Dear TGO Community, It looks like all the rain dances have finally paid off! Since the last issue of The Happenings we have received some much-needed rainfall here at The Great Outdoors. While we remain well below our normal annual rainfall totals, the recent rain has provided welcome relief to our lakes, landscapes, lawns, and golf course.

Turf Masters will be in the community during the week of July 20, to complete their next lawn treatment. Turf Masters got delayed on their previous treatment due to the amount of rain we received prior to their treatment. The lawn crew continue to do an outstanding job maintaining the community and working hard to keep everything healthy, green, and looking its best throughout the summer months.

As you drive throughout the community, you’ve probably noticed many baby deer. Florida’s white-tailed deer fawning season typically runs from April through July, with most fawns being born in June. During this time, it is very common to see a fawn lying quietly alone in tall grass or other sheltered areas. While it may appear to be abandoned, this is completely normal.

Mother deer intentionally leave their fawns hidden for up to 10 to 12 hours at a time while they forage nearby and return regularly to nurse and care for them. If you encounter a fawn, please do not touch, feed, or relocate it. The best thing you can do is leave it undisturbed and keep a safe distance. Thank you for helping protect the wildlife that makes The Great Outdoors such a special place.

On Thursday, July 23, we will hold our annual Employee Golf Tournament, one of my favorite employee events of the year.

It gives our staff the opportunity to step away from their normal routines, spend some time together outside of work, and simply enjoy a fun afternoon on the golf course. Throughout the year, our employees work incredibly hard to keep The Great Outdoors looking its best while providing excellent service to our residents and guests. This tournament is a small way to thank our team and give everyone a chance to relax, enjoy some friendly competition, and share a few laughs with coworkers from different departments.

The event isn’t just about golf; it’s about building relationships, strengthening teamwork, and recognizing the outstanding people who make this community such a special place. Whether someone shoots their best round ever or spends more time searching for golf balls than hitting them, it’s always an afternoon filled with great memories and plenty of good-natured competition.

I would like to thank everyone who helps organize and participate in this annual tradition. Events like these remind us that a strong team is built not only through hard work, but also through spending time together and supporting one another.

Rehearse, Repeat, Reflect...

One of the simplest ways to become a better putter is to follow three steps: Rehearse, Repeat, Reflect.

Before you putt, rehearse the stroke you think the putt requires. This is your prediction of the speed and feel needed to get the ball to the hole.

Then, step in and repeat that stroke. Don’t worry about mechanics or results. Simply recreate the motion you just rehearsed.

After the putt, reflect by asking yourself one question: Did I repeat my rehearsal stroke?

If you did and the putt didn’t finish where you expected, your prediction was off. If you didn’t, your execution was off.

This simple question helps you identify whether the issue was your prediction or your stroke. Over time, you’ll improve both.

The next time you’re on the green, keep it simple: Rehearse. Repeat. Reflect.

A better process leads to better putting.

The Quiet Craftsman Behind TGO’s Beautiful Landscape

Lucas Hapeman If you’ve spent any time walking or driving through The Great Outdoors, you’ve probably seen Lucas Hapeman hard at work. Whether he’s carefully shaping hedges, trimming palm trees, or maintaining the community’s landscape, he’s usually focused on the task at hand. Chances are you’ve also received a friendly wave as you passed by.

Lucas isn’t one to seek attention. In fact, he admits he’s naturally shy. But his quiet dedication and craftsmanship haven’t gone unnoticed. Residents regularly compliment the beautiful appearance of TGO’s grounds, and Lucas has played a big part in keeping them that way since joining the maintenance team on March 3, 2020.

His journey to TGO wasn’t a straight path. Originally from the northernmost part of New York, Lucas made three attempts to relocate to Florida before finally finding the right opportunity. While working for a lawn care company, he became friends with David Cramper, who eventually accepted a position at TGO. “I’ll never forget what Dave told me,” Lucas recalls. “He said, ‘This place is a career, not another job.’”

That was all the encouragement he needed.

Today, Lucas not only works at TGO but also calls the community home, living on Oak Cove. Finding a place to live inside the resort was an unexpected bonus after initially staying with relatives in Deltona.

Growing up on a dairy farm helped shape his remarkable work ethic. Farm chores began when he was just eight or nine years old, and by age eleven he was already mowing grass. The long hours taught him discipline, responsibility, and the value of hard work - lessons that still guide him today.

“I’ve pretty much been working my whole life,” he says with a smile.

Although many residents assume Lucas has formal training in horticulture, nearly everything he knows about ornamental plants, hedges, and palm trees has been selftaught. “I learned grass growing up on the farm,” he explains. “The plants came later.”

His first experience trimming hedges came while working at a private residence in New York. Given the freedom to

shape the property’s landscape however he thought best, Lucas discovered he had a natural eye for it. The homeowner loved his work, and Lucas continued maintaining the property for fifteen years.

Palm trees, however, were something entirely new after moving to Florida. “I’d never even seen palm trees until I moved down here,” he laughs.

Instead of being intimidated, Lucas watched experienced tree crews at work, studied their techniques, and practiced until he developed his own confidence. Today, he’s known for the careful, sculpted look of the palms throughout TGO. “I almost think of it like using a scalpel,” he says. “You have to be gentle.”

The Florida weather presents its own challenges. Summer heat, humidity, and climbing trees while wearing safety gear can make for difficult days, but Lucas appreciates the cooler months, calling winter the perfect time for trimming.

When asked what he enjoys outside of work, Lucas pauses. “I really haven’t done much since I moved here,” he admits.

He isn’t much of a beachgoer after experiencing a near-drowning incident when he was younger. Instead, he enjoys spending time taking care of his own yard, following familiar routines, and finding satisfaction in a job well done.

For Lucas, landscaping isn’t simply maintenance it’s craftsmanship. Every hedge, every palm, and every neatly trimmed landscape reflects the quiet pride he takes in his work.

The next time you see Lucas working around the community, don’t be surprised if he looks up and gives you a wave. It’s a small gesture from one of TGO’s most humble employees - someone whose hard work helps make The Great Outdoors look its very best every single day.

A New Chapter of Leadership

Getting to Know

Lauren Clark

When Lauren Clark was asked to step into the role of Chairperson of Board of Directors, she brought with her much more than years of board experience.

A retired attorney with a sharp legal mind, quick wit, and genuine appreciation for the community she now calls home, Lauren combines thoughtful leadership with a friendly, approachable personality.

From growing up in New York and building a distinguished legal career to finding her place at TGO, her journey is as interesting as it is inspiring.

We recently sat down with Lauren to learn more about the person behind the position.

Where did you go to college?

I stayed in New York City for college, earning my bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from John Jay College.

Later, I attended New York Law School while working full-time, and also completed business studies at Pace University.

ing the family farm. My interest in genealogy led to the discovery that my father’s ancestors were some of the earliest settlers in Australia and my mother’s ancestors lived in New York State in the 1700’s. Researching family history has always been one of my favorite hobbies.

How did your legal career begin?

After college, I worked in the auditing department of a bank while attending law school at night. Once I earned my law degree, I accepted a position with an insurance company in Binghamton, New York, where I worked for 15 years.

I eventually joined the Delaware County Court System as a Court Attorney, serving two different judges until I retired in 2017. My work covered Family Court, Surrogate’s Court, County Court, and the New York State Supreme Court, giving me experience in everything from family matters and estates to criminal and civil cases.

Okay - tell us how you discovered The Great Outdoors?

Pete (and his late wife) actually found TGO before we were married. While traveling through Florida, he stopped here, played golf, loved the community, and eventually purchased an RV lot in Oak Cove in 1993. After we married, we began spending winters here together.

In 2015 we decided to sell the RV and purchase the home we live in today on Plantation Drive. After I retired in 2017, we began spending our winters here, and over time we’ve stayed longer each year because we truly love being here. We are not full-time residents as we live in Delaware County during the summer.

We know you are married, tell us about your family.

I married my husband, Pete, in 2006 after a mutual friend introduced us. Pete’s family has deep roots in dairy farming in New York, with five generations work-

It’s more challenging, but I’ve really enjoyed it. I work much more closely with the CSA staff, and I can’t say enough good things about them. From management to the office staff to the maintenance crews, we have outstanding employees who care deeply about this community.

Any closing words? What makes The Great Outdoors such a special place to you?

It’s the people. When you first arrive, you may not know anyone, but before long you’ve made wonderful friends from all over the country. Whether it’s golf, biking, nature walks, or simply getting together with neighbors, there’s always something to do and someone to enjoy it with. People come here to enjoy life, and that creates a welcoming atmosphere. That’s what makes The Great Outdoors feel special.

I believe it has. As an attorney, you’re trained to evaluate facts, apply the relevant rules and reach a con-

Edwin Loftin Edwin, how long have you been working at the Pro Shop?

Just a couple of weeks. I’m still getting settled in, but I’m really enjoying it.

Do you live here in The Great Outdoors?

Yes, my wife and I have lived here since 2022. We live over on Harmony Lane and we’re full-time residents.

And what brought you here?

I had retired a couple of years earlier after working in healthcare for about 20 years. We were ready to get rid of the big house and the big yard. We enjoy golfing, and having a smaller home where someone else takes care of the yard is a pretty nice lifestyle.

Are you an RVer also?

Absolutely. We’ve been RVing for about five years now. We actually got started during COVID. I worked in healthcare at the time and wanted to get away whenever I had the opportunity. Hotels were hard to find, so my wife and I decided to buy what we call “our house to travel with.” It turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve made.

Where have your travels taken you?

We just got back from a six-week trip through North Florida and Alabama. Since we started RVing, we’ve probably traveled through 15 to 25 states. We haven’t made it out West yet, but it’s definitely on our list. We keep saying that next year might finally be the year.

Are you originally from Florida?

No, I was born and raised in Kinston, North Carolina. It’s in the Sandhills region, about halfway between Raleigh and the coast. Later, I spent about 20 years living and working in Morehead City, right on the North Carolina coast.

Evacuation With Your Pets

No one wants to evacuate and that includes your pets. In the past decade, the number of people that travel with pets has become mainstream rather than a niche activity. RVers have been ahead of the curve as many have been doing so for many years.

It is estimated that around 70% of U.S. households own at least one pet. About 64% of pet owners prefer to travel with their pets in automobiles, while roughly 33% choose planes. The pet travel market has reached several billion dollars, with growth potential to continue as demand for pet friendly accommodations and transport rises.

This demand has necessitated local shelters to adjust their facilities to accommodate pets. More and more hotels, rentals and Airbnb accommodations are pet friendly. So, we need to include our furry family members in our evacuation plans.

Preparing for an evacuation should include pet preparations as well. Many of us already travel with our pets, so they are relatively comfortable with vehicle travel. If they are not, it might be a good idea to make a few short trips with any pet that exhibits fear or anxiety when taking a vehicle ride. Doing this every so often to ensure that in an emergency evacuation they will be less likely to get anxious and scared as things will be happening fairly fast.

Some suggestions for a checklist for evacuating with pets.

Have A Plan: Know safe routes, pet‑friendly shelters, and use a checklist.

Stay Calm: Pets mirror your stress levels; calm handling helps them remain composed.

Safe Shelter: If indoors, keep pets in a secure, pet‑friendly room; if outdoors, ensure escape routes are clear. If your pet is not comfortable in crowds, this can be problematic. Be able to maintain total control of your pets at all times in or around shelters. If you are unsure how to care for your pet in an emergency, contact the Brevard County Emergency Management Office (321-6376670), the Brevard County Animal Services (321-633-2024), or the Brevard County SPCA (321-567-3615).

Here are some items to include in your checklist: • Emergency kit: Include food (3–7 days minimum), water (enough for 3-7 days), bowls, medications, leashes, chew toys, sanitary supplies (including waste bags), and your pet’s medical records.

• Put your pets’ ID on their collars: your name, address, and phone number. Because cellphones and landlines might be down for a while, consider adding the phone number of a relative or friend who lives outside of your area.

• In addition to having pets’ IDs on their collars, get your pets microchipped. Be sure to register the chip in your name and provide additional phone numbers.

• Have copies of your pets’ microchip information and contact information for the microchip company in case your pets get lost. Update the information yearly.

• Current photos of your pets in case you get separated • Buy carriers appropriate for your pets’ sizes, which means carriers that give them enough room to stand and turn around. The carriers should be easy to transport. Label each carrier with the pet’s name and your phone number.

• Ensure that you have a leash and an extra one (just in case).

• Supplies to consider having in a Pet Evacuation Kit, roll of paper towels, pet-friendly cleaner (for accidents that may happen), trash bags, small bag of litter, liter pan, pet first aid kit, blanket, food and water bowels, can opener and spoon, pair of heavy gloves, your pet’s treats, and pet waste bags.

A good idea is to periodically practice getting the pet evacuation kit together or better is preparing one and updating it periodically.

We hope we never need to evacuate, but having plans and practicing them before they are needed will help ensure that you and your pet(s) evacuate safely and have what you need to make it a safe evacuation.

The Woodpeckers of TGO - Nature’s Tree Keepers

One of the sounds that truly makes The Great Outdoors RV & Golf Resort feel alive is the tapping and drumming of woodpeckers throughout our community. From the towering pines to old oaks along our trails and golf course, these birds are constantly at work helping nature in ways many people never realize.

Woodpeckers are incredibly important to the ecosystem. By drilling into dead or damaged wood, they help control insects like ants, termites, beetles, and wood-boring larvae. The nesting holes they create later become homes for other wildlife including bluebirds, owls, squirrels, tree frogs, and even some ducks.

Here are four beautiful woodpeckers many of us are lucky to see right here in TGO.

Red-bellied Woodpecker

The Red-bellied Woodpecker is probably the woodpecker most residents notice first. Despite the name, the red on the belly is usually hard to see. What stands out is the bright red cap and neck along with the striking blackand-white zebra pattern on the back.

These birds are highly intelligent and very adaptable. You’ll often hear their rolling calls before spotting them climbing tree trunks or visiting feeders. They help keep insect populations under control while also spreading seeds through the foods they gather and store.

The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker commonly found in our area.

Tiny, quick, and active, they are often seen hopping along branches searching for insects hidden in bark.

Their small size allows them to reach places larger birds cannot. Even though they are tiny, they play a big role in controlling insects that can damage trees and plants. They are also frequent visitors to backyard feeders and are usually very comfortable around people.

Pileated Woodpecker

The Pileated Woodpecker is truly one of the most impressive birds in Florida. Nearly crowsized with a bright red crest, this bird often stops people in their tracks when they see one flying through the woods.

If you notice large rectangular holes carved into dead trees, there’s a good chance a Pileated Woodpecker was searching for carpenter ants and beetle larvae. These powerful birds help recycle dead wood naturally and create nesting cavities later used by many other animals.

Seeing one in TGO is always special and reminds us how important mature trees and natural wooded areas are to wildlife.

Northern Flicker

Unlike most woodpeckers, Northern Flickers spend a surprising amount of time on the ground. They are commonly seen searching lawns and open areas for ants, which make up a large part of their diet.

They have beautiful spotted plumage and a flash of bright color visible when they fly. Flickers help naturally control ant populations and are another reminder that every species has its own important role in the balance of nature.

Living Alongside Wildlife

Woodpeckers are a wonderful example of why preserving trees, dead snags, and natural spaces matters. What may look like an old tree to us can actually be a feeding station, nesting site, or future home for countless forms of wildlife.

The next time you hear tapping in the trees around TGO, take a moment to look up. You may just spot one of nature’s hardest workers helping keep our ecosystem healthy every single day.

Alphabet Soup, Missiles, Monkeys and

A Lighthouse At Cape Canaveral

I consider myself an adventurer at heart, and Florida never seems to run out of places to explore. So when a friend sent me a link about a guided tour of a lighthouse hidden away on government property at Cape Canaveral, it took only seconds for me to take the bait.

Let the adventure begin.

I was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, but when my husband and I retired and moved to Titusville in 2015, I discovered a side of Florida I had never really noticed before. Surrounded by wildlife, natural beauty, and a rich local history, I found myself falling in love with the Space Coast. Every day seemed to offer something new to learn or explore.

Still, one question immediately came to mind when I signed up for this tour: “Am I the only person who doesn’t know there’s a lighthouse at Cape Canaveral?” Apparently, I was.

My friend and I selected the four-hour Premier Lighthouse & Spacecraft Tour, which costs $62.50 per person.

Because the tour takes place on an active government installation, participants must complete a security clearance form at least 48 hours in advance. We submitted ours six days early and received approval the same day. The process was easy, and before long Friday morning arrived.

At 9:00am, we arrived at the Sands History Center, our meeting point for the tour. The first thing that caught my eye was a pair of enormous, odd-looking rockets that appeared to be strapped together nose-to-tail.

That turned out to be my first lesson of the day.

A volunteer docent named Karen welcomed our small group aboard a white shuttle van. Along with our driver and another volunteer guide, she would spend the next four hours introducing us to a world of history, science, military operations, and space exploration that had been hiding in plain sight.

Karen immediately warned us about what I soon began calling “alphabet soup.” Everything has an acronym.

Within minutes I learned that what I had always casually referred to as “NASA” was actually much more complicated. The land is divided between Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS), two neighboring facilities with different missions and histories. Together they occupy thousands of acres of Florida’s Space Coast, much of which remains undeveloped and protected as wildlife refuge.

I had lived nearby for years and had no idea.

As we drove through the property, Karen pointed out remnants of America’s earliest missile and rocket programs.

The strange rockets we had seen upon arrival were NAVAHO missiles, experimental vehicles developed during the early Cold War. I quickly discovered there is a difference between rockets and missiles – a missile can be guided while a rocket follows a predetermined path. Ten minutes into the tour, I was already struggling to keep up. Fortunately, Karen possessed a remarkable talent for answering questions before anyone could ask them.

One of the most fascinating stories involved the early days of spaceflight before astronauts became household names. During the race to reach space, monkeys and chimpanzees were trained and launched on test missions to help scientists understand how living beings would respond to space travel.

We went to see the lighthouse, but there are a lot of other cool things to see!

One famous chimpanzee named Ham became part of space history after successfully completing a mission. According to our guides, he returned less than thrilled with the experience and promptly bit his handler after emerging from his capsule. Given the circumstances, I couldn’t entirely blame him.

As we continued through the property, the tour shifted from rockets to Florida history. Long before launch pads and spacecraft dominated the landscape, Cape Canaveral was home to farming communities growing oranges, pineapples, and sugar cane. Families lived among wetlands and scrublands until the federal government began acquiring land in the late 1940s for missile testing and space operations. Most of those communities disappeared, but traces remain. Two pioneer cemeteries still sit within the restricted area, and descendants of those original families are invited back annually to visit the graves of their ancestors. It was a powerful reminder that before this became the Space Coast, it was simply home.

Soon we arrived at Launch Complex 9-10, where some of America’s earliest missile testing took place.

Standing among the weathered concrete remains, I began to appreciate just how much history survives here.

Massive structures once used to support launches now sit quietly beneath Florida’s sun. Karen pointed out a flame bucket – a large concrete channel designed to direct rocket exhaust away from the launch pad. To me, it looked like something from a giant skateboard park.

Then came the highlight of the tour - The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse.

Built in 1868, the lighthouse originally stood closer to the shoreline. When coastal erosion threatened its future, workers accomplished an astonishing feat: they dismantled the entire structure piece by piece and moved it approximately one mile inland before reassembling it in 1894. Today the black-and-white striped lighthouse stands 151 feet tall.

Our group was given special access to enter the structure, which is not always open to visitors. Inside, we climbed through the first several levels while learning about the lighthouse keepers who once lived and worked there. The cast-iron construction, ingenious assembly markings, and preserved keeper buildings offered a glimpse into a time when maintaining a lighthouse required constant attention and hard physical labor.

Walking through those rooms felt less like visiting a museum and more like stepping into another century.

After exploring the lighthouse grounds and gift shop, we headed toward Hangar C. From the outside, it looks fairly ordinary.

Inside, it is anything but. Built in 1953, Hangar C is the oldest surviving missile assembly building on Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. It houses an extraordinary collection of missiles, spacecraft hardware, antennas, and artifacts from America’s early space and missile programs.

As I wandered among the displays, I couldn’t help but notice the military’s apparent sense of humor. There were missiles with names like SNARK, THOR, PERSHING, and MACE. It sounded less like a weapons program and more like a cast of comic book characters.

One exhibit showcased America’s iconic silver space suits. I learned that the shiny silver appearance wasn’t a technical necessity at all – it originated from Hollywood’s vision of what space travelers should look like. Somehow that fact made perfect sense. Continued...

The SM-62 Snark was an intercontinental-range surface-to-surface cruise missile developed by the Northrop Corporation for the U.S. Air Force. Designed as a Cold War deterrent, it was America’s first operational intercontinental missile, meant to carry a thermonuclear warhead to targets up to 6,325 miles away.

Outside Hangar C, the tour continued to Complex 26, where America launched Explorer 1, the nation’s first satellite, in 1958. There we entered the historic firing room where launches were once controlled. Behind thick glass windows sat rows of vintage consoles, switches, and equipment that looked straight out of a science-fiction movie.

One lucky member of our group was selected to participate in a launch demonstration. I won’t spoil the experience.

Let’s just say that when the sights, sounds, and vibrations begin, you gain a whole new appreciation for what these facilities once accomplished.

The final portion of the tour took us past additional launch complexes, missile silos, and remnants of programs that helped shape America’s journey into space. Every stop seemed to reveal another chapter of history hiding just beyond public view.

By the end of four hours, my head was spinning with facts, stories, acronyms, and enough missile terminology to last a lifetime. Yet what stayed with me most wasn’t the technology. It was the realization that this landscape tells multiple stories at once.

It is the story of lighthouse keepers battling isolation and storms. It is the story of Florida pioneers whose communities disappeared to make way for progress.

It is the story of engineers, scientists, soldiers, and astronauts pushing the boundaries of what was possible. And

somehow, all of those stories exist side by side on the same stretch of coastline.

I began the day wondering whether I was the only person who didn’t know there was a lighthouse hidden inside Cape Canaveral.

I ended the day realizing there was much more hidden there than a lighthouse.

If you enjoy history, space exploration, Florida heritage, or simply discovering places that most people never get to see, this tour is worth every minute.

You will also find your Security Clearance Form which must be submitted no later than 48 hours before the date of your tour.

Carolyn Bonfig - Blue Heron’s Bartendar Server

Carolyn is one of the familiar faces behind the bar and in the dining room at the Blue Heron. She was born in Evanston, Illinois, but at just five years old her family traded snowy winters for the sunshine of South Florida, settling in Fort Lauderdale. She attended Plantation High School, where her greatest passion was horses. In fact, she has been riding since she was 10 years old and recently returned to the saddle after taking some time away from the sport. Today, she leases a horse and enjoys spending time riding whenever she can.

Her career in the restaurant industry began more than 45 years ago while working in a retirement community serving meals. Although she took a 15-year break while raising a family, she eventually returned to the business she loved.

Over the years, Carolyn has worked at a variety of restaurants, including the original Longhorn Steakhouse in Nashville, Tennessee.

Tennessee has remained a special place for her ever since. She has traveled there regularly since she was 18 years old and now owns property in Carthage, Tennessee.

When she isn’t working at the Blue Heron or riding horses, Carolyn spends much of her time outdoors maintaining the acre of property where she lives on Merritt Island.

Asked what she enjoys most about working at the Blue Heron, her answer came quickly: the people. “I really love the camaraderie,” she says. “There are good people here.”

Hamilton Disston Florida’s First Visionary

Long before Florida became a state filled with subdivisions, highways, golf courses, and theme parks, much of the peninsula was viewed by outsiders as an untamed wilderness. Vast wetlands stretched for miles. Mosquitoes were relentless. Seasonal flooding made travel difficult, and large portions of the interior were considered nearly impossible to develop.

Yet in the late 1800s, one ambitious businessman looked at that wild landscape and saw opportunity on a scale few could even imagine.

Hamilton Disston may not be a household name today, but his influence on Florida was enormous. In many ways, he helped shape the direction of modern Florida long before the state became the tourism and retirement destination we know today.

Disston was born in Philadelphia in 1844 and made his fortune through the family business, the Disston Saw Works, one of the largest saw manufacturers in the world at the time. By the early 1880s, he was already wealthy and looking for new investment opportunities. Florida, meanwhile, was struggling financially after the Civil War. The state was heavily in debt and owned millions of acres of swampy, undeveloped land that many considered worthless.

Disston saw something different.

In 1881, he made what would become one of the most remarkable land deals in American history. He purchased approximately four million acres of Florida land for about one million dollars. The transaction became known as the “Disston Purchase,” and overnight, Hamilton Disston became one of the largest private landowners in the United States.

The deal changed Florida almost immediately.

The money helped the state recover financially and restored confidence among northern investors who had previously viewed Florida as risky and undeveloped. Historians often point to the Disston Purchase as the spark that ignited Florida’s first major land boom. Suddenly, people began looking at Florida not as an isolated swamp, but as a place with economic potential.

But Hamilton Disston was not simply buying land to hold onto it. He had a vision for transforming Florida itself.

At the heart of that vision was water.

Disston believed that much of Florida’s interior could be reclaimed through drainage projects. If canals could redirect water and lower flood levels, he believed huge areas of fertile land could be opened for farming, transportation, and future communities. It was a bold idea, especially for the 1880s.

His crews began digging canals throughout Central and South Florida, particularly around the Kissimmee River and areas connected to Lake Okeechobee. Some projects attempted to connect rivers and waterways to improve transportation and drain wetlands at the same time. At the time, many people viewed the work as revolutionary engineering.

One of the areas most closely associated with Disston was Kissimmee. He invested heavily there, helping establish transportation routes, steamboat operations, hotels, and commercial activity. For a period, Kissimmee became a symbol of Florida’s future growth and optimism.

Disston’s efforts also helped attract another legendary name in Florida history: Henry Flagler. As land development expanded and investors gained confidence, railroad construction accelerated across the state. Rail lines opened the door for tourism, agriculture, and population growth on a scale Florida had never seen before.

For a while, it appeared Hamilton Disston’s vision was working exactly as planned. But Florida has always had a

way of humbling ambitious dreamers.

Many of the drainage projects proved far more complicated and expensive than expected. Florida’s ecosystem was not something easily controlled with canals and excavation equipment. Seasonal rains, fluctuating water levels, and difficult terrain created endless challenges. Some projects succeeded temporarily, while others struggled financially or failed outright.

Over time, many historians and environmental experts would point to this era as the beginning of Florida’s long battle between development and nature. The drainage philosophy pioneered during Disston’s time eventually contributed to major environmental changes throughout the Everglades and Central Florida watershed systems.

Decades later, restoration efforts would attempt to repair some of those impacts.

Financial pressures also began catching up with Disston himself. His massive investments stretched his resources thin, and land sales did not always keep pace with expectations. The enormous gamble that once made him famous slowly became more difficult to sustain.

Hamilton Disston died in 1896 at just 51 years old.

Though his fortune faded, his impact on Florida never truly disappeared.

Today, many people drive through communities, farmland, canals, and transportation corridors that exist partly because of the development momentum Disston helped create more than a century ago. His story is one of ambition, risk, vision, and unintended consequences - a reminder that Florida’s modern history was shaped not only by sunshine and tourism, but also by powerful personalities determined to reinvent the landscape itself.

Love him or criticize him, Hamilton Disston helped change Florida forever.

One of the biggest ways Hamilton Disston changed Florida was by restoring financial confidence in the state. Before his massive land purchase in 1881, Florida was deeply in debt and still recovering from the Civil War. When Disston invested one million dollars into the state, it immediately helped stabilize Florida’s finances and attracted outside investors who had previously ignored the region.

Disston also helped open up Central Florida for settlement and agriculture. By digging canals and attempting to drain wetlands, he made previously flooded areas appear more suitable for farming and development. Whether all of the projects worked perfectly or not, they created the belief

that Florida’s interior could support major growth.

Transportation throughout Florida also changed during this period. Disston invested heavily in steamboat routes, canals, and community infrastructure, especially around Kissimmee. Improved transportation made it easier for people, supplies, and crops to move through areas that had once been difficult to reach.

His development efforts also helped encourage railroad expansion across the state. Investors and railroad developers, including Henry Flagler, began seeing Florida as a place with economic potential instead of simply swampland and wilderness. The expansion of railroads would eventually transform tourism, trade, and population growth throughout Florida.

Disston’s projects also permanently altered Florida’s relationship with water. His drainage canals were among the earliest large-scale attempts to reshape the state’s natural wetlands and waterways. That philosophy of controlling and redirecting water continued for decades and played a major role in the development of modern Florida. It also contributed to environmental challenges that are still being addressed today through restoration projects in places like the Everglades.

Perhaps most importantly, Hamilton Disston helped change the way people imagined Florida itself. Before his arrival, much of the country viewed Florida as remote, swampy, and undeveloped. After the Disston era began, Florida increasingly became seen as a land of opportunity, investment, tourism, and future growth - an image that continues to define the state today.

The benefits of the starches lessen and the sugars increase as the banana ripens…making them good for the recipe below (or bread).

TODAY’S RECIPE: Chocolate Monkey (1 serving) 1 ½ scoop of vanilla ice cream 1 oz vanilla vodka (reg vodka works) 1 ½ oz banana liquor ½ ripe banana 3 tbsp chocolate syrup – more for garnish

Directions: In a blender mix all ingredients until milkshake consistency. In a tall chilled glass, drizzle a little more chocolate syrup down the insides of the glass. Pour the milkshake into the glass and top with cocoa powder, whipped cream or another drizzle of banana liquor. Enjoy!!

Funny Thing Is… Road Trip Adventures Remember when we were young and loved to go camping? Yeah, all we needed was a small tent, a blanket for the ground, and enough beef jerky, chips, and beer to last a couple days. Well, at 71 years old, my idea of roughing it is staying at a hotel that doesn’t have a coffee maker in the room. Actually, since 60 I take it one step further and stay only at Embassy Suites which have free cooked-to-order breakfasts and free drinks and snacks every evening so roughing it to me would be staying at a Holiday Inn instead.

Remember when we were young and our least sober friend would yell, “Road Trip,” and we would all jump around yelling, “Yeah man,” and high-fiving each other? Well, since I became a, “Get off my lawn,” 71-year-old, if someone yells road trip, I slap them and ask them if they overdosed on their 5-Hour Energy drink.

Think about it. For a road trip now we would load up the camper with enough supplies to survive a six-month wilderness expedition. Canned food, bottled water, flashlights, bug spray, first-aid kits, extra batteries, and enough medications to stock a small pharmacy. Then we would probably end up stopping within a mile of a Walmart.

So you hit the road for an 8-hour, 400-mile trip. We used to drive that nonstop but alas, we have to stop every two hours to stretch and end up discussing our lower back with total strangers. You finally arrive at what looks like a nice campground, usually occupied by others around our age or very young families whose kids look like they just finished the entire candy counter from the Candy Factory. Every evening, retirees emerge from their campers carrying folding chairs and their favorite adult beverages. Within minutes, complete strangers are discussing weather forecasts, grandkids, and whose knee replacement was most successful.

Unless you have a shower in your camper, you will have to experience the shower huts. In case you weren’t feeling your age already, some wise guy snaps a photo of you on your way to the shower with your shower caddy, granny shower cap, and skid proof flip flops. Sigh. Hey, here’s an idea for our next road trip. We can visit 11 different countries and taste each of their unique cuisines, stores, and adult beverages and still get home in time to sleep in our own comfy beds. How? Epcot! -Sammy -

A Minute with Meghan… Are you being S.M.A.R.T. about your goals?

Last issue we talked about the FITTE principle and how it can help you plan and adapt your workouts to achieve your goals.

However, we didn’t talk about how you go about setting goals in the first place.

Every individual will have their own goals, whether related to fitness, education, business, career, or even personal growth.

There are 3 different types of goals: Outcome Goals, Process Goals, and Performance Goals.

1. Outcome goals refer to the final “outcome” or result you are ultimately working towards.

2. Process goals are the daily behaviors that need to take place for you to reach said goal.

3. Performance goals are the “checkpoints” you reach along the way as you progress towards your outcome goal.

Overall, these goals are interconnected as they collectively help you shape, plan, and manage a specific goal.

However, setting goals and working towards achieving them is great, but when goals are too general or lack measurable actions, it can become very difficult to be successful. Utilizing the acronym S.M.A.R.T. provides a framework in which goals can be set, managed, measured, and achieved.

S.M.A.R.T. stands for specific, measurable, achievable/ attainable, realistic and/or relevant, and time-based. (Of course, you know this article will relate to fitness goals, but you can use this principle in other goal-setting situations.)

So, let’s break down each aspect so you know how to set S.M.A.R.T. goals to achieve everything you want.

Specific: Choose a goal that is clearly defined. Saying, “I want to lose weight,” or “I want to walk more,” are not specific goals. How much weight do you want to lose? What does “walk more” mean: steps, time, miles, etc.? When getting specific, try to answer the five “W” questions: What do I want to accomplish? Why is this goal important to me? Who is involved? Where is it located? Which resources or limits are involved?

Measurable: The goal should be something that is objectively measured, so that you can track your progress. This can include specific numbers, percentages, or other measurable indicators you can use to track your progress. This could be steps, miles, pounds of weight lifted, percentage of

one rep max, or time spent exercising. Using fitness trackers, whether digital or in a journal, can help keep you on track and motivated, as you see your progress.

Achievable/Attainable: Goals should be moderately difficult, yet achievable. Goals should be difficult enough to be challenging, but not exceed your current health and fitness abilities, which could result in failure and frustration. For example, if your goal is to walk 10,000 steps per day, but you’re just beginning, 10,000 steps may be too big of a jump from being sedentary. However, aiming for 5,000 steps per day might just be the challenge you need until you’re strong enough to add more.

Realistic/Relevant: By asking yourself the five “W” questions when nailing down your specific goal, you should have already answered why this goal is relevant (or important) to you in the big picture. However, you can also break that down even more when you include it in your process goals. For example, if your goal is to become more flexible, then a relevant addition to your workout would be including a stretch portion to your daily routine.

Your goal also needs to be realistic. Setting goals that are unrealistic, automatically sets you up for failure, which leads to frustration. If your goal is to lose 20 pounds in two weeks… that’s pretty unrealistic. Healthy and sustainable weight loss is about one pound per week, so setting a goal to lose 20 pounds in 5-6 months, is a much more realistic goal.

Your goal also needs to be realistic.

Setting goals that are unrealistic, automatically sets you up for failure which leads to frustration.

Also, keep in mind hurdles or limitations that may stand in the way of you achieving your goals. For example, let’s say you want to become a powerlifter, but you have chronic pain, injuries, or medical conditions that make it difficult to participate in regular weight-lifting programs. You may have to modify exercises, your workout routine, or even your goal to ensure it is something realistically attainable.

Time-bound: Setting goals with a time frame is important to keep you on track. This gives you a deadline instead of pushing for a goal that you may achieve “some day.” Setting time-bound goals ensures that your outcome goal (aka end

result) remains a priority, and that even when you’re faced with hurdles or setbacks, you can stay focused.

In general, short-term fitness goals should be things you plan to achieve in the next six months or less, anything longer than that is considered a more long-term goal. Achieving short-term goals (aka performance goals) can help you focus on one small goal, which progresses you toward your larger outcome goal.

Using our weight loss example again, setting a goal to lose 20 pounds by March 31, 2027, gives you a hard deadline. Breaking that larger goal into smaller performance goals can help keep you motivated and on track when “things” happen. Look at breaking larger goals into smaller ones like this: • Lose 5 pounds by August 31, 2026 • Lose another 5 pounds by November 30, 2026 • Lose another 5 pounds by January 31, 2027 • Lose the last 5 pounds before March 31, 2027 This is not only a healthy, realistic, and attainable timeline, it also allows for a few “slip-ups” since there are SIX holidays in that time frame (Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day)!

At the end of the day, goals don’t become a reality simply because we wish for them, but because we have a plan and consistently take action to achieve them. Whether your goal is to lose weight, walk more, be a powerlifter, or simply to begin a healthier lifestyle, using the S.M.A.R.T. framework helps create a roadmap for success. Remember, progress isn’t about perfection, but about making steady, intentional choices that move you one step closer to your goal. Celebrate the small victories along the way, learn from the setbacks, and don’t be afraid to adjust your plan when “life happens.”

No approval will be given without having all the required data available at the ARC Meeting for review.

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) will provide owners with a clear understanding of what is allowed and when ARC approval is needed. Gaining ARC approval is facilitated through a responsive process that is easy to use.

The ARC Guidelines and Application Form are available for download at TGOCSA.org or you can also pick up an application in the CSA Office Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 8:00am until 5:00pm.

Applications must be submitted to the CSA Office by 12:00 Noon on the Wednesday prior to the following Wednesday meeting date to be considered at that meeting.

The ARC is elected by property owners. ARC has eleven members, ten elected from representative districts and one elected by the whole membership to serve as chairman. Each ARC term is two years.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules: • Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed.

Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

• Also, be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility - 321-264-5009. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station 321-264-5048.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Note to all residents... and visitors. Please don’t put your trash out to the curb too early - especially overnight. And if possible, place it in a covered trash bin.

This time of year, with fewer people around the park, the local wildlife is working the night shift. Raccoons, opossums, armadillos, and other hungry critters consider an unattended trash bag an “all-you-can-eat buffet.” By morning, your neatly tied bag may have become dinner... with the leftovers scattered all over the neighborhood.

A few extra minutes can help keep TGO looking beautiful for both the humans and the wildlife.

The CSA has a contract with Spectrum that includes Spectrum TV Select and Spectrum Internet services. If you are experiencing problems with their service or need to set up a new service, call the number above. Tell them your community at The Great Outdoors has a bulk agreement known as the Bronze Package.

TGO Community Channel 732 Our television channel of the Community Services Association will be active for broadcasting board meetings. Your TV must be equipped with a Spectrum TV cable box or digital adapter.

Turf Masters regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, a granular nitrogen fertilizer and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects.

Turf Masters is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the Turf Masters list.

Application dates are scheduled for Sept 8, 9 & 10 Service Calls - July 23, August 6 & 20 Turf Masters advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.
