Manager’s Report

September 04, 2026

Dear TGO Community,

Congratulations to The Great Outdoors Golf Club for being recognized as Brevard County’s Best Public Golf Course at the 2026 Community Choice Awards, hosted by Florida Today. This achievement reflects the pride, hard work, and dedication shown every day by our entire Golf Maintenance and Golf Shop staff. From maintaining the course to the highest standards to welcoming residents and guests with exceptional service, their efforts help create the experience that makes The Great Outdoors Golf Club such a special place to play. Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote and support The Great Outdoors Golf Club. We are honored by this recognition and look forward to continuing to provide an outstanding golf experience for our residents, guests, and the entire Brevard County community. The Pavilion project is now in the final detail stages of completion, and it looks amazing. The new space is really coming together and will be a terrific addition for residents to enjoy. As we get closer to announcing the official opening date, we will be doing an open house so everyone can tour the completed Pavilion and see the improvements firsthand. More details regarding the opening date and open house will be shared shortly. So far, we have been fortunate this hurricane season, but history tells us that September can often be one of the most active months for Central Florida. Now is a good time to review your plans, check your supplies, and ensure you are prepared should a storm threaten our area. We have included important Hurricane Preparedness information on page 54. Now that September has arrived, more residents are beginning to return to TGO, bringing renewed energy and an increase in the activities and events that make our community such a special place to live. With so much coming up, The Happenings has brought back the “Mark Your Calendar” section on page 5. Be sure to review it, save the dates, and begin making plans for another busy and enjoyable season at TGO. As we prepare for the upcoming season, our CSA team is focused on completing major improvement projects and ensuring the community is ready for increased traffic and activity. Our Golf Course and Blue Heron Restaurant teams are excited to welcome back our seasonal residents and are ready to provide another great season of service, activities, and hospitality. As always, if you need anything, have questions, or need assistance please feel free to stop by the CSA Office or reach out to our team. We are always happy to help! Best regards,

Shane Willey, General Manager On the Cover: We did it again! The Great Outdoors Golf Course has been named Best Golf Course in Brevard County in the 2026 Community’s Choice Awards - marking TGO’s fourth time receiving this honor! Pictured are General Manager Shane Willey, Grounds Manager John Smith and Golf Course Manager Garret Howell. This award is truly a team effort and a reflection of the dedicated staff who keep TGO Golf looking and playing its best every day.

Three Tips for Playing in the Wind Wind is one of golf’s greatest challenges. It can make a familiar golf course feel completely different from one day to the next. While you can’t control the wind, you can control how you respond to it. Here are three simple tips for playing better when the wind blows. 1. Adjust Your Speed, Not Just Your Club Most golfers know they need more club into the wind and less club downwind. The problem is that many also swing harder into the wind and softer downwind, which often makes the wind’s effects even worse. Into the wind, take more club and make a slower, more controlled swing. A smoother swing typically produces less spin and a more penetrating ball flight. Downwind, don’t be afraid to take more club and swing a little harder. A tailwind reduces the ball’s effective spin, which can cause it to fall out of the air sooner than expected. Creating a little more speed can help generate the spin needed to keep the ball flying efficiently. 2. Keep Your Balance The wind can make golfers feel uncomfortable over the ball. A strong gust may arrive during the swing, and uneven footing can make the challenge even greater. Focus on staying balanced from start to finish. A stable setup and balanced finish make it easier to deliver the club consistently regardless of the conditions. If you can maintain your balance, you’ll give yourself the best chance to produce the shot you intended. 3. Play Conservatively Wind increases uncertainty. Even well-struck shots can be pushed offline or fly a different distance than expected. When conditions are windy, give yourself more room away from hazards, tucked pins, and penalty areas. Aim for larger targets and accept that getting the ball safely on the green is often a better strategy than attacking a difficult flag. The golfers who score best in the wind aren’t always the ones who hit the ball the best. They’re often the ones who manage risk the best. The next time the wind picks up, remember: adjust your speed, keep your balance, and play conservatively. The wind may still be challenging, but your scores will thank you.

6

Top: Into the wind take a lower lofted club and swing slower. Your finish may be shorter as a result. Lowe: Downwind a faster swing is needed to produce more height and spin. Use a higher lofted club and give it a full rip!

We Did It Again!

Our TGO Golf Course was Voted as the Best Golf Course in Brevard County by the Community’s Choice Awards A Special Congratulations to Shane Willey, Garret Howell, John Smith and the entire Golf Course Team for their dedication and hard work. “Winning Best Golf Course in Brevard County is something everyone at The Great Outdoors can be proud of. To receive this honor for the fourth time makes it even more meaningful because it shows the consistent quality of our golf course and the dedication of the people who care for it every day. I’m extremely proud of our golf staff and grounds team for earning this recognition for TGO.” - Shane Willey - General Manager of TGO “Winning this award again is a tremendous honor, and it truly takes a team effort. I’m especially proud of our Golf Shop staff who work behind the scenes handling tee times, scheduling, bookings and the many details that keep our daily golf operations running smoothly. Their commitment to providing a welcoming experience for our members, residents and guests is a big part of what makes TGO special.” - Garret Howell, TGO Golf Professional ”Receiving this award is a great recognition for our entire grounds team. Maintaining a golf course is a seven-day-a-week job, and our staff is often out here working in the early morning hours, long before the first golfer arrives. Florida weather can present plenty of challenges, but this crew takes tremendous pride in the course every day. This award is a reflection of their hard work and dedication.” - John Smith, Assistant Superintendent, TGO Golf Course

Happenings Around TGO...

Our TGO Lawn Crew has certainly been hard at work this summer! With plenty of rain, hot summer days and Florida sunshine, keeping up with the fast-growing grass is no small task. Their hard work is paying off, as TGO’s common areas are looking green, lush and beautifully maintained.

The Pavilion is progressing very nicely. The interior is coming together with beautiful accent pieces and eventually artwork on the walls. There will be a separate kitchen area, large storage closet for the tables and chairs and ADA bathrooms at the opposite end.

The Spirit of Volunteering

The Great Outdoors is a busy place, with no shortage of activities and events to occupy our time. But have you ever found yourself with a free day or two and thought about doing something that would benefit the community - and might be interesting and enjoyable as well? If that thought has ever crossed your mind, you might want to consider the many volunteering opportunities available here at TGO. What are those opportunities, you might ask? They are varied and interesting, and some involve a bit of physical effort. All can be extremely rewarding and beneficial to the community. Volunteering is also a great way to stay connected with the community. You may get a chance to see the inner workings of an organization or group that you previously knew little about. You may also meet and interact with people you might not otherwise have gotten to know. TGO has a remarkably diverse population, and there are some very interesting people living here. Volunteering can provide a way to share your talents with the community while also learning some new ones. Even at my age, I try to learn something new each day. And even if you do not believe you have any talents that would be useful, you may be surprised. Something you may not consider a “talent” could be exactly what a group needs. The nice thing about volunteering is that there is usually no hard and fast There are countless ways timetable for the time you put in. Most organizations and groups are very to give back to TGO - and flexible and accommodating.

sometimes the greatest

The activities at TGO are varied, and there are times when simply setting up tables at a festival or event, handing out programs at concerts or dis- contribution is simply being willing to help. tributing informational flyers can be extremely helpful.

There are also groups involved in outdoor activities, such as assisting with beautification projects, cleaning debris from walking trails, collecting boxes and bags of shredding materials from residents during Shred Day or cleaning debris from fire breaks. Every organization, group and many committees need volunteers. Contacting someone involved with any of these groups can put you in touch with the proper person to explain what is involved. Most are listed in The Happenings. Speaking of volunteers, the TGO Firewise USA Committee lost one of our longtime members and volunteers in May of this year. Ed Brown has been a member of the TGO Firewise USA Committee almost since its inception. He was remembered in an article in the last issue of The Happenings. Ed was a believer in fire prevention and fire safety and in wildfire prevention in particular. He wrote the Firewise articles for The Happenings for many years and was a valued resource for the committee. Ed was a volunteer’s volunteer in that he was there for whatever needed to be done. Giving 110% was “just average” for him. Like so many of us, we slow down as the years pass by, but his legacy will endure. The committee will miss his immense knowledge as well as his dry sense of humor. I know that I will miss our talks and his advice on many subjects. So, think about offering some of your time and talent to this wonderful community of ours. I know Ed would appreciate that. - Butch Jones -

WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT and the use of RV HOLDING TANK CHEMICALS Over the years we have had problems with our Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) due to some common chemicals used in RV holding tanks. These chemicals kill the beneficial bacteria that are necessary for the WWTP to function. When this happens, we must pump out the WWTP and have the wastewater hauled away at a high cost. In 2006, the Community Services Association had to spend over $200,000 in hauling and other costs in order to restore the WWTP to proper operation, this resulted in a special assessment of $150 per site. What can you do? Make certain that you do not use any RV holding tank treatments that contain any of the chemicals listed below. If your RV holding tank currently contains any of these chemicals, use the official dump station near the rally lot, not your home sewer system.

AVOID RV TANK TREATMENTS THAT CONTAIN THESE CHEMICALS: ACTIVE INGREDIENT

THREATS TO HUMAN & ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

Bronopol (bromo-nltropropane-dial)

Bacterial pesticide

Dowacil (1-(3-chorallyl)-3,4, 7-triaza-1-azoniaadamantane chloride)

Bacterial pesticide (EPA states “Do not discharge effluent containing this product to sewer systems without previously notifying the local sewage treatment plant authority.”)

Formaldehyde (also known as Formalin; degradate of bronopol)

Kills or retards bacterial growth, recognized by EPA as probable carcinogen(1); moderately toxic to Humans(2)

Glutaraldehyde (also known as embalming fluid)

Retards bacterial growth and covers sewage odor. Is an eye/ inhalation irritant.

Paraformaldehyde (polymerized formaldehyde)

Very toxic to humans(3). (See formaldehyde)

Para-dichlorobenzene (common ingredient In mothballs, urinal cakes, and toilet bowl fresheners)

Known carcinogen(1) and drinking water contaminant; moderately toxic to humans.

(1) A carcinogen causes cancer (2) Lethal dose for 150 lb person is between 1 ounce to 16 ounces (3) Lethal dose for 150 lb person is between 1 teaspoon to 1 ounce NOTE: The University of Arizona and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have placed these chemicals on their alert list, and recommend not using RV holding tank products that contain these active ingredients. RECOMMENDED TREATMENTS: If you find that It’s necessary to use a holding tank treatment In your RV, please use one of these ecologically friendly treatments listed below: RV Pro 200 (by Heartland Labs), Pure Power {by OP Products), Piranha (by Super Seal), Eco-Save (by Eco-Save Products), and other products that use enzymes and bacteria as their main Ingredients are also permissible. If you will use more water to flush and dump your holding tanks more frequently, you may not need to use any RV holding tank treatment. Thanks for your cooperation.

Wildfire Fighting - What You Neeed To Know In the Firewise USA articles we have covered quite a few topics. One that may not have been addressed is actual wildfire firefighting. First lets determine what is wildfire firefighting? It is the coordinated effort to prevent, suppress, and recover from wildfires on public and tribal lands, protecting lives, property, infrastructure, and ecosystems. It involves a wide range of roles, from prevention efforts to frontline suppression crews to specialized aviation and management teams. The U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior (including the Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service) are the primary agencies managing wildland fire. They hire firefighters year-round, with peak demand in fire-prone seasons. These agencies are assisted at a local and state level by the local fire departments, here at TGO we have the Brevard County Fire and Rescue (BCFR); the state forestry division, which is the Florida Forest Service (FFS); and the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) as well as the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FFWC) (which assist with prescribe burns at TGO). In the event of a wildfire at TGO, the first arriving units would most likely come from BCFR Station 24 located on Columbia Boulevard in Titusville and FFS. If needed units from BCFR station 23 located on South Park Ave and/or Titusville Fire Department Station 13 located on Barna Avenue would respond. In addition, units from the SJRWMD and FFWC could respond. The initial response from BCFR would be a Quint (a unit with a fire pump, water tank, hose bed and an aerial ladder), a Brush Truck (a four wheel drive one-ton truck with a water tank, pump, hose and tools) and Ambulance from Station 24. Those are the vehicles assigned to that station. That is also why you see the Quint arrive with the ambulance on medical calls to TGO. There are two paramedics on the ambulance and a Lieutenant, a Firefighter-Paramedic and a Firefighter-EMT on the Quint, so the Quint responds for manpower on those calls. A utility vehicle may also respond with a trailer and one or more 4-wheel ATV off road vehicles equipped with a water tank and pump. FFS and SJRWMD also utilize these vehicles. If needed, BCFR also has a few military surplus trucks that have off road capabilities, which are equipped with water tanks, pumps and hose reels for getting to the fire. When FFS arrives, you may see a truck with a bulldozer with a plow attached to the rear. This is for cutting additional fire lines, as needed. SJRWMD may respond with the Marshmaster witch is a tracked vehicle which looks similar to a tank without the gun turret. It carries a water tank and pump and can get just about anywhere. Wildfire firefighting tactics are a combination of active monitoring, containment, suppression, and protection strategies designed to stop or slow fire spread while protecting lives, property, and the environment. Below are steps that are taken in the firefighting process.

1. Monitor Firefighters actively observe fire behavior to ensure it does not cross containment lines. This includes stopping spot fires (fires outside the perimeter) and slopovers (fires crossing a containment line) quickly, and adjusting tactics if objectives are not being met. 2. Confinement A combination of direct and indirect actions, using natural topography, fuel breaks, and weather to manage the fire perimeter. This may involve creating control lines- cleared barriers that remove fuel from the fire’s path. 3. Contain A complete control line is established around the fire and any associated spot fires, reasonably expected to stop spread. This is often achieved through fire line construction using hand tools or heavy equipment to re- Marshmaster move vegetation and combustible material. 4. Point/Zone Protection Protecting specific high-value assets (e.g., buildings, infrastructure) without directly halting the main fire’s spread. This uses handline, water, foam, or other tools to shield critical areas. 5. Suppression All work to extinguish or limit wildfire spread, including direct attack, indirect attack, and mop-up. This may involve backfiring (deliberately setting controlled burns ahead of the fire to consume fuel and create a barrier), hot spotting (extinguishing residual heat sources after containment), and using water, foam, or retardants. 6. Mopping Up Post-attack operations to ensure no hot spots remain, often using thermal imaging and infrared tools to detect and extinguish residual embers firefighterline.com. 7. Spot Checking Returning to the fire scene to periodically check to ensure the fire has not reignited. There will be smoke and an occasional small flame inside the fire lines. These may be allowed to burn (if they are not a danger for spreading and well inside the fire line). Smoke may be there for a week or more after the fire has been extinguished. ADDITIONAL TECHNIQUES Backfiring / Burn Out: Controlled burns to remove fuel ahead of the fire, reducing its intensity and creating a buffer zone. Smokejumpers: In areas where a wildfire is consuming large acreages (thousands of acres) or in very remote areas, the U.S. Forest Service may call for Smokejumpers. These are highly trained and skilled forest firefighters who parachute into the remote fire areas and take on the task of firefighting with hand tools. They have no tanks or pumps (or water) unless there is a pallet drop. Tools, food and water are dropped on pallets to the Smokejumpers. The Smokejumpers come self-sufficient for 48 hours and if the operation is extended, camps are established as close to the area where they are working as possible. Smokejumpers are located all over the country and when activated, they drive or fly to their assigned area. /They may be deployed for a few days, weeks or months. Firebreaks: Clearing vegetation to create barriers that stop or slow fire spread. Mechanical Attack: Using dozers, plows, and other equipment to construct fire lines or push fire back. Aerial Attack: Dropping retardants or water to slow or stop fire spread. Minimum Impact Strategy (MIST): In wilderness areas, using tactics that meet objectives with minimal environmental and cultural impact. This has been a brief overview of what happens when a wildfire occurs. We hope that the only time you see this type of activity is during one of our prescribed burns. We are hoping to have at least one prescribed burn this fall.

Purple Martins - See You in 2027! A sure sign of late summer are the bare Purple Martin poles at Lake Judy. Once filled with white gourds and the song and flurry of purple martins, the poles now stand quietly awaiting spring and a new nesting season. Many thanks to Ron Peoples, who dismounted and washed out all of the Purple Martin gourd houses! After they finish drying on the Sawdust Club porch, Ron and his team will store them for the season until purple martins next return to central Florida. Thank you to all those who helped with nest checks and efforts to maintain the purple martin nests! The Purple Martin team is looking for help next year with nest checks. What Is a Purple Martin?

Each year, the return of Purple Martins to The Great Outdoors is a welcome sign that spring is on the way. These remarkable birds are the largest members of the swallow family in North America and are known for their graceful flight, social nature and distinctive appearance. Adult males are a deep, glossy blue-purple that can look almost black in certain light, while females and younger birds have more gray and brown coloring. Purple Martins are migratory birds, spending the winter months in South America, particularly Brazil, before making the long journey north to their breeding grounds in the United States and Canada. Florida is among the first places where they arrive, with some birds appearing as early as January. Their return to the same general nesting areas year after year makes their arrival especially interesting to birdwatchers. Unlike many birds that nest alone, Purple Martins enjoy A returning favorite at TGO, the Purple Martin brings color, graceful flight and a sure sign of spring. Photo by Chad Avian. company. They are colonial nesters, meaning numerous pairs will live together in specially designed multi-compartment houses or clusters of hollow gourds. In much of the eastern United States, Purple Martins have become highly dependent on people to provide these nesting sites. Once they find a successful location, they often return to it in following years. Purple Martins are also impressive aerial hunters. They feed almost entirely on flying insects, catching beetles, flies, moths, wasps, flying ants and other insects while soaring through the air. Their ability to twist, turn and change direction in flight makes watching them feed almost as entertaining as watching them gather around their nesting houses. During nesting season, a female typically lays several white eggs, and both parents help care for the young. As summer progresses, the birds begin gathering in increasingly large groups in preparation for their journey south. By late summer and early fall, most Purple Martins have departed Florida for South America. For TGO residents, their annual return is another reminder of the remarkable wildlife that shares our community. Keep an eye on the Purple Martin houses around TGO - you may be watching birds that have traveled thousands of miles to return to a familiar summer home.

The U.S.A. Highway System There’s a Reason for Those Highway Numbers Most of us have driven Interstate highways for decades without giving much thought to the numbers on the signs. We know I-95 runs along the East Coast, I-75 carries travelers through Florida, and I-10 stretches across the southern part of the country. But why those numbers? There is actually a system behind them - and once you understand it, a highway sign can tell you quite a bit about where you are and where the road is headed. The idea began long before America had its modern Interstate Highway System. In the early 1920s, long-distance automobile travel was becoming increasingly popular, but navigating across the country could be confusing. Major roads were often identified by colorful names such as the Lincoln Highway, Dixie Highway, Yellowstone Trail and National Old Trails Road. Many of these routes were promoted by private organizations, and roads could overlap or change names as motorists crossed from one state to another. Federal and state highway officials decided America needed something simpler: numbers. In 1925, the Joint Board on Interstate Highways developed a national numbering plan for what became the U.S. Highway System. The concept was wonderfully straightforward: highways running primarily east and west would receive even numbers, while highways running primarily north and south would receive odd numbers.

The most important east-west highways were generally assigned numbers ending in zero, while major north-south highways often ended in 1 or 5.

EAST - WEST ROUTES - EVEN NUMBERS I-10 - Southern Route Los Angeles • Phoenix • El Paso • San Antonio • Houston • New Orleans • Jacksonville I-20 - Southern Route West Texas • Dallas • Shreveport • Jackson • Birmingham • Atlanta • South Carolina I-40 - Southern/Central Route California • Arizona • Albuquerque • Oklahoma City • Little Rock • Memphis • Nashville • North Carolina I-70 - Central Route Utah • Denver • Kansas City • St. Louis • Indianapolis • Maryland I-80 - Northern Route San Francisco • Salt Lake City • Cheyenne • Omaha • Des Moines • Chicago • New York/New Jersey I-90 - Northernmost Major Cross-Country Route Seattle • Billings • Rapid City • Minneapolis • Madison • Chicago • Cleveland • Buffalo • Boston

NORTH - SOUTH ROUTES - ODD NUMBERS I-5 - West Coast Route Canadian Border • Seattle • Portland • Sacramento • Los Angeles • San Diego • Mexican Border I-15 - Western Interior Route Canadian Border • Montana • Salt Lake City • Las Vegas • Southern California • San Diego I-25 - Rocky Mountain Route Wyoming • Denver • Colorado Springs • Albuquerque • New Mexico I-35 - Central Route Minnesota • Minneapolis • Des Moines • Kansas City • Oklahoma City • Dallas/Fort Worth • San Antonio • Laredo I-65 - Eastern Interior Route Indiana • Louisville • Nashville • Birmingham • Mobile I-75 - Eastern Interior Route Michigan • Detroit • Cincinnati • Knoxville • Atlanta • Tampa • South Florida I-95 - East Coast Route Maine • Boston • New York • Philadelphia • Baltimore • Washington, D.C. • Carolinas • Georgia • Jacksonville • Miami

30

But there was another clever part of the system. With the original U.S. Highway network, east-west route numbers generally increased as you traveled south. U.S. 2 was placed near the Canadian border, while U.S. 90 crossed the southern United States. North-south numbers increased as you traveled west: U.S. 1 followed the East Coast, while U.S. 101 was placed along the Pacific Coast. The goal was to create an enormous imaginary grid over the United States. A driver who understood the numbering system could look at a highway number and immediately have a general idea of the road’s direction and location.

The Secret Behind the Signs Then came the Interstate Highway System. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, beginning the massive construction program that would transform automobile travel in America. When officials developed numbers for the new Interstate highways in 1957, they borrowed the same odd-and-even concept - but deliberately reversed the geographic numbering pattern so the new Interstate numbers wouldn’t be confused with existing U.S. highways.

The first digit provides another clue. Generally, an even first digit identifies a route that reconnects with its parent Interstate often a bypass or beltway around a city. An odd first digit usually identifies a spur that branches away from the main Interstate and does not reconnect. There are exceptions and unusual situations. Highways don’t always travel perfectly north-south or east-west, and geography, cities and later construction sometimes required compromises. A highway may twist considerably while still retaining the directional designation of its overall route. But the basic rule has survived remarkably well. So the next time you’re traveling somewhere unfamiliar, take another look at the highway shield. An even number tells you the highway is generally taking you east or west. An odd number tells you it is generally taking you north or south. And the number itself gives you a clue The meaning hidden in the three-digit Interstate numbers. about where that highway sits within the United States. Three-digit highways such as I-295, I-495 or I-275 are generally Nearly a century after highway officials first devised the idea, associated with a larger two-digit Interstate. The final two digits millions of Americans are still navigating according to that simusually identify the parent highway. For example, an I-295 is as- ple grid - most without ever realizing there was a system hiding in sociated with I-95. those familiar black-and-white numbers. That is the system we recognize today. On the Interstate System, even-numbered highways generally run east and west, with the numbers increasing as you travel north. I-10 crosses the southern United States, while I-90 travels across the northern part of the country. Odd-numbered Interstates generally run north and south, with numbers increasing as you travel east. I-5 follows the West Coast, while I-95 follows the East Coast. For those of us in Florida, that explains two very familiar highways. I-95 carries one of the highest two-digit odd numbers because it is one of the easternmost major north-south Interstate routes in America. I-75, farther west, carries a lower number. Meanwhile, I-10, crossing northern Florida, is an east-west highway and one of the southernmost major Interstates in the country.

A Minute with Meghan… Feeling the Heat: A New Way to Relax at TGO It’s hard to imagine wanting to sit in a heated box for relaxation when the heat index outside continually creeps up to ~115° each day! But humor me… Think about stepping into a warm, calming space where the heat feels soothing (rather than overwhelming) and walking out feeling refreshed, relaxed, and recharged. Sounds nice, right? When I first started working at TGO, I was tasked with finding a suitable replacement for the inoperable sauna in the Fitness Center. Through personal experience, education, and research, I proposed that we should install an infrared sauna, for the added health benefits as opposed to replacing it with a traditional sauna. Unlike traditional saunas, infrared saunas use lightbased heat that directly warms the body at lower air temperatures, rather than heating the air around the user. Infrared radiation penetrates deep into the skin, resulting in increased circulation and sweating at lower ambient temperatures (~110–140°F), compared with traditional saunas (~150–190°F). This approach provides a more comfortable heat that can be tolerated more easily for individuals who find traditional saunas too hot. Research suggests infrared saunas can provide similar or greater health benefits with improved comfort, compared to traditional saunas. Benefits include: improved circulation, support for cardiovascular health, pain relief and increased mobility, muscle recovery and reduced soreness, detoxification through perspiration, relaxation and stress reduction, improved mood and sleep, and cellular and immune system support. In addition to infrared heat, the sauna we purchased also includes red light therapy (RLT). Red light therapy is a treatment that uses low levels of red light to reportedly improve the health and appearance of your skin. NASA originally began experimenting with RLT on plant growth in space and later investigated its potential to help heal wounds in astronauts. Although the full benefits of RLT have yet to be determined, in small research studies, RLT has shown some promise. Red Light Therapy is thought to work by acting on

34

the “power plant” in your cells, called mitochondria, which provides more energy to other cells, so that they can work more efficiently. Studies published so far show some potential for certain conditions, but more studies need to be conducted. Some of the purported benefits of RLT are: stimulation of collagen production, increased blood circulation, reduced inflammation, improved wound healing, reduced appearance of stretch marks, wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots, improved facial texture and sun-damaged skin, improved acne and scars, and improved skin conditions like rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema. Unlike the cancer-causing ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun or tanning booths, RLT doesn’t use this type of light, appears to be safe, and isn’t associated with any side effects, when used as directed. As with any “treatment,” it is always best to consult your healthcare provider to determine if the use of an infrared sauna and RLT is safe for you. I’m am very excited to announce that our new infrared sauna has been delivered and installed! Our maintenance team is working diligently to ensure safety and put the final “aesthetic” touches on the sauna surround, so that it will be ready for use soon.

A few reminders as we open the new sauna for use: • Infrared saunas operate at a lower temperature than traditional saunas: The maximum recommended temperature is 130°F. • Allow the sauna to warm up for 15-20 minutes, or until it reaches 110°F. Start using the sauna within 10°F of the set point, to maximize benefits. • DO NOT exceed 30 minutes per session! • For sanitary reasons, please use a dry towel to sit on while using the sauna (wet towels can harm the interior surface of the sauna). • Remove all jewelry and articles that may conduct heat. • Do not touch any of the heating elements, including the gemstones or heating panels. • Stop using the sauna immediately if heat becomes uncomfortable. • Be sure to hydrate before and after your sauna session. • DO NOT SPLASH WATER ON ANY OF THE HEATING OR ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS!

Use of an infrared sauna is not recommended for Individuals with the following conditions are advised to individuals with the following conditions obtain physician consent before using the infrared sauna • Epilepsy • Pregnancy or lactating • Active cancer • Heart disease and/or other cardiovascular conditions • Broken bones or slipped disc • Diabetes • Infectious/contagious skin conditions; skin lesions, abra- • Using medications such as diuretics, barbiturates, sions and/or areas of inflammation/persistent erythema anticholinergics, and/or beta blockers • Under the influence of alcohol or drugs • Hemophiliacs/Individuals prone to bleeding • Individuals with pacemakers or defibrillators • Individuals with implants (metal, breast, etc.) • Individuals running a fever or insensitive to heat • In poor health

Whether you’re looking to relax after a workout, ease tired muscles, unwind after a long day, or simply try something new, our new infrared sauna offers another way to support your wellness routine. We’re excited to add this amenity to TGO and hope you’ll take the opportunity to step inside, slow down, and enjoy a little time for yourself. Cleveland Clinic. (2021, December 1). Red Light Therapy. Meet Blue Heron’s Employees... Chris Everson - Blue Heron’s Cook

Chris Everson may be a man of few words, but put him in a kitchen and he has plenty to say through his food. Chris joined the Blue Heron kitchen in April as one of the restaurant’s cooks, bringing with him years of experience and a love of cooking that began long before it became his profession. In fact, he got his start when he was only about 12 years old, helping with his father’s catering company. Originally from Orlando, Chris eventually turned that early experience into a career, attending culinary school and receiving formal training in French cuisine. Before coming to the Blue Heron, he worked at Vine & Olive. Today, Chris is part of the Blue Heron kitchen crew working to prepare more of the restaurant’s food in-house. It is a direction he enjoys. Chris works Monday through Thursday, generally from 10am until 9pm, making for four long days in the kitchen each week. He enjoys working with the current crew and says having a kitchen staff that gets along makes the job much easier. When asked what he most enjoys preparing, Chris quickly turns toward Asian and Pacific Rim cuisine. Pad Thai and dishes featuring ahi tuna are among his favorites, particularly when he can work with fresh ingredients. But if he had to choose one classic dish he especially enjoys preparing, it would be veal Marsala. And with his culinary background, Chris even had a wine pairing ready: a lighter Riesling to complement the Marsala sauce. Away from the kitchen, Chris’s free time revolves around a few simple pleasures as he enjoys fishing and, most importantly, spending time with his son and daughter. Chris seems perfectly comfortable keeping things simple. And when it comes to the kitchen, he’d much rather let the food do the talking.

Chrissy’s Catering Corner:

Did you know: Burrata cheese was developed to use the leftovers scraps from making Mozzarella cheese. Its outside is actually mozzarella, while the inside of the burrata round is shredded mozzarella and cream (or stracciatella) which gives it a rich buttery (and creamy) texture. Facts: Burrata is an indulgence not soon forgotten. Although it can be slightly higher in fat content due to the cream (stracciatella) center, it is a good source of protien and offers 35% of the daily intake of calcium. Nowadays it is easy to find in just about any market – Aldi’s and Publix carry it in plastic tubs. TODAY’S RECIPE: Burrata and Warm Tomatoes

1-2 large beefsteak or heirloom tomatoes 1-2 handfuls of your favorite croutons 1/4 cup good olive oil - Plus 3 - 4 tbsp of olive oil (for cooking) 2-3 garlic cloves sliced thinly 2 cups cherry tomatoes (assorted color is best) 1/3 cup water 1/4 cups pine nuts (optional) 2 teaspoons of dried parsley and oregano mixed 1 large round of Burrata A few fresh shredded basil leaves, for garnish Directions: Slice, fairly thinly, the beefsteaks and line a large plate or platter, season with salt & pepper to taste. Scatter the croutons, then drizzle the 1/4 cup olive oil. In a saute pan, add the 3-4 tbsp olive oil, the garlic slices and the cherry tomatoes. Cook over low/med heat (don’t burn the garlic) until tomatoes soften enough to smash, then add the water, pine nuts and herbs. Cook a couple minutes until heated through then pour over the beefsteak slices. Add the burrata on top and garnish with a drizzle of olive oil and shreds of fresh basil. Funny Thing Is… Taking a Trip Around the Circle of Life You know how everyone talks about how life comes full circle? Well, they’re right. In the beginning you babble a lot, dribble a lot, drop food all over yourself, take a half hour just to eat a little bowl of food, don’t realize you’re soiling your clothes and need an adult to take you for a walk. As you grow you figure out how to walk by yourself, the babbling gets diluted with an occasional word, the dribbling turns to nibbling, and you learn that the toilet is infinitely better than just letting go on the run and having to clean up later. As you enter adolescent life you still take a long time to eat but that’s because you’re busy whining about what’s on your plate if it isn’t ice cream or chocolate cake, but hey, at least you’ve mastered the fine art of getting food from the plate to your mouth. You also learn the value of language but seem to focus on that word “no” probably because you hear it every time you reach for something, and hallelujah, you no longer soil the inside of your clothes but find great delight in soiling the outside of your clothes. Then there’s that little matter of what happens when your school friends teach you the dark side of our language. When you try it at home you find your parents aren’t laughing like the kids in school and hey, why is your mother shoving that bar of soap in your mouth, (do they still do that?) Then comes the teen years. The language gets worse but since you can outrun mom you don’t have to deal with the soap anymore. Now you don’t have time to eat because the gang is waiting for you to help them set the land speed record since you just got your drivers license and you no longer need help from ANY adult because in your opinion you have achieved the full knowledge of the universe and you think all adults are idiots. As you enter your adult years you reverse EVERYTHING from your teen years by eating a lot more, driving a lot slower, and cleaning up that language except when on the highway. Then, when you enter your twilight years you’re back to babbling, dribbling, dropping food on yourself, soiling the inside of your clothes and needing an adult to take you for a walk. Don’t worry if your head is spinning. You’ve just made a trip around the circle of life. - Dr. Sammy -

Hurricane Preparedness: Riding Out The Hurricane...

When a hurricane is on the horizon, preparation is more than just a smart idea - it’s a necessity. Deciding to stay in your home means committing to being self-sufficient for several days or even weeks, depending on the severity of the storm and the aftermath. Power outages, limited access to supplies, and possible flooding are all real possibilities. The more you prepare now, the greater your chances of staying safe, comfortable, and in control during the storm. Use the checklist below to make sure you’re ready before the first winds arrive.

The Hurricane Ride-It-Out Checklist

This is not a complete list, but addressing the items below will help ensure you’re covered for a few days. With hurricanes, you have plenty of time to be prepared, so there are no excuses. Be ready ahead of time. Stay Informed: Monitor weather updates and warnings from reliable sources Emergency Plan: Have an evacuation plan just in case you decide to evacuate; include your family and friends Secure your home: Board up windows or install hurricane shutters; reinforce doors and garage doors Stock up on water: At least one gallon per person per day for a minimum of seven days Non-perishable food: Enough for at least a week; include easy-to-open canned goods, snacks, and special diet needs Manual can opener: In case the power goes out Medications and prescriptions: At least a two-week supply, plus copies of prescription information First-aid kit: Fully stocked and easily accessible Flashlights and batteries: Avoid candles; keep extra batteries for all devices Battery-powered or hand-crank radio: For weather updates and emergency alerts Fully charge electronics: Phones, portable chargers, and backup batteries are a great idea - available on Amazon Fill your car’s gas tank: In case of evacuation and also for use in generators Generator: Test it before the storm; store plenty of fuel in a safe place Cash on hand: ATMs and credit card systems may be down Important documents: Keep IDs, passports, insurance papers, and property records in a waterproof container Pet care supplies: Food, water, leashes, and medications Sanitation items: Toilet paper, moist towelettes, trash bags, and personal hygiene products Coolers and ice: For keeping food safe if the power goes out Plan for cooking: Propane for grills or camping stoves (outdoor use only) Emergency contacts: Make a written list in case your phone dies Insurance: Review your homeowner’s insurance policy to understand its coverage related to hurricanes Know your safe room or space: An interior room without windows, preferably on the lowest level Extra Clothes: Pack some extra clothes in a waterproof bag just in case Sleeping Items: A pillow and a blanket in a waterproof bag may come in handy Just In Case: Not a bad idea to write your name and address on your arm with a Sharpie - just in case... you know Important Phone Numbers To Keep On File 911 Emergency Services: This is the general emergency hotline that connects you to police, fire, and medical services. ABC Liquor Store: 321-269-1591 Brevard County Fire Rescue: 321-633-2056 Brevard County Sheriff’s Office: 321-264-5100 Brevard County Emergency Management: 321-637-6670

During the Storm: Staying Safe Indoors Once the winds pick up and the rain starts pounding, it’s time to hunker down and focus on safety. The priority is protecting yourself and those in your home until conditions are safe again.

During the Storm Safety Tips Stay inside and away from windows, glass doors, and skylights. Flying debris can break them at any time Use your safe room/space: an interior room, closet, or hallway with no windows Keep flashlights handy and use them instead of candles to avoid fire hazards Unplug electronics to protect them from power surges when electricity returns Monitor weather updates using a battery-powered or hand-crank radio Avoid using landlines during lightning to prevent electrical shock Do not go outside even if the wind stops suddenly - it may be the eye of the storm. Dangerous conditions can return quickly Keep pets indoors and secure Conserve phone battery: Use text messaging instead of calls when possible Stay calm and communicate: If you’re with family, keep everyone together and informed

Hurricane Prep for Pets

Animals often sense approaching storms before we do. Changes in barometric pressure, wind patterns, and even shifts in your behavior can cause pets to become anxious, restless, or clingy. During a hurricane, your pets rely entirely on you for safety and comfort. A little preparation now will help keep them calm, secure, and well cared for throughout the storm and in the days after. You may want to talk to your veterinarian: Ask about calming aids or prescription anxiety medication for pets that become extremely stressed during storms. Your vet can recommend safe options and the correct dosage.

Pet Preparedness Checklist Pet carrier or crate: Large enough for your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably Identification: Collar with up-to-date tags, microchip registered with current contact information Photograph of your pet: In case you are separated and need to prove ownership Food and water: At least a seven-day supply in sealed, waterproof containers Manual can opener: If using canned food Medications and medical records: Store in a waterproof bag; include instructions for any ongoing care Leash, harness, or pet seat belt: Keep them nearby for secure movement to safe areas Comfort items: Blanket, bed, or favorite toy to help reduce anxiety Sanitation supplies: Litter, litter box, waste bags, cleaning supplies, and paper towels Pet first-aid kit: Include bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any special items recommended by your vet Plan for emergencies: Know where pet-friendly shelters, boarding facilities, or friends/family homes are located in case you must leave your home

During the Storm with Pets Once the storm begins, your focus should be on keeping your pets secure, calm, and as comfortable as possible. Loud winds, rain, and pressure changes can frighten animals, sometimes causing them to hide or act out. Close off hiding spots where pets could get trapped or injured. Keeping them close and safe will help prevent accidents and ease their anxiety. Speak calmly and reassure them - your voice can help them relax. Offer comfort items - favorite toys, blankets, or treats. Do your best to stay together as much as you can. See the TGO Emergency Traffic Plan on page 57

Community Information CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules: • Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up. • Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag. • Place trash within one foot of the road so it’s within easy reach. • Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag. • Put trash out at the curb by 10:00am - Pick-up time varies within the park. • Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials. • Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals. • Also, be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility - 321-264-5009. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station 321-264-5048.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

64

Note to all residents... and visitors. Please don’t put your trash out to the curb too early - especially overnight. And if possible, place it in a covered trash bin. This time of year, with fewer people around the park, the local wildlife is working the night shift. Raccoons, opossums, armadillos, and other hungry critters consider an unattended trash bag an “all-you-can-eat buffet.” By morning, your neatly tied bag may have become dinner... with the leftovers scattered all over the neighborhood. A few extra minutes can help keep TGO looking beautiful for both the humans and the wildlife.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator. • Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes. • Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline. • Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes. • While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources. • Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve. NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next. TGO Has Eight AEDs Located at CSA buildings. 1.
