Our diverse expertise allows us to enhance our clients’ projects in all avenues of architecture. Fifth Dimension is taking the practice of architect to a new dimension. While building information modeling (BIM) brought the fourth dimension to the industry, 5D has gone beyond architecture and enhanced the work-flow and relationships between our clients, contractors, engineers, and consultants by working together to embrace the future of design and technology.

Project Management & Design from SD through CA with phased occupancies (Integrated Services) Scope & Budget: Three separate office/warehouse buildings were combined into a campus totaling 150,000 SF. Description: The project’s design emphasized open industrial warehouse aesthetic featuring interior clusters of rooms uniting into bold large-scale forms. The project featured progressive design features of custom steel and glass pivot doors and opeings, interior meeting canopy structures, progressive lighting throughout and an exterior tensile structure connecting individual buildings. Delivery: The fast-track project was delivered by design-build processes.
Georgia Power Health & Fitness Center | Atlanta, GA
Project Manager / Architect & Designer; Programming thru CA (Integrated Services): Scope: 15,000 SF renovations and repurposing of interior program spaces and redesign of exterior areas. Description: Lead the programming, design and delivery of a complete reuse of the existing facility from office space to fitness center.
The Southern Progress Corporation – Birmingham, AL
Scope: Services included Programming, Architectural and Interiors for the third phase building of 150,000 SF and re-configuration of existing facilities of 400,000 SF. Description: Award-winning corporate campus located in Birmingham, Alabama. Master planning and design adding to an existing award-winning campus. The third phase of the headquarter campus continues the tradition of the existing designs but explores the heavily wooded site through a different organizational concept that incorporates a multi-story atrium connecting to the first phase. The three building master plan provides a unique experience without compromise of the natural experience of the site or overpowering the existing buildings. Delivery: Architect provided full service design and management. General Contractor delivered project with a negotiated contract.

Dan founded Fifth Dimension Architecture & Interiors in 2013 with the goal of transforming client service and production workflow through innovative technology utilization. His expertise in construction means and methods, BIM technology and advanced computer visualization, along with his determined work ethic, makes him a valuable asset to any architectural project. His creativity and ability to think outside the box, along with his persistent attention to his client’s best interests, has left Dan with a solid reputation as an extremely trusted and capable architect. Since Fifth Dimension’s inception, Dan has led his team to become a prominent developer driven architecture firm with offices in Atlanta, Austin, Birmingham and Orlando. He has worked on projects throughout 12 different states and completed drawings on over 5,000 multi-family units. Along with his mid-rise multi-family portfolio, Dan has headed up the design of high rise hotels, condominiums, retail developments, restaurants, office and custom homes. Dave brings over 26 years of experience and expertise to Fifth Dimension Architecture & Interiors. With that experience, he also brings the knowledge and leadership that allows him to serve as the Director of Firm Operations and Sr. Project Manager for the firm. Dave’s career has allowed him to have experience in a diverse number of project types such as higher education, K-12 education, religious, commercial, hospitality, industrial, adaptive reuse, historic restoration, multi-family, healthcare, and single-family design and construction. Additionally, Dave has had the unique opportunity to work on the other “two legs” of the “ThreeLegged Stool” analogy in the design and construction industry. Dave worked for a period of time for a large commercial construction company as their VDC/BIM Director, and before joining Fifth Dimension worked for Children’s of Alabama, the third-largest pediatric hospital in the United States as their Program/Facility Design Manager. While at Children’s, he developed a comprehensive design and construction workflow process that utilized BIM technology that allowed for streamlined project design delivery and coordination. Autodesk and other industry professionals recognized this process, which allowed Dave to be recognized as an industry leader. It is this comprehensive experience that has allowed Dave to better represent our clients and our firm, knowing how all parties in a project will interact with each other. He has the unique ability to ensure that projects are provided with the most efficient and well-coordinated deliverables for design and construction.

The Kelly Hotel is a renovation of one of iconic historic skyscrapers of the Birmingham skyline is being transformed from a former office building into a boutique Hilton Tapestry flag hotel. The building is steeped in history as being the former home of both the Birmingham Ledger newspaper, and the former corporate headquarters of Protective Life Insurance Company. The project is part of the National Historic Register, and this project has been awarded both federal and state tax credits for the proposed renovation project. Areas within the interior that have significant historic character will remain and be a part of the guest experience with the proposed new hotel.

Macaroni Lofts is a mixed-use development that is in development in the heart of the Parkside District of Downtown Birmingham. The project scope is to take the former Birmingham Macaroni Company factory building which is a three-story wood frame and brick veneer building and convert it into 35 unit residential condos on the upper floors, with retail and parking on the main level. The original three-story factory building was laser scanned and an As-Built BIM model was produced to start the project design. The use of laser scanning, drone video, and 360 degree photography was utilized to develop the model. The newly proposed design has been completely modeled in Revit for all disciplines, which has allowed the project design to be fully coordinated utilizing BIM.
The Battery Phase 2 is a mixed-use development located in the Birmingham’s historic auto district which is quickly being converted from abandoned buildings into new urban environments for retail, entertainment, and residential.

The early 1900’s buildings had no documentation for our design team to start with. Therefore, we compiled a complete laser scan to create not only the project As-Built Building model, but also a surrounding site models for adjacent buildings used for site coordination. The use of laser scanning, drone video, and 360 degree photography was utilized to develop our model. The proposed new project design has been completely modeled in Revit for all disciplines, which has allowed the project design to be fully coordinated utilizing BIM.

Etched in history and brimming with character, the iconic Merchant’s Plaza building formerly known as Merchant’s National Bank is being renovated as a premier multi-family and mixed-use development in the heart of Mobile Alabama’s thriving downtown. Fifth Dimension was selected by Heritage Land Development to design the project’s Master Plan and Phase II Development. The Phase II Development includes designing retail, banking, restaurant, office space, and multi-family residential. Fifth Dimension has been instrumental in the coordination with the state and national historic tax credits associated with this project.

Fifth Dimension Architecture and Interiors endeavored to achieve two primary goals with the design of its new Birmingham Office: maximize office flexibility and collaboration, and optimize natural lighting with space. To this end, every aspect of the project was custom designed, including workstations with integral storage, custom-built steel and glass walls, millwork, and a live edge slab conference table. Fifth Dimension collaborated with local craftsmen and oversaw the fabrication process to ensure a clean, coherent aesthetic without overcomplicating the design. The open the office workstation design permits the team to easily switch workstations according to current project needs.

This phase adapted the original unit layouts into a modern farmhouse aesthetic with high pitched roofs, board and batten siding, and clean, bold lines. Skyfield Retreat is a modern hunting lodge located on a secluded lakeside in Bankston, Alabama. The client’s interest in modern design allowed for this space to be comprised of simple volumes that interact with each other through horizontal planes. The public spaces welcome twelve-foot ceilings with transom windows placed above the exterior overhangs. The southern-facing bedrooms have ninefoot ceilings with floor to ceiling glass opening to their own private porch. The roof plane floats over the structure with deep overhangs and large horizontal bands of glass, drawing the eye to the vast, uninhabited landscape. A theme of passing from inside to out is consistently seen throughout this house. From the wood soffit ceilings, to the concrete flooring, to the cladding on the fireplace; both materials and their linear volumes subtly move from interior to exterior, creating a since of truly being within nature.
