Dear TGO Community, The Annual Employee Golf Tournament was another great success, bringing together employees from across all departments for a day of friendly competition, teamwork, and camaraderie. I had the opportunity to greet each group on Hole 4 and hit a tee shot alongside the participants, adding a fun and memorable experience to the day. Players also enjoyed delicious chicken sandwiches and sloppy joes prepared by Aaron and Chris from the Blue Heron, whose outstanding food helped make the event even more enjoyable.

Congratulations to Roger Nicol, Niles Jansen, George Mattocks, and Bob Bullard on winning this year’s Employee Golf Tournament!

A special shout-out goes to Carolyn Banke, TGO’s HR Manager, for her outstanding work organizing the event and capturing the many photos that helped preserve the memories of a fantastic day. Be sure to check out page 16 for event photos.

Thank you to everyone who participated and to all those who helped organize and support another outstanding employee tournament.

We look forward to continuing this tradition for years to come.

The wait is over! We are excited to announce that Doggie World will officially reopen on Friday, August 7, at 8:00am. Our furry friends will be enjoying a brand-new surface featuring premium Bimini Bermuda grass, the same championship quality turf used during our recent golf course renovation. Known for its rich, deep green color, exceptional durability, and fast recovery, this premium sod will provide a beautiful, resilient play area that can stand up to plenty of running, chasing, and tail wagging.

To keep Doggie World looking and performing its best, the park will be closed every Tuesday from 7:00-9:00am for routine maintenance and specialized turf treatments. These scheduled closures will help ensure the grass remains healthy, safe, and ready for year-round fun.

A huge thank you to everyone for your patience when we completed this exciting improvement. We can’t wait to see our residents and their four-legged family members back at Doggie World enjoying this fantastic new space.

Also, as a reminder, there is the Stars & Stripes Pool Party happening tomorrow, Saturday, August 8 at our manor pool from 4 to 7:00pm. There will be games, a raffle, food and drink specials offered by the Blue Heron, plus a DJ spinning the tunes. This will be a great way to beat the heat and socialize with your TGO friends and neighbors.

The Four Finger Method: Finding the Right Balance Golf is a game of balance. You want to play aggressively enough to score, but conservatively enough to avoid big numbers.

The challenge is knowing where that line is.

Many golfers are either too aggressive or too conservative. The overly aggressive player aims directly at every flag and challenges every hazard. The overly conservative player aims so far away from trouble that they never give themselves a realistic opportunity to score.

A simple way to find the middle ground is the Four Finger Method.

Before a shot, extend your arm and hold up four fingers. Use those four fingers as a measuring tool between your target and the nearest trouble.

If a bunker guards the right side of the green, don’t aim at the edge of the bunker. Move your target at least four finger widths to the left. If water is on the left, move your target four finger widths to the right.

Here’s the key: If your target is less than four finger widths from trouble, you’re probably being too aggressive. If it’s significantly more than four finger widths away, you’re probably being too conservative.

The Four Finger Method gives you enough room for your normal shot pattern while still allowing you to play offense. You’re not aiming away from the target. You’re simply choosing a target that accounts for the fact that golf shots don’t always fly exactly where intended.

The best players don’t try to hit perfect shots. They choose targets that allow for imperfect ones.

The next time you’re deciding where to aim, ask yourself: Am I being too aggressive? Am I being too conservative?

Then hold up four fingers and find the balance between the two.

The water’s edge lines up with my right pinky, while my target is the left edge of my index finger. This gives me room to miss, allowing me to make a confident, committed swing.

Ray Czyzewski Employee Number One:

Meet the Friendly Face at Golf Carts Unlimited If you’ve stopped by Golf Carts Unlimited at The Great Outdoors, chances are you’ve met Ray Czyzewski.

Whether he’s helping customers find the right golf cart, checking tire pressure, topping off battery water, or simply sharing a laugh, Ray has become a familiar and welcome face around the park.

Ask Ray what his official job title is and you’ll probably get a grin before he answers. “Employee Number One,” he says with a smile.

The title fits his personality perfectly. After more than nine years with Golf Carts Unlimited, Ray has learned that no job is too small. If something needs to be done, he’ll do it.

“I do whatever it takes,” he says. “That’s just part of the job.”

Originally from New Jersey, Ray was born and raised there before joining the United States Marine Corps shortly after graduating from high school. After completing his military service, he returned to New Jersey and eventually went to work for a stained-glass company.

His move to Florida is one he’ll never forget. “I moved here on Monday, September 10, 2001,” Ray recalls. “The very next day was September 11.”

The company transferred him to Florida, where he continued working in the stained-glass business. Ironically, he didn’t begin as a salesman. His first assignment was in the warehouse, moving heavy boxes of lead, solder, and glass.

One day the company owner’s father questioned why someone with Ray’s personality was working behind the scenes instead of meeting customers.

That simple conversation changed his career. Before long, Ray was on the sales floor, where he discovered he genuinely enjoyed working with people. Those customerservice skills would eventually serve him well when Golf Carts Unlimited came calling.

After leaving the stained-glass industry, Ray took a little time off, enjoyed a memorable trip to Key West with his wife, and began looking for his next opportunity. His son helped him create his very first résumé and posted it online.

It didn’t stay there long.

Within minutes, Golf Carts Unlimited contacted him to schedule an interview. Ray still laughs about showing up wearing his best business suit, only to meet his future manager dressed in flip-flops, a T-shirt, and sporting long hair and a beard.

“We were complete opposites,” Ray says. “But we hit it off immediately.”

That first meeting led to a career that has now lasted nearly a decade.

Ray and his wife have been married throughout the entire journey and are the proud parents of two sons and grandparents to five grandchildren. Today they live on Merritt Island, a location that gives Ray an easy commute whether he’s working at the Viera store or spending time helping customers at The Great Outdoors. And helping people is exactly what he enjoys most.

Ray describes the TGO location as one of Golf Carts Unlimited’s “best-kept secrets.” He enjoys getting to know residents and appreciates the friendly atmosphere that makes each day a little different.

If you stop by the shop, don’t be surprised if Ray offers to check the air in your tires or the water level in your golf cart batteries. There’s no charge.

It’s simply another example of the customer service that has made “Employee Number One” one of the most appreciated people at Golf Carts Unlimited.

Remembering...

Ed Brown

Some people spend their lives chasing titles or recognition. Ed Brown spent his life solving problems, helping others, and quietly making the world a better place. Whether he was rescuing someone in danger, mentoring young firefighters, protecting Florida’s waterways, or volunteering here at The Great Outdoors, Ed never stopped looking for ways to serve.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised on Long Island, Ed developed an adventurous spirit at an early age. After graduating from Hofstra University with a degree in biology, he served in the U.S. Army Special Forces, where his interest in rescue diving and emergency response began to take shape. It was during this time that he married the love of his life, Diane, beginning a partnership that would last more than six decades.

In 1968, Ed joined Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and embarked on what would become one of the most distinguished careers in the department’s history. While many people knew him simply as a firefighter, those who worked beside him knew he was much more. Ed was a visionary who helped pioneer specialized rescue programs that are still in use today. He played a key role in developing Miami-Dade’s water rescue, marine firefighting, air rescue, firefighter physical fitness, and lifeguard programs. He was also among the department’s very first paramedics.

Despite being encouraged to pursue promotions, Ed consistently chose a different path. He preferred working directly with the people and programs he loved rather than sitting behind a desk. His greatest satisfaction came from building teams, training others, and creating systems that would continue helping people long after he was gone.

That dedication earned him numerous honors throughout his career, including being named Florida Firefighter of the Year in 1996 and receiving a prestigious national training achievement award from Fire Engineering magazine. Yet those closest to him knew the awards meant far less to Ed than the opportunity to make a difference.

One story perfectly captured his character. While dating Diane in college, Ed arrived late for dinner at her parents’ home with his hands covered in blood. Alarmed, everyone asked what had happened. On his way there, he had stopped at a serious automobile accident to help the injured until emergency crews arrived. That wasn’t an extraordinary event for Ed - it was simply who he was. Throughout his life, he carried medical supplies in his vehicle and never drove past someone in need.

His passion for helping others extended well beyond emergency scenes. Long before water rescue became common, Ed began training volunteer divers in the family’s backyard swimming pool. He personally

instructed many of the firefighters who would eventually become members of Miami-Dade’s rescue diving team. Those volunteers later became professionals, and countless firefighters throughout Florida credit Ed as one of their earliest mentors. Even near the end of his life, former students and colleagues continued visiting him, thanking him for the guidance and encouragement that shaped their careers.

Outside the fire service, Ed’s interests were as varied as they were impressive. He was an accomplished scuba instructor, an avid boater and paddler, a talented artist, a classic car enthusiast who restored his beloved 1956 Austin-Healey, and a lifelong student of World War II history. His home was filled with books on military aircraft and submarines, along with artifacts collected during years of diving adventures.

Nature was another lifelong passion. Ed became a Florida Master Naturalist and was fascinated by birds, wildlife, and Florida’s unique ecosystems. He enjoyed relocating injured animals, studying nature, and sharing that knowledge with anyone who was interested.

When Ed and Diane discovered The Great Outdoors, they knew they had found home. Drawn initially by TGO’s reputation as one of the country’s premier RV resorts, they soon became deeply involved in community life. Ed served as president of the Nature Center, helped expand the community fitness center, became a driving force behind the Firewise USA program, and wrote many educational articles for The Happenings.

Retirement simply gave him more opportunities to serve.

Those who knew Ed will remember his intelligence, determination, and quiet confidence. He was never interested in personal recognition. Instead, he focused on finding the next problem that needed solving and the next person who could benefit from his knowledge. He inspired others not through speeches, but through example.

Ed Brown leaves behind far more than an impressive résumé. He leaves behind safer communities, stronger emergency rescue programs, better-trained firefighters, a more informed TGO community, and countless friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness and generosity.

He will be deeply missed by Diane, his family, and everyone fortunate enough to have known him. His legacy lives on not only in the many awards that recognized his accomplishments, but more importantly in the people he mentored, the programs he created, and the lives he helped save.

Doggie World has recived a complete lawn makeover. Our TGO crew resurfaced the ground and installed all new sod - plus they cleaned up the general area. Fido should be happy now!

TGO Easy To See Trip

Scobie Park A Titusville Hidden Gem

At the very end of Main Street in downtown Titusville, tucked quietly beside the Titusville Towers assisted living facility, sits one of the city’s most overlooked waterfront locations - Scobie Park. Most longtime residents have probably driven past it without giving it much thought. In fact, many people living in Titusville today likely do not even realize the park exists. It is truly one of those “blink and you miss it” places. But hidden behind its small size and quiet appearance is a fascinating piece of Titusville history.

Scobie Park is named after George Scobie, an entrepreneur who arrived in the area during the late 1800s and founded the Scobie Fish and Oyster Company in 1885. Long before Titusville became associated with rockets and the Space Coast, it was a hardworking fishing village tied closely to the Indian River Lagoon. The arrival of the railroad transformed the local economy, allowing seafood and other goods to be transported quickly throughout Florida and beyond.

For a time, Titusville became an important commercial fishing hub for the region. Extending from the end of Main City dock and Indian River looking east.

Street nearly 1,500 feet out into the Indian River Lagoon was the historic Titusville City Dock at what was known as “Mullet Row.” The dock became a center of activity where fishing companies operated alongside ferry services carrying passengers and supplies across the river. For more than four decades, this waterfront area played a major role in the city’s economy and daily life.

Everything changed in 1926 when the Great Nassau Hurricane swept through the area. Winds approaching 75 miles per hour tore apart the massive dock and destroyed the warehouses that lined it. By that point, transportation across the river had already begun shifting away from ferries thanks to the construction of the Walker Bridge in 1921 - located at the present-day site of the Max Brewer Bridge. With the bridge replacing the need for regular ferry service, the damaged city dock was never rebuilt, and an important chapter of Titusville’s waterfront history slowly faded away.

Today, Scobie Park feels far removed from the bustling commercial center it once was. Instead of fishing warehouses and ferry traffic, visitors The Lorillard Boat Company was a familiar sight on Titusville’s historic waterfront, where boats were now find a small peaceful waterfront park overlooking the Indian River built and repaired during the early 1900s Lagoon. The location offers beautiful sunrise views, frequent sightings of dolphins, pelicans, herons, and occasionally manatees, along with an excellent vantage point for rocket launches from across the water.

In recent years, the park has also become part of Titusville’s growing environmental restoration efforts. Local and federal projects aimed at improving the health of the Indian River Lagoon are focusing on shoreline stabilization, erosion control, stormwater filtration, and native habitat restoration in and around the park. The goal is to help improve water quality while protecting one of the region’s most important natural resources for future generations.

Scobie Park may be small and easy to overlook, but its story is deeply connected to the history of Titusville itself. From booming fishing docks and ferry crossings to environmental restoration and peaceful lagoon views, this little waterfront park quietly holds more history than most people realize.

When the Water Rises

We have all heard a “Flash Flood Watch” or a “Flash Flood Warning,” but what do they actually mean and what should you do upon hearing either of these warnings. To better understand what these are, let us look at what flooding actually means.

Most of us remember the flooding from Hurricane Helene in September 2025 and the Mystic Campground flooding in July 2025 killing 28 people, including 27 young girls. Both of these tragedies occurred when dramatically heavy rain dumped extraordinary amounts of rain in a short amount of time. We experienced a miniature flooding here in October 2025 when a storm dropped over 15” inches of rain here. Streets were flooded as storm drains became overwhelmed. This was but an example of what could happen.

There are several steps in the National Weather Service’s early warning system. It is important to realize that this is a system of progressive, more important, and critical warnings of a potential disaster coming.

The first step is a Flood Advisory: Be Aware. This is issued when a specific weather event is forecast to occur which may become a nuisance. This is issued when the flooding is not expected to be severe enough to issue a warning. Caution should be used and one must realize that it could escalate into a serious or life threatening event.

Step two is a Flood Watch. Be Prepared. When conditions are favorable for a specific hazardous weather event to occur a Flood Watch will be issued. This means that conditions are favorable but no mean flooding has occurred but could.

The next step is the Flood Warning: Take Action. A Flood Warning is issued when a hazardous weather event is imminent or is already happening. This means flooding is imminent or occurring.

The last step is a Flash Flood Warning. These are issued when a flash flood is imminent or actually happening. You may be in an area that has not received any rain. A flash flood is a sudden violent flood that can take minutes or hours to develop. If you are in a flood prone area, move to higher ground immediately.

As we have said, flooding can occur even if there is no rain present. The ground water table can raise and cause water to enter homes and create standing water in yards and streets.

Once the ground has absorbed all that it can, water will begin to puddle, and standing water areas will develop. If these are not near any natural or manmade drainage, flooding can occur.

We have 38 lakes and ponds in TGO. They can fill and overflow, emptying into the areas around them.

Here are a few tips for dealing with high water.

1. Even a good drainage plan can be overwhelmed, as we have seen.

2. Do not drive a vehicle through standing or moving water: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown!”

3. If your vehicle stalls out: a. Do not try to restart it. It will most likely not start and may hydrolock the engine. Hydrolock is when an internal combustion engine ingests water into the cylinders which, if the engine is started, will destroy it. b. Get out and carefully walk back the way you drove in. Any stick or pole will help your stability. c. Keeping a whistle in your vehicle will be handy for signaling for help. Three distinct blasts is the signal for “Help Me.” d. Do not leave valuables in the vehicle. e. Remember where you abandoned the vehicle, find a landmark or two. Things could look different later. f. Look for higher ground or a dry structure. g. Remember your home. Could it flood, has it ever flooded? Do you have flood insurance? h. Follow the progress of the storm, prepare early.

Being prepared is always the best and safest way to limit damage, injuries and survive high water.

Johnny Danger Live

Johnny Danger has spent a lifetime entertaining audiences around the world. His real name is Tim Boyd, born in Toronto, Canada. His musical journey has taken him from opening for major recording artists and performing aboard cruise ships for more than a decade to becoming one of the Space Coast’s favorite entertainers. Today, his high-energy show, Johnny Danger Live, is a regular attraction at the Blue Heron, where his humor, audience interaction, and rock-and-roll style have earned him a loyal following. We recently sat down with Johnny to learn more about the man behind the guitar, and the remarkable journey that brought him here.

Okay Johnny, you’re well know as a regular entertainer here at the Blue Heron, but let’s find out a little more about you. Start at the beginning - where were you born and raised?

I was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. My parents were immigrants from Britain. They both went through World War II as children, and afterward there just wasn’t much left there. My dad served in the Navy before moving to Canada, where he met my mom. My oldest brother was actually born in England before the family came over. Dad spent 47 years working as an elevator mechanic... so Toronto is where I grew up.

When did music first become part of your life?

I was one of those kids who was always singing. Music was everywhere in our house. My mom played piano, my dad played guitar, one brother was an accomplished classical guitarist, and another was a classical pianist.

At first, though, I was convinced I was going to play center ice for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Then I looked in the mirror and realized I probably wasn’t built for the NHL. Around age 13, I picked up one of my dad’s guitars that was hanging around the house, learned my first song, and that was it. I was hooked.

During the winter I played hockey whenever we could afford it. Money was tight, so I missed a few seasons, but sports were a huge part of my childhood.

We know at one point in your life, you were performing on cruise ships. Tell us about that.

Eventually, once I became a full-time musician, I realized I couldn’t really make a living in Canada because everything shuts down for six to eight months during the winter. Then I got an offer to move to Miami and perform on a cruise ship.

I took it... and I basically never went home.

I was offered a job with Royal Caribbean, and the band, Johnny Danger, became the house band aboard the Majesty of the Seas. When the guy who hired me sent a picture of the ship, I honestly thought he was joking. I looked at the photo and thought, “There’s no way we’re actually playing on something that big.”

Then I arrived in Miami... and there it was. It was definitely a culture shock.

What was your first day on board like?

I’ll never forget it. The cruise director called me into his office and asked one question: “Tell me you know how to play rock and roll.”

So you were involved in sports growing up?

I said, “That’s our specialty.” He practically sighed with Absolutely. I played competitive soccer, representing my relief. The previous band apparently couldn’t speak English hometown against other communities. My dad had been and only played Latin music, but the ship had a full-blown a semi-professional footballer in England, so he definitely Rock ‘n’ Roll Night. He said, “We’re going to get along fine.”

Then, just before I left, he casually added, “I’ll see you wanted a son who loved soccer. It took him three tries, but he finally got one! tonight at the show.” I thought he meant I was coming to

Were you with one cruise line all this time?

No. I started with Royal Caribbean, then moved to Princess Cruises, and eventually Disney Cruises. Disney is actually what brought me to Port Canaveral.

By then I’d married a cruise director, which, by the way, was a pretty nice upgrade to my living arrangements onboard!

With all that traveling, what were some of the most memorable places you visited?

One of the highlights was doing a world cruise that started and ended in Athens. That trip took me just about everywhere.

I rode camels near the Great Pyramids of Giza, visited Easter Island, Australia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, South America, and even saw penguins.

One of the most amazing experiences was Tim - or Johnny, is one of the BH’s crowd favorites. It’s an incredible opportunity because they get to experience London’s West End, which is right up there with Broadway.

Our other daughter is spending the summer performing professionally in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She landed the lead in A Chorus Line and will also be appearing in Gypsy and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

She’s getting paid to sing and dance all summer, which is pretty amazing for a young performer.

Kara is still working as a cruise director?

She is. In fact, she’s out at sea right now.

Her schedule is ten weeks onboard and ten weeks at home, so it’s actually pretty predictable. How many songs do you think you know?

That’s a scary question. I’ve probably learned somewhere around 1,500 songs over the years - maybe even more.

A typical night’s show is around 40 to 45 songs, so it adds up over time. And that’s not even counting the songs I’ve written myself.

When someone requests a song, how do you remember all the lyrics?

Sometimes it’s just muscle memory. Other times I just need the first line or even the first word, and suddenly the whole song comes flooding back.

It’s funny how the brain works. There are songs I’ve tried over and over to learn that just never stick.

Johnny Danger has been the choice of entertainment for the annual Coach Club Block Party since its beginning, five years ago.

Besides guitar, what other instruments do you play?

I play piano, bass guitar, and trumpet. Trumpet was actually my high school instrument, and that’s where I really learned music theory. It made me understand how music is put together. It’s almost like advanced math. Writing music takes that to another level entirely.

These days I usually describe myself as an entertainer who happens to play guitar. That’s really what I do.

After learning more than 1,500 songs, what advice would you give someone who wants to learn music?

Don’t worry so much about talent. Music is a lot like sports.

It’s about putting in the time.

People think they have to become famous or be the next Steve Perry before they even begin. That’s the wrong approach.

You don’t start playing golf because you think you’re going to make the PGA Tour. You do it because you enjoy playing golf. Music should be the same way.

Anyone who can talk can learn to sing. Maybe not every style, but everybody has a voice. People judge themselves way too quickly.

I always use baseball as an example. The first time a kid faces a curveball, he probably strikes out. He doesn’t walk back to the dugout saying, “I guess I have no talent. I’ll never play baseball again.”

He thinks, “That was hard. I’m going to keep practicing until I hit it.” That’s exactly how music works.

Start small. Learn a simple two-chord song like “A Horse With No Name.” Get comfortable with that. Then learn another one. If you discover you have the passion, there’s no telling where it might take you.

Any final thoughts for everyone here at The Great Outdoors?

I just want to say thank you.

Everyone here has been incredibly welcoming, not just to me, but to my family. I’ve made lifelong friends here, people like Craig Ryan and so many others who have invited me into their homes, had me play birthday parties and special events, and simply made me feel like part of the community.

I’ve performed in a lot of places over the years, and every venue is different. Sometimes you’re treated like you’re just another employee, and that’s perfectly fine. But The Great Outdoors is different.

People come up to say hello. They tell me they enjoy the music. They genuinely make me feel appreciated, and that’s something I’ll never take for granted.

In fact, I’d move here tomorrow... I’m just afraid I’d never want to leave.

Jenny Townsend - Blue Heron’s Server

For nearly two decades, Jenny Townsend became a familiar face to diners throughout Titusville while working at Shiloh’s and Paul’s Smokehouse. Now, she’s bringing that same friendly personality and years of experience to the Blue Heron, where she has quickly become a favorite among residents.

Jenny joined the Blue Heron in January after spending 17 years at Shiloh’s and Paul’s Smokehouse. As both a server and bartender, she learned that great service is about much more than taking orders - it’s about getting to know people and making them feel welcome. Those relationships are one of the reasons she has enjoyed such a long career in the restaurant business.

Originally from Massachusetts, Jenny moved to Titusville in 1978 and has called the area home ever since. She fondly remembers spending summers at the beach while growing up and visiting the old Paragon Park amusement park. Even today, the beach remains one of her favorite places to relax.

When she’s away from work, family is at the center of her life. Jenny has three children and four grandsons. Whether she’s spending time at the beach or swimming in the pool with her grandsons, those moments are what she treasures most.

Over the years, Jenny has enjoyed a variety of hobbies. She bowled in a league at River Lanes for several years and even spent some time playing poker, although she laughs that those days are behind her now. Every summer for the past six years, she has also made it a tradition to return to Massachusetts for a couple of weeks to visit longtime friends and enjoy the cooler weather.

For Jenny Townsend, good food may bring people through the door, but friendly service and genuine conversation are what keep them coming back. “I love working here,” she said with a smile. “People ask if I’d ever go back to another restaurant, and I tell them, ‘No.’ I really like it here.”

The Addison Canal

An Ambitious Dream that Left a Lasting Legacy Many residents of North Brevard drive across the Addison Canal every day without giving it much thought.

Others know it as the waterway that passes through The Great Outdoors, behind the Blue Heron Water Reclamation Facility, or alongside the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary. What few people realize is that the canal was once part of one of the most ambitious development projects ever attempted in Brevard County. Had the project succeeded, the landscape west of Titusville might look dramatically different today.

The story begins in 1911, when Florida was experiencing a tremendous land boom. Investors believed that thousands of acres of marshland in the St. Johns River Valley could be transformed into productive farmland through drainage projects. Across Florida, canals were being dug to reclaim wetlands for agriculture, and Brevard County was no exception.

A group of investors led by Edgar W. Ellis and J. H. Beckwith formed the Titusville Fruit and Farm Lands Company. The company purchased approximately 22,500 acres in the western portion of the historic Delespine Grant with an ambitious vision. Their goal was to drain large sections of marshland, reduce flooding, create fertile agricultural fields, and provide a transportation route for crops to market.

Before work even began on the main canal, crews excavated an impressive network of nearly 43 miles of smaller lateral canals that would feed water into the primary channel. By 1912 and 1913, work was underway on what became known as the Addison Canal, although many historic records also refer to it as the Ellis Canal, reflecting its connection to Edgar Ellis.

The proposed canal stretched eastward from the marshes near the St. Johns River toward Addison Creek and eventually the Indian River Lagoon at Addison Point. Besides draining farmland, the canal was intended to serve as a transportation corridor where boats could carry vegetables, supplies, and equipment between the agricultural fields and the Indian River. Some historians have suggested another possible objective – helping divert floodwaters away from the St. Johns River basin – but the primary purpose remained agricultural development.

Construction crews made remarkable progress considering the equipment available more than a century ago.

They successfully excavated through miles of sandy soils and marshland, creating the broad canal that can still be seen today. Local stories even suggest that some of the machinery may have originated from equipment once intended for work on the Panama Canal, although that claim has never been conclusively documented.

Everything changed when the workers reached the scrub and coquina ridge within what is now the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary.

Unlike the loose soils they had been digging, this ridge consisted of extremely hard coquina rock running north and south across the landscape. Excavating through it proved far more difficult than anticipated. Equipment frequently broke down, progress slowed dramatically, and costs mounted. The developers refinanced the project once, but eventually ran out of money before the canal could be completed.

The canal simply stopped.

Instead of reaching the Indian River Lagoon, construction ended just east of the coquina ridge. Without a completed waterway, the grand vision of transforming thousands of acres into productive farmland collapsed, and the Titusville Fruit and Farm Lands Company eventually failed financially.

Even though the canal never fulfilled its original purpose, it continued to influence the landscape. Large piles of spoil excavated from the canal remained for decades. During the 1940s, much of this material was reportedly used as fill during construction of the Naval Air Station that later became Space Coast Regional Airport.

The canal itself also altered the area’s natural hydrology.

Before construction, much of the water west of the coquina ridge naturally flowed toward the St. Johns River. The canal changed those drainage patterns, creating a man-made watercourse that still influences water movement more than 100 years later.

Today, portions of the canal remain surprisingly visible. It passes through or near several familiar Titusville landmarks, including The Great Outdoors, (near the Nature Center) the Blue Heron Water Reclamation Facility, Windover Farms, Interstate 95, and the Enchanted Forest Nature Sanctuary before reaching Addison Creek. Visitors hiking the Enchanted

Forest trails can still observe the impressive excavation through the coquina ridge, providing a remarkable glimpse into one of Brevard County’s forgotten engineering projects.

Modern residents may know the Addison Canal for a completely different reason. The City of Titusville’s Blue Heron Water Reclamation Wetlands discharge highly treated reclaimed water into the canal. After flowing through a series of engineered wetland treatment cells, the water enters the Addison Canal, which ultimately drains toward the St. Johns River watershed. The wetland system uses natural aquatic plants to remove nutrients before the water is released, making the canal an important part of the city’s modern water management infrastructure.

The canal has also become a valuable environmental resource.

Fish, turtles, wading birds, otters, and numerous other species utilize portions of the waterway, while nearby wetlands provide habitat for countless native plants and animals. Ironically, a project originally intended to eliminate wetlands has become intertwined with some of North Brevard’s most treasured natural areas.

Recognizing its historical importance, Brevard County installed a historical marker at the Enchanted Forest Nature Sanctuary describing the Addison/Ellis Canal and its role in early twentieth-century development efforts. The marker serves as a reminder that many of Florida’s modern communities were shaped not only by successful projects but also by ambitious dreams that never reached completion.

Today, the Addison Canal quietly carries water instead of farm barges. It no longer represents an unfinished business venture but rather a fascinating chapter in Titusville’s history—a story of optimism, engineering, perseverance, and the challenges of trying to reshape Florida’s unique landscape. More than a century after the first shovel entered the ground, the canal remains one of Brevard County’s most interesting hidden landmarks, reminding us that even unfinished projects can leave a lasting mark on the communities they were meant to transform.

1 – 8 oz. package of cream cheese, softened 1 – 8 oz. container of cool whip ¼ cup brown sugar 4 regular sized Snickers bars, chopped into small pieces.

Directions: Mix the cream cheese, cool whip and brown sugar together until thoroughly incorporated. Fold in all the Snickers bits and pieces. Refrigerate until you are ready to serve. This dip is great served with strawberries, pretzels, vanilla wafers, and graham crackers.

Funny Thing Is… It’s Hearing, Not Herring The older I get the less I seem to understand. The other day a friend asked if I finished my taxes and I said “Yes, I think there are a lot of Finnish in Texas.” Also, sometimes when I’m singing I think people are saying “You Rock” when they may actually be saying “You Stink.” I just smile and say thank you and they think maybe I was trying to stink.

So Wednesday, I ran into an old friend I hadn’t seen in years. I asked him how his wife was and he said “doing fine.” I heard “Doing time.” “Wow, what did she do?” He just laughed and shook his head. I really have trouble in a crowded room or restaurant when there are a lot of people talking. Trying not to be rude a lot of times I just put my head on automatic nod and throw in an occasional “yeah” even though I may not be hearing a word my acquaintance is saying. That really got me into trouble when a female friend was telling me she thinks she’s gaining too much weight. Not a good time to have the head on automatic nod and say “yeah.” I’m gonna miss her.

This is giving me a totally new perspective on texting. Now that my hearing is getting worse I find that I get in a lot less trouble if I read what someone is saying to me. Of course that presents a whole new set of issues to deal with.

Can’t read texts without my reading glasses. Can’t drive with reading glasses on so what do I do when I get a text while driving. This only happens EVERY TIME I get in the car to go somewhere. But what if someone needs my help? I gotta read it right now. Bad idea. Doing this taught me there are other ways to communicate instead of talking or texting.

The middle finger from the other driver who I just cut off while reading that text sent me a very clear message. I found out my phone has hands free texting. Except Siri seems to understand what I’m saying slightly less than a tourist from Belgium who doesn’t speak English. “Hey Siri. Write an end to this column.” Text from Siri says “Send a condom.” I think -Sammy I’m done. “You’re not dumb.” Sigh!

A Minute with Meghan… Florida’s Heat has a Dark Side Can we all agree that the recent weather has been pretty crazy?!

From afternoon storms that leave trees and vegetation debris scattered throughout our community to heat indices approaching 120°F, these last few weeks have been more than just “typical Florida weather.” These bright, sunny, summer days may have us dreaming of fun in the sun, but they can also have a dark side if we’re not careful… and I’m not talking about thunderstorms.

Heat-related illnesses (HRIs) can be very serious, and it’s extremely important to know how to recognize the symptoms.

Just one county over, Seminole County fire departments responded to 29 heat-related illness calls just between June 1 and June 22, 2026, which is an average of more than 1 incident per day! Ten children nationwide have already died this year after being left in hot cars, and four of those deaths occurred in Florida alone. Even pets are affected by heat-related illnesses. In 2026 alone, 55 heat-related pet deaths have already been recorded in the U.S., six of them in Florida.

Heat-related illnesses exist on a spectrum of not-so-serious to significant and life-threatening. When symptoms begin, they compound rapidly, and before you know it, you’re experiencing an emergency. The spectrum of HRIs includes:

you sweat so much, your body is losing salts and fluids.

• Heat Exhaustion: Occurs when your body can’t cool itself through sweating. If left untreated, it can easily progress to heat stroke.

• Heat Stroke: This is the most severe HRI. During heat stroke, your body temperature climbs quickly to dangerous levels, and you often stop sweating.

Normal core body temperature averages around 98.6°F, although it can vary slightly from person to person, and as this temperature rises, your body sweats to naturally cool itself down. As sweat evaporates from your skin, it helps protect you from overheating by cooling the blood near the surface of your skin before it returns to your body’s core, helping to regulate your internal temperature. Where the danger lies is when the relative humidity is high, which diminishes the body’s ability to cool itself, preventing the sweat on your skin to easily evaporate since there is too much moisture in the air.

Being able to recognize symptoms as they progress can ensure that treatment is sought prior to becoming a life-threatening emergency. Younger children and older adults are more vulnerable to HRIs, as are those that work or exercise outside, and those that become dehydrated. I used to have a coach that would say, “hydration starts the day before,” which is true! If you’re thirsty, you’re already behind the eight ball, because that’s your body’s way of telling you you’re already becoming dehydrated. So, what are the signs to look for with heat exhaustion vs. heat stroke?

These past few weeks we’ve had heat indices nearing 115°F, warnings about staying indoors during the peak of the day, and even reports of people’s shoes melting on the asphalt. But heat indices only take into account the ambient temperature and the humidity in shady areas, and not heat from the sun, which can also add to the heat stress on our body. Here in the state of Florida, we have the “Zachary Martin Act,” which was enacted in 2020, after the death of a high school football player, when he • Heat Rash (aka prickly heat): A red, stinging rash develops suffered a heat stroke. The law focused on developing a when you’re hot and sweaty, and typically shows up in areas better understanding of heat stress, which they defined where sweat gets trapped, like in your elbows, behind your as measuring “the ambient temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle, and cloud cover at the site of athletic knees, or in your groin.

• Heat Cramps: Painful muscle cramps, especially when ex- activities.” They called this measurement the Wet Bulb ercising or being active in the heat. They develop because Globe Temperature (WBGT). A study in 2022 indicated

that sweat evaporation will not occur at temperatures as low as 87°F with 100% relative humidity even for young, healthy individuals, stating “Young, fit, healthy people tend to tolerate heat better… [but] our results suggests that in humid parts of the world, we start to get concernedeven about young, healthy peoplewhen it’s above ~87.8°F wet-bulb temperature.” The concept of WBGT has been adopted by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association as part of its heat safety guidelines for athletes, but every individual should take this into consideration, especially those who are physically active or work outdoors.

Now, knowing all of this, how can we keep ourselves safe on days when we experience extreme heat and humidity?

A few tips to avoid heat-related illnesses include: • Drink up! Make sure to drink plenty of fluids (preferably water), but also make sure you’re replenishing electrolytes (aka sodium and potassium) that you lose due to sweating.

Remember… if you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated!

• Take five… or ten. If you’re starting to feel weak or tired, take a break. Sit down in the shade. If possible, avoid intense exercising or long stretches of activity (including work) and take frequent breaks.

• Chill out. If you start to notice signs of heat exhaustion, get cool ASAP! Ideally you can go indoors with the air conditioning, but if not, find a cool shady place to sit and rest. Take small sips of cool (not ice cold) water, and wrap a wet towel or cloth around your neck. Cooling the carotid arteries, on the sides of your neck, can help lower the temperature of blood flowing to the brain more quickly. (While it may feel good on your forehead, your skull is too thick to allow for effective blood cooling.)

• Pay attention! People don’t always recognize the signs of heat illness in themselves. So, if you notice symptoms in others, help them get to a cool, shady place. If symptoms get worse, seek medical attention.

The good news is that most heat-related illnesses are preventable. Stay hydrated throughout the day, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the afternoon whenever possible.

Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle—not even for a few minutes—and remember to check on neighbors, friends, and family members who may be more vulnerable to the heat. Florida summers are part of what makes living here so enjoyable, but they also demand respect. By recognizing the warning signs early, understanding your personal risk, and taking simple precautions, you can continue to enjoy everything summer has to offer while keeping yourself and those around you safe.

No approval will be given without having all the required data available at the ARC Meeting for review.

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) will provide owners with a clear understanding of what is allowed and when ARC approval is needed. Gaining ARC approval is facilitated through a responsive process that is easy to use.

The ARC Guidelines and Application Form are available for download at TGOCSA.org or you can also pick up an application in the CSA Office Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 8:00am until 5:00pm.

Applications must be submitted to the CSA Office by 12:00 Noon on the Wednesday prior to the following Wednesday meeting date to be considered at that meeting.

The ARC is elected by property owners. ARC has eleven members, ten elected from representative districts and one elected by the whole membership to serve as chairman. Each ARC term is two years.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules: • Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed.

Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

• Also, be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility - 321-264-5009. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station 321-264-5048.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Note to all residents... and visitors. Please don’t put your trash out to the curb too early - especially overnight. And if possible, place it in a covered trash bin.

This time of year, with fewer people around the park, the local wildlife is working the night shift. Raccoons, opossums, armadillos, and other hungry critters consider an unattended trash bag an “all-you-can-eat buffet.” By morning, your neatly tied bag may have become dinner... with the leftovers scattered all over the neighborhood.

A few extra minutes can help keep TGO looking beautiful for both the humans and the wildlife.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

The CSA has a contract with Spectrum that includes Spectrum TV Select and Spectrum Internet services. If you are experiencing problems with their service or need to set up a new service, call the number above. Tell them your community at The Great Outdoors has a bulk agreement known as the Bronze Package.

TGO Community Channel 732 Our television channel of the Community Services Association will be active for broadcasting board meetings. Your TV must be equipped with a Spectrum TV cable box or digital adapter.

Turf Masters regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, a granular nitrogen fertilizer and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects.

Turf Masters is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the Turf Masters list.

Application dates are scheduled for Sept 8, 9 & 10 Service Calls - July 23, August 6 & 20 Turf Masters advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
