$10 MILLION GIFT AT 59E59 THEATERS MEANS RENT-FREE RUNS FOR PRODUCING COMPANIES Effective this summer, the 30-plus productions that open annually at 59E59 Theaters will be able to use the company’s three performance spaces and equipment without incurring the weekly cost of rent. “By eliminating rental fees for producing plays at our venue, the Foundation has shattered one of the many financial barriers to emerging companies presenting new works, opening our doors to diverse voices and innovative productions that might otherwise not be seen” said Managing Director Brian Beirne. In celebration of 20 years presenting new work on the Upper East Side of the New York City, and in recognition of increased industry-wide economic challenges faced by theater makers, this new model will help sustain the cultural impacts of the daring and adventurous theatre companies who call 59E59 Theaters home. HELLO SUMMER! I am writing this note halfway through one of our most thrilling Brits Off Broadway seasons. These shows are the first to benefit from The Elysabeth Kleinhans Theatrical Foundation’s incredible 10 million dollar donation, eliminating rental fees for over 25 companies presenting shows here, each year. My philosophy when putting a new season together is to select companies with exciting missions who are passionate about their work. While all of the plays in a season may not seem connected on the surface, I often find that a captivating theme emerges. This summer season features characters facing immense divides, relentlessly pursuing their desires. Compelling conflicts are the heart of great storytelling. We’re drawn into the characters’ struggles, cheering them on or holding our breath. This season will also feature the return of our AMPLIFY Festival (formerly known as VOLT). AMPLIFY: A Playwright’s Voice will celebrate the work of Chisa Hutchinson, a playwright we deeply admire. Her penchant for intricate conflicts and unexpected laughs is irresistible.

Most know of the Julius and Ethel Rosenberg case, but few know the story of their youngest child, Robert, orphaned at six following his parents’ execution for espionage. The boy was adopted by Abel Meeropol who wrote the song “Strange Fruit” seared into America’s consciousness by Billie Holiday. Written and performed by award-winning actor/ playwright John Jiler, The Rosenberg/Strange Fruit Project plumbs America’s character and history, both sweet and sour, through the telling of that remarkable story. Accompanied by clarinetist Sweet Lee Odom, Jiler weaves together strands of American history, political movements, Klezmer, and jazz.

CHISA HUTCHINSON Chisa Hutchinson’s work has been produced in NYC, regionally, and internationally at Atlantic Theater Company, Contemporary American Theater Festival, National Black Theatre, Second Stage Theater, Arch 468 in London and more. Some of her notable plays include: She Like Girls, Somebody’s Daughter, Surely Goodness & Mercy, Whitelisted, and Dead & Breathing. Her radio drama, Proof of Love, can be found on Audible. She’s been a New Dramatist, Dramatists Guild, Lark, and Humanitas Fellow, a Neo-Futurist, and a staff writer for the Blue Man Group. Chisa has won a GLAAD Award, a Lilly Award, a New York Innovative Theatre Award, a Helen Merrill Award, and the Lanford Wilson Award. She was a staff writer on Three Women (Starz) and Tell Me Lies (Hulu).
