Foreword: Stuart Ward Having enjoyed being a member for only 8 of the 50 years so interestingly recorded in this book, I am of the view that we, the members, are all part of something special. Snapshots in time, drawn from the past and present must and will be preserved as record for future golfing greats, and not so greats, to build on the history that is Dunnikier Park Golf Club.

Our 50th Anniversary coincided with significant works being carried out on the course and within the clubhouse. These works renew the foundation that will enable further shaping and improvement over our Club’s next fifty years. It is an investment that will pay dividends in the continuing successes that we all enjoy.

The strength of our Golf Club comes from the variety of members – past and present – who are happy to volunteer and get involved in the many tasks necessary to keep such a vibrant and busy club going. It is the differences of our members, and the mix of characters, that has always been the lifeblood of this exceptional, friendly, challenging and rewarding club, some of which is captured in the pages that follow.

To serve as the Club Captain through this auspicious year was a privilege and a pleasure that I enjoyed from the first event to the final party. The organisation, support and delivery of the programme of events was a testament to the band of dedicated volunteers, club council members and club staff who all have the best interests of Dunnikier Park Golf Club at heart.

I hope you enjoy reading this book, and that the photographs from our history and our 50th anniversary year celebrations will evoke happy memories and stand as our contribution to the Club’s snapshot in time for our future golfing generations.

Introduction Around December 2010, thoughts began to drift towards 2013, the Club’s 50th year. I had served one further year, following my 3 years as Club Captain, and my thoughts were turning towards retiring from the Club Council.

I was asked if I would consider staying on the Club Council to coordinate the Club’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. It was an offer I simply couldn’t refuse given my passion for the Club.

The planning of the 50th celebrations was undertaken by a dedicated group of members, who met with me on a monthly basis from Spring 2011 right through to the last few days before the start of the celebrations. I am extremely grateful for their support in delivering a programme of events that fitted the occasion and were enjoyed by many.

Our 50th Anniversary celebrated ‘the past, the present and the future’. This Review reflects that theme, by capturing memories from the Founder and other members who can still recall the early years, through to current members with recollections of more recent events. It captures the extremely emotional moment when Jim Bousie miraculously won nearest the hole, and the story behind it – demonstrating the spirit of Dunnikier.

The Review does not detail the Club’s golfing history. Thanks to Gordon Meldrum, the Club’s former Match Secretary, the Club has albums holding extracts of press-cuttings and pictures covering the golfing side of the Club.

These have since been scanned and are available electronically.

I would like to record my special thanks to Founder members, Peter Williamson, Arthur Jobson, Eddie Sherry and Stan Gibson for their conversations with me to share their memories. Sadly, Peter died earlier this year, a few weeks short of his 100th birthday – but it is fair to say he enjoyed a hearty meal and a dram at the Founder Members’ dinner on 28th June, 2013.

I have enjoyed pulling this information together and trust it will be an interesting read for our members.

Dysart Golf Club Dysart Golf Club was founded in 1897.

The course sat close to the grounds of Dysart cemetery (picture right). Street names such as ‘The Fairway’ and ‘The Hallows’ are still there today, marking the spot where Dysart golf course once stood.

The course and clubhouse, pictured below, sat on land owned by Rosslyn Estates. Kirkcaldy Town Council compulsory purchased the land around the 2nd World War for social housing.

In doing so, the Council gave their commitment that Dysart Golf Club would have the playing rights over the next golf course to be built in Kirkcaldy.

After losing the course, except for a fairway and a green, Dysart Golf Club continued for a few years as a social club.

Dysart Golf Club: Some interesting facts 

Founded 1897.



Mr Andrew Forrester, chemist, was appointed captain of the Club.



A 9-hole, good, flat, interesting course of 2,732yds with a SSS and Par of 70.



The licensed clubhouse had catering facilities and was close to the town.



The station at Dysart was 1 minute away. Local hotel was the Royal.



Sunday play was not allowed.



In 1906, visitors’ fees were 6d a day, 2/- a week, 5/- a month, 10/- for 3 months and 15/- for six months.



In 1914, there was a membership of 150. There was no entry fee. Subs for gents were £1/1/0, ladies 7/6d, and boys under 18 years of age 7/6d.



In 1922, membership was 200. Visitors’ fees were 1/6d a day, 6/- a week and 12/6d a month.



From 1936 to 1949, club membership was 250.



Dysart Golf Club had disappeared by 1951.

By December 1962, there were only 3 members left in Dysart Golf Club. Before it closed for the last time, the Secretary asked Arthur Jobson and his father-in law, John Erskine (East End Cottages, Coaltown of Wemyss) to pick one of the three trophies left. John Erskine’s choice was the Windmill Tower Trophy, even though it was looking the worse for wear. John arranged and paid 8 guineas for the complete restoration of the trophy. The restoration was undertaken by John Wright, Cabinet Maker, Maria Street Kirkcaldy.

When the restoration was complete, the trophy was held in safe custody by Arthur Jobson, 42 West March, Street Kirkcaldy, It sat on his side-board until such time as the clubhouse at Dunnikier Park was completed – approximately 5 months later. It was accepted on Dunnikier Park Golf Club’s behalf, by Stan Gibson. Due to 1963 being a short season, the Windmill Tower Trophy was not played for until 1964, when it was won by John Beveridge.

The Windwill Tower Trophy remains the only connection with Dysart Club. A windmill once stood on Dysart’s grounds so it provides a fitting reminder of the Club. Most of Dysart’s other trophies were donated to local schools, boys brigades etc.

Dunnikier Park Golf Course The Oswald girls who lived in Dunnikier House gifted the land for the golf course to the people of Kirkcaldy. The course was designed by golf architects, John Strutt from Paisley.

The 18-hole design allowed for an internal 9-hole course, but the 9-hole extension was later knocked back by Kirkcaldy Town Council in 1968, mainly due to lack of money.

When constructing the course, Kirkcaldy Town Council also built locker rooms, toilets, an upstairs lounge and a kitchen which has since been transformed into an annex to Dunnikier House Hotel.

Members of Dysart were offered the tenancy of the course but they did not take up that offer. However, a few Dysart members did join Dunnikier; Peter Williamson being one of them.

The course was formally opened on 5th May, 1963 – Cllr. Harry A. Nicholson, Kirkcaldy Town Council’s Parks Committee Chairman struck the first ball off the tee. The ball was a Dunlop 65, which is currently held on display in the Club’s trophy cabinet.

The opening was marked by a Pro-Am, between 2 amateurs and 2professionals: Ronnie DBM (Right Down the Bloody Middle) Shade (professional), Sandy Saddler (amateur), Fred Bullock (professional), and Bobby Walker (amateur).

It is rumoured that Arthur Mountford, sports presenter, was invited to play but refused when he was not chosen to play with one of the professionals, hence no television coverage! The match was halved (scorecard below).

The first Open tournament was a bit of a disaster. Returning players were more concerned at the balls they had lost, rather than their scores. The rough, whilst picturesque, was manicured ‘wheat high’ which proved problematic for wayward shots. The lesson was quickly learned with action taken to reduce the troublesome rough. The Golf Club offered to take over the manicuring of the course but this was knocked back by Kirkcaldy Town Council.

An early sign of the quality of the course was Fife Golfing Association’s request to play the Fife individual 36-hole championship at Dunnikier in 1969. The winner was Jim Farmer (St. Andrews) with a 75, 69. Jim later turned professional and is currently Honorary Professional at the R&A.

Dunnikier Park Golf Club It was not long after the municipal course opened, that Charlie Burke (the course’s professional green-keeper), described as a fun-loving, helpful person encouraged Stan Gibson, Eddie Sherry and Mr Foggo to form a Club/Committee. Charlie’s advice was invaluable, as everyone else were working guys who really did not know how to run a golf club. The main intention behind starting the Club was to gain handicaps to enable members to play competitions on other courses.

Members of Dysart Golf Club were invited to come and join/merge with Dunnikier Park Golf Club. However, that never happened for a number of reasons, mainly because by that time members of Dysart Golf Club were in their 70’s. Dysart Golf Club was dissolved soon after their officials decided not to make the move to Dunnikier.

Dunnikier Park Golf Club was constituted in June 1963 after getting formal approval from the Scottish Golf Union and Fife Golfing Association. On 30th June a meeting was held by those who used Dunnikier and from that a six-man committee was elected. Eddie Sherry, appointed Secretary on the first committee, recalls waiting a few months after the course opened for Dysart to come up to Dunnikier – ‘However, when they didn’t we decided to start our own Club’.

The Club’s Surviving Founding Members There is no known record of the Club’s first 30 members. The Club’s membership register was first pulled together in 1964 – 125 members.

The Club currently has five surviving founding members, who have maintained continuous membership since then: Tom Guild (the first registered member of Dunnikier Park Golf Club) John Chalmers Arthur Jobson Eddie Sherry Brian Mustard William Kerr (Kel) Smith, died 22nd March 2013 Peter Williamson, died 6th January 2014.

The First Committee Meeting The first committee meeting was chaired by Jimmy Smith (Kel Smith’s father). The meeting covered areas such as the Club’s committee structure and finance, with Jimmy taking the minutes. The notes were taken on a school jotter (something to do with Jimmy working in Fife’s education service!)

The Committee members agreed to pay ten shillings (10/-) towards prizes and membership.

Jimmy paid £5. No wonder then that the last of the big spenders from Cardenden was automatically Chairman!

The name of the Club was also discussed and Stan Gibson takes great pride as it was himself that suggested that ‘Park’ should be included in the name as he thought it gave a more uplifting, grander description of the Club.

The First Prize-Giving The first prize-giving was held in Barry Ostler’s Workers building now the Beveridge Park Hotel, in Forth Avenue, Kirkcaldy.

The Golf Clubhouse Dunnikier House (now the hotel) had been purchased

by Kirkcaldy Town Council in 1944. However, it had sat in ruins for some years and latterly was used by Fife Fire Brigade for training purposes.

As a Club, the Committee considered the purchase of the building - £3,000. However dry rot was prevalent and the price was outwith the resources of the Club, at that time. Dunnikier House then stood empty for a long time before it was eventually purchased by Messrs Hubbard and Cruickshanks who converted it into a hotel.

Dunnikier’s first clubhouse was a pre-fabricated medway hut, which still forms part of the club’s building structure. The original 6 or so trusses have been extended over the years, and the cedar skin has been covered up with external face brick.

The clubhouse was later extended by adding a restaurant, following the purchase of land from Kirkcaldy Town Council. Money was tight – the construction was financed by a £30 levy on members, but the Club could not afford much furniture for the restaurant. Little did Kirkcaldy Town Council know that the Club borrowed tables and chairs from the tea room above the Council’s locker room for when visiting parties came to the Club, replacing them before anyone found out!

The Club was later refurbished in 1987 and formally opened with a cocktail party.

Club Membership In the early days, there was great demand for another Club in the town and Dunnikier developed rapidly. Membership was never below 200.

Councillor Alex McLean is remembered as bringing considerable benefit to the Club in speeding up and resolving the many difficulties that arose in the formative years. Alex’s pal, Harry Gourlay was also a member. Harry did not play much golf as he spent much of his time in London, as a Member of Parliament, but he too was very helpful in shaping and supporting the Club.

The early years of the Golf Club were described as happy, with great fun. Prize-giving included giving booby prizes such as tatty balls and long pencils to record high scores – a lot less formal than now.

There was not a lot of money around in the early years and, to build up membership, new members were allowed to pay their fees in instalments – at the rate of half a crown a week.

Miners were one of the more highly paid and the Club benefitted from their spending power. Members had all sorts of backgrounds, however, there was a cross-section of trades across the Club’s membership and their help contributed greatly in repairing/improving the clubhouse facilities.

House building in Dunniker Estate started around 1964 and that drew a number of members from the new scheme. The Club welcomed visitors from the estate (within reason) as a means of encouraging membership.

The Ladies Section The Ladies Section was formed in January 1968 but was closed down by March 1971. The Ladies section was reformed in April 1976. The picture below is from the ladies prize-giving in 2007.

The Junior Section Stan Gibson takes great pleasure from himself and James Lorimer having introduced the Boys’ Section.

They took turns along with other members to teach the youngsters on the practice ground.

Two star players emerged – Tommy Cochrane and Davie Gray – but not so much for the golf as the table tennis. Tommy’s style was forceful, while Davie’s was more considered, with finesse.

Stan reflects ‘I somehow feel that manifested itself in their golfing attitude’. Around 10 – 12 boys took part. Sadly the enthusiasm of the boys was cut short on winter evenings as parents wanted the boys home earlier than 10 o’clock at night.

Jim Lorimer, MBE, QPM Jim was the Assistant Chief Constable and carried considerable authority within the Club.

Not only an excellent member and real gentleman, Jim was a golfer who was not shy to practice. Within the Club, Jim kept things under control. Relaxed opening hours resulted in Jim having to nudge May, the Club stewardess, to curtail and have closer regard to the licensing laws!

Jim also had an authoritative presence at Committee meetings. Jimmy Dow, a Police Superintendant, also sat on the Committee and his boss’s presence firmly kept Jimmy’s outbursts closely under control.

A Jim Lorimer end-of-speech remark ... ‘big oaks from little acorns grow’.................. how prophetic in the context of Dunnikier Park Golf Club. In 1977, Jim was appointed the first honorary membership of the Club.

He was Club President from 1977 to 2000.

Social Nights Nowadays. Dunnikier is renowned for its hospitality, friendship and social scene. This can be traced back to the early years with social nights including bingo, dances, Christmas concerts, and social nights with guitar playing etc.

Peter Williamson remembered a winter social night when the Club was being entertained by a guitarist (Cunninghame???). One member had an idea to liven up the night. He went down to the Cottage Hospital in Kirkcaldy and asked to borrow 6 nurses’ uniforms. With success, he returned to the Club with the uniforms where 6 members dressed up in the uniforms as a surprise finale. Little did the audience suspect that the night would be brought to a close by members in nurses’ uniforms bending over to reveal ‘The End’ inscribed on their pants!!

Another example of the humour around the Club in the ‘90’s can be found in a poem from the Jolly Boys at the Founder Members’ Dinner in March 1992. The poem prompted an answer from the Golfing Widdies, although interestingly it took two years to get a response!

The Spirit of Dunniker: Jim Bousie We’ve all been asked by a friend for a game of golf, so there is absolutely nothing unusual about that. But when you’ve just asked your friend, who is courageously losing his fight against cancer, if there is anything you can do for him, and he says a game of golf – to play in Members’ Day – well, that brings a whole different dimension into play.

That was Jim Bousie’s ‘ask’ back in late July 2001, when I visited him one Saturday afternoon. Little did I know at that time the momentous story that was about to unfold, and one that I am privileged and proud to record as a lasting testimony to Jim and the members of Dunnikier Park Golf Club.

It was clear from Jim’s frailty that he had no chance of walking round the course, so my parting words to Jim when I left his house that day were ‘I’ll see what I can do.’

My first challenge was to find a buggy, and the only place I knew that had buggies was Kirkcaldy Golf Club, so I visited Anthony Caira. On discussing with Anthony, he explained there would be no problem providing a courtesy buggy, however, I would need to organise insurance to take the buggy to Dunnikier.

Various phone calls to insurers over the next few days proved fruitless, and time was starting to run out. I had been asking some members for ideas, and it was Ian Crooks who came up with the answer. Ian had a vehicle trailer and offered to contact Kirkcaldy Golf Club to see if Anthony would agree to Ian transporting the buggy via the trailer, without insurance. Anthony realised that we were running out of options and thankfully agreed to carry to risk. So I was able to confirm ‘game on’ to Jim, which created great excitement for him.

Members’ Day came round quickly and it was arranged for Jim to play with his son (Warren) and myself. It started a bright, sunny day. The buggy was loaded up and away we went.

The first nine holes were completely uneventful – I can’t remember anything to this day apart from ordering 3 bacon rolls and brown sauce on my mobile phone coming down the 9th.

However, the 11th hole was beckoning, and we had no idea of what was about to happen.

Jim, a 7-handicapper, had lost his physical strength and had to use his driver at par 3’s to have any chance of reaching the green. So at the 11th out came the driver and Jim hit a drive that rose no higher than a few feet from the ground. The pin was hidden behind the bunker on the left, but somehow, Jim’s ball found a contour that seemed to suck the ball towards the hole. When we reached the green we were absolutely ecstatic to see Jim’s ball sitting nearest the hole. It was reasonably close, but there was still around half of the field to play, so we didn’t expect that result to stand.

From then on, the weather deteriorated, the heavens opened, with the rain coming on very heavily. We were not fully kitted out for that weather, but Jim was determined to play all 18 holes as he knew that was his last opportunity to play the game he loved. I can still see him yet, putting out on the 18th green, with the rain dripping from his nose.

The rest, as they say is history, but in a way that no one in the Club that night will ever forget. Jim did win the 11th by hitting the ball closer to the hole than any of his fellow 200 competitors, using a driver – some ‘5 clubs’ more than he would normally play when in good health.

It should have been impossible for Jim to win anything, but somehow the sun shone on Jim that day, which produced an outcome that was simply miraculous.

At the evening prize-giving, the roar that met Jim when picking up his prize was truly deafening, so proud were members to show their appreciation for a true gent, who had been able to compete in his last game and finish a winner!

Sadly, Jim lost his fight to cancer 3 months later.

His three closest friends, Dai Williams, Bill Mutch and Ian Napier purchased a new trophy ‘The Jim Bousie Memorial Trophy’ which gent members compete for on what was formerly Members’ day. The winner also receives a bottle of Cameron Brig whisky, which was Jim’s favourite tipple.

Celebrating 25 years – The Ball Comes Home!

The celebration of Dunnikier Park Golf Club’s 25th anniversary led to the formal return of the Dunlop 65 struck off the tee on 5th May 1963.

The major event to commerorate the Club’s Silver Anniversary was a Pro-Am held on the Club’s 25th birthday, 30th June, 1988.

Celebrating 40 years Extract from Fife Free Press, June 2003. ‘‘The Kirkcaldy club, which is celebrating its ruby anniversary, was formed when around 40 golfers who played on the town's new municipal course at Dunnikier decided to start their own club in order to gain handicaps to enable them to play competitions on other courses.

Originally, Dunnikier was to be the new home for Dysart Golf Club whose own course was acquired by the Town Council for housing purposes after the Second World War. However, the club was dissolved after officials decided not to make the move, and, in June 1963, a meeting was held by those who used Dunnikier and from that a six-man committee was elected.

The Secretary on that first committee was Eddie Sherry and now, 40 years on, he holds the post of vice-president and is one of only eight of the original 127 founder members to have had continuous membership.

We had played on the course for a few months and in that time were waiting for Dysart to come here but when they didn't we decided to start our own club," Eddie said. "It was actually the course professional at the time, Charlie Burke, who suggested it and his advice was invaluable because we were just all working lads who didn't really know how to run things.

Saying that, there was a great demand for a club in the town and we developed rapidly - in fact, our membership was never below 200 and now stands around 624.

We actually had to ask for permission to play on Dunnikier but when that was granted we were then recognised by Fife Golfing Association and the Scottish Golf Union and have never looked back.

The only connection that remains with the old Dysart club is the Windmill Tower Trophy which was donated by them and has been competed for annually since 1964.

That was the same year that Gordon Meldrum, now part of the match committee, joined Dunnikier and he can recall what it was like back in those early days.

There was definitely a call for another course in Kirkcaldy," he said.

I actually think it was busier in those days because everyone tried to use it at the same time, normally just after work.

It is more spread out now with people able to book tee-off times but then it was first-come, 22

first-served and there were often big rows over who was next on the course!

One of the big improvements was when we started using a new system called Club 2000 for checking scores because before that every score card had to be checked individually. It was a laborious job which took ages. Now, each player just puts their own score in the computer and the results come out a lot quicker.

It is not just technology that has advanced and the refurbished clubhouse is now a modern building with excellent facilities. We actually have a five-year plan which will see the clubhouse expand even further," Gordon said.

We have an enthusiastic committee who are keen for Dunnikier to continue to grow and we have whole families who enjoy coming here. We have always been inclusive and from the very beginning we have had a junior section and a ladies section and these remain popular.

In fact, one of our founding members was 15-year-old Brian Mustard so we have had juniors from the very start," added Eddie. We try to give as much encouragement as possible to the younger members as they are obviously the club's future and we have a competition every week and coaching is provided.

The ladies section is also thriving and again this has been the case from the beginning.

The course was designed by the famous course designer from Paisley, J.R. Stutt, and has everything you would look for in a parkland course – a perfect length, four par 5s, four par 3s, and a proper test. Some of the fairways are more undulating now and obviously there have been trees added but it is basically still the same and one of its great strengths is that it is very picturesque and secluded.

Some Dunnikier ‘Legends’ Dunnikier has been fortunate to have many gifted golfers. A quick glance at the Club Championship Board reveals one name to have dominated the competition, winning it 11 times – Davie Gray. Davie kindly answered a few questions for ‘the record’.

Davie Gray: Age: 59; Born where: Kirkcaldy Where do you stay now: Currently in Aberdeen since January 1994 but have also stayed in Dundee, Inverness & Cupar.

Where do you play now: Currently also a member at Deeside Golf Club. I have also been a member at Monifieth, Cupar, St Andrews (new) and Torvean in Inverness. Paul Lawrie is a member at Deeside.

When did you join Dunnikier Park Golf Club: Been a member at DPGC for about 44 years, so joined junior section in late 60’s.

What was your first handicap: Cannot remember my first handicap, but reduced quickly.

What was your lowest handicap: I was scratch for about 30 years and plus 1 for a few years over same period.

Lowest scratch score at Dunnikier: Best scratch score at DPGC was 67. I also held the course record at Aberdour (60) and Burntisland (64).

What would you say was your greatest golfing achievement and why: Honorary life member at DPGC since 1993. This would be my proudest achievement in being recognised by the Club.

Best shot at Dunnikier I ever saw was by Bobby Thomson at 12 th 2nd shot into green in a Club Championship match.



It would be remiss of me not to mention Eddie Sherry who for many years was Secretary of the Fife Golf Association. Eddie did a fantastic job and was the players’ conduit to the officials when Fife teams played against other counties. He was much respected by all who played for the County team.



It has been a great privilege to be a member of DPGC for so many years with many friends and fantastic memories.



I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to play golf and to have been able to compete at a high level for a long period and represent DPGC on many occasions.

Another member who made his mark, not only at Dunnikier and Fife, but also on the national stage is Derek Paton. Derek joined Dunnikier Park in 1978 after being introduced to the game by Jim Wallace a then prominent Kirkcaldy member.

Derek's first handicap was 23 and at the end of the first season this was cut to 21. Lots of practice saw Derek finish the 1979 season with a handicap of 12 and a few boys trophies in the bag. The following year, Derek went from 12 to a respectable 4 handicap, and in the following year, 1980, Derek made his Fife men's debut against the Borders.

In 1981, Derek won his first men's Open at Lundin Links winning the Birkmyre Bowl and he went on to win this again in 1983. Derek's first Dunniker Park Club Championship win was in 1985 when he defeated David Gray in a 27 hole final on the last green. By now Derek was winning regularly in Fife and 36 hole victories were had at Dunniker, Thornton, Glenrothes, Burntisland, Ladybank, Kirkcaldy, in the following years.

In 1990, Derek played in the final qualifying for the British Open at Lundin Links and was paired with Colin Montgomerie as well as Mats Lanner from Sweden. Derek failed to qualify but Montgomerie qualified by 1 stroke for his first Open and, as they say, the rest is history.

In 1991, Derek played an defeated Andrew Coltart in the quarter final of the Scottish Amateur at Downfield. He lost in the semi-final and was presented with the bronze medal.

Coming off the course that day David Carrick, the Scotland captain, informed Derek that he had been selected to represent Scotland in the Home Internationals in Ireland.

In Sligo that year Derek played for Scotland and in the foursomes against Ireland he played against Paddraig Harrington losing 3&2. Derek was also selected to represent Scotland in the International Cup played in Greece alongside Craig Watson and Wilson Bryson. Derek went on to win many events over the years including 2 Fife Stroke Play Championships, 1 Fife Matchplay, 2 Fife Order of Merits and 2 more Club Championships at Dunnikier.

In 1997, Derek once again won the bronze medal at the Scottish Amateur held at Carnoustie. Derek also won the Club Championship at Leven Golfing Society twice as well as winning the Links Championship twice. ‘‘ The memories of playing at Dunnikier will always be fondly cherished. Many people were responsible for what I achieved with Len Smith and George Flynn being amongst the most influential from a coaching standpoint. Jock McLean, Chopper McLean, Alan Rogers, Tommy Cochrane, David Gray and Irene Jones were always there to support me during my early days and were a great inspiration as I developed in golfing terms. Dunniker was a special club as to me it was my second home and I always felt comfortable and happy when at the club or playing on the course. The course and club hold so many special memories that will live with me forever and I want to thank every member for their support and help over the years’’.

Secretary of the Year 2008 During my captaincy (2007-2009), I benefitted tremendously from the experience and hard work of former captains and office bearers, but none more so than Raymie Johnston. An opportunity rose to nominate Raymond Johnston in a national UK Secretary of the Year competition in 2008, sponsored by Hardy’s Wines. As an insight to members, examples of the tremendous work that were covered in my submission included: Raymond Johnston – the Project Manager In early 2001, before becoming involved in Club Council business, Raymond volunteered his services in project managing the £250,000 clubhouse extension, which provided: - 130 lockers and full facilities – showers, changing facilities etc for members and visitors.

- new beer cellars for the storage/cooling of barrels – to meet environmental standards.

Raymond Johnston – the Club’s Honorary Secretary Raymond joined the Club Council, in February 2003, straight in as the Honorary Secretary when the previous secretary resigned due to work commitments. Following the submission, 6 Club’s were shortlisted, including Dunnikier Park. Each was visited and inspected and Raymie and I were both interviewed by the competition’s sponsors. Raymond was invited to Wentworth in February 2008 where the final 6 were interviewed by the judging panel.

The winner’s prize was a trip for two to Australia where they would visit one of Hardys Wines’ vineyards, as part of their prize. The Club was amazingly proud of Raymie – the only honorary secretary to be short-listed – when he claimed the runner’s up spot, winning a cash prize and a supply of Hardy’s select wines. The winner was Lieutenant-Colonel John Hunt, The Berkshire Golf Club. The compare and contrast aspects of the winner’s and Raymie’s scale of operations makes interesting reading!

To many readers John Hunt simply needs no introduction. “If a guy comes into the business has never been in the business, then I think it’s important to give him a heads up!” said the former captain of the London & Home Counties GCMA region.

In four years of the Secretary of the Year competition, Raymond Johnston is the first honorary secretary to make it to the final. But then Raymond is no normal honorary secretary.

At the age of just 32 Raymond was appointed secretary of Dunnikier Park, a private club where the course is run by Fife Council – where he also works full time as a quantity surveyor lead officer.

John has a reputation for mentoring new recruits and often invites them to The Berkshire for several days to gain valuable experience.

“I like to think I’ve helped a few along,” he added. Within The Berkshire, one of Britain’s premier clubs, he also has a reputation: one of pro-activity – he arrives at the club at 7am six days a week.

On appointment in 1998 John was set goals by his committee to take the club forward. The directives dictated a course health check, a major upgrade of the buildings, the modernisation of office procedures – especially the accounting systems – and improvements to service levels.

The Berkshire GC

After seeking professional advice and with a new course manager appointed by John at the helm, the courses have moved up dramatically in the order of merit following improvements. An extension to the pro shop, an extensive rebuild of the main kitchens and service areas and an overhaul of all the accommodation, housing 14 ‘living in’ staff, were all completed in John’s first five years at a cost of £1.75M. There followed a major coup – a landfill company was contracted to infill a swampy area, grass and drain the ground and pay the club £175,000 for the privilege.

The club now has a state-of-the-art practice facility.

John’s initial 10-year plan is near completion. In October 2007, after more than two years’ detailed planning and cajoling of the committee, contractors moved in simultaneously to refurbish the entire ground floor of the large clubhouse and install and extend the irrigation system on both courses. Additionally, a seven million gallon reservoir was to be built, all at a total cost of £2.5M. Furthermore the committee directed that there was to be no disruption to the life of the members or the society schedule. Both projects are due for completion next month.

Major projects apart, John is responsible for a turnover of £3M in 2007, a well-trained staff cadre of 48, a membership of 1,000 and a very busy society programme. An ecological award in 2006 recognised the club’s pro-active programme of recycling water, waste, bottle and cardboard, and producing top dressing from course cuttings – “all in a day’s work,” said John.

Shortly before he took over, plans had been agreed for the clubhouse to undergo a major refurbishment and extension to the tune of £300,000. “I was just a member RUNNER-UP at the time,” he said, “but I was approached to help. In the end I went to the club Raymond every lunchtime and was measuring and re-measuring and I knew more than the Johnston Dunnikier Park contractor’s quantity surveyor about the project!” Raymond managed the planning consentGC and construction, and minimised disruption to members and the club.

The work allowed the creation of proper changing rooms for visitors and members and the erection of a purpose-built beer cellar. Raymond played a key role in controlling the costs and helped ensure the project was finished on time and to budget. Over the last four years he has also organised a complete rewire of the clubhouse, bringing in energy efficient heating and lighting systems with cost-efficient sensors, and managed the installation of a controlled security system.

Raymond has made the club more profitable. Under his stewardship the club has 50 local sponsors and all 30 weekly competitions are now supported. All tee furniture is also sponsored, meaning the club receives £10,000 per annum from these ventures. Furthermore, the former catering arrangement has been brought in-house, bringing with it substantial financial benefits.

A keen advocate of junior golf, not least because he has two four-year old twins, Raymond introduced Clubgolf – making Dunnikier Park one of the first in Fife to launch the scheme, meaning that several juniors have joined the club. The club is also one of the busiest in Scotland, offering free live entertainment to members every Saturday night.

Elsewhere, Raymond, who inherited a club where the database was entirely manual, has implemented a computer system whereby all the records are held electronically, the computerised tills offer members’ discounts and the majority of communication is now done via email. Moreover, he also reviewed the club’s health and safety procedures, appointed a health and safety consultant and ensured the club complied with the Disability Discrimination Act and employment law issues.

“I work three hours a day for the club at home,” he said. “With a full-time job and twins it means I have a lot of time management issues!”

2013: A Year of Investment 2013 was a year of major investment both on and off the course.

Course improvements were led by the Fife Golf Trust, established in April 2012. Savings through exemption from VAT enabled the Trust to lever significant capital investment into the 7 courses under its new management.

For Dunnikier, this presented the opportunity to tackle the significant drainage problems that had plagued the course for many years, due to its blue clay soil. The solution was to turn back the clock to the days when it is believed a burn ran the entire width of the course.

A swale was constructed over the winter months and the works, costing around £160,000 were completed for the start of the 2013/14 season. The Trust has continued to undertake course improvements including reconstructing greens and reshaping bunkers.

The Trust also invested in fully refurbishing the professional’s shop/starters’ box, by converting the available space into an attractive fully-stocked pro shop for members and visitors alike. Alasdair McDonald, was appointed golf professional, which involved taking on the role of the 2 starters (Dougie and John), formerly employed by Fife Council.

The Golf Club also invested around £35,000 in refurbishing the main lounge by extending the dance floor and replacing all furniture, flooring etc.

Lounge refurbishment: Old to New

A further £15,000 was spent creating a Junior/Sports Lounge in the attic space above the gents’ locker room. The room was kitted out with a 60inch LED television, surround sound, wifi, and a pool table. Preferential access was given to the junior section, and the room proved very popular with the adults, especially for the weekly darts/dominoes/ pool tournaments during the winter months.

The cost of the Club refurbishments was carried out with no requirement to raise any levy on Club members, or borrow any money.

2013: A Year filled with 50th Birthday Celebrations 2013 was a milestone year for both the Club and Fife Golf Trust.

Dunnikier Park Golf Course celebrated its golden anniversary, 50 years to the day since Councillor Harry Nicholson formally opened the course on Saturday, May 5th 1963.

This time round, the honour of teeing off first went to Founder Member Tam Guild(85), who is still a member of Dunnikier Park Golf Club today.

Tam split the fairway, driving his Dunlop 65 over 170 yards to the delight of those witnessing the historical event.

Tam’s drive formally opened the 50th Anniversary Family Open, the first of many golfing and social events held by the Club to mark its 50th birthday celebrations.

The Club’s 50th birthday was organised over the weekend 28th – 30th June, under the theme ‘The Past, the Present and the Future’.

‘The Past’ was recognised, on Friday, 28th June, with a gala dinner. The guests of honour were the 6 surviving Founder Members (left to right): John Chalmers; Brian Mustard (who joined as a 15 year old in the juniors). Tom Guild (the first registered member of Dunnikier Park Golf Club); Peter Williamson; Eddie Sherry; Arthur Jobson.

The most senior of the Founder Members, Peter Williamson, was a member of the former Dysart Golf Club before becoming involved in the setting up of Dunnikier Park Golf Club.

Although registered blind, Peter retained a vivid memory of the early days of the Club, and was very pleased to chat about these happy times. Sadly, Peter passed away on 6 th January, 2014, a few weeks short of his 100th birthday.

The top table included Neil Crooks, Chair of Kirkcaldy Local Area Committee, Grant Ward, Head of Leisure and Cultural Services, Fife Council, Alistair MacGregor, Chief Executive of Fife Golf Trust. The Master of Ceremonies was Kenny Kingshott, and the entertainment was provided by after-dinner speaker, Jim Robertson, Procurator Fiscal. The guests, numbering more than 80, included former club champions, club captains, guests from local golf clubs in Fife and members of the Club Council.

Alastair Ferguson provided a superb 5-course meal; Neil Crooks addressed the Founder Members before raising a toast to them; Eddie Sherry replied on behalf of the Founder Members.

The toast was a 15-year old Speyside malt, specially commissioned and bottled for the Club’s 50th Anniversary. The Club’s appreciation to the Founder Members was recognised by presenting each of them with a scroll granting them free membership through exempt status of the Club, and a bottle of the Club’s 50th Speyside malt.

Kirkcaldy Golf Club presented Stuart Ward, our Club Captain with a engraved bowl to mark our 50th Anniversary.

On Saturday, 29th June, the Club celebrated ‘The Present’ with a major prize-winning competition sponsored by the Course Professional, Alasdair McDonald.

This was followed by entertainment and dancing through to the early hours, with Captain, Stuart Ward giving a toast to the Club at midnight and the lighting of the birthday cake.

The Club celebrated Sunday, 30th June – its 50th birthday – by focussing on ‘The Future’ – its juniors. The events provided a fun-filled day, starting with a 9-hole, texas scramble tournament – 3-person teams including a junior.

Members, guests and their youngsters were then treated to three hours of entertainment from Kenny the Clown, ably assisted by our Captain, Stuart Ward.

The kids had the honour of blowing the candles out on the Club’s 50 th birthday cake.

The Club’s 50th celebrations were brought to a close on 9th November with the junior prize-giving and another visit from Kenny the Clown, who provided excellent family entertainment, including games and a disco.

The 50th celebrations ended with lots of bangs, sparkles and whizzes, as we lit up the skies with a tremendous barrage of fireworks.

Somebody who couldn’t manage along to join in the Club’s celebrations was Selwyn Burke, Charlie Burke’s son.

Selwyn now stays down south, and as it happened was up in Scotland in June 2013 playing at Elie in a seniors’ tournament. Selwyn contacted the Club and we were honoured to show him round the Club as well as the course so he could see the tremendous work done by the Golf Trust in creating the wandering swale, the reshaped greens and improved drainage. Selwyn wrote to the Club, giving his apologies. A copy of his letter follows.

Letter from Selwyn Burke - Charlie Burke’s Son

Thank you for the hospitality you showed me when I visited Dunnikier Park Golf Club last week. I am truly sorry that I can’t be with you at the Founder Members’ Dinner this evening.

Being shown around the golf course and clubhouse bought back many memories of my father - the late Charlie Burkes’ time there.

We arrived as a family in Dunnikier in 1963. My father took up the position of Professional golfer and Head Green keeper at the Club and was involved in the early stages of Dunnikier Golf Club’s development.

He made many friends there and in his retirement he himself often talked of his memories right up to his passing in 1995.

As a boy I myself was an active member of the Junior Section and also recollect many happy times including our “ Secret ” card games in the Boys Club Night. I did of course enjoy my golf as well, and still attempt to play to this day.

As we discussed, I would like to donate the putter that my father used to win the Hampshire County Championship in 1955 and continued to use throughout his professional career. It is very dear to me but I can’t think of a better place I would like it to finally stay and help to build the history of the club.

That just leaves me to wish you well in your 50th Year Celebrations this week and every success in the coming years.

50th Celebration Acknowledgements The planning of the celebration of the Club’s 50th birthday started around 3 years ago with the commitment to refurbish the main lounge and create additional facilities to encourage junior participation in the club.

Unknown to us at that time was the Trust’s intention to invest around £200k in reshaping some greens, creating the swale running across the course, enhancing the professional’s shop and other improvement works. Together, these initiatives now provide first class facilities both on and off the course.

The 50th celebrations started with the Golf Trust celebrating the opening of the Course on 5th May 1963. Many thanks to Tam Guild, one of the Founder Members for doing us the honour of hitting the ball off the tee to mark the start of the Family Open commemorating the 50th anniversary of the course. Thanks also to Alastair McGregor and Paul Murphy for arranging the course’s 50th celebration Family Open.

Members Remember In 1971, having moved from Edinburgh to Kirkcaldy, I decided to join one of the local golf clubs. Two friends at work offered to take me to Balwearie and Dunnikier. After visiting both there was really no decision. The layout of the course and the atmosphere in the clubhouse made joining Dunnikier an easy choice for me.

Over the years I have seen many changes to both the golf course and the clubhouse. Who can remember the following?

-

Green fees costing £5.00 per year.

-

Very few trees within the course.

-

Knee high rough between the 4th and 5 th and 8th and 9th fairways.

-

A fairway bunker just short of the 14th green.

-

A small pond made from concrete slabs to the left of the 4th green.

-

Only the lower level of putting surface on the 4th green.

-

Playing the course in reverse during the winter.

-

The clubhouse (before the extension at the back) being half the size it is.

Who also remembers the professional tournament held during the 70’s when Bernard Gallacher was leading playing the last? Having hit a great drive halfway up the hill he went with a high iron shot to the green.

Unfortunately, it was slightly right, hit a spectator on the head and ricocheted out of bounds. After checking on the very dazed spectator the irate Gallacher took the long walk back to play another ball and subsequently lost the tournament. Photos from the event follow on the next page.

In my 42 years as a member I have never tired of teeing it up at the first and have always found the course to be a challenge. I am sure you will all agree that the changes to the course made over the last couple of years have made a vast improvement and, in my opinion, an even greater challenge.

Over these years I have also seen many changes and improvements to our clubhouse making it one of the best around. What has not changed though, in this time, is the friendly atmosphere of the club, the members and the staff. A golf club I’ve always been proud to be a member of.

Westminster Trophy Willie Arbuckle had no idea when he won Dunnikier Park’s Westminster Trophy in 2007 that he would have the privilege of having the trophy presented by none other than the Prime Minister himself!

The Trophy originally presented by Harry Gourlay in the mid sixties, has been competed for on an annual basis since then, with the winner also being presented with a bottle of House of Commons’ whisky.

When asked by Gordon Brown what his winning score was, Willie answered ‘I can’t remember, but it was the lowest!’

Twinning with Ingolstadt Dunnikier Park Golf Club has been connected with Ingolstadt Golf Club for a number of years.

Through the Kirkcaldy Town Twinning Association, Ingolstadt Golf Club hosted a visit from six members of Dunnikier Park Golf Club, who were invited across to Ingolstadt to reestablish contact with our German friends.

The visit in October 2009 included a civic reception at the Rathaus, where the group were met by Dr Lehman, Oberburgermeister (Town Mayor), Zep Misselbeck, Burgermeister, and Karl Schick, President of Ingolstadt Golf Club.

To mark the visit, Martin Christie presented an engraved quaich from the members of Dunnikier Park Golf Club and a bottle of malt whisky and ties from the Royal & Ancient Golf Club, St Andrews.

The Group’s itinerary included: playing in the President’s Cup; a guided tour of Ingolstadt; a visit to the Audi Factory; and the mandatory visit to the Oktoberfest – the Munich Beer Festival!

From the evidence of the festivities that followed that day, it’s safe to say that Francie fully availed himself of the German hospitality!

Dunnikier Park’s association with Ingolstadt Golf Club continues to this day. Zep Misselbeck visited Kirkcaldy in 2012 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the town twinning between Kirkcaldy and Ingolstadt.

Unfortunately Zep’s diary did not allow him to attend the Club’s 50th Anniversary Dinner on 28th June 2013. However, Ingolstadt very kindly presented Dunnikier with a glass memento to mark for our 50th Anniversary.

Take your mind back to the 2005 Open at St.Andrews. Remember that wayward drive which ended up deep in the gorse at the 6th hole? Who found the ball for Mr Woods? None other than a marshal from this Club!

That year, more than 40 members joined hundreds of other golf fans from clubs all over Scotland in ensuring that the tournament ran smoothly, although for one anonymous Dunnikier greenhorn, it was all a bit of an eye-opener, as he (yes, it was a man!) explains .....

“As an innocent volunteer, who had not done this sort of thing before, I’d thought marshalling at the 6th hole at St. Andrews can’t be that hard – WRONG. Having now been and done it and now wearing the tee-shirt (well, the Open cap and jacket – at least I still have mine!) I can honestly say it was really hard work, saying nothing of the 6 o’clock rises every day.

The 6th hole must be one of the most complicated holes to marshal. It has a noisy tee area; flags to signal blind drives; the fairway attracts balls from the 13th tee; drives come up to the spectator crossing point; one noisy stand on the left; another stand which sits like an island, bordering both the 12th and 6th greens, which spectators can only get on and off between players’ second shots to the green, when they are not putting and only after they have teed off from the 7th – are you starting to get a feel of how complex marshalling really is???

But it’s only in times of adversity that the true bulldog spirit kicks in, and there was plenty evidence of that last week. From Bob Waddell to all the way through the squad of over 40 marshals, everyone played their part, and we managed to make our mark to a worldwide audience of millions in a number of spectacular ways.

Here are a few examples (no names attributed):  allowing drives from the 6th tee, a ball only missing a player by inches in a fairway bunker – well commented on by Peter Aliss;  finding Tiger’s wayward drive in the gorse bushes, alongside another ball, which created short-term confusion for the R&A;  getting Dunnikier Park Golf Club especially mentioned by Mark James on television, with the DPGC brolly also captured by the cameras; and  an article by Ian Woods in The Scotsman telling how a Dunnikier marshal showed his ‘Quiet Please’ sign to an over-flying jet!

This labour of love was ‘bought’ for the princely sum of a £10 voucher for a 5-6 hour shift, which, that year, could only be used to buy food and drink, rather than Open merchandise – much to the severe annoyance of a number of Clubs who were leaning towards sending letters of complaint to the R&A. So how much drink can you buy with the vouchers? Certainly too much Krony (Kronenbourg for the uninitiated) as some found out on the Saturday night, but then you’ve got to be daft to do this job anyway!

So roll the years forward to when the Open returns to St Andrews when most of us will probably make the same mistake by signing on again – the hard work, the laughs, the friends we made from all over the world and the many celebrity autographs, all seemed to make it worthwhile.

Raymie Remembers My first memory of Dunnikier was the school summer holidays in the mid 80’s playing with ‘Wanny’ (Grant Wanless, now in Australia) and ‘Smitch’ (Grant Smith, still a member).

Every day we played 18 holes in the morning, into the Club for our plate of chips and coke (diet coke for big Wanny!!), then 18 holes in the afternoon, back to Smitch’s mums for our tea, then back for 9 holes at night.

Another highlight was playing with big Ewan Wishart in a doubles tournament.

At the 12th it appeared that I was out of bounds. When we approached the general area, my ball was actually in bounds under the trees. At this point Tony Rodgers was passing on his bike. He stopped with his son and told him to pay attention as I was the only member in the Golf Club capable of playing this impossible shot from 80 yards.

I hit the shot and holed it for a 3!

There was huge excitement, myself and then Ewan made our way to the green in celebration. Ewan picked the ball out and to my horror it was not my ball, we were subsequently disqualified!!!

In 1986, I played Gregor (Goog) Morrison in the Boys’ Club Championship semi finals. I was playing off 7 in those days and Goog was the title favourite, so it was a tough match and I found myself 2 down with 2 to play.

On the 17th tee I looked at my watch and had to concede the game as I had to go for my bus back home, then in Lochgelly.

Who knows what would have happened to my career if I had continued and won the next two holes! Goog still talks about this story to this day.

I have generally seen every inch of the course, as most golfers know. A par from the path at the 7th after a block from the 10th tee is a particular highlight I remember.

One final highlight springs to mind. I was playing with Ritch Mitchell and another member last year on the 13th during a medal. Rich holed his second shot and the other two of us birdied the hole. A combined score of 8 surely has never been beaten in 50 years of competitive golf on that hole.

Dunnikier Park Trophies From the old......

There are only 2 trophies with 1963 as the first year:

The Sherry Trophy (pictured): This solid silver trophy was donated

by Mary and Hugh Sherry (Eddie Sherry’s mum and dad). The trophy was originally a boxing trophy won by Eddie’s uncle, which was gifted to Mary as her wedding present.

The Buchan Cup: This trophy was donated by Bill Berry and his wife (maiden name Buchan). The trophy was originally a badminton trophy which Bill’s wife won when playing for Scotland.

1964 saw the addition of further trophies:

Windmill Trophy (pictured): This is the only trophy that was brought up from Dysart Golf Club. It was originally presented to Dysart Golf Club in 1902. When donated to Dunnikier Park Golf Club, the trophy was in complete disrepair and the cost of its full restoration (8 guineas) was paid for by Arthur Jobson’s father-in-law, John Erskine.
