RVCC Clubs News Book Club – February 2

The Book Club meeting will take place Tuesday, February 2 at 4:00pm. Our book will be The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman. Pat Wintemute will be our presenter.

This book explores the clash between a small county hospital in California and a refugee family from Laos over the care of Lia Lee, a Hmong child diagnosed with severe epilepsy.

Lia’s parents and doctors both wanted what was best for Lia, but the lack of understanding between them led to tragedy.

RVCC Golf News Re-Grip Special Have you noticed your grips getting a little slick? It’s time to have them changed. For the month of February we will be offering a re-grip special of three or more in stock grips at 20% off. Stop in the Pro Shop and check out our selection grips. Find the grip you like and we will gladly re-grip your clubs for you.

Cart Lease Openings Don’t have a golf cart? Don’t want the hassle of maintaining a private cart? We will provide you with one of ours like it’s your own. For an annual fee of $1,200 or $105/month you can join our cart lease program. While on the program we will make a cart available to you upon request for golf here at RVCC. We currently have two spots open. Call the Pro Shop to reserve your spot.

Super Bowl Tourney Yes, it is here already. The Super Bowl Tourney will be held on Friday, February 5 with a 12:00pm shotgun on the Rogue Course. The format is a three-person best ball. Each team will use their two best net balls on the even numbered holes and one gross and one net on the odd numbered holes. There are men and women divisions. The cost is $30 per player. Sign up in the Pro Shop.

High School Golf The High School Golf season will be starting in mid-February here at RVCC. The club annually hosts the varsity boys and girls teams from North Medford, South Medford and St. Mary’s schools. This is a total involvement of about 40 students with a large part of these kids already members of RVCC. The schools are allowed to use the golf course, practice facilities, driving range and putting greens after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The coaches are REQUIRED to be on site with the students at all times. The coaches and students will be fully informed as to the club rules, dress codes, member priority and all other information necessary to use our facility with the members in mind.

The hosting of these schools follows a long-standing tradition of the Club in supporting Junior Golf. The students are very appreciative and cooperative during their time here at the Club. They do help the Golf Shop Staff when asked for assistance in volunteering time, sand & seeding or anything else we may need here at the club.

the fund raising done by the RVCC Shoot Out held in June.

Each school may use this money as they choose to assist their golf program in travel, food, equipment, etc.

Youth Golf Program Sign-ups for the 2016 version of the Youth Golf Program is set to start on March 1st with sign-ups in the Golf Shop.

This annual program starts June 1st after the High School Golf Programs have completed their season of activity. The first 75 players to sign-up will be included in the program.

The program is open to non-member students from the seventh grade through High School and students in college golf programs. Each student must be sponsored by an RVCC member (one student per member). The students may play with their sponsor anytime the sponsor wishes to bring the student when course rules allow juniors to play. In addition, the students may play on their own on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2pm to 4pm. The fee for this annual program is $100 and all the money goes to the RVCC Junior Golf Fund. Rules of Golf Workshop On February 13 the Oregon Golf Association will be holding a Rules of Golf workshop at RVCC. This is one of five regional workshops that the OGA will be conducting throughout Oregon. Regional Rules of Golf Workshops are designed for individuals who are familiar with the game and wish to acquire a better understanding of the Rules of Golf. The workshop will focus on the more commonly used Rules of Golf and the associated definitions. Space is limited to the first 40 participants at each location. You can sign up with the OGA or pick up a form at the Pro Shop to be completed returned to the OGA. Here is some additional information: The $35 entry fee includes: 8 hours of Rules instruction The Rules of Golf book (2016) Hosted coffee, tea, water Hosted Lunch (12:00 – 1:00pm) Materials: Please bring writing materials including paper, pen and/or pencil.

The Lesson Tee One of my favorite parts of teaching has become the “playing lesson.” Maybe a part of the fact that it has become my favorite is that it has definitely become a student favorite.

The feedback is consistently positive. So, what is it about this format that has both the student and the teacher enjoying the experience? Here are some thoughts.

• The relaxed atmosphere. It doesn’t always start out that way for everyone...many students want to perform well for the teacher. This can create some initial tension that goes away in a few minutes. Once the student realizes that we are there to help them become a better “player,” not how well you play at that moment, the atmosphere lightens.

• The potential for learning is definitely a two way street.

Meaning, the golfer can learn and the teacher has a tremendous opportunity to observe the student in action. Seeing what tendencies a golfer has while playing can be of real assistance as we move forward to help you realize your potential as a golfer.

• Non-range like situations. Simulating uphill, downhill, side hill and grass differences is just not available on a driving

range tee. This not only helps you understand how to deal with these differences but how these situations affect the ball flight.

• Observing how you handle on-course challenges helps the teacher know where you might be costing yourself valuable shots. One of the greatest differences between those that play professionally and the everyday amateur is the understanding of what shots should or should not be attempted.

Trying shots that the situation won’t allow or is outside of the golfer’s individual ability is one of the biggest reasons for added strokes on the scorecard. A very typical problem is club choice and understanding just when a certain just club won’t work.

How each of us learns is very individual. Many of us are on our best behavior on the driving range and typically revert to our tendencies in on-course situations. Think about a playing lesson to give your instructor the opportunity to observe and address your areas of needed improvement.

Grounds Report After wild weather in December, January has been fairly mild. We recorded 7.61 inches of precipitation. Fortunately, along with the rain, the mountains recorded record snowfall! This is very welcomed news, and has put a major dent in the 3 year drought that Southern Oregon has endured. For those of you who did the rain and snow dances this past fall, I sincerely thank you! It would not hurt us to keep the precipitation train rolling right through spring as well…so keep dancin.’

We have experienced more frost delays this winter than we encountered last year. This is always an inconvenience for the golfers but does provide benefits for the golf course. The frozen temperatures allow the grass plant to slow its growth down to a slow crawl. This allows our staff to focus on winter projects (tee leveling, irrigation issues, tree work, cartpath edging, etc.) rather than mowing the turf. When the turf is frozen, and we are under a frost delay, it is extremely important to stay off the grass. Grass plants are made up of mostly water (over 80%), this means that the grass blade freezes.

It also freezes the dew that has formed on the outside of the grass blade. When walked on or driven over, during such conditions, this causes the grass blade to actually break and cells within the plant rupture, thus wounding or killing the

grass plant. Typically, the damage does not show up until days later. You might have noticed tire tracks on holes 8-12 on the Rogue Course, those grass blades are dead (see picture below). These were done by a golf cart that drove on the course while the course was under a frost delay. I am happy to note the only damage that occurred was held to fairways and not greens. These tracks will be noticeable until the soil temperatures warm and the grass starts to grow again, then we may need to aerify the tracks and follow up with over seed. With respect to frost delays, please understand that we will get you on the course as quickly as possible when no damage will occur. Thank you for your patience ahead of time for the pesky frost delay days!!

Please continue to fix your ball marks and one other on the greens, fill or replace all divots taken on the course and please rake the bunkers after you have hit your shot. It is also Rogue Valley Country Club policy to leave the rakes on the outside of the bunkers when you’re finished raking your footprints. Leaving the rakes outside the bunker is a USGA recommendation as well. Lastly, please feel free to contact me with any of your questions!

Over The Tee Cup LONDON FOG – MARCH 3 Save the date and mark your calendar to attend the annual London Fog which officially starts the golfing season for the RVWGA. The morning festivities will begin with the traditional “Fog drink” which comes either in leaded or unleaded varieties. Brunch will be followed by a brief business meeting and introductions of key personnel. If you are new, this is a great time to meet and mingle with other lady golfers and sign up for either the 9-hole or 18-hole group. Membership Chair Rosemary Harrington will be available to assist new ladies with any questions you may have about signing up or if you have changes to your information included in the membership booklet.

Watch for further information and details but plan on being there!

OWGA OWGA (Oregon Womens Golf Association) is an organization that allows RVCC ladies with handicap index of 25 or less to join. Annual dues ($100) entitle you to participate in tournaments in 15 of the private clubs in Oregon. Pam Turnipseed and Annette Holman are the RVCC liaisons and will have the schedule and signup information at the London Fog. This is a wonderful opportunity to play on the finest golf courses

in the state. Travel with golf friends, play beautiful courses throughout the state…what more is there to ask for?

Notorious Nick Nemetz – North Side Mob Boss. Since the rise of organized crime, Nick’s operation has done nothing but prosper. With Nick having so much power, he seems to have a lot going for (and against) him. Male. A real mob father. He easily commands the respect of others.

Flora Nemetz-Gadora – Notorious Nick’s Ex-wife. Caught cheating, Nick divorced Flora immediately a month ago. Left without anything, Flora’s romantic interested has shifted from one mob boss to another. Female. A gold-digger at heart, always looking for a fast-paced life and self-gratification.

Molly Moll – Notorious Nick’s Girlfriend. One of the most popular women in town, Molly had no interest in Nick until she realized what he could do for her movie career. Female. A prima donna. Molly loves to be the center of attention and will go to all lengths to get it.

Cindy Butt – Cigarette Girl at The Juice Joint. Responsible for ruining many lives, Cindy doesn’t stop at spreading rumors to get her way. Female. Vindictive, ruthless and scheming. She shows no remorse for evil things that may lurk in her past and she is quick to lie about them.

Bernie Booze – Bootlegger. Bernie has one of the most successful bootlegging businesses in town before Notorious Nick had them blacklisted. Gino Gin – Bartender. As the eyes and ears of The Juice Joint, Gino may know more than they let on.

Male or female. A good listener and even better at scheming, they will have no shame in exploiting others.

Flirty Flapper – Juice Joint Patron. It is no secret t 1hat Flirty is looking for a man with power and she will stop at nothing to get it. Female. Bold, modern and looking for what she wants. Flirty won’t let anyone come in her way.

Anna Marie – Rosie’s Daughter. Still mourning the loss of her father, Louie Marie, Anna is ready to seek revenge at whatever cost. Female. Spoiled and naïve. Anna doesn’t always know what she is up against.

The donation included eight tickets to the Ducks/Trojans game, a jet to and from the game in Los Angeles, and limousine service from the jet to the game and from the game back to the jet. The gentlemen met the morning of the game at the Club to have breakfast, flew to the game and flew home, ending the day with dinner at the Club. They all said it was an amazing experience and they had a great time.

From The Chef Spring is around the corner, and we have a very exciting month at the club. February 2nd we will begin our Gourmet Burger Night every Tuesday, featuring specialty burgers such as Buffalo, blended burgers with beef, pork & lamb, mini sliders, Sidewinder fries and more! We will also be offering exciting gourmet slider options for the Super Bowl Sunday party.

Bring your sweetie to the Valentine’s Dinner on Saturday, February 13 where we will be featuring Surf & Turf with Filet Mignon & Lobster Tail, Duck Breast with Cherry Confit or Grilled Salmon with Asian Glaze. For dessert we will have Long Stemmed Tuxedo Chocolate Covered Strawberries and a Lille Belle artisanal chocolate tasting.

I have long had a dream of being a restaurateur, and my passion for delicious libations has inspired me to create a cocktail list that I believe will be enjoyable and fun! With the recent trends in mixology culture, as well as membership demand for more cocktail options, an evolving and weather-appropriate menu will be featured on dining tables throughout our Club. Club Happenings Looking Forward to the New Year Dear Members, We have barely begun 2016 and the Club is off to a busy and successful start!

Through the holiday madness at the end of the year many of you may have noticed a push towards the revitalization of the Tennis Club at RVCC. In October, we began advertising a 3-month tennis preview membership that concluded on December 31, 2015. We had a great response from the community and, with the help of the RVCC staff and efforts of the Tennis Center, we were able to sell over 30 tennis preview memberships!

Other changes involve the rvcc.com website. The staff has been working diligently on adding current information to the website on both the public and member only pages. Some of these changes include an updated calendar on the member log-in side, as well as dining and tennis information and new membership category information. In addition, you will notice the new “Massage Therapy” tab online. You can now make reservations for massage therapy and physical therapy by

calling 541-727-8846. Lori Rogers, Massage Therapist, will be available for limited hours until we build up a larger clientele.

You can book appointments Tuesdays and Thursdays, between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm.

In addition to these changes, I am excited for many upcoming events. This month we are starting Gourmet Burger Tuesdays, our second wine tasting on the first Saturday of the month, cooking class, the Teddy Abrams event, and many more! Our last few events have been widely successful and well received thanks to the membership participation and the RVCC staff! Hopefully everyone is enjoying the social calendar and planning ahead.

I am looking forward to the rest of 2016 and all it will bring!
