Eagle’s Pride Mike Thibeau

Potato, Potahto... here’s the story how a potato farmer from Maine ended up moving to TGO and buying Eagle’s Pride. It’s a great story... basically the American dream. Mike and his family moved here over 27 years ago when they purchased Eagle’s Pride from a guy named Ed Goodie. At that time, the business was only three years old, there was one employee and one single building. Today, as we all know, it has grown into quite a sizable business. Buildings and offices were added, new businesses were started, there were good times and slow times, but never bad times. Mike with his wife, Dane’t, built a successful family business. It’s a great story starting on page 26.

The New Happenings Editor

Thank God! We are finally getting rid of those obnoxious editors from The Happenings. You couldn’t go anywhere in TGO without those jokers sticking there noses into everything you did! “Stop... let me take your picture! Hold still! Don’t blink! Smile!” Well... you won’t have them to kick around any more. Enter Greg Wostrel, the new Editor of The Happenings. Greg is a very accomplished Art Director with a long list of skills that blend perfectly with the production needs of The Happenings. He is a talented designer, a terrific photographer and an all-around good guy. Greg will be taking over the helm starting with the April 12 issue, so, let’s roll out the welcome mat and greet Greg with the gusto that TGO is famous for! See page 15.

Kris Lee-Scott - A Great Example of Too Much Talent

There are many talented people who live in TGO and Kris Lee-Scott is one of the shining examples. Kris has traveled across the country and lived in several different states before settling in TGO. She has a strong musical background including learning to play the piano at age four. She composes her own albums, writes books, loves to photograph and make brochures. She is an Apple computer and iPhone guru, who helps the non-tech residents in the park with any issues. She also enjoys dancing and making crazy videos. Kris has lived here since 2001 and has amassed a lot of friends. Learn more about Kris on page 38.

Manager’s Corner

March 29, 2024

Dear TGO Community,

Today is Good Friday, and on behalf of the CSA staff, I wish you a Happy Easter with friends and family. The Blue Heron is offering Sunday Easter Brunch specials from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm for your enjoyment. The restaurant will close after the 2:00 pm seating on Sunday to allow our staff to enjoy the holiday with family.

Monday is April 1, April Fools’ Day, so this is the last issue of The Happenings to be edited by Tim and Cindy Clark, so there might, or might not be a few tricks in this issue, readers beware! It has been my pleasure working with Tim and Cindy these past two years, and I will take one more opportunity to publicly say “Thank You” for a job well-done. This issue also features an interview with Greg Wostrel, our new Happenings Editor. Greg and his wife Georgia live in Titusville, just a few miles away from TGO’s entrance. He is excited to join our team and represent TGO in this important role. If you’re a regular contributor to The Happenings, please be sure to meet all deadlines for submissions, and be patient with Greg as he learns the ropes. He will assume the happenings@tgocsa.com email effective immediately.

There are so many activities and events that have happened since our previous issue. Some of the highlights for CSA include: Twin Lakes hosting a hot-dog lunch for our CSA employes (Thank You, Twin Lakes!), a great week of MGA, LGA and CAN/AM golf play and events, a Firewise prescribed burn in the conservation area along our south boundary, the final Activities Committee’s concert, and finally a great turn out for Shred Day! Our Safety Committee volunteers were able to help 162 TGO owners through the line as we shredded 3,200 pounds of documents. It was great seeing so much support and participation during our 5th annual event. Thank you to Cindy Marini and all the volunteers who made it happen.

Forestry clearing on our golf course is underway in preparation for the renovation which begins in just two weeks. Our contractors are using heavy equipment to clear invasive Brazilian pepper growth along the perimeters of the course. If you live on or near the golf course, you will certainly see the ramping up and mobilization of equipment, workers and staged materials in preparation for the official start of renovation on Monday, April 15. Once renovation begins, you will see safety signs in place, asking everyone to stay off the course while it is under renovation. Thank you for adhering to all safety warnings and giving our contractors plenty of room to work safely. Also, those of you who back up to the golf course will be inconvenienced by the noise of construction progress. Most of the work will occur between April and July. The renovation construction teams have been instructed to operate only during our normal construction hours, which is 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, Monday through Saturday. If you have any concerns or questions during the renovation, please contact me directly and I will assist you.

This weekend I was playing tennis with friends in Titusville, and Ted and Tracey shared that it was their 33rd wedding anniversary today. I congratulated them, and they told me their wedding reception was held in the Plantation Manor in 1991. They were so proud to share they were the first wedding reception ever held in The Manor, which at that time had just opened. It got me thinking about how many special events, celebrations and memories have occurred within our Manor, and throughout TGO, over the last 30+ years. We certainly are a special place with a wonderful history of creating memories here in North Brevard.

Sincerely,

Sulfation, the accumulation of hard lead sulfate crystals, is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss in lead-acid batteries. Sulfate crystals can develop rapidly, preventing your batteries from accepting a full charge.

Over time, sulfation crystals rob battery capacity. As a result, the battery needs more charge more often with a shorter runtime. As sulfation increases, so does your need to replace your batteries. Desulfate to reduce costs.

Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

Check Your Golf Cart’s Brakes

Brakes that do not function will be your only excuse as to why you did not stop at a stop sign. Therefore, according to page 54 of our TGO’s Rules and Regulations of the road, you will be receiving a Tra c Citation for failure to obey a posted tra c sign.

Contractor Restrictions

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA.

From Monday through Saturday, contractors must leave TGO by 6:00 pm from October 1 to April 30 and by 7:00 pm from May 1 to September 30.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the process efficient, please follow these rules:

• Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed. Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up.

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Place trash within one foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch!

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowes SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc., that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowes on the same side of the street.

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

Gopher Tortoise Day in TGO

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has designated April 10, 2024 as Gopher Tortoise Day in Florida. They have been doing this for a number of years previously as the Gopher Tortoise is classified as a Threatened Species by the State of Florida.

In order to raise awareness of, and appreciation for, Gopher Tortoises, FWC encourages organizations to conduct public educational events on Gopher Tortoise Day. FWC also encourages counties, cities, schools, universities, wildlife organizations, communities, and other entities to adopt a Proclamation that expresses their support for the conservation of Gopher Tortoises, and to increase awareness of those found within their boundaries.

The Great Outdoors has a number of tortoises within the community, most of which are located at the Protected Gopher Tortoise Habitat alongside the paved Golf Cart Trail just north of Baytree Drive, and along the Nature Trail extending north from the Library. TGO NatureScape (along with support from the Nature Center, Firewise, and other community volunteers) has been working to improve the quality of the habitat at the Protected Gopher Tortoise Habitat. We have done a lot of work to remove invasive nuisance vegetation, and have plans to re-establish beneficial native plant species for the benefit of the Tortoises.

Please join us for a Public Educational Event on Wednesday, April 10 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the TGO Tortise Habitat

The TGO Board of Directors adopted this proclamation at the March 20 meeting.

Meet Eagle’s Pride Mike Thibeau

You never know what background story awaits when you sit down for a conversation with someone. Such was the case when we met with Mike Thibeau, the owner of Eagle’s Pride. His journey is truly remarkable and offers a great insight into the history of TGO.

“I was a potato grower in northern Maine for 17 years of our marriage. We’ve been married for 40 years. At that time, potato farming was getting really tough, there was a lot of new competition so I ended up buying the Bangor Daily newspaper during the harvest of 1996.

“It was a terrible harvest, the weather sucked, it was really bad. I was in farming with my dad and two brothers. I was in charge of all the equipment on our farm, which was 3000 acres in size, 1500 of those in potatoes and the rest were rotation crops.

“I was reading the newspaper I had bought and there was an ad for an RV store for sale, in Titusville, FL. I cut it out and put it in my wallet and a couple days later my brother came to me and told me he was done and was moving to Georgia. It was then I decided to call on the ad.

“Eagle’s Pride was three years old, it originated here in The Great Outdoors and was owned by a guy named Ed Goodie. TGO was only a couple years old at time and Ed had purchased a lot on Sunset Drive, he had a little trailer on it and repaired RVs. Jim Swann, who was the developer of TGO, went to Ed and asked him if he would move his repair business to a building if he built one for him. Ed agreed to do that and got one year of free rent. When he moved to the building he put in one and a half bays.

“I had called Ed and he had faxed me a financial statement which showed what he was paying his wife and himself. We were looking at it and I told my wife, Dane’t, that this could work for us. We drove down here in our ole’ potato-dirt covered truck. I still had my snow plow frame on the front of it. We met with Ed for 15 minutes.

“After we got back to Maine I called Ed and asked if he would hold the paper for us, but he turned me down. I asked several times, with the same result. Ed, by the way, was from Bangor, Maine, and that’s why the ad was in our newspaper.

“A month or two go by and finally I said to Dane’t that we really needed to pray about this decision. We prayed and the next morning I called Ed and asked him what we could do to make the deal work. He agreed to hold some of the paper and I called my wife to let her know we were moving to Florida.

“We arrived here on February 21, 1997. I worked for Ed until April of that year. At that point he was to give us 30 days of his time after we closed on the business, but when we got to the closing, Ed told us he had to go back to Maine to take care of his dying father. Dane’t and I looked at each other like deer caught in the headlights.”

“There was a guy working for Ed at the time, his name was Chad Hart and he was from Michigan and owned a company called Hart’s RV. Chad would work here in the winter and go back to Michigan in the summer. Chad took a liking to us and he helped us learn the business. Dane’t took over the bookkeeping, something she had never done, but she took to it like a duck to water. Chad helped me with everything else, and the business thrived and we made some money, which for a potato farmer from Maine was an amazing revelation.

“In 2004, a guy by the name of Shorty Crocker, who owned C & D Golf Carts, which was the building next to Eagle’s Pride, came to us and said he wanted to sell the golf cart store, so we bought it. That year the Club Car Precedent came out and we sold a lot of them until 2008 when the recession hit.

“Somewhere along this time, I asked to have more bays built. Larry McDaniels was the overseer of whatever project Jim Swann had going on, so Larry told me they would build me the bays.

26

“At the same time a guy named Tommy Purcell was running what is now our sales lot for Lazy Days and Bob Lee owned it. Tommy was one of the original owners here. He called me one day and told me I needed to own the sales lot. He said he was going to buy it, and hold onto it until I was ready to buy it, which we did in 2005.

“That’s when we started the consignment sales business. The sales were good, but 90% of the people who came in wanted to trade in something and I didn’t have the money to take in trade-ins. We went along for several years and through the recession, and over that time I had paid off Tommy for the sales lot. We eventually refinanced the sales lot and started taking trade-ins.

“In 2010 Bobby Rosenberger walked in and wanted to know what we were going to do with the golf cart store. By then, sales of golf carts had dropped off considerably. Three days later Bobby bought C & D Golf Carts from us and he stayed there for a year, then he moved over to the current location where GolfCarts Unlimited is now.

“Fixing RVs is intense, it’s not for the faint of heart. It’s not like a car where you can attach a computer and figure out what’s wrong.”

“We added another building in 2015, so now we have nine bays and added more employees. The sales lot has done well now that we take trade-ins. Last year we sold over 100 units through the sales lot. We have gone from one employee and buying all this property to where we are now with 17 employees. We went through some slow and hard times, but the last couple of years have been very successful for us.

“Fixing RVs is intense, it’s not for the faint of heart. It’s not like a car where you can attach a computer and figure out what’s wrong. With an RV, you’ve got to troubleshoot it. Our guys have been to school to learn troubleshooting, but each RV is different. You call the manufacturer and tell them what’s happening. They tell you to look here or there, then it’s not there because whoever was putting it together decided to put it somewhere else that day. There is no consistency in the RV world. The quality of an RV has not changed since I started 27 years ago. It has not gone to the good side.

“I’ll never forget when we had been in business for only a year or two, Lou Zawadzky came in with an old Allegro motorhome. He came in often, just to say hi. One day I was down in the dumps about someone being upset with me, and Lou said to me, “You think you’re going to please everybody all the time?” I’ve never forgotten it. I said I wanted to but he said I wasn’t going to be able to, it wasn’t going to happen.

“We strive to please everyone, but you’re just not going to be able to. We didn’t know about that part, coming from northern Maine and being potato farmers. Up there you do what you do and no one questions what you do.

“We have two sons, Josh and Justin and, a daughter. The boys are twins and were about 12 years old when we moved down. Our daughter Chelsea was eight.

“When the boys got out of high school, Josh stayed here and worked after school and worked in the shop. Justin went to Buford, GA and worked with my younger brother, where he groomed him to be a manager. But Justin didn’t like the area, so when we bought the golf cart store, he came back and ran it for us. When we sold it, my brother called to ask if Justin wanted to come back to Georgia and so he did until 2015, when he returned to Eagle’s Pride.

“It was very confusing for people when Justin came back and started working because everyone thought I was working Josh extra hard!

“20 years in I was getting burned out. I had Justin come work in the office with me and that was a good thing. I’m now taking time off and mostly what I do these days is look for RVs to buy, find deals, then Josh cleans them up, puts them on the lot and sells them. Now Dane’t and I travel in the summer, which we never thought we would be able to do. Last summer we went on a 6000 mile trip out west. We put the motorcycle in the back of the truck and towed it. We put 3500 miles on the bike last summer.

“Eleven years ago we found Boone, NC and bought a place at the Boone KOA that we go to. The family from Maine to Florida congregates at Boone. We’ve got a big summer kitchen on a deck with a big overhang. We ride motorcycles almost every day. It’s great.

“I got involved with motorcycles as a kid. When I met Dane’t in 1982 I had a Harley Sportster. We also snowmobiled a lot in Maine. I was the president of the snowmobile club back then. Continued next page...

“Ive always been a car guy and I bought my first car at age 14, a 1966 mustang for $200. I didn’t have a license so I hid it from my dad in his barn. He came in to the house and asked whose car it was. I told him it was mine and he said, “Either you take the car back, or you leave.” So I got in the car and I left. I went up the road about five miles and sat there and cried. Dad came and found me and asked what was so important about the car. I said, “I like cars.” He said, “Well, if you love cars that much, come on home and we’ll work it out.” That was my first experience with Dad not understanding my mechanical mind.

“A year into owning the car one of my schoolmates wanted to race me, and I knew I couldn’t beat him, so I went to the junkyard and got a V8 motor, and at 15 years old, took out the six cylinder engine and put in the V8. When it came time to race, I smoked him! Since I was 14 years old, I’ve probably had 250-300 vehicles. I just like cars. I like horsepower.

“I met Dane’t when she was 15 and I was 20. We got married at 22 and 17. Her parents had to sign for her. We celebrated our 40th anniversary in Estes Park, CO last

summer. Now we have five grandchildren, three from Chelsea and Moses, who also works at Eagle’s Pride handling all our tow set-ups. Josh and Jenna have two children. The boys are turning 40 this year and both still work in the business.

“We’ve had a wonderful life, through all the ups and downs. We’ve got faith in God, we attend the Grove Church in Titusville and even do a marriage class there.”

Happenings Around The Great Outdoors

Corn Hole is alive and well and you too can be part of the club by just showing up at the shuffleboard courts each Sunday at 3:00.

So where did this game get its disgusting name? Previously known as Outhouse Corn, it is believed that it originated in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, (not a surprise) in the late 19th or early 20th century. Back then the bags, as they are today, were filled with corn kernels but they used outhouse toilets instead of boards. After realizing it was always a mess to retrieve their bags, they came up with the idea to cut holes in boards instead and created a whole new game that is now a staple at tailgates, picnics, backyard gatherings...and TGO!

Trying to hang with...

Kris Lee-Scott

Kris’s journey began on the west coast in Oakland, CA, where at the young age of four, she displayed a remarkable talent for music, playing the piano and composing her own songs. By the time she turned 12, Kris could effortlessly sing the entire Handel’s Messiah from memory. While reading music posed a challenge, Kris compensated by learning to play the piano by ear. Her musical talents extended to playing the guitar and participating in various choral groups. Additionally, she found joy in drama classes and performances at school.

Yet, Kris’s story was not solely defined by her musical and artistic endeavors. Known for her vibrant spirit, she famously claimed, “I could party everyone else under the table.” It was December 5, 1975, that marked a significant shift in Kris’s life. On this day, she made the courageous decision to embark on a journey of sobriety, altering the course of her life forever.

Kris has never been short on talent. In 1976 she moved north to Marin County, CA and started her first business, “Photo Productions.” She honed her photography skills by becoming an MLS photographer, shooting for reality home brochures and eventually producing a HOMES & LAND magazine. Always remaining passionate about music and performing, Kris started Keyboard Keys, a sort of school of rock to help teach elementary students about music.

In 1986 Kris was asked to join a popular rock band, MINDZ EYE, where she rubbed elbows with many famous rock legends. She later performed melodrama at the historical Olde Coloma Theater. She wrote her own plays, cast and directed them to local sell-out crowds. All the while still dabbling in photography, shooting for American River Rafting Tours.

Kris took a bold step by purchasing her first house, sight unseen in 1992 when she relocated to Salt Lake, Utah. It was there she started writing songs, one about her leukemia-stricken Himalayan kitty “Kea.” Now prolific in eight different musical instruments, Kris recorded her first album where “Kea’s Song” was the lead track.

“In May 1992, I received the news that my beautiful Himalayan kitty ‘Kea’ was dying of feline leukemia. As I watched her deteriorate in pain, I felt an overwhelming need to tell her

how much I loved her, so I wrote ‘Kea’s Song.’ I went on to compose an entire album titled ‘Inspiration,’ filled with elegant and uplifting melodies. Crafted with the intention of soothing and comforting listeners, the album serves as a source of solace for the mind, body, and soul.”

Kris’s first cassettes were sold at local arts & craft exhibitions, but today all her music and albums can be found on Apple Music and iTunes.

Her first album became popular with spas and therapists, and was used as a tool to help their customers and patients relax by reducing heart rate and stress levels.

Next stop... Madison, WI. In 1994, Kris composed her second album titled “Serenity,” a lush, elegant ‘soundscape’ designed to take you away to far off places. Kris soon found herself immersed in the world of weekly craft shows, traversing the countryside in her trusty 35’ Winnebago Vectra.

Fast forward to 2001 when Kris relocated to The Great Outdoors with her mom who needed some assistance due to health issues. It didn’t take long before Kris became a valued volunteer within the community. Along the way, she became very experienced with Apple products and was soon teaching non-tech residents how to work their Mac computers and iPhones. It was then that she started her “MyAppleTechKris” business. We’re sure you have seen her blue golf cart traveling throughout TGO.

You’ll always find Kris at our TGO craft shows, displaying her collection of CDs that sell like hotcakes. She also wrote a book about “Palatka,” her Dingo dog who passed away after a long bout of cancer. “The Dog Who Wouldn’t Give Up” sold numerous copies inside TGO and is also available online (with a lot of Kris’s other creations). You can find them at krisleescott.com.

Just like the ever-ready bunny, Kris is always finding ways to keep charged up. She now hosts the TGO Dance Group that gathers and performs at our Pavilion, usually Thursday and Sunday nights - you can always find her posts on Facebook for the correct dates and times. Her videos are Craaaazy! Need help with your Apple products or photography for your real estate flyer to help sell your FSBO? Contact Kris at 321-243-4324.

Welcome to the New Age of Stretch!

Thanks to the modern sedentary lifestyle, after 30, most people start losing flexibility at an average rate of 1% a year. Strains and micro-stresses on your muscles compounded over time can glue them together. This “glue,” or scar tissue, tightens the surrounding tissue and restrains how you’re able to move. Over time, the snowballing loss of flexibility ages you. Stretch Zone’s isolation of individual muscles within a muscle group breaks up the glue, unwrapping the stranglehold on your posture and valuable energy. Proper stretching slows down the aging process. You will feel younger by improving posture, circulation, and increasing your range of motion.

Meet Jerry Irwin Meet Randy Sanford

Without question, one of the most favorite people to visit TGO is Jerry Irwin - The Ice Cream Man. I mean... who doesn’t like ice cream?!

Jerry’s now 56 and was born in South Carolina but has lived in Florida for 50 years. That dang near makes him a native Floridian.

Jerry started selling ice cream out of his truck in 2013. This is his second ice cream truck and he built this one himself. His first was totaled by someone who ran a stop light.

Just so you’ll know, being an ice cream man is a full time gig. Jerry puts in a solid day, and sometime night, Monday through Friday.

His route includes car lots, dealerships, and other businesses during the day, working one neighborhood each day, usually in the afternoons. In the evenings he visits apartment complexes and, of course, comes to TGO on Friday evenings.

Jerry gets his product from two distributors in downtown Orlando. One is for the soft serve ice cream and the other is for the packaged novelties. He keeps his product at his house in an 8’ x 10’ shed where he has three 6’ freezers, so he only has to visit the distributors about once a week.

His number one seller is soft serve, but this depends on the age of the people buying the ice cream. Adults love soft serve, shakes, sundaes; college students like the shakes; and kids want the novelties, so a lot of the neighborhood sales come from the novelties.

Jerry is married and has one son. He is an avid sailor, and owns a 27’ Catalina sailboat, so when he is not selling ice cream, you can find him on the water. He can also ride a unicycle, juggle and occasionally performs as a clown.

Watching Jerry ride his skateboard being towed behind a golf cart in our 2022 Golf Cart Parade was definitely one of those memories we won’t forget soon.... not to mention his vanilla/chocolate swirl soft serve ice cream.

Randy is one of those guys who likes to keep busy. In addition to his full-time job, he is the Condo 2 President, in charge of the TGO Corn Hole program, and king of seafood.

A transplant from Minnesota, Randy and his wife have been residents of TGO for about 12 years. If you are a reader of Facebook, you already know he has his hands into a lot of things. At his full-time job, Randy works for Ranger Construction where they recently completed the Brightline Rail project and are now working on Highway 417 - converting it to a three lane highway. Randy’s day starts out at 3:00 am and he is back in TGO about ten to twelve hours later, where he splits his time between being President of Condo 2, running the TGO Corn Hole and managing TGO Seafood.

His seafood gig has been up and running for about three years. He found a source that provides a quality product at a great price. It takes a simple call to place an order and Randy will deliver your order that day if he has it in stock or within a few days. He is fully certified by the state as a food handler and in full compliance with Florida state and local tax boards.

Randy also hosts three Seafood Fries a year - which are always well attended. A great place to spend time with your TGO neighbors and enjoy some awesome food.

Corn Hole has become a “Happening” each Sunday afternoon with organized games starting at 3:00 pm located at the shuffleboard courts. Randy provides the boards - some of which he had the Sawdust Club help build.

And for those who participated in the Can-Am golf tournament, you saw that Randy sponsored hole #17, providing prizes for the best corn hole throws.

His recent accomplishment was winning the election for Condo 2 President. Since then, he has helped many Condo 2 residents clean up their properties and bring them into compliance. With 277 properties in Condo 2, you can be assured, Randy will continue to be one busy guy.

First Line Of Defense - Home Fires By Ed Brown

Of Course, your first line of defense for home fires is PROPERTY MAINTENANCE. Remember LEAN, CLEAN and GREEN outside? Let us talk about fire inside your home or RV. You see smoke, you may smell smoke and you see flames! What are you going to do about that?

1. First of all, call 911! You will need Fire Rescue to back you up and to eventually Secure The Scene and assure that all the fire is out. If possible have another person make the call while you HANDLE EXTINGUISHING THE FLAMES. Have occupants of the home get outside.

2. I will assume this is a kitchen fire (most common). Put a Lid on the pot. Cut off the Oxygen: POOF the fire goes out (Wear a Kitchen Mitt to protect valuable skin).

3. Do not cancel the Fire Department. You may still need them!

4. If you have a kitchen Fire Extinguisher, use it, rather than searching for that pot lid. Keep the exit of the room behind you so you’ll know the way out. If smoke is heavy, GET OUT NOW! Stay low, below smoke and heat, Just Get OUT!

How do you use a Fire Extinguisher? Remember the acronym P A S S.

1. Find the extinguisher and remove the red plastic safety from the handle. PULL THE PIN

2. Aim The Nozzle at the base of the flames. AIM THE NOZZLE

3. Squeeze The Handle SQUEEZE HANDLE

4. Sweep The Chemical SWEEP CHEMICAL

Sweep right and left along the base of the flames. The dry chemical spray will last about 12 seconds. (That is enough time to slowly count to 12.)

5 . Exit the room/home, fill your lungs with clean fresh air and welcome the firefighting crew.

How do you store and practice using your kitchen fire extinguisher?

1. Keep Extinguisher visible: Wall Mount or Countertop, not hidden in a drawer or cabinet!

2. To fight an imaginary fire. Do not SQUEEZE to release the chemical. Just say “SQUEEZE."

Do this Drill once a month to practice and develop MUSCLE MEMORY. Home Fires can be scary, but a little thought and practice can put you and keep you in control.

Cut and Paste These Words On Your Extinguisher

Funny Thing Is… Aging Is A Scientific Mystery!

Aging Is A Scientific Mystery but you can also call it “Just Forget It.” I’ve been doing top secret scientific research for a number of years in an attempt to enhance the human experience and figure out why some inexplicable things keep happening to me. Sounds pretty official, doesn’t it? Well, for instance, my scientific research has shown that the older I get, the smaller the writing gets on those little teeny, tiny, itty, bitty papers they jam in the pill bottle. Also, I’ve discovered that scientists aren’t telling us that gravitational forces are increasing every year. How do I know? Well, my research has shown that since I passed 60, it gets harder every year to get out of my chair and, if that isn’t enough proof for you, my chest has sunk into my stomach. See? Gravity must be increasing. Pretty amazing stuff, huh? You’re not gonna believe this, but nobody else is doing this kind of research anywhere. Want to hear more? Of course you do. Research has shown that once you pass 60 it takes twice as long to look half as good. Also, have you ever gone to a professional baseball game or concert and noticed that people over 60 come an hour early and leave before it’s over just to avoid the crowds? And why do older people who know their bladder won’t last longer than 15 minutes still go for a ride in the country? These are great mysteries. I’ve also discovered that since I passed 60 friends are comfortable confiding secrets with me because they know I’ll forget what they said within the hour. You know, it’s easier to lie about my age now since I can’t remember what it is. Hey, it’s actually great getting senile. You’re always meeting new people. That renowned scientist/comedian George Burns identified the stages of memory loss as you age. “First you forget names. Then you forget faces. Then you forget to put your zipper up. Then you forget to put your zipper down.” Take it from me. I’ve seen it all, done it all, but I just can’t remember it all, I think. One thing I do know is when recalling my conquests when younger, each time I tell a story I become better than I was before. Yes, I never was the man I once was. Now, what was I talking about? -Dr. Sammy-
