Tasting – October 2 The First Friday Wine Tasting on October 2 from 5:30 to Halloween Monster Mash – 6:30pm will feature Grizzly Peak Winery. Glow Light Golf – October 6

Come out for our first glow light golf event! If you’ve never played glow light golf before you are going to want to sign up and join us. This is an evening filled with fun golf, warming food and cozy cocktails. Dinner at 7:00pm, Golf at 8:00pm and Dessert at 9:15pm. $25 per person includes golf, dinner, and a hot toddy. Harvest Moon Dinner – October 24

This dinner is a wonderful evening celebrating the bounty of the season. This will be a three-course dinner beginning with a Lobster Bisque with Sherry Cream followed by a main course of Beef Wellington. From The Manager It has now been a full seven months I have been at Rogue Valley and I have experienced the whole golf season with you. I have been very impressed with the activities we have hosted as well as the club itself. All of the events have been enjoyed by the members and have kept the club active. I have enjoyed everything from the Terrace Opening through the Men’s and Ladies Member-Guest events, the Pairs Tournament and the Southern Oregon Golf Championship.

Everything everyone told me about these great events has been true. They are fun and such a positive experience for all the participants. Having had the opportunity to experience all of these events first hand, has me looking forward to how we can improve them, if that’s possible, for the years to come.

Over the past six weeks we completed the “State of the Club” roadshow which culminated with a vote for the assessment on September 23. As this article is being written before the vote has been tallied, I wanted to give you words of encouragement. Regardless of what side you are on, or what your position is on the subject, once the vote has been counted, the majority will have spoken.

Let’s take that information and move forward.

ment and the vote, some positive, and some negative. We are all here to enjoy our Club and I would like to see everyone come together and look at the positive attributes and move forward.

As we look forward, we have presented a draft of the very exciting 2016 Rogue Valley Social Calendar. I am confident you are going to be impressed with the creativity of our staff. This is a first here at Rogue and you should be looking forward to receiving it in the mail around the first of December.

Everyone here is looking forward to next year and they have been working hard on events, both old and new. As you will see, we have left some dates open to respond to “pop up” requests from the membership for more entertainment opportunities.

Don’t forget, we have a new event this year, Franc D’Ambrosio! He will be joining us on December 7 at the Club. Be sure to put it on your calendar and look for all the details coming soon!

RVCC Golf News Alan Holmes/Dom Provost Scholarship Tourney The club’s annual scholarship tournament is coming October 17. The format is a two person scramble. Cost is $100/player and includes golf, awards banquet, KP’s, long drives and all prizes associated with the tournament. This year we have put together an impressive raffle following the tournament. We have eight tickets to the Oregon vs USC football game along with a jet to pick you up and bring you home. The Lesson Tee Another tremendous success for our SOGC. Congrats to Tracy and his staff for their part...24/7.

This year’s experience was a new one for me as my 16 year old son competed for the first time. Reese did well, getting beat in the quarterfinals of the Men’s Championship Flight on the 18th hole. He had a chance to compete in other events during the same time but chose the SOGC. This tournament is big!

Reese had a chance to caddy for multi-time champion George Mack in the Super Sr. Finals. Extra holes with George buried behind a very large pine. My expert analysis as I drove by, “he’s dead!” A true competitor to the end, he snapped a shot that hooked about twenty yards to within 20 feet from the pin. His caddy, as all of us, were in awe. Maybe not so much about the shot, but in the lack of “quit.” Great lesson for a young, aspiring golfer.

As I’m sure you know, I could go on forever. But I’ll finish with a thought about getting better. Don’t wait until next year to get better. We have a new indoor facility with a Launch Monitor and a covered and heated teaching area. If you are interested in consulting about HOW to get better, let us know and maybe we can help.

Hard to believe but it’s true...summer is behind us. As usual, I want to remind everyone that October is a fantastic month in Southern Oregon. Lots of great golf weather and cooler temps. Don’t let it go to waste. So, having concluded the bulk of our tournament season and, for most of us, no big events on the horizon for which to prepare, I thought I’d just offer a potpourri of observations from a busy summer.

Superintendent Craig Hilty and his staff have done a fabulous job maintaining our course through a difficult summer. Craig gets his ear bent plenty and always handles it with grace. We’re lucky to have him.

How many of you have taken advantage of our many fine reciprocal courses? I have had the opportunity these many years to play most all of them and can say that if you haven’t, you are missing out on one of the great advantages of being a member at RVCC. Lots of talk about Tiger Woods on all of the golf related telecasts. Zzzzzzzz. How about senior player Davis Love III winning on the “kids” tour? I couldn’t help notice how easy Davis made everything look, especially compared with how difficult Tiger makes it all seem. Sure, we all know that golf is a tough sport, but isn’t that one of the things that separates the pros from us mere mortals...how eaaassyy they make it look. I’m certain, however, that Tiger is on the right track when he spoke of getting “more fit” as the answer to his golf issues. Hmmm.

Grounds Report With another extremely successful Southern Oregon Golf Championship in the books, your grounds maintenance staff will be focusing first and foremost on keeping your golf course in fantastic shape while also focusing on aerifying greens, tees and fairways. I am hoping by the time this is published, we will have completed greens and tee aerification and have moved onto the fairway aerification and sand topdressing phase. Fairways will be completed at a pace of one or two fairways per day. The golf hole we are aerifying and topdressing on that particular day will be closed.

We will, weather dependent, complete all 27 fairways in the months of October and November. Thank you for your patience ahead of time while we aerify your course and allow the turf to BREATH and DRAIN while continually improving playing surfaces!!

October will also begin the leaf clean-up on the course.

This arduous task is one we also hope to keep under control with minimum impact to your golf game. We will begin each day with one or two turbine blowers that blow at speeds of 175 MPH and backpack blowers to move the leaves off and away from the main playing corridors. We then send out mulching deck mowers to mulch up a majority of the leaves.

There are certain areas we will manually pick up and remove leaves and take to the recycle debris pile on #1 Oaks Course.

Naturally, with the amount of deciduous trees on the RVCC property, there will be days that leaves are falling faster than we can keep up, but know we will be keeping up as quickly as possible to allow your golf to be uninterrupted.

The cartpath behind #3 green on the Rogue Course has been extremely uncomfortable to drive over due to the roots of the tree right next to the curb will be removed and replaced during the month of October. Unfortunately, a casualty of this will be the removal of the tree causing all of the root issues.

Many ideas were considered, but ultimately the best longterm solution is to remove the tree. The roots have reached across the path and are already buckling the curb on the #4 tee side as well, and roots are creeping up the hill towards #3 green and our mowers are hitting these roots causing blade damage. This tree is also in direct line of the sun during the cold weather months causing this green to be one of the last to thaw during frost delays. So, ultimately, it was decided that this specific tree would be best served by being removed.

Lastly, I would also like to remind you all to continue to fill or replace your divots, fix your ball marks and rake the bunker after use. I wish you all happy golfing this fall season.

The ball must be lifted and dropped at the nearest point to where the ball lay that (a) is not nearer the hole, (b) avoids intervention and (c) is not in a hazard or on a putting green.

If the player’s ball lies on the putting green and an immovable obstruction within two club-lengths of the putting green intervenes on his line of putt, the player may take relief as follows: The ball must be lifted and placed at the nearest point to where the ball lay that (a) is not nearer the hole, (b) avoids intervention and (c) is not in a hazard.

The ball may be cleaned when lifted.

Exception: A player may not take relief under this Local Rule if interference by anything other than the immovable obstruction makes the stroke clearly impracticable.

Penalty for Breach of Local Rule: Match play - Loss of hole; Stroke play - Two strokes Note: The Committee may restrict this Local Rule to specific holes, to balls lying only in closely mown areas, to specific obstructions, or, in the case of obstructions that are not on the putting green, to obstructions in closely mown areas if so desired. “Closely mown area” means any area of the course, including paths through the rough, cut to fairway height or less.

Rules of Golf Local Rule under #6 of Appendix 1 Immovable Obstructions Close to Putting Green Rule 24-2 provides relief, without penalty, from interference by an immovable obstruction, but it also provides that, except on the putting green, intervention on the line of play is not, of itself, interference under this Rule.

However, on some courses, the aprons of the putting greens are so closely mown that players may wish to putt from just off the green. In such conditions, immovable obstructions on the apron may interfere with the proper playing of the game and the introduction of the following Local Rule providing additional relief, without penalty, from intervention by an immovable obstruction would be warranted: “Relief from interference by an immovable obstruction may be taken under Rule 24-2.

Over The Tee Cup RVCC LADIES AT MICHELBOOK INVITATIONAL Three teams from RVCC attended the 35th annual Ladies Invitational at Michelbook Country Club in McMinnville in August. Deb Stuart and Barb Pinkham won third gross in the “A� Flight while Gail Jones and Pam Schepis were third net in the same flight. In addition to the golf, they managed to fit in wine tasting at some of the local wineries. Congratulations, ladies!

Pan-Seared Salmon with Kalamata Olives and Salsa Cruda Ingredients 2 large plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped (about 1 cup) 1/3 cup pitted kalamata olives, sliced 2 tablespoons finely chopped red onion 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 1 teaspoon lemon zest 3/4 teaspoon salt, divided 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided 4 (8-ounce) skin-on frozen salmon fillets, thawed 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

Combine first 5 ingredients, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 2 tablespoons oil in a small bowl. Mix well, and set aside.

Heat remaining 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sprinkle salmon with pepper and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt. Place

salmon in skillet, skin sides up; cook 5 minutes on each side or until skin is crisp and fish flakes easily with a fork.

Transfer salmon to serving plates, and top each fillet evenly with tomato mixture.

On The Courts Tennis Center Schedule We have a lot of opportunities for you to join one of the many drop-ins or coached sessions. It’s a great chance to connect with other players and their groups. Our two pros, Kory and Andris, will make it challenging and fun.

2015 USTA League Tennis The 2015 League season is underway. What a great way to hone your game and spend time with other teams in and around our area.

Miscellaneous Don’t forget you can order food to go! It can be ready for pick-up when your game is over and is an easy way to meet your food minimum requirement.

TENNIS TIPS

To help avoid injury don’t forget your stretches, particularly after match stretches. Here are some examples.

Post-Match Stretches 1. Shin/Tibialis Anterior Stretch Stand tall and keep your feet hip-distance apart. Take one foot and move it 2 inches behind you. Place your weight on the front of your toes and feel the stretch in the shin. Hold for one minute and switch legs 2. Standing Forward Fold Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart. Slowly roll your head down towards your feet and try to reach for your shins, toes or ground. Allow your neck to relax and hands dangle. You’ll feel your hamstrings and lower back stretch. Hold for about 45 seconds to a minute.

3. Standing Hamstring Stretch This is great for the calves and hamstrings. Start standing tall, feet hip-distance apart. Step the right foot out in front of you about 2 feet. Hinge at the hips and reach towards your toes. Bend your left leg slightly to help you reach forward. Hold for 30 seconds to a minute and then switch legs.

4. Figure Four Stretch This is a great hip opener and IT band stretch. Start standing tall.

Make sure to keep your core in and shoulders back. Lift your right knee up and place the right ankle on the left thigh. Begin to shift your weight back, slightly onto your heel. Once you feel stable, bend your standing leg and slowly lean forward. Hold for 30 seconds to a minute and then switch sides.

5. Runner’s Lunge Start in a lunge position, front knee is bent over your ankle and back leg is straight back. Place both hands inside your foot, place your hands directly under the shoulders. Allow your knee to open

up slightly as you lean forward. Hold for a minute and then switch legs.

6. Pigeon Stretch From runner’s lunge position, lower your back leg to the ground and walk your front foot to the opposite shoulder, and then place your knee on the ground. Your front leg should look like the number seven. Flex your front foot so it stays in place. Take a peek at your back foot and make sure it’s straight. Place your hands in front of you and slowly lean forward. Go as far as your body will let you and hold for 1 to 3 minutes on each side.

7. Hurdler’s Stretch Start sitting in a “V” position; keep your back straight and your shoulders back. Take your right leg, bend it at the knee, and place the right foot close to the left inner thigh. Turn your shoulders to face the left leg and begin to hinge at the hips. Make sure your back is straight and try to reach for your toes. If you can’t reach your toes, place your hands on your ankle or shin. Hold for a minute and then switch sides.

8. Supine Twist For an easy lower back stretch lay on the ground, facing up. Bring your arms out to a “T.” Slowly move one leg across the body and guide your knee toward the ground. (It’s okay if your knee doesn’t completely reach the floor). Turn your head to face the opposite side and try to keep your shoulders on the ground. Hold for a minute and then switch sides.

9. Child’s Pose Kneel on the ground, keep your big toes together, sit down on your heels, and separate your knees about hip-width apart. Lower your torso between your legs and walk your hands out in front of you. Try to keep your glutes down; your goal is to get them touching your heels. Relax your forehead on the ground and just breathe. Hold for at least a minute.

Got Core?

A few years ago during Christmas I was at the beach with my extended family.

Our Pagnini family get-togethers are also a chance to compete for the smartest, strongest and most faithful of us all!

A sibling rivalry sort of thing.

This holiday was no different.

After the arm wrestling competition there was a “core” competition.

Of course that included me, the core specialist of the family, and my nephew, who was the professional athlete of the family.

The test: We both had to lay on our back and keep a stable spine whilst flailing our arms and legs for a few hours....like babies! This means JUST like a baby... without lifting our rib cage or arching our low back.

Note: Developmentally, as babies, all we had was an “inner core,” the true support musculature of the spine (diaphragm at the top, thoracolumbar fascia, transverses abdominis and the pelvic floor muscles at the bottom.) The outer reinforcement muscles (rectus abdominis, obliques and back muscles , arm and leg muscles) developed later. As brain develops, so does body control.

Ready, Set, Go! “Waaa!!” We both wailed. After about nine minutes my nephew gave out. Now, my nephew’s abs are ripped! Me? Well..they are not ripped.

So what was this about?

Simple. He has a strong outer core that can fold under pressure because it lacks a strong inner core to maintain.

Me, on the other hand, I have a strong inner core that was designed for pressure! My outer core is just fine and maintains well, systematically reinforcing my inner core.

How to tell if you have a strong core?

Go back to baby!

Wail, crawl and stand up while maintaining perfect spine posture without using arms or legs.
