Last Play Day

It had to happen! The wonderful TGO golf course is now in full renovation status and the last day for play was last Sunday, April 14th. Work had already started, but an enthusiastic group of residents came out to dodge pipes and cones to get those last holes in. Photos start on page 26.

MANAGER’S CORNER

Dear TGO Community,

This is certainly an exciting time for The Great Outdoors! Our 30-year golf course renovation is now in full-swing. Both our irrigation and construction contractor have crews working on-site. They are busy laying pipe, roto-tilling our tees and greens, and rough-shaping our course for the future. Our CSA team is taking full advantage of this golf down-time to do other improvements on and around the course. You’ll find a more detailed update inside this issue of The Happenings. We have temporarily opened the driving range for our resident golfers’ use.

The golf course is now a construction zone and it’s closed to everyone for safety reasons. If you’re curious to see what the renovation looks like, please check out our TGOCSA.org website where you will find aerial progress photos taken by drones. We’ve had a few residents volunteer to take drone-photos of our course, and these photos and videos are now uploaded to our site. We promise to keep these photos and videos coming, so you can stay in touch with our progress. I’d like to thank Frank Whitmore and Rick Conover for their contributions to our progress photos.

This renovation has caused some problems and inconveniences already for our owners. With lots of moving equipment, pipe, and workers, there is extra traffic and occasional delays on our roads. The largest inconvenience so far happened last week. Our irrigation contractor was boring under Plantation to insert a pipe, and an improperly marked FPL power line was hit, causing a power outage effecting 109 properties along Plantation and Grande Haven. This outage lasted almost 36 hours. FPL is investigating this incident to determine exactly how it happened. I will make this information available to those who were impacted by the outage. As always, your patience is appreciated during this process, and please reach out to me and the CSA office staff if you need any assistance or have questions about the renovation.

April 26, 2024

We are now into our low season which means we will start to execute several budgeted improvement projects throughout the community. Here are a few projects that are underway now:

• Shoreline Erosion Project at 854-836 Plantation. CSA crews are reinforcing the shoreline with soil, rocks and shoreline erosion fabric to protect the properties along Lake Bradley from further erosion.

• Stormwater Improvement Project behind 303 Plantation. CSA crews have cleared overgrowth and are shooting elevations in order to excavate and redefine the stormwater passage ways along Beehive Drive to prevent flooding along the 200-300 block of Plantation.

• Cart-Path Bridge Replacement between Hole #14 - #15. Loyd Construction is replacing the wooden cart-path bridge through a small wetland that connects golfers from hole #14 to hole #15. This project is expected to take approximately three weeks.

• Road Sign Replacement along Plantation Entrance Road. New themed road signs are being installed along the Plantation entrance road from the guard gate to Lake Judy. These signs have a premier resort look and feel that match our wildlife message signs already in place.

I will close with a message about our wildlife. Those of you who are here at TGO now have probably noticed an increase in wildlife activity, including deer, wading birds, alligators, otters, etc. It’s spring time, and our wildlife are moving around and breeding. This is a great time of year for wildlife spotting, but it’s also a reminder to not engage or feed our wildlife, and obey the speed limit while on our roads. Remember that we are sharing our roads with pedestrians, golf carts, and our wildlife too.

Sincerely,

THE HAPPENINGS 3

PAR 3 RESULTS - APRIL 10

The first edition of what is bound to be an annual event is in the books and what a fun day it was. Designed to mimic the par 3 event at The Masters, 104 faithful TGO golfers headed out to tackle the challenging par 3 set up in a 2 player scramble format. The biggest cheer rolling over the fairways came on hole #11 as Christine Soucy plopped a chip shot on the green and waited as the ball graciously made its way down the slippery slope and into the cup. A hole in one!!! The 2 player scramble also produced an overall champion with a net score of 43.3. Art Barton and Sandy Tukey snagged the honor and were presented with their special trophy, constructed of “almost” crystal with a miniature green jacket all mounted on a piece of TGO Pepper Tree wood. A feast provided by course superintendent Shane Willey capped off the day of fun and laughs. Needless to say, a great time was had by all!!

GOLF RENOVATION UPDATE #2 - 4/21

Pepper Tree Clearing

We have completed the scheduled clearing process. Holes that saw pepper tree work: 2,3,4,5,6,7,9,10,14,15,16,17. We still have some work to do on #18 and #1 and will attempt to complete that in-house.

Irrigation Mainline Work

Completed thru hole #6. Work is progressing ahead of schedule. The pipe boring work has also been completed.

Roto-Till / Rough Shaping work

Roto-Till work had reached #8 at the time of this update. Rough shaping of #1, #2 and #18 had been completed.

In-House Projects

These are ongoing and include: perimeter clearing; re-shaping fairway bunkers on #2 and #13; eliminating the fairway bunker on the left side of #1; clearing of the lake bank on right side of #13; installing a fairway barrier material on #9 to curb root intrusion. More to follow in the next issue on this process.

Operations

The practice area is open for use by TGO residents only. Tokens are available during shop operating hours or at the CSA office. It will be ‘cash only sales’ if purchasing at the CSA office. PLEASE USE EXTREME CAUTION in the practice range area when workers are present. There are still quite a few sections of pipe that have to be moved over the next few weeks.

Safety Note

We have continued to warn residents to stay off of the golf course during the renovation period. Whether there are workers present or not, it is a construction area. Please do not travel on the golf course at any time unless accompanied by an approved TGO escort. We are planning a few opportunities to see the work in progress but not before the irrigation work nears completion.

Thanks for your patience!

Chuck & Shane

In this wide-angle drone photo taken 4/23 you can clearly see how rough #3 and #4 are looking at the moment. But work has started in earnest!

In this directly overhead drone photo the progress of shaping the green at #18 is coming along nicely. Photo also from 4/23.

What is Sulfation?

Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge.

Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.

We Now Have the Capability to Reverse the Sulfation Process!

• Increase Your Battery Life-Span

• Return Lost Capacity to Your Used Batteries

• Keep Your Battery Pack(s) in Sulfate-Free Condition

• Save Money on Purchasing New Batteries

• We provide you a detailed health report for each battery

COMMUNITY INFORMATION & NOTICES

Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

Check Your Golf Cart’s Brakes

Brakes that do not function will be your only excuse as to why you did not stop at a stop sign. Therefore, according to page 54 of our TGO’s Rules and Regulations of the road, you will be receiving a Traffic Citation for failure to obey a posted traffic sign.

Contractor Restrictions

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA. From Monday through Saturday, contrac tors must leave TGO by 6:00 pm from October 1 to April 30 and by 7:00 pm from May 1 to September 30.

TruGreen advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has eight AEDs located at CSA buildings. Propane For Sale

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:

• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

• Do not swim or wade in any of our lakes.

• Do not walk near the shorelines and do not walk your pets near the shoreline.

• Do not allow your pets to swim, exercise or drink in or near our lakes.

• While alligators can be active at any time, they are most active between dusk and dawn and move during the night to different water sources.

• Please give our alligators the respect and space they deserve.

NOTE: If you come across an aggressive alligator, please contact the CSA Office prior to SNAP and allow us to handle any situation.

TGO FIREWISE INFORMATION

RESIDENTS REDUCING WILDFIRE RISKS

HOME FIRES HAPPEN EVERY 93 SECONDS IN THE U.S.

Did you know that 75% of all fire deaths occur in Home Fires?!*

*(2021 statistic).

More than an unattended pot on the stove top, kitchen fires have quickly reduced homes and RVs to piles of smoking grey ash!

DRYER LINT:

Home fires start due to fire hazards we see daily but often ignore. DRYER LINT is a prime example! Clean the lint trap before and after you wash a load of clothes. Save this lint, in a dry container, for fire starting when camping or “surviving”. It is great tinder, but not in your home. Clean out the dryer vent pipe too.

SMOKE DETECTORS:

“Where there is smoke, there is fire”. Your smoke detector will alert you (but only if the batteries are good). Replace the batteries every year. Do this on a holiday and mark it on the calendar. Your smoke detectors should be mounted high on every floor, one in each bedroom and one near all sleeping areas. Test them, with the test button. Replace them every ten years.

OUTDOOR GRILLS:

Both gas and charcoal, outdoor grills cause about 10,000 structural fires a year. In addition, more than 22,000 people, mostly children, are sent to emergency rooms for treatment of burns and other injuries from outdoor grills every year, How can you make grilling less dangerous?

1. Grills should be kept at least 10 feet away from any structure.

Fire Hazard Awareness

2. Keep children away from the cooking area.

3. The grill chef should not be intoxicated or socially distracted: Just Cook The Meat!

4. Do Not rush the cleanup. Let the grill cool down!

5. Clean grill and tools, gas off; fire out, ready for next time.

LITHIUM-ION BATTERY FIRES are on the rise.

E-Bikes or any device powered by Lithium-Ion batteries can be an incendiary device if left plugged in, on charge, when you go away (for a week, or a month, or more when you travel)! Unplug when you do an “Away Trip” and put “On Charge” when you are back in charge.

Extension Cords are handy temporary tools for electrical transmission. They come with certain risks and are not a permanent replacement for household wiring. They generate heat and are subject to damage. Any cracks are a bad sign. Areas on the cord where the copper wire shows are a clue to get rid of the cord yesterday. Don’t run them under carpet. Animals, like mice, rats and squirrels like to chew on them too. Remember, E-Cords are temporary! So are the chewing pests.

Creating a Haven: Embracing Florida Friendly Gardens

Florida, with its unique climate and diverse ecosystems, offers an abundance of opportunities for gardening enthusiasts to cultivate sustainable and vibrant outdoor spaces.

The concept of Florida Friendly Gardens, endorsed by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/ IFAS), encourages homeowners to design landscapes that thrive in our distinct environment while conserving water, reducing pesticide use, and supporting local wildlife. At the heart of a Florida Friendly Garden lies the harmonious integration of native and adapted plants, carefully selected to with-

stand

occasional

plants not only require minimal maintenance but also contribute to the preservation of our delicate ecosystems by providing food and shelter for native wildlife, including birds, bees, and butterflies.

Caring For The Monarchs

One such iconic butterfly species that Floridians can play a role in conserving is the Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus). Recognized for its striking orange and black wings, the Monarch’s annual migration across North America captures the imagination of people worldwide. To support this magnificent butterfly’s lifecycle, incorporating Monarch-attracting plants into your Florida Friendly Garden is paramount. Milkweed varieties (Asclepias species) serve as the sole food source for Monarch caterpillars, making them essential components of any Monarch-friendly landscape. These plants not only sustain Monarch populations but also add a touch of natural beauty to your garden.

Variety Is Key

In addition to milkweed, incorporating a variety of nectar-rich flowers such as zinnias, pentas, and lantanas provides essential nourishment for adult Monarchs, ensuring their vitality throughout their journey. By

fostering a welcoming environment for Monarchs in our gardens, we contribute to the conservation of this iconic species while enhancing the biodiversity and aesthetic appeal of our outdoor spaces.

The TGO Approach

Here at The Great Outdoors we have a number of wonderful examples of incorporating Florida Friendly practices into our landscape. In addition, there are a great number of native plants that have been planted to provide food and environment for beneficial insects including the beautiful Monarch Butterfly.

Thank You, John

A lovely example is the native garden area at the north end of Lake Judy that was started by (and vigorously maintained for many years) by our own long-term resident John Rogers. He has devoted many hours over the years to beautifying the grounds of TGO and supporting the natural enviroment that residents so deeply cherish.

ONE MORE ROUND!

Picture this: a crew of enthusiastic golfers, their swings as varied as their choice of outfits, gathering for one last hurrah on the green before the bulldozers descend like mechanical giants to reshape their hallowed fairways.

With a mix of nostalgia and determination, they navigate the fairways, treating each hazard with reverence and reckless abandon. Emotions run high as they reach the last hole, but amidst tears and cheers, there’s a shared understanding that while the course may change, the memories forged on its greens will endure.

And who knows? Perhaps the revamped course will bring even more tales of triumph and tragedy, laughter and challenges for TGO golfers and their guests.

SPACE VIEW PARK

A Space Coast Hidden Gem

Close to Downtown Titusville and 15 miles directly across from the launch pads, Space View Park is the first and only park in America that honors astronauts and the men and women who helped America lead the world in space exploration.

Throughout the park you can walk through the history of space and compare your handprints to those of astronauts from all of the historic space programs. This park is also a prime spot to watch a rocket launch. Get there early and settle in as you watch the rocket soar into the sky.

Located 5 miles north from Highway 50 off of U.S.1 on Broad Street on Highway 406 (Garden Street) off of Indian River Avenue.

Amenities At This Park

• Close to downtown and restaurants

• Compare your handprints to those of the Mercury Astronauts

• Gaze across the beautiful Indian River at the shuttle launch pads

• Picnic Areas/Shelters

• Restrooms

• View the astronaut’s mission logos carved in black granite

• Walkthrough history of space from the Chinese discovery of Rockets in 3rd century BC to Space Station Freedom

Caring for Wildlife

Please Don’t Feed—Allow Wildlife To Be Wild.

Whether it is a flock of gentle birds, deer strolling through your lot, or an alligator getting some sun at the edge of the golf course, it is important that we respect these animals. Feeding wildlife might seem like a compassionate act, but it can have significant negative consequences for both the animals and the environment. Firstly, feeding wildlife can disrupt their natural foraging behaviors and lead to dependency on human handouts. This dependency can result in animals losing their ability to find food independently, leading to malnutrition and decreased survival rates, especially during times when handouts are unavailable.

Resist The Urge to Feed

Feeding wildlife can alter their natural behaviors and social structures. When animals gather in large numbers for food, it can lead to competition, aggression, and the spread of diseases. This can disrupt the delicate balance of ecosystems and lead to the decline of certain species or the proliferation of others, creating ecological imbalances.

Human Food Is For Humans

Furthermore, human food is often not suitable for wildlife and can cause health problems. Foods like bread, chips, and processed snacks lack the necessary nutrients for animals’ diets and can lead to obesity, dental

Life at The Great Outdoors has many benefits. An important one that many residents would rate high on their list is how the community is integrated with the wild Florida landscape—and that includes sharing space with wildlife.

issues, and digestive problems. Additionally, discarded food can attract predators or scavengers, further altering natural behaviors and potentially increasing conflicts between humans and wildlife.

Keeping Your Distance

Lastly, feeding wildlife can pose risks to human safety. Animals that become accustomed to human food may become

aggressive in their pursuit of it, leading to dangerous encounters with people. In tourist areas, this can result in property damage, injuries, and even the euthanization of animals deemed a threat to public safety. Overall, while the intention behind feeding wildlife may be good-hearted, the consequences can be detrimental to both the animals and the ecosystems they inhabit.

FROM THE (STILL NEW) EDITOR

PHEW!

WELL, I DID IT!

I made it through my first issue of The Happenings and no-one has asked me to stop. That means it’s time to hop in the pool with a celebratory beer.

In all seriousness the first issue went smoothly, thanks in large part to Tim Clark making sure I had what I needed and being available for about 50 questions at all time of the day and night.

Once the first issue was set it was off to the next. During this entire process of getting started, figuring out who the players are, understanding how TGO works, and developing new material I have been impressed (and grateful) for how friendly and helpful everyone at TGO is. This is a special community.

Thank you all for welcoming me so warmly. As I mentioned in this section last issue, please feel free to reach out to me with comments, requests, corrections, ideas, or anything else that you think might be useful/helpful/interesting.

Welcome to the New Age of Stretch!

Thanks to the modern sedentary lifestyle, after 30, most people start losing flexibility at an average rate of 1% a year. Strains and micro-stresses on your muscles compounded over time can glue them together. This “glue,” or scar tissue, tightens the surrounding tissue and restrains how you’re able to move. Over time, the snowballing loss of flexibility ages you. Stretch Zone’s isolation of individual muscles within a muscle group breaks up the glue, unwrapping the stranglehold on your posture and valuable energy. Proper stretching slows down the aging process. You will feel younger by improving posture, circulation, and increasing your range of motion.

66 THE HAPPENINGS

Funny Thing Is… Can’t Reason With The Seasons.

I have to fall over laughing when I hear someone complaining about living in Central Florida this time of year.

Complaining?

Highs every day in the high 70’s and low 80’s and I hear people say “Oh it’s too hot.” Oh yeah? So it’s better to have to follow a salt truck and snow plow to get to the store than to be working on your tan at the beach? Uh no.

But it’s so much better to experience the seasons they say. Really? Up north they sit shivering in the houses wearing what they call “layers” which makes them look like the Pillsbury Dough Boy in an ugly sweater contest because the sleet knocked out their electricity while we’re here in Florida trying to figure out whether to wear the open toed or thong style flip flops. Experiencing the seasons up north means waiting 6 months from early fall to late spring to see the sun again. In Florida we call the experience “sunrise” and it happens almost every day.

In Florida the only chance of slipping on ice is if it falls out of your margarita.

Why it’s so cold up north in February they don’t allow it to have more than 28 days most years just so we can get to Spring quicker. You know if experiencing the seasons is so great why do all the major league baseball teams flee the “frozen tundra”

of the Great White North to come to sunny warm Florida and Arizona? Oh yeah, it’s to be able to play their game. And when it is time to start their “season” up north the players look like snow men with baseball caps but that’s only if their opening games don’t get snowed out.

Same thing with golf.

Ever tried to putt in a snowbank? Ever tried to run the bases in 3 inches of slush? Not happening folks.

Tell me again about the seasons? And which kind of fireworks do you prefer watching. The incredible technological miracles of a rocket launch every week or the explosion of and iced over transformer? I just can’t reason with the seasons.

So if you’re here in Florida, stay and celebrate. You can head back north in the summer when the weather is LIKE FLORIDA!!! Let’s stop whining and start Wining with our Florida friends.

Cabernet or Chardonnay?###
