2022 WINTER SEASON 646-892-7999 / 59E59.ORG

59E59 THEATERS WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE ELYSABETH KLEINHANS THEATRICAL FOUNDATION IN 2004 TO GRANT PROFESSIONAL SPACE AND EXPERTISE TO NON-PROFIT THEATER COMPANIES PREMIERING THEIR WORK IN NEW YORK CITY.

UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF VAL DAY, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, AND BRIAN BEIRNE, MANAGING DIRECTOR, 59E59 THEATERS PRESENTS A YEAR-ROUND CURATED PROGRAM OF OFF BROADWAY PLAYS AND MUSICALS THAT ARE NURTURED AND SUPPORTED THROUGH HIGHLY-SUBSIDIZED RENTAL RATES AS WELL AS PRODUCTION, TICKETING, FRONT OF HOUSE, MARKETING, AND PRESS SUPPORT.

WELCOME BACK!

We are excited to return to in-person programming this year with a six-show Winter Season and the launch of the VOLT Festival featuring a triptych of New York premieres by Karen Hartman.

During the pandemic, we remained extremely productive, offering 20 streaming events that received more than 50,000 views from across 44 states and 17 countries, including Chicken & Biscuits, which went to Broadway! We also reimagined what our foundation could offer to theater companies and devised a Covid Relief Grant program awarding $25,000 each to five deserving companies. One grantee, Noor Theatre, will be sharing their work with audiences for the first time, producing First Down by SEVAN as part of a new, highly-subsidized Makers Series Program in February.

2022 will mark Primary Stages’ physical return to 59E59 Theaters as our Resident Theater Company with the world premiere of New Golden Age by Karen Hartman. This work joins Hartman’s The Lucky Star and Goldie, Max & Milk running this Spring as part of the inaugural VOLT Festival. We are also honored to announce that the esteemed LAByrinth Theater Company will make 59E59 Theaters its new artistic home beginning with a developmental production of Victor Almanzar’s new solo show, Through The Fire, in January.

We were also able to keep previous commitments with companies whose projects were originally slated for 2020 including The Civilians, whose musical, Whisper House, was shuttered the day before its first performance, and Happenstance’s physical comedy, Barococo. Geva Theatre Center’s Heartland and Two Headed Rep’s double bill, The Collision and The Martyrdom, complete the season!

In compliance with state and CDC guidelines, 59E59 Theaters has implemented a Covid Safety Policy, available on our website, and has made physical modifications to our spaces to make your visit more comfortable. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with this prior to your visit.

We look forward to welcoming you to the theater soon!

THE CIVILIANS PRESENTS

WHISPER HOUSE

A dark and thrilling musical ghost story.

In an eerie lighthouse on the remote coast of Maine, two lonely people face the beginning of World War II. There’s Yasuhiro—a Japanese immigrant threatened by the rising wartime xenophobia—and Lily, his employer, who’s spent her whole life here. Their world is turned upside down when Lily’s young nephew, Christopher, is sent to live with them. Soon, the boy begins to hear strange music seeping through the walls. Is his imagination getting the better of him? Or are there ghosts here and maybe dangerous ones at that? What happens next will change the lives of these three characters forever...

Written by Grammy and Tony winner Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening, American Psycho) and Tony-nominated and Obie winner Kyle Jarrow (Spongebob Squarepants, The Broadway Musical; The Wildness) and directed by Steve Cosson, Whisper House combines a lush original score with a haunting story about fear of the other and the ways we can transcend it.

Victor Almanzar’s autobiographical solo show begins with a near-death experience that lands him in a Queens, NY hospital during the peak of Covid.

His life flashes before his eyes: his childhood in the Dominican Republic, his move as a youngster to NYC, gang life, drug life, identity struggles, love, and joining the Marines. A story of survival and self-forgiveness driven by Victor’s live, original Hip-Hop music.

TWO HEADED REP PRESENTS

TWO PLAYS CREATED IN RESPONSE TO HROTSVITHA OF GANDERSHEIM’S DULCITIUS

THE COLLISION

AND WHAT CAME AFTER, OR, GUNCH!

AND

THE MARTYRDOM

OF THE HOLY VIRGINS AGAPE, CHIONIA, AND IRENA, BY HROTSVITHA

THE NUN OF GANDERSHEIM, AS TOLD THROUGHOUT THE LAST MILLENNIUM BY THE MEN, WOMEN, SCHOLARS, MONASTICS, PUPPETS, AND THEATER COMPANIES (LIKE THIS ONE) WHO LOVED HER. OR: DULCITIUS

In The Collision, Sisters Anise, Gudrun, and Gunch spend their days praying, washing clothes, and copying the Bible. When a mysterious object falls from the sky—bringing death, destruction, and...unsettling changes in one of the sisters—they are forced to question: Was this God’s work? Or the Devil’s? And what happens when you can’t tell the difference between a pervert and a prophet?

The Martyrdom asks: How do you solve a problem like Hrotsvitha? More specifically, how do we solve her 10th-century comedy about three Christian virgins who triumph over the Devil by accepting their violent, corporeal deaths as a shortcut to eternal happiness with their Celestial Bridegroom? This raucous adaptation is a road trip through the last millennium with the people (and puppets) who have asked themselves this same question in hopes that someone else might have the answer.

Together, these plays explore how we make meaning from the stories we inherit and how to make new meanings when old stories fail us.

BAROCOCO

Barococo dives into the late Baroque and flaunts 18th-century finery, wigs, panniers, gestural styling, elaborate ornamentation, and the excesses of Rococo in this unique physical comedy.

A charming and charismatic six-person ensemble exposes an indulgent aristocratic lifestyle precariously perched on the edge of its extinction. Happenstance Theater invites you to experience the charade—from parlor games to pantomime, from the exquisite to the revolting—in this delightful comedy of manners.

VOLT is an unprecedented festival of three New York City premieres authored by one underrepresented writer. For the inaugural festival, we selected playwright Karen Hartman. Her critically acclaimed works have been produced by theaters around the country, and we are thrilled to share these stories in New York City for the first time.

We have invited three different non-profit theater companies to produce them, and they will be presented simultaneously across 59E59 Theaters’ three spaces in April and May.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

Karen Hartman is a recent Guggenheim Fellow whose plays have been celebrated as passionate, relevant storytelling that “resonate in the current moment with overpowering force” (Variety). She wrote the book for a new musical Rattlesnake Kate, score by Neyla Pekarek, premiering February 2022 at the Denver Center. Three critically acclaimed recent works—Roz and Ray (Edgerton New Play Prize), The Lucky Star (under the title The Book of Joseph), and Project Dawn (NEA Art Works Grant, NNPN Rolling World Premiere)—had ten productions around the country and are published by Samuel French/Concord.

She is developing Project Dawn for Population Media Center as a television series, and has another project in the works with 20th Television. Hartman’s Good Faith: Four Chats about Race and the New Haven Fire Department premiered at Yale Repertory Theater in 2019. Her prose has appeared in the New York Times and the Washington Post. A New Dramatists alumna and former Playwrights Center McKnight Fellow, Princeton Hodder Fellow, and Fulbright Scholar, Hartman served as Senior Artist-in-Residence at University of Washington School of Drama for five years and lives in Brooklyn with her family.
