This is a very exciting time for the 605 brand.

INTERN

This month we launch 605 Weddings, an annual special issue that features South Dakota real weddings, engagement stories, vendor articles, and more. This is available on 605 Magazine racks, at select wedding vendor locations, and through 605weddings.com.

Keeley Meier

We also launch the first ever 605 Best double issue. Our team gets to see a lot of unique places and meet all types of South Dakotans. We decided to curate a list of some of our favorites (with a few People's Choice winners) to celebrate the end of 2019 and to look ahead at 2020.

Chad Konrad

Creating this list made me realize how lucky we are to get to meet everyone that we have, and I look forward to meeting even more of you in the years to come. I also can't wait to hear about new businesses and learn more about the old. So first and foremost, thank you. Thank you for letting us into your lives. Thank you for letting us explore. And thank you for reading. You're all the best in my book. And thank you to my incredible team. Each of them are so creative and talented in their own way, and not only that, but they are some of the most caring and hilarious people I've ever met. Thank you, Yany. Thank you, Kyle. Thank you, Taylor. Thank you, Tyson. And I guess I should thank John. So let's raise a glass to this past year, and let's look ahead to the next. Cheers!

Just a Few Places to Find Sturgis Coffee Co. + BENT WILLOW DESIGNS + BOYDS DRUG MART The winding roads of the Black Hills led us to Sturgis Coffee Company, a local roasterie that has been creating aromatic roasts for 14 years. “We’ve been doing coffee for over 20 years, but we’ve been roasting in Sturgis for close to 14,” said owner Anna Rowett-Kahler. “I feel like it’s kind of an accomplishment to still be here.” The Sturgis-based coffee bar is open year round and offers coffee mugs, tumblers, and merchandise like sweatshirts and hats, in addition to brewing up coffee and espresso drinks.

“We are known for our Hammer, which is two shots of espresso in our house blend, kind of like a redeye,” said Rowett-Kahler. In efforts to keep on top of the newest roasts, brews, and blends, the coffeehouse has just rebranded their company to something Rowett-Kahler says represents the Sturgis staple they have become. “It’s the same quality with a different look — an updated look, a cleaner and classier work in progress,” said Kahler. “Our company is about controlling our quality and always staying on top of that, while keeping things fresh."

Caffienated, warmed up, and ready to explore, we set out to Prairie Emporium. Owned and operated by the self-proclaimed “captain of the ship,” Max Fjelstad, this oddity shop has been welcoming locals since October 2013. “This is a place where all of your dreams and wishes come true,” said Fjelstad. “I’ve been collecting since I was a little kid, going from auctions and garage sales to places all over the country.” The shop of curiosities is assembled of collectibles, antiques, and historic donations from people in the community; and the history doesn’t stop in South Dakota. Pieces from all over the world have made their way to Fjelstad’s door, just waiting to be found by the right person. “I had a gentleman come in who had been looking all over the country for a turquoise phoenix bolo tie, one just like his grandpa had,” said Fjelstad. “He had been looking for four years and started crying because I had exactly what he was looking for.” From a six-foot skeleton made from cow bones to a one-of-a-kind photo of Potato Creek Johnny, this shop is always changing, and prides itself on preserving the history and character of once-loved pieces. “There is such a variety of items that it blows me away sometimes,” said Fjelstad. “I love what I do. You never know what, or who, is going to walk through the front door.”

UPCOMING EVENT JUDD HOOS W/ DENHAM DECEMBER 27 9 P.M.

We ended our day at Loud American Roadhouse. Known for the big music acts they bring, and the delicious food they serve, we met with the director of digital sales Chris Hornick of The HomeSlice Group to learn more about the restaurant-bar-concert venue combo. “We have live music all year round and have since 2001,” said Hornick. “There is also a weekly open mic night every Wednesday." In addition to being a premier midlevel music venue, the Roadhouse also stresses their attention to detail and quality when it comes to their food and drinks. “Our most popular food is our Steak Tips, which is beef tenderloin gently dusted with our secret blend of house herbs, spices, and flour, then flash-fried to a medium rare,” said Hornick. If you're looking for a late-night stop, you can try a fan favorite: the 3-2-1. This is three drinks for the price of two, all in one glass. There is also a full wine and whiskey bar, something that only adds to the full experience of the establishment. “We didn’t intend to turn into a tourist attraction, but people love how fun and cool it is,” said Hornick. “Even celebrities stop by, like a member of Guns N’ Roses last week."•

BEST NEW/OLD BUSINESS LOOK’S MARKETPLACE

AFTER BEING FOUNDED IN 1883, LOOK’S MARKET HAS REMAINED AN INTEGRAL PART OF SIOUX FALLS, PROVIDING QUALITY MEAT AND EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE. NOW DUBBED LOOK’S MARKETPLACE, IT HAS A NEW (MASSIVE) LOCATION AND A WHOLE HOST OF UNIQUE OFFERINGS FOR OLD AND NEW CUSTOMERS ALIKE. Look’s has taken over the former location of C.J. Callaway’s, located just east of Minnesota Avenue on 69th Street.

Owners Beau Vondra and Nick Heineman are cousins who became partners of Look’s 12 years ago after Nick’s father, Greg Heineman, purchased the business. Heineman and Vondra moved back to Sioux Falls where they grew up, from Chicago and Minneapolis respectively, to run the market. Vondra and Heineman knew they wanted to expand their footprint, but had originally planned to build a new place from scratch. When they saw this new location, though, they were sold. “We were just floored by the space—the history, the architecture, the proximity to current customers. We like to stay on the southside [of Sioux Falls] to provide [patrons] with a community feel and some dining options,” said Vondra.

The community feel has now expanded to multiple new kitchens, groceries, grab-and-go options, a rotunda for community seating, two outside patios, full-service fine dining, and a brewery. Vondra and Heineman worked hard to create an open-market feel to their new location in order to be an open book to their clientele. “One thing we want to point out is that we’ve opened up pretty much every area for the customers to see,” said Vondra. “They can see our butchers cutting, they can see our bakers baking, they can see our cooks cooking.” Many of Look’s customers have been shopping with them for years, which gives the market a family atmosphere that Vondra and Heineman say they work so hard to create. They know their customers’ favorite sports teams, what colleges they went to, and how their families are growing.

605 BEST

Vondra recounted how a member of their leadership staff is engaged to a customer who has been shopping there since she was 13 years old. This sense of connectedness has been woven into the new location. “Customers can really use the space however they want. They can come and get a pound of ground beef and leave. They can have a craft beer after a round of golf, or they could bring their families and sit at one of our community tables with another family and enjoy the afternoon,” said Heineman. “There are innumerable options as far as what you can do with the five kitchens that are in here.” The new and improved market will retain a staff of 70 members, increasing from the 20 team members at their former location. Vondra and Heineman started this process in August of 2018, started the demolition in January of 2019, and opened the new location in November. Because the new space allows for more food options for the public, Vondra says their menu will appeal to everyone. “Hopefully it will be a favorite place to eat,” said Vondra. Being both born and raised in Sioux Falls, the cousins say that the people have been the biggest reason for taking on this new adventure. Their clientele have asked for more throughout the years, and Vondra and Heineman say they're listening. Heineman hopes to continue their legacy: “We want it to be a highlight of Sioux Falls.”

BEST STATIONERY AND CARDS ZANDBROZ VARIETY

Amid a sea of colorful vintage signs, pinball machines, and revamped telephones, Zandbroz Variety owner Jeff Danz sat down with 605 to talk about the newest renovations to his store. After 30 years of dealing with a flooded basement, wall damage, and constant worry, Danz says the idea for the remodel came simply out of necessity. The basement floor was raised nearly five feet, which gives the back room a midlevel. “The building has always been central to what Zandbroz is. The most important thing is being a good steward to this building and keeping it strong,” said Danz. The remodeled back room features recovered vintage pieces of all sorts that are largely found and restored by Danz himself, who is an avid collector. “I buy things I like. If they sell, sometimes I’m disappointed and hate to see them go, but most often when somebody buys something from me, it’s because it made a connection with them,” said Danz. “That always makes me feel good to find a new home for some of those things. It’s a form of recycling, in my mind.” One of his favorite pieces is the former Bob’s Cafe sign, featuring Ima, who was the wife of Bob Lyons. The piece is from 1951 and pictures Ima holding a tray of food. As for Danz, he plans to keep acquiring more vintage pieces to fix up and sell to the public. “Vintage allows us to learn about our history and to celebrate it.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT ZANDBROZ.COM.

BEST BRANDING FERNSON BREWING COMPANY

Mitch Torbert and Evan Richards are the masterminds behind Fernson Brewing Company’s marketing, branding, and graphics. The graphic designer and marketing director chatted with 605 to give a look into their process.

“We find that partnering with organizations that are well thought of is a lot more fun for people than just ‘here’s a new beer’,'' said Torbert.

To witness the six aspects of their design, Richards encourages people to follow them on social media.

They also attribute the marketing to inneradvertising with FernsonFest (Fernson's annual beer and music event), their taprooms, and social media.

“Drink local, support local, read local, hang out local,” said Richards.

As for the design side of branding, Torbert and Richards follow six guidelines: sincere, humble, simple, imaginative, fun, and approachable.

Mama’s Ladas also has a large wine bar and homemade sangria. Mama’s Phried & Phillys specializes in authentic Philly cheese steak sandwiches and Matt’s grandmother’s recipe for southern fried chicken, which he says only a few people in his family know how to make.

BRADY MALLORY

For reporter and KELOLAND news anchor Brady Mallory, clothing is a battle armor of sorts. When he likes what he’s wearing, he says he feels invincible. Like his reporting, his style is also bold. Mallory caught up with 605 to talk about his fashion inspiration. After preparing the news stories for the day, Mallory perfects his sharp look. “I read through scripts and get to know the show. Then I put my tie on and pile on enough hairspray to get my pompadour just the right amount of obnoxious,” said Mallory.

Mallory says his inspiration comes from his parents’ young Elvis and Priscilla look in the ‘70s and celebrities like Ben Platt, Ryan Seacrest, David Beckham, Ellen DeGeneres, and Dolly Parton.

Off-air, Mallory says he is a casual t-shirt and jeans guy, but he loves dressing up for concerts, social gatherings, and the KELO Christmas party, which he says is a “very swanky affair.” At the end of the day, however, no matter what he’s wearing, Mallory cares about the news.

While getting ideas from these celebrities, Mallory has his own style that he describes as bold, classic, clean, and eclectic.

“We all do our best to bring important and meaningful stories to our viewers. I'm very proud of that,” said Mallory.

“I take a few risks here and there, and I like to try new trends, but I basically just stay with what I know looks good and fits well on my body,” said Mallory.

BEST COLLABORATION START UP SIOUX FALLS AND ZEAL

Earlier this year, Startup Sioux Falls and Zeal Center for Entrepreneurship formed a partnership to help local small businesses and entrepreneurs. Matt Paulson of Startup Sioux Falls and Brienne Maner of Zeal chatted with 605 about their collaboration.

said Paulson. “Whatever stage of business somebody is at and whatever problem they need help with, we can connect them to people that can help them or point them in the right direction.” The organizations host in-person events every month so that community members can network with each other. A full list of events can be found on their website. As for advice, Maner says to just take the first step.

“We’re all working toward the same goal, but how do we work more cohesively? It just made sense—as we continued to form that relationship and take stock of what entrepreneurs need in the community—to merge our efforts together,” said Maner. Startup and Zeal’s main goal is to connect entrepreneurs and small business owners within the community. “The joint organization will be able to connect people through government resources to metro capital resources to service providers to mentors,”

I STARTED BEADING JEWELRY... when I was a young girl, about 5 or 6 years old.

YOU MIGHT KNOW ME FROM... my recent profile in Vogue or events around the Black Hills.

FOR MY CREATIVE METHOD... I like to switch things up. I can go from loom to applique to peyote to brick stitch. Going back and forth helps to decrease burnout.

I STARTED BEADWORK... as a young girl. I would watch my mother, grandmother, and aunt work with their hands. From sewing, beading, and painting, I knew that this was something I wanted to do.

WHEN I CREATE A PIECE, IT TYPICALLY TAKES ME... anywhere from a few hours to weeks, depending on the size of the project.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF JEWELRY I SELL ARE... beaded earrings, bracelets, and collar necklaces.

CREATING PIECES IS IMPORTANT TO ME BECAUSE... beading is my therapy. I put a lot of good energy into all of my work, and it makes me happy to see other people appreciate my work.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT EXPERIMENTING WITH COLORS IS... that the combinations are limitless. Sometimes I like working with an explosion of colors and designs, and other times, I like the simple beauty of working with a muted palette.

ONE OF MY BEST SELLERS IS... my vintage beaded round earrings with dentalium shells.

JOSHUA’S COFFEE HOUSE IS A MISSIONAL BREW. Owners David and Victoria Obenauer wanted to create a peaceful atmosphere that “encourages simplicity and renews relationships.” “Our whole concept is to provide a service to the community and to be here for them and help them with their needs,” said Victoria. “Maybe they

want to study, maybe they want to get together with a friend or relative. It’s getting back to communicating. We’re so busy in life, and to take the time to just relax means a lot.” And relaxing it is. The piano music is met with smells from the floral shop next door, and the space in the historic John Mundt building has been restored with warm wood and modern light fixtures.

The newer local business in downtown Hartford is also best known for its inventive drinks, says Victoria. “We’re known for our specialty lattes,” she said. “The fall lattes have been a big hit, like the Pumpkin Spice and the Pumpkin Chai Latte.” The company is also known for its paninis.

“[Customers] really love the Turkey Pesto and the Turkey Bacon Chipotle [paninis],” said Victoria. “We make them fresh every day and also offer Ham and Cheese and Grilled Cheese.” Joshua’s Coffee House tries to “go the extra mile” with fresh ingredients. “The products are made with very good quality ingredients, which may set us apart from the other person,” said Victoria. “We want to be very fussy, if you will, when it comes to the finished product getting to the customer.”

with the soup du jour. “There is a different soup each day,” she explained. “We’ve done a Tomato Basil, a California Medley, a Chili, Chicken Wild Rice, and Cream of Potato. The coffee shop also has breakfast items, like the Breakfast Croissant or scones (Blueberry, Cranberry, and Apple Cinnamon). Victoria says baked goods are a hit with the community. “Joshua’s has homemade granola bars, muffins, cookies, and cakes. For cakes we’ve had a Lemon Cake and occasionally have a

The business offers Coffea coffee, which is a local favorite, but was not the favorite of the late Joshua (who disliked coffee in general). Victoria and David’s 22-year-old son passed away in 2012 from a site accident while cleaning windows for their other family business, High Rise of Sioux Falls Inc. The coffee shop was named in memory of their son. If you want to raise a glass to his memory, order Joshua’s favorite—a Hot Chocolate.

An additional homage to the Obenauers' son is the courtyard and garden, which Victoria says offers another way to unwind and chat (or not talk at all). “The courtyard is a little cold now, but in the spring and summer there is a waterfall, a fireplace, bistro lights, and over 150 plants,” she said. “It’s very beautiful.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT JCHHARTFORD.COM.•

Place Among the Pines by Kyle Determan

Ever since Chad Lundberg, director of information services at Black Hills State University, moved to Spearfish from Brookings seven years ago, he had his eye on a particularly unique property. So when the lot went off the market and came back at a lower, more affordable price, Lundberg jumped, ready to renovate the three separate, yet connected, cabins. Between countless projects and the finding of an 11,000-year-old fossil, Lundberg and his girlfriend, Cheri St. Pierre, have learned a lot while revitalizing the 1890s structures into photo-worthy rentals.

CABIN #2 Lundberg and St. Pierre, a Spearfish realtor, showed us to Cabin #2, the most modern of the three cabins. Having once been a garage, the pair spent two months refurbishing the apartment space with hand-built barn doors and locally sourced materials. “Everything is pretty well connected in this cabin,” said Lundberg. “It is basically all reclaimed barn wood from the area, steel from Whitewood, and flooring from the pine beetle kill in the Black Hills.”

From the entryway to the sitting area, every inch of the 384-square-foot space is used in an efficient way, including the lofted bedroom and the hallway kitchenette. “Before we put the kitchen back in, it seemed like a waste of space to just have a big hallway,” said St. Pierre. “The pipes were already here, so we installed a kitchen and now the space makes sense.”

8 2 \\\\\\\\\ D E C E M B E R + J A N U A R Y

Keeping things light and airy, Lundberg used whitewashed pine to open up the space, while decorating with simple statement pieces. “We used a lot of barnwood in here, and we sanded it down to bring out the different patterns and colors in the wood,” said Lundberg. “Features like the old log saw and plumbing pipe really bring it all together.”

Cabin #3 The main cabin the duo lives in when it isn’t being rented by Airbnb or VRBO is Cabin #3. This space is larger than the last, and offers a different perspective of the property. “This living room, and the fireplace, is my favorite space,” said St. Pierre. “From the builtins to the view, it is just such a great room for working out or yoga.” Speaking of fireplaces, there is another one in the dining room and one in the basement, which St. Pierre thinks may be original to the 1890 home. “The basement fireplace is built with big stones and goes all the way up,” said St. Pierre. “You can see the stones continue on the exterior of the home.” The themes of log cabins and outdoors carry throughout the cabin, with wooden beams and nods to biking act as frames for the natural views from almost every room. “Being so close to the bike trails is great, and of course the view of Lookout Mountain is always inspiring, especially at sunset and sunrise,” said Lundberg. The couple continues work on the three cabins, from building their own furniture to discovering the original bones of the home, like the stove/fireplace hybrid in the kitchen. “I spend a lot of time in here. There is so much light,” said St. Pierre. “Really, this whole house is such a wonder, and we really try to accentuate that.”•

hen Breadico closed its retail storefront and restaurant in downtown Sioux Falls, it was depressing. Not only was it depressing because I didn’t eat there nearly as often as I should have (I only had one of Breadico’s beautiful sandwiches once and never tried the pasta… whyyy), but no one thought they would ever get to eat their pizza ever again.

But wait! Owner David Napolitano must have felt the pure sadness in the air, because Pizza di Paolo opened on Minnesota Avenue in October. The family business is run by his parents, Dennis and Linda, and offers unique pizzas made fresh daily. 605's multimedia designer Yany Avelar and I went on a brisk afternoon to warm up with some Italian wood-fired pizza. The bright, intimate space smelled of burning wood. I noticed a woman enjoying her meal in a winter cap, and I looked at Yany and asked, “I don’t know if it’s the smell or her winter attire, but this

8 6 \\\\\\\\\ D E C E M B E R + J A N U A R Y

is giving me ski lodge vibes. Is that weird?” I would have gone into full apres ski mode if I didn’t have too much to do, because I noticed they serve beer (including local taps like Remedy Brewing Company) and wine. The branding was adorable, including custom signs hanging above each booth in retro Italian style. Also, someone was wearing a red Pizza di Paolo sweatshirt and I wanted to steal it.

What’s really cool is that the business is a grab-and-go eatery where you can get pizza by the slice or you can sit down and dine. Whoever did the layout and design did a great job because, while it’s very casual, you wouldn’t feel weird grabbing a glass of vino and having a date night there. First up were salads. Here’s the deal. I don’t mean this in a rude way, but sometimes at pizza places there’s what I call a bulls--- salad. Essentially it’s iceberg lettuce, shredded cheese you could get out of a plastic bag, and ranch or Italian dressing out of a packet. These were not that. There was the Caesar with romaine, tomatoes, parmesan, and croutons. I don’t have confirmation, but I’m pretty sure the croutons were house made, which wouldn’t shock me coming from the people of Breadico. They were fresh and soft, yet with a crunch. Then there was the Italian. This had romaine, pepperoncini, olives, parmesan, and tomatoes. “When you get a bite of the tomato it almost tastes like marinara,” said Yany. I’m that person at Olive Garden that turns savage when it comes to the black olives. I’ll sidetrack someone with conversation and eat all two or three of the black olives that come in the salad bowl. I know, I suck. This salad had all of the black olives and was glorious. Also, both dressings were delicious. I would legit come in for the salad. What is wrong with me? Someone take my temperature. Then the pizzas arrived. The Willie Pepperoni was a classic pizza with red sauce, mozzarella, and pepperoni. “The pepperonis are big, which is awesome,” said Yany. We both made satisfied noises when we got to the crust. So good.

Next was the Santa Lucia with onion, apple, pancetta, bel paese, pine nuts, arugula, and maple syrup. I’ve never seen an apple on a pizza in my life, and I appreciate new things. Also, I got scared and used a fork when I read “maple syrup.” I hate getting sticky. This was an experience, and was a sweet dish. My favorite part was the pine nuts, giving it that extra texture. Last was the highlight for the table, the Vito Bruno. This had arrabiata sauce, burrata, spicy soppressata, and arugula. The spicy kick made it, and the dough for this pizza seemed thicker and was the winner in our hearts. “This crust is definitely thicker,” said Yany, taking a bite of more sourdough goodness.•

BOTTOM LINE I’m obsessed. The restaurant has several flavors available for “pizza by the slice,” or you can get a full pizza to stay or go. There are a lot of different flavors, and it would be a lot of fun to go with friends and order a couple to share. Also, I never knew what a Profiterole was (a cream puff with ice cream and hot fudge), and now I need to have one.

I mean, you could just eat the crust and be in heaven. The pizzas are inventive, and there are so many options you have an excuse to keep going back for more. Again, I would totally just have the salad, which is not like me. Speaking of the real me, I can’t wait to try the desserts.

I loved it! From the custom artwork to the classic Italian red on the menu and staff attire, it was thought out and was a great mix of a grab-and-go and sit-down restaurant. Also, there were a couple vintage jukeboxes that were adorable.

This is super affordable. You can buy a 12-inch pizza for $14-$20 and a 16-inch pizza for $20-$28. You can also buy a pizza by the slice for $4-$6.

Bad Mom Day WHERE THE CHILD THINGS ARE by Kyle Determan

Mom guilt. This common phrase is the bane of my existence, and I’ll tell you why. The term “mom guilt” infers that only mothers suffer from specific guilt via the act

of parenting. What about the dads? And what about all of the other things we feel? I never hear people talk about Mom pride, and I know a lot of people who are proud of their children.

WHAT I ’ VE LE ARNED +

Babies don’t have to say words to hurt your feelings. On that same note, neither do you. Remember how impactful your demeanor, tone, and body language is to your little one.

+

Crying out of frustration is normal, even frequent. Let the tears flow, it feels good.

+

Not being able to communicate with your child is really hard. Not just for us, but for them. It will get better.

Either way, and as much as I hate to admit it, there does seem to be an extra layer of guilt that lingers between diaper changes, temper tantrums, and the first time your toddler runs for someone else.

But what if I don’t just want to survive? What if I want to get through each tantrum without yelling and feeling defeated? Or what if I just want 10 minutes of her cuddles, without having to bribe her with books or milk?

It is a feeling that I have struggled to describe to people, because honestly, I don’t know how to put into words the suffocating sense of failure and love crashing into your soul like a rogue paddle boat caught in the fury of the deep sea. Or maybe it’s because I’m ashamed that everything I had read while pregnant has been thrown to the wind and I am merely trying to survive.

Well, I guess I just need to do it. Easier said than done, I know, but just like I tell Sloan, if we take everything one step at a time, it is very unlikely we will trip. I want to start with what I call the “phase game.” The “phase game” is a combination of online forums, pediatricians, and wrinkly aunts telling you what phase your child is in, what to expect, and how to handle it.

LIFESTYLE

Luckily for me, Sloan and I have discovered the phase of no return, or something I like to call early-onset terrible twos. Side effects include hitting, screaming, biting, and my personal favorite, a general aversion to anything me.

you have to explain to the teacher to be weary of her flying fists.

It surfaced during the rough time between daycare and dinner when I somehow have to find time to pick her up, cook dinner, wait for it to cool down, and play games all simultaneously. And while that sounds outrageous to us (because we are adults,) the fact that this isn’t my default is world-shattering for her. Enter: mom guilt.

Myself.

And while these moments never last, it truly feels like these phases will, which is a hard pill to swallow when

The Timeout Rule

The other aspect of mom guilt that rattles my confidence in being a suitable parent?

I so distinctly remember making a list of basic rules I would adhere to as a mother; I would yell as little as possible, I would never spank, and I would always lead with love, were just a few of the big ticket items. Items, I now know, that are subject to change, and that is okay.

Âť

For children under 2, start with 30 second timeouts. After two, add a minute for every year they are old. Two years old = two minute timeout.

Alternatives for yelling back:

» Try whispering to your child. Being extra quiet forces them to calm down in order to hear you.

»

Practice deep bellybreathing. This is a technique that can help both you and your little one calm down enough to find the root of the problem.

»

Remember that some feelings are too big for their little hearts. Take a deep breath and try to put yourself in their shoes (as tiny as they may be).

Spanking is something Reid and I have decided against, so while that will never falter, I have found myself yelling at a toddler that doesn’t know how to tell me what’s wrong. I have found myself pleading with her to just go to sleep, and missing her seconds after. I have found myself on my bedroom floor in tears, surrounded by her socks, desperately wishing I knew how to make her understand. Enter: more mom guilt.

But what you will do is continue to love her. You will continue to protect and care for her until she can do it herself, and even then, you won’t give up.

Mom guilt is inevitable, especially when you reach a new phase of parenting. You will never feel like you did it, like you handled the grocery aisle meltdown perfectly or like you are her favorite person nine times out of 10.

And to tell you the truth, that is exactly what your child needs.•

Because, as much as mom guilt convinces you otherwise, you are a phenomenal parent because you are doing the best you can with what you have.

ASK THE JOHNS

Know Your SD

YES, ALL THREE OF THESE GUYS ARE NAMED JOHN. YES, IT WAS A POPULAR NAME IN THE ‘80S. THE IDENTITIES OF THESE THREE AMIGOS HAVE BEEN ALTERED TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT. HAVE A QUESTION FOR THE JOHNS? SHOOT AN E-MAIL THEIR WAY: THEJOHNS@605MAGAZINE.COM.

JR: I feel like this sounds like a movie with Anne Hathaway. That got a 94% on Rotten Tomato. What a treat. Wait, what are we talking about? JW: My rule is, whenever I’m feeling vulnurable (especially at work), I always ask for trial by combat. People usually leave me alone after that. JT: All you can do is give it your best. I think the best thing for your sanity would be to communicate and ask a manager or someone on the team to answer any questions you might have.

I’M DECENTLY HAPPY WITH MY CAREER, BUT I FEEL LIKE I COULD BE DOING SOMETHING MORE MEANINGFUL WITH MY CAREER. I’M NOT QUITE SURE WHAT THAT WOULD BE, BUT I’M WONDERING IF IT’S WORTH THE RISK. SHOULD I TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH? JR: My guess is your guess of your guess of what your job should be. I think I just broke my brain. JW: Being decently happy with your job is a big win! But if you think you can do better, remember what Karl Marx said: “In proportion therefore, as the repulsiveness of the work increases, the wage decreases.” Make sense? No, didn’t think so, and neither does communism. Stay with your good job until you have a better plan in stone. JT: Knowing you might want something else is step one. While you determine what exactly you might want to pursue, I would hold it out just a little longer. Or, maybe if you’re “decently happy” then research ways you can make yourself even happier at your current position.

I’VE HAD THE SAME FRIENDS SINCE COLLEGE, AND THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH THEM, BUT I’D LIKE TO MEET NEW PEOPLE. WHERE CAN I GO TO MEET NEW FRIENDS? JR: Facebook groups

seem to be the way to go. Pretty soon you’ll be taking really graphic photos with TMI questions you have, and then you’ll get 86 comments full of friends! If that doesn’t work, take a selfie and post it with a quote about feeling fierce and independent. JW: I felt the same way,

so I downloaded a bunch of apps to meet my next best bro. So far this app called Grindr has been a goldmine. All these dudes want to be my new best friend. I’ll update you when I start meeting up with them next week. JT: There are plenty of

ways to meet new friends. Join a networking group. Start taking workout classes. Sign up for a recreational sports league.
