Nicholas Herman was a cook in a monastery. He worried about whether or not he was truly saved. One day while looking at a tree, he realized the truth of the Psalmist’s words—that it had to be rooted in something other and deeper than itself (see Psalm 1:1-3).
That day, he decided to make his life an experiment in what he called a “habitual, silent, secret conversation of the soul with God.”
He’s known today by the new name given to him by his friends: Brother Lawrence. He remained obscure throughout his life and spent the rest of his days in the monastery kitchen. But the people around him found that rivers of living water flowed out of him that made them want to know God the way he did.
“The good brother found God everywhere,” one of them wrote, “as much while he was repairing shoes as while he was praying with the community.” After Brother Lawrence died, his friends put together a book of his letters and conversations. It is called The Practice of the Presence of God, and it is thought to be one of the most widely read books of the last four centuries. This shortorder cook has outsold many popular contemporary novelists, and his book is still on best-seller lists.
Brother Lawrence said: “The most holy and necessary practice in our spiritual life is the presence of God. That means finding constant pleasure in His divine company, speaking humbly and lovingly with Him in all seasons, at every moment, without limiting the conversation in any way.”

Caring for Those Who Care for Us
Pastor Appreciation Month reminds us to see, and support, the person behind the pulpit.
We often see our pastors on Sunday morning, but much of their ministry happens when no one else is watching. Pastors pray, prepare, counsel, lead and walk alongside people through life’s most meaningful and difficult moments. They carry the joys and burdens of their congregations, often long after the Sunday service has ended.
Recent research offers reasons for both encouragement and concern. Barna’s 2026 research, conducted through its State of the Church initiative in partnership with Gloo, found that pastoral exhaustion has declined and confidence in their calling has largely rebounded. However, only 52 percent of pastors say they are “very satisfied” with their vocation, compared with 72 percent in 2015.
When asked where they need the most help, 52 percent of pastors identified their mental and physical health, 41 percent named close and supportive relationships, and 36 percent pointed to financial stability.
More than two in five pastors say they often feel isolated, and only one in three has someone outside the church in whom they can truly confide.
These findings remind us that appreciation should be more than a kind word once a year. Pastors say some of the most helpful forms of support, extended rest, sharing responsibilities and adjusting their workload, are also the hardest to access.
Meaningful Ways to Show Appreciation
Ask, don’t assume. Ask your pastor what would genuinely encourage or refresh them. It might be time away, a meal, help with a project or simply knowing someone is listening.
Make it personal. Write a note describing a specific sermon, prayer or act of kindness that made a difference in your life.
Help create margin. Provide a meal, childcare, a gift card or another thoughtful gesture that gives your pastor and family time to rest together.
Share the load. Volunteer, follow through on commitments and look for practical ways to make ministry a shared responsibility.
Honor healthy boundaries. Respect days off, vacation time and family time. Encourage your church to make genuine rest and periodic sabbaticals possible.
Remember the family. A pastor’s spouse and children often make unseen sacrifices. Include them in your expressions of gratitude.
Pray - and tell them you are praying. Ask how you can pray specifically and continue praying throughout the year.
Behind every sermon is a person who also needs prayer, friendship, rest and encouragement. This October, let’s do more than thank our pastors: let’s help care for them as faithfully as they care for us.

6. Allow the television to complete the entire scan. This may take several minutes.

Moments of Reflection
Rooted Through Every Season
As September gives way to October, the changing landscape reminds us that no season lasts forever. The air grows cooler, daylight becomes shorter, and once-green leaves begin turning brilliant shades of gold, orange and red. Yet while we notice what is changing above the ground, something important remains hidden beneath it—the roots.
Our lives have seasons too. Some are filled with new beginnings and visible growth. Others bring uncertainty, loss or changes we did not expect. During these times, it can be tempting to focus only on what we see happening around us.
But God often does His deepest work in the unseen places, strengthening our faith through prayer, His Word, obedience and the encouragement of others.
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water….” Jeremiah 17:7–8
Jeremiah describes the person who trusts in the Lord as a tree planted beside the water. When difficult seasons come, that tree does not need to be afraid because its roots remain connected to a life-giving source.
As routines become busy again and another year moves toward its final months, perhaps the most important question is not, “How can I control this season?” but “Where are my roots?”
When our peace depends on circumstances, it changes as quickly as autumn leaves. But when we are rooted in Christ, His grace steadies us. He may use a changing season to deepen our trust, remove distractions or prepare us to bear new fruit.
This fall, may we return to God’s Word, make room for quiet prayer and encourage the people He has placed around us. Seasons will continue to change, but our faithful God never will. Rooted in Him, we can keep growing in grace and sharing hope wherever He has planted us.
