The last two-plus years of working with this team has brought me opportunities, taught me invaluable lessons, and given me a sense of belonging-

I’m a little obsessed with the growing foodie scene in Spearfish, so when I heard about Farmhouse Bistro & Bar opening, I was ecstatic. Unfortunately I didn’t get to go to the farm-to-table restaurant for the shoot, so I guess I’ll have to go soon to experience it for myself.

I don’t think it’s any surprise that the 605 team loves food. We can more often than not be found at Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen chowing down on some Naughty Fries, at Ramen Fuji enjoying a warm meal, or at Queen City Bakery for an afternoon cookie. With that being said, you can see why this issue is one of our favorites.

Our Meet the Creative this month is Cody Nesbitt from Sanford Health. I went to take some photos at his desk and he had many items from the Philadelphia Eagles. This automatically makes him a great person. Apparently his brother-in-law plays for the Birds, and now (without his knowledge) Cody and I are best friends.

In QUESO didn’t know, Mi Pueblo in Chamberlain has some of the best chimichangas in the state! The 605 team stopped by and we had a specTACOlar time. Now that I am done with the puns, I wanted to say to Kyle (the queen of puns) that being your desk buddy the past few years has brought so many fun memories that I will cherish forever.

» 1 cup heavy cream » A pinch of freshly chopped parsley » Season with salt & pepper to taste

Reduce down until cream looks like a thickened gravy. Mix in precooked pasta. Top & serve with shredded Asiago cheese.

According to owner and manager Lynn Short, the story Short behind Garden of Eat’n in Canton is not a very exciting one. “I just needed a job,” she simply stated as 605 sat with her on a late Thursday morning. “It was a church in the very beginning when it was built in 1889.”

Then, Short says, in the early ‘20s it was a gas station until the late ‘70s. It sat empty until 1982, when she saw the opportunity to open a restaurant in the location.

“It was a mess. A third of the f loor was dirt, a third of the f loor was concrete, and a third was wood,” recalled Short. Another problem? She entered the situation without a game plan. Should they lean into the gas station motif or the church? Short says fate took the wheel when country churches in the area were closing or moving and held auctions.

“It was like it was meant to be because we went and we bought church pews and church décor,” she said. Then they had to decide on a name. “We first thought of The Ten Condiments, but we weren’t sure if it would click well,” said Short. “Then one day we thought of the Garden of Eat’n, and then the apples just started happening. Everything was just kind of an accident.”

Along with sandwiches and soups, the lunchtime spot serves a few Mexican food items, malts, ice cream, and fresh-baked goods, like homemade pie. The pie, as you could guess, also came to be by happenstance. “I had an apple tree and I thought that I needed to get rid of all of the apples, so I started making pies,” said Short. “Then my apple tree fell down, but I was stuck because I’m pretty famous for my pie, so I had to keep making them.”

Along with the move, the menu would also be risky. Short says she wanted to serve deli style sandwiches, and in the ‘80s it was almost unheard of.

The seasonal business sees most year-round visitors from the courthouse, while the busiest time comes from those traveling on the highway and visitors to Newton Hills during the spring and summer months.

“You gotta remember this was a long time ago, there weren’t any Subways. I mean, they hadn’t even invented Diet Coke then,” she laughed. “We’ve been here 37 years. It’s hard to believe.”

Looking back on Garden of Eat’n’s story, Short said earnestly, “I did have a business plan... but as I look back it was a joke.”

One of the most popular sandwiches has been the Taco Sub. The other most popular item, the daily soup special, was shockingly a hard sell as well when the restaurant first opened.

“It used to be that I couldn’t sell soup to save my soul,” said Short. “It was a farm community who wanted meat, potatoes, vegetables, and dessert. We started out with just chili, and then I started gradually adding this and that, and it became a big thing where soups caught on.”

SIOUX FALLS NATIVES JON OPPOLD AND HIS WIFE, KATY, USED TO WALK THEIR FRENCH BULLDOG, SUNNY, IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD BETWEEN AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY AND THE UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS, AN AREA THEY LIVED IN FOR MANY YEARS. WHEN A FORMER LAUNDROMAT ON 26TH STREET AND MINNESOTA AVENUE BECAME VACANT, TURNING THE BUILDING INTO A NEIGHBORHOOD PIZZA JOINT WAS A NATURAL NEXT STEP FOR THE ENTREPRENEURIAL COUPLE.

“College students don’t always have a ton to do,” said Oppold. “We wanted to create a place for community here, where people could just come, hang out, and eat pizza.” Oppold quit his job in marketing to open the pizzeria late last year, but he didn’t leave creative strategy behind when he entered the restaurant business full-time. Instead Oppold took inspiration from those walks with Sunny as a way to brand his new business—naming it Sunny’s Pizzeria—and using memed images of the dog to create a following on social media. “It was just kind of a fun, quirky way to do things,” said Oppold.

“I’M MOST EXCITED ABOUT THIS BECOMING A LOCAL STAPLE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. I WANT PEOPLE TO HAVE FUN WHEN THEY COME HERE, AND I WANT TO KEEP IT A LITTLE QUIRKY.” But “ jowl-dropping pizza” is more than just a good catchphrase for Sunny’s—it’s a descriptor Oppold says extends to the pizzas he and his staff serve on a daily basis. Sunny’s specializes in thin-crust pizza that can be done and ready to serve in three minutes using a ventless oven. Pizzas are cooked to taste and made to order, giving customers the freedom to tweak the pizzeria’s house specialties or come up with their own creations. But while customization is always a draw, patrons at Sunny’s don’t have to look much further than the joint’s specialty pizzas, or Sunny’s Faves, to find something out of the norm. Options like The Augie Blues, Cougar Meat, and the Sodak Chicken dot the menu, pointing both to Oppold’s love for the local and penchant for the unique. All three of the previous pizzas use a different sauce (alfredo, Sunny’s Sauce, and buffalo sauce, respectively), and a variety of other ingredients—everything from jalapeños and bread crumbs to mushrooms and celery—to serve up something that’s a far cry from a traditional pepperoni and cheese.

“We started off with these specialty pizzas that are our own recipes and expanded from there,” said Oppold. “Some of people’s favorites so far have been our bacon cheeseburger pizza with pickles and our pepperoni pizza with pepperoni pizza rolls on it instead of just pepperoni slices.” Oppold’s love for local staples like the two colleges Sunny’s is situated between, doesn’t just stop at pizza names, though. Pretty much everything—down to the Stensland Family Farms cheese piled on top of each pie—is homegrown. “We have four taps in here,” said Oppold, “and all the kegs are brewed in Sioux Falls. This is a small place, and as a Sioux Falls native it was important to me to have that community feel within the space. We’re doing all local as much as we can.”

And what’s more local than neighborhood-wide trivia nights, college game watch parties, or speed puzzle contests? Not much. Sunny’s plans to do it all and more to cater to not only their college student audience, but also anyone who simply wants to go someplace different, try something new, and meet people who live across the street or even across town. “A big part of Sunny’s isn’t just the pizza, it’s bringing people in and having fun events that give them a chance to hang out,” said Oppold. “We’re really just about keeping it simple here. We’re a neighborhood pizza place.”

raphic designer Cody Nesbitt has had his fair share of projects. When he’s not creating logos and branding with his freelance company Good Co., Nesbitt is the graphic design manager for Sanford Health. He just wrapped up his largest project to date, Great Shots, and is also partially responsible for making people hungry with his work for Blue Rock Bar & Grill. 605 caught up with the creative on what inspires him, what he can’t live without, and what he thinks about his brother-in-law, Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Nathan “Nate” Gerry. A designer I follow is... too hard to narrow down. A couple of my top designers are Aaron Draplin and Jon Contino. A random fact about me is... I have the swimming level of a 5-year-old, and I love to set daily routines. When I worked on Blue Rock, a big part of the look came from... experience from other restaurants. I have traveled all over the world and have had the opportunit y to eat at some amazing places, most recently Disney World. The direction for this restaurant was somewhat loosely known from the beginning, but the team that worked on it helped make that direction come to life while each of us were able to add some inf luence from the inspiration we have collected over the years. It truly was a great team effort, and I am really proud of that.

Designing for a restaurant is unique because... you have to design for a wide variet y of people

in mind. Anyone can walk into the restaurant to eat, and it is the designer’s responsibilit y to appeal to ever yone and make the experience the best possible experience it can be, besides the food, of course.

Something I love ordering at Blue Rock is... the Blue Rock Sampler. Super clutch when you need a great variet y of food to go with that Busch Latte. Has just a little bit of ever ything and it is all stellar.

Something at work I can’t live without is... coffee and my A irPods. Without those, my productivit y level is around six percent.

A project I really loved working on was... Great Shots. We just wrapped that up, and it was the biggest project I have worked on. It took over a year and a half of planning, concepting, and building, but it was f inally completed in December. I have been out a couple times to golf, and it really is a great time and fun to see all of the hard work pay off in such a beautiful space.

What people might not know about the work culture at Sanford Health is... we are one big family.

We work extremely hard and fast but always make time for off ice competitions, ping pong tournaments, home run derbies, potlucks, and outdoor cookouts. It really is a great ‘work hard play hard ’ balance we have here.

My freelance business Good Co. is... just a

simple design business comprised of myself. It was created a couple years ago and is slowly taking off. I specialize in logo and branding work for small businesses. I have been able to help give my friends and family an identit y for their new business that they can be proud of, and that is incredibly rewarding. I also dabble in photography and plan on screen printing this year. I really want to be that go-to for design work when a new or local business doesn’t want to go through the hassle or spend the big bucks on an agency. I just want to make good design for good people.

Something that would surprise people about Nate Gerry is... he is super down to earth. He always makes time to take fan photos and sign autographs. He is also a huge family guy and loves to spend time with them.

Watching Nate play is... surreal. I remember watching him play with his brother, Matt, in the dome for the championship as a freshman with Washington [High School]. Then making frequent trips to Lincoln to watch him play at [Universit y of ] Nebraska in front of 94,000 people was crazy. Now in the NFL with the Eagles is just surreal. The kid has worked his tail off to earn his journey ever y step of the way, so there are no surprises on how he got there, but watching him play against Tom Brady during Monday Night Football? Yeah, that is still insane to me.

When I walk around downtown, one of my favorite places to stop by is... either Josiah’s [Coffeehouse & Café] or Fernson [Downtown]. I love to eat and drink.

Something that is influencing me right now is... my growing

family. It just shows me that time is not slowing down, so if I don’t start making moves now and tr ying to pursue my goals, the opportunit y window on accomplishing these goals closes and they turn into lost causes. Also showing my kids that they can be whoever they want to be and do whatever they want to do as long as they follow their dreams and set goals.

“Taking a break from screens and technology gives me a chance to be present, and that always provides inspiration and a little recharge to hop back on the computer.”

One thing I love about South Dakota is... the people. Ever y time

I travel it is fun to be away for a short while and experience a different cit y, but I quick ly miss home and the down-to-earth communit y that South Dakota offers.

“I would say the majority of our business is probably business casual with a mix of some families,” said general assistant manager Ghena Ferguson. “We get an overflow of events at the [Denny Sanford] Premier Center, like sports events and concerts.” One of these events that the crew is preparing for is the Summit League Basketball Tournament happening March 7-10. “It’s packed wall to wall,” said executive chef Richard Lockard. “Marching bands come through and play the fight song, depending on how well they do. If they win or lose, they might drink more.” One of the restaurant’s themed drinks for the Summit League will be the Slam Dunk, which has whiskey, cranberry juice, ginger beer, and a lime twist. For visitors and for locals, the Sheraton has a few specials that give a taste of home, like The Local. This salad has chopped romaine topped with red onions, diced tomatoes, cheese curds, and an order of house-seasoned chislic.

“It’s a spin on a South Dakota favorite,” said Lockard. “It’s local chislic with Stensland Family Farms cheese curds.” For dressing, he recommends the sriracha ranch. “It’s something different to spice it up,” said Lockard. A fresh dish that is a special right now is the Buddha Bowl, which Lockard says is his go-to when he’s hungry at work. This includes a quinoa and wild rice blend topped with avocado, carrots, cucumbers, spiced garbanzos, purple kale, and radishes. “And then it’s all topped off with a peanut sauce,” said the chef. Some of the Sheraton’s best sellers are the Ribeye (with whiskey peppercorn cream) and the New York Strip Sandwich (served on a hoagie roll). “[The steak sandwich] is nice and tender; you don’t need a knife to cut it with. It’s cooked well every time,” said Ferguson.

Then there’s the Jerry Burger—a six-ounce hand-formed beef patty topped with bacon and onion marmalade, sriracha, a jalapeño spread, and smoked gouda cheese, served on a salt-and-pepper bun. “It’s named after our most famous bellman,” said Lockard. “We were putting it together for the menu and he walked by and tried it and liked it, so we named it the Jerry Burger.” The staff says they enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and, most of all, giving visitors a taste of South Dakota. “You definitely don’t have to be in a business suit and you don’t have to feel underdressed or overdressed when you come in,” said Ferguson. “Our clientele is all over the board.” Lockard added, “There’s a lot of twists on things you can find around town, but there’s also a lot of things that are unique just to this restaurant and my menu.”

After 15 years away, Pangburn-Walker has returned to her hometown and started The Farmhouse Bistro & Bar. It opened in June, and she owns the restaurant with her brother, Christopher. “This piece of property became available right on the creek and we just really couldn’t pass it up,” said Pangburn-Walker. The Farmhouse is located on the former Meier Ranch property and sits on the original site of the ranch’s farmhouse, which is how it got its name. Pangburn-Walker has worked to preserve the historical feel. “The bar top in the bar at The Farmhouse is actually made of reclaimed wood from the Meier Ranch. We also have a really cool, giant cabinet that was used as the pantry in the original farmhouse on the ranch, so it’s kind of neat,” said Pangburn-Walker. “Also, the architectural style of the building was based on the buildings that were here before.” Pangburn-Walker describes The Farmhouse’s food as casual, fine dining that features classic American comfort food. With a heavily seafood-based menu, some of their most popular dishes are scallops, ahi tuna, and walleye. The restaurant has been well received in Spearfish, which Pangburn-Walker associates with the South Dakotan community.

Since I can remember eating bagels, I’ve been eating Bagel Boy. It’s a Sioux Falls staple and one of my favorite places for a quick breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Yes, you can eat bagels anytime. Is it bad they know my name and my order? If you’ve never been, their everything bagel is everything.

I have always loved living close to McKennan Park (and so do my dogs). I could walk them there every day and never get tired of it. Summer is especially fun when they have music on Monday nights.

Sometimes the basics are the best. Crack’d Pot Restaurant is a local, down home cooking, no frills kind-of-place. You can sit right at the counter and get a hot cup of coffee from the same friendly face every day. If I need a hash brown and pancake fix, it’s at the top of the list.

A

n up-and-coming eatery in downtown Sioux Falls is shooting for the moon with its creative menus and inclusive atmosphere. Siblings Tatiana and Salvador Jaimes manage La Luna Café, which is owned by their parents, Edith and Salvador. Tatiana and Edith had been dreaming of opening their own eatery for almost three years, and they finally opened the doors to La Luna in mid-October. Tatiana says she wanted to name the family business La Luna (Spanish for moon) to reflect the family’s heritage.

“I came up with it and I just thought ‘that’s fun, the moon,’” she said. “I wanted it to be in Spanish so people can get an idea that this isn’t just an American coffee shop, there’s something behind it.” The Jaimes work to make La Luna’s food delicious and innovative, while also transforming their eatery into a gathering space for the community and the thriving arts scene. “My mom and I were the visionaries of La Luna, and we were set on having a very artistic place where we wanted to invite the community to showcase their talents while enjoying a gathering space that celebrates them,” said Tatiana. “That’s why we hang up a bunch of local art, and why we try to be inclusive in our menus to make sure that most people are able to eat here.”

TOASTS Tatiana says she wanted to make the café a fun and welcoming environment for customers, and for folks living and working at the mixed-use Cascade at Falls Park building in downtown Sioux Falls. One of the most popular drinks at La Luna is the Cha Cha Latte, which ties back to the Jaimes’ family’s El Salvadorean roots.

“When you taste it, you want to say ‘oh my gosh,’” said Salvador. “It’s not a typical coffee flavor, especially because of the ginger and turmeric mix. It makes it kind of a spicy drink, but it’s also sweet, due to the honey.”

“It’s based off of a staple Hispanic drink that’s rice milk, very sweet and cinnamon-y,” said Tatiana. “We wanted to incorporate part of our heritage into what La Luna is. That’s why that is one of our favorites here.”

“This is our most fun and interactive waff le, because you get your own syringe and you can decide to inject it like our chefs have done, or you can drizzle it on top, or just eat it right out of the syringe,” said Tatiana.

La Luna also serves espresso milkshakes, specialty lattes, and more unique coffee concoctions. Their house latte, La Luna Latte, is made with white chocolate and raspberry f lavors. One other staple latte is the Ay Caramba! Latte, which is mixed with turmeric, ginger, and honey.

Besides waffles, the eatery features toast, open-face sandwiches, pizza, and more. The Jaimes’ worked with chef Micah Abraham to develop the menu. Toast options include the Caprese Avocado, which Tatiana recommends for any time of day.

“We make the guacamole in-house, and we just chop up fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil leaves and drizzle a balsamic glaze on top,” she said. They also serve Green Eggs & Ham! toast, featuring caramelized bacon with brown sugar, cheddar cheese as a base, sliced boiled eggs, and they mix the egg yolks with the house guacamole. Then it’s topped with house salsa and cilantro.

The Pollo Loco toast features chicken salad with a twist. Abraham infuses the mayonnaise with ginger and orange zest, mixes it with baked chicken, sets it on a light salad, and sprinkles it with candied pecans. “It has very unique flavor profiles that surprisingly work together,” said Tatiana. “It has an interesting spice to it, but it’s not spicy.” Edith’s idea for the Bacon Sunrise Breakfast pizza brings a fresh take on breakfast, with pizza dough, sour cream, caramelized onions, mozzarella cheese, a cracked egg on top, and bacon bits. “I have it eight days a week,” joked Salvador.

“Our whole house is black and white with wood accents,” said White. “Having that color palette allows things like pictures and décor to pop a little more.” The top floor of the split level home opens with the living room, dining room, and kitchen, which are all open to each other. White walls and black accents give each room their own flair, while keeping things cohesive and airy. “Instead of tiling the fireplace, we decided to install black shiplap, which has definitely made it the focal point of our living room,” said White. “In that same style, our kitchen cabinets are white, but our island is black.”

Walking through the open concept, White points out that the backsplash in her kitchen is her favorite part of the room, which ties in both the black and white, with an eye-catching design aspect. “It just acts as a nice contrast to the rest of the space,” said White. With white walls and black accents in place, the Whites needed one more thing to complete their upstairs living area: wood. Instead of the normal tray ceiling that is common to L4 Holdings, White decided to add wooden beams across the entirety of the ceiling.

“We were really going for a modern farmhouse look and the beams turned out amazing,” said White. “It is the perfect transition from the black and white, and gives the space some warmth.” The rest of the upper level houses two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a master bath; which to White is a much needed upgrade. “The two bathrooms upstairs were a huge plus to us, coming from a house with one upstairs bathroom,” said White. “We have little kids now, but when they get older, I think it will be really nice to have our own bathroom.” With future relaxation in mind, White personalized the master bath and bedroom to keep things clean and sleek, using all whites for the “sanctuary” effect. Also unique to their room is their lighting, something White says is multipurpose. “Instead of installing can lights above the bed, we decided on these black and wood light fixtures that come out from the wall,” said White. “They incorporate the farmhouse aspect to our room, as well as add something to our wall.” The other upstairs bedroom, and one that veers from the monochromatic style, is 1-year-old Korby’s. With muted-pink walls and flowering greenery, White says this is a room Korby can grow into. “I thought each kid needed something fun or different about their room, so we hung an outdoor macrame swing in the corner of her room,” said White. “Even though she is too little to use it right now, I think she’ll grow to appreciate it.”

The same goes for older brother Kian, whose downstairs bedroom includes a black accent wall and a bed frame fit for an adventurous 2-year-old.

The modern farmhouse look doesn’t end there, but continues to the outside of the home. The white exterior is met with black garage doors, black shutters, and a black front door, creating the same contrast as inside.

“Kian has this really cool wooden bed frame that is his own playhouse,” said White. “It’s pretty modern with not a lot of detail, but it’s like his own little castle.”

“I was a little worried about the black doors, but when we saw the sleek five-pane front door, we knew it was perfect,” said White.

Just outside of the fortress is the downstairs living area. With jerseys lining the wall and a small bar area, it seems like any sports lover’s dream. “I kind of let Tanner take over on planning this space, so this is kind of his spot,” said White. “We have three TVs, a large one and two smaller ones on either side, which is fun on big game days.”

And perfect her house feels. From Saturday mornings spent in front of the fireplace to Sunday afternoons spent downstairs, White says she and her family finally feel at home. “Even if it doesn’t make sense to someone else, make your home how you want it,” said White. “As long as it makes sense to you, that’s all that matters.”+

We took exit 263 to Chamberlain, where we soon took a right to head up the road toward Taco John’s (that’s how I reference it because I’ve stopped there… a few times). Alas, we were trying Spanish cuisine at Mi Pueblo this lunch hour, which was a newer restaurant addition to the area. This shook Taylor, because she currently works at Gateway Lounge in Sioux Falls part time, and Mi Pueblo is in the former Gateway West. It legit still has the Food & Lounge signage on the outside. She walked around feeling surreal with the Gateway-style tables and booths, but the rest was definitely on brand with the new tenant. Colorful décor hung from the ceiling, and an adorable tiki bar was right in viewpoint when you enter. A wall of hats also made it festive, along with an array of artwork.

Our group was getting hangry, so we stretched out by the back of the restaurant, which was very private with great windows. It was right next to an indoor patio, which can have garage doors opened when the weather cooperates. The Mi Pueblo team was the definition of friendly, and they worked with us on picking some of their favorite dishes. First up, chips and salsa with a side of their Cheese Dip and Guacamole. Taylor and I gushed about the presentation, as the salsa comes in a mini pitcher you can pour into as many little bowls as your heart desires. I was dipping into the cheese dip and then into the salsa (as I do) when the Molcajete Dinner arrived. This had beef chorizo, shrimp, chicken, bell peppers, tomatoes, queso, onions, pico de gallo, sour cream, and guacamole, and was served with flour tortillas. This fajita dish came out steaming, full of goodness. Vaney dug in.

“It’s a good quantity, and it keeps it in a bowl that keeps it warm, so there’s nothing wrong with that,” he said. He then dubbed it as the “meat bowl,” but it was so much more. All of the ingredients packed it with flavor, and they also brought out a lot of juices. Taylor cringed every time Vaney said it was juicy. Next was the #9 Combination with two beef tacos, Mexican rice, and refried beans. I took a bite and it was fresh and crunchy, but it was even better when I added some of the salsa to kick it up a notch, and to moisten (Taylor also hated when I said this) it. The rice, though. This was the best side of rice I’ve ever had. No joke. A side of rice? More like it should be the star of the show. Chiles Rellenos came out, which had two chiles stuffed with cheese and topped with ranchero sauce, served with Mexican rice, refried beans, and tortillas. This one was good, but nowhere near what the others had in store visually and taste-wise.

We moved on to the Chimichanga Special. Mind you, when Vaney asked about this dish, he asked them if there was an error. “Is there a comma error or something, because this says you can get ‘one beef, one chicken, and shrimp chimichanga’ served with salad, rice, and beans for $10.99. You choose between beef, chicken or shrimp, correct?” “No, you get them all.” He wasn’t lying. We all dug in, and I instantly went to the chicken, as did Vaney. “The chicken chimichanga is really good, and usually I find chicken boring,” he said. “Beef is where it’s at a lot of times.” The chimichangas were smothered in melted cheese, and there was a pile of lettuce, pico de gallo, and sour cream in the middle. We all were raving about this choice. “I’d make a stop for the chimichangas,” said Taylor. Last was the Pollo Lopez with two boneless chicken breasts specially seasoned with bell peppers, bacon, and cheese on top, served with tortillas, rice, and beans.

“This is a bold move on a road trip.”

I looked over and Vaney played dead in his chair. I asked, “Are you okay, what is it?”

BOTTOM LINE: Mi Pueblo is an excellent stop for locals or for road trips/vacations. You could see the Missouri River out the window, and we talked about enjoying our Mango Margarita and Piña Coloda outside on a nice day. The restaurant’s menu has what seems like a million items, so I’m looking forward to stopping by again soon. You better believe I’m getting rice and a chicken chimichanga.

The location can be seen from I-90 and is festive inside. There are TVs for sports, and we watched an episode of Maury while we feasted. He was, in fact, “the father.”

The prices are beyond reasonable. It’s almost a steal, to be honest. I couldn’t find anything for $20 or more.

I feel like it’s my duty to spread the word about this side of rice. While most places treat it as an afterthought, Mi Pueblo has created a masterpiece. Also, this place made Vaney like chicken. Need I say more? Oh yeah, and Taylor got so into the chips, salsa, cheese dip, and guacamole that she kept forgetting to try the entrées.

What I’ve Learned It isn’t my job to decide what Sloan will like and not like, it is my job to offer her enough variety to make that decision herself. Exposure is key. If your little one denies a specific food once, don’t give up. It can take children up to 10 different times of exposure to be comfortable with some food. Keep trying. Trust your child’s gut. Children have a great sense of when enough is enough, so avoid using phrases like “just one more bite,” which teaches them to ignore their body’s signs.

I remember Reid and I recorded her first couple bites of rice cereal mixed with breast milk. As excited as we were, it was a little anti-climactic because, as some of you may know, it takes a while for humans to perfect the act of chewing. Nonetheless, she was as excited as we were and we began buying one of each kind of baby food from plain peas to fruit medleys, eager to find out what her favorite foods would be so I could start adding it to my (not-so-monthly) updates on Facebook and Instag ram. Having worked at a daycare, I knew that we needed to offer her vegetables before fruit because of their little palates. She was enthusiastic about the Carrot-Sweet Potato-Pea combo, as well as the PearZucchini-Corn medley. We quickly learned that anything green was not her cup of tea, especially the plain Green Beans. And honestly, after smelling them, I didn’t blame her. Once we started introducing actual solid foods, like Cheerios and blueberries, things got interesting. Homegirl likes to eat. Like, a lot.

Which is something I can appreciate, and I thought this was the perfect scenario for getting her to try a whole plethora of foods. My vivacity for this was quickly dampened when we realized she was finding her core four foods and eating them like it was her job. While I was happy she was eating, I was frustrated she wasn’t trying (and liking) more foods. I was feeling discouraged when I remembered the few things I actually read to prepare for being a parent. Children need time to learn. With everything. No exceptions. And us, as parents, need time to teach. So Reid and I did some research and realized there were plenty of factors that could be influencing her appetite. Things like texture, temperature, size, and presentation were all elements that we had the power to control and change in an effort to accommodate to her needs. We began offering warm oatmeal instead of cold cereal, cutting the bananas into disks instead of spears, and once she had more teeth we figured out that she liked eating a whole apple more than slices.

As far as accommodations were concerned, they stopped there. In the same way we can’t determine her personal taste in food, we also can’t stifle what she has the opportunity to try. And that meant making the same foods for Sloan as we made for ourselves-which was, and still isn’t, easy. Having to make food for the three of us meant Reid and I had to start eating balanced meals, and our meals had to consist of more than spaghetti and baked chicken with rice. We figured out a solid list of meals we liked and wanted to try, and started the process of familiarizing Sloan with foods like chicken, mushrooms, mashed potatoes, and beets. Knowing she was going to chow down any and all fruit, we made it a rule to give her the fruit last. There were a lot of “nos.” So many nos. It didn’t take long for us to realize we needed a quick and easy backup plan for the meals she would spit out like an angry alpaca.

Enter: ravioli. If Sloan was made up of her favorite food, she would be a walking ravioli with blueberries for hands and feet. When the cooked zucchini was too slimy and the chicken was taking too long to chew, we would offer her what we call “safe foods.” These are foods we know she likes, foods she feels comfortable eating, and ones we know won’t go to waste.

Having one or two safe options available at the same time as new food may ease any reluctance, which is common when children are trying new things. There are still days when all she will eat are Goldfish and dried cranberries, which are the days that leave me feeling disheartened. Until I recognize the need for comfort food every now and then.

This doesn’t make Sloan an unhealthy child and it doesn’t make me a lackluster parent, it just makes us human. Give yourself grace when starting solid foods with your little one, and remember that the key to raising a willing and confident eater is variety, patience, and blueberries.+

5 QUESTIONS WITH WILSON WHEN DID YOU GET INTO COOKING, AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO SUCH HEALTHY HABITS/COOKING?

Eight years ago I knew I needed to change something in order to improve my health and lose weight. I simply started eating more fruits and vegetables and cut out what I knew was not serving my body. Before I knew it, my health was improving and the weight was falling off effortlessly, all while I was eating as much fresh produce as I wanted, and without restricting calories. Realizing I had found something special with raw foods, I made it a priority to share with others and help them find better health through creating healing meals. I studied to become a raw food chef at the Healing Food Academy in Bali so I could offer a delicious way to share my passion and introduce more people to nutrient-rich raw foods.

HOW CAN PEOPLE USE BEE LOVED KITCHEN?

At this time I provide meal prep services where I prepare meals which are delivered to my customers each morning. I also offer my services as a personal chef where I prep meals for families in their home, providing them with a full refrigerator of healthy and delicious meals to eat throughout the week. Another focus of my business is education, as I teach others to make raw vegan food through cooking classes and my cookbook. WHAT IS THE RAW RESET YOU OFFER?
