It is in the spirit of our five guiding principles that we invite you to the 12th Annual 5Point Adventure Film Festival. Experience films of pure adventure, deep, diverse stories revealing grit, commitment, perseverance, passion and PURE JOY. We’ve curated an exciting and engaging experience that we hope will motivate you to be your best and brightest self in the world.

We invite you to soak in what you see, hear, and most importantly, feel—and with that inspiration, to go deeply into your own inner wilderness. From this quiet inner place, we encourage you to find an inherent groundedness that is your truest self. The world needs you and your gifts, so we invite you to trust yourself, to be kind to others, to walk softly on the earth, and with courage, embrace the moment.

Collectively we come together at 5Point to experience our common humanity. Emboldened by this community and the films we will watch, we can learn from one another and reach further.

We can find comradery and joy with people who reflect back to us our own inner strength and values, who teach us to be brave, and offer a hand when we need it most.

This year, we invite you to Choose Your Own Adventure—to pop up from your everyday, to look around, and find within yourself a sense of belonging to the wide open places of possibility and adventure.

We all stand on the shoulders of those who have come before, and we lead the way for those to follow. This is a gift and an honor. We are grateful for the community of adventurers, filmmakers, artists and seekers that share their talent, time, and commitment with us. Their creativity infuses the stories and the landscapes with meaning and value and reminds us of our interconnectedness to one another and the great outdoors.

ESTABLISHED IN 2007, 5Point Adventure Film Festival aims to inspire adventure of all kinds, to connect generations through shared experience, to engage passion with a conscience, and to educate through film. 5Point Film continues to deliver a unique film experience by drawing in passionate athletes, artists, filmmakers, and the community around short documentary adventure films. 5Point also facilitates the 5Point Film Fund, a grant program for emerging filmmakers, and organizes the Dream Project, a student scholarship program for local high school students.

It’s a living, breathing, collective visual expression of the people who are sharing in this festival experience. And that means you. For over twenty years, Derek has climbed and trekked around Colorado’s fiftyeight, fourteen thousand foot peaks with his 4x5 view camera. His intent has been to spend enough time on and around these majestic peaks to witness something more than the geography of the landscape. He seeks to capture the truly sublime beauty of an austere and unforgiving environment as it is revealed by the ephemeral conditions of light and weather.

Gurley’s show is a parody about the development of the natural world, showing alternative uses for the National Parks, turning these national treasures into recreational and commercial facilities. The works investigate and explore the shortcomings of modern development and humanity’s disregard and commodification of nature.

Martin’s show showcases the artist’s transition from his earlier sculptural practice to his current work with painting in a retrospective. His dioramas are carved from a variety of woods using hand and power tools. Martin’s narrative landscapes generally combine personal history, shared stories, and roadside observations.

Ella Beck CRMS Ella Beck is a senior at Colorado Rocky Mountain School. Ella will be using her Dream Project funding to travel to rural Nepal where she will be working with the Oda Foundation’s Women’s Empowerment Team. Her focus will be on breaking down the stigmas surrounding menstruation in poor, rural communities by helping distribute sanitary products.

Molly Hancock GWSHS

Molly Hancock is in her junior year at Glenwood Springs High School. For her project, she will be channeling her love of horses into creating a documentary about the Riding Institute for Disabled Equestrians (R.I.D.E), an equine therapy program for developmentally and physically disabled children and adults.

Isaac Musselman BHS Isaac Musselman’s passion is aeronautics, and as a sophomore at Basalt High School, he will educate and inspire others by creating an aviation and space club, which will include work with drones and rockets, guest speakers and astronomy nights, among other things. In addition, he will work to bring an aviation curriculum into the Roaring Fork School system.

BHS A senior at Basalt High School, Emily Northrup will be using her Dream Project funding to purchase her own cello which will allow her to pursue her dream of becoming a music educator when she attends Brigham Young University in the fall.

Carla Soto BHS A junior at Basalt High School, Carla Soto cares deeply about immigration and art. For her Dream Project, she will be traveling to El Paso, Texas, where she’ll use her passion for photography to bring awareness to immigration issues arising from current border policies.

Beverly Patton RFHS Beverly Patton attends Roaring Fork High School and is in her junior year. She discovered her passion for writing and poetry when Aspen Words, poets visited her school, and she learned a powerful new way to express her voice. Her dream is to share her love of poetry by teaching a weekly, semesterlong poetry class to local middle school students.

Emily Northrup

CRMS Three students, Eli Li, Chloe Gonzalez, and Sarah Teague made history by applying for their Dream Project jointly.

This dynamic force will be headed to Denver to work with Urban Peak, an organization serving homeless youth.

In addition, they will be investigating what legislators are doing to address the issues of homelessness and extreme poverty in the United States.

The 5Point Film Fund supports filmmakers challenging the storytelling status quo through monetary grants.

We connect artists and filmmakers with opportunities to showcase their work to a network of other creatives, the outdoor industry and beyond. Over the years, 5Point Film Fund has helped make many film projects possible that have gone on to win awards and tour the world. Check out this year’s recipients!

FLOATIN’ WITH HUCK – 2018 FILM FUND RECIPIENT Members from last year’s award-winning film Bikes of Wrath were the recipients of the 2018 Film Fund for their upcoming film Floatin’ with Huck which is slated for completion in 2020.

In Floatin’ with Huck, three Australian friends attempt to build a homemade raft and travel the length of the Mississippi River in 90 days with only $211 between them (the modernday equivalent of what Huck and Jim began with in “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” circa 1840). The trailer for Floatin’ with Huck will be shown before the feature film on Saturday, April 27, Into The Canyon.

“We were lucky enough to be the recipients of the 5Point Film Fund in 2018 for our documentary Floatin’ with Huck. Not only did the fund help us overcome financial hurdles and allow us to complete the film’s trailer, but it’s also a testament to the ongoing support the 5Point team offers its filmmakers. This festival grows with you, and you grow with it. We are beyond appreciative, and thankful, for 5Point’s ongoing belief in us as storytellers, and we are (as Carbondale locals love to say) STOKED! for many more years of collaboration, films, and friendship to come”.

FLOATIN’ WITH HUCK

THE QUIET FORCE – 2018 FILM FUND RECIPIENT The Quiet Force, a film about the immigrant workforce of American ski towns, received Film Fund support to add Spanish subtitles - with the intent for Spanish speaking and English speaking audiences to watch the film together. This film brings the community together and examines the humanity of all people residing in ski towns and contributing to the economy.

Megan Bourke is a 50-year-young local who moved to the valley at the ripe and ski-ripping age of 3. She has a passion for dogs, photography and health. A seasoned ski pro and trainer, Bourke spent 25 years working for Aspen Skiing Company.

Previously educated in Wyoming, Boulder and NYC, she now spends 7 months a year in Aspen and the other 5 months in Maine. The outdoors and giving back to the communities in which she resides are her favorite past times.

FITZ CAHALL

Co-founder and Creative Director at Duct Tape Then Beer, Fitz started his career as a true dirtbag writer / naked subsistence hunter. He has an appreciation for fine (not-that-fine) beers, behavioral economics, his rad wife and two sons, and helping others realize their creativity.

CONNOR P COLEMAN

After a childhood filled with family vacations to countless state and national parks, Connor Coleman embarked on a career in non-profit land conservation sprinkled with stints as a wildland firefighter, wildlife biologist, and some time spent playing cowboy. He now works with landowners across the West to sustainably manage their land while residing above Carbondale.

ANN DRIGGERS

Ann Driggers is a weekend warrior and backcountry bon vivant who lives to ride, run, ski and paddle in the great outdoors. Originally from the UK, she met her husband Chad while hitchhiking. Now a Carbondale local, she is most often found on trail with her Jack Russell Terrier, Scooter.

RICHARD FULLER

Richard Fuller is a mortgage loan originator in Carbondale with Cornerstone Home Lending and has been in the finance industry for over 20 years. While he enjoys all outdoor activities, he spends most of his time on a mountain bike or road bike during the summer months. His most recent adventures usually involve trying to keep up with his young daughter on her bike.

LARI GOODE

Lari Goode strives to be gainfully unemployed but finds herself crazy busy wearing various hats including; stuffy accountant, restaurateur, crossfit coach (and gym owner), dog Mom, and wife of the infamous Mark Fischer. In her spare time, she tries to play outside as much as possible (when it isn’t below 32 degrees).

ROGER HENNEFELD

Roger, along with his wife Carrie and 2 daughters, moved to the Roaring Fork Valley in 1998 after he completed business school at CU. Roger knows everyone needs the spiritual uplift that being in nature brings and feels that this great social event and film festival is the perfect facilitator.

RYAN KALAMAYA

Ryan Kalamaya grew up playing baseball with dreams of playing in the big league in a big city. Instead, the choice to travel around the world after college led him to fell in love with mountain-town living and started a law firm in the Valley.

SUMMERS MOORE

After graduating from the University of Denver, Summers Moore arrived in the Roaring Fork Valley and has since been an integral part of the community. As an artist, photographer, mentor, and curator, she exposes the brilliance in nature; human nature, natural light, landscapes, and her living subjects. As a mother, she found a knack for capturing her daughters expressions of innocence, wonder and joy. Her love for the area is immeasurable, as she taught skiing for 11 years and worked with the Aspen and Carbondale Animal hospitals. Summers’ film Ten Years Out premiered at 5Point 2018 and has gone on to screen around the world.

PENN NEWHARD

Penn Newhard’s decision to leave his Wall Street bond trader job in 1989 and relocate to Colorado led him to a renaissance ski bum lifestyle. Just five years after a stint as Advertising Director of Climbing Magazine, Penn founded Backbone Media, which specializes in social media, PR, and media planning. He lives in a log cabin in Aspen with his wife, Kirsten, and four tow-head kids.

It shows what preceded the afternoon of September 3, 2017 when Adam Ondra, a professional rock climber and currently one of the best climbers in the world, made a little piece of climbing history when he climbed his project in the spectacular Hanshelleren Cave in Norway. The route, later named Silence, received a new grade of 9c and became the hardest route in the world.

If he succeeds, he will set a new altitude record in paragliding, but the air is thin between the 8,000-meter peaks, and take-offs and landings are extremely tricky. Unacquainted prior to their diagnosis, they were brought together via passion for the Tetons and their battle to beat cancer. While undergoing treatments, both men were reminded of their passion for the mountains through art in their treatment facilities. This passion, and their shared struggle with cancer, brought Tate and Brian to the decision to share in a lifelong goal of climbing the Grand Teton. In the summer of 2017, Tate and Brian set out to climb the Grand Teton as a symbol of overcoming and persevering through struggle. Both Tate and Brian hope to bring awareness to the prevention of colon cancer through this project.

Many climbers were shocked to learn that one of three combined events required to compete for a medal is in speed climbing. Mikaya Heart was 52 when she first tried kitesurfing. She saw someone kitesurfing and said to herself, “I’m going to do that.” So she went out a bought a kite a never looked back.

Kitesurfing has become an obsession for Heart, now 66, and has helped her to let go of many of her material possessions in order to travel wherever the wind takes her. But it is more than just a sport she loves. Kitesurfing also helped to heal the traumas of her past, and lead to the manifestation of a joy-filled life rather than one of anger.

In Due Time is the story of two men who trekked 105 miles across Greenland’s Arctic Circle Trail in less than four days. Bears Ears National Monument is one of the most talked-about public lands under threat, but the public dialogue often glosses over how sacred it is to many Native Americans. In March 2017, a group of tribes put their differences aside and came together to run 800 miles to Bears Ears—to send a message of unity. The Sacred Strides for Healing Prayer Run wove from tribal homelands across the Southwest to Bears Ears. Meet the people who are participating in the public lands conversation with their feet, and learn about why this land is so important to them.

At the time, serving was his life line, a way out of trouble. After 5 years of service in Iraq, Will was discharged with injuries and severe PTSD, deeming him unsuited for service. Upon returning home, Will felt completely isolated and hopeless. That’s when he took up hiking and began on the Pacific Crest Trail in 2016. This summer he finished the Appalachian trail, walking a cumulative 3,800 miles on his road to recovery. His goal is to heal and promote healing through hiking for anyone else who’s suffered the effects of emotional and physical trauma.

Jason Blevins has spent more than 20 years traversing Colorado’s high country, documenting the Western Slope’s rich characters, communities and businesses. He is a writer and co-founder at The Colorado Sun.

MITCH BRENTON

Mitch comes to 5Point for his second round of jury duty from Outside Magazine, where he serves as their resident Video Curator. For two and half years, he’s been sourcing the best online adventure films the outdoor world has to offer. Currently living on the coast of Maine, he enjoys ‘skiing the east’ as much as walking along the ocean.

ADAM MONTGOMERY

As Senior Manager of Programming for the Sundance Film Festival, Adam has overseen the selection process since 2005 with over 14,000 submissions received annually. In addition to programming feature films and documentaries, Adam also programs the Festival’s Midnight section and lends his past experience in television development to Sundance’s newest Festival program, Indie Episodic. Prior to joining the Institute, he spent five years at Imagine Entertainment where he worked on acclaimed series such as Arrested Development and 24. From 2014-2017, he served as Director of Programming for CIMMfest, a film and music festival based in Chicago.

LINDSAY NEWMAN

Lindsay Newman is the Outdoor Adventure film programmer for Crested Butte Film Festival, a nonprofit consultant and development associate with over a decade of international and localized work. She has dedicated her life to empowering stories and capacity building within communities. Her nonprofit work includes cofounding the film focused organization American Canary, and building strategic partnerships with organizations working as change-makers with indigenous youth, animal rights, political advancement and environmental justice. She holds a BA in English Literature and a master’s degree in nonprofit management from Regis University. She seeks to utilize the storytelling and the third sector to enhance social change and foster humanity and beauty within the world.

BETHANY SCULLY

Bethany is a short film producer who cut her chops in the media department at GoPro where she was privileged to work on many adventure-driven, heartfelt projects including You’ll Be My Arms, I’ll Be Your Eyes, which won the Most Inspiring Film Award at 5Point Film in 2017. She focused on developing Latin American programming and distribution, traveling regularly to one of her all time favorite places, Mexico City. Since then, she has produced an Emmy award winning web series for Vox.com in San Francisco and several short films exploring human connection with nature for BeAlive. She is passionate about conservation and closed-loop recycling. A year after making a pact to stop using single-use plastics, she was inspired to explore a commitment beyond packaging and confront her own habits around consumption.

She now finds herself 4 months into an experiment she is calling a “Nothing New Year”. This Portland, Oregon native has just survived her first Midwest winter, which included a “Weather Bomb” and “Polar Vortex” and may be found exploring the freshwaters of her new state of Michigan on the weekends.

Stacy Bare is an intermediate but willing skier, a mediocre boatman, an adequate climber, and a veteran of the US Army. Stacy got home in March from a ski expedition in Afghanistan and has also completed expeditions with various first ascents and descents in skiing and climbing in Angola and Iraq as part of his Adventure Not War project. He is a co-founder of the Great Outdoors Lab along with Dr. Dacher Keltner at the Greater Good Science Center to put scientific data behind the notion that time outdoors is good for you.

He is also the Principal of Bare, LLC supporting organizations working at the intersection of health, wellness, and the outdoors to grow. He holds degrees from the Universities of Mississippi and Pennsylvania, was one of the 2014 National Geographic Adventurers of the Year, and the 2015 SHIFT Conservation Athlete of the year. He is at home in Salt Lake City, UT with his wife, daughter, and a Hemingway cat.

HEATHER HANSMAN

Heather Hansman is an awardwinning journalist whose work has appeared in Outside, California Sunday, Smithsonian, and many other publications. Her first book, Downriver, which is about the Green River, and water in the West, is out now. After a decade of raft guiding across the United States, she lives in Seattle.

MEREDITH MCKEE

As Program Director at 5Point Adventure Film Festival, Meredith’s deepest passion is to share stories that can change the world. She once dreamed of being Katie Couric as a young girl yet her business mind and fear of the mic, lead her to a career behind-the-scenes as a producer at GoPro and public relations executive at Aspen Snowmass, prior to her role at the best festival in the world - 5Point, where she has finally embraced the mic. Meredith is fueled by making people laugh as much as humanly possible and the unbelievably stellar humans that flock to the 5Point flame. Paddy O’Connell is a freelance creator and storyteller, and the host and co-writer of the Safety Third podcast. When he’s not practicing Footloose-inspired dance moves, Patrick Swayze-esque hair flips, and grooming his mustache to resemble Tom Selleck’s lip caterpillar, Paddy can be found in the mountains—mostly likely being a bit loud and doing something a lot weird. He is based in Carbondale, Colorado.

BEATRIZ SOTO

Beatriz joined Wilderness Workshop in the summer of 2018 as the Latino outreach coordinator. Originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, she grew up in a bicultural setting between Mexico and the United States throughout her life. She graduated from Basalt High School in 1999 and studied architecture in Chihuahua City. Having the opportunity to work in both the US and Mexico, she has tried to engage on very diverse types of architectural and community projects, always with an environmental focus. She is very passionate about sustainable and conscientious design. Regularly being a part of two different worlds, she tries to bring people together and be a liaison for people in any community she’s a part of; from Chihuahua City, to the tiny beach town of San Pancho, to the Roaring Fork Valley. Beatriz has moved in and out of the Valley and has been back since 2013 with her young son. Together they love to travel, snowboard, camp, hike and eat good tacos!

CASSIDY WILLEY

Cassidy Willey is a Roaring Fork Valley native. She is an actor, director, educator, and mama to a sweet (almost) 2-year-old. Cassidy has been a theatre artist all of her life.

She has taught drama and improv for many years and currently works as a teaching artist for VOICES. Cassidy can also be seen regularly on stage making people laugh with Thunder River Theatre’s Consensual Improv. When she’s not performing/directing/rehearsing, she loves rafting, paddleboarding, hiking, and soaking up the Colorado sun with her family and dog, Walt.

Jenny is an accomplished rock climber with a passion for adventure that has brought her everywhere from the Chalten range of Patagonia to the jungles of Rio and the wild North Cascades. She hails from the Pacific Northwest and currently makes her home in Bend, Oregon, where she is a writer and a guide. NOAM ARGOV

Noam Argov is an independent filmmaker and National Geographic explorer. She runs her own production company, where her academic background in international development always finds a way into her work. Many of her projects take a human and cultural lens to storytelling. Noam’s first short documentary Running Across California premiered with Outside Online and was featured on National Geographic through the Women of Impact campaign. My Dear Kyrgyzstan is her second independent film and premiered at the Oscar-qualifying Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. RORY BOSIO

Rory Bosio is an ultra runner from Lake Tahoe, CA. She specializes in 100 mile races in the mountains, and is a two time winner of the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, as well as the only female to place top ten overall in the event’s history. DYLAN H BROWN

Dylan H Brown is an award-winning contemporary adventure photographer and videographer. In rootto-stalk productions, his creative direction allows content to reach every potential audience. Dylan travels from the American Southwest’s deepest slot canyons to the highest villages of the Indian Himalaya and resurfaces with compelling visuals of landscapes and human portraiture. His affinity for the remote desert led him to complete the standup paddleboard first-descent of the 100-mile Escalante River, one of the most remote and wild rivers in the Lower 48. When Brown isn’t behind the lens, you can find him backcountry skiing, mountain biking, and stand-up paddle boarding near his home in Colorado, or exploring the furthest reaches of civilization somewhere in the world. MICHAEL BROWN

In his career, Michael Brown has excelled as both an adventure athlete and as a filmmaker. He has been to the summit of Mount Everest five times, each time with cameras rolling.

His work as a director and cinematographer spans all seven continents and won many festival & industry awards including three national Emmy Awards. Michael is also a recipient of the International Alliance For Mountain Film’s Grand Prix, awards at the Banff Mountain Film Festival, the Explorers Festival’s Camera Extreme and the Giant Screen Cinema Association (IMAX) Outstanding Cinematography Award. Michael’s lens has captured ice caves for NOVA, tornadoes for Discovery, science at the South Pole for National Geographic, avalanches for the BBC, and mountain climbing for four giant screen IMAX movies. Michael has made a habit of going to the world’s harshest, most dangerous environments and always comes back with incredible footage and compelling stories. Hilary Byrne and Sophie Danison are filmmakers with a deep love for the outdoors and a belief that quality storytelling can lead to positive social change. Hilary spent seven years in Jackson Hole working for some of the top action sports production companies including Brain Farm and Teton Gravity Research, producing content for Red Bull Media House, National Geographic, and Outside Television. Sophie is a videographer, photographer and film editor, inspired by the outdoors and facilitating storytelling of people doing what makes them feel alive.

At 16, she had her first “real” outdoor experience, in Northern Minnesota, and since then she has been committed to combining her passion for the outdoors with her profession. When she picked up a camera for the first time in 2014, she knew she had found her niche. She was taken on to the North Face team in 2017, and in one year alone joined legendary climbers Alex Honnold, Jimmy Chin and Conrad Anker on an expedition to Antarctica, documented Katie Bono’s speed record on Denali, and traveled to the Kashmir region of Northern India on an all-female first ascent expedition. Brittany Delph is an independent filmmaker and photographer based in the Pacific Northwest. Her passion is focused on creating meaningful work at the intersection of art, culture, and the outdoors. Anson is a commercial, film and television director and part owner of production company Camp4 Collective, based in Salt Lake City, Utah. His lifelong passion for film was born of a childhood spent in the rural mountain west, wandering and devouring books, music, and movies. He worked his way up from 2nd AC, worked as a DP for 7 years, and now directs brand, doc and TV work. Anson has directed major campaigns for Amtrak, BF Goodrich, The North Face, Volkswagen, and Apple. He has won over 20 major film festival awards for his narrative and documentary work.

GEVIN FAX

A native Californian, Gevin’s passion for riding motorcyles was well-defined from a young age. One of her greatest passions has been finding strong, independent women who also love riding bikes—thus her creation of The Litas, her film in this year’s festival, as well as a women’s motorcycle collective in the Los Angeles area. Gevin’s love for motorcycles landed her a principal role in a Turner Broadcasting Documentary call, Biker Women. The documentary aired worldwide on TBS, LifeTime, The Learning Channel, and The Discovery Channel. In addition to all of this badassery, Gevin is also an accomplished musician, and has held it down as a bass player for the band KLYMAXX, recently performing on and producing the band’s latest album, “The Maxx is Back,” (which hit #13 on Billboard charts). Gevin is also a 4-time Cover Girl and has appeared in Rolling Stone, People, Time, and various magazines all over Europe. FILM: THE LITAS

CAMERON FORD

Cameron is an award-winning filmmaker whose collective work as a director, cinematographer, editor, producer and writer has screened at more than 60 festivals around the world, and on network television in both Australia and the USA. The Bikes of Wrath is Cameron’s first feature-length adventure/literature documentary. He has recently completed principal photography on his second feature-length adventure/literature documentary, Floatin’ with Huck, in which 3 Australian friends travel the length of the Mississippi River on a homemade raft exploring the racial and economic divide in America through the lens of Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” FILM: FLOATIN’ WITH HUCK TRAILER

Alisa Geiser is a writer and filmmaker based in Boulder, Colorado. Ian Glover a.k.a. Big Dog, is a stand out in Marin County, running the biggest kids surf camp in California, Big Dog Surf Camp. His motivation to help kids learn about the ocean and his favorite sport has brought more than 80 kids a day to his camp.

Joaquín Gomez is a composer, sound designer and producer from Buenos Aires, Argentina. He started working in the audiovisual world at 15, creating soundtracks for documentaries, animations, video games, trailers, tv series, mapping and films.

With both classical and contemporary formation, he blends sound design and music with modern techniques. His great passion for nature and outdoor sports led him to find his true north, combining his music with this amazing industry and creating Ona Sounds, a film scoring and sound design company for audiovisual material. Currently he is working at the Banff Centre of Arts and Creativity in the audio post production & recording department. FILM: WALLMAPU

KAREN GREY

Karen Grey is the founder of Waldkinder Adventure Preschool, a nature-based preschool operating in Carbondale now for the past ten years. Karen studied psychology at University of Central Florida. She moved to Ft Collins, CO for graduate school in marriage and family therapy. Through Waldkinder, Karen works daily helping families to raise self-reliant, resilient children in an age of self-indulgence and materialism by teaching them how to keep themselves and their children engaged with nature. Karen coaches teachers and parents alike how, in this time of overprotection and entitlement, to guide children to be the responsible, courageous adults we need to help recover a world that’s failing in so many ways.

JUAN GROBLER

Juan was born in Zimbabwe and grew up in South Africa. Film has always been his passion and he has been involved in a number of facets within film. He is currently directing and producing a big budget rugby film that would prove to be the first of it’s kind and is now in pre-production.

He has produced and directed a number of short films, including several for the 5Point Film Festival that include, Of Rivers & Young Fishers which was screened in 2018 and Cowgirl to be screened in 2019. Will Gurley works in painting, sculpture and public intervention. His recent artworks concentrate on themes surrounding landscape conservation and industrialization. Will believes art can confront the contemporary challenges of humanity’s relationship with nature. His works employ humour and nostalgia, alongside serious environmental commentary, as a means of engagement. Born in Denver in 1982, Will Gurley studied Painting at Rhode Island School of Design and also has a Masters of Industrial Design from Central Saint Martins in London. Parallel to his artistic practice, he is a designer for Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, where he develops rides and attractions for the 175-year-old historic park.

Lindsey Hagen is the Executive Producer at Stept Studios. Lindsey leads story development and brand marketing initiatives through cause related story telling. Lindsey’s stories call upon the human spirit and create platforms for empowerment through meaningful context and timely initiatives. Kaitlin is a pediatric occupational therapist currently relocating from Atlanta, GA to Denver, CO. She began climbing 1 year ago in the upper extremity amputee category and has competed at the national and international level. SARAH HERRON

Sarah Herron is a Colorado native who gained her notoriety on ABC’s The Bachelor for being the first contestant with a physical disability.

Sarah was born with Amniotic Band Syndrome, but it hasn’t stopped her from climbing mountains, skiing double black diamonds and even searching for love on television. It was the outreach of young women who watched and related to Sarah on the show that inspired her to start the nonprofit, SheLift. Today, Sarah is on a cross country tour in the US leading a new workshop series for women called “A Course In Confidence.” Sarah wants to share with other women whether it’s on the slopes, on a trail or on a show, finding love is possible and it starts with loving yourself.

MERRILL JOHNSON

Merril and her family own Cedar Ridge Ranch, just outside of Carbondale. The farm started as a horse boarding facility. Her love for horses grew and so did her love for the land and its well being. She fell into farming backwards, and it started with compost, while being a sustainability student at CMC. She became educated about whole systems thinking and the sustainability and practices of the family business. From making and selling compost they got into raising Large Black Heritage breed pigs for pork and Zibo cattle and their bond to the local community and organic food became even stronger. She also teaches and coaches in order to share her love of horse with others. She has now started sharing the farming experience in providing glamping accommodations to do so. Ranching is a tough world that presents a unique set of challenges that we have to overcome everyday, but it’s a great fulfilling life that requires a lot of hard work to succeed. FILM: COWGIRL

Derek Johnston has been a professional artist for over thirty years. His fine art landscape photography is in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago and has been honored with a Colorado Council on the Arts Grant in Visual Arts. 5Point Film’s Executive Director Regna, seeks to make the world a better place through creative and impactful work in service to community development, education, and wellness. As a director and producer for the arts, she has worked in both the private sector as a business owner as well as in human services, and arts-based non-profits. Most recently, Regna was Director of Operations and Education for Aspen Film where she was responsible for the overall operations as well as for producing the three signature festivals. Additionally, she oversaw a robust education program. Prior to her move to the Roaring Fork Valley, she was the Artistic Director and co-owner of the historic Paradise Theatre in Paonia, CO. Programming included first-run movies, independent and foreign cinema, national musical touring acts, and original theatrical productions.

Currently, she works with Carbondale Arts as Board Chair. She holds a M.Ed. from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. She is a proud mom of two boys and enjoys hiking, gardening, painting and getting down on the dance floor.

Taylor Keating and Cedar Wright are two Boulder adventure filmmakers who put humor and self deprecation first, keeping their stories a little bit humble, and a lot low budget.

Raised in Northwest Montana, Jessica Kilroy draws inspiration from the rivers, rocks, plants and creatures that dance upon mountain heights and open lands. Her newest projects incorporate field recordings of natural sounds into her compositions and live performances. Through such work, she hopes to raise awareness for conservation issues and the rapidly disappearing soundscapes of our natural lands. Jessica is also a rope access worker and a long-time rock climber. She has performed, recorded, climbed, and dangled from ropes all over the globe. Carbondale based painter, Bobby Martin, has been honing his painting practice while making a living as a welder/metal fabricator and home builder. Athena Morton is the Festival Director of the Port Fairy Adventure Film Festival, located on the south coast of Australia. Born and raised in the midwest, Athena graduated with a degree of Environmental History from the University of Montana. After finishing university and working as a wilderness guide, Athena had a quarter life crisis and bought a one way ticket to Australia. Seven years later, she’s now a dual citizen, holds a Post Grad in Psychology and is still desperately trying to learn how to surf! Leon Morton is the Program Director of the Port Fairy Adventure Film Festival and a member of the award winning adventure documentary film, The Bikes of Wrath. Originally from the Lakes District region of the UK, Leon grew up in Australia which he still calls home. Leon’s background is in outdoor education and expedition guiding, having worked and studied with Outward Bound, World Challenge Expeditions, Howmans Gap Alpine Centre, and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. For the past 7 years, Leon has been employed as a professional firefighter where he works in a specialist technical rescue unit on the south coast of Australia. Despite growing up in a culture of mathematicians and house cats, Hahn eventually found himself wandering around the west pursuing the elusive ghosts of his imagination. Tahria Sheather is an Australian documentary filmmaker whose work explores our human connection with the natural world. She’s created short films, 360 video experiences, broadcast series and commercials for brands and media outlets including The New York Times, National Geographic, Chaco Footwear, Destination Canada, Columbia Sportswear, and NoVo Foundation. Justin Stroup is an all-around enthusiast that makes his home near the Bighorn Mountains in Sheridan, Wyoming. A love of storytelling and a fascination with the absurdity that’s often found in everyday life led Justin to pick up a camera shortly after college to work on shoestring budget documentary shorts. He ultimately produced two seasons of a fly fishing television show for Comcast SportsNet that got pitched to the network as “Kung Fu meets fly fishing.” Realizing that his passion for film was probably best served be being firmly planted in the audience, Justin founded the Sheridan WYO Film Festival (currently accepting film submissions for 2019!) that takes place every October in Sheridan, Wyoming. Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Danny Taff, finished college in San Diego and ventured off to work on feature films and TV shows in LA. Eventually returning to Denver, he worked for Academy Award Winning Producer, Donna Dewey and her boutique production company in

literally every position and capacity. In 2009, he began freelancing as a Location Manager and worked his way up to Line Producer and Executive Producer. Based out of Flagstaff, AZ, Harlan Taney is the founder of 4 Corner Film Logistics, a company specializing in outdoor and adventure film production. With clients including national Geographic, BBC, Discovery Channel and others, 4 Corner Film Logistics provides innovative filming solutions and logistics for film production in challenging, remote and difficult-to-access regions. As a professional kayaker and adventure sports athlete, Taney developed a reputation for dependability in the extreme sports environment. Recently, Taney helped director Michael Brown and athlete Erik Weihenmayer realize the production of the film, The Weight of Water, working as one of the producers, cameramen and guide. Henna is the principal owner and filmmaker for Henna Taylor Films based in Boulder, CO. In 2018 she directed and shot Valley of the Moon, one of four films selected for the Reel Rock 13 Film Festival. Her documentary, Wadi Rum (33 min) won the Grand Jury Award at the 2018 Yosemite International Film Festival and was an official selection at Wasatch Mountain Film Festival, Ottawa Adventure Film Festival, Lebanese Independent Film Festival, among others.

Sarah is a self taught artist from Carbondale, CO. She uses art as a tool to convey environmental and humanitarian messages by teaming up with brands or organizations that share that mission. Her style is whimsical and rooted in her own joyful connection to nature. US MEN’S RAFTING TEAM

The US Men’s Rafting Team is making their second appearance at 5Point Film Festival. Their first appearance was in 2017 for their film Time Travelers, in which they raced the clock to attempt to break the world speed record on the Grand Canyon. Sam Price-Waldman, Chris Cresci, and Ben Mullinkosson are documentary filmmakers. They formed Rainhouse Cinema in 2012 and have been working together ever since.

BEN WEAVER

Ben Weaver is a songwriter and poet who travels by bicycle. He uses his music as a tool to strengthen relationships between people and their local ecosystems. Ben’s most recent project Music For Free saw him riding 3000 miles from Canada to Mexico along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route with his guitar and banjo making stops on the route to offer free performances to the communities along the way.

Ben has completed many wilderness music by bike tours, released nine studio albums and five books of poetry. Given the choice he, will side with the animals, lakes, rivers and the trees.

Erik Weihenmayer is the first blind person to reach the summit of Mt. Everest and the Seven Summits, the highest points on each content.

Amidst, a myriad of other adventures, Erik whitewater kayaked the 277 mile length of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Currently the Operations Director for Industry Nine Componentry in Asheville, NC, Wood is often found on her mountain bike, in a river, or visiting the community here in Carbondale.

FOREST WOODWARD

Forest Woodward is an internationally published and awarded photographer and filmmaker based out of Asheville, NC. With an eye towards issues of social and environmental justice, Forest’s recent projects have led him from the the fields of South Central Florida following stories of migrant farm workers, to the side canyons of Lake Powell investigating the water wars of the American West, and most recently to the front lines of climate change in the deep South Pacific. Throughout his work, Forest seeks to document his subjects in a way that transcends politics and prejudice and offers the viewer an opportunity to engage in relevant contemporary issues through a humanistic lens. Forest’s photographs have been widely published, with notable appearances in National Geographic, Esquire and The Atlantic. His films Food Chains and The Important Places have screened in dozens of countries, with festivals including Tribeca and Berlinale, receiving critical acclaim and an array of awards including “Best Short Film” from Banff Mountain Film Festival and the James Beard Award. When Jen Zeuner and Anne Keller moved to the tiny, conservative high desert town of Fruita, Colorado almost twenty years ago it was not on the map as far as mountain biking was concerned. It was a small and tight knit community without much economic vitality. Jen and Anne have left an inedible imprint on Fruita — at the outset they were on the fringe and a bit ostracized, they’re now at the very heart and soul of the community.When Jen and Anne arrived, Fruita was still underground as far as a mountain bike destination, but now it’s as renowned to cyclists as Moab, UT. Unlike Moab, Fruita isn’t just known for it’s riding – you go there to eat hot pie. Jen and Anne weren’t shy about using their lesbian innuendos to sell pizza, even from the beginning. Slogans like ‘friends let friends eat hot pie’ and ‘we snatch kisses and vice versa’ were on free stickers by the cash register even when Fruita wasn’t quite ready for it. Jen is a former competitive BMX rider and World Cup downhill mountain biker and Anne is a contributing photographer for Bike magazine, so when they’re not slinging pizza until they literally run out of dough, you’ll find them out riding their favorite loops with their dogs. Help clean up one of the most beautiful stretches of river in the country! Volunteers of all ages welcome! Join us for a FREE breakfast before cleaning up a section of the river. Prizes for: Best of Trash, Most Toxic, Most Useful, Most Unusual Trash, and Best Photo.

Come join Jaybird for a community group run up Red Hill.

Experience some of the Roaring Fork Valley’s classic single track on a 4 mile loop, topping out with an iconic view of Mount Sopris. Led by local trail runners in conjunction with Jaybird and special guest, Rory Bosio, from The Movement (screening during Friday’s film session). The group will meet at Independence Run + Hike and Dos Gringos at 9am to depart shortly thereafter.

PARTICIPANT INFORMATION Breakfast and registration starts at 8:30am at Lions Park and the Midland Spur side of Basalt Town Hall. Teams of 5-6 people are arranged, assigned a section of river, and head out to clean up around 9:15am. Entries of trash for prizes must be registered at Lions Park by 11:30am. Winners will be announced at 11:45am.
