenges has been pacing themselves as Conversation Piece grows in these early weeks. “We have to remember to slow down, take this one step at a time. Sometimes it’s been a challenge to just put the brakes on and focus on just this part when we want to expand already,” said Pickner. “We don’t sit still easily.” FOR MORE INFORMATION AND A FULL LIST OF HOURS AND SERVICES, VISIT CONVERSATIONPIECESF.COM.

AT HOME DAVID + TERRI FIELDS

"

It’s itty bitty,” laughed Terri Fields, who led us in to her 650-square-foot log cabin that she shares with husband David and 1-year-old daughter Lennon in Hill City.

The family, who moved into their new home in October, gave us a tour and shared their inspiring decision to downsize (and relax more) with their everyday lifestyle.

DAVID BUILT A MINI CABIN FOR DOGS FRANK AND BRIDGET.

2 4 \\\\\\\\\ A U G U S T

O THE CABIN When you first pull into the Fields’ driveway, the large deck gives you an impression. The couple walked outside and kindly waved to welcome us. As we walked through the front door, we were surprised at how small the space was.

ORIGINALLY HAVING CABINETS, THE FIELDS SWAPPED TO HAVE OPEN SHELVING IN THE KITCHEN.

HOME + LIVING

The cabin, we soon found out, represented so much more than just a house or shelter for a young family. Terri told us that she was formerly an environmental scientist, and that David had worn the hats of several business positions in the insurance and banking industries. “Nothing against those careers, I enjoyed them, but I didn’t want to sit at a desk for the rest of my life,” he explained.

“They brought a giant crane and lifted [the cabin] off the back of a truck, swung it through the trees, and set it on top of the basement,” laughed Terri. “I about had a heart attack – I was really scared.”

Terri felt high stress from her job, and when the opportunity arose for them to move to Hill City to be near family, they started looking for a new start. Now Terri is the production brewer and cellar associate at Prairie Berry Winery, and David is lead brewery associate at Miner Brewing Company.

The Fields had been living in a 13foot camper with their baby and two dogs for four months, and watched the entire process from the driveway. “People ask us, ‘How do you live in such a small space?’ We were living in a 13-foot camper, so [the cabin] is a mansion compared to that,” she said. “It was by choice, though. We have family here and both have jobs down in Hill City, and we thought we’d rather be here during construction.”

“Now we have a fun job,” she said with a smile. Once making hefty salaries, Terri said the change was highly worth it. “For me, working 50-60 hours a week in exchange for what we do now is a no-brainer,” she continued, “but you can’t have that high salary lifestyle with a different job.” That’s when they found the cabin online through Rosebud Log Homes in Mission. “We had looked at [the cabin] about a year-and-a-half or two years ago by now, and weren’t real sure what we were doing yet on this property; if we were going to build from the ground up or not,” said Terri. “Eventually we came back around and looked at this cabin.” In order to bring it to the land, they had to carry it with a crane and drop it onto foundation where they had a contractor build a basement for them.

“LAST YEAR WE MOVED, HAD A BABY, AND GOT NEW JOBS. AND WE’RE STILL MARRIED!”

It wasn’t just as simple as setting down the home, though. The couple had to build a separate set of stairs to lead to the basement, remodeled the bathroom (including swapping a standing shower to a bathtub for the baby), and added their own personal touches. One interesting element to the cabin is that it’s built with beetle wood trees. “This is unique, because there’s only a finite amount of pine beetle wood left,” said Terri. “At some point, it will all be gone and used up. That’s the unique coloring you see in the wood.”

HOME + LIVING

“SOMETIMES IT ALMOST FEELS LIKE WE’RE IN A TREE HOUSE.”

O DOWNSIZING With the change in careers, the family had made a commitment to a different lifestyle. “Even though we knew we were going to start a family, we wanted to really minimize as much as possible,” said Terri. David had always wanted to live in a cabin and knew this could be a great move for them. “I’ve always wanted a log cabin, so when we found this it felt right,” he said. “Our last house before this was 1,800 square feet, and the last one before that was 2,200 [square feet], and we always had all of this extra space that we never used. A smaller log home made sense.” In order to make the move, they needed to edit down their belongings. “It was cool going from our old house to this one because we really had to go through our stuff,” explained David. “What did we need and what did we have room for?”

The biggest problems? Clothes and kitchen items. “You accumulate so much over the years,” said Terri. “We had three toasters at one point. We made a lot of donations.” David says they allotted one storage tub to each of them and let them keep “non-useful things,” like old, nostalgic t-shirts. Currently, their furniture is all from previous homes and from family members, including the kitchen table that was given to them by Terri’s grandma. “Our [table] is the central gathering place and is literally central in our house,” she said. “Lennon eats three meals a day there." Some parts of the furniture didn’t make the cut, though. “There used to be another piece for the couch, but we didn’t have room for it,” laughed Terri. They have plans to shop around more after Lennon gets older.

O TWO SPACES As of right now, the cabin has what the Fields describe as “two spaces.” When the basement is complete, they’ll have another living area and bathroom, but for now they have the open main floor with the kitchen, full bathroom, and Lennon’s room, and the upstairs. Their way to get up to the master bedroom is the half stair, half ladder combination. “I’m so used to it, I don’t even notice anymore,” said David as we walked upstairs. We were warned to watch our heads with the lower ceiling, and saw the bed near the ground, raised up by wooden palettes. “Since [the bedroom] has such a short ceiling, we snagged the palettes from work (with permission) and continued with that for the side tables,” said Terri. They also pointed out all of the framed photographs from a trip they’ll never forget. David recalled, “When we finished college, we took my Jeep from Rapid City to San Francisco all the way up the coast and up to Alaska, and these are photos from that.” Past the bedroom is the walk-in closet. “It’s actually the biggest closet we’ve had in all of our houses, oddly enough,” laughed David. The only catch is that the upstairs half bathroom is in the closet. Does this phase the couple? “It’s just part of it, you know,” said Terri.

TERRI AND DAVID HAVE A DISPLAY FOR BELOVED PETS OF THE PAST.

2 6 \\\\\\\\\ A U G U S T

Since they had to bring in plumbing, the pipes are exposed, and the couple plans to use their creativity to cover them. Windows are also in the closet looking over the land and into the trees. “You don’t realize how high up you are until you look out here,” said Terri. “It’s a small house, you know, but we really have two separate spaces with being able to close the door up here.”

O LENNON’S ROOM Nearing the end of our tour, we had the chance to help wake up Lennon after her nap. The changing table and crib were gifts from David’s sister. “The two girls are 10 and 12 now, and they saved them for us specifically and gave them to us three years ago, trying to get us to have a baby,” laughed Terri. In the corner is a dried lilac bush from their old neighbor, which has made it into three different houses now. “I watched him cut that down, and I asked if I could have a piece of that,” she said. The painting above the crib was done by Terri, who made it for Lennon while she was pregnant. The closet is a “catch-all closet” for kitchen supplies, utilities, and, of course, Lennon’s things. “You don’t need a big space to make a baby happy, that’s for sure,” said Terri with a smile.

“I ACTUALLY AM NOT ON PINTEREST; I LOVE MAGAZINES. EVERY HOME DÉCOR OR GARDENING MAGAZINE IS MY FAVORITE. THAT’S HOW I’VE ALWAYS PUT THINGS TOGETHER.”

O EXITING THE HOME, IT WAS INSPIRING TO SEE HOW EASY LIFE CAN BE. TERRI SAID SOMETHING IN THE BABY’S ROOM THAT BOOKENDED THE ENTIRE VISIT: “MY HUSBAND AND I LOVE THIS QUOTE, THAT ‘WHEN YOU HAVE ENOUGH, YOU DON’T NEED MORE. FREQUENT HOME BUYING QUESTIONS ANSWERED THINKING ABOUT PURCHASING A HOME, BUT UNSURE OF WHERE TO START? BANK MIDWEST MORTGAGE LOAN ORIGINATOR SARAH WILSON ANSWERS COMMON QUESTIONS THAT ARISE IN THE HOME BUYING PROCESS TO EASE SOME OF THOSE WORRIES.

ESSENTIAL FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYER FACTS FROM MGIC.COM (FROM 2016)

TIP: MAINTAIN STEADY EMPLOYMENT THAT CAN BE VERIFIED.

WHAT PROGRAMS ARE AVAILABLE FOR FIRST TIME HOMEBUYERS AND BEYOND? There are a number of programs available to purchase your home. If you meet income guidelines, you may qualify for extra benefits through the South Dakota Housing and Development Authority (SDHDA). Some of those programs include Conventional, VA, and Rural Development. When you choose a lender, make sure you know you have options. If you're over the income guidelines, there are several other programs for you, including Conventional, Home Ready, Home Possible, and VA. WHAT IF I'M UNSURE I CAN AFFORD PURCHASING A HOUSE BECAUSE OF CREDIT, A DOWN PAYMENT, SAVINGS, ETC.?

If you don’t know, just ask. When you speak with a mortgage professional, they will let you know what they're able to do for you. If there is something holding you back, such as credit or a down payment, they will coach you through options to help you get on the home buying track. WHAT IF I CAN'T AFFORD A REAL ESTATE AGENT TO TAKE ME AROUND? When you are a buyer, your real estate agent generally works for you at no cost to you. They get paid if you buy a home (generally by the seller of the home) as part of a listing agreement. Just like finding a trusted lender, it is okay, even advised, to shop around for realtors you feel meet your needs. WHAT IF I CAN'T AFFORD A HUGE DOWN PAYMENT. AM I HOPELESS?

3 0 \\\\\\\\\ A U G U S T

Absolutely not! There are financing options that require no or little down payment, as well as down payment assistant programs that are out there to help. We’re lucky to live in South Dakota, which has a few different programs like SDHDA and South Dakota Grow that help home buyers with down payment and/or closing costs. Your lender will be able to let you know what programs you can qualify for. WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST I SHOULD SAVE BEFORE I START LOOKING FOR A HOUSE? While it is not a requirement of every loan, it is a good idea to have a cushion in your savings account. Even if you are using a no down payment program, when you go from renting to home ownership, issues that were previously a landlord's issue now become yours. For example, a furnace going out

74% rented before buying.

24% used a GIFT as a source of down payment.

35% of all homebuyers are buying their first home.

Of all first-time homebuyers, 58% are married couples, 18% are single females, 14% are unmarried couples, and 8% are single males.

21% lived with parents, relatives, or friends before buying.

right before winter. Another reason to save is if you are limited on credit or have had credit challenges in the past. Having a couple months of house payments and bills saved can help you get approved for financing. WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN PEOPLE SAY "DON'T FALL FOR GIMMICKS"? If someone is willing to give you something in return for financing with them, you could be paying for it in the long run. Shop around and find a lender you trust who will explain all of the fees and exactly what you are paying for your mortgage. Not all mortgage companies have the same fee and rate philosophy, which makes it important to shop around. Once you have a completed application, a lender you apply with is required to issue a loan estimate to you within three

business days. This document is a great tool for shopping and comparing two companies. HOW CAN I START GETTING ON THE ROAD TO GOOD CREDIT? Credit is scary, but everything from your interest rate on various loans to the rate you pay for insurance can depend on your credit score and how you handle your credit. If you are new to credit, start small. The key to credit cards is to keep your balance low relative to your limit. Make every payment on time and keep it active. If you are trying to rebuild credit or have any questions, start with talking to a lender or pulling your own report on annualcreditreport.com. Soren, who has a two-year contract teaching second grade in Colombia, entrusts his parents, who live next door, to oversee the booking communication, answer questions for guests, and help clean after check out (this Airbnb has self check in, and the key is left in a hidden area). “I’m more in charge of cleaning, and really there’s not much you have to do," said his mother, Brooke. Winter months are quiet, but starting around April, the home is frequently booked. As we approached the front door, Scott pointed up to the flat roof and talked about the modern and "green" design. “The roofline is vastly different, and that’s probably one of the things that attracts people,” said Scott. “When it rains, we collect rainwater and can use the water for gardening or whatever. That’s the reason for the design, or the way it is.” We were told Soren would be chatting with us via FaceTime sometime during the walkthrough on his break. “You’ve got to talk to him about the house since this is his passion project,” said Brooke. To give a little more background before continuing further, it’s important to

There were even pronghorns on the hill to meet us as we pulled into the neighborhood! Thank you, Soren, for sharing this treasure with us! Your map of the area trails was icing on the cake. I wish we had more time to stay and explore!" - Jeff, June 2017 "This bungalow was the most unique, smart, and beautiful place I've ever visited. We could have stayed much longer. Scott and Brooke were so sweet and helpful to us. Soren also gave us lots of information and was very communicative and friendly. These are the type of people and a place you'll remember for a long time. I will recommend this trip and the bungalow to many. Special place." -Sharon, June 2017

The Airbnb Community 65,000+ cities 160,000,000+ guests 1,400+ castles 191+ countries 3,000,000+ listings worldwide explain that there are three ways to host your home. You can rent your entire home, rent a private room in your home, or rent a shared room. Soren’s “cleverly designed studio” (as described on his listing) is a full home for $157 a night ($217 a night on weekends). The 700-square-foot studio has a main room, full bathroom, and a utility room. As we entered, it was like an artist’s paradise, with art scattered about the walls, lush plants covering surfaces throughout, and a 108-square-foot glass garage door. “With the design this way and this facing south, in the wintertime the sun is so much lower in the sky that the sun shines [through the garage door] and heats up this space and the floor,” explained Scott. “All of this floor can retain that heat.” To give us the full effect, Brooke opened the garage door, which leads to the outdoor lounge area. “It becomes an instant patio," she exclaimed. “Presto, instant porch! You have a little fire pit out there; it’s a great space.” Scott continued about the inspira-

tion behind it, “I guess originally he wanted to build a house over here, too, so this was his way of existing without getting in debt. This really might end up being a garage eventually, if he does end up doing all that.” When asked if he will return to finish the envisioned project, Brooke replied, “We sure hope so, but he loves other cultures and adventures.” Soren is also an artist, and all of the paintings, drawings, and prints throughout the space are his works. He even painted a forest mural in the bathroom, which he built out with his dad.

While there is one Murphy Bed "For two acres of land and an entire (which has instructions on how home for $157 a night, it’s ecoto pull out of the wall), the bun- nomical for a family to be here, and galow accommodates four guests they have space," said Scott. “He’s obsessed with anything artistic,” said Brooke. We were told there were 95 plants in the studio last year, but they have “downsized a bit.” Why the love for plant life? “We can take credit for that one,” said Scott. “There are plants all over my house, as well. I was a biology teacher.” The main space acts as what they described as four rooms in one. There is the bedroom, kitchen, living room, and dining room.

In order to do this, he urges to not sign up for Instant Book. Airbnb recommends it for constant booking and to make more money, but Soren says this makes it harder to be in control of who your guests are. As his break came to a close, we said our goodbyes. Soon after, Scott's phone lit up, and it was another booking. “This is how we stay abreast when we’re out and about. Requests and messages come straight to my phone. We were in Kentucky, and I accepted a booking from there," he said.

“Another unique thing is this whole floor is heated – there are tubes that run through here from the utility room.” — Scott

The couple walked us out into the field and talked about the guests who have come and gone. “The girl who left this morning actually left a really neat note. She’s a traveling nurse, and she’s moving across the country. She was questioning her decision, so we talked about it," said Brooke. "You get to know people’s stories. When people sign up for [our Airbnb] they tell us a little bit about themselves and why they’re traveling.” Scott motioned towards the patio.

37

“I think one of the things that brings us both joy is when we see people over here in the evening with the garage door up and guests relaxing in the chairs or playing wiffle ball," he said. "Just seeing people using the space the way Soren designed and why he enjoys it is why we love doing this."

Charming Phillips Avenue Craftsman Andrew Wieting, an investment broker, and his wife Lisa, a pharmacy technician, had been guests through Airbnb in cities like San Francisco and Chicago. "It just seemed like something we would enjoy doing," said Andrew. They started hosting a year ago this month, and have been living in their 1919 craftsman for two years. Andrew recalled, “This house was a little rough when we bought it, so I’ve done a lot of work to it.” The Wieting's historic home on

////////// Phillips Avenue is just a few blocks from both downtown Sioux Falls and McKennan Park. There are two listings for their space: One is for the front bedroom on the main floor, and the other is for the two remaining bedrooms by the kitchen (you can stay in all three by booking both listings). Andrew said in the wintertime when it's slower, the front room is $35 a night and the two rooms are $45 a night. During busy season, the prices are bumped up to $45 for the front room and $55 for the two rooms. “We could charge more, but I think

it’s better having it full all of the time and meeting people," he said. Since you're renting a private room(s), Andrew and Lisa are typically in the home with you, but stay in the basement where they have a TV room and their master bedroom. “We basically have a live-in unit downstairs, so it works out pretty good,” said Andrew. Their dog, Lux, can also be found down there.

The Wietings put together a welcome letter with house rules and Wi-Fi information, as well as a list of local shops, attractions, and restaurants to check out. They learned these types of touches from their experiences as guests. Andrew says being an Airbnb host has been a great opportunity to make extra money. "We've had months where we bring in more than $2,000," he said. The flexibility has been nice as well, as hosts can set their calendar for when they want to allow guests or not (again, not part of Instant Book). Andrew enjoys being able to be as busy as they want to be.

Guests have the entire main floor, including the kitchen that has a "coffee and espresso nook," and the living room with a TV and the latest magazines. Toiletries are available in the bathroom, as well. “You can block dates and have dates open and available as much as you want. The entrance was welcoming right away, with much more picnic table seating on the patio. As we opened the door, Taylor and Putzke were right there to greet us. We were obsessed with the subway tile (you can never go wrong with subway tile) and the wooden bar. Putzke explained the bar, the custom shelves, and the cleaver (shaped like South Dakota) were created by Hackberry Hollow Woodworks out of Renner.

Along with hearing they had delicious food, we learned of the owners' longtime bromance. Our choices? Strawberry and chocolate mint. Mint is my jam, so chocolate mint it was. The mint-infused dessert was to die for. Since we started with dessert first (like everyone should), we moved on to the Naughty Fries. They are fries topped with pork chile verde, taqueria pickles, queso fresco, cilantro, and radish. For being "naughty," it didn't feel wrong. Everything looked so fresh. I will probably say "fresh" 80 times in this article, because it just needs to be repeated. The fries weren't overwhelmed with toppings, and they were easy to eat. Because of this, the fries were crispy, not soggy. I was happily surprised by the radish, which I wouldn't normally think to pair with fries. To wash down the "naughty" starter, my co-worker enjoyed a glass of Ballast Point Sculpin, and I tried a glass of Elysian Brewing Blood Orange Pale Super Fuzz. The restaurant has eight craft beers on tap. Next up, the Falafel. This being my first falafel, it had chaat spiced raita, cherry tomato, Dagger and Arrow hot sauce, romaine, and pita. The tomatoes were the most red I’ve seen all summer. Since

HOMEMADE ICE CREAM

I had never eaten it before, I probably failed at eating it correctly and used silverware. It was very flavorful, and the deep, fried balls were packed with new flavors for me. The Vietnamese Fried Chicken ended up on our table, and is a "must-try" at Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen. The nuoc cham, bahn mi pickles, cilantro aioli, and potato roll were juicy and packed with different tastes. The pickled vegetables were a cool addition, though the carrot was sneakily spicy. When we thought we were going to roll down into the street from being bloated, we received the Porkstrami – pork belly, beer braised kraut, fontina, grainaise, on rye. These types of sandwiches typically scare me, but I needed to try this one. It was tame on flavor and had the perfect amount of [house-made] sour krout. They cure their bacon in house, which makes bacon even better.

Yes, there's one more. We tried the Moroccan Chicken salad. This included arugula, grapes, feta, harissa marinated cucumber, crispy lentils, and preserved lemon vinaigrette. The taste of honey garlic and in-house vinaigrette were a light treat. I would actually order this, and if you ask on a normal day if I'll choose salad over anything else, the answer is no.

O BOTTOM LINE: This is a great stop for fresh (I said it again), farm-to-table small plates (which most come with a side of chips). You'll leave extremely satisfied and ready to come back for the next round. It's also very exciting to see the patio utilized more, since it's such a new, fun area of town.

It feels like you're walking into a modern deli, which I saw they do have house-made deli meats and sausages to order. The patio is a great way to spend a nice lunch or dinner hour. There's a lot of neighborhood traffic of people walking with their family or dog(s). It's great for people watching.

This is almost a steal for what you're getting with ingredients. Everything is $12 or under, which makes it easy to order several small plates to try more items.

I can't talk enough about the taste. Their presentation made me want to try things I never want to try. And I loved it. Along with their locally-sourced products, they have kid-friendly options as well. Don't miss the Naughty Fries and ice cream of the day.

8TH AVENUE BAKERY

B

Owner Aaron Neiman chose to open his shops in Belle Fourche because of his history in the area. His grandpa used to take him to Hank’s Barbour Shop as a kid, and nine years ago that same building went up for sale. He bought the space and opened his first coffee shop, called Green Bean Coffeehouse. “Our house at the time in Belle [Fourche] had a separate walk-

out basement apartment that we converted into a certified kitchen called The Bakeshop,” said Neiman. “This became our in-house bakery for providing all the shops with scratch made baked goods.” Soon after, 704 8th Avenue went up for sale, and he knew it would be the perfect place to expand his bakery. The building was originally a medical clinic and then a law office, so they had to do a complete renovation in order to transform it into the kitchen it is today. “It’s unique in that its primary function is to supply our own coffee shops with fresh baked goods,” said Neiman. “We are also one of the last remaining bakeries to make both cake and raised donuts completely from scratch.” The popular bakery is only open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. They plan to open up to the public more in the future, but for right now they spend

the majority of their time baking goods for Neiman's coffee shops throughout the Black Hills. Another goal Neiman has for his bakery is to reintroduce his line of breads that originally got the ball rolling, along with adding custom cakes. Neiman says the 8th Avenue Bakery crew is full of fun, dedicated, and hard-working people who have a passion for frying donuts throughout the night. Neiman said his team has the support structure necessary to keep the bakery as great as it is. Head baker and manager Blaine Wall didn’t have a baking background, but moved his way up because of his desire to learn and create amazing goodies. The bakery regularly includes new items to the menu that are hand-made by the staff. They also have seasonal items for holidays throughout the year; for example, on the 4th of July they offered Independence Day Pies.

“This will be the first year we try to incorporate a variety of berries foraged locally,” said Neiman. “Berry picking has long been a family tradition and yields such prized commodities as chokecherry syrup or service berry pie.”

“BELLE FOURCHE WAS WHERE IT ALL STARTED FOR US NINE YEARS AGO. AS A KID, MY GRANDPA WOULD TAKE ME TO BELLE TO GET MY HAIRCUT AT HANK'S BARBOUR SHOP. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT 30+ YEARS LATER THE SAME SPACE WOULD HOUSE OUR FIRST COFFEE SHOP?”

Neiman said his personal favorite on the menu is the Boston Creams. This is a round donut with a hollow center filled with Boston cream made from scratch instead of vanilla pudding. All baked goods from the bakery can be found at any of Neiman's shops: Green Bean Coffeehouse in Belle Fourche and Spearfish, Blackbird Espresso in Spearfish, and Harriet & Oak in Rapid City. LIFESTYLE

5 8 \\\\\\\\\ A U G U S T

Perhaps it is the all-too-often sleep deprivation that comes with parenting, or maybe it is the fact that my brain can only process a maximum of 100 repetitions of Wheels on the Bus or Goodnight Moon at a time with little space for anything else. Or, maybe simply, the neverending act of keeping everyone alive, fed, and emotionally secure is taking up all of my mental power. Whatever the case, I’ve been feeling a little less like I’m cooking with gas lately, and more like I’m cooking over a low – albeit steady – burning flame in the intellectual department.

CHILDLIKE BEHAVIOR BY TRACY KIRBY CRISTA BALLARD PHOTOGRAPHY On some rudimentary level, I always thought parenting, among other things, would bring me to some sort of elevated level of – I don’t know – maturity, maybe? Wisdom? Intellect? The sacred act of bringing life into the world, cherishing and nurturing said life, and

then releasing them into the world to flourish and thrive – I thought all of that would somehow enact some type of heightened mental prowess in some way, shape, or form. But, in recent months, I’ve been really wondering... is it possible that I’ve actually be-

come less intelligent? Have some of my brain cells gone to their fateful demise in the years since I’ve produced offspring? I humbly submit to you that, sadly, some of my behavior lately points to the affirmative to these questions.

About a month ago, we were having some photos taken with my children and my nieces in order to get some tangible cousin memories in print (and, as it turns out, to slowly torture our lovely photographer in the process). We got the kids all dressed up, set up some props in my in-laws fairy tale-like backyard, and prayed for the best. We brought cupcakes, balloons, and a tea set to adequately bribe the children to smile and look at the camera. While the pictures were being taken, I made a short video clip of the sights and sounds of the scene. When I later replayed it, I was mildly horrified about what I heard. What I heard was this: Some obviously wacko lady in the background talking in a very high-pitched ridiculous voice. She kept saying some singsongy gibberish whilst making jarringly weird sounds, along with a creepy, incessant command to, “Smile! Show me your teeth!” If I were those kids, and I heard that lady, I would most definitely be running for the distant Black Hills. And I would definitely not be showing her my teeth.

BUT, IN RECENT MONTHS, I’VE BEEN REALLY WONDERING... IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I’VE ACTUALLY BECOME LESS INTELLIGENT? HAVE SOME OF MY BRAIN CELLS GONE TO THEIR FATEFUL DEMISE IN THE YEARS SINCE I’VE PRODUCED OFFSPRING?

You know the really scary thing in all of this? It was me! I was that lady. I could hardly recognize my own voice, because I sounded like the fool of fools. What has happened to me? A smart person would not be making those sounds or talking in that octave. I quickly deleted the video. “No one else should ever be subjected to this lunacy,” I told myself as I pressed the red “delete” button. The next day at dinner, that wacko lady emerged again. I was trying to get my 2-year-old to eat his dinner, and apparently, for this purpose, wacko lady will go to any and all lengths to make it happen. Again, with the obnoxiously weird voice and the clown-like behavior. I felt myself have another out-of-body experience: Is this really me acting like this? No wonder I’m forgetting things on the regular, grasping for words mid-sentence, and feeling like my intellect is hanging on by a thread. What is this child-like level to which I have stooped? We recently got our pictures back from our cousin photo shoot. They turned out beautifully. The children are smiling, the lighting is magical, and we have pictures (and memories) that will last a lifetime. And my 2-year-old son’s dinner that one night? He ate it all. It was a success. Now, I’m not saying that I should continue to act like a maniac

for the sake of pictures or a dinner consumed, but it all has made me think in a larger sense: Is it so bad to stoop to a child-like level? Is it actually a positive thing that I feel a little less intelligent these days? Parenting really does take you back to the carefree attitude of childhood. It allows you to revert back to the simplest of times, where someone making funny faces and talking in a sing-songy voice makes you smile. It takes you back to when pretending broccoli is a Choo-Choo train makes it somehow more delicious. It takes you back to being delightfully unaware and impervious to what others may think of you; allowing you to forget your own personal pride and allow it to dissipate for the sake of someone else. In hindsight, I shouldn’t have deleted the video of “wacko lady” at the photo shoot. Yes, it was embarrassing and ridiculous, but who cares? It was a memory, and I made my kids smile and laugh. Maybe losing a bit of your knowledge of your own intelligence is actually real intelligence and maturity. And in that light, I’m willing to look like an absolute idiot for my children. Lucky for them, it appears to be happening a lot these days.

THE MANAGER OF LOT 2029 IN SIOUX FALLS GIVES US AN INSIDE LOOK AT HER FAVORITE SNACKS, HER LOVE AND FEAR OF WATER, AND HER STYLISH COLLECTION. Getting ready in the morning is my favorite, because I'm obsessed with hair and makeup. A random fact about me is that I went to beauty school at Stewart School in Sioux Falls. As a side passion, you can find me doing hair and makeup for events, for photo shoots, and for fun.

I collect [1] sunglasses. I have around 15 pairs. My current favorite pair are my purple cat-eye glasses, mainly because they're so vintage and fun! Along with collecting sunglasses, swimsuits are a hard next for me. Every summer I can't go without buying a couple new styles. We just started carrying swimsuits at [2] LOT 2029, which is awesome. They're amazing quality and are very unique! I've been loving one pieces, and the ones we carry in store are so stylish. I also love our off-the-shoulder two-piece. I love summer and being outside. I can never go wrong with a steak and margarita I love to [5] journal; it's my way of expressing myself, and it rejuvenates my soul. Whenever I have a minute to myself, I'll write about anything that's on my mind - from anything that happened that day to a trip I went on to inspirational quotes. [6] Cookie dough is my weakness. I try not to have it in my house so I don't get carried away and eat a whole tub in one sitting (because I've done this too many times to count). My favorite ice cream usually has cookie dough in it, and I love to pick out the chocolate chips. I like the taste of "chocolate chip cookie dough," but without the chocolate chips (yes it is different than sugar cookie dough).

SOULCRATE CELEBRATES 15 YEARS BY MORGAN MATZEN

IT HAS BEEN 15 YEARS SINCE BROTHERS DAN AND WES EISENHAUER FIRST SAT DOWN WITH COREY GERLACH AND STARTED COLLABORATING ON SONGS TOGETHER AS SOULCRATE MUSIC. THEIR FIRST RELEASE WAS 2002’S FROM THE NECK UP, AND SINCE THEN, THEY HAVE SCALED THE ITUNES CHARTS, GONE ON MULTIPLE TOURS FROM COAST TO COAST WITH ACTS LIKE PROF AND GRIEVES, AND SINGLEHANDEDLY OPENED THE DOOR FOR A RAP SCENE TO GROW IN SOUTH DAKOTA.

6 2 \\\\\\\\\ A U G U S T

“Fifteen years ago, there wasn’t anybody playing rap music in Sioux Falls,” said Wes. “We were born out of the punk rock scene, and grew up going to shows and skateboarding. We embraced that culture and put our own little spin on it.” Soulcrate found inspiration from the rap scenes in larger cities, and from groups like Rhymesayers

Entertainment, an independent hip hop record label in Minneapolis.

ing things. We took that back home and tried to figure it out some more.”

“We were seeing what was happening in other cities, saying to ourselves, ‘Why can’t this happen here?’” said Wes. “We were fans of music and still are. I traveled to Chicago a few times to see shows, I travel to Minneapolis all the time. It was very inspiring to see people who were like us, but do-

In essence, Soulcrate created something out of nothing. They started producing rap music when not many other people in Sioux Falls were. “It was a very exciting time in my life to do something and not really know what you’re doing, and to get a little bit of a

reaction from your community and see people coming out to shows,” said Wes. “It was an organic thing.” Starting out, they would host shows at the late Black Sheep Coffee, or house shows with crowds of 30-40 people. In 2007, Soulcrate went on their first tour with Grieves and Mac Lethal, playing 37 shows in 39 days. They continued to go on tours through

2012, from New York to Los Angeles and everywhere in between. “That was a big step for us. It was like we jumped another ring, getting out of our hometown and not just being local anymore,” said Wes. “Those are great memories. We were touring pretty hard. We have taken a step back and try to do a little more quality over quantity at this point.” After years of touring, Soulcrate started hosting That Sounds Decent concerts downtown. This year will be their fourth time hosting the free, all-ages event on August 26. “We always wanted our own little festival. To me, it’s about adding value to our community,” explained Wes. “I wanted to throw a show in downtown Sioux Falls that people would be happy to pay $20 to see, or even drive to another city, [but] I wanted it to be free.”

Prof, Soulcrate, Denham, Tuff Roots, and Elsa Rae will all be playing this year at 8th & Railroad. Fans can expect a different vibe this year, Wes said. “I’m trying to step it up and make it more of an experience,” he said. “I’m really trying to transform 8th & Railroad into a vibe. We’re doing a bit more on the production end. The hallmark of it, like no matter what it is, it has to be free.” Soulcrate has been a learning experience for Wes. He said he owes a lot to Soulcrate and the Sioux Falls scene when it comes to his photography skills and his company with Gerlach, The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co. “Running the Breaks or my photo or video business, it's all because of Soulcrate,” he said. AN OLD FRIEND OF MINE GOT ME A BIRTHDAY PRESENT. NOW THEIR BIRTHDAY IS COMING UP, BUT WE DON’T REALLY HAVE CONTACT ANYMORE. AM I OBLIGATED TO THEM A GIFT?

I BOOKED OUR FAMILY A VACATION TO THE BLACK HILLS, BUT MY DAUGHTER SAYS SHE WOULD RATHER GO ON A WEEKEND TRIP WITH HER FRIENDS. HOW DO I CONVINCE HER TO COME SPEND TIME WITH HER FAMILY?

JR: The last time I bought a friend a birthday gift (outside a shot at the bar), I was 12. Adult birthday gifts are always optional. So, unless your friend is 12 (which is strange), you're in the clear. JW: Yes, Mr. Scrooge. JT: It's completely up to you. My opinion? A silly inside joke along with a solid GIF on their Facebook timeline is the least you can do. You're grown-ass adults, though, so it's your decision.

JR: You explain to her that you too would rather be going on a vacation with your friends, but that isn’t an option. So she'd better get her fanny pack packed up and deal with it. JW: Guilt her. Tell her if she doesn't come with her family, she's not going to get money or birthday presents until her part of the Black Hills trip is paid back. Threaten grounding, or if she's too old for that, spread rumors to her friends that she's disloyal. Can you tell I'm going to be a great parent?

I HAVE BEEN ON A DIET FOR A WHILE NOW, AND MY GRANDMA BAKES ME A TON OF GOODIES EVERY TIME I VISIT. HOW DO I KEEP ON TRACK WITH MY DIET WITHOUT MAKING MY GRANDMA FEEL BAD?

JR: Do you want that $10 bill in your next birthday card? Choke down those Fig Newtons. JW: Dude, eat the sweets! You gotta keep Grandma happy. Plus, you know she's going to put, like, 10 sticks of butter in those cookies! JT: Unlike diet fads, grandmas do not come and go. Visit old grandma on cheat day and enjoy some baked goods. You won’t regret it.
