Chih-Yi, Kuo received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Chung Yung Christian University in Taiwan. After few years full time working to accumulated practical experience in architecture ďŹ rm. Currently, he started the M.arch II program at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc).

After graduating, he took up a position with Liren Hsiao and Associates in Taipei,Taiwan, where he worked as an architecture designer involved in all aspects of the design process, from initial schematics to budgeting, gaining valuable experience. Those projects he worked on saw involved in landscape planning for public facilities, working to integrate architecture and the environment.

Architecture, to him, is a tool for bringing together people and their environments, as well as being a valuable entry point for trying to understand other cultures.

By cultivating his architectural knowledge and pursuing practical experience through the SCI-Arc’s program, he will be better equipped to create such spaces.

Replica Design Studio FALL 2016 DS 1200 ( 2GAX ): Instructor: Herwig Baumgartner Team: ChihYi_Kuo, Minah_Kim This studio will interrogate the potential of the r​eplica in architecture.

Advancing recent debates regarding influence, affinity and appropriation in architecture, we will adopt an approach that exploits the potential for architectural ​acts of appropriation to engender new forms of authenticity and to challenge context and type within an architectural project. Quotation as a postmodern form of referencing an ‘original’ and subsequent forays into sampling including kitbashing and the mash-up are various forms through which appropriation has surfaced in architectural discourse and practice. A more contemporary notion of the replica ties it to the status of the object in architecture and its inherent potential to engender multiple and coexisting forms of legibility; raising ​questions of scalability ranging from the ​colossus to the ​miniature. This approach involves the selection of copies (​found objects) instead of the creation of originals.

Throughout this process, chair’s leg structure remained as core for the building and some of the pipes went through inside of the pillow and made void space in the middle.

In case of designing outer surfaces of the building, pillow surfaces divided into few small surface and interacting with pipes. For the shaping its form, pipes are pushing surfaces hard and some of them ul-timately engraved their traces on the surfaces. Because of this attemmpt, each surfaces has raised volume and which created hilighting relationship between pipes and spherical outer surfaces.

Texture and brise-soleil of the building created from deformed images from the Processing. Some sur-faces applied as full colored one and some of them has half washed out which enables each pieces look more smoothly connected with eachother. GREEN HOUSE

FRP CLADDING PANELS FRPs used to reinforce and strengthen structures are extremely strong, up to eight times stronger than typical reinforcing steel. FRPs used for internal reinforcement and strengthening of structures use synthetic fibers in a polymeric matrix to provide excellent tensile strength in the direction of the fibers.

Members can be customized to different shapes with low lifecycle costs. It contributes to the texture quality as how it is designed.

SHOTCRETE WATERPROOFING Shotcrete is commonly applied to a blind-wall form and there is no access to apply a membrane. Membranes that are hung on the form and shot against risk damage and/or torn seams. Membrane installation adds time and money. It is difficult to reliably waterproof around pipes and other penetrations. Shotcrete is known to shrink and crack more than cast-in-place.

STRUCTURE PIPE This variation of the framed tube consists of an outer frame tube, the “Hull�, together with an internal core. The Hull and core act jointly in resisting both gravity and laateral loading.

CENTER ALTRIUM

UNITIZED WINDOW SYSTEM It has verious ways to fix and provides with fresh air and light. It meets the demands of the verious shapes of the windows as it is designed.It is used for the rich surface textures that can be achieved with relatively soft materials applied to a continuous supporting substract. This method does not provide the sharp lines and flat surfaces associated with rainscreen panels or composite panel construction. There are three fixing methods for continuously supported sheet metal walls: continuous sheet, lapped tiles and recessed joints.

STRUCTURAL STEEL FRAME Steel I-sections and flat sections are used to create a diagrid mesh that acts as a support for the FRP panels above. The steel support system acts as a form active system and partially holds its own weight. It is additionally supported on ground.

DESIGN OF CITIES VERTICO Studio FALL 2017: Instructor : Peter Trummer Team : ChihYi_Kuo, Song_Qiu This course will explore the mutual influences of ideas of theories of city design and planning, and practices of urban design, construction, and management.

We will use one of the masterplans to study there characteristic, and find out three different building has the same characteristic. By rebuild, those three constructions by projection and coincidence. We can recreate the masterplan with the same feature. To create a new kind of the master plan.

The shape of Knowledge Spring 2017 : Complex Morphologies Instructor : Elena Manferdini Team : ChihYi_Kuo, Langaojie_Ma

The SCI¯Arc_hive provides an opportunity for students to read, interface and reflect.

Our proposal aims to support the idea of the library and rethink the convention of the archive. The SCI¯Arc_hive tends to play a greater role in the school than that of a mere store of books & models: the key intent is a shared space for concept, idea & innovation. The library will also act as a new urban phenomenon bridging LA’s public with the ethos & mission of the school. Same to the model tower, the garage is automatic for drivers to park their vehicles, and the parking is also an exhibition area, which shows the advanced design of SCI¯Arc. The transparent model tower attracts people come to new SCI¯Arc building and know about architecture learning and study. Automatic transported system in the model tower also helps people research model easily and offers communication opportunities for students and public.

The pioneering spirit and advanced methodologies of SCI¯Arc will be made available to the public to provide teaching programs & workshops where public & private zones may exist. In the future, architectural & design education may become more customized, which means citizens need to be well versed to join the design discussion.

The class frames its object of study through the possibilities of a sectional approach. The primary mode of design and representation is the cut-away axonometric drawing -and the sectional model, its analogue material incarnation. These modes of dissectible analytical representation will tend to produce a sectional object of compelling spatial simultaneity, of which its purpose and merits lies in concurrently presenting the interior and exterior of the building alongside the pochĂŠ that separates them. The seminar culminates with each group reformulating their initial tectonic conjectures so as to adapt to a slightly altered design scenario. In re-informing the origins of the work, the class intends to search for a novel set of formal, geometrical and technological associations so as to yield a new tectonic coherence.

64 To produce the tower’s wavy skin in a cost-efficient process, the facade concept is based on a flat, uninitialized curtain wall with a back-ventilated rain-screen cladding attached to its front. The curtain wall geometries were rationalized into three types of geometries—standard flat panels, moderately shaped panels, and highly shaped panels. CONTAINING VOLUME Visual Studies SPRING 2018 VS: Instructor: Kristy Balliet Team: ChihYi_Kuo, Israel Guevara Sanchez containing of volume. Volume will be explored in relation to complex digital form and developed between physical and virtual space. The workflow will rely on design agility and decisions made in rapid succession across multiple mediums in order to subvert convention. The seminar will focus on the architectural topics of gesture, projection, and volumetric layering to create interiors larger than their exteriors. A concept of fullness will be explored through a designed contamination between three dimensional drawing, flat modeling and virtual reality. We will challenge convention by drawing on edges, modeling the in-between and stepping in and out of reality.

Throughout the semester we will flip flop between modes of drawing and modeling and their impact on the production of lines, volumes and surfaces. Surfaces will be inflated and animated, lines will be drawn in two and three-dimensional virtual space. Precision and abstraction will be used to produce multiple effects between actual and perceptual interiors and exteriors of an object. The designed volume will elude visual containment to create multiple simultaneous interiors.

FALL 2016 4200 ( 2GAX ): Visual Studies 1 Instructor: Kristy Balliet & Casey Rehm Team: ChihYi_Kuo, Feng_Wang

The course will cover issues of contemporary representation and the development of splines in relation to complex digital form and physical and visual space. Visualization today encompasses the development, exploration and communication of information and ideas in multiple mediums.

The course will engage recent techniques related to splines, gesture interfaces and virtual reality. The course will develop critical visual literacy and review methods for generating and evaluating lines, surfaces and volume. We will review modes of drawing and modeling in three dimensional space, including the importance of precision and abstraction.

Exercises and associated tutorials provide opportunities to discover novel concepts through transformation and tactical work flows. Finally the course will foster the development of architectural character. You will be expected to develop expertise and execute your intentions with clarity.

The Gestural Line Exercise 1 The first project will require the generation and design of lines through gestural animation. You will create a series of lines in space and then redesign their relationships and qualities. The initial digital models will engage two different techniques. The first model will be the result of the animation of lines in Maya and the second model, the generation of lines with through the use of a gesture tracking application.

Evolution Both models will use an imaginary bounding box. The project will develop by evaluating and modifying the quality of the model in both digital and physical form. We will review modes of drawing and modeling in three dimensional space, including the importance of precision and abstraction. The character of a final model that is vessel-like will be designed and built by every team. The vessel should be open in at least two places. You will be expected to develop expertise and execute your intentions with clarity.

The Agency of Images Exercise 2 The agency of images will explore how composition and aesthetics can be rethought by stripping the digital image to itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s base components, the pixel, and regenerating new compositions purely through defining the relationships of those pixels to each other.

Texture-Processing The project will explore how ubiquitous image processing algorithms and methods which continuously mediate our contemporary visual experience can be opened up as a design territory for architects.

By treating the pixel as material with itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own agency and constraints, students will also test the relationships between synthesized material and form through texture mapping.

These techniques will allow us to restructure and rethink the formal relationships between spline and surface explored in project one at the micro level. It will allow us to test how the micro-manipulation of material can force visual transformations of form either subtle or violent.

The Gestural Volume Exercise 3 The gestural volume will explore the potential and differences of the stroke, the gesture and the profile, this time within the space of Virtual Reality. This exercise will challenge the prioritized view of the designer, working outside in, and instead ask that you design a volume around you, within an immersive environment. You will continue to develop a control and sensibility for repetition, erratic character, structural integrity, whimsical moments and elegant form.

Building on the trajectory of software such as, TiltBrush, a program that allows you to paint in virtual space, we will use a combination of the HTC Vive and beta version of Second Studio.

CODING FORM Visual Studies FALL 2017 VS 2512: Instructor: Satoru Sugihara Team: ChihYi_Kuo introduces computational design mindset and provides versatile computation skills through various Grasshopper plug-ins and Gh Python coding. Students are not required to have prior experience in computation but expected to learn logical way of thinking, numerical sensibility, mathematical and geometrical curiosity and comprehension of coherence and articulated diversity in complexity. The seminar starts with quick introduction of regular Grasshopper for beginners and then move on to work with various Grasshopper plug-ins including LunchBox, Weaverbird and Kangaroo. In each session, students are expected to understand each toolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strength, weakness and a certain type of tendency of design works generated from it. After that, the seminar teaches basics of coding in Python such as variables, iterations and conditioning.

Then it goes through various general computational algorithms and algorithms for 3D vector operation and geometric manipulation on Python coding on Grasshopper to acquire fundamental understanding of computation. Students also learn geometric techniques and algorithms of polygon mesh subdivision in Gh Python to have understanding of recursive logic, scale-differentiated layers of design operations, and emergence of complexity through deepening recursive iterations.

Fake Facades Graphic Facades for Contemporary Architecture Spring 2017 VS 2594 01 ( 2GBX ): Instructor: Ryan Tyler Martinez, Shawn Rassekh Team: ChihYi_Kuo, Langaojie_Ma

This course is in response to the recent US political elections. According to critics, the use of graphic design during the 2016 campaign and its ability to misrepresent information and truth through fake news, image making and exaggerations contributed to the spread of mass communication of information that over time changed the definition of those subjects’ correctness.

During the post-2008 US election, Alejandro Zaera Polo wrote an essay in Log 17 titled, The Politics of the Envelope. This course is a prequel to similar notions of the building envelope and its role as a political tool in modern architecture. More specifically, we will focus on further developing “spherical envelopes” as a surface problem for contemporary practice. We will investigate an effective link between architectural graphics (2D images of windows, doors, textures, finishes, etc.) and architectural elements (geometry, corners, structure, shadows, form, etc.) through the making of Fake Facades. The ultimate aim of the course is to produce a conversation, through renderings and animations, around the use of images as a political tool within the built environment.

The old tree and the temple courtyard are located at the western entrance. The meandering street full of people on the weekends and holidays is just like a river of history with strong cultural atmosphere.

In this case, we try to use the grass to cover the construction. In addition to reducing the amount of somatosensory outside, and shape Jing-mei River through the mountains of Wen-shan pit terrain imagery. And the kindergarten is under the shape, after the class, kids can exercise and play around in the landscape park.
