Welcome to our NeW 2017 holidAY BRoChURe Welcome to Memory Lane’s tours for 2017. Whether you are new to Memory Lane or one of those highly valued customers who keep coming back to us, I do hope you’ll like what you read. A surprising amount of it is based on tour feed-back, so please keep it coming. I do read every word of it personally, and I do take notice! For example, many of you have told me how much you like the flexibility in our tours. When you see the excursions included on many of our tours, you won’t see a date attached to them. This is so your driver can take account of local conditions, such as weather, markets or festivals and plan a final itinerary which takes best advantage of all opportunities. Sometimes it’s best not to do things by the book, even if it’s just a matter of changing the order of the pages! Obviously, some tours do require more detailed planning. With these, you’ll see the heading ‘your holiday itinerary’ instead of ‘excursions included’ in the pages that follow. On the other hand, when it comes to customer care, I’m really proud that we do things by the book, often going beyond clients’ expectations and adding pages of our own! Have a look at details of our home pickup services, for instance. Remember that all our tours are operated by highly professional drivers (I’m proud to be one myself) who will go the extra mile to look after you. On diner tours, you will enjoy the company and services of a second crew-member, the hostess, often someone you know! Sometimes we even take a local specialist guide on board as well. So enjoy your reading, book with confidence and, most importantly, have a great trip. I look forward to seeing you during what promises to be another bumper season. A few things to keep in mind ... ●

DINER EXECUTIVE TOURS

Our diner executive coaches are full-sized vehicles but with fewer seats than usual. The space saved is taken up by a kitchen and servery. Here the hostess prepares freshly made light lunches, with copious quantities of tea or coffee. She serves you at your seat. All you have to do is enjoy the experience. Oh yes, and the hostess does the washing-up, too. You see, there are no plastic cups in our diners, just the real thing like you’d want for your guests at home! Obviously all this takes time. On the first and final days we stop, often off the motorway, for you to provide your own lunch. Even on these days, however, we’ll serve you

6

complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits at your seat at some of our stops en route. ●

SPECIAL MEAL ARRANGEMENTS

You’ll see the letters SMA against a few tours, rather than the more usual FB (full board) or HB (half board). “Special Meal Arrangements” means extra meals or snacks when in the hotel but not, for example, during coach journeys. ●

EXECUTIVE AND CONTINENTAL TOURS

You’ll have opportunities to buy really good value hot and cold drinks on board. In the UK, lunch stops will often be in reasonably priced outlets away from the motorways. On the continent we do make more use of motorway service areas, but they are generally quite reasonably priced by the standards in the country concerned. ●

GROUPS

All our prices offer great value. However, we can often make them even more tempting for parties of 20 or more travelling together. Perhaps you like the idea of taking one of our advertised tours and don’t need too many pick-up points. Or just tell us roughly where you’d like to go, and for how long, and we’ll come up with some mouth-watering ideas. Or give us more precise details of your plans and we’ll just provide the transport. However you approach it, tell us what you want us to do and watch us measure up to expectations. None of our group leaders are disappointed by your response and there’s no charge for asking! ●

OUR HOME PICK UP SERVICE

I know how much you like the peace of mind our door-to-door service gives you. So, you can look forward to being collected by a friendly driver, usually in a comfortable minibus (we’ve just had to increase the fleet because you like this part so much!) and be taken the often short distance to and from your luxury coach. The driver will even load your luggage for you. By the way, just compare the way we do this with those who collect passengers in a full size shuttle coach, adding several needless hours to passengers’ journeys as they travel huge distances the length and breadth of the country, just to collect a large and viable load. Those of you who live beyond our home pick-up service area need not worry. We can usually offer you the same service for a remarkably small additional cost. For overseas visitors we can offer reasonably priced overnight accommodation.

We can also arrange for a small number of customers cars to be parked at our depot for those who wish, but cars are parked at your own risk. ●

LUGGAGE, WALKING AIDS AND SCOOTERS

We’d be really grateful if you could manage with ONE CASE each! Even if you are travelling as a couple, we’d still be pleased if you could keep this request in mind: two small cases are always better than one large one for two. This is partly for the benefit of those of us who make all the luggage fit into the nooks and crannies of coach holds and minibus luggage compartments. But it’s also for you. You see, if your case weighs more than 20kg, hotels are within their rights to refuse porterage. Please be sure to tell us if you’re planning to bring a wheel-chair or other mobility device. We are happy to transport your wheelchair, but due to the limited luggage space it is important that you arrange this when making your reservation. Scooters, We always do our best to accommodate scooters, but they is always a problem getting them on to our feeder cars, so we would request that scooters are brought to the garage the day before departure of your tour, also many resorts have hire centres where you can obtain a hire scooter at a reasonable prices. Please be aware that our drivers are not responsible for any damage to your machine when manoeuvring to and from the coach. Please check that your chosen hotel allows wheelchairs. ●

HOTEL GRADING

We use our own star rating scheme, based on our many years of experience. In practice, it correlates quite closely with that of the motoring organisations. ●

AND FINALLY

Clearly, all holidays are subject to enforced change in the event of adverse weather conditions. We know you’ll understand if the itinerary has to be modified. We’ll do our best if the weather doesn’t, and so will our partners. Thanks for your understanding. Enjoy your holiday!

Cotswolds

lincolnshire

Cotswold villages are some of the most beautiful in Britain – think honey-coloured cottages, cosy pubs, tiny tearooms and narrow streets.

Based in grantham, in the beautiful county of lincolnshire

The glorious, honey-coloured towns and villages of the Cotswolds look as if they have strayed into the 21st century from another era. The past here is appealingly evident in striking wool churches and manor houses built by wealthy textile merchants. Flourishes of later heritage include a fine legacy of the Arts and Crafts movement.

We include admission to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitors Centre at RAF Coningsby, home to the most diverse collection of flying aircraft in the Royal Air Force. We also include admission to the wonderful Barnsdale Gardens, a collection of 38 gardens originally created by TV gardener Geoff Hamilton, a visit to the renowned Pork Pie Shoppe with a demonstration and tasting and, last but not least, a guided tour of fascinating Lincoln with its stunning cathedral and castle.

Broadway, Cotswolds

long Weekend Our doorstep pickups completed we head south to arrive in Stratford upon Avon before lunch. We spend the afternoon here before we check in at The Holiday Inn where there is a superb pool for those who would like a swim or sauna before our evening meal. On Saturday our guide joins us for a tour of The Archers radio programme and we can see if the blossoms around Evesham are out. On Sunday we visit the famous Cotswold villages of Bourton on the Water, Stow and Broadway, again returning with time to relax before dinner. On Monday after breakfast we call at Webbs Garden Centre and then travel via the old road northward to our door to door service late afternoon.

Cornish splendor & doc Martin

shanklin

St Agnes is a picturesque village on the spectacularly beautiful Atlantic coast of Cornwall. Steeped in mining and maritime history the village now contents itself with providing a warm welcome for tourists, many of whom return year after year. They clearly feel, as we do, that it’s a great base. Our visits include Port Isaac for Doc Martin, Padstow for Rick Stein’s, St Ives, Truro and a day at the Eden Project often called the sixth wonder.

This pretty island is rich in history, including having a brief status as an independent kingdom in the 15th century. The island was home to the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson and to Queen Victoria who built her much loved summer residence and final home, Osborne House at East Cowes. The island’s maritime and industrial history encompasses boat building, sail making, the manufacture of flying boats and the world’s first hovercraft and the testing and development of Britain’s space rockets. Nowadays the island is well known for being a top tourist destination with so much to offer with beautiful sandy beaches, majestic cliffs and pretty country leafy lanes.

Fishing village of Port isaac Our excursions include a full day to Eden Project (please note there is easy access for all), a shorter day with a visit to Truro - Cornwall’s only City, Port Isaac - we start with plenty of time to explore where most of Doc Martin is produced and in the afternoon we spend our time in Padstow. On another super day we visit St. Ives and enjoy a pleasant drive along the coast.

This diamond shaped island offers great excursions. We normally offer an east and west tour, a day to Newport and Godshill and Cowes and a day at leisure in this great resort.

What could be nicer than a weeks holiday enjoying the summer sunshine in one of the most popular resorts on the English Riviera. Paignton is one of the most popular seaside resorts offering a great selection for young and old alike. A wonderful array of shops, typical English attractions and amusements, a great pitch and putt and lovely seafront to stroll along, not forgetting the pretty harbour.

Tucked away on the English Welsh border Shropshire is easy to reach from almost anywhere. And like all the best places, Shropshire is also just far enough away that it’s stayed unspoilt and comparatively unchanged. Here you will find Medieval Shrewsbury, birthplace of Charles Darwin and Ironbridge, birthplace of all things industrial and little Much Wenlock – the inspiration for the modern Olympics. Ever since those clever Romans discovered Shropshire as an ideal place for some decent R&R, Shropshire has been offering comfy beds, good food, proper ales and the like to the weary. All served up with the sort of warmth and hospitality that encourages friends to return. It’s a tradition that continues today.

sidmouth

From the Victorian pier and three tier promenade, to a world-class marina and vibrant watersports centre, Eastbourne is both a classic and modern English seaside town.

Sidmouth never changes. Once called the town caught in a timeless charm. This beautiful resort is full of Regency charm and architecture, fine gardens, leisurely walks along the seafront and striking red cliffs millions of years old. Some of the finest on the World Heritage Site we call the ‘Jurassic Coast’ to which people come to visit from all over the world.

A natural gateway to the South Downs, Eastbourne attracts thousands of visitors looking to get away from it all. Eastbourne is also a wonderful base to explore the glorious surrounding countryside and the Sussex Coast. Ultimately, the beach dominates the activities in Eastbourne itself. And, whether you’re listening to music in the 1930s bandstand or simply dipping your toes in the Quality Coast award-winning waters, it’s easy to see why the beach is so popular!

Dunoon is the largest town in Argyll. It’s built around two bays between which is the site of the former Dunoon Castle. There’s an excellent view of the town from here. Your visit will be memorable as the scenery really is unparalleled in these parts. Take a stroll, as the locals do, through the Botanic Gardens or the Victorian town centre. You’ll be tempted, we know, by the tea rooms and shops. But don’t worry - you’re on holiday!

The world famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an annual global gathering showcasing talents of musicians and performers from all over the world. Taking place high above the majestic skyline of Scotland’s capital city on the floodlit castle esplanade, the Tattoo is a stunning international spectacle of music, ceremony, entertainment and theatre. A wonderful experience not to missed by young and old alike as you witness the massed Pipes and Drums, the bands from her Majesty’s Royal Marines, cultural troupes, singers and the poignant refrain of the Lone Piper all against the back drop of Edinburgh Castle.

2. YOUR HOLIDAY PRICE U.K. HOLIDAYS : The price of your holiday is not guaranteed and may be subject to surcharges which may include higher than inflation fuel increases and those resulting from government action, including additional bonding or licensing requirements and increases in VAT. In these cases we reserve the right to pass these amounts on in full. Holiday prices include all coach travel, hotel accommodation and meals as specified in the holiday description and VAT at the current rate where applicable.
