LOCAL ALL-AGES BOUTIQUE EXPANDS ITS OFFERINGS ONLINE AND IN STORES

A Tea-based women’s fashion boutique initially founded as an online store has rapidly blossomed into a booming business with multiple locations, a 15,000-square-foot warehouse, and its own clothing line. We stopped by to chat with Laurie Karlson, founder of Lauriebelles, at the store’s newest brick-and-mortar location in downtown Sioux Falls.

The boutique, which took over the old Palmer Lea location on Phillips Avenue, is cozy and inviting for shoppers—a theme Karlson aims for in the clothing she sells, as well. Providing comfortable, yet trendy pieces, along with endless variety in both styles and sizing, is a large part of what sets Lauriebelles apart from other local boutiques. Though Sioux Falls is now home to numerous women’s boutiques across town, there wasn’t much competition back in 2013 when Karlson launched her online store. She had recently finished her master’s degree in education and was staying home with her two sons when she realized she wanted to get back into the workforce. It wasn’t a job in education that was calling her name, though.

“I just wasn’t sure that teaching was my calling anymore, and so I was looking for some kind of side gig to make some extra money to help with the bills,” said Karlson. “At the time, there wasn’t much around for boutiques, so it seemed like a niche I could fill.” It only took four months before the online business had reached its tipping point. “Opening our first small storefront in Tea became a necessity, and within a few months, we had to expand to the front of the building,” said Karlson. Expansion continued at a rapid clip, and after three years, it was clear that leasing space wasn’t going to cut it anymore. In 2018, Lauriebelles moved into its current 6,000-square-foot store in Tea, and in 2019, they built a new warehouse across the street. Online sales are the largest part of the business— Lauriebelles ships nationwide and to 15 countries internationally—but providing a quality in-store experience is still important to Karlson. “We live in a special area where people still value spending time with friends and family in a shopping environment because it’s something to do to get out of the house,” she said. “We work really hard to accommodate customers with amazing products, customer service, and lots of community events.”

With a full-time staff of 17 and up to 60 part-time employees, Karlson says having a team she can count on is key to her success, whether that’s in online sales or in-store events. “The crew that I’ve built up over the years is an incredible group of people, and we’ve really become a family,” she said. Keeping things fresh Between building a warehouse, opening a downtown storefront in October, and launching a clothing line and influencer partnership, 2019 was a busy year for Karlson. “I never get comfortable in this business—that’s when the growth stops,” said Karlson. “I’m always pushing to differentiate myself because if you just continue to buy and sell clothes, you stop being relevant.” In the spirit of keeping things fresh, Karlson launched Lily and Lottie, a clothing line unique to Lauriebelles. The plan was to eventually wholesale to other boutiques, but for the time being, internal sales alone have been enough to keep Karlson busy. The idea behind Lily and Lottie was to build out a line of affordable, staple pieces that people would continue to come back to. These include layering pieces like tanks, tees, and cardigans, as well as denim and jackets.

Recently, Karlson added another exciting element to the line in the form of a collaboration with local celebrity, Chelsea DeBoer, of Teen Mom. Together, DeBoer and Karlson have designed a few special pieces for the line, under the brand Chelsea DeBoer by Lily and Lottie. The project began after the two were introduced by a mutual acquaintance. It started out as an opportunity to work together on photo shoots and try-on haul videos, but Karlson quickly realized how well DeBoer’s style meshed with her own. Lauriebelles strives to appeal to women of all ages, whether they’re 17 or 75 years old, and it achieve that by providing high-quality, affordable, and comfortable pieces that are stylish, but not too risky. “We want to be trendy and on point, but also safe in our style,” said Karlson. “I want something that I know I can wear for many seasons to come.” Still, Karlson likes to inject personality and statement pieces into the brand from time to time, and she says DeBoer’s style is a bit edgier than what she typically carries. DeBoer’s current pieces for Lily and Lottie include a trendy buffalo check button-down and a camouflage cowl-neck sweater. The partnership between the two women has been going strong for about nine months now, and Karlson says it just keeps evolving.

“We’re always trying to find new catalysts to bring energy to our business, and we have so much in the works for 2020,” she said. It would be easy to assume that expanding stores and designing her own clothing line might be the most rewarding aspects of the business for Karlson, but there’s something else she appreciates even more. “What this has allowed me to do as far as giving back to our community, through nonprofits or individuals, is so rewarding,” she said. “I’ve always enjoyed doing that, but I didn’t have the funds to do as much as I wanted to.” Whether it’s hosting an in-store Shop for a Cause event, or getting the opportunity to make an impact on a woman’s self-esteem through her clothing, Karlson says she’s incredibly grateful for the customers she gets to interact with daily. “They’re extremely loyal, and that means the world to us,” she said. “The relationships we’ve built and some of the feedback we get from these women is so humbling. It’s changing their self-esteem, and it’s not just the clothing, it’s my crew and how they treated them and made them feel.”

The aforementioned flatbread is the Truff le & Prosciutto Flatbread with roasted garlic aioli, prosciutto, braised mushrooms, smoked mozzarella, arugula, truffle oil, and parmesan. Another winter item is the Balsamic Steak Salad. This includes flank steak, mixed greens, fingerling potatoes, heirloom tomatoes, gorgonzola, roasted red onion, hard boiled egg, and balsamic vinaigrette. Mouw said, “Off our winter feature menu I love that Bone-In Pork Chop.” The seasonal pork chop dish has caramelized apple, cider glaze, fingerling potatoes, and French beans. Winter specials also include drink items, like the Cranpeary Mimosa, which Mouw says has been “selling like crazy.”

“We ran [the Cranpeary Mimosa] in the fall, and it was so popular we ran it again,” he said. Need to warm up? Try the Snow Day. This has double chocolate liqueur, peppermint schnapps, coffee, and whip. In regards to the regular menu, Mouw says people love the salmon. “We sell a lot of our salmon,” he said. “Our chef makes sure we always have really good fish in.” The Grilled Salmon is available at dinner and has lemon dill crème, cucumber relish, chive mashed potatoes, and fresh vegetables. Mangene says his lunchtime favorite is everything that includes All Day Café’s fried chicken. “One of my favorites during lunch is probably the Crusted Chicken Sandwich,” he said.

“That sweet and spicy slaw in there is so good. Our Chicken N’ Waff le has been really popular with patrons, too. I can’t believe how many of those we sell.” Mangene recently added more to the favorite offering, and it now includes a Belgian waffle, buttermilk crisp fried chicken, bacon, sunnyside-up egg, vanilla bourbon syrup, and whipped butter. As seasons change, Mouw says to always check on the ever-changing specials. “We always have seasonal special menus for food and drinks,” he said. “And they’re always reasonably priced. Our seasonal drinks are always six dollars.”

Still in the process of completing the community, Olivier gave a tour of the different models available for purchase while delving into the concept of the estates, from the age restriction to the various amenities. “We have units available to purchase on a leased lot, which comes with water, sewer, lawn care, and snow removal,” said Olivier. “Being a 45-and-older community, we want to make these homes as comfortable and enjoyable as [our residents’] main house.” Such comfort comes in the form of granite countertops, custom cabinetry, and knowing that camping no longer means spending half of your trip packing and unpacking supplies. “We want to take camping to the next level,” said Olivier. “This way, people can just get in their cars on Friday after work and head straight for the lake. “The porch on our 42-foot model was a huge hit. It’s just a space where people can sit outside and enjoy the beautiful view of Lewis & Clark Marina.” Walking through the various models, Olivier says there are perks to each one, from front porches to open concepts, giving Olivier the opportunity to tailor each one to every owner. “The 40-foot model is compact, efficient, and great for people wanting a simple lake life,” said Olivier. “Then you have the 42-foot model that is really great for entertaining because it has a great kitchen-to-living room area-and the addition of the side patio allows for a great flow from inside to outside.” Olivier went on to explain that the 46-foot model is the most family friendly, with

bedrooms on each end of the unit and a little bit larger bathroom than the others. Having a unit that could fit a family, or multiple people, was vital to Olivier and the concept he is establishing. “We may be a 45+ community, but we are all about family and friends, which is why we are including overflow parking in addition to the two parking spots at each home,” said Olivier. “Once completed, we will have golf carts parked at the parking lot for guests to use to get around the community.” Not only will there be adequate parking,

With guests, utilities, and inclement weather accounted for, the last thing was storage. Having such a small amount of square footage, 540-640 per unit, Olivier knew that guests would need somewhere to store their bigger items. “We know a lot of people will want to have their lake toys out here, but we also want to keep the community looking fresh and clean,” said Olivier. “So, instead of having them parked outside of their homes, we created a shared 20,000-square-foot, on-site storage space for our residents.” Speaking of keeping things uncluttered and uniform, all of the units are made with the same materials for siding and roofing. The exterior colors can be chosen from a set color palette, and as far as personalization of the surrounding area goes, there are some rules residents must follow. “We want the community to look put together and clean, so residents can only have gas fire pits, barbecue grills, or hot tubs on their 16x16 concrete patio,” said Olivier. “There is also the option for a privacy fence if they so choose.”

Olivier wanted to make sure the whole family could enjoy the space, so indoor pets are allowed in the units, as long as there are no exterior kennels. “Everyone has a pet, so it was a no-brainer that we make it pet-friendly,” said Olivier. If you’re thinking this sounds like a great investment for the summer, but you’re worried about the bitter winters of South Dakota, Olivier wants to make it clear that a lack of available activities in the Yankton area during the colder weather is most definitely a misconception. “There are so many great things Yankton has to offer in the winter,” said Olivier. “We want to bring that to people’s attention and make sure they enjoy their time here all year long.”

“I had absolutely no idea. I had no concept of this, Even when I was brewing for friends.” -KEITH, LOOKING BACK ON WHAT HAD COME FROM HIS FIRST GALLON OF KOMBUCHA.

IT STARTED WITH A GALLON JAR . AND THEN FIVE OF THEM. AND THEN 20, AF TER HIS FRIENDS FOUND OUT. A FEW MONTHS L ATER , KEITH HOUDASHELT WAS BREWING 100 GALLONS OF KOMBUCHA AT A TIME; JARS OF THE FIZ Z Y, FERMENTED TEA ELIXIR CROWDED THE COUNTERS OF HIS HOME. That was five years ago, when Keith spent 100 hours a week building custom homes in Bozeman, Mont., the same thing he’d done every day for the past 30 years. “Work all day. Brew all night.” It was killing him, he said, and soon he had to decide to which passion he’d devote the rest of his life to.

“I said, ‘I’m done with this,’” Keith remembered, seated at a wood table inside Lone Pine Kombucha, a glass of his own tropical blend in front of him. “So I finished my last house and jumped into kombucha full time. It was a leap of faith.” The leap landed Keith on 7th Street in downtown Rapid City, where he and his then soon-to-be wife, Cindi, operate South Dakota’s lone kombucha taproom. They rotate 60 flavors through 18 taps year-round at their quaint headquarters and distribute to dozens of locations from Spearfish to Sioux Falls. “We’re a team,” said Cindi. “Everything we do is a team effort.” When the Houdashelts opened the doors to Lone Pine in the spring of 2018, with it came the introduction of kombucha brewing to South Dakota. Before the Spearfish-based Scobi Kombucha joined the newborn scene later that year, the couple owned the only kombucha license in the state.

Kombucha’s base is comprised of black tea, yeast, and cane sugar (Keith Houdashelt estimates he uses three milligrams of sugar per eight ounces of kombucha). While the mixture ferments for a week or longer, bacteria and acids -the good kind, known as probioticsand a small amount of alcohol form inside, making the glass jug a sort of terrarium. What’s produced is a fizzy drink that is said to improve gut health, among other benefits:

Kombucha isn’t a “cure-all,” Cindi warns, but it works in different ways from person-to-person. For Cindi, it soothed her joints. For Rhonda, a Lone Pine regular, it resolved her digestive issues to the point she no longer needed medication. Even kids can benefit; Keith brews Concord Grape and Cherry Tart flavors as an alternative to soda that the “little people” enjoy. But be aware: what comes from the bottle is different than what comes fresh from the tap. The Food and Drug Administration requires brewers to filter and pasteurize bottled batches, which kills some of the living bacteria inside.

“No one was doing it here,” said Keith. “It was a perfect market in my mind.” That meant their new challenge resided not in competition, but education. It’s taken some time for the area to acknowledge the legitimacy of kombucha, Cindi said, even though they craft it with produce as local as South Dakota allows. In response, they’ve discovered an effective strategy to enlighten people: shoving it in their faces. For example: at last year’s Chocopalooza — the Dahl Arts Center’s annual Valentine’s Day chocolate festival — the Houdashelts showed up with tanks of Cherry Chocolate kombucha to serve as a non-alcoholic option, running out long before the microbrewers alongside them. This year, they’ve prepared batches of Chocolate Huckleberry and Cherry Vanilla for the event. “We just say, ‘here, try it,’” said Keith. “People will say ‘I bought some from a store and didn’t like it.’ Kombucha is like coffee or beer; there’s a difference between what comes from a bottle and what somebody made fresh for you.”

In June, the New York Times described kombucha as a “hippie-cat provision,” and two years earlier said the probiotic-infused concoction “was something your art teacher might have made in her basement.” In the public’s eye, kombucha is a product of millennialism that pairs well with açaí bowls and thrifted “mom jeans.”

“We’ll never go smaller. We’ll always go bigger,” said Cindi. “But not so big that we can’t sit down with someone for a couple of minutes: ‘How are you doing? How do you feel? How are the grandkids?’ We’ve built up a clientele. We have regulars. We can tell you what day it is and who’s coming in.”

Tell that to the players of the Rapid City Rush, the city’s ECHL hockey team, for whom Lone Pine is now the “official kombucha provider.” The Houldshelts created a four-berry blend, coined The Rush, which they keep in constant supply for the skaters.

And to the Houdashelts, that’s the magic of kombucha: a living, breathing beverage that connects them with living, breathing people.

“We put a machine and two taps in the locker room for them. They pour their own,” said Keith. “You got guys burning 6,000-7,000 calories a day; their nutrition is their life. Any edge they can gain. They love it.” The Houdashelts don’t foresee themselves opening another taproom on the other side of the state (Lone Pine is, at heart, an ambitious retirement gig), but endeavors such as this keep them in continual expansion.

Singing Bowls

One of my favorite events we host at my studio is the Crystal and Tibetan Singing Bowls Meditation by Veronika Ludewig-Jorgensen. Soul Story Yoga has the original hardwood floor, rustic exposed-brick walls, and high ceilings, so I love how the sounds of the bowls reverberate through the space and you can feel them vibrate through the floor.

Loves a Good Landmark

The double-decker Meridian Bridge is a longtime Yankton landmark. It was built in 1924 and was the first permanent bridge across the Missouri River. The bridge was closed to traffic in 2008 but reopened as a pedestrian bridge in 2011. It’s popular with runners, bicyclists, and walkers. The view of the river is great. On some days, you’ll see a bald eagle or two gliding over it. When my Boston Terrier was younger, it was our go-to place to walk him. He’s more into napping than walking these days.

Music at the Meridian

In July and August, the City of Yankton hosts Music at the Meridian on Thursday nights. There’s a small temporary stage with live music set up at the foot of our Meridian Bridge. People bring chairs or set up blankets on the lawn. There are a few food trucks and Ben’s Brewing Company pours craft beer. For the last three summers there was also the opportunity to paint a tile to be assembled as part of a large Yankton-themed mural at the base of the bridge.

Underrated Live Music

Yankton has some amazing opportunities to view and listen to music for a town our size. We have a little historic AME Chapel that’s no longer used as a church. It’s hosted live music since 2017, as well as the Little White Church Sessions. Sometimes it’s really talented local people, but more often it’s medium-to small-name acts passing through while on tour. So far, I’ve seen Gaelynn Lea, David Dondero, Andrea von Kampen, Izaak Opatz, and Caroline Keys there.

5 Random Facts + I was born in Yankton and have lived in Yankton all of my life, except for the time in which I completed my undergraduate and master’s degrees at USD.

+ My husband and I share part of a block of season tickets for USD football every year with my in-laws. I like it for the fun vibe, camaraderie, and soft pretzels.

+ I like to travel, and my favorite destination is Cabo san Lucas. The best part is the whale watching in January and February when the humpback whales get really close to the coastline.

+ I’ve been teaching yoga in Yankton for about 12 years. I completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training in Omaha, NEb. in 2008. In February 2017, I trained for 100 hours with my all-time favorite yoga instructor, Jason Crandell, in San Francisco.

+ The 5th Annual South Dakota Yoga Conference is this summer (July 31-August 2) in Spearfish. I’ve presented at the conference three of the last four years and will be presenting again this year. My husband, Jeremy, and I don’t go out for drinks a lot, but if we’re going to go, it’s nearly always Ben’s Brewing Co. or The Copper Room upstairs. I like to sample the local beer. One of my favorites is Ben’s Kenny Pepper, a jalapeño cream ale. My husband enjoys the selection of bourbon and whiskey, and The Copper Room is also a great place to relax and listen to some great music.

Mexico Viejo, Tho

Mexico Viejo is my favorite restaurant in town. It’s a fun, quick place to go with friends or family, and the staff are always friendly. I eat mostly vegan, and their Vegetarian Burrito is my go-to order, though I do ask for no cheese or sour cream. My husband and I love to get Friday night takeout from there after a long week. The last time we did, someone had written “Go vegan!” on the lid of my order and had drawn a “thumbs up” sign. I thought that was a nice touch.

Recreationally Relaxing

I love living near Lewis and Clark Lake. A few years ago, my husband and I bought a 1992 Sun Tracker Party Barge pontoon. It’s not much to look at and is really too big for what we need, but the price was right. We have a fun time taking it out on our own or with friends and family. We feel really lucky to be able to live near such a great recreation spot, and we like that we don’t have to plan too far in advance to take our boat out since the lake is such a short drive away. I like to relax and read a book in the sun.

Hoppy They’re Here

Husband-and-wife team Ryan Heine and Michelle Donner own 6th Meridian Hop Farm near Lewis and Clark Lake west of Yankton, and they grow hops used to brew craft beers. On Saturday and Sunday evenings in the summer they host live music, pour local beers brewed with their hops, and give short tours of the hops field. The couple also owns food truck called Counterfeit Curbside and it’s usually on hand serving unique fare. This last summer they hosted their first festival called the Swinged Cat Aliment & Ale Fest with tastings from 15 breweries from around the region. The hops farm events are a great place to hear great tunes, relax, and visit with friends.

Murals and the Meridian

Because of its proximity to the Meridian Bridge, Yankton’s downtown is called the Meridian District. And through a movement called The Meridian District Art Project, several colorful murals by talented local artists have recently been added to some of the cool, old brick buildings there. Besides doing yoga, I love to take walks, and downtown is one of my favorite places to walk.

PRAIRIE TICKETS: Risk it for the Ticket BY AUSTIN LAMMERS

RIAN OPP BEGAN THE 2010S AS A BROKE STUDENT STUDYING JOURNALISM BY TECHNICALITY AND TICKET MARKETS BY DEVOTION—HE’S BEGUN THIS DECADE AS THE CO-HEAD OF A MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR SITE BASED IN SIOUX FALLS, SPECIALIZING IN PROCURING A GOOD TIME FOR ITS PATRONS.

Like a Cadillac salesman with a Honda in the driveway, Brian made money advising strangers on ticket investments during the days he couldn’t afford a concert ticket. But in 10 years, Brian has transformed his resale expertise from posts on an archaic internet forum to a highly successful ticket purchasing site: Prairie Tickets. Self-coined “The Upper Midwest’s Ticket Marketplace,” Prairie Tickets’ last year earned $6.3 million in revenue and a spot on the Inc. 5000 list, a ranking of the country’s fastestgrowing private companies, making it one of only 13 South Dakota companies to do so.

“It’s a lot like the stock market, except your stocks are Mötley Crüe and Hozier and the Chicago Bears,” said Brian, an Aberdeen native. “It’s not Procter & Gamble. It’s Bassnectar.” Brian began his resale venture on a site called eventexperts.net—a page now lost to the archives of a younger internet. Users paid $20 a month for “expert” advice on tickets: which were in highest demand, which were overpriced or under-priced, and most importantly, which could turn a profit on a second sale.

Each month, the site’s users voted on the top three experts, who received reimbursement for their efforts. Soon, Brian, a student at the University of South Dakota with limited cash and an “obsession” with the ticket industry, brought in $1,200 a month without buying a ticket. “If I could go back and replay it, I never would have done it this way. I would’ve bought from the beginning,” said Brian. “But it ended up working to my advantage— this poor college kid can’t eat and all this other stuff. That’s the fun story.” The story continued after Brian graduated in 2010 and two years later married his wife, Courtney, who decided to help Brian with a soon-to-be business. In 2013, Prairie Tickets became a full-scale marketplace and has sold over $5 million in tickets. “Courtney is just as important in the business as I am,” said Brian. “She’s my boss, in fact.”

How Prairie Tickets Turns a Profit

What’s the difference bet ween Prairie Tickets and StubHub? “Nothing ,” said Brian. “It’s the same snowglobe of tickets.” In fact, the Opps use StubHub’s API data to view past and projected ticket sales. O Organically: Users purchase tickets directly through the site and pay a service fee. O Consignment: Users sell tickets on the website. They name their price, and if sold, Prairie Tickets takes a slice of the final sale.

The Opps could operate the enterprise anywhere, but their subtle presence in Sioux Falls has benefited the locale. In 2012, following the completion of the Denny Sanford Premier Center, Brian approached a city council undereducated in ticket resale and urged them to adopt laws used in Minneapolis and Omaha. They obliged—and now you won’t be hassled by scalpers within 200 feet of the arena.

maybe above everything else I saw an opportunity.”

Headquartered on Phillips Avenue in downtown Sioux Falls, three others assist the Opps with day-to-day tasks: responding to queries, checking marketplaces, repricing tickets, listening to Brian’s “dad jokes” (speaking of, Brian says 17-month-old Addyson Opp is not yet employed by the company). Before 2016, ticket marketplaces could use automated systems to purchase tickets the millisecond they went live. Equipped by man and mouse, Prairie Tickets kept afloat, but struggled to match the speed and spread of electronic bots. When President Obama signed the Better Online Ticket Sales (BOTS) Act into law in 2016, the Opps’ ethics produced prosperity. “All these guys that were using bots for a long period of time were like, ‘I don’t even know how to buy tickets without a bot.’ They were clueless,” said Brian. “When your competition was robots and now it’s every man for himself, it was a game changer. We were set up and ready to go because we never needed the damn things.” That’s where Brian believes the strength of his and Courtney’s business lies—the people. What started as a side hustle brought him a group he never wants to stray from. “I get a great sense of pride by having a great staff. By having a team and working with my wife,” said Brian. “It’s sappy or whatever, but I really do enjoy that. I don’t want to have another job for the rest of my life.”

First off, things happen so fast. And second off, this isn’t far from my home, so hallelujah. I brought some of the 605 crew with me on a Monday afternoon to check it out. When Kyle Determan and Yany Avelar walked in with me we all noticed it was a very intimate space. There are 25 tables, and it’s broken up into two areas. To the left is the sexy bar with bottles towering upon shelves with backlighting. We were seated in the walledoff area near the windows, which was perfect for natural light (something food photographers live for).

Everyone was super kind, and we discovered our menus were individual touchscreens. It was really neat, but I will admit it did make the process slower. You would have thought Kyle was a Baby Boomer and not in her mid 20s. “Uh oh, this must be expensive because they don’t even list the price,” she said. Fast forward almost 10 minutes (or what felt like 10 minutes) and she exclaimed, “Oh, wait! You click on the item and then a photo pops of it up of it with the price and information.” We nodded at each other, feeling impressed with ourselves for figuring out the technology. While we had a slow start as a team, the Tavern 180 staff started out strong by bringing out the Tavern Bubbles martini. This “red delight” is a blend of Three Olives Berry vodka, triple sec, lime juice, and strawberry purée with a sugar rim and dry ice. Let me tell you, I tried to put dry ice in a punch drink for my sister’s Star Trek bridal shower and it’s not as easy as it looks. The (impressive) bubbling and smoke lasted so long. We had taken photos of it, drank out of it, drank more out of it, put it on social media, drank more of it… You get the gist. “It’s still going strong,” Kyle said to Yany, who had started taking photos of the Lemon Lime Martini (a citrus version of the same drink) and the Sazerac. Now, the Sazerac shines in its own way. First off, it had an ice ball. Who doesn’t like an ice ball? Second off, it has Absinthe Rinse, Buffet Bourbon, Ice Sphere Simple Syrup, and Orange Bitters. I let out an Old West “ooooeeee” when I took a sip. “That will wake you up,” I said. Yany took a sip next and said, “This literally makes my hair grow. I love it.” Appetizers arrived, and we had the Jalapeño Bacon Brussels Sprouts and the Seared Ahi Tuna. Especially in the winter time, I could eat Brussels sprouts every day. These were halved Brussels sprouts, jalapeño bacon, balsamic reduction, and shaved parmesan. Did I mention balsamic reduction is also something I could consume every day? Also, shaved parmesan is everything. I should note the jalapeño wasn’t spicy at all, so if you’re a spicy lover that’s sad, but if you’re not that’s great news.

After nibbling on those, we moved on to the tuna. This had sesame seeds, wasabi, spicy remoulade, spring mix, citrus soy, tomatoes, red onion, and cucumbers. Kyle suddenly said, “They have wine pairings with each menu item!” She was still figuring out the touchscreen menu and was very excited about her discovery that, yes, you can look under the item to see what wines will go well with the dish. Back to the tuna. I feel bad, but not really, that I ate 80 percent of it before Yany could even get to it since she was taking photos. I dipped the tuna in all of the sauces. My mouth is legit watering thinking of this again. I didn’t even care that we had more in store, I just kept inhaling it. Entrées began to arrive, and we had the Mardi Gras Pasta, the Southwest Chicken Salad, and the Grilled Salmon. Because I’m terrible about eating salads, I tried that first.

This had grilled chicken, mixed greens, black beans, Tillamook cheddar and pepperjack cheese, cherry tomato pico de gallo, avocado, fried corn tortilla strips, and smoked jalapeño ranch. There were a lot of flavors, and everything was so fresh. I pointed out to the table, “The avocado was like a summer avocado, no? You know how during the winter avocados can be gross or kind of hard?” The table agreed, and we moved on to the salmon. The grilled hand-cut Canadian salmon was served with asparagus risotto, roasted red bell pepper relish, and lemon beurre blanc. “This is the most buttery asparagus,” said Yany with joy. The salmon melted, and the risotto was creamy goodness. At last we reached the pasta, and Phil Collins’ Take a Look at Me Now started playing. It was fate.

This dish had blackened shrimp, roasted chicken, andouille sausage, caramelized peppers and onions, all over penne pasta with a Cajun alfredo sauce. “Oh my god, obsessed,” said Yany. She loves spice, and Kyle and I were chugging water in between bites because we apparently are weak. “That definitely has some heat,” said Kyle. “I might need to order some milk.” I kept making spicy reaction noises (in a good way), and Yany said, “Are you guys serious? It’s not even spicy.” Perhaps we were the Three Bears of spices. Either way it was “just right” to nearly clean the plate. And then Warm Butter Cake came out. It was served with raspberry sauce, mixed berries, and vanilla ice cream. We had consumed so much, but we still devoured it. It didn’t have a chance.

BOTTOM LINE: Tavern 180 is not only a great new addition to Sioux Falls for quality food, but the cocktails are so legit. Not only are they made for social media, but they taste delicious, too. There are so many things I want to taste next, but you know I’ll order some Ahi Tuna to start.

It’s a small bar and restaurant, and I think that’s a smart choice. Fill it up and let people enjoy the sexy ambiance. Don’t get me wrong, though, it’s not too sexy. There’s a Kid’s Menu, and it’s a place you can take the family.

You’re paying for the quality, so dishes like the tuna are $18, and an eight-ounce version of the salmon is $28. It’s very justified and is worth every penny.

The Ahi Tuna is everything! And, honestly, each menu item we tried was great. I would even eat that salad, and I haven’t seen that nice of an avocado since July. Bravo to that.

rika Boen was a stay-at-home mom of five when she started looking for a creative outlet to call her own. The former real estate agent had made a handful of mini tents for her kids to camp in by the Christmas tree one year, and she says between a friend asking to borrow the tents and seeing the wonder on her kids’ faces that night, Wild Child Slumber Adventures (WCSA) was born.

“I just kept making more tents,” said Boen. “My friend suggested turning it into a business, and through word of mouth that’s what happened.”

The custom slumber party business officially launched in January of 2018, and has been creating personalized sleepover creations for birthday parties, outdoor parties, bachelorette parties, and everything in between for customers in Sioux Falls and the surrounding area ever since. Boen and her team book parties via their website, which lays out a variety of packages and add-ons that range from the standard party package to a 16-foot outdoor tent rental option. Add-ons include a movie projector for showing movies on the side of a house or tent, a photo booth, personalized party cups or pillow cases, and a disco light.

“One of my most memorable ones was an Army-themed outdoor party a mom threw for her sons,” said Boen. “We got a bunch of stuff from the Army surplus store, including military hats and tons of camo. The boys were so excited when they saw it, they immediately started playing.” Boen says her favorite part of running her business is the moment when a kid, or even adult customer, sees the setup for the first time.

“I love to be there when people first see it,” she said. “They’re just blown away by how elaborate everything is. If I can’t be there for some reason, I love seeing videos of their reaction.” In the future, Boen says she would love to go back to where WCSA first began: creating Christmas-themed tents that families can use to start new traditions around the Christmas tree. Growing their adult parties is also a goal for the company, as is expanding the use of its outdoor tents to include floor seating with tables.

“My kids beg for a tent party,” said Boen. “At our house in the summer we love to take a projector and watch a movie on an inflatable movie screen. We invite the neighbors over, have popcorn—it’s a blast. Really, that’s where this whole thing started, making memories and having fun with my six wild children.”

MEET THE Creative RANDY CHRISTENSEN Author

Back in 1876, it’s alleged that Deadwood had little to no cats. “One of my favorite stories from my classes and lectures has been the true tale of Phatty Thompson’s cat,” said author Randy Christensen. “It is well documented on page one of the June 8, 1876, Deadwood Pioneer Times.” According to Christensen, who has acted as a resident historian at Saloon No. 10 and has taught history classes, not many cats were brought into the gold camp. “Due to the lack of cats, the mice in Deadwood truly enjoyed a low-stress, practically cat-free lifestyle,” he said. “It was a mousy Old West paradise. But, the good citizens soon got tired of the overpopulation of mice, which were gobbling up their grain, chewing holes in their canvas tents and roofs, plus, angering the clientele of the local businesses.” That’s when Christensen said the citizens of Deadwood sent a “muleskinner” named Phatty (Plateaus) Thompson to Cheyenne, Wyo. to collect stray cats and transport them back. “The more I thought about this quirky tale, the more I thought that this would make a great basis for a children’s story,” said Christensen. Cue Charlie Klinker the Lil’ Stinker: A Tale of a Pioneer Mouse. 605 caught up with the artist, who is also a director, musician, poet, and counselor.

The Black Hills are covered with hundreds of county and forestry roads which lead you to mountains to climb, trails to follow, beautiful pristine streams, abandoned “old-timey” cabins, old gold mines, ghost towns, and much, much more!

books focusing on the early Black Hills, Dakota Territory, the gold rush days of Deadwood, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, and the plethora of fascinating characters of the period. My home library is filled with hundreds of wonderful, historical books and I continue to find many more each year to satisfy my hunger for the excitement of the Old West.

ANOTHER PROJECT I’M WORKING ON IS… I just finished

writing the second and third book in the “Klinker” series. They are entitled, Charlie Klinker the Lil’ Stinker: The Revenge of Phatty’s Cats and Charlie Klinker the Lil’ Stinker: A Pinch of Deadwood Christmas. I will be spending the winter months working with the illustrator, then hopefully getting them published.

I was that person.

“No one cares,” I would mumble as I scrolled through social media and saw photos of people’s kids. It was concerning how enraged I would get when I would post about something I did professionally and receive 48 likes, and someone would post, “Mom and Dad’s night out,” and get 343 likes.

I was wrong. It was super positive again. I ran downstairs and chucked the test at John as he was eating a snack on the couch, and I knocked his plate over.

I didn’t get it.

He looked and started giggling with shock and joy. I was not so much. I was always 50/50 if I wanted children. That night I sadly gave my first performance of drinking juice out of a wine glass.

Fast forward to one of my 50 apps on my phone notifying me that I hadn’t marked that I got my period yet. It was then that I realized I was two weeks late. My husband, John, and I were a few hours away from a wine tasting dinner, and just in case, I took a pregnancy test. I barely pulled the stick away and it was positive. I felt all of the blood f lush from my face, and I ran to chug water and to take my backup test. There was no way.

The first couple of weeks I saw more images of children on social media and noticed more ads with babies. I felt frantic. This was going to be my life? Once my pregnancy was out in the open, everyone had the usual two cents. If one more person told me to enjoy sleep while I could, I was going to throw something through a window.

I would legit ask my friends if they wanted me to babysit in the past and everyone would awkwardly laugh and change the subject. Kyle Determan, my co-worker and the normal author of this column, automatically began taking care of me and made sure I was okay. She’s almost 10 years younger than me, but she became my mentor in so many different ways. I told her all of my terrifyingly real dreams (so vivid when you’re pregnant). She gave me her pregnancy jeans and the cutest jumpsuit that made me feel like a person again. She cheered me up and laughed with me when I told her about weird smells or pains, and she would check in the second I would walk out of my appointments at Sanford Women’s to see how they went.

A month into my pregnancy I found out my friend Molly Kreutzfeldt was also expecting. I didn’t realize how lucky I was at the time. You see, to be honest, we were bar friends first. We had also played soccer and hung out professionally at events like South Dakota Advertising Federation luncheons. Our normal was talking about work at happy hour (that sometimes went until later in the evening). Our new normal was meeting at bars/restaurants for its daily lunch specials and talking about how we couldn’t sleep and how much we missed being social, and would guess what was going to happen the next step of pregnancy and at birth (the most terrifying of the scenarios). We counted down by the hour when we would finally

have our babies, and, most importantly, we were there when the other one needed to have a good laugh or cry. We still talk every day, and I don’t know what I could have done without her. With my pregnancy, I finally started to get it. It wasn’t necessarily all about having a child (but I soon found out how incredible that was and felt). It was about supporting each other and showing how much we all care for one another, whether it was toward each other or to their unborn baby. I was f labbergasted when my friends and people in the community were sending me cards, giving me really personal gifts, and were all genuinely so excited for us to add to our family. People I barely talked to or hadn’t spoken to in years reconnected with me.

And one unexpected relationship I’ll never forget came from the day of my birth. July 29, 2019 my water broke as I was on the phone trying to schedule being induced (I was more than a week overdue). I waddled into The Birth Place in Sanford Health where I checked in. It’s there that I met Hannah Sammons, a certified nurse-midwife. What I didn’t know (among many things) was that you get the midwife on call when you go into labor if you have a midwife for your pregnancy journey (ugh, old me would never say pregnancy journey). She walked in and it was like I had known Hannah my whole life. We were joking around about things like feeling contractions in my butt (legit, something else I didn’t know was a thing). She made me feel safe, and at

the same time, made me feel like I had a friend there who had amazing healthcare skills and even better calming skills. When it was time for her shift to end and I hadn’t given birth yet, I actually felt sad. “I’ll be back at 7 a.m. tomorrow, but hopefully Baby will be out by then.” Baby was not out by then. I was in labor for almost 24 hours and then had to wave the white f lag and have a c-section. Turns out I did see Hannah again, and she was the one to tell me this as she started her morning shift. I could tell by her eyes that she could see how sad and disappointed I was, but she made me feel okay about things not going as planned, even after all of the pain and long hours of labor.

Some Midwife Myths

“Midwives only do home birth.” Only five percent of certified nurse midwives in the U.S. currently attend home births. You will most often find them in a hospital working alongside a team of OB/GYNs and Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists.

“Midwives won’t let you have an epidural.” We support all styles of labor pain management, from water birth to epidural.

+

“Midwives only focus on pregnancy and birth.” A CNM also sees patients for annual visits, PAP smears, birth control counseling, STI screening, and anything else related to gynecologic or reproductive health.

“A Midwife is the same thing as a doula.” While they work side by side with doulas to support patients in labor, their roles differ. A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous emotional and physical support to women in labor, whereas a CNM has received their Masters or Doctorate degree specializing in Midwifery.

Everything after that was a blur. I met my baby, Owen, soon after and was moved upstairs. My focus for the next 24 hours was trying to mend and spend time with our new baby (and then try to figure out what we were actually doing). The following day I was in bed, feeling feelings because I was so sore and John was running an errand, and Hannah walked in. I could feel my eyes well up, and she sat on the end of the bed and checked on me. It meant so much to have her talk through with me how I was doing, what the experience was like for me, and then mentioned how she watched Harry Potter during one of her last breaks (which was a nice break from talking about birth and the baby for a second). After all of that we went in for a hug, and it was such a nice bookend to the labor and delivery. What I’m trying to get at is that this whole ordeal was a gift I didn’t realize I needed. It woke me up to how incredible humans are, and it was a great reminder that we all do care about each other and can be really, truly kind to one another. It also gave me my favorite human, Owen. There, I said it. Look who joined the club. And don’t worry, it’s on social media, too.+

Kolb “I craved a space that would pay homage to this, and bring inspiration and community to those who may not have that built-in support.” That’s why she started the ambitious and welcoming business, The Kitchen—a co-working and community space catering to women to help advance each other in business, community, and family. After crowdfunding and finding the first group of founding members, The Kitchen has just finalized a lease on its location on South Racket Drive in Sioux Falls. Construction has begun and there are plans to open this month. “The space is perfect for business owners, remote workers, corporate employees, stayat-home moms, non-profit owners, or anyone who hopes to expand their circle,” said Kolb.

5 QUESTIONS WITH KOLB WHAT IS A GOOD BOOK YOU’VE READ LATELY AND WHY DID YOU ENJOY IT?

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PODCASTS AND WHY?

I’m currently reading Feminist Fight Club by Jessica Bennett. It’s a tactical how-to guise of fighting sexist behavior in the workplace. I think it’s important for men and women to read something like this book to understand how we can do better to have equality in our work spaces.

There are a few local ladies who are putting out great content—Maddie Peschong, Carla White, and Chelsea Giedd all have shows that are fun and tactical. It’s a prerequisite of my podcast listening that I learn something that I can apply to my daily life. I also listen to a show called The Double Shift that covers a variety of topics that affect working mothers, and the ways that our current systems have failed to support them.

WHERE IS YOUR HAPPY PLACE?

Since I was little I’ve been the happiest when I’m out camping in the Black Hills. That hasn’t changed for me at all, and now I get to experience the joy through my kids, as well. It’s a magical place to me, better than Disney World. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP PLACES TO EAT LOCALLY OR STATEWIDE, AND WHAT DO YOU ORDER?

My all time favorite is Pho Quyhn and it’s become a bit of a Sunday tradition for my boyfriend and me. The Rice Vermicilli Bowl with grilled pork is a dish I literally dream about. You can also find us at TapHouse 41 or T.C.’s Referee, as they both have some of the best wings in town.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO START A BUSINESS?

I would advise that you get yourself a core group of supporters early on-people you can go to when you’re having a hard time. Starting a business is a really emotional and messy process, and you need to have a team that you absolutely trust to help steer you in the right direction. I love to chat with women who are in this phase of their life, so I also advise that they reach out to me for a coffee date!
