Once an artist ...

Driving

through the twisting pine lined streets of Prescott, winding up hills toward the mountains in this still-small town, you can expect to run into someone you know.

Melody McConaughy. I know her.

McConaughy has been a vibrant, enthusiastic member of the Prescott community for more than 19 years.

She’s closely involved with Arts Prescott Gallery and ’Tis Art Center & Gallery’s STEPS program — a free

after-school art education program for children. This comes as no surprise: McConaughy was formally a professional educator who taught every grade before high school and was principal.

McConaughy minored in art in college. She laughs as she talks about being an artist at heart but needing a backup plan. In an isolated area in California, McConaughy brought her love of art into the classroom and was also an art education speaker, consultant, and mentor teacher. Today, she realizes it was her lifelong passion for art and her drive to be an artist that gave her an advantage at a time when

there were fewer women in administrative positions.

In Prescott, McConaughy finds herself fortunate to be in a gallery with 24 people who are grounded and part of the community she now calls home.

Then & now Walking into her detached home studio, McConaughy stopped to show me a pin that she found in the desert of the small California town where she used to live. It’s a small, rectangular piece of metal, worn and old, but it glows with a life of its own. McConaughy says it’s been a major inspiration, that when she holds it she can almost feel its story. She imagines it belonged to a woman traveling west in a covered wagon. Tired and dusty, the woman dropped it or lost it somehow.

This pin led her to hunt for treasures in deserts and, later, junk yards.

Over the years, McConaughy’s art has evolved because she never makes the same thing for too long.

She remembers using found objects long before the “recycled art” trend. At the time, she was making art objects she calls “guardians,” which loosely look like figures affixed to weathered wood. They’re much more than that, though: McConaughy uses different shapes and sizes of wood, parts of elaborately carved picture frames, metal leaves, and rusted metal pieces including bed springs and refrigerator condenser bits. This discord of shapes makes up the guardians’ bodies; their heads are the bottoms of jars, more often than not, affixed to vintage spoons and broken glass separated from their original functions. Lovingly coaxed into life from found objects, each piece is unique and has a life of its own.

A guiding light Although she participates in the Recycle Sante Fe Art Festival, she’s realized she’s not comfortable following current trends.

“The word ‘recycled’ was abused, and I became disillusioned,” McConaughy says.

After years of experimenting, evolving, and creating, McConaughy is forging a new paths to express her creativity. It involves free-form hand-blown glass pieces that she fashions into “nightlamps.” After apprenticing with several glass artists, McConaughy has settled into using throwaway pieces of blown glass from art students and teachers. She points at a big bucket of colorful bits in the corner of the studio and then to her kiln that she uses to melt and form the beautiful, colorful shapes that perpetually glow in front of socketted nightlights.

McConaughy’s excited about this newest venture and it shows as she explains the nightlamps are affordable, transportable, and meaningful art that people can take away from her hometown gallery. Ultimately, she’s set her sights on a wholesale line of these nightlamps. Because of the infinite variations in the glass she uses, no two lamps are entirely alike, so she’s sure she’ll never become bored with these creations.

These glowing beauties just may combine all of McConaughy’s favorite techniques and materials. Still, “I will be making something creative, regardless,” she says, no matter what path she follows. ***** Melody McConaughy’s artwork is currently showing at Arts Prescott Gallery. Around ... ... the Corner

By Ruby Jackson Chances are you’ve heard of the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. It draws vendors and buyers from the world over and is quite a big dealio.

The Prescott Gem and Mineral Show is, in contrast, a much smaller show, but it’s definitely a quality show. This is the event’s 10th anniversary. Savvy buyers will find nearly 50 vendors selling rocks, gems, jewelry, fossils, beads, equipment, and more.

It’s been gaining notoriety and kudos these last several years, and, for the first time, is at Tim’s Toyota Center.

The show runs 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2-4. There’s a nominal entry fee, but kids under 12 are free. Shine on.

Acker Night is a much-celebrated December event, but fans can get downtown (get it?)10 a.m.-9 p.m.

Speaking of December, I usually only head out to Walker in search of winter fun, but the Walker Fire Department is hosting a promising open air Art Market. It’s 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 10 at 5881 E. Walker Road. About 50 vendors are selling art, crafts, antiques, and other miscellaneous goods. It’s a swell excuse to take a drive on one of the prettiest roads in town.

The 10th annual Western History Symposium is 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Hassayampa Inn. History buffs need plan on attending as educators, authors, and historians converge to present a day of programs on the Old West, including tales of Prescott and the Arizona Territory. The event is co-sponsored by the Sharlot Hall Museum and the Prescott Corral of Westerners. If you’re intrigued but can’t make the event, keep

in mind that the Corral meets for dinner every first Thursday of the month at the Hassayampa with a Western history topic presentation following chow down.

This year’s Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering is Aug. 8-10 at the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center. The event centers on the culture of the American cowboy and includes more than 70 poets and singers performing in nine venues over the course of three days. This year marks their silver anniversary, and although day sessions are free, I encourage you to spend a little coin on night performances.

Texas artist Mary Bechtol will be featured this month at the fabulous new Textiles & Textures Artisans Studio at 217 N. Cortez St. Bechtol’s brush hits like a firefly, illuminating the canvas, playing with texture and imagination. She limits her palette to four or five colors, and, according to her bio, “paint[s] less to depict the landscape than to capture the colors.”

The result is stunning. Being a studio, Textiles & Textures is also constantly

hosting myriad activities and events.

Offerings thus far have ranged from summer apron making to artist jams to fabric/trim/notions sales. Surely, there’s something to delight everyone.

The Granite Creek Labor Day Festival, which is on the weekend of Aug. 31, sounds like a great way to wrap up summer. Granite Creek Vineyards offers USDA organic wines with no added sulfites grown on their bucolic grounds in Chino Valley. Pleasing noses with their newest wines, ears with live music courtesy of Filabusta and The Jukes, and taste buds with the delectable cuisine of Block Six Catering (à la Chef Chris Bamberg), this is a harvest gala worth attending. ***** A native of the Windy City, Ruby Jackson is a freelance writer and collector of Norfin Trolls. me if you’ve heard this one: Vincent van Gogh, Helmut Vogel, and Annie Alexander walk into a sunflower field.

Van Gogh smiles and paints an image exploring the violent explosion of life and death that inspires generations of artists and art lovers.

Vogel smiles and pens a mathematical formula predicting the dizzying spirals of their florets that has myriad engineering and design applications.

Alexander smiles, and the Prescott resident hatches a plan that spreads smiles to countless people and benefits our less fortunate denizens.

OK, not much of a punch line — but it’s true. And it’s heartwarming.

For nearly two decades, Alexander has sold fresh sunflowers at 204 N. McCormick St. Proceeds go to The Smile Project, the nonprofit she started to help area homeless get dental work.

Summer sales are on the honor system — Alexander insists that’s an integral part of this — and the project usually raises a few hundred dollars. Some years The Smile Project can help dozens of homeless; some years it can only help a few.

And now they’ve got helping hands: Inspired by the project, Sergio Montes and Prescott Dentistry helped 28 people on June 28.

Indeed, Alexander and her sunflowers — and her neighbor’s, after her yard was consequently colonized — have made countless people smile.

Why jazz?

By Mike Vax First of all, let me say I’m thrilled to be asked to write a monthly column for 5enses.

I hope that you, the reader, will enjoy my thoughts on music and how it relates to our everyday world.

Since August is the month of the Prescott Jazz Summit, I’d like to talk about the heritage of jazz music in our country.

Quite a few years ago, Congress designated jazz music as a “National Treasure” and “America’s Original Art Form.” These aren’t just catchy quotes; they’re important facts. Jazz music really is the only art form “invented” in our country. Many other artistic endeavors have been brought to great heights here, but they were originally developed in other countries.

Jazz

music really did start in New Orleans. That’s because of the many different cultures that were brought together in that area at the same time. Rhythms and vocal traditions from Africa, melodies and musical forms from Europe, excitement and joy from the Cajun community, and even influences from South America and the Caribbean were in the mix. These musical and cultural interactions formed a style of music that originally had no name.

There’s a story that a classical reviewer from the Times-Picayune newspaper in New Orleans hated the new music and said that it sounded like the “braying of a jack ass.” The musicians, as a protest of that article, made a contraction and called the

music “jass.” There are other stories about how it became “jazz,” but I’ll leave those for another time.

Early

on in New Orleans, the music was mainly played outside for parades, cakewalks, parties, dances, and, yes, even jazz funerals. (Originally, the only jazz funerals were for jazz musicians themselves.)

The music was learned by ear as many of these early musicians were self-taught and couldn’t read music.

The tunes were learned much like folk tunes, work songs, and hollers were learned before. The musicians played the songs for each other, and they memorized them by playing songs over and over again. Early improvisation (a key factor in jazz) was based on the melody. Later on, musicians learned about chord changes and more advanced improvisation. I’ll talk more about this as we progress.

cold and flu season is upon us.

Kids will be back in school shortly sharing glue, crayons, pencils, books, bathrooms, and, inevitably, germs.

Maintaining health while those around us sneeze and sniffle is a challenge we all face every year. Fending off the cold and flu virus requires that you extract as much immune boosting nutrition from your diet as possible. I was ever so lucky to be blessed with a weakened immune system from birth. Through trial and error, I can attest to the benefits of loading up on the foods and spices that are proven to strengthen the immune system and that pack the biggest nutritional punch.

Of course, avoiding processed foods, grains, and sugar will prove paramount in your efforts to strengthen your immune system. However, you can do even more by incorporating foods all year round that are loaded with specific immune boosting nutrients.

Outlined below and based on my research of multiple scientific studies is what I consider to be the absolute best foods you can eat to help protect yourself this season. This, by all means, is not an exhaustive listing, but it’s quite comprehensive.

8. Mushrooms: Mushrooms strengthen your immune system because they’re rich in protein, fiber, vitamin C, B vitamins, calcium, and other minerals.

9. Teas: The two best types of tea for fending off microinvaders are matcha green tea and tulsi tea.

10. Herbs and spices: There are far too many immune boosting herbs to summarize in a one page article. So, here are a few of the top contenders that deserve special mention; garlic, honeysuckle, licorice, turmeric,

black pepper, oregano, cinnamon, peppermint, and ginger.

By Alan Dean Foster We live in an age when some folks desperately seek to avoid knowledge.

Indeed, they actively work to escape from its very presence. They’re not hermits. They enjoy the company of others, are perfectly sociable, work normal jobs, and have relatively ordinary daily lives. But they can’t stand, or can’t cope with, or just desperately desire to avoid the flood, the tsunami of information with which our contemporary society is inundated 24-7. There’s even a name for it.

Epistemophobia.

Fear of knowledge. Foremost among these poor souls are the many who refuse to watch television news or read any news-related media such as newspapers (you remember those—an ancient means of communication that utilized ink sprayed on fragments of bleached dead trees), magazines, or worst of all, the Internet. These folks refuse to allow daily news into their daily lives because it’s all so damn depressing, downbeat, and demoralizing. To those suffering from epistemophobia, the world is going to hell in a handbasket and, as far as they’re concerned, they want to encounter as little about it as possible.

But,

you know what? Overall, the world is actually in much better shape than it’s ever been. There are no major wars raging between blocks of nations; famine is an occasional instead of daily fact of life in increasingly isolated parts of the world; a great many debilitating diseases have not only been brought under control but have been completely wiped out; people in formerly isolated countries can talk to relatives in the most developed cities; and much more. Popular entertainment is cheap and ubiquitous, we’re well on our way to brokering the existence of a common language (English, if only for purposes of doing business), and cultural and economic isolation is a thing of the past for most of the planetary population.

So, then, why all the angst? Why all the depression, the bemoaning, the constant letters to the editors decrying the current state of morality in the world?

Blame the knowledge revolution.

C’mon,

ya’ll. Take a good, careful look around you. Things aren’t worse than they were in “the good old days.”

The difference now is that in the good old days, if somebody in Milan went on a rampage and stabbed half a dozen fellow citizens, nobody in Chicago ever heard about it. If Count Whackapeon of Upper Depravia arbitrarily decided to slaughter a village or two, folks in Philadelphia remained ignorant of the outcome. And if there were a couple of murders and rapes and a bit of arson on the Barbary Coast in San Francisco, it all passed unnoticed in New York.

The difference now is every one of those incidents would be fodder for the evening news, sandwiched in between what the Kardashians intend to call their next offspring (I believe South is still available) and why the local professional baseball team’s thirdstringer catcher’s batting average has fallen off. Beyond such piffle, you get only the bad news, leavened occasionally by a single feel-good human interest story drawn from one of the other five inhabited continents.

And

that’s just television. On top of that, you have the daily ration of radical ratiocination that strives to persuade you that the apocalypse, in one form or another, is just around the corner, and here, today by golly, is proof positive of it. If a bus goes off a cliff in Peru, killing everyone on board, then clearly one should never ride aboard a Peruvian bus. If a village is burned in the Congo, then Africa is plainly off-limits.

On the evening news, Fox News’ “World Minute” has to be my exemplar of this obsession with global morbidity. In 60 seconds you learn, basically, that everything is bad. The world is overwhelmed with death, destruction, and devastation. There is no

hope, no chance for improvement, and you might as well pack it all in because life tomorrow will never be as good as it was yesterday.

Then they try to sell you a Disneyworld vacation.

Or hemorrhoid medicine.

I

feel for the epistemephobiacs. I really do. But it’s a treatable phobia. The same technology that enables a farmer in the Punjab to learn that there’s a drought in Iowa also allows him to adjust the price of his harvest accordingly. Whoever wins their local talent contest becomes an instant feel-good story.

There’s ample good news out there, and it’s just as readily available as the bad news. The difference is that in contemporary media, good news doesn’t sell as many sleep aids, or cars, or carpets.

Don’t become an epistemephobiac. There’s wheat among the chaff, even if media prefers to bombard you with the chaff. Knowledge empowers; it shouldn’t inhibit.

I assure you that there’s no need to hide from a world that’s actually better in nearly every way than it used to be — if only for the existence of indoor plumbing and aspirin. You just have to be your own filter, technology-wise.

Don’t be afraid to research your own news. “I

love when it starts, and I love when it ends.”

That’s Slade Graves. She’s talking about painting, but the sentiment probably runs deeper. Let’s stick with painting for now.

“It’s usually from large to small, but I’m not a formula person,” Graves says waving at a nearby work-in-progress in a storage unit-come-art studio in Prescott.

There’s a tall, ethereal woman (the description fits Graves equally well) and a handful of circus performers — a clown, an organ grinder, and a small, central figure drawn in meticulous detail void of paint.

“Sometimes I see a color, like that green up there, and that’s where it starts,” Graves continues, this time gesturing toward a smear of green mostly on a wall-mounted canvas, a dab on the wall. “Sometimes it’s words or scribbles. … It’s always different.”

Graves’ subjects are figurative but far from simple. Colors and textures are nuanced — skeletal sketches protrude through all but the heartiest folds of paint — but they’re cast in broad, bold juxtapositions. Classic stories and compositions abound. There are religious riffs and fairy tales; there are golden ratios and Möbius strip flows.

Too pretentious? (Yup.) Graves’ art looks like the way people describe dreams: a throng of the familiar and the unexpected, of the infuriatingly vague and the infuriatingly specific. It’s haunting.

“I’m always rethinking things,” Graves says. “I never hold on to any concept, idea, movement, or color.”

She’s not afraid to gesso the bulk of a canvas just to rescue a single detail in the corner.

That same philosophy is why she’s embraced, rejected, and returned to life as a professional artist.

“I’ve found pictures that I did as a kid — even little awards for them — but I don’t remember doing any of that,” she says. “I just kind of lived my life.”

Most of her childhood was in Phoenix, but Graves occasionally visited a family house in Prescott. She liked the proximity and familiarity here.

After tougher-than-average adolescent years, Graves wandered. Lots of jobs. Lots of places. She settled in Prescott.

“And then, I don’t really know,” Graves says. “I just fell into art.”

(Prying ensues.) Truth be told, it was a creative outlet, a way to process interpersonal drama.

Art was catharsis, “kind of a scream,” she says. “A way to have some me time.”

At that point, maybe 25 years ago, she was self-taught. Then she got serious, 12-hours-a-day-in-the-studio serious. She devoured art academia, styles and media, iconography, you name it. While finishing up a degree at Arizona State University, she painted in Prescott and taught art classes at Yavapai College.

“We were both teaching there,” says Tim (Graves), who was in the clay and hot glass studio and took one of Grave’s painting classes.

“The first thing I ever asked her was, ‘What am I supposed to do?’” Tim says. “‘Well, do whatever you want to do.’”

he continues, affecting a feminine singsong. “That’s pretty much Slade as far as being spontaneous and just letting it go and following whatever feels right.”

Smitten, they married. Twenty years later, they’re still smitten and have two grown children.

Under the big top The tipping point was an arts expo at Jacob Javits Convention Center, in New York City.

It was, what, the mid-1990s? Graves and her husband were living in Chino Valley. She wanted a shot at the big time.

The real professional art circuit. They mortgaged the house to pay the entry fee.

“We put everything, all the art, in a big truck,” Graves says. “It was very emotional.”

And very worthwhile. Graves sold everything, all the art.

She also made contacts, including Joel, a man from a Canadian ad agency who became her patron and agent.

Her art, previously at four galleries scattered across the country, entered the world market. By the turn of the century, she’d arrived.

“A big mogul says we’re going to do this, and we did,” Graves says.

“I learned so much. And I learned enough not to do that again.”

It was bittersweet. Graves retained creative control of her artwork, but her agent controlled how and where it was presented. Pressure mounted.

“That’s when I started painting the circus stuff,” Graves says.

In retrospect, she continues, it’s glaringly obvious: the exciting, punchdrunk atmosphere, the dark, morbid detail, the tall female protagonist, and the mighty, diminutive ringmaster.

Still, these circus pieces share much in common with Graves’ Madonnas, fairy tales, religious figures, and even her jagged 9/11 series: They reveal the universal themes of life and death, joy and heartache, and rebirth at the core of every personal narrative.

Ultimately that theme and relationship with her agent crumbled.

Endings & beginnings “Why aren’t you painting, Slade?”

That’s Ray Johnson. Dr. Ray Johnson, actually. More on him in a bit.

When he ran into Graves a couple of years ago, she was working in a supermarket. She hadn’t painted for years.

“I was taking care of my mom,” Graves explains, alluding to medical issues that prompted a partial move to Phoenix. “I got involved in the art scene down there, but … I was going through a lot of emotional stuff.”

As her mother’s situation worsened, Graves pulled away from painting. Art, it turns out, wasn’t a panacea.

“I didn’t want to do it again,” Graves said. “I call it a sabbatical, but that’s only so other people understand.”

Yoga helped, but teased out other lingering issues.

When Graves moved back to Prescott two and a half years ago, she dabbled in art, but couldn’t commit to being a full-time artist again.

That’s where Johnson enters the picture. Johnson began collecting Graves’ work a decade ago. When she gave him the I’m-on-a-break routine, he asked if she had any work for sale. He ended up buying everything she had left — 10 pieces or so — and hung them in the lobby of his practice, Arizona Dermatology Group.

But he didn’t stop there. After more time had passed, he offered her part of a storage unit as studio space where she could resume painting. Zero pressure. Johnson became her new patron.

“Sure, Slade and Tim and I are friends, but it’s more than that,” Johnson says. “She’s got a rare creative talent, and it’d be a shame if she couldn’t continue developing that.”

Graves accepted the offer. But it was unclear what would follow.

Forward Graves’ mother died in April.

“Shortly after she died, I realized I’d been holding back,” Graves says through tears. “Everything started coming back.”

She started painting again.

“I’m really excited, but I’m also scared,” Graves continues. “But scared isn’t the right word.”

As one chapter of her life closes, it appears she’s ready to embrace art again.

“I’m getting into graffiti. Street art,” she says. “The words have always been in my work before, but, I don’t know, maybe they’ll be more prevalent now.”

Tim says it’s great to see her in the studio again. Especially on her own terms. “(Creativity), it’s definitely not Burger King: You can’t ‘have it your way,’” he says. “It’ll be interesting to see where she’s headed now … but it’s not my place to push her.”

Learning a new medium is a big part of the incentive for Graves.

“Learning to do this, right now, I’m a baby,” she says.

While she’s grown into the role as a creator, as the mother, Madonna, now she gets to start again, as the child.

Still, Tim asserts, this is just a twist on what she’s done all along.

“It’s normal for her to take a creative bent with whatever she’s doing,” he says. “Everything can be repurposed, reused on a creative level. Everything.” ***** Slade Graves is a Prescott-based artist whose work has shown at local, national, and international galleries.

Highlands Center for Natural History’s Outdoor Outings

A fungi-filled forest

as it may same, this network is extremely important to the health and well-being of the forest. Basically, the roots of plants and trees have agreed to work together with mycorrhizae. The fungus, with its widespread network, attaches to roots and helps secure moisture and nutrients in the soil that plants can access. In turn, plants produce sugars

soon as the rains commence at the Highlands Center for Natural History, I scan the grounds for fungi.

Among the Ponderosas, I find mushrooms called Slippery Jacks. They’re chunky and yellowish and have a spongy cap that’s super slippery when wet.

The Inky Cap is particularly delightful. I’ve found loads of ’em under the Willow next to the flagpole here. I like inky caps because you can watch them change and develop over time.

Inky caps grow in clusters, are rather tall, and often slender. With their irregularly edged cap draped over their stem they resemble Cousin It. Their common name is Shaggy Mane. As each day passes, caps break down and create an ink that washes away with rain. This is a method of spore dispersal.

It

can be challenging to keep mushroom specimens, so take pictures to help with identification. Snap shots of the top and bottom of the cap, the stem’s base, and where the stem and cap meet.

August’s hummingbirds

is a magical time for those who enjoy watching hummingbirds. The migration route for many species goes right through Arizona’s Central Highlands. In addition to our summer residents — Anna’s, Black-chinned and Broad-tailed hummingbirds — Rufous and Calliope hummingbirds are also passing through.

Where are they headed? Most hummingbirds that summer in North America winter in Mexico or Central America — no small feat for birds weighing only 3-4 grams.

Migrating hummingbirds need increased body fat stores. You can help by putting out nectar feeders. The key to attracting a lot of hummingbirds is using feeders with six to eight feeding ports. in the forest, a round tan ball the size of a half-dollar is pushing through the leaf litter.

Encouraged by monsoonal moisture, this fungal ball’s arms open into a star. Then they expand exposing a small white pouch to the sky to welcome rain that, in turn, releases spores. These spores travel with the wind and rain until they find a suitable soil home t0 create a new community.

The ball is called an earthstar because it looks like a star — a very small one, mind you — that’s fallen from the sky.

Earthstars are actually the fruiting body of an underground network of fungi called mycorrhizae. When conditions are rife, the network reproduces.

Historically, ink from these mushrooms was used for writing.

While neither of the mushrooms are edible, they’re fascinating finds that offer a glimpse into the wonderful world of fungus in our forests.

Earthstars are great fun. When you find one, take it home and try letting it dry out then re-wetting it. You can find earthstars year-round, but they’re most common after periods of moisture under stands of oak or manzanitas. Now that the earth is moistened by monsoons, it’s time to hunt.

News From the Wilds

The

rains, at long last, have come. And in the high temperatures and ubiquitous sunlight of late summer, this is the most exuberant, fertile time for the Central Highlands.

Many of our woody plant species bear seeds now — from delicious Chokecherries to the small, nutritionpacked acorns of our various oaks — while herbaceous plants grow and bloom, most of whom didn’t appear in the spring. This is the time of plenty for many birds and mammals as insects proliferate — from the moths and midges to the peak of the dragonflies and the first glimmerings of cicada song.

Our most water-dependent creatures, such as snails and mushrooms, appear now, species rarely associated with the desert Southwest.

Arizona is home to at least 200 species of native snail, most of whom are completely unstudied. You can see them consuming riverside vegetation during this wet season.

Our species of fungi number in the thousands (just in Arizona!) and, likewise, are substantially unstudied. From

brittlegills to puffballs to earthstars, they present a bewildering diversity from now until fall. Their fruiting bodies are the only part of a mushroom we typically take note of, but this is a small part of the organism: The real fungus is a network of filamentous mycorrhizae who interlace (and often enrich) the soil. In fact, the largest organism on Earth is thought to be a single mushroom in Oregon who’s 2,400 acres in size.

Butterflies, moths, beetles, dragonflies, and damselflies are prolific during this monsoonal season. Many of the butterfly species out now fly only during this time of year. The damsels and dragons, groups notably absent during the spring, are virtually everywhere now from parking lots to lakes.

Our flagship post-monsoon butterfly is the Arizona Sister (Adelpha eulalia), who glides over riparian clearings near oak stands. Look also for Buckeyes, Queens, and the stray Monarch.

At night, leave your porch light on and look at the creatures it draws. You’ll see scarab, rhinoceros, and longhorn beetles; tiger, Saturn and silk moths; as well as the odd nocturnal wasp or mantid.

A very brief survey of what’s happening in the wilds ...

High mountains • Golden Columbine (Aquilegia crysantha) flowers by cooler mountain streamsides.

• Little Brown Bats (Myotis lucifugus) continue nursing their young. Their roosts are often in caves or cavities in trees, but sometimes they roost communally in buildings.

Amazingly, a nursing mother can eat up to 110 percent of her body weight every night in insects, many of which are pests to humans.

Visit: Spruce Mountain Loop Trail, No. 307.

Ponderosa Pine forests • Coffeeberry (Rhamnus californica) bears its delicious black fruits, which have a sweet coffee flavor and a large coffee bean-like seed.* • Scarlet Creeper (Ipomoea cristulata) begins growing. Look for vines growing with two different types of leave: One is horned and bi-lobed; the other is longer and tridentshaped. By fall, these vines cover large areas.

Pine-Oak woodlands • Arizona Walnut (Juglans major) seeds mature on these elegant, uncommon trees.

These nuts have served as valuable food sources for many indigenous groups, and the husks were made into a deep black paint.

• Chokecherries (Prunus virginiana) bears fruit. These fruits can be small and tart or

large and sweet depending on the year. When larger, they rival store-bought cherries for sweetness and outdo them in flavor.* • Oaks of all species bear acorns providing the largest overall food crop of the year for mammals and birds — most notably the Acorn Woodpecker.

Pinyon-Juniper woodlands • Sacred Datura (Datura wrightii) flower exuberantly in the evenings. These large white trumpet-flowers glow in the dusk attracting moths and bats. This species has been mistakenly described as having hallucinogenic properties, a piece of terrible misinformation that has resulted in many poisonings and some permanent blindness. Fruit and leaves of Datura should NEVER be ingested.

Visit: Tin Trough Trail, No. 308.

Grasslands • Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) begin their great seasonal flowering here in the Southwest, their native home. Look for “longhorn” Melissodes bees and iridescent green Agapostemon and Augoclora bees foraging on their flowers.

Visit: Mint Wash Trail, No. 345.

Riparian areas • Creeks run exuberantly often overspilling their banks.

• Many species of dragonflies and damselflies hawk over water patrolling territories. Look for bluet and rubyspot damsels as well as spiketail, saddlebag, and skimmer dragons — especially the massive Giant Darner (Anax walsinghami), who has up to a 5.5” wingspan and is the largest dragonfly in the U.S. • Arizona Grape (Vitis arizonica) bears fruit.

These small grapes are reminiscent of Concord grape though they have larger seeds.* Visit: Lower Wolf Creek Falls Trail, No. 384.

Deserts/Chaparral • As Coyote Gourd (Cucurbita palmata) and other squashes flower, native Xenoglossa and Peponapis bees begin pollinating them and sleeping in the flowers in the afternoon.

The Coyote Gourd isn’t edible, although our cultivated squash are beginning to flower also.

Look for the flowers of any squash or gourd once it has closed and pull them open gently to look for these bees. They are extremely gentle and will not sting unless harassed.

This is typically one of the brightest showers of the year with up to a meteor per minute at the peak. The waxing crescent moon sets by midnight leaving perfect dark skies for viewing. The radiant point (where meteors appear to be radiating from) is Perseus to the northeast after midnight.

Aug. 20: Full moon at 5:45 p.m.

Highlight: The Summer Triangle is the dominant constellation above us.

Made up of three bright stars — Altair, Vega, and Deneb — in nearly a righttriangle, this is an easy constellation to spot. Deneb is the tail of Cygnus the Swan, who flies along the Milky Way, while Aquila the Eagle (of which Altair is the eye), flies in a near collision in the opposite direction. Vega is the fifth brightest star in the night sky, and is the star that the brightness of all of stars is compared to. Its constellation, Lyra, is also a bird (a buzzard) making the trio an unusual congruence of avian asterisms.

In

1947 something fell out of the sky and crashed near Roswell, New Mexico. It may’ve been an alien spacecraft, a weather balloon, or nothing at all, but its effect on the community was profound. That alleged UFO crash spawned an urban legend — and an economic boom — for Roswell.

And so, 66 years after the whatever-it-was was hauled off and the alien bodies were put into deep-freeze, I arrived at the 2013 Roswell UFO Festival.

Every Fourth of July weekend, the town holds its annual UFO festival. Main Street is shut down, the portable concert stage is set up, the vendors fill the street. Attendees are treated to costume contests, parades, and all sorts of alien-themed silliness. People come from all over the world to mix with morbidly obese Americans dressed as grey aliens and sweat in the 100-degree heat of the New Mexico Desert. A real heatstroke-hoot. Better drink some more alien juice and stay hydrated.

The

first event I attended was the alien pet costume contest held on the Civic Center lawn.

Everybody loves seeing little dogs parade around in costumes that, while embarrassing to other dogs, make humans laugh. Name a better opportunity to spray paint Fido green and display the poor critter in front of 400 similarly dressed humans.

The most appropriate dog to dress up in a silly costume is, of course, the Chihuahua. And there were plenty of purse dogs on display. While waiting for judging to begin, I met Starlina, a tiny Chihuahua from, of all places, Wilhoit, Ariz. Starlina took an honorable mention in the contest, but she was robbed; she should’ve won best costume. The winner of that title was a cat. A freakin’ cat!

Give me a break. Cats don’t wear costumes nearly as well as dogs. The judges must’ve

been cat people.

Later that day was the alien costume contest for people. Thank goodness this one was held indoors in the air-conditioned Exhibit Hall thereby eliminating the need for ambulances to carry away overheated people wearing too much plastic and aluminum foil. Little kids and large adults paraded around in strap-on antennas and alien-themed costumes all hoping to win a prize for their otherworldy fashions. If an actual gray alien had entered, he’d of probably lost, but a tall dude in a gray alien outfit won this one. Thankfully, Tron Guy didn’t show up.

Next, it was time to hit Main Street.

Casio’s drum machine ran at high speed, and I half expected her to start singing Wall of Voodoo’s 1982 hit, “Mexican Radio.” Unfortunately, she didn’t.

By 9 p.m. it had cooled off to a frigid 98 degrees.

Saturday’s Electric Light Parade was fun, but short.

Whatever you’re picturing, it was exactly like that.

Bully for you

Sometimes

it takes a whole lot of forces to bring something good to fruition. That’s exactly what happened when a group of volunteers, many in the mental health profession, decided to bring the documentary film “Bully”and Kirk Smalley, one of the subjects of the doc, to Prescott.

In 2010, Smalley lost his son Ty to suicide after he was bullied at school. Ty was just 11-years-old.

Since then, Smalley has devoted his life to stopping bullying and youth suicide. He’s told Ty’s story at more than 500 schools and has spoken to more than 100,000 students, teachers, and school administrators. He created an anti-bullying organization called Stand for the Silent the goal of which is “to inspire students to be the change they want in their schools.” He’s vowed to fight bullying every chance he gets.

“I have a pretty big purpose in life right now,” Smalley says. “I’m not going to stop. I’ll fight bullying wherever it’s found. Schools. Workplace. I’m not

going to quit until bullying does.”

Smalley will be in Prescott Thursday and Friday, Aug. 29 and 30, speaking at schools in Chino Valley, Prescott Valley, and Prescott. At 6 p.m. Friday, “Bully” screens at The Elks Theatre and Performing Arts Center. The Elks’ new owners have kindly donated the use of the theater for this important event. Smalley will be on hand to answer questions after the film.

Thoughts on chewing

We humans are enthralled by the eating exploits of other species.

We watch with wonder the bulge of a large fish gliding downstream through a heron’s gullet or the lump of a toad being squeezed through a garter snake’s pencil-thick body. Yet daily, within our very homes, we can observe feats of eating no less wondrous.

Indeed, as I sit at the breakfast table this morning and watch my young niece being fed by her mother, I am amazed that such creatures as children (forgive me, Nicole) continue being born. Not that Nicole’s behavior is any worse than that of any other little girl or boy — and certainly no worse than her mother at that age. Never having had any offspring, I tend to watch this game of life from the position of a detached observer. But the creature before me is far more absorbing than a giant python swallowing a pig or a blue whale swilling krill.

I

realize that it is me I am watching in this real life nature drama.

So, this is what it’s like growing up — taking entire slices of bread that your mother has thoughtfully broken into convenient bite-sized pieces and methodically stuffing them, one by one, into your mouth until it can hold no more. At this point, poor Nicole, you are faced with a dilemma that all of us must eventually face. Not a bit more of that tasty stuff can be crammed into that orifice between your chubby cheeks. You must chew, dear child, and that is a most dreary fact of our existence.

You can always spit it out and start all over again, which is exactly what

you do several times. As I look up from my newspaper and gaze upon the partially masticated, brownish lump on the plate across from me, I wonder how any of us ever learns to chew.

And, more to the point, how any human parent finds the necessary faith in our species to sit patiently by as we learn to do this.

Chewing,

or mastication, is primarily something that mammals do and, more specifically, mammals that eat plants at least part of the time. You don’t see carnivorous mammals like lions or wolves chewing; they much prefer to slash and gulp.

According to some scientists, chewing may have evolved long ago when animals first colonized the land. It has to do with the tongue. Whereas fish tongues mostly just move food from front to back of mouth, mammalian tongues evolved to move food around in the mouth for teeth to chew it. Who knew we would evolve to eat pizza and Twinkies?

Some of the dinosaurs might also have been chewers. The shape of the teeth in certain duck-billed hadrosaurs suggests that they chewed plants. Scientists hypothesize this might’ve given them an evolutionary advantage over the big sauropods, who had to swallow rocks to grind up their food. As time-consuming and d inconvenient as chewing is, I’d takee it over swallowing rocks any day.

Though chewing is mainly an unconscious reflex, there’s much more to it than that. It also involves an intricate set of motor skills that must be learned. Indeed,, we can also think about our chewing, as when my mother used to tell me, and now my wife reminds me to chew, not wolf, my food.

Human babies start learning to chew at around 7- to 9-months. As od with all things, they learn about food u by touching and playing with it. You can imagine how messy a process this can be. ew In some cultures, parents pre-chew

their infant’s food into a wet, pulpy mass called a bolus before giving it to them. This is referred to as premastication, and it’s just as yucky as it sounds.

I

guess the only thing that saves us all from extinction is that most of the world’s mothers- and fathers-to-be are blithely unaware of these gruesome details until it’s too late, when they are up to their necks in the lumpy brownish mess of child raising. But if they were to watch and think about such things as I’ve just witnessed, it’s quite possible they might decide to postpone or even indefinitely delay their plans for a child. We might very well become the first species on the planet doomed to extinction merely by

watching a child chew.

As for my own parents, they had three children. Each of us probably stuffed our faces with entire loaves of bread before learning how to chew.

Diagnosis: Technology With Paolo Chlebecek

have been using their computers for games virtually since computers were invented.

A version of tic-tac-toe was created with an early computer prototype called EDSAC (Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator) back in 1952. Ever since then, people have been inventing new ways to amuse themselves via their old pal, the computer. As with any media, it’s up to you to choose content; there are many choices and alternatives unsuitable for some audiences.

Any discussion of computer games would be negligent if it didn’t include some of the most

popular classic games often bundled for computers — games like FreeCell, Hearts, Minesweeper, Pinball, and Solitaire. There are even traditional games from the old arcades like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Frogger, Asteroids, Tron, Space Invaders, Pong, Breakout, Sudoku, and my favorite, Tetris.

The list goes on but the point is that these enduring games are still available via the Internet, and even in some gaming consoles like Xbox, Nintendo Wii, and others. Many stores still sell card game software bundles and the like. If you’re in the market for these, just make sure the packaging says it’ll work with your operating system and hardware.

If you like flight simulators or FPS (First Person Shooter) games you likely have — or need — an expensive gaming rig that’s able to run circles around most PCs. You may not recognize some of the brands at first — Alienware, one of the high-profile companies, is actually a Dell subsidiary — but these high-end systems are truly state of the art. After you’ve made the initial investment, you can upgrade or add on to most of these systems, which can be costly. Still, it’s usually less expensive than buying a new computer.

But maybe you want to sit back and be entertained. There are plenty of options for that, too.

Most desktops and laptops can play DVDs just as well as any DVD player. Some can even play Blu-Ray discs. In either case, all you need is a good set of surround sound speakers or a nice pair of headphones, and it’s almost like being at the movie theater.

Speaking of theaters, Netflix is an easy, inexpensive way to get a variety of movies and TV shows you’d like. Monthly subscriptions start at $8. There’s a catch, though: You can’t watch every movie instantly on your computer — they want you to upgrade the account and get DVDs by mail. One of my favorites, Amazon Instant Video, provides movies that other services don’t have. If you like free or almost-free entertainment, Hulu is

a good site. They have literally thousands of movies and TV shows streaming for free. The only problem is that you have to watch commercials. And some of the content costs an additional $8 per month.

There are lots of websites that claim to host free movies and games.

Many of them are dangerous or require recurring fees for downloads.

Others lace files with viruses. Generally speaking, if you can get it for free, there’s some sort of a catch — and some are far worse than others.

You’ve also got to be careful with music and movie sharing websites as well. Legality aside, there are many potential dangers lurking on Kazza, Limewire, WinMX, Bearshare, and others. Using these programs almost always guarantees you’ll get a virus or other malware.

That’s yet another reason why it’s important to keep your computer updated and protected with antivirus and anti-malware software.

If you don’t, you’ll have a great time … until you don’t.
