Meet The Blue Heron’s Food and Beverage Manager

Say hello to Musa Alici, the new Food and Beverage Manager at the Blue Heron.

Musa, who has an extensive background in the restaurant industry, was born in Turkey and honed his skills throughout a a variety of restaurants in Europe. He has worked on cruise ships, created recipes and crafted new cocktails and has managed and own several restaurants over his 47 years in the food industry.

He is already reshaping the menu at the Blue Heron with plans to introduce a complete new menu in early November. We encourage all TGO residents to stop in and meet Musa... he’s always willing to talk turkey. See more on page 24

2023 Breast Cancer Golf Tournament

This was the 8th annual TGO breast Cancer Tournament and prooved to be another great success raising over $13,000 for the Jess Parrish Medical Foundation. All funds stay in North Brevard to help with diagnosis and cancer care. 120 participants enjoyed 18 holes of golf taking in the beautiful blue skys and refreshments provided throughout the course by the generous 18 sponsors. The golfers were broken into three flights. Steve Wright, Jack Miller, Cliff Creech and Ken O’Dea took first in Flight A. Kathy Myer, Beth Conyer, Maureen Legg and Denise Charpentier from La Cita Country Club won Flight B, and Susan Jensen, Coletta Gabele, Harold Gero and John Gero were on top in Flight C. Dear TGO Community, This is the Halloween Issue of The Happenings, so please don’t be frightened as you might find a few Goblins sprinkled throughout the issue. This issue also introduces you to Musa Alici, our new Food and Beverage Manager. Musa and the entire Blue Heron team are getting ready to serve you some outstanding food and service this season. We look forward to your feedback.

These past few weeks we have made investments in our community through training opportunities for our CSA staff. I’m happy to report that Mike O’Neal, Grounds Manager, and Carolyn Banke, HR Representative, completed a two-day Safety Leadership Academy in Orlando, FL. This academy trained them how to provide safety leadership to the CSA staff in topics such as accident prevention, workers compensation, accident investigations and safety audits. Recreation Manager Carmella Galley and four of her Recreation team members (Les, Scott, Gage, Danielle) completed the Certified Pool Operator (CPO) training.

I joined this team for training. We now have six CSA staff members who are state-certified to operate our pools and spas. Finally, Phillip Wolf, our Aquatics and Drainage supervisor, completed a certification in heavy equipment operations.

This past week our Board of Directors approved some changes to our Rules and Regulations regarding disposal of trash, organic yard debris and recycling in our maintenance yard. Details of these changes were sent out in the Chairman’s Notes last Friday, but I will summarize here: We’ve received many complaints about the safety and overall poor appearance of our trash collection area; therefore, the Board will not allow dumping of large bulk items onto the ground in the yard. If your garbage or debris cannot fit into the trash compactor or the courtesy open-top dumpster, then you must take those large objects to the county collection facilities located just a few miles away in Titusville. This rule change will be enforced through video-surveillance. CSA is reconfiguring the bins in the maintenance yard to support this change, and moving our vegetative debris pit away from the bins. The goal here is to clean up the maintenance yard and make it a more respectable reflection of our premier RV resort. You can find a complete list of the new rules on page 18 of this issue.

Finally, a quick update for those who look forward to using the Oak Cove bathhouse. This bathhouse was closed in September for renovation. We can expect this bathhouse to re-open on November 7. Originally our goal was to open mid to late October, but as with many projects, there was a delay with one of our contractors. Our countertop installer is telling us now that he is back on schedule for installation next week. We look forward to receiving your feedback on this renovation. I’ve peeked into this refreshed facility, and our buildings team has done a great job again!

Also part of the Board of Directors Organization are CSA Manager Billy Specht, Architectural Review Committee Chairman Leon LeBlanc and CSA Secretary Sharon Sanford.

The CSA website at www.tgocsa.org has individual biographies and contact information for each director.

Owners are encouraged to attend all the Board of Director meetings. Green speaker cards are available if an owner wishes to address the board for three minutes about any issue. An informational packet with the meeting agenda is given to each household that attends. Prior to the meeting, the agenda is posted on official bulletin boards. The board meeting is televised LIVE on channel 732.

CSA Board of Directors meetings are held on the third Wednesday from October through May. Planning meetings to set the agenda for the Board of Directors meetings are scheduled October to May on the second Wednesday of the month in the CSA Conference Room at 3:00 pm. They are open to attend for any TGO owner.

District Meetings

There are ten CSA voting districts at The Great Outdoors.

They are non-geographical, but are determined by the last digit in each property’s street address. The District Meetings are held monthly from October through May. Various districts join together to hold combined monthly meetings.

There are two meetings per month with five districts in each one. Please note the upcoming meeting schedule if you want to attend your district meeting. In the PAVILION: Districts 2, 3, 5, 6, 8 - Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at 10:00 am Districts 0, 1, 4, 7, 9 - Thursday, November 9, 2023 at 3:00 pm

Architectural Review Committee

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the next ARC Meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 15 at 10:00 am on the Manor Porch.

The Architectural Review Committee meets for planning purposes on the Plantation Manor Porch at 10:00 am on Monday, November 13, 2023.

All changes to your property that are visible on the outside require advance approval from the Architectural Review Committee. Application forms and ARC Guidelines may be obtained from the Community Services Association office or printed from The Great Outdoors Community Services Association website at www.tgocsa.org. All completed ARC forms must be submitted to the CSA office by Noon on the Wednesday before the next Wednesday meeting. Results will be available to pick up after the ARC meeting or from the CSA Office. Be sure ALL necessary paperwork is included with your ARC application. No approval will be given without having all the required data available at the ARC Meeting for review.

Emergency Vehicle Protocol

Florida and TGO share the same vehicle and traffic laws as the the rest of the US: Everyone must yield to emergency vehicles. If there’s no shoulder on the road, simply stop to allow an emergency vehicle to pass.

We have all been driving long enough to know this. Please, when you see emergency vehicles coming in with lights flashing, pull over and let them pass! It could be your loved ones they are here for.

Contractor Restrictions

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA. From Monday through Saturday, contractors must leave TGO by 6:00 pm from October 1 to April 30 and by 7:00 pm from May 1 to September 30.

Call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767 during regular weekday office hours to request any exceptions to these contractor work restrictions.

Community Information & Notices NEW - Trash, Organic Yard Debris and Recycling Rules 1. Household Trash a. Household trash is picked up from all Parcels daily except as published in “The Happenings” regarding certain holidays. b. Trash must be placed in plastic bags that are tied closed.

Lightweight bags should be tied together. Trash that is not in plastic bags may not be picked up. c. Trash bags shall be placed within one foot (1’) of any road, away from any obstructions that would make pick-up difficult. d. Trash bags must be put outside in the morning by 10:00 am.

Do not put trash out at night. e. All boxes that are included in the trash must be broken down and flattened. f. Call the CSA Office for special pick-up instructions for broken glass. g. Animal waste must be placed inside trash bags. h. Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or other materials. i. To deter buzzards or other wildlife from ripping open trash bags, put trash in black bags or place trash bags in a plastic bin. A few drops of bleach inside trash bags are also a deterrent. j. As an alternative to curbside pickup, trash may be taken to the CSA Maintenance Yard seven (7) days a week during posted hours. k. Shepherd’s hooks used to hold trash bags are prohibited.

2. Organic Yard Debris a. Organic yard debris is picked up from all Parcels at least once a week. b. Organic yard debris must be cut to a maximum length of four feet (4’), and each piece must weigh less than fifty (50) pounds. c. Organic yard debris must be stacked uniformly at the curb. d. Loose materials such as pine needles, leaves, cut grass and small twigs must be containerized in untied bags or open containers. Suggestion: Put your TGO address on the container if you want it returned. e. Organic yard debris is not picked up from vacant Parcels. f. Organic yard debris may not be mixed with household trash or other materials.

3. Trash – Other Materials a. Construction materials (concrete, wood, drywall, metal, plumbing materials, carpet, small appliances, and small furniture may be put in the open top dumpster in the maintenance yard. If you are not able to place such items in the dumpster for any reason, you must take them to the Brevard County disposal facility located at 3600 South Street (Rte. 405) in Titusville for disposal. DO NOT LEAVE SUCH ITEMS ON THE GROUND IN THE MAINTENANCE YARD.

b. Do not leave sod, dirt, tree stumps, and chemicals (paint, painting products, oil, etc.) toilets, cabinets, and mattresses at the CSA Maintenance Yard. c. These items must be taken to the Brevard County Mocking bird Way Mulching Facility, (321-264-5009) located on SR 405, or the Brevard County transfer Station, (321-2645048) located on SR 405. DO NOT LEAVE SUCH ITEMS ON THE GROUND IN THE MAINTENANCE YARD.

4. Recycling a. Recycling must be taken to the green recycling dumpsters in the CSA Maintenance Yard for disposal. Recycling is not picked up curbside at parcels. b. Recycling is “single stream” – sorting is not required. c. Only loose items (unbagged) are accepted by Brevard County for recycling may be placed in the recycling dumpsters in the CSA Maintenance Yard. Contact Brevard County Waste Management for specific information regarding recyclable items or check www.tgocsa.org d. All cardboard boxes must be broken down and flattened prior to being placed in the recycling bins.

5. Contractors a. Contractors must dispose of their own debris outside of TGO. Contractor generated debris includes, but not limited to, trees, brush, construction materials, and any other debris created by the contractor. b. CONTRACTORS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO USE THE CSA MAINTENANCE YARD for any waste disposal or leave debris in front of the Owner’s property for pick up by the CSA. (This rule includes residents/renters who run a contracting/lawn business in TGO). c. Owners may not dispose of a contractor’s debris in the CSA Maintenance Yard on behalf of a contractor.

Community Information & Notices Automated Visitor Call-In - 321-383-8802

The automated system offers two methods to provide access for a visitor. Call no more than 24 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival.

Send an email to: guest@tgocsa.org, no more than 48 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. The phone number and email address you use must already be registered with the CSA Office for the access request to be accepted. This system cannot confirm that your request was received or respond to any additional messages.

The CSA has a contract with Spectrum that includes Spectrum TV Select and Spectrum Internet services. If you are experiencing problems with their service or need to set up a new service, call the number above. Tell them your community at The Great Outdoors has a bulk agreement known as the Bronze Package.

Our television channel of the Community Services Association will be active for broadcasting board meetings. Your TV must be equipped with a Spectrum TV cable box or digital adapter.

Vehicle Barcodes

If your vehicle needs a barcode installed, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767 to schedule a REQUIRED appointment. Barcodes are $10 - new or replacement. They install them everyday, but will not do “walk-in” applications. If you need a barcode installed on your Recreational Vehicle, they’ll install RV barcodes on Fridays ONLY, and they want to visit your home or RV site to hopefully complete that barcode installation without moving your RV.

TruGreen regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects.

The application dates for 2023 are: November 20 & 21 TruGreen is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the TruGreen list.

TruGreen advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

Meet Musa Blue Heron's Food and Beverage Manager

The Blue Heron Restaurant has a new Food and Beverage Manager... say hello to Musa Alici!

When you first meet Musa, “gregarious” is the first word that comes to mind. He has a great gravely voice backed up with a big smile. He exudes confidence and it won’t take you long to learn that he has an extensive background in the restaurant industry.

Born and raised in Turkey with a Turkish mother and an Italian father, Musa’s very name means Moses. He’s got a remarkable 47 years of experience in the food and beverage world, dating all the way back to when he was just 11 years old, working during his summer breaks. He’s a globetrotter, having traveled across five continents, and has worked with some incredible people and corporations.

In his earlier years, Musa learned his craft at a variety of restaurants throughout Europe. He eventually came to America and landed in Boca Raton, where he served as a Dining Room Manager at one restaurant and then a General Manager at another.

His culinary journey eventually took him to the northern corner of the U.S. where he became a co-owner and operator of the White Rainbow Restaurant and Martini Bar in Gloucester, Massachusetts. “This was a beautiful full-service restaurant that seated 115 customers, including a martini bar,” Musa proudly explained. “I completed the design of the restaurant adding an upscale bar and patio, with an indoor waterfall that earned awards such as “Best Place to Kiss,” “Most Romantic Restaurant North of Boston” and “Wine Spectator Award of Excellence” for four consecutive years.”

Musa found his way back to Florida where he created an award winning franchise concept which he sold after two years. He then opened another restaurant in Vero Beach before finding his way to The Great Outdoors.

He’s a globetrotter, having traveled across five continents, and has worked with some incredible people and corporations.

Musa is a man of many talents. He’s skilled in recipe and menu development, crafting new cocktails, implementing restaurant operations manuals, creating employee training programs, and managing everything from food procurement to payroll. For a guy who started out as a line cook, he has gained a world of experience.”

Now, he’s set his sights on the Blue Heron and its patrons. “Right now, we are finalizing the new Blue Heron menu which I plan to roll out after November 10,” Musa shares. The new menu is designed with the preferences of our guests in mind, featuring pub fare and smaller Continued on page 42

The Best Seasonal Treats You Should Make For Your Friends The Best Pumpkin Bread

Prep: 15 minutes Cook: 1 hour 10 minutes Total: 1 hour 25 minutes Servings: 2 loaves

This is an easy, super moist pumpkin bread recipe made with an entire can of 100% pumpkin puree.

Wet Ingredients 5 large eggs 1 (15 oz.) can 100% pumpkin puree 1/2 cup canola oil 1/4 cup melted butter, unsalted 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed 1 tsp. vanilla extract Dry Ingredients 2 cups All-Purpose flour 1 cup white sugar 1 (5.1 oz.) package instant vanilla pudding mix 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. nutmeg Cinnamon sugar topping (optional) 1 Tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon

Candy Corn Smoothie

Directions Preheat oven to 325°F. Using a hand mixer, beat the eggs in a large bowl.

Add in the pumpkin, oil, melted butter, brown sugar and vanilla extract until smooth.

Mix the dry ingredients together in a medium bowl.

Gradually beat dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until incorporated.

Spray two 8.5 x 4.5 inch loaf pans with non-stick baking spray.

Pour batter into prepared pans. Sprinkle the top with a cinnamon & sugar mixture if desired.

Bake for 65-70 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool slightly before slicing and serving. Store in the refrigerator.

The Roof Over Your Head

It’s True. Shed roofs, home roofs, RV roofs and all styles of roofs. They all are exposed to the weather. They all have the potential for leakage from rain or snow melt. Often that potential is obvious to the cursing homeowner. Sometimes it takes a good leak detective, also called a roofer, to track down the source of the leak. Often, where it is dripping on your new sofa, is not below the leak in the roof. It can be a maddening situation and well worth the cost of hiring a good roofer to track it down and fix it.

Now, roof leaks often put water in contact with electrical wires in the roof, walls, attic floor and appliances. Wires are waterproof, but they are ever so attractive to rodents (rats, squirrels and bats) with big appetites for electrical wire insulation and big families.

Fire Prevention Week was one week in October. All of October is National “Fire Protection Month!”

With that in mind, we should focus on your home’s most fire-prone area during a wildfire. Surprise, it’s your roof! The culprit this time is not sneaky critters, it is roof trash.

Sparks and ignited debris on roofs can be lifted and carried to gutters packed with leaves and to “roof valleys” anywhere the roof lines change. So, the periodic cleaning of gutters and dried tree trash is another maintenance chore. Even replacement of damaged roof vent screening to keep sparks and racoons out would be a Firewise use of your time.

Home roofs come in several types: 1. Asphalt Shingle: This is the most common and the least expensive roof covering. I have seen the shingles stripped from a roof by winds of far less than hurricane velocity (75 mph). Life expectancy for a new shingle roof could be 15 years. There are few original construction shingle roofs in TGO that have not ever been replaced!

2. Architectural asphalt shingles: life expectancy 15-20 years.

3. Metal Roofs can last 20 to 50 years.

4. Tile Roofs can still be effective after 50 years.

If planning to re-roof, get at least three quotes from roofers in your area. Beware of out-of-area contractors! Check with your neighbors for feedback on their recent re-roofing experiences. Ultimately you will be comparing the cost, the life span of the new roof, the fire resistance and the resistance to animal-caused damage.

You can expect exciting new dishes, daily soups, and we will even be introducing a children’s menu.” Musa understands the balance of ordering enough and not too much, all while providing a menu that will hopefully appeal to everyone. He understands how to utilize his ingredients in many different ways so that waste as well as inventory is minimized.

Musa is currently looking for a few more employees for the kitchen and is working with our current wait staff. “I am a big believer in education, continued Musa. “The more our staff knows, the better our customer’s dining experience will be.” He wants the staff to become more knowledgeable about the food, having them taste the daily specials so they will be able to explain them to the customers.

The conversation changed to the overall appearance and atmosphere of the Blue Heron. As you know, it’s fairly drab with undecorated gray walls. “I can see some beautiful, nostalgic black and white prints on the walls,” says Musa. “Some classic prints of vintage golf photos, some tennis shots and, of course, nature images. We have a lot going on in The Great Outdoors and our restaurant would be a great place to showcase these activities.”

Funny Thing Is… Dentists Are Nothing To Smile About

Visiting the dentist is nothing to smile about. Oh, the doc and the staff are very nice and, if it was just a visit, I would enjoy it so much more. When you walk in the office you are greeted by a lovely young receptionist with a perfect smile, of course, and immediately you are put at ease. You check in, have a seat but you notice that everyone else in the waiting room looks like they just received an audit notice from the IRS. NOBODY is smiling. Then you hear the high pitched whine of a small drill in the other room. Now you look like the IRS is after you, too. Even if you’ve never sat in a dentist chair, your natural reaction to the sound of that drill is, “Oh, this can’t be good.”

You’ll find out in a few minutes that’s so true. But first you must be pleasantly greeted by the attractive hygienist, also with a perfect smile. Don’t get too comfortable. She may like you but this is not a date. Unlike that former plus one that used to torture you during your time together, this one will do it with weapons. You can’t help but notice the little metal tray with all kinds of pointy razor sharp tools. Uh oh. For the next 30 minutes you try not to wince, whine, or sweat, but you’re only so strong. That lovely young girl now feels like a middle linebacker busting you in the mouth. Ouch! You’re so relieved when you hear the words “all done,” but the fun has just begun. The next room has a tray with even more weapons including more than one of those drills you heard before. Now you have two or three people attacking, one of them being the doc who also has a perfect smile. I’m not falling for that anymore. I know this is gonna hurt. You think that drill sounded bad?

When they press it to your teeth your whole head vibrates. I guess that’s to loosen the rest of your teeth so you’ll come back to visit again. Then you hear the words again, “all done.” Whew, thank God. But, as if you haven’t suffered enough, there’s just one more thing. On the way out you’re given a bill that could have covered your next car payment. Man, I can’t wait to be invited back for my next visit! NOT! - Dr. Sammy -

Skunk Ape VS Deep within the impenetrable, sweltering swamps of the Florida Everglades, a legend looms large - the Florida Skunk Ape. The Sunshine State harbors more than just its share of mysteries, but few tales are as pervasive and unsettling as that of the Skunk Ape. It is a creature that has captured the imagination of locals, researchers, and thrill-seekers alike.

The legend of the Florida Skunk Ape reaches far back into the annals of indigenous and regional folklore. The Seminole and Miccosukee tribes, who have called the Everglades home for centuries, recount tales of a monstrous, ape-like creature inhabiting the inhospitable wilderness.
