In preparing for the 2020 census, the current administration tried to include a citizenship question, citing the need to prevent voter fraud. The Supreme Court ruled against it, writing that the voter-fraud issue was “contrived,” so there will be no citizenship question on the 2020 census.

The Census Bureau website is loaded with fascinating information about the history ofthe census. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Prohibition, so there’s a great article about that on the website. People can also look into genealogy there. Someone told me they had looked up their grandmother’s middle name using old census records. Decennial census records are confidential for 72 years to protect respondents’ privacy. Records from 1790 to 1940 are maintained not by the Census Bureau, but by the National Archives and Records Administration.

Individual census records from 1950 to 2010 can only be obtained by the person named, or their heir, after submitting a form.

So getting an accurate count in the census is really important. Young children are often not included in the numbers people report, especially when the parents aren’t living together. An inaccurate count can deprive a child ofcritical support and resources for their entire childhood. We all want our tax dollars to work for us in the way they are meant to, equitably. Please encourage everyone you know to make sure that they answer the questions on the census carefully and thoroughly.

The Prescott Public Library is making a special effort to help people understand and fill out the census. Check with library staff. You could even fill out the census online on the library’s computers.

Ifyou have specific questions about the census, the website is fabulous and very user-friendly. Go to census.gov for a wealth ofinformation, including the Census Bureau Statistics in Schools program, designed to educate children and their adults about the importance ofthe census.

Video Brings More Culture, Science and Ideas in the Prescott Area

At one point, I had a thought: “Wouldn’t it be cool to have your own traveling show, experiencing different cultures and perspectives?”

I’ve been living in Prescott for about ten years, as an educator and creator ofshort films. In my adult life I spend my free time traveling around the world gaining inspiration by interacting with different cultures and people. It’s these experiences that inspire the majority offilm ideas and insights. I realized that I didn’t have to leave Yavapai County to experience different cultures and hear new perspectives.

Everyone’s perspective makes our society diverse and beautiful. I heard a Holocaust survivor once say, “What makes life worth living is relationships with other people. We have one opportunity to help each other out. People are people no matter how they decide to show up in the world.” I want to contribute to this community as I grow. One way is to facilitate the narratives and perspectives ofour guests from the community, while making it entertaining for our audience.

I’ll be your host for the 5enses Podcast. I’m so excited about this project! The podcast will contain additional content to complement the monthly 5enses Magazine. This year marks the first anniversary of 5enses under the direction ofpublisher John Duncan, and I believe in the overall vision ofJohn and the staff. I admire their passion and willingness to get people’s voices out there.

We’re going to start offslow and build the vision through our process. We’ve spent the past few months intentionally organizing that vision. With this podcast we are creating another foundation for sharing knowledge within our community. I’m looking forward to sitting down with fellow community members to share their perspectives, insights and personal stories. I look forward to sharing conversations with you all.

It’s easy to confuse the issues. Most ofour communications with the public have been focused on negotiations between the City ofPrescott, AED, and leadership-team members ofSave the Dells, especially Chair Amber Fields and Vice-Chair Paula Burr. But lately you’ve been hearing more about a funding request made to the Arizona House ofRepresentatives. These are two distinct conservation-acquisition projects running on parallel, but very separate, tracks.

Day we had dozens ofpeople showing their support. That turnout really paid off, as the Lands and Agriculture Committee unanimously passed the bill. By the time you read this, the bill will have moved to the Appropriations Committee for more rigorous review. We plan on spending several more days at the capitol getting the support ofthe House and Senate Appropriations members.

Game ofTiaras: Disney Gone Dark, for Laughs

Apparently the old proverb “power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely” applies even to Disney Princesses. At least that’s the case in Game ofTiaras, a tonguein-cheek tragedy ofhysterical proportions.

The story begins when a king who must choose one ofhis daughters to take his crown. Sound familiar? But wait. His daughters just happen to be Disney princesses. But these are not the Disney princesses we all know. Quite the contrary, these chicks are cold-hearted, dare I say, bitches. They are unremorsefully and diabolically cruel, and hell-bent on revenge and murder most foul.

Please allow me to introduce you to Snow White. In this story, her prince has died in a shipwreck and she comes seeking help from the king.

Bad idea. Introducing Belle. She tries to help her friend Cinderella, but instead finds herselfin mortal danger. Meet Ellie, a maniacally evil Ice Queen (but certainly not to be confused with a copyrighted character of similar characteristics from a famous movie). These are just a few ofthe slew ofprincesses you’ll have the ghastly pleasure ofmeeting in this seriously twisted comedy from Don Zolides.

Bringing Game ofTiaras to the local theatre scene is yet another inspired choice ofJantina Russell, the innovative, cutting-edge theatre-arts teacher at Bradshaw Mountain High School in Prescott Valley. She explained that one ofher reasons for choosing this play is that it is written to be performed in the commedia dell’arte style ofacting, which originated in 16th-century Italy. This style contains the stock characters ofPantalone, or miserly merchant; the Dottore, or doctor, typically portrayed to be pedantic, gullible, and lecherous. El Capitano is the braggart soldier always boasting ofhis chivalrous adventures abroad, but who’ll run like hell at the first sign ofdanger at home. The Innamorati are the shameless lovers, who are never to be left alone, but seem to always have someone

spying on them from somewhere. We actually get the word “zany” from the Zannis, the peasant or immigrant servants, who were known for their crude and licentious buffoonery.

“These same stock characters are found not only in Shakespeare and other classical literature, but also in the silent films ofChaplin, modern day sitcoms, and even in cartoon series like The Simpsons and SpongeBob SquarePants,” explains Russell. “Many ofmy students were quite surprised that I actually chose this play to perform. They’re used to me doing either a classic play, or a play that takes a stand, or makes some kind ofsocial statement. But you know, sometimes you just have to go with something that has no redeeming qualities other than being just outrageously funny.”

And who among us couldn’t use a good laugh? Well, here’s your chance to get in on some serious chortles and guffaws. Be forewarned, when you play the Game ofTiaras, you either win or you die. Are you game?

Born in Chicago, Mary Heller has been coming to Prescott practically since she was in diapers. For that we can thank her grandfather, who won the family’s Prescott home playing poker upstairs at the Elks Theatre.

Over 32 years as choreographer and full-time dance educator, Mary has relentlessly pursed her life’s calling ofeducating people in the art and science ofdance choreography. “Dance is as much a universal language as music is. Ofall the arts, people are most uneducated about what a choreographer actually does. The creative process involved is a complete mystery to most people, and it shouldn’t be.”

And it won’t be ifMary has anything to say about it. Having earned her MFA in dance at Florida State University, she was a principle dancer with three professional companies based in Chicago.

Mary is current adjunct professor at Yavapai College and co-owner ofFusion Dance Company in Prescott Valley. She is also artistic director and principal choreographer ofher own professional international pick-up dance company, Sharing Ground, an original dance/music work between artists in Prescott, the south side ofChicago, and Baghdad, Iraq, through a two-way live feed.

“Sharing Ground will be applying innovative artistic methodologies with unprecedented new technology to create social change and community impact on the local, regional and international levels. “I want to show the world that together we can create something beautiful,” Mary enthused. Sharing Ground is currently accepting investors.

Mary’s unbridled passion for all things dance now has her choreographing the Yavapai College production of Chicago, the Musical. Asked about her biggest challenge in preparing for the show, she cited “honoring the Fosse vocabulary while still making the dances original, relevant and authentic.”

She added that since the college received an educational license for the show, they are obliged to use different sets, costumes and choreography. “It’s all a matter ofjigsawing different phrases to make a cohesive dance while honoring the director’s vision and working to each dancer’s strength. Dance is essentially nonverbal storytelling that uses movement in place ofwords, and the different movement sequences are called the dance vocabulary.”

I received quite an education conducting this interview. I had no idea it was King Louis XIV who formed the first ballet company, or that only men were originally allowed to dance ballet, since it was considered a purely masculine art form and principally used for nationalistic purposes.

I was also surprised to discover that the five classical ballet positions were actually taken from the art offencing, and that the French acrobat Leo Tard was the inventor of, what else, the leotard!

But perhaps most illuminating ofall was learning ofa study by Einstein Medical University concluding that dancing can make us not only healthier and happier, but smarter as well.

Mary explained, “Dancing kinetically challenges the brain with new mobility patterns, creating new neurons in the brain that help with up to a 100% increase in the cognitive development ofpeople over age 75.”

I was fascinated to learn that Chicago, the Musical is actually based on a 1926 stage play ofthe same name by Maurine Dallas Watkins. A former reporter for The Chicago Tribune, Maurine changed careers and became a successful American playwright and screenwriter. Using the stories she wrote while covering Chicago’s courthouse beat, Maurine

Set in the brash and bawdy 1920s amid hot-blooded showgirls and cold-blooded criminals, the play is a scathing satire ofthe criminal-justice system, combining two unrelated court cases ofreal-life vaudeville performers. Exploiting their sympathetic press treatment, they became the celebrity murderesses we’ve all come to know and love as Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly.

Maurine Dallas Watkins’ “crime doll novel” would one day serve as the inspiration for the longest running American musical in Broadway history, garnering six Tony Awards and the 2002 Academy Award for Best Picture! Eating Out Vegan? Prescott Has Options

t’s not easy being vegan. Especially ifyou have high culinary standards and you love to eat out to socialize.

The Prescott area is probably no better or worse than most places for vegan options, though cities like Phoenix are more likely have a plethora ofrestaurants with a vegetarian or vegan focus. My husband and I eat at restaurants with just enough options to suit us, or we stay at home.

Only four local restaurants pass the test ofhaving enough organic and local food and gluten-free and dairy-free menu items that are not too spicy. Digestive issues such as a hiatal hernia, lactose intolerance and inflammation caused by gluten forces us to be laser-focused on finding the right dishes that won’t set offproblems later.

Becoming a vegan wasn’t so much a choice as a necessity for my husband’s health, since he has lupus, and because I needed to maintain a healthy weight following menopause.

Previously I viewed vegans as a pain to deal with, going back 20 years when I was on a press trip to a ski resort in Colorado, where the one vegan journalist caused us all to wait on dinner while the chefwhipped together a special off-menu meal just for her. What I didn’t realize then is a lot ofpeople have been developing digestive issues since then, especially as Baby Boomers like us age. I have a lot more sympathy now, ofcourse.

Here are our favorite dishes from the restaurants we frequent.

The Raven Café

The only restaurant in town that advertises as being organic is The Raven. Not only do we enjoy the vibe there, but we also find a number of vegan and vegetarian dishes that we enjoy. My new favorite is the hummus bowl, which is colorful with its roasted red peppers and cucumber slices, kale, mushrooms, sunflower seeds on blended black beans, topped with fig champagne vinaigrette and deep-fried root veggie chips. Also the vegan nachos, the beet salad (sans cotija cheese), and the Harvest Bowl with sweet potatoes, roasted corn, kale crunch mix and wild rice (sans cotija) fit all our dietary needs and are feasts for the eyes. Cauliflower Tacos are also a fave. Sides ofsalad, avocado and sweet-potato fries make it easy to fill out a meal ifyou’re really hungry.

BiGA by Senses Restaurant

This tiny place does food right, provoking the right response from your senses as advertised, and using as many locally sourced vegetables as possible. From the Roasted Butternut Squash Toast (OK, this is not gluten-free) to the incredible salads— Winter Greens, House Salad, Roasted Root Vegetable Salad (sans mozzarella) and others that can be altered with avocado instead ofmeat, it has many great options. The Vegetarian “Meatloaf” Sandwich is not vegan, since egg holds it together, but it’s a viable option in a pinch. The restaurant is accommodating ifyou want to swap anything out or just go for the vegetable side dishes, which makes it a place we frequent.

Taj Mahal Restaurant

This is the only restaurant in town that has a clearly marked vegan section on its menu. We love Indian food, so this is a no-brainer for a quick eat-in meal or takeout. We enjoy everything on the vegan menu, but always order the mildest spice level to make sure indigestion doesn’t keep one ofus (me) up at night. Favorites are Yellow Lentil Soup, Vegetable Biryani, Vegetable Coconut, Aloo Ghobi, Dahl and Vegetable Curry. A mixed assortment ofnaan (not gluten-free), chutneys and jasmine rice round out the meals.

El Gato Azul Restaurant

A lot ofitems that would seem to be vegan are actually vegetarian because they are fried with a panko crust that includes an egg dip. Still, the variety oftapas makes enough options for us. The occasional pasta dish also works as a dinner entrée for me. The food we order includes Green Olive Tapenade, Black Bean Salad, Bruschetta, (Artichoke) Hearts ofBruschetta, Chips & Salsa, Marinated Mushrooms and Hummus with Pita.

Honorable Mentions

Farm Provisions doesn’t advertise itselfas having organic food any longer, but it does offer a vegan section with great options, such as Charred Heirloom Cauliflower, Five Mushroom Bisque, Arugula Salad, Vegan Tacos, Roasted Local Squash “Pasta,” Roasted Portobello Steak, and a Farmer’s Local Harvest ofgrilled vegetables.

Thai and Chinese restaurants have a few vegan options, but main courses tend to have chicken or beefbroth as bases, so I can’t in good conscience recommend most ofthem for true vegans. I’m not saying we don’t cheat now and then, but for the most part the restaurants listed have the right balance.

We hope, as more people give up meat and animal products, that veganism will be as acceptable as gluten-intolerance in restaurants. We’ll be eating at home a lot more than in the past until that day arrives.

he Yavapai Humane Society shelter is not far from the local dump or, as it’s properly referred to, the Transfer Station.

Does this mean trash resides within? No, it does not.

Like many other modern shelters, YHS adheres to a “no-kill” ethic. For eye and a deep, persuasive voice. the first time on record, the Best Friends Animal Society reports that the Timid dogs get a lot ofattention. Surprisingly, most dogs adapt well to shelter conditions.

They wag their tails as the kennel techs walk by, working it for a greatly appreciated scratch or a biscuit. Endlessly devoted volunteer dog walkers get them out for a breath offresh air .

Most dogs rapidly progress to the adoptions side ofthe operation, where excited families snatch them up. Cars hover at the entrance gate waiting for opening time in the mornings.

A few dogs don’t appreciate their rescues. They come in because they have behavioral problems to start or don’t have the constitution to thrive. Some faces are frightened. Others are defensive.

Canine Behavioral Specialist Matt Bourgoin and his team are there to help. Matt leads two other devoted staffmembers, and a few ardent volunteers, who specialize in transforming the dogs who aren’t the butt-wiggling, licking-your-face, jumping-in-your-lap kind. Matt first started serious study in dog training at age twelve. Thirty-four years later he has a degree in Canine Care and Handling from Yavapai College. It’s a pretty piece ofpaper, but doesn’t seem to matter much around YHS. Inter•Section•Solo Returns: Three Provocative Nights ofStorytelling

erformance art has never been an easy form to create, or to absorb.

Three decades ago I found myselfsharing a Hell’s Kitchen loft with a pioneering practitioner, and she used our space as a social center and collaborative think tank for her colleagues. I learned a lot. Performance art can be part poetry, part dance, part meditation and part heavy construction. It might include rage, or wit, or a search for identity, and it could use props to shock or amuse, maybe both. But always, at its best, performance art makes you think.

That, ofcourse, was a time and place when people actively sought out the stimulation ofnew ideas, instead ofwaiting for them to be packaged and delivered to their home screens. But you can still search out the provocative (and maybe dance, too) when Prescott College’s second annual Inter•Section•Solo Festival unfolds over three nights.

At last year’s debut, under the direction ofJay Ruby, two nights alternated performance art with poetry reading, to richly textured effect.

This year, four complete performances will spread over three nights, with the poetics built in. And the students have stepped up to administer the entire production. “It’s exciting. A lot more people, young people, are making it happen,” says performer Sivan Sartin. “There’s a lot ofenergy going into it.”

“It’s so important to support stories from different places,” adds Camille Osburn. “The way people in Prescott can do that is by coming to this festival. This is for everyone.”

Note: because Prescott College has sold its historic performance space, the Sam Hill Warehouse, the venue will change. The first two nights will be at The Porch, 226 N. Montezuma; the last performance on April 3 will be at the Crossroads Center at Prescott College. All performances start at 7pm. Here’s what to look forward to:

Fargo Tbakhi — Thursday, March 19

“Ifthere’s an ‘ask’ from the show, it’s to reflect on the way we are with each other, and how we can support each other more,” says Fargo Tbakhi ofhis solo. The Phoenix-based, 22-year-old queer Palestinian poet weaves a complex story around three central characters: himself, his immigrant father, and Sirhan Sirhan. “Don’t take one part out ofthe equation. You don’t get to be full.” He explores what it means to colonize, and to be stereotyped. He returns over and over to his core prop: threequarters ofa ton ofdirt, rich with metaphor. You may leave with a dusting ofit on you. And that’s the point.

Osburn and Molesworth team up for a duet: “Soft Bellies,” a somewhat parallel examination ofwhat it means to grow up from girl to woman, conveyed through dance and humor. “For me, right now, performance art is important because I want it to speak about change and possibilities,” says Molesworth. “Alternative ways ofbeing.”

rhyming history: home

history rhymes in the home: the door is a door from before it was this door. i cannot in my mind construct the city before the massacre. before they undergirded home with barbed wire. this is too simple. i suppose what i mean to say is that home is house. home is wooden bones. so i suppose what i mean to say is this: in the moments i feel at home in my body it is moving freely. it is dancing at a talking heads dance night, which rhymes with dancing at the local ambient noise show, which rhymes with tearing up the stage in a solo show, which rhymes with dancing alone in my room to sade. which does not rhyme with checkpoints. which does not rhyme with legs shot by snipers. which does not rhyme with movement under the thumb. these are the syllables ofhome: sniper, checkpoint, under-thumb. they do not rhyme with the syllables ofbody: talking heads, ambient noise, solo show, sade. where does this leave the song ofme? jangled, disjointed. no meaning here, no precision oflanguage. i suppose what i mean to say is this: layer home over body and something does not fit. ask me not to dance with history, i can’t do that. my father tells me he can dabke, and he’s pretty good at it. sirhan sirhan tells me bullet, bullet, bullet, they don’t want you here anyway, you might as well make it worth their while. do it for your country. when the syllables don’t rhyme just change the syllables. bullethole the letters until they are not in english anymore. now they are the language offear. now they are graffiti. look at that. they rhyme.

Larry Bogad — Friday, April3:

The festival will close a week later with Bay Area artist Larry Bogad, who will offer two performance pieces: “A Fair Fight” is a family story, his own, ofimmigrants in the Depression, including street fights, smuggling and prizefighting, culminating in a confrontation with the Ku Klux Klan.

His second piece goes for musical humor. In “Economusic: Keeping Score,” Bogad converts economic data into music, using voice, live instruments, and the audience as an instrument. An electronic app he made loops notes from 36 different instruments. It's darkly funny, and a commentary on the historical moment we're in.

Teacher Education, Their Own Way Local Fundraiser to Generate Scholarships

Entering Bowen’s Botanicals at 212 North Cortez in Prescott, you feel welcome but also curious about its purpose. It’s a florist, as branded, but most ofthe stock is tucked away in a refrigerated room. It has an ample selection ofherbal remedies, much geared to menstrual and menopausal concerns. Then there are the curio cabinets, filled with recently handmade objects alongside antiques curated with a somewhat steampunk sensibility. And taxidermy.

“I want to do my best to bring more attention to this part oftown,” says Cara Foster, proprietor ofBowen’s Botanicals, which opened last October. She named the business after Mary Bowen, a Prescott pioneer who once operated “Mrs. Bowen’s Hospital” in a house that previously occupied the site.

“I teach floral classes here, and plant-care classes, herbing classes. I have friends who are talented artists — metalsmiths, jewelry makers, painters — and I like to have their stuffaround me. I want everyone to have an opportunity to shine in their own right.”

But the big space, stretching back all the way to the alley, is clearly intended for an even more interesting purpose: gathering people.

“Besides being a flower shop, I try to do community events, professional networking mixers, live music. Art shows. Food trucks in back. Just to be a place where people can come and maybe learn or experience something new.”

True to that thinking, Bowen’s Botanicals will be hosting an unusual event on Thursday, March 26, 5-7pm, a fundraiser to help local teachers with their own continuing education while empowering them with their own choices.

Foster understands the need. She explains, “I was a teacher, then an instructional coach, then I went back to the classroom again here in Prescott. I found that the things teachers want to learn aren’t necessarily available to them, primarily because ofmoney. Every teacher I know lives paycheck-to-paycheck. And it’s not all about the salary schedule: they invest so much into their classrooms, emotionally and monetarily.”

As a teenager Foster apprenticed to a florist, then used those skills as a side gig during her teaching years.

“School districts get to determine what they want teachers to learn, and normally it’s like a blanket platform for some kind ofschool-reform initiative. Sometimes it’s about helping kids emotionally, or because the science standards have changed. Things like that are great, but teachers all have different needs. The special-area teachers, like art or physical education, and the support staffmiss out the most. It was so demoralizing to be a professional educator, but not be able to hone my craft.”

So Foster came up with a solution, and partnered with the United Way ofYavapai County. “What I want to do with this fundraiser is put money directly into the teachers’ hands,” she says, “so they can pick what they want to learn. There are amazing authors that come through Phoenix all the time, or curriculum initiatives. It’s limitless. For a teacher to pick their own professional development, they not only have to have the money for the professional development, which starts about $150 a day, but they have to pay for their own gas, their own food, maybe a hotel. We’re talking $500-800. Plus the time comes out ofyour sick days or personal days, and ifyou don’t have enough, it comes out ofyour paycheck.”

The goal ofthe fundraiser is to award at least one scholarship per year in each ofthe three local school districts: Prescott Unified, Chino and Humboldt. Donors can choose which district their generosity will benefit. “For now we’re starting small-scale, just asking for donations,” says Foster. “There’s no admission, and food and beverages are donated.

100% ofproceeds go to the teachers.” Gifts are tax-deductible, because the program is administered through the United Way. Recipients will be announced at the Live United Education Fair, April 18 at Mile High Middle School.

“For me it’s really important to be a part ofthe community and figure out different ways to service the community,” Foster explains. “Service to others is really important to me. That’s why I was a teacher for so long. I love Prescott and I want to give back as much as Prescott has given me.”

Mikado, Mirth & Magic Warm Up March at YCPAC

In this era ofhigh-definition television and multiple streaming platforms, there are times, honestly, when what’s on Hulu or Netflix or Amazon surpasses anything out in the community March is not one ofthem, though.

While central and northern Arizona struggle to break the clutches ofwinter, local stages like Yavapai College Performing Arts Center are giving audiences opera, magic, improv and a load ofgood reasons to venture out into the chill.

New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players: The Mikado — March 7

The origin story of The Mikado is that its creators — writer W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan — were struggling for new ideas in 1884 when a ceremonial Japanese sword fell from its mount on Gilbert’s wall. Like Isaac Newton’s falling apple, the sword inspired The Mikado, a colorful, weird and witty light opera of forbidden romance in feudal Japan.

Neither story is true. Gilbert and Sullivan gleefully mock the buffoonery ofBritish society and do it by cloaking their story in the guise ofMedieval Japan. So The Mikado, one ofthe most successful operettas of all time, is about as historically accurate as, say, The Muppet Show. But it is clever, beautiful to the eyes and ears, and a whole lot offun. In the hands ofskilled performers like the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players (who brought a brilliant production of The Pirates ofPenzance to YCPAC in 2017), every verbal subtlety, every clear pun, comic moment and glorious high note is struck to perfection. Ifyou’re looking for a pleasant distraction from the turbulence ofearly spring, and the frightening train wreck ofyour newsfeed, The Mikado is the best bet for your dollar.

Colin & Brad: Scared Scriptless — March 21

Improv comedy is a go-big-or-go-home proposition. Anyone who has ever sweated over a Powerpoint presentation is terrified by the prospect of laughter created between an audience member’s suggestion and the very next moment, when a host says “Go!” But when it’s good, improvisational comedy is comedy at its best. It’s edgy and spontaneous, created specifically for the audience

that night. Drew Carey’s syndicated television show Whose Line Is It Anyway? is a master class in improv, and alums Brad Sherwood and Colin Mochrie are two ofthe very best in this perilous business. YCPAC has chased their touring show, Scared Scriptless, for many years because ofits capacity to leave audiences gasping with laughter.

Sherwood and Mochrie make a remarkable duo — versatile, mischievous, daring and deadpan — and Scared Scriptless lets their fertile imaginations run wild. The laughs will come from pretty much everywhere, when you least expect it. So keep your hands and feet between the armrests and get ready to be drawn into the show. We can’t tell you much more than that, except it’ll be a lot funnier than your last Powerpoint.

Mike Super: Magic & Illusion —

March 27 Magicians are like mechanics. Ifyou find one that works for you, hold onto them for dear life. Mike Super has found great success as a kind ofunpretentious magician.

While other magicians slather on the eyeliner, strike dramatic poses and endeavor to trap/free themselves from hideous contraptions, Mike has more ofan everyman’s approach to magic. He creates and executes jaw-dropping illusions with a kind of“gee-whiz” persona that makes him a favorite with families.

The secret to Mike’s success is his natural ability to entertain and fascinate people. He has brought the art ofmagic back to the people by transcending the “trick” and connecting personally with his audience on a relatable level. Whether it’s through television, stage or simply one-on-one, Mike Super’s personality and humor reach out and enchant the public.

ArtTheft, Thieves Bereft

rt thievery has been with us since Aunt Oog surreptitiously swiped cousin Frag’s necklace ofrough-hewn river rocks chipped into the shape ofdead mammoths.

But sometimes I wonder ifthose who steal important works ofart have excellent taste, or are simply stupid.

Case in point: 23 years ago, Gustav Klimt’s Portrait ofa Lady was swiped from the Ricci-Oddi Modern Art Gallery in Piacenza, Italy. This caused no end oflocal anguish because the collection in the Ricci-Oddi is not exactly on a par with that ofthe Louvre or the Met, and the museum already had to deal with the problem ofbeing named Ricci-Oddi, which sounds like a character from an Italian science-fiction movie.

Herr Klimt not only had a very distinctive style, his work is considered among the masterpieces of fin de siècle Viennese art. It is instantly recognizable even by those with only casual interest in painting. Is the piece in question valuable? Inestimably so. Is such a work salable without heavily documented provenance? You would have an easier time filling a bag with volcanic pumice and trying to pass it offas moon rocks.

Why steal something ofgreat value you cannot sell? It may be that the filchers ofthis particular painting got cold feet, once the aforementioned logic finally penetrated whatever lobes ofprotein they used as brains. So they stashed the painting in a sack in a wall under the museum where, after 23 years, it was found by an inquisitive gardener.

Instances ofinvaluable art being stolen, only for the thieves to abruptly realize there is no way to sell their booty, occurs with surprising and stupefying frequency. In 1911 Picasso’s Le Pigeon aux petits pois was stolen from a modern-art museum in Paris, only for the thiefto realize what he had taken and subsequently dump the painting. It was never recovered.

Vermeer’s The Concert was taken from the Isabella Gardner Museum in Boston in 1990. There are 34 authenticated Vermeers in the entire world. I would almost prefer to think that the theft of The Concert was one ofpassion rather than for profit, and that the painting is sitting safely somewhere on the wall ofa wealthy but corrupt art aficionado. Should you happen to come across it and report its location to the authorities, you would be in for a nice reward, since the work is valued at $200 million. It disturbs me to think that, like Picasso’s Le Pigeon, the unsalable Vermeer may have ended up in a trash dump somewhere.

An icon ofmodern civilization and art is Edvard Munch’s The Scream, which is splashed across everything from tee-shirts to coffee mugs. Museum-quality prints are readily available from multiple sources. This widespread availability does not seem to make it any less irresistible to thieves, since the painting has been stolen from museums not once but twice (1994, 2004).

Most depressing ofall, we have the theft ofseven important paintings from the Rotterdam Kunsthal museum. To keep them concealed from the authorities, one ofthe Romanian thieves left the paintings with his moth-

er, who first hid them in an abandoned house, then buried them in a cemetery. When she heard that the police

Klimt's famedportrait was discoveredin a forgotten wall cavity. were looking for them, she eventually did what few actual thieves do with such plunder, even ifit is unsalable. She burned them.

The thieves who stole Henry Moore’s bronze sculpture Reclining Figure in 2009 had higher temperatures in mind; having the massive work cut up and melted down. Two tons ofbronze, in a sculpture appraised at roughly $4 million, were destroyed to realize perhaps a few hundred dollars as scrap. Fortunately, photos now exist ofevery major and many minor artworks scattered in museums around the world, so iftwits like the Moore thieves persist in their labors, nothing will disappear forever.

Almost forgot: in 1911 (what was it about 1911?) a trio ofItalian art thieves purloined the Mona Lisa (yes, that Mona Lisa) from the Louvre and made a clean getaway with their prize. After some time had passed, the purportedly brilliant ringleader tried to sell it to an art dealer in Florence. The notion that an art dealer in Florence would fail to recognize perhaps the most famous painting in the world, and therefore not notify the police, truly makes one marvel at the lack ofmental acuity in such individuals. Or at their chutzpah.

Famous artworks are better protected today, but none, not even the greatest ofthe Masters, is wholly safe.

So keep a tight lock and a close watch on your comic-book collection.

Someday the Louvre may come calling.

iPhone Astrophotography What’s Up? by Adam England

The pictures we see from ground and space-based telescopes are visually stunning.

The Hubble Space Telescope teases the imagination with colorful images from space, though its pictures are usually taken in monochrome and then layered with other images. These may be filtered for certain colors such as red or blue, or with cameras designed to see features not visible to the human eye, such as infrared or X-ray. When these filters are combined, they allow us to see regions ofa nebula or features ofa distant galaxy that we would not otherwise be able to discern.

Many local astronomers here in the Prescott area have ventured into the world ofastrophotography, with quite the success. Setups often include backyard observatories, telescopes with mirrors of14” or larger, high-tech cameras, and computer equipment to control it all. A great example ofthis can be seen at StillmanImaging.com, where local amateur astronomer JeffStillman has curated his best images, a compilation of years ofpatience, self-education, hard work and ofcourse a serious lack ofsleep.

My nine-year-old son and I recently attempted our own backyard astrophotography with what most people have readily available — a smartphone. Starting with a dark sky and steady mount, we took multiple images while testing different exposure times of the winter constellation Orion.

Then, using our telescope and an inexpensive adapter from Amazon, we located a few objects within Orion. The dimming star Betelgeuse was clearly a different color than the brighter star Rigel, visible as yellow-orange and blue, Adam England respectively. We also looked at the Orion Nebula and were able to define the clouds ofhydrogen gas and dust with colors ofblue and purple. We are anxious to continue learning and perfecting the art of iPhone astrophotography.

Green-winged Teal Birdofthe Month by Russ Chappell

The smallest dabbling duck in North America, the male green-winging teal, sports a cinnamon-colored head with a brilliant green crescent extending from the eye to the back ofthe head. Females are primarily shades ofbrown, but both sexes display deep-green wing patches in flight.

They dabble on the water by dipping their heads to reach submerged food. Possessing small filtering projections (lamellae) on the inner edges oftheir bills, they are able to feed on smaller food than other dabbling ducks can, and primarily dine on invertebrates and seeds found in shallow water, near shorelines and in agricultural fields. Other prey include midges, tadpoles and crustaceans.

Courtship peaks in January and February. The males seduce females with elaborate courting moves and exotic calls. Pairs remain together during migration and on breeding grounds, with the male defending his mate from other males, only to desert her once incubation begins!

The female chooses a well-concealed nesting site on the ground that provides dense cover, often forming a canopy over the nest, usually within a couple hundred yards ofthe water.

Shaping a nesting bowl with her feet, she lays her first egg, then adds grasses, sedges, and leaves, using her bill to construct a nest six to seven inches wide and two to six inches deep. After laying her last egg, she adds personal down feathers, and incubation begins, lasting 20-23 days.

Chicks hatch with eyes open, covered in yellow and olive-brown down.

Green-winged teal are not on the 2014 State ofthe Birds Watch List. The oldest known green-winged teal was a female over 20 years old, based on banding data.

This is the season for adding these small dabblers to your 2020 list as they forage on Prescottâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s local lakes and wetlands. Although they often mingle with other dabbling ducks, they are easily identified by their small, compact silhouettes, riding high on the water, and the unique non-ducklike whistling calls vocalized by the males.
