LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Alana Snyder PUBLISHER Alana Snyder DIRECTOR OF SALES AND MARKETING John Snyder MULTIMEDIA DESIGNERS Yany Avelar Tyson Schultz EDITORIAL ASSISTANT Kyle Determan ACCOUNT MANAGER Taylor Hanson PUBLISHING COPY EDITOR Kristal Seeden CONTRIBUTORS Andrea Van Essen Kaylyn Deiter Nick Hubbard CIRCULATION Taija Crawford

Summer is almost officially here! May was rough, with rain pouring down on one half of the state and snow being relentless on the other. It's time to treat ourselves to outdoor music events, like the 605 Summer Classic. That's right, this is the annual issue where we self promote our events, like the Classic (June 21 and 22 at Cherapa Place in downtown Sioux Falls) and 605 Day (June 5 at Main Street Square in Rapid City and at Fernson Downtown in Sioux Falls).

Annie Fuss Austin Kaus Chad Konrad Coralie Richards Cameron Stalheim Brad Zimmerman PRINTER Publication Printers Corp. 2001 S. Platte River Dr, Denver, CO 80223 ADVERTISING INQUIRIES

Another (huge) announcement is that 605 is partnering with Fernson Brewing Company and Lost Cabin Beer Co. for the first-ever 605 Magazine Summer Issue hazy honey ale. This will be available this month at 605's events and at limited locations, like the Fernson and Lost Cabin taprooms.

Taylor Hanson

Along with all of our exciting things going on, the state is packed with events and activities, like Wild Deadwood Reads, Sioux Falls Pride, Yankton Ribfest, and more.

300 N. Cherapa Place, Suite 504

So mark your calendars, everyone, because you've got places to be! Like the 605 Summer Classic! What, did you think I wasn't going to self promote one more time?

Since it’s (finally) time for warm weather, you can typically see me riding my motorcycle all around town.

There are so many options and activities all year long and things to try, it seems like it's different every time.

When it’s not so nice out, or to mix things up, my kids love going to Air Madness in Harrisburg. Along with all of the trampolines and courses, some might not know that they also have Laser Madness.

The Rehnkes have become a bit of a Marvel movie family. We just went and saw Avengers: Endgame at Century Theaters after watching the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe movie series all in a row. We love going to the movies either at Century Theaters or West Mall 7, and we're looking forward to the next chapter Marvel brings us!

Speaking of warmer weather, though, I also am obsessed with B&G Milkyway on 69th and Louise. DiAnn is the best! I also really enjoy dining and being downtown. The vibe is unlike any other!

The first stop was LA Style right on the highway next to Dollar General. Owner Melissa Adee was inside with her baby and was getting ready to pick up her other children from school. LA Style (named after her initials for “Lissa Adee”) started in 2014 as a way for the entrepreneur to keep busy while being a stay-at-home mom. “I’m not really one to not be busy, so I needed something that allowed me to have my outlet plus raise the kids,” she said. “This started in our house in our basement.” The storefront (which does not have the address listed on its website or Facebook) is open twice a week on Thursdays from 4-8 p.m. and on Saturdays 9 a.m. 1 p.m. The rest of the business is primarily online. “We have something for babies, younger girls, teenagers, and

2 4 \\\\\\\\\ J U N E

women of all ages. Since we’re a small community we try to hit all of the age levels,” said Adee. LA Style also has gifts and carries a lot of local vendors, including Hello Larsons Coffee Roastery and SWdesign out of Brookings, and Brick House Creations of Sioux Falls. “For fashion, I tend to buy what I wear, basically,” said Adee. “It’s very casual, nothing too crazy, and the price point is pretty affordable.” Shoppers can follow LA Style on social media and join its texting club for the latest. “I say this all of the time, but this is my dream come true,” said Adee. “I never imagined it would turn into this.”

In the Business District just down on Kasan Avenue is CC Bar & Grill. The modern restaurant has flat screens showing the latest sporting events and is known for its chislic. When we asked owner Cade Cradduck why his version of the state’s nosh stands out, he replied, “It’s a secret.” They’re also known for “fresh handpattied burgers daily” and are a family-friendly establishment. “I would definitely recommend the CC Burger or the Taco Salad,” said Cradduck. Prime rib is served on weekends and in the wintertime. He says they also play around with weekly specials, and if it’s popular enough, they’ll add it to the menu. Along with having events like karaoke periodically, CC Bar & Grill has an outdoor patio with bean bag boards to enjoy the nice weather. On and off sale beer, wine, and liquor is available. After grabbing a few bites of chislic, I dipped out to get to my last stop, the Lucky Dog Bar & Grill.

Christenson says they see a lot of visitors driving through to Schade or on their way to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. “They’ll stop on by for a photo outside of our place and we’ll always invite them in and get them koozies,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun.”•

LUCKY FOR YOU, THERE’S NOTHING TO DO HERE.

In Nebraska, we believe that only boring people get bored. So we invent our own fun. Like when we realized that a livestock tank would float, and thought, “It’s a boat.” Soon, “tanking” became the preferred method of meandering down our slow-moving rivers. It might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but if it sounds as good to you as it did to us, go to VisitNebraska.com for a free Travel Guide. And welcome aboard.

Then Lost Cabin came in. The two breweries had been wanting to work together for a while, Lost Cabin’s co-owner Jesse Scheitler says, but being on opposite sides of the state that partnership just hadn’t happened. The 605 Summer Issue gave the two the perfect excuse to pair their brewing styles.

“The [605] Summer Classic [Festival] & Beer Tasting has a growing presence and is doing some awesome things for the state,” said Fernson’s marketing director Evan Richards. “We wanted to get things kicked off right for the event, and the idea of a special-release batch for the Classic and 605 Day seemed like a really cool idea.”

//////////////////////////////////////

The idea stemmed from a sponsorship meeting for the Classic between the magazine’s advertising team and Fernson. With the Classic’s All-South Dakota Beer Tasting on June 22 serving as a big draw for the event, the conversation naturally turned to beer, and over the course of the meeting the idea for a collaborative summer brew was born.

“It’s a different mindset for the brewing process when you use ingredients outside of the typical beer ingredients, like honey. It really puts the emphasis on what breweries can create.” Evan Richards 3 4 \\\\\\\\\ J U N E

“The industry is very collaborative,” said Scheitler. “We were excited to have this awesome reason to work together.”

"

“It was awesome to brew with the Fernson guys. It’s just this picture of the whole beer industry working together, and it was a super natural fit for all of us.” Jesse Scheitler

Once the idea was set into motion, the two breweries got together in Sioux Falls to begin the brewing process. Both Lost Cabin and Fernson knew they wanted this beer to be light and summery− something that people would want to drink on a boat while hanging out with friends, or after mowing the yard, Scheitler says− but they also wanted something uniquely South Dakota to set it apart. The breweries decided that missing element was honey—specifically honey from South Dakotaraised honeybees. “South Dakota is one of the biggest honey producers in the U.S.,” said Richards, “and the honeybee is our state insect. It just felt like a natural fit to us and something that would really make this a South Dakota beer.” The two breweries tapped an apiary outside Sioux Falls for 100 pounds of honey and got to brewing. Richards says the actual beer-making process takes a few weeks, all the way from malting and fermentation to canning and distribution. When everything is finished, Lost Cabin and Fernson will put the 1,000 gallons of the 605 Summer Issue produced into cans and kegs for 605 Day, the Classic, and limited-distribution in their own taprooms and stores, like Hy-Vee. “When it’s done, our hope is that this beer just screams summertime,” said Scheitler. “It’s a pale ale, but it’s going to be pretty aggressive with the dry hopping we do. There’s going to be berry and citrus notes, and then that honey character will really come out in the final product.” For Richards, the beer is not only a representation of the growing craft beer presence in the state, but it’s also a celebration of South Dakota itself.

ORDER PINS AT QUEENONTHE SCENE.COM.

Q

UINN KATHNER HAS QUITE THE BUSY SCHEDULE. NOT ONLY IS SHE INVOLVED IN MARKETING FULL TIME, SHE IS ALSO THE PRESIDENT OF SIOUX FALLS PRIDE AND IS THE CREATOR AND OWNER OF QUEEN ON THE SCENE—BEST KNOWN FOR “INAPPROPRIATELY AWESOME” PINS. 605 CHATTED WITH THE “PROUD VOLUN(QUEER)” ABOUT THIS YEAR’S PRIDE EVENTS (HAPPENING JUNE 10-16), WHAT INSPIRES HER LATEST DESIGNS, AND HER DRAG KING NAME.

3 8 \\\\\\\\\ J U N E

YOU MIGHT KNOW ME FROM… my drag king persona, Maddix Wild.

MY LOVE FOR DESIGN STARTED… in high school when the birth of the red/blue color combo was born in HTML. I felt the need to beautify.

I STARTED MAKING PINS WHEN… the crushing desire to make LGBT-focused designs (by LGBT) wouldn’t go away. It was my goal to represent unfiltered honesty through my designs. The best feeling is when I see someone wearing one of my designs in public and having a mini meltdown in the best way.

MY INSPIRATIONS FOR PINS… just come to me! So far, they’ve been from my fellow

drag kings, my love of the word f---, and my LGBT community.

A PORTION OF PIN PROCEEDS GOES TOWARD THE MAX AND HUGH FUND, WHICH IS… a cause I couldn’t stand still for. The day after Thanksgiving in 2018, two of our drag king brothers were in a horrific accident. Today, while they're on the road to recovery, Queen On The Scene donates 50 percent of proceeds directly to our brothers’ recovery.

“It fills my soul knowing that our LGBTQA+ community members have a home.”

I FIRST WAS INVOLVED IN SIOUX FALLS PRIDE… the day after the 2016 presidential election and refused to sit on the sidelines. I was done. Focused. Ready. Impactful change in our community occurs at a local level. Be the change. You get one spin on this Earth—make it count.

THE FIRST YEAR AS PRESIDENT OF SIOUX FALLS PRIDE HAS BEEN… amazing! The vibe of the committee and board members has been very positive, allowing us to work together to add new events, form new business partnerships, and continue building a community of inclusion.

WHAT I’M EXCITED ABOUT THIS YEAR’S PRIDE IS… that I’ll get to celebrate with everyone! I’m beyond ecstatic for the first-ever Pride Parade in downtown Sioux Falls that is happening before all of the Sioux Falls Pride festivities begin at Terrace Park.

SINCE I FIRST STARTED WITH PRIDE... Sioux Falls businesses continue to make the LGBTQA+ community proud by showing their support. Businesses who support Sioux Falls Pride help fund youth scholarships and community events, which foster inclusion and so much more.

WHEN I’M NOT WORKING ON THE EVENTS... I’m listening. I pay attention to the tone surrounding the community and/or any discrimination issues coming to the surface.

Menu CAFÉ COTEAU The Children’s Museum of South Dakota in Brookings is all about promoting learning for children of all ages and abilities through interactive, hands-on exhibits and programming. People travel from all over to see things like the Cloud Climber and Tangle Town, but did you know they also come for its restaurant, Café Coteau? 4 2 \\\\\\\\\ J U N E

The eatery is known for using “always fresh ingredients,” and director and manager of Café Coteau, Pouran Borchardt, is very proud of that. “People come in and see the menu and are blown away by the quality and range,” she said. “They expect a museum to have things like hot dogs and burgers.” One of their most popular items is the Spinach Dill Noodles. It has fresh spinach leaves, dill, green onion, tomatoes, and house specialty Alfredo sauce tossed in fettuccine noodles. Chicken can be added, and the café’s meat is always fresh as well.

“Our chicken has never been frozen and is always high quality,” said Borchardt. “Our salad is the same way. When Brookings Farmers Market opens up we get a lot of our produce from them. Our eggs are cage free and are grown right in our surrounding area.” Another best-selling item (and a great example of farmers market ingredients) is the House Specialty Salad. It includes romaine lettuce, avocados, tomatoes, cucumbers, Kalamata olives, walnuts, feta cheese, red onion, and eggs served with fresh mozzarella, and choice of dressing. Because of its growing reputation for natural ingredients, Borchardt says they wanted to get more into gluten-free options. The café had been outsourcing desserts and select items previously, but they brought in someone to bake in house. “I have a woman who comes here to do our baking and she has her own kitchen where she can produce anything we want,” she said. “She can do pizza crust, bread, pretty much anything we want her to do. Our biggest sellers are Caramel Rolls, cookies, and muffins.” Patrons can also do special orders for items like cakes. Along with food items, Café Coteau is known for coffee drinks. A favorite is the Café Glacé. “It’s essentially coffee with ice cream,” said Borchardt. For those who enjoy the museum’s menu, special dinners are hosted three to four times a year, complete with a white tablecloth and authentic Middle Eastern cuisine. Borchardt said, “Sometimes [attendees] don’t even know what they’re getting, but they’re excited to try it.” Dinners are by reservation only and are promoted in the café and on the Children’s Museum of South Dakota’s Facebook.

SAMMY ADAMS S AMMY ADAMS

“I’m excited to come back to South Dakota because I’ve always got a lot of love in S.D., and I’m pumped to play new music.” - Sammy Adams

BY ANDREA VAN ESSEN On June 21 and 22, Cherapa Place in downtown Sioux Falls will buzz with festival-goers, musical artists, and, of course, the All-South Dakota Beer Tasting. Twenty-nineteen marks the 10th anniversary of the 605 Summer Classic Beer & Musical Festival, a two-day outdoor event centered around bringing quality music to a local stage and celebrating South Dakota beer. Organized and hosted by

605 Magazine, the Classic features a lineup of 10 different artists over two days. Some are local to South Dakota, while others will be traveling from as far as Minneapolis, Boston, Montreal, and even Belgium. Headliners Dabin (Friday) and Sammy Adams (Saturday) will each bring something unique to the stage. Dabin, a Toronto native now living in Montreal, performs a variety of live guitar and electronic music. He

recently finished touring the U.S. and Canada with his latest album, Wild Youth.

Adams says he’s stoked to perform in Sioux Falls again, and he believes his music can appeal to anyone.

Adams hails from Boston and began making hits at a young age, back in the late 2000s. His style is most often described as hip-hop, but he takes inspiration from a variety of artists, including jazz and blues musicians like Duke Ellington and Professor Longhair.

“The amazing part about music is its ability to bring people together,” said Adams. “No matter where you’re from, your ethnicity, your background, I just want to make you forget about the world for the 30-45 minutes I’m on stage.”

In addition to the headliners, 605 has gathered regional and local artists to perform throughout the event. Friday’s lineup includes Pete Freely, Park States, Unlimited Gravity, and Taska Black, and Saturday brings Elisabeth Hunstad, Mark Mallman, Soleil Bashale, and ProbCause to the stage. John Snyder, 605’s director of sales and marketing, says finding a variety of current, relevant music is key when it comes to choosing talent for the Classic. While acts aren’t always widely known, Snyder says festival-goers are often willing to take a chance on the talent for the Classic’s low ticket cost of just $10 for one day or $15 for a weekend pass.

But don’t forget, it’s not just about the music. From 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, attendees can enjoy the All-South Dakota Beer Tasting. South Dakota breweries will each be serving up one or two different brews for people to taste. Attendees will be able to vote for the People’s Choice Award. (Last year, the winner was Lost Cabin Beer Co.) For an additional $20, attendees can purchase an unlimited beer tasting wristband to go along with the day pass. If you’re planning to attend both days, a Gold Pass includes two-day admission and unlimited tasting for $35.

605 will be selling limited numbers of the 605 Magazine Summer Issue beer at the 605 Summer Classic. More on the Fernson Brewing Company and Lost Cabin Beer Co. collaboration on page 32.

Mark MARKmallman MALLMAN “We try to provide good value on both sides, for attendees and the artists,” said Snyder. “One of the most common things we hear from attendees is, ‘I’m so glad I came, I’m never missing one again.’” One of the artists Snyder is most excited for is Mark Mallman, a Minneapolis artist performing on Saturday. “We saw him randomly about eleven months ago at Bigs Bar and we were just blown away,”

said Snyder. “We knew we wanted to hire him. He has an incredibly distinct voice and jumps up on his chair and keyboard. He just has that extra something. It’s not just a song, it's a performance.” When asked about his style, Mallman says it can best be described as “piano rock.” “I turn the past on its head,” he said. “I take what ‘70s music established and rebuild it for the 21st century. It's a treat to be able to delight an audience.”

On the local side of things, Park States, Bashale, Freely, and Hunstad all make their home in South Dakota. Bashale, a Sioux Falls native, says he’s looking forward to his first major hometown show. “It’s the feeling of seeing people I know but who haven’t been able to see me perform, seeing them in the crowd,” he said. According to Snyder, providing a positive stage experience for local artists is one of the Classic’s top goals. “We’re bringing top-tier sound, stage, and lighting, and really raising that presence for the acts that we bring in,” he said. In addition to music and beer, the Classic’s sponsors will have booths set up to engage with the crowd (and possibly hand out some cool freebies). 605 partners with a local nonprofit each year to help raise awareness and offer a donation. Most recently, this was with the former JAM Art & Supplies, but since its closing, 605 has chosen to partner with Almost Home Canine Rescue. Tickets for the Classic are available for purchase online and at the door. An after party at Wiley's Tavern will take place after the headliner both nights.

A ROOM WITH A VIEW As if the location of the home wasn’t enough of a draw, the fact that you can see Lewis and Clark Lake from almost every room definitely helps. The siblings decided early on to utilize an open concept design, carrying it throughout the kitchen, living room, and basement. “One thing we did differently is put in full windows instead of top cabinets,” said Groetken. “This view is just too good to miss, and half the time you can’t reach your top cabinets anyway, so we thought a panoramic view would be better.” The open kitchen connects to the dining area, as well as the living room. Both areas have a clean and simple feel, with a mix between beach bungalow and farmhouse visible in the décor. “This was a passion of all of ours. We all worked really hard to bring all of our styles together,” explained Groetken. Not only do the upstairs areas flow into each other, but there is an abundance of various seating areas, from the kitchen to the living room to the outdoor patio. “Everything was made with our entire family in mind. We know there are a lot of families that need a place with a lot of space, so that was important to us,” she said.

LOWER LEVEL LUXURY The stairs lead to a spacious living area in the basement, combining plush furniture, a wet bar, and plenty of space to hang out. “Dad wanted to make sure we had a pool table, so that was a must,” smiled Groetken. Besides the game area and the media room, Groetken pointed out a bookshelf that doubles as a secret door, leading to a kid’s hideout next to the stairs. “We wanted the kiddos to have a space of their own, that was different and fun. We decided on an Alice in Wonderland theme, and that definitely goes with it,” she said. The rest of the basement houses three more bedrooms, a bathroom, and multiple exits to the lower patio area. “The rooms down here are like cozy little sanctuaries. They are perfect for people that like their privacy, but still want access to the view," said Groetken. "It really is about having a space for everyone.”

ORIGINAL BREWS &

BY KAYLYN DEITER PHOTOS BY HUBBARD VISUALS

I

T’S EASY TO ASSUME THAT SAWYER BREWING CO. IS NAMED AFTER A PERSON. BUT WHILE SPEARFISH’S NEWEST BREWING COMPANY IS OWNED AND RUN BY ONE COUPLE—LEE AND ALI EDDY—THE NAME CARRIES THE WEIGHT OF FOUR GENERATIONS, ALL LOGGERS, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS SAWYERS. “No, it’s not anyone’s name,” said Lee. “I wanted to go with something I liked, and Spearfish still has a sawmill. It also points to the forestry industry in the Black Hills.” The rest of the story can be found on the brewery’s website, where Lee outlined how each generation, from Grandpa Mack and Grandpa Eddy, all the way down to his dad and him, have had a hand in the logging industry. Lee worked on the trucking and construction side of logging prior to opening Sawyer Brewing Co. last December, saying running the brewery has definitely been a change of pace. “Having a brewery is totally different from what I did prior to this,” he said. “I’ve never owned my own business or had other employees, but I can’t complain.” Like many brewery owners before him, Lee started out in the beer brewing world by experimenting with home brewing, hosting parties for friends, and trying out different techniques. Those parties were also where the Eddys first tested their wood-fired pizzas on a wider audience, deciding to add pizza to Sawyer’s menu as a complement to the brews.

“Pizza and beer was kind of the idea behind what we wanted to do,” said Lee. “I tried out brewing and just really enjoyed it. I’m more about the process behind the brewing than the science of it, but I just really like seeing what we can come up with.” Though the brewery’s only been open since the winter, Lee hasn’t wasted any time in establishing Sawyer in the Spearfish community. A rotating menu of 11 beers characterizes the brewery’s drink offerings, and while some staples will remain, Lee hopes to switch things up on the tap menu every so often.

Pizza, on the other hand, stays simple, he says. Customers won’t have to look hard to find a Margherita or All Meat pizza, but signature creations like the Potato and Popper also dot the menu. While creating the menu was one thing, according to Lee, crafting Sawyer’s space was totally another. “The development we chose was totally new at the time, so construction was definitely interesting,” he said. “We wanted an atmosphere with lots of wood and iron work to get that cozy taproom feel.”

No TVs hang in Sawyer’s taproom, which Lee says was done on purpose. “We wanted there to be a lot of conversation going on and for people to really take things in and enjoy it,” he said. The brewery also has a patio looking out on nearby Spearfish Creek, a space Lee hopes will see its best days as the weather turns warmer. “Spearfish is definitely a destination spot,” he said. “People come to the Hills from a five-state region, so we’re excited to start introducing more people to our beer this summer.” Along with participating in a number of beer festivals and hosting Sawyer's own events in the coming months, Lee says he hopes to start distributing small batches of beer locally, establishing relationships with other brewery owners while still focusing on diversifying the Sawyer taproom. “The best part of running the brewery is just having people come in and enjoy the space and what we have to offer,” he said. “That, and the compliments we get on the pizza and beer.”

light buzzing about a woodfired rotisserie restaurant opening in southwestern Sioux Falls got to our office. After checking out the (very nice) website, I was surprised it was at the Empire Mall in the former Rookies Sports Bar & Grill location.

8 4 \\\\\\\\\ J U N E

Let’s be honest. That location connected to The District hasn’t been the luckiest thus far for bars and restaurants, so I was a bit skeptical. Again, though, after seeing the branding and website, I had high hopes. Co-owner and chief operating officer John Sheehan (other owner is Lynn Reimer) greeted 605’s Yany Avelar and me by the fireplace at the entrance and asked if he could give us a quick tour. Now I’ve been pretty up front that I love a good theme. I appreciate when a new place opens and it’s not a cookie-cutter concrete box with a bar in the middle and minimal décor (with a chunk of said minimal décor being beer distributing signs).

There are around six rooms/areas to choose from for dining, and we got to sit in one of the more private rooms called the Rickhouse. This was designed after a rickhouse, which is a whiskey aging warehouse where barrels are stored. Whiskey and bourbon are also a loose theme of ROAM. Framed images in the space are actual photos of rickhouses the owners have been to, and barrels are stacked above near the ceiling to give the full effect. Our server arrived and gave us menus. There were a variety of different options, like unique sausage boards, mussels, and campfire-themed dishes like the Chicken Corn Chowder, which we ordered a bowl of. It reminded us a little of tortilla soup, and smelled like it was going to be spicy, but was pretty mild. With the chicken, corn, bacon, and potatoes, it's filling, so make sure you’re hungry if you also want an entrée. We had to nibble on one of the ROAM Signature Sausages, so we went with the Chicken & Beer that had jalapeño mustard and potato salad. It came out on a cedar board, which was adorable. Yany took a bite and said, “This is actually pretty mellow, and I don’t normally like sausage.”

She was right, and I'm a mellow type of gal. Yany’s recommendation is to dip the sausage in the mustard, which I heard was great (mustard scares me). I'm a huge fan of potato salad, and this was dill deliciousness. Dill plus sausage plus more potato salad is a winning combo in my book.

Last, we tried the Bourbon Glazed Salmon. Holy smokes, this was the winner. The salmon was pan roasted with bourbon glaze, and was served with wild rice pilaf, spinach, and lemon butter sauce.

“The potato salad is bomb,” said Yany. She agreed! After seeing it spin in front of us the whole tour, and because it was such a part of the campfire theme, we ordered the Rotisserie Chicken. The signature chicken was dry rubbed and slow roasted on the woodfired rotisserie and came with a side of veggies. We went right for the breast, and whatever the dry rub was on the skin was salty and made me just want to eat pieces of skin alone. The vegetables were good, and Yany noted that the carrots were half cooked, half raw, and it worked. “I kind of dig it,” she said, eating a couple.

I want that sauce with everything. It made the whole meal so juicy and tender, and the salmon practically melted when we cut into it. Legit, I went to the bathroom and came back and Yany had finished it. “I finished it while you were gone. Sorry,” she said, as she happy-swayed to the country music playing in the restaurant. I feel like she wasn’t sorry.•

AT LEAST FOR ME, WHEN I THOUGHT OF BUSINESSES IN THIS SPACE PREVIOUSLY, I FELT LIKE I WOULD ONLY STOP BY FOR A BITE OR DRINK IF I WAS GOING TO A SHOW AT THE DISTRICT. ROAM IS SUCH A NEAT CONCEPT THAT I WOULD ACTUALLY THINK OF IT AS A PLACE TO MEET MY FRIENDS FOR CRAFT COCKTAILS OR FOR A NICE LUNCH OR DINNER. DARE I SAY, I WOULD ROAM OVER TO THE MALL FOR THIS?

Each room has its own feel, and I can see a lot of events and meetings happening there. And by meeting, I mean me making up an excuse to meet someone for a whiskey drink.

For the menu variety, it sticks mostly to the $15 and under range. Of course you have the Bone-In Beef Short Rib at $27.95, but, I mean, come on. Expect to pay craft cocktail prices if you want spirits, or order a Bud Light. Do you.

I enjoyed the different selections of food. There’s definitely a lot I need to go back and try. While I felt like the chicken could have used a little something like sauce, the salmon was perfection. I’m excited to order a burger or one of their salads (I heard the Smoked Grape is amazing) when I go back.

WHERE THE CHILD THINGS ARE:

BY KYLE DETERMAN

ABYSITTERS: THEY COME IN ALL VARIETIES. THERE ARE THE HIGH SCHOOL PROS THAT HAVE A CONSTANT ROTATION OF FAMILIES WHO PAY FOR THEIR JUICE STOP TRIPS AND COLLEGE SAVINGS ACCOUNTS. THEN THERE ARE THE OLDER VETS WHO HAVE EXTRA TIME TO FILL WITH BABY GIGGLES AND GAMES OF PATTYCAKE.

Being a retired nanny myself, I can remember sitting in my car, hyping myself up before meeting a new family. Picture the quickest, and generally loudest, interview you’ve ever had. Imagine my surprise when I felt (just) as nervous when looking for a babysitter. We started with family and close friends and still found it hard to be gone for more than an hour or two. So when 605’s publisher Alana Snyder suggested we try out Bambino, the babysitting app, I had an instant flashforward to me reenacting scenes from Taken while stifling a small panic attack. How could an app be as safe and reliable as word of mouth? People lie on the internet all the time, or at least that’s what Dateline has led me to believe.

After doing some research and hearing from other local moms about how much of a lifesaver it was, I decided to sign up and give it a go. The sign-up process was really simple, and honestly kind of fun. It was like making a Tinder profile to find Sloan the perfect babysitter match, while combining LinkedIn and PayPal.

What I've Learned O Not all babysitters will vibe with your little one. When using someone new, schedule a bit of time before you leave for everyone to get to know each other.

9 2 \\\\\\\\\ J U N E

O Writing down emergency contacts is a no-brainer, but don’t forget about including soothing techniques, rewards/ consequences, and “last-ditch efforts.” This will help both you and the sitter in the long run.

O If you wait for an excuse to have some "me time," or "us time," it will never happen. Scheduling a weekly date night, workout class, or Target run will validate the importance of taking time for other aspects of your life.

I was beyond nervous. I found myself pacing and rewriting the emergency numbers just to make sure they were legible. Let me tell you, you think you're a chill parent until you let a complete stranger into your home to babysit for a date night. I felt like I was stuck in this weird limbo between going full-on "mama bear" and desperately wanting to impress this random 19-year-old. Luckily, Sloan was instantly obsessed with said 19-year-old. She smiled at her right away, and after going through the basics, we were off. We contemplated spending our 2.5 hours at Target, and then we talked about finding somewhere to nap, and somehow we ended up at Thunder Road. The pre-sunset glow on the green turf brought us back to one of our very first dates. We were both living in Vermillion and were working way too hard to impress each other one mini-golf game at a time. But man, we were the definition of infatuated. Everything was new and exciting, which left us feeling hopeful for the future. It took us remembering this moment to realize that we have the ability to look at everything like we did on that date, even a

new babysitter. There will always be new things, some exciting and some, well, terrifying. That’s life—and the more I think about it the more I understand that it is my job to teach Sloan that new is nothing to be afraid of. All this time I spent worrying about a new babysitter should’ve been spent being excited to have a new resource, a new friend for Sloan, and new opportunities to learn as a parent. After playing an embarrassing 18 holes and stuffing our faces with wings, we made our way back to our babe, new outlook and all. She was asleep, our new babysitter said she was happy to come back, and we were left feeling content in our mini Bambino trial run. Embrace the new, embrace the change, and embrace good babysitters.•

EVERY TIME I GO OUT TO EAT WITH A CERTAIN FRIEND, SHE NEVER WANTS AN APPETIZER, BUT THEN PROCEEDS TO EAT 80 PERCENT OF ONE WHEN I ORDER IT. HOW DO I DEAL WITH THIS? JR: Guilty as charged. I love when my parents take me out to eat and order mozzarella sticks. It’s the best.
