MOLINA SCHOOL OF JAZZ IN ALAMOS SONORA MEXICO Why do we do what we do?

Currently, there is a crisis in music education in the Public School System where only a fraction of middle and high school students have any access to an education in the arts; There are not many inner-city youth programs structured for interaction. The discipline of music education combined with positive reinforcement, physical training, and academic assistance will result in: 1) less children being attracted to “street life” (thereby reducing crime); • 2) lowering the school drop-out rate, (which can lead to dropping out of society); and 3) a greater sense of accomplishment, improving self-worth and self-esteem.

THE MSJ PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO TEACH THE ART OF JAZZ AND LATIN MUSIC Molina School of Jazz & NextStudent Jazz/Latin music program will be composed of children residing in Central and South Phoenix who are attending a public school that has reduced or eliminated its music programs, yet know they have students who love band, but who cannot afford the high cost of private lessons.

We will introduce our afterschool program to school principals and other school administrators, with preference given to those schools without full-time music educators. Students will be selected through consultation with school administrations, teachers and parents, and of course primarily based upon students’ interest and dedication to learning Instrumental and Vocal music;

The program offers music instruction at three levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each prospective student auditions in order to be placed in the appropriate level according to his/her proficiency in music. The Beginner Class will focus on a basic understanding of the fundamentals of music, including reading and performance techniques. Intermediate students will be trained in additional music reading skills and the ability to perform in front of an audience. The 30 most advanced students will be trained in Jazz and Latin ensemble performance and will perform in various competitions to inspire and promote the ensemble members’ confidence and pride.

Auditions are open to students in grades 6 through 12, who play trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, guitar, bass, or drums. Jazz students in grades 9 though 12 are encouraged to prepare a required solo and audition for the ensemble. To allow students to audition for and participate in both of the Youth Honors Bands (Concert Band and Jazz Band)
