Mortimer Farms is hosting a Beef ’n’ BBQ Fest in honor of Cinco de Mayo 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5. Of particular interest: The ranch-raised black angus beef is straight off the farm. There are also the customary hayrides, carnival games, and horse and ranch displays, plus live entertainment and a barn dance 6-9 p.m. Saturday. Part of the proceeds to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Arizona.

Mountain Artists Guild hosts its 27th annual arts festival Saturday and Sunday, May 11 and 12 on the Courthouse Square, featuring 100 fine arts vendors. Now heralded as the Fine Arts and Wine Festival, the Guild’s event also brings music and wine to the gig resulting in a more festive show to be sure. Not a shopper? Sample wine from seven local vineyards while listening to music in the wine Garden or dig on the tunes wafting over from the gazebo. Oak Creek Winery, Arizona Stronghold Winery, Pillsbury Winery, Granite Creek Winery, Page Springs Winery, Bitter Creek and Jerome Wineries, and Studio Vino Winery will all be present and accounted for. It’s only $12 for six tasting tickets, so it’s a great opportunity to sample local offerings. Adam Smith and Radio Hill will be performing Saturday in the Gazebo along with Saith. Carol Pacey and the Honey Shakers take on the Sunday crowd with their “bees make it, we shake it” attitude. Scott Helmer performs in the wine garden both days.

Prescott Highland Games is calling all clansmen to Watson Lake Park for the ninth year in a row 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, May 11. In addition to Highland athletics, piping and reenactments, this year festivities once again include a dance competition that’s professionally judged according to international standards. I’m not quite sure what that

means, but I’m eager to play spectator to the various jigs after relaxing in the beer and whiskey tent. How many other attractions, local or otherwise, let you lounge in the sun with a glass of whisky? As a side note, the official warm up takes place 5-8 p.m. the night before in the Celtic Crossings courtyard, with the third annual Ian MacNessie Highland Gathering. Promising Celtic entertainment and a “wee taste of the games” is sure to bring on your brogue in ample time for the party the following day.

On Saturday, May 25, Folk Sessions jumpstarts its sixth annual Summer Concert Series at the Highlands Center For Natural History. The event runs 7-10 p.m. Three Legged Dog from the Valley graces the stage first ─ an oldtime string band with a whole lotta heart. Armed with a squeezebox and swagger, D.B. Reilly headlines the first shebang. With a little bit of twang, a hearty shake of Zydeco, and a lot of Americana, he’s been winning the hearts of audiences all over with the likes of “We’re All Going Straight to Hell” — the winner of the 2012 Great American Song Contest.

Reilly’s got a long list of industry cred, and I daresay he’s quite the media darling right now. The producer, Constanza, is holding a rack of clothes, and an actress dressed in a 1940s-era slip and high heels is rummaging through them. warm days, my classroom door is open to the outside. While talking with students or fellow teachers, I inevitably hear the faint but unmistakable sound of the thrust produced by a military-grade jet engine.

I’ll run outside, throw my hand up to block the sun and begin a frantic search for the source of the noise. There are only a few seconds before it’s gone.

I spot military aircraft two or three times out of 10.

They’re usually F-16s and F-15s, or some variant of the two.

I

was 10-years-old the first time I boarded a plane. It was an America West flight from Phoenix to Durango, Colo., on a Boeing 737. I saw the cockpit and got a set of plastic wings. The cockpit array of dials and switches, the G-forces on takeoff, the slow landing approach, and the whine of hydraulics and the sudden reverse thrusters as the plane touched down fired synapses of delight in my brain.

A quarter century later, I’m still enchanted by human defiance of gravity.

I’ve been fortune enough to fly on commercial airline flights from short hops around the U.S. on variations of Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s to 12hour flights half way around the globe on Boeing 747s. A recent visit to Tucson’s Pima Air and Space Museum touched off a desire to further satiate my airplane inquisitiveness.

During the past few months, I’ve discovered a pastime popularly called aircraft spotting.

In aircraft spotting people do just that: spot

airplanes. What they do after that separates the various types of spotters.

Many

people just enjoy watching aircraft and casually identifying some of the aircraft types they see. Other people seek to observe as many different airframes as possible. Some people identify, record, and catalogue aircraft registration numbers. Some elevate aircraft spotting to an art form through photography or other mediums.

Most aircraft spotters are people who simply love airplanes and flight.

One of the most important tasks for an aircraft spotter is finding a suitable place to actually spot aircraft. Airports are the obvious choice. At airports, planes are at their most active. In and around airports, planes perform their most difficult exercises in landing, taking off, and flying at low levels.

All aircraft spotters have the best vantage point at or close to airports whether they are major international airports, small regional fields or military installations.

Another plane spotting method is to listen for an aircraft and then try and spot it. This usually involves aircraft at higher altitudes. With military aircraft, this technique requires eagle eyes and a lot of good fortune unless there’s a condensed water-vapor trail. Those aircraft may be commercial airliners, though.

Commercial airlines are easier to spot than military aircraft at altitude because their bellies are usually painted white or other bright colors.

Military aircraft are more distinct in their designs, however, and once spotted, are easier to identify by their particular airframe. To identify commercial

airframes at altitude it’s helpful to have binoculars or other optics.

Smaller private aircraft can be simpler to identify at altitude because of their lower maximum ceilings.

Because of advancements in digital photography and video cameras, it’s now possible to view thousands of aircraft pictures and stream thousands of hours of aircraft footage on the Internet. Viewing and watching two-dimensional aircraft images on a screen decidedly eliminates the spotting part of aircraft spotting. However, people can still enjoy identifying aircraft online and, more importantly, learn about various types of aircraft. Still, watching aircraft on the Internet eliminates the benefits of the feel and sound of the aircraft as well as the act of getting outside and participating in an activity.

Aircraft

spotting can be an immensely satisfying leisure pursuit that enriches those curious about aircraft and flight.

As I explore this hobby, I find it increasingly satisfying. stage is set.

More particularly, the main stage at Prescott Center for the Arts is set with 1950s-style beds, a table, chairs, gym lockers, and bookcases. To my immediate left sits a vintage TV and, beyond that, a desk with a typewriter.

I also notice a coat rack with several hats and a jacket, a Bakelite radio, a Brownie box camera, a small American flag, trophies, and nautical art.

Anticipation and excitement build inside me as I absorb the set for “A Thousand Clowns.” I remind myself that I’m not here to see this show. I don’t believe me. This set’s details invite the audience to interact.

I look at the desk again and, after noting the nearby oriental rugs, spot a pocket watch and a pair of glasses.

I realize I’m getting lost in the details when I count the clocks. Six. Six clocks.

This is the art of set design.

A door opens. Randy Faulkner steps through, smiles, and offers his hand in greeting. Faulkner’s the artist behind the magic of this set. He’s the man I’m here to see.

“As you can see, I dressed up,” says Faulkner, who’s wearing white painter’s pants and shirt, each splattered with paint stains that match the set’s walls and windows.

Staging productions It took about a week to build the set for “A Thousand Clowns,” Faulkner says.

I look up in awe. It looks like someone sliced though a brownstone apartment and opened it up on its hinges.

I ask if all the doors open. They do.

And behind each one, Faulkner has painstakingly crafted the illusion of other rooms. Behind one door is a kitchen, behind another a hallway, and behind another a bathroom, complete with a shower curtain, bathtub, and yet another gym locker.

Upon closer inspection, the tub and locker are facades, but you can’t tell unless you’re inside them. From the seats, the set looks like a huge building with many rooms, teasing you to crane your neck and see as far as possible. This is quite a feat considering the stage is not only small, but doesn’t have a grand drape to hide behind.

Faulkner says it drives him nuts when he sees a performance and things don’t look like they should.

Even small items like door knobs not lining up on both sides of a door. I concur. A rogue detail can eject you from even the most engaging story.

Setting the stage Faulkner grew up in California and attended high school in Long Beach where he says there were three stages that rival Arizona’s Gammage Auditorium. But he didn’t go to the theater then; he went to the movies.

“Instead of thinking only about the story, I left thinking why did they do it that way?” Faulkner says. “I thought more about the character development and the undertones of the movie.”

Those features form a foundation

for set design — the millions of minuscule details that make the platform for a performance believable.

After graduating school as an art major, Faulkner worked with friends building and painting materials for amusement parks including Disneyland. He also worked with details as a display manager at Sears and, of course, as a crime scene investigator.

Since moving to Arizona in the 1980s, Faulkner has worked on stages at the Elks Opera House, Yavapai College, and Prescott Center for the Arts.

Faulkner says designing sets can be challenging at PCA because the stage is always visible. There are also two large, immovable pillars at the front of the stage. Rather than ignore them, Faulkner incorporates them into sets.

It’s this kind of outside-of-the-box thinking that makes him successful.

“You can’t be afraid to make a mistake,” Faulkner says. “I can make a mistake three times and find a solution before some people even try one thing.”

Oh, and did I mention he’s also directing this play?

Attention to details I ask Faulkner about juggling responsibilities. He says he’s tired, but it’s hard to believe given his enthusiasm.

Faulkner is also responsible for casting, directing, and selecting the music before the show opens to help set the mood for the performance. Not only did he build this set: he painted and furnished it, complete with his own belongings.

“The ‘South Pacific’ record was a

gift to me on my 13th birthday,” says Faulkner, who explains it’s perfect because that’s also the age of the play’s younger protagonist.

The older character has a Peter Pan complex, hence the clocks.

I look at the wall above one of the beds again and realize that what I’d assumed was a built-in bookcase is actually a board with book spines attached. I look at the typewriter again, out of which spills a piece of paper with words typed neatly in lines.

Sets don’t last long, Faulkner says, and sometimes they only survive in memory. He’s tried to watch video recordings of his thirty-plus plays, but the flat images don’t do them justice.

This is opening night for Faulkner and the cast, crew, and set of “A Thousand Clowns,” but, when you read this, the production will be a memory.

As I leave the theater, I ask Faulkner to share some advice.

“Find something you like to do and do it,” he says.

Then he steps up to a set window, pulls up the blinds and throws open the window and lets me lean on the sill.

I look down, fully expecting to see a bustling city.

years ago, I wrote a novel called “Glory Lane” (Ace Books). Three teens — a punk, a nerd, and a Valley Girl — find themselves engaged in an assortment of often outrageous adventures involving multiple species of aliens, alien worlds, and inter-alien conflicts. Eventually they find themselves on an advanced, highly developed planet that features a world-spanning computer network. Supposedly it can answer any question.

The punk isn’t interested and the Valley Girl just wants to go shopping.

The nerd is aghast.

Here they have the opportunity to find the answers to all the great questions that have bedeviled mankind since the dawn of time, and they aren’t interested? So he takes it upon himself to ask the vast system, “What is the meaning of existence?” This query is so profound that even the immense computational power of the alien network requires time to reply. When it finally does, its answer is: Shopping.

“See?” the Valley Girl huffs, not in the least surprised.

I

reference the excerpt from my own book because I have just returned from a week in a land where the alien computer’s response appears to be wholly accurate. Dubai is one of the United Arab Emirates. A week there is sufficient to convince one that the name might accurately be read as “Youbuy.”

I mention this because in the language of contemporary diplomacy, “soft power” has many meanings.

While it is usually used to refer to art, or music (it is often alleged that MTV brought down the Soviet Union, not Ronald Reagan), it can also mean anything that one culture employs, intentionally or indifferently, to infiltrate and influence another. Based on my world travels, of which Dubai is the most recent, I reckon the Chinese haven’t got a chance.

Why? Because American culture, like America itself, is blissfully content to adapt and absorb elements from other cultures. As we are fond of saying: whatever works. Where the French squabble to find French words for popular American English sayings like “le Weekend,” we are quite happy

The meaning of life to be chauffeured to a pied-à-terre in the city.

But back to the Meaning of Life, and what people elsewhere are willing to happily embrace.

Malls

in Dubai are as much tourist attractions as they are for actual shopping. The mall next to my hotel featured “only” 551 shops. The Mall of the Emirates boasts an indoor ski slope. Claiming to be the world’s largest with 1200plus stores and vendors, the Dubai Mall encloses a four-story high artificial waterfall plus a huge aquarium.

(The ice-skating rink seems like an afterthought.)

I won’t try to go through the stores, but just to give an idea of the penetration of American shopping culture into this part of the world, if you want to eat while in the mall (perhaps after picking up a few non-traditional underthings at Victoria’s Secret), here are a few of your options:

not worried about North Korea. Not when an Islamic emirate halfway around the world openly embraces Fatburger. Don’t think these restaurants and shops are just for tourists; they’re always full of Emiratis. On Thursday and Friday nights (their weekend) you can hardly move for all the young people busily sluicing through American-owned or -themed stores. Our food and shopping is changing the world far faster and more effectively than any military intervention ever could.

It’s the real soft power and, for better or worse, it’s inescapable anywhere on the planet.

Fortunately, we here have grown up submerged in interminable advertising and are therefore aware of and immune to the enticing blandishments of our own consumer culture.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go pick up a few things at the store.

It’s

not unusual for artists to have studios near or in their homes. Nor is it unusual for them to eat where they work. Working where they eat … that’s another story.

“I tried working in the garage a couple times,” offers Prescott artist Filmer Kewanyama, but he preferred the dining room table.

Kewanyama’s airy, modern living room is full of art. Paintings are on the walls. A sculpture, too.

Crafts, some intended as gifts, rest on a side table.

The colors are vibrant, the images simple and

powerful.

The real studio action is in the dining room, though.

The table is covered with art supplies. Big plastic tubs of liquid acrylic sit atop a bookshelf within easy reach. There are two easels on display, but they’re just for display.

“I don’t paint like the traditional artist, standing in front of the easel,” Kewanyama says.

He paints the way he was taught at home.

“We cradle our artwork,” Kewanyama explains.

This can be challenging for larger works, but it’s necessary for him to use small, detail brushes.

Sitting on a chair next to him is small TV. Kewan-

yama points to it and laughs.

“I have two televisions. … I usually have this one on when I’m working.”

Not that he watches it. It’s on because he doesn’t like working when it’s too quiet. The sound of the TV becomes white noise while he paints.

Although he’s dabbled in other mediums and materials, Kewanyama almost exclusively uses acrylics.

“It’s what I grew up with,” he shrugs, alluding to his Hopi heritage.

It informs Kewanyama’s artistic style, subject matter, and the way he makes art.

... FROM PAGE 11 An artful, art-full childhood There are a few Hopi images Kewanyama won’t put on canvas for the general public. The Hopi people have a complex religion and worldview, some of which is public and some of which is reserved for members of specific kivas — i.e. sacred underground ceremonial places. Each kiva holds a piece of the knowledge and wisdom passed down through generations that function as archives for their people.

Which images are appropriate to share?

Kewanyama says it’s pretty intuitive.

“That is the only thing I’ve painted that I questioned if it was OK,” he adds

and points at a painting behind his kitchen table workspace.

It’s not the central image that gave him pause; it’s two snakes running along the sides of the painting. Kewanyama showed them to his uncle, who reassured him they were fine.

This artist’s imagery, methodology, and choice of studio space are deeply rooted in his upbringing. Hopi children are involved in making art from an early age. After Hopi children are old enough to attend their first initiation ceremony, the Katsina Ceremony, they learn the meaning of the Katsinas and other Hopi symbol and help their families make ceremonial items. Kewanyama’s childhood was no different.

are of spending time with his father, a noted Hopi artist, sculptor, and silver smith whose work is collected throughout the United States. While his father worked on a sculpture or painting, he’d give Kewanyama an outline of a drawing to color in. As Kewanyama colored, his father told him what the image meant.

As a child, Kewanyama went with his father to sell his dad’s work to a local art store. After his father’s business was finished, the shop owner would turn to Kewanyama and ask to see the young artist’s work. He’d often buy one of the young artist’s drawings for a quarter, which was a lot of money to a little boy at that time, Kewanyama noted.

An artist’s life Although he had an affinity for drawing and painting, Kewanyama didn’t pursue a career as an artist until later in life. He joined the military. After retiring, he moved back to Hopi land and decided to return to his childhood love of painting. Eventually, he relocated to Prescott. Prescott’s proximity to Hopi land is a plus, but Kewanyama has a genuine affection for the town, too.

In some ways, Kewanyama is as much a cultural ambassador as an artist. He’s frequently invited to lecture by Northern Arizona University on his artwork and the Hopi culture. He also volunteers for veteran organizations and is proud of his military career. His paintings have won awards and are collected

Kewanyama’s artistic career has taken off since moving to the area. During a recent show at the Smoki Museum, the artist sold almost all of his work.

Normally that means a dash to finish more paintings as soon as possible, but Kewanyama had other priorities to attend to.

“I’ve got a lot of paintings to do, but my duty as a grandfather comes first,” he says, alluding to crafts he’s making for his grandchildren.

For Kewanyama, family and culture come first.

Highlands Center for Natural History’s Outdoor Outings

When

raindrops fall to the earth, do you know where they go?

Some are absorbed, nourishing the roots of plants or feeding into an aquifer, others evaporate, and still others run off with nutrients and debris as they roll downstream following the path of least resistance.

From the moment one drop of rain makes contact with the earth, it begins a long, important journey. Small streams of water carve shallow rivulets into the arid Southwest soil until they reach larger washes or creeks. These washes accumulate more water and move further downstream into larger bodies of water: puddles, swimming holes, ponds, lakes, or oceans.

That raindrop is traveling through a watershed.

If you live close to downtown Prescott, you live inside the Granite Creek Watershed, which flows diligently toward the Verde River. The Highlands Center for Natural History, however, is just inside the western edge of the Agua Fria Watershed.

Recently

members of a new volunteer Naturalists class and I explored this watershed and visited the Agua Fria River. The headwater is close to Arizona 69, just on the other side of Granite Dells, though you’d be hard pressed to find much water there. The Agua Fria River is dry the majority of the year and, though it’s been known to flood, its flow is usually delegated to

a trickle, even during our wettest season.

We started at Lynx Creek because it flows through the Highlands Center’s 80-acre site. Lynx Creek begins in the town of Walker and flows steadily north until reaching Lynx Lake, which was dammed for gold mining in the late 1800s. Today, the lake releases water steadily enough that the middle section of Lynx Creek has water year round. It’s just enough water to sustain a healthy population of native Canyon Tree Frogs, which many kids enjoy in the summer, including at our summer camps.

Lynx Creek continues flowing north until it reaches Arizona 69 and runs parallel to the highway through most of Prescott Valley. Just before Fain Road, Lynx Creek crosses under the highway and meets up with the Agua Fria River. From there the water flows down to the Salt River to the Gila River and, eventually, to Colorado.

What a journey for one little drop. But to what end?

A

watershed’s health not only affects the health of its water, but also those who live nearby, including the humans and wildlife who depend on it.

And water droplets don’t have an easy gig. They pick up anything that they touch including chemicals and debris. Each raindrop that picks up impurities feeds directly into highly susceptible riparian areas. These areas, which surround washes, streams, and lakes, make up less than 0.5 percent of Arizona and are crucial for the survival of diverse plants and animals. As many as 75 percent of resi-

dent wildlife species depend on riparian areas.

That’s why organizations like Friends of Agua Fria National Monument (AguaFriaFriends.

Org), Prescott Creeks (PrescottCreeks.Org), and the Arizona Riparian Council (AZRiparian.Org) work to raise awareness of the issues facing our local watersheds and riparian areas.

There’s a lot we can do as a community to better care for our land and water. We can start by watching how much water we use and by being careful of what we throw away in our water systems. We can get outdoors and appreciate them in person, too.

When the volunteer naturalists and I visited Agua Fria we were graced with a flowing river. Countless droplets of rain had made it as far as Badger Spring that day. And to celebrate the recent rain shower, swallows swooped above the water, Gila woodpeckers called from their perches, and butterflies drank from blooming wildflowers.

Spring

is a great time to witness the wonder of bird migration in the Prescott area. Longer days act as a signal to wild birds, compelling them to begin their seasonal journey northward.

One of the most beautiful migratory bird species that passes through in April and May is the Lazuli Bunting. Males have stunning blue on their heads, backs, and wings, and have rust-colored chests and white bellies.

Females are drab and difficult to identify because of their plain plumage.

Lazuli Buntings usually fly in small flocks during migration and frequently visit backyards where people feed birds. The best way to attract them is with white-proso millet. Simply broadcast the seed directly on the ground.

May you be so fortunate to enjoy Lazuli Buntings in your yard this spring.

the Central Highlands of Arizona, we’re lucky enough to have not one, but two distinct flowering seasons per year. Fueled by melting snow and percolating winter water, our first great flowering happens this month. The other great flowering is after the monsoon rains of mid-summer, and, interestingly, most of our flowering plant species are unique to one period or the other. This bimodal flowering season is matched by peaks of animal activity, as well.

Insects follow flowering closely and often pollinate flowers or disperse the seeds that result from that pollination. Peak bird, mammal, reptile and amphibian activity follows shortly thereafter because insects constitute much of their diets.

The diversity of species and behaviors is very nearly bewildering. More groups of insects emerge day by day — look for the first damselflies of the season, flying near water like little, graceful dragonflies, blue and iridescent red. New butterflies continue appearing, such as metalmarks, snouts, checkerspots, skippers, and buckeyes. The most conspicuous of all is the glorious Two-tailed Swallowtail Butterfly, the flagship of the season. It’s the Arizona state butterfly as well as one of the largest in the country, with a wingspan of up to 5”.

Look for them as they float elegantly through riparian

galleries across Arizona from now until the fall.

Lizards also become more conspicuous this month as temperatures consistently reach their tolerable range. Ornate Tree Lizards (Urosaurus ornatus) are the most common lizard in the riparian areas and hills nearby, and can often be seen clinging upside-down to tree trunks. Their first young of the season hatch this month. High mountains • Fendler’s Meadow Rue begins flowering.

• Fendler’s Ceanothus flowers.

• Raven young begin hatching, and parents begin around-the-clock nest brooding. During this time, pairs are rarely seen flying, though groups of young Ravens can still be seen together.

Visit: Spruce Mountain Loop, Trail No. 307.

Ponderosa Pine forests • Whitetail Deer finish their spring molt, acquiring their soft, reddish to tan summer coats.

• Porcupines begin giving birth.

These remarkable mammals are rare in the Central Highlands, but can sometimes be found in high Aspen glades.

• Acorn Woodpecker young begin fledging, and can sometimes be seen leaning out of nest holes in Ponderosa Pines. They might do this for weeks before attempting flight.

Visit: Aspen Creek Trail, No. 48.

Pine-Oak woodlands • Oak species continue changing color from red to orange and, eventually, to a soft, light green.

• Strawberry Hedgehog Cactus (Echinocereus triglochidiatus) flowers abundantly. Look for hummingbirds visiting the flowers.

Visit: Trails No. 326 & No. 392, north of Thumb Butte.

Pinyon-Juniper woodlands • Wolfberry (Lycium macrodon) flowers.

• Spiny lizards (Sceloporus spp.), though furtive, can be seen.

Visit: Tin Trough Trail, No. 308.

Grasslands • Globemallow (Sphaeralcea spp.) flowers.

• Pronghorn young are now over 2-months-old, and can routinely be seen running with herds as fast as adults and growing rapidly.

Visit: Mint Wash Trail, No. 345.

Riparian areas • Fremont Cottonwoods release their fibrous, cottony seeds. Cotton can form drifts several inches thick, especially in cottonwood-dense areas such as Granite Dells, Watson and Willow lakes — even Granite Creek in downtown Prescott.

• Young Beavers are born inside lodges or riverside dens.

Visit: Lower Wolf Creek Falls, Trail No. 384.

Deserts/Chaparral • Some yucca species flower.

• Many cactus species flower, including pink and yellow prickly pears, hedgehog cacti, and, at the upper limit of the Sonoran Desert, Saguaros. Look for native solitary cactus bees visiting them.

• Palo Verde trees flower, along with Velvet Mesquite, and various acacias and mimosas.

• Gila Monsters become active, searching for mammal and bird nests in the dry desert uplands.

Mobs, Maypoles, & Multitudes The science of crowds

It’s

getting warmer and the denizens of Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Dewey-Humboldt are migrating outdoors. Tourists, too. They’re collecting and congregating, herding and hording, forming flocks and attending functions.

Given the multiplicity of events, you’re bound to find yourself amongst a throng of thong-clad folks.

As individuals, each is a beautiful, unique human being. En masse, however, they’re mindless sheep.

You’ve got choices: Join the crowd, navigate through it, or, if you’re feeling sprightful, control it.

Whatever your druthers, science has you covered.

The information below draws on scientific studies, data, and the accumulated knowledge of man(and woman (and womon))kind. Some details have been omitted for the sake of clarity and conciseness.

Other details have been omitted for the sake of alliteration and assonance.

Crowds can accomplish a lot. They can spur revolutions and shifts in collective consciousness. They can also form mobs and perpetuate groupthink.

Don’t let your assembly become an army.

You experience the world through sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste. Why not use those five senses to master the masses?

Sound It’s well established in pop culture and bookie circles, but the so-called home field advantage at sporting events and its relation to crowd noise has only recently come under serious scientific scrutiny. Experimental studies of it are often criticized for low external validity, i.e. scant relation to realworld conditions, while observational studies are often criticized for low internal validity, i.e. lack of variable isolation. Then, as described in a September 2012 Front Psychol Ps study, researchers from fro the United Kingdom’s Ne Newman University College Colle and University Col College London studied home team a advantage by u using noiseccanceling h headphones for m muay Thai referees. It makes sense for decision makers to assuage their audiences; to do otherwise might spur an uprising. Just ask Igor Stravinsky, whose ballet “The Rite of Spring” literally caused a riot when it debuted in 1913. What started as laughter and booing devolved into arguments, fistfights, and police ejection of dozens of people. Nearly three decades later, the dissonant tones and maddening rhythms that so enlivened the crowd were tame enough for inclusion in Walt Disney’s animated film “Fantasia.” This begs the question: Is that where the writers of “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” got the idea for Wyld Stallyns?

Engaging a crowd requires plenty of volume and, as any concert- or rally-goer can attest, leads to a noise hangover. Be thankful for that ringing in your ears — it’s your body’s way of saving your hearing. When decibels rise, your cochleae release a hormone that temporarily dampens hearing and protects against acute, permanent noise-induced hearing loss. The results of landmark study that discovered were announced

by Australia’s University of South Wales in April 2013, and are published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

With the exception of the late John Ritter, everyone knows three’s a crowd. Keeping tabs on larger groups can be quite difficult, though. Stop head counting; you can estimate crowd size using a method devised by Berkeley journalism professor Herbert Jacobs. First, take a picture for reference. Next, divide the area into a grid of known measurements like, say, 100 square feet.

Now get a calculator. In loosely packed areas, where people stand arm’s-length apart, there’ll be one person per 10 square feet. In tighter areas, it’s one person per 5 square feet. Are people packed like pilchards? Then it’s one person per 2.5 square feet — or four people per 10 square feet. One caveat: Jacobs developed these figures in the 1960s, decades before the Great American Belt Expansion.

Ever notice how erratically people move in crowds, even when everyone’s headed the same way or oriented toward the same object of attention?

Once you get people too close together, globally ordered motion breaks down, particularly at a crowd’s peripheries. Physicists from Ireland’s University College Dublin describe this effect as observed in computer simulations in an article in the March 2013 issue of The European Journal B.

Smell If you’re attending an assembly abroad that might get broken up by the police or military, bring a nose plug. With the aid of Pennsylvania’s Monell Chemical Senses Center, the U.S. Department of Defense has been working on a tactical stink bomb for more than a decade. Its synthetic smells are based on human biology — vomit, waste, body odor, burnt hair — plus rotting garbage. This scent-based weapon could theoretically violate the international Chemical Weapons Convention, which already bans tear gas in war.

The Defense Department has suggested they’re A-OK, though, as long as they don’t affect the trigeminal nerve,

which is involved in facial sensations and biting and chewing.

Think you’re safe from weaponized malodorants at home?

Not if the U.S. borrows a maneuver from the Israeli Defense Forces. In September 2008, they used water cannons to deploy Skunk, a scent-based weapon, to control an unruly crowd. The smell, while clearly non-lethal, can cause nausea and vomiting. While the official word on Skunk is that it’s washable, naysayers have reported that the smell can linger on clothes and lawns from months to years and has been used punitively by officials to dissuade regular peaceful protests.

Touch If you’re trying to navigate through a crowd in motion, you don’t want to bump into anyone — apologies and even eye contact can slow you down, let alone distract you long enough for a pickpocket to lift your valuables. If you’re walking with a thin crowd, stick to the edges; if you’re walking against a thick crowd, work diagonals. This rationale stems from an April 2010 study in PLoS ONE headed by scientists from Berlin’s Max Planck Institute. They found that 70 percent of people in crowds move in smaller groups like friends, couples, and families. In loosely packed areas, these groups tend to walk in a line, while, in denser arrangements, they from a V-like formation that enables socialization but hinders movement.

But maybe you want to bump into people. Maybe you’re in a mosh pit. In that case, study up on physics to maximize your impact. When left to their own devices, mosh pitters collide in random patterns that resemble an ideal gas, while those in a circle pit form a vortex. The Cornell University scientists who analyzed mosh pit vidoes presented these findings during the American Physical Society’s March 2013 meeting. Here’s the first, urbane sentence of their abstrast: “Heavy metal concerts present an extreme environment in which large crowds (~10^2-10^5) of humans experience very loud music (~130dB) in sync with bright, flashing lights, often while intoxicated.”

Sharing food with others has led to, exacerbated, or at least contributed to numerous diseases, epidemics and, probably, the Salem witch trials.

Despite the risks, however, there’s one convincing reason to break bread with the total strangers in your immediate vicinity: You may get lucky — maybe right then and there, or maybe years down the line. Male chimps famously use meat to woo female chimps in heat. Scientists were confused as to why some male chimps gave food to nonreceptive females, too, until scientists at Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Evolution Anthropology shed light on the issue in a study in the April 2009 issue of

PLoS ONE. Generous male chimps were twice as likely to make it with previously nonreceptive females than their stingy counterparts during a threeyear period. Meat-for-sex trades in the primate world vary according to species’ social hierarchies, among other factors, but chimpanzees are one of our closest living relatives. It turns out there may be no such thing as a free lunch, after all.

Astronomy 101: Get an eyeful

When

I first started taking astronomy seriously, all I had was a pair of binoculars, an iPhone astronomy app, and a longtime love of stargazing.

That kept me busy for a while, but eventually I wanted to see stellar objects in greater detail.

I began looking at telescopes and researching them online. A month later, I was still confused about what would be best for me. There are different types, sizes and technologies.

Newtonians, Dobsonians, SchmidtCassergrains, refractors, reflectors, GPS, GOTO — those are just a few of the terms you’re likely to encounter.

For the new, aspiring astronomer, there are three models of telescopes to consider.

When

most people hear the word telescope, they probably picture a refractor. They’re larger at one end and taper down to the eyepiece at the other end. If you get one of these you’re in good company: Galileo Galilei made his observations with a refractor telescope. It’s called a refractor because the light passing through the lenses is refracted or “bent.”

You can find refractor telescopes in hobby stores and at many big box chains. Be careful if the box says something like “540X magnification.”

That level of magnification is practically useless with cheap telescopes on cheap mounts. Instead, look at the aperture size. The larger the aperture, the better the telescope’s light-gathering ability. When you’re trying to

observe distant or faint objects, you’re going to need it.

Refractor telescopes are best suited for observing the moon, planetary objects, and binary stars. One drawback to these kinds of telescopes is that they cost more per inch of aperture than any other type of telescope. Still their advantages — ease of use and simple, rugged design — may outweigh their pitfalls.

Another

option is a reflector telescope. It’s usually a long cylinder.

Sometimes it’s a really long cylinder — say, 6 feet long. These telescopes are nicknamed light buckets because of their large diameters. It’s not unusual to see 12- or even 16-inch wide reflectors at star parties. The eyepiece at the top end of this telescope protrudes from the side. Instead of refracting light, it reflects light off of a large parabolic mirror onto a smaller, flat mirror into the eyepiece.

John Dobson popularized reflector telescopes among amateur astronomers in the 1960s by constructing them out of low-cost materials. An entire line of modern reflector telescopes has been dubbed Dobsonians in his honor. The Dobsonian mount system is as simple as it gets, but you’ve got to have some basic knowledge of the night sky to put it to use.

The big draw of a reflector telescopes is their large mirror or aperture sizes and their relatively low cost.

For a relatively small investment, you get a better view of distant and faint celestial objects. One distinct disadvantage of a reflector is that its primary mirror is open to the air and susceptible to dust, among other things, and thus require more care and maintenance.

A

third option is the Catadioptric telescope, aka the Schmidt-Cassegrain or MaksutovCassegrain. These telescopes are essentially refractor-reflector hybrids.

These are the most popular telescopes sold today. Their versatility for viewing close, bright objects and distant, faint objects accounts for that popularity. They’re also popular among astrophotographers. One disadvantage to Catadioptrics is they’re susceptible to dew.

Although

those are the three most common types of telescopes, there are other bells and whistles to consider. The latest telescope technology is GOTO and GPS. GOTO refers to onboard databases of celestial objects and tracking.

Once you give the onboard computer your coordinates and align it via bright skyward objects, you can tell the telescope what you want to view and it’ll find and track it for you.

This might sound like cheating, but there’s nothing more frustrating than not being able to find something in the night sky you want to view and not being able to find it.

GPS technology has the same tracking ability as GOTO, but it doesn’t need your coordinates.

Needless to say, there’s a lot more to telescope technology than this.

There

are almost as many different kinds of garden designs as there are gardeners. A garden can be as formal as the place setting at a royal wedding or as informal as a weekend scratch patch.

It can range from urban chic (in which plants are almost incidental) to rustic or au naturelle. The whole garden can be an art form in which each plant, rock, or sand particle is a painfully chosen part of the abstract whole. It can be desert, tropical, English, Mediterranean, oriental, or Disney. Or the theme might be literary, such as all the plants mentioned by Shakespeare or the Bible. It can be a rock, sand, or water garden. Or even a tactile, scented, or stir-fry garden.

Frankly, I am bored with these designs. They’ve been done to death.

And I can do without terms such as harmony, simplicity, repetition, unity of design, and all the other ho-hum elements that well-designed gardens are supposed to have. Why can’t my garden be disharmonious, complex, just full of singularities, and have not the faintest trace of unity?

We need to overthrow the smug know-it-alls who dare to decree what principles of design we must follow.

Arise, ye poor browbeaten gardeners.

Create gardens of anarchy, I say!

What we need are wholly new designs.

For

instance, I’d like to create a garden in which no single plant has anything at all to do with any other. It would defy anyone to see a theme, pattern or relationship. The first hint of such a thing would cause me to yank out the offending plant.

The plants would be from all corners of the world and have absolutely nothing in common. There would be a boojum tree right next to a pink petunia and a monkey flower. Next to these, I’d plant a cabbage. And if someone asked why I chose this particular juxtaposition, I’d reply, “No reason. No reason at all.”

How about a garden completely

Weird gardens devoted to weeds? Pick all the nastiest, ugliest, toughest and most despicable weeds you’ve ever heard of. Toss a bunch of seeds over the ground. No need to water or cultivate. Just give them plenty of room, step back, and watch them fight it out. I can just see an army of Russian thistle advancing forward to dominate the landscape met by hordes of ragweed, nut sedge, and bur clover.. Who will win? And whatt kinds of patterns mightt develop in the process?

Can you imagine the interesting combinations of shapes, colors, and textures res that might evolve? olve?

And the best part of all is you never ver have to weed it. t.

For those with th truly weird tastes, why nott plant a garden

devoted to odd shapes? A garden of grotesquerie. Think of plants so monstrous, so fantastic and bizarre, that they’d stand out from any other. Imagine a whole garden full of such freaks.

There’d be crested forms of cacti, of course, and mutant examples from every major plant group. From the deserts of southwest Africa, there’d be a Welwitschia plant with long, splitting, strap-like ti leaves that wrap themselves around the landscape.

There’d be ferociously thorny, succulent Euphorsu bias from Africa, Madagascar palms, Madag creeping devil cacti creepin from Baja, and plenty of wh white baneberry (or doll’s do eyes) flowers, whos whose white fruits with black spots loo look like hundreds of angry pupils staring back at st

you.

Or how about a garden entirely devoted to dead plants? Included here would be species that die right after blooming, such as most agaves. Just imagine what you could do with their bold, withered stems and flower stalks in every size and shape. A nice big saguaro skeleton, ribs split wide open, would add a nice accent. You could also include, of course, the thousands of plants that you have personally killed over the years. Rather than chipping them up or throwing them on the compost pile, why not utilize all those dead annuals, shrubs, and trees in morbid arrangements of gray and brown? They’d remind us daily of the grim mortality that lurks behind each one of our garden success stories.

Or you could opt for a variation on the scented garden, one in which each plant is chosen for its foul-smelling qualities. There’d be trilliums, stapelias, skunk cabbages, carrion-flowers, and lots of flies to boot. And, yes, there’d be rows of the giant titan arum (also known as corpse flower), whose flower shape so titillated the Victorians in their steamy hothouses.

But

the weirdest garden of all would be one without any plants at all. There’d be nothing, in fact. No soil to till, no sand to rake, and no rocks to move around.

No distracting gazebos, statues, or water features. It’d be a bold statement in minimalism and the ultimate meditation garden, with only the bare horizon to contemplate.

How

does the Internet really work? And after you click “send” in your email, what really happens? Where does it go and how does it all get there?

Email and the Internet can be complicated, but they don’t have to be a mystery.

To

briefly summarize its beginnings, the Internet is a connection of multiple computers linked to each other — a global communication system. The World Wide Web isn’t the same thing as the Internet, though, even though the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.

The World Wide Web is one of the services that runs on the Internet and is used to deliver information.

It just happens to be one of the most ubiquitous.

By default, most computers have built-in hardware and software that’s automatically configured to talk to other computers. But back when it all started in the early 1950s, nothing was automatic. Computer-to-computer communication was a fledgling idea developed by several private and U. S. government entities, including J.C.R. Licklider. In the mid 1980s many government branches started communicating via the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, aka ARPANET, which was the world’s first international network.

Later this developed into a global

If you’ve got a computer handy, go to Youtube and search for the video “Warriors of the Internet.” This 12-minute video provides a fantastic visualization of the many steps that your computer and data go through to reach their final destinations.

One of the amazing things about the Internet and the way it communicates is that it’s been standardized so almost any Internet-connected device from anywhere in the world can effectively communicate. As “Warriors of the Internet” implies, getting data to where it needs to go can be tricky. But because of the way the Internet is set up, redundancy and all, data usually gets where it’s going.

Ready

for some really geeky stuff? Data uses a globally standard set of protocols, i.e. means of communication, called the he Seven Layer Open Systems Intercononnection model, or OSI for short. This his system breaks up information into o tiny bits so it can travel as quicklyy and efficiently as possible. All digital data — from a one sentence email to thee file used to print this page — can ultimatemately be translated to binary, which iss a series of ones and zeros.

After data is properly configured d via software and ready to be sent out of the computer, it utilizes specific hardware designed to understand the destination of the data but nott the data itself. Then it uses the public blic

“highways” of the Internet to travel to its destination. Once there, the data is reassembled for use.

Here’s

an easy way to visualize it: A guy gets up off of a couch, walks down the steps, out the door, gets in a car, and drives down the highway. He takes an exit, navigates more streets, finds another house, walks up the steps, and plants himself on another couch.

That’s pretty much it, except that it’s all done very, very, very quickly.

Isn’t it nice we don’t have to physically do that every time we send and receive email?

The Art & Science of Classic Cuisine

As a child,

I spent the majority of my free time in the kitchen. My friends rode dirt bikes and played Atari. I couldn’t be bothered with that. I was far too busy creating what I considered culinary masterpieces, along with more than a few complete disasters.

Aside from a natural gift and undaunted passion, my life-long love affair with the art of food was fostered at a very young age by the women on my father’s side of the family. “The Italians.” My Great Grandparents arrived at Ellis Island in 1900 from Italy, bringing beautiful traditions and an Old World respect for food with them. That respect was passed through the generations by instruction and through genetics. Throughout our history, many members of my family have been proprietors of restaurants and bakeries. My story was no different. At the age of 15, after finding my talent and my way in the kitchen, I began a rewarding career managing and opening restaurants and developing innovative menus.

Twenty-three years later, I’m as much in love with the art of food as I was the very first time my beloved Aunt Lena showed me how to make sauce. So, I felt it quite appropriate to kick-off this monthly column by exploring the art and science behind a dish that is true to my roots and dear to my heart.

B Bolognese (Bo-Lo-Naise), better known in America as “meat sauce,” has suffered an injustice since immigrating to the United States. After his studies in Bologna, Artusi spent time in many different regions throughout Italy and adapted cooking styles from each.

Bolognese (Italian Meat Sauce) Artusi was known as a lover of progress, worshipped the scientific method, and was a great admirer of the physiologist Paolo Mantegazza. His greatest passion, perhaps, was applying his love for the scientific method to the art of cooking.

He wrote of this culmination of art and science in many of his books, but none displayed his theories as greatly as his most famous work, “La Scienza in cucina e l'Arte di mangiare bene” (The Science of Cooking and the Art of Eating Well). This book was a scientifically tested cooking manual.

Every recipe was the result of trials and experiments. Artusi’s cookbook was the first to include recipes from all the different regions of Italy, and he’s credited with establishing a truly national Italian cuisine for the first time.

The book is a perennial best seller in Italy to this day.
