The Class Acts of Central Arkansas

s the new school year approaches, I’m reminded of being a kid. I always looked forward to shopping for school supplies, and the classroom status symbol was a brightly colored Trapper Keeper — the notebook that fastened with Velcro. It helped students stay organized as they expanded their view of the world.

In this issue, we include articles about programs, students and adults who are at the “Head of the Class,” and we have many interesting stories to share. First, our cover photo represents the World International Affairs Camp offered at the University of Central Arkansas in July. About 50 students spent a week learning about international policies and needs. The goal is to awaken their global perspective so they will take that back to campuses and homeschool settings around the state. This camp is offered in only a few regions of our country.

Another first-class program was unearthed by writer Judy Riley at the Mount Vernon-Enola School District in Faulkner County. This district embodies the phrase “A Small Town with a Big Heart.” Each year, the agriculture and FFA programs challenge students to create or donate items that are then auctioned at a special dinner. Last spring, the event raised more than $80,000, which was used for scholarships to help students cover the costs of college, trade schools or employment. Money is also set aside to purchase supplies for the next round of students.

This article is also top of mind for me. In the photo above, I’m standing with Rory and Niki Thompson, who donated their pet donkey to the Pediatrics Plus Farm. I was privileged to be there when Darius the donkey arrived, and heard the children and workers cheer and squeal with excitement! They are anxious to feed and pet him, which is a fun way to achieve the occupational, physical or speech therapy they need.

And we discovered Sandy Hudspeth’s automotive artistry in Perry County. He won Best Man Cave in 103.7 FM The Buzz’s contest this year. Hudspeth is head and shoulders above others in his ability to reclaim and restore automobiles into impressive Man Cave furnishings. Don’t miss Makenzie Evans’ exceptional photos in this issue.

A group of 17 UCA College of Education students, community members, and four faculty members were “Loving LIFE” in Northern Ireland during a study-abroad journey at Stranmillis University College (SUC). Faulkner County Museum celebrates America 250 by bringing the past to life.

A

s communities across the country prepared to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, the Faulkner County Museum offered Central Arkansans an early opportunity to step back in time during its Semiquincentennial Celebration on July 2.

Held on the historic courthouse square in downtown Conway, the event transformed history into a hands-on experience. Families enjoyed old-fashioned games, listened to traditional music and discovered what daily life was like generations ago through interactive activities designed to connect the past with the present.

Visitors tried their hand at churning butter and crafting rag dolls from strips of fabric, while The Greathouse Pickers entertained the crowd with a front-porch pickin’ performance at the museum’s historic dogtrot cabin. For many in attendance, the music and demonstrations sparked memories of simpler times and traditions passed down through generations.

The Greathouse Pickers entertained onlookers with traditional hymns, bluegrass and folk music.

Volunteers also shared the stories behind two of the museum’s most treasured historic structures — the restored 1833 dogtrot cabin and the former Faulkner County Jail, built in 1896 and home to the museum for nearly three decades.

Through exhibits, artifacts and educational programs, the museum continues to preserve the people, places and stories that shaped Faulkner County.

The celebration reflected the museum’s mission of preserving local history while inspiring future generations to appreciate it. Founded in 1992 and opened to the public in 1997, the Faulkner County Museum houses extensive collections documenting the county’s history, from prehistoric artifacts and family archives to photographs, artwork and everyday objects that tell the story of life in Central Arkansas.

S mall T own , B ig C elebration Enola marks 25 years of Independence Day tradition.

ore than 600 people gathered in Enola on July 4 to celebrate a quarter century of small-town tradition during the city’s 25th Annual 4th of July Celebration.

Hosted by the City of Enola and the Enola Fire Department at the city park, the event brought neighbors, families and visitors together for an evening filled with food, music, fellowship and one of the area’s most anticipated fireworks shows.

To mark the silver anniversary, guests enjoyed a complimentary fish fry prepared by Bobby Tucker and his crew. Community members also contributed homemade desserts and donations, reflecting the hometown spirit that has helped make the event successful for 25 years.

Live music by The Ordinaires entertained the crowd throughout the evening before more than 30 minutes of fireworks illuminated the night sky.

The park’s brick-and-stone memorial, which lists the names of community members who died in service to the nation, served as a fitting reminder of the sacrifices behind the freedoms celebrated each Independence Day. Twenty-five years after the first celebration, Enola continues to prove that some of the biggest Independence Day traditions are found in the smallest communities.

HomeTowne Retirement Community dedicates flagpole in tribute to veterans

he stars and stripes were raised for the first time July 3 over HomeTowne Retirement Community in Conway during a celebration honoring veterans, military families and those who continue to serve.

Redwood Management and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7769 organized the ceremony, which centered on the dedication of a new flagpole and commemorative plaque. Army veteran Marvin Wendel and Becky Wendel donated the flag and pole, while Daisie McCann, a military wife and mother, donated the plaque.

The inscription beneath the flag explains the meaning behind the permanent tribute: “This flag flies in tribute to the men and women who have served and continue to serve our nation.” It also expresses gratitude for their courage, sacrifice and unwavering dedication to protecting America’s freedoms.

Following the ceremony, the celebration continued with hamburgers and hot dogs grilled by staff, along with music, singing, a raffle and frozen treats. The afternoon brought residents, staff members and guests together for both remembrance and fellowship.

Long after the celebration ended, the new flag remained flying above HomeTowne as a daily reminder of service, sacrifice and freedom.

istory came alive through music, laughter and patriotism on June 30 as Renewal Ranch welcomed Jubilation Jazz for a special concert celebrating America’s upcoming 250th birthday. The evening combined inspiring music, lighthearted comedy and historical storytelling while reflecting the Christian values shared by both the performers and the audience.

Renewal Ranch, a faith-based residential addiction recovery ministry for men ages 21 and older, hosted the event as part of its ongoing mission to bring hope and encouragement to those rebuilding their lives.

Jubilation Jazz is made up of talented volunteer musicians from Arkansas and neighboring states who donate both their time and

travel expenses to perform throughout the Mid-South. Under the direction of veteran musician Wally Fowler, the ensemble presents patriotic concerts, Christmas productions and worship programs for churches and community organizations, using music to celebrate both faith and country.

The Renewal Ranch performance was one stop on the group’s extensive patriotic tour, which includes appearances across Arkansas, Tennessee and the Delta region through the fall.

Inaugural Folklife Festival celebrates the music, flavors and traditions that make the 501 one of a kind.

A

rkansas showed up in full color June 26-28 as thousands of visitors filled Riverfront Park in North Little Rock for the inaugural Arkansas Folklife Festival.

The free, three-day celebration brought the state’s living traditions together in one place through music, storytelling, handmade crafts, regional foodways and the people who continue to carry those traditions forward.

Part of the national America 250 initiative and the Smithsonian’s Of the People: The Smithsonian Festival of Festivals, the event highlighted Arkansas’ six culturesheds — distinct regions shaped by their geography, history and cultural traditions.

Grammy-winning artists Lucinda Williams and Bobby Rush headlined the festival, joined by dozens of Arkansas musicians, artisans, storytellers and cultural practitioners. Together, they created a program that moved easily from major concert performances to front-porch traditions, community dances, craft demonstrations and stories handed down through generations.

The result was less like a traditional festival lineup and more like a living portrait of Arkansas.

The weekend was the culmination of more than a year of cultural conversations, public surveys and community engagement events held throughout Arkansas. Organizers invited residents to share the stories, practices and traditions they felt best represented their communities, helping shape a festival rooted in the experiences of Arkansans themselves.

One of the weekend’s signature moments was the Arkansas Movement Music Parade, which began at the Clinton Presidential Library and led participants into Riverfront Park. Filled with rhythm, movement and community participation, the procession transformed the walk into a joyful celebration of shared civic life.

Organizers designed the event to celebrate the voices, skills and customs that continue to shape communities across the Natural State. Visitors could hear music rooted in place, watch artists at work and experience traditions that are often shared within families and communities rather than presented on large public stages.

The festival concluded Sunday with the Arkansas Gospel Homecoming and Dinner on the Grounds, inspired by longstanding traditions of sacred music, fellowship and shared meals. The closing gathering brought the weekend back to one of its central ideas: Arkansas culture is not something preserved behind glass. It is something sung, cooked, crafted, danced and shared.

North Little Rock honors retiring Chief Patrick Thessing and welcomes a new era of leadership.

orth Little Rock marked both the close of one chapter and the beginning of another this summer as Police Chief Patrick Thessing retired following nearly 31 years in law enforcement.

Residents, city leaders and fellow officers gathered June 30 at North Little Rock City Hall to celebrate Thessing’s career and the partnerships he built with law enforcement agencies throughout Central Arkansas. His work with neighboring departments helped strengthen regional cooperation and improve the way officers share training, technology and information.

During his tenure as chief, Thessing helped move the department toward more technology-driven policing. Among those advancements was the implementation of real-time crime center capabilities, allowing officers in North Little Rock and Little Rock to access information such as security-camera feeds and other live data that may assist them in the field.

He also helped establish a joint police academy that allows North Little Rock to train officers alongside recruits from smaller departments. The collaborative approach provides agencies with access to training and resources they may not be able to offer independently while helping officers build relationships before they encounter one another in the field.

Thessing continued advocating for officer recruitment and retention near the end of his tenure. When North Little Rock approved new police contracts in 2025, he said the agreements were intended to encourage experienced officers to remain with the department while making open positions more attractive to new recruits.

The city soon turned its attention to the department’s next chapter.

Hayward Finks was selected as North Little Rock’s new police chief and formally sworn in during a ceremony at the North Little Rock Event Center. His appointment also made history, as Finks became the first Black police chief to lead the department. The city publicly invited residents to attend the ceremony and welcome its next chief.

Together, Thessing’s retirement and Finks’ appointment represent more than a change in command. They mark a meaningful leadership transition for a department building on decades of experience while preparing for a new era.

A BIRTHDAY BUILT ON BRICKS Malvern150 honors its railroad roots, brickmaking legacy and community spirit.

T

he city of Malvern threw itself a 150th birthday bash July 18, filling its historic downtown with music, food, shopping, contests and family activities from daybreak into the evening.

Malvern150 began with two pancake breakfasts hosted by local organizations before more than 100 vendors, downtown businesses and entertainment areas opened across Main Street, Centennial Park and the city’s Entertainment Zone.

The Family Fun Zone offered a play area, foam party, water bounce house, historical costume contest, classic car show and Arkansas Game and Fish K-9 demonstrations. One of the most anticipated attractions was Malvern’s Brick Car Derby, in which bricks fashioned like automobiles raced down an inclined track.

Music filled two stages during the day. The Main Stage lineup included local guitarist Brady Roseberry, Dino D & the D Train Band, Heart tribute band Even It Up, ABBA-inspired group Waterloo and “I Am King,” a Michael Jackson tribute production. Foreshadow, Spa City Youngbloods and Dissentious performed at the Skatepark Stage.

The Historic Ritz Theatre joined the celebration with “Celebrating 150 Years of Style,” a fashion show that traveled through the decades with clothing inspired by different eras in Malvern’s history. Arkansas Yarn Co. also welcomed visitors during the statewide Arkansas Yarn Crawl.

The derby carried forward a tradition from Malvern Brickfest, the community festival held from 1981 through 2023 to celebrate the industry that helped shape the city. Abundant clay deposits have supported brick production in the area since the late 1800s, eventually earning Malvern the nickname “The Brick Capital of the World.” For generations of residents, activities such as the Brick Car Derby have kept that heritage visible — and fun.

Malvern’s roots stretch to the railroad development of the 1870s.

The community was incorporated July 22, 1876 and became the Hot Spring County seat in 1878. Its position along the Cairo and Fulton Railroad connected local agricultural, timber and mineral products with national markets and made Malvern an important transfer point for travelers headed to Hot Springs.

Brick manufacturing later became one of the city’s defining industries. After fires destroyed much of downtown in 1896 and 1897, the business district was rebuilt largely with brick, making the material part of Malvern’s economy, architecture and identity.

Malvern150 also looked toward the city’s future with its first skateboard competition. Participants were invited to “skate the bricks” at the Locust Street skatepark, while others competed in a baggo tournament or explored shops and displays throughout downtown.

By bringing its railroad roots, brickmaking heritage and present-day creativity together for one celebration, Malvern150 did more than mark an anniversary. It honored the generations that built the city while inviting today’s residents to help shape its next 150 years.

Long before they were celebrating 55 years of marriage, Stan and Donna May began building another legacy together. In 1985, the longtime educators founded The Family Farm Christian Day Camp, a ministry that has introduced generations of children to faith, friendship and outdoor adventure. More than 3,000 campers visited the farm this summer, continuing a tradition that has impacted young lives for more than four decades. Stan starts the camp each morning with prayer and the “Attitude Check!” When he says that, the kids yell, “Praise the Lord!” During the lunch break, Donna tells the kids stories about the camp and leads devotions.

HIS STORY: I am athletic, and I love watching sports, playing golf and telling the kids stories.

NATIVE OF: Hot Springs.

EDUCATION: I earned a Master of Science in Education from Southern Arkansas University.

WORK: I was a longtime football coach at Benton School District. I was a principal and athletic director at Magnet Cove until

retirement. Also, Donna and I founded The Family Farm Christian Day Camp in Glen Rose in 1985 and continue to operate it.

AWARDS: I was an All-American in football and Coach of the Year five times. The Mountain Pine football field is named after me Stanley May Field), where I played and coached in the Arkansas All-Star Game.

HOBBIES: I enjoy playing golf.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES: We host Men of Valor once a month at the Big Red Barn, and I lead a prayer and devotion.

At these events, men of all ages gather, have Bible study or devotions and eat together.

HER STORY: I am kind-hearted and a hard worker who gets things done.

he couple first met at a crowded event in Hot Springs, where Stan asked several coaches about Donna. They told him she was a cheerleader at Henderson, so he approached her and struck up a conversation.

Donna told him she was seeing someone. Later that day, Stan found her again. The conversation was much the same, and so was her answer — until he asked, “You’re not married, are you?” Donna said, “No.” “Be here Monday afternoon,” he replied.

She told him she had to work, but she was there. The minute she walked through the door, Stan was waiting.

They made a date, but he had to cancel because he was a coach and needed to attend a track meet. He made another date for Saturday night, but Donna had to work. Stan said that was all right and offered to pick her up at 9 p.m.

Because weekends were usually quiet at work, Donna spent the evening reading the latest issue of Seventeen. At 8:45 p.m., she came across an article about what to watch for on a blind date. One warning advised girls not to let a date say he needed to stop by his apartment to pick up a coat or tie.

The first thing Stan said when they reached Hot Springs was that he needed to stop by his apartment and get a coat. “But that’s all he did,” Donna quipped. The rest is history.

They decided to marry before school started. The thought of spending months driving back and forth to see one another was more than either wanted.

Donna told her best friend, Barbara, who quickly took over the wedding planning. Donna arranged for her church and pastor, while Barbara and her husband, Jim, stood beside the couple on their wedding day. It was a sweet ceremony, though Donna remembers shaking in her white dress. That day marked the beginning of a marriage that will celebrate 55 years on Aug. 28.

Of all they have accomplished together, Stan and Donna say they are most proud of the camp they founded in 1985 with little more than faith and a prayer. What began as a dream has grown into a ministry serving about 300 campers each week during a nine-week summer season, with many lives changed over the past 40-plus years. “We are truly thankful for how God has provided and carried us through the years,” Donna said.

T

he best back-to-school recipes are the ones that bring everyone to the table without creating extra stress for the cook. I know how busy this time of year can be between getting everyone back into a routine, homework, sports and busy work schedules. Having a few quick, wholesome meals you can count on makes all the difference.

I’m always looking for recipes that make weeknight dinners a little less stressful, and these Easy Weeknight Chicken Enchiladas and a Mediterranean Steak Stir-Fry Bowl do exactly that.

The Easy Weeknight Chicken Enchiladas are cheesy, comforting, full of flavor and come together quickly, thanks to one of my favorite grocery store shortcuts. The shortcut is to purchase a rotisserie chicken to cut your prep time almost in half. All you have to do is remove and shred the meat, and

you’re well on your way. Another reason I love this recipe is that it uses ingredients many families keep on hand. I used a full jar of Pace Picante Sauce because it gives the enchiladas just the right amount of flavor without having to make homemade sauce. Sometimes simple really is best.

If you’re looking to save even more time, don’t hesitate to use a few other grocery store shortcuts. Some stores offer rotisserie chicken already pulled from the bone; most stores offer shredded Mexican cheese, sliced black olives and even sour cream in a squeeze bottle, which will make assembling the enchiladas even faster. Other tips are to shred the chicken a day or two in advance and to assemble the enchiladas the night before. Cover the baking dish tightly and refrigerate until you’re ready to bake. It’s a great feeling knowing dinner is already waiting for you after a long day.

CHICKEN ENCHILADAS Prep Time: 15 minutes (if chicken is deboned)

Cook Time: 25 minutes Serves: 6–8 1 rotisserie chicken, deboned and shredded (about 4–5 cups) 1 (24 oz.) jar Pace Picante Sauce 2 cups shredded Mexican cheese blend, divided 8–10 burrito-size flour tortillas 1 Tbsp. olive oil 2–3 Tbsp. taco seasoning ¼ cup water Sliced black olives, for garnish Sour cream, for serving Preheat oven to 350 F. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add shredded rotisserie chicken, taco seasoning and water. Stir well and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until the chicken is heated through and coated with the seasoning. Pour about 1 cup of the picante sauce into the skillet with the chicken and stir until everything is combined.

Prepare the baking dish: Spread about 1 cup of the remaining picante sauce evenly across the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.

Assemble the enchiladas: Spoon the chicken mixture down the center of each tortilla. Sprinkle with a little of the Mexican cheese blend, then roll the tortilla tightly and place it seam-side down in the prepared baking dish.

Top the enchiladas: Spoon the remaining picante sauce evenly over each enchilada, making sure they are covered. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top and bake uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the enchiladas are heated through.

Garnish and serve: Top with sliced black olives and a dollop of sour cream before serving.

Another easy back-to-school recipe is a Mediterranean Steak Stir-Fry Bowl. What I love about this recipe is that it doesn’t ask you to sacrifice flavor just because you’re short on time.

In about 35 minutes, you have a colorful meal that’s packed with tender beef, fresh vegetables, hearty brown rice and Mediterranean-inspired flavors that taste like you’ve spent much longer in the kitchen. For this recipe, I use ribeye steaks from Aldi because they’re already thinly sliced, which saves a step. I love finding little shortcuts like that. If you don’t have an Aldi in your area, don’t worry because most stores carry shaved beef, stir-fry beef, sandwich steak or thinly sliced sirloin, and any of those will work beautifully in this recipe.

If your family likes chicken better than steak, make the swap. If you have broccoli that needs to be used, throw it in. Have mushrooms, asparagus, green beans or extra peppers in the refrigerator? They’ll fit right in, too. Cooking should work for your family, not the other way around. Here’s another shortcut I highly recommend: Many stores sell onions, peppers, mushrooms, zucchini and squash already chopped. Buying prepped vegetables can easily save 10 to 15 minutes. I’m also a big fan of doing a little prep work on Sunday. Chop your vegetables, mix your seasoning blend and cook your brown rice ahead of time. Store everything in the refrigerator, and when it’s time to make dinner during the week, most of the work is already done.

As an empty nester, my weeknight dinners look a little different these days, but I still believe life is better when we gather around a homemade meal. Whether you’re cooking for a house full of kids while rushing from one activity to the next or simply trying to get a healthy dinner on the table after a long day, I hope the enchiladas and Stir-Fry bowl become recipes you come back to again and again.

STIR-FRY BOWL Prep Time: 20 minutes

(plus 15–30 minutes marinating)

Cook Time: 15 minutes Serves: 4–6 For the Mediterranean Seasoning Blend 3 Tbsp. Greek seasoning 1 tsp. ground cumin 1 tsp. ground coriander 1 Tbsp. smoked paprika (or sweet paprika)

Leftover seasoning can be stored in an airtight container for up to six months.

For the Steak 1½ lbs. thinly sliced ribeye steak 2 Tbsp. olive oil 1 Tbsp. low-sodium soy sauce 2–3 Tbsp. Mediterranean seasoning blend For the Stir-Fry 2 Tbsp. olive oil 1 medium yellow onion, sliced 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 red bell pepper, sliced 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced 1 zucchini, sliced into half-moons 1 yellow squash, sliced into half-moons ¼ cup low-sodium chicken broth Salt and black pepper, to taste For Serving 4 cups cooked brown rice ½ cup crumbled feta cheese (optional) Fresh parsley, chopped (optional) Lemon wedges (optional)

Prepare the seasoning: In a small bowl, combine the Greek seasoning, cumin, coriander and smoked paprika. Stir until well blended.

Season the steak: Place the sliced ribeye into a large zip-top bag or bowl. Add the olive oil, soy sauce and Mediterranean seasoning blend. Toss until every piece is evenly coated. Refrigerate for 15 to 30 minutes while preparing the vegetables.

Cook the steak: Heat 1 Tbsp. of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated steak and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned. Remove the steak and set aside.

Cook the aromatics: Add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil to the skillet, if needed. Add the sliced onion and cook 3 to 4 minutes until softened. Pour in chicken broth to deglaze the pan, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 to 45 seconds, just until fragrant.

Cook the vegetables: Add the bell peppers, zucchini and yellow squash. Season lightly with salt and black pepper. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender-crisp.

Return the cooked steak to the skillet and toss everything together until heated through, about 1 to 2 minutes.

Assemble the bowls: Spoon the cooked brown rice into serving bowls. Top with the steak and vegetables.

If desired, garnish with crumbled feta cheese, fresh parsley and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.

First Security Bank rallies its communities in support of the THV11 Summer Cereal Drive.

ince 2000, the THV11 Summer Cereal Drive has been one of the 501’s most recognizable reminders that when school doors close, hunger often opens.

What began as a simple idea from meteorologist Tom Brannon has grown into a statewide movement powered by businesses, schools, civic groups and families to fight summer hunger.

For more than a decade, First Security Bank has helped carry the drive’s mission forward. Vice President and CRA Officer Andrea H. Lewis leads the bank’s participation, coordinating dozens of branches across central Arkansas to support the cause.

“As a community bank, giving back to the communities we serve is at the heart of who we are,” Lewis said. “When school is out, many children lose access to the nutritious meals they rely on during the school year. Ensuring that our youth have the nourishment they need to learn, grow and thrive is incredibly important to us.”

Through a partnership with the Arkansas Foodbank, the drive ensures that both monetary and non-perishable breakfast item donations reach the families who need them most.

“One in four kids in Arkansas are food insecure,” Arkansas Foodbank Community Engagement Manager Lucee Lugo said.

“These donations help families bridge the gap while kids are home for summer break. While cereal is a large part of the drive, any non-perishable breakfast items are accepted.”

To date, more than five million breakfast items have been distributed to families across the Foodbank’s 33-county service area by more than 200 participating teams, businesses and organizations. First Security is among these supporters, collecting both cereal and monetary gifts that help the Foodbank purchase food in bulk and stretch every dollar into a full box of cereal.

“We are very grateful for First Security and all the work they put into the drive,” Lugo said. “Andrea is fantastic and we are blessed to have her and her team partner with us in this way.”

Employees volunteer at the Foodbank throughout the year, rally customers, organize jeans-day fundraisers and compete in friendly contests to see which location can collect the most cereal. Winners earn a staff lunch from the restaurant of their choice, but the real reward, Lewis said, is knowing their efforts directly support Arkansas families.

Janet Broadaway, a receptionist at a branch in Conway, was impressed by a donation from Pastor Houston White and his congregation at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.

“To my knowledge, they brought in the largest donation that our location [has received],” she said. “They brought 200 boxes of cereal and a check for $500.”

While this year’s drive marked First Security’s strongest results yet, Lewis understands that her team’s work is far from finished.

“While we are proud of reaching our highest results in our 11 years of participation, we know there are still more opportunities to engage our employees, customers and community partners,” Lewis said. “The goal is to continue creating a culture of giving and making a lasting difference for children and families across Arkansas.”

Looking toward the future, both Arkansas Foodbank and First Security share a common mantra: the 501 is stronger together.

“Each year, the cereal drive provides hundreds of thousands of breakfasts for families, raises awareness about food insecurity and inspires more people to get involved in the fight against hunger,” Lewis said. “Its continued growth demonstrates what can happen when communities come together focused on a common goal.”

A New Leash on Life Searcy opens one of Arkansas’ largest dog parks, with room for pets of every size to run, play and meet some new best friends.

D

ogs were not merely welcomed at Searcy’s newest park July 21 — they were the guests of honor. Dozens of residents and their four-legged companions gathered at the Carmichael Community Center for the grand opening of the Searcy Dog Park, a new space designed for exercise, socialization and plenty of off-leash fun.

Located at 801 S. Elm St., the park features separate fenced areas for large and small dogs, giving pets of different sizes room to play safely. A covered pavilion offers shade and seating for their owners, while a drinking station keeps canine visitors hydrated.

The larger project also was planned with shaded and sunny play areas, accessible pathways, waste stations, a walking trail, expanded parking and new lighting. The city describes the finished facility as one of the largest dog parks in Arkansas.

Planning and Development Director Richard Stafford designed the park in coordination with Davidson Engineering. The project replaces Searcy’s former dog park near Pioneer Village, whose site was designated for industrial development.

“This is a project that many residents have been excited about, and we’re thrilled to see it become a reality,” Mayor Mat Faulkner said. “We look forward to seeing families and their four-legged friends enjoy it for years to come.”

The dog park is the latest addition to Searcy’s parks and recreation system and gives residents another place to spend time outdoors — with no one having to leave a member of the family at home.

estled in northern Faulkner County are two unassuming small towns with big hearts for their shared school and its students. The agriculture and Future Farmers of America (FFA) programs in the Mount Vernon–Enola (MVE) School have a support system that is ahead of others in their classification, maybe even ahead of those in much larger areas. The communities step up to raise funds through a yearly dinner and auction, all to benefit students. Last year was phenomenal, with more than $80,000 raised in one evening!

What would drive this commitment? Denny Jobe, a longtime agriculture teacher at MVE, recognized the need to provide financial support to students in the FFA program.

Out of roughly 120 students in agriculture, 80 or so take an additional step and join FFA. That organization offers opportunities for students to hone their skills in subject

matter as well as public speaking through regional and state competitions.

Jobe set out to make certain all kids had the same opportunities. He gathered former students, supporters and community leaders in 2015 to form the MVE FFA Foundation, with a seven-member board. They had one goal that still guides them today: help students in their FFA program in whatever way they could.

“The original goal was funding scholarships. Our first-year target in 2017 was $15,000. We raised over $30,000, and it’s been growing every year. I taught agriculture at MVE for 25 years and I’m thrilled we’ve helped so many students,” Jobe said. He continues to provide personal support and is pleased that Seth Taylor, the current agriculture teacher and FFA sponsor, is carrying on the legacy.

The foundation recognizes that there are several pathways for students’ success in life. Scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors entering in one of four categories: colleges or universities, trade schools, employed in a trade (funds used to purchase tools or pay for licensure) or entering military service.

The scholarship selection process, handled by a volunteer board, is rigorous and includes personal interviews with judges, the student’s grades, participation in FFA and other activities, character and life goals. Even though scholarship funds take priority, there has been ample support to purchase supplies for the next round of students. The foundation also pays student entry fees to participate in shows as well as lodging if required for district and state FFA contests. They make certain all students who want to invest their time and energy into projects and activities have the financial support needed to make it happen.

Taylor’s training and experiences all led up to his return as a teacher. He studied agriculture at Arkansas State University, then earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from the University of Arkansas. “I got so much from this program as a student and was thrilled to have the opportunity to return to the community and school I love. After teaching at Nemo Vista School for four years, I returned to my roots, my dream coming true. I inherited a thriving program in an ideal setting and I am so grateful. My goal is simple: keep it going and keep it growing,” he said.

Tori Brock, an MVE native and loan officer at Farm Credit of Western Arkansas, is typical of the school’s supporters. She served on the original board, helping develop the blueprint. “I was highly involved in the MVE FFA Chapter while in school through showing hogs and goats and competing in judging teams and leadership competitions. I knew I wanted to continue serving a community and a program that played an important role in my upbringing. Volunteering allowed me to give back in a meaningful way, providing students opportunities they otherwise might not have had,” Brock said. The current foundation board includes Troy Wetherley as chair, Amanda Tucker as treasurer, and members Jason Ingram, John Shock, Brad Heck, Kenny Hartness and Emily Harned.

It’s hard to capture what students learn through MVE’s agriculture classes and FFA involvement. There are the obvious skills of carpentry, metal fabrication and construction, all of value no matter one’s occupation.

Undergirding practical skills are what are often called “soft skills,” such as working as a team, speaking extemporaneously and conducting meetings. As a personal goal, Taylor wants students to model good character, strong work ethic and integrity. The agriculture program in MVE is not only ahead of the class, but it is in a class of its own.

or one week each summer, about 50 Arkansas teenagers step into an entirely different world. They become ambassadors, diplomats, negotiators, problem-solvers.

Instead of worrying about homework or football practice, they debate humanitarian crises, negotiate peace agreements and represent countries from around the globe inside simulated United Nations committees.

It’s all part of the World International Affairs Camp at the University of Central Arkansas, a residential program that introduces high school students to diplomacy, global affairs

and leadership through hands-on learning. “This is the type of camp you would generally see coming out of elite universities,” said Dr. Bailey Fairbanks, director of the camp and associate professor in UCA’s Department of Government, Public Service and International Studies. “To be able to bring something like that to Arkansas is really special.”

Marking its eighth year, the camp welcomed approximately 50 students from across the state for six days of workshops, simulations and activities designed to broaden their understanding of the world while strengthening skills that could benefit them throughout their lives.

This year’s campers came from public, private, charter and homeschool programs in communities large and small, including Conway, Little Rock, Bentonville, Russellville, Hot Springs and beyond. Selected through a competitive application process, they submitted essays explaining their interest in international affairs along with letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors or advisers.

The program is funded through an Arkansas Department of Education AEGIS grant, allowing students to attend at no cost. Room, board, meals and programming are all provided.

“We don’t care if you’re red, blue, yellow or purple,” Fairbanks said. “We’re not teaching politics. We’re teaching international relations.”

During the week, students learned how nations communicate, cooperate and sometimes disagree as they explored global challenges from multiple perspectives.

The camp began with interactive workshops introducing students to international relations, diplomacy, the United Nations and different forms of government. This year’s curriculum included new activities developed by Fairbanks to make the material even more engaging, including lessons inspired by the popular book “Theories of International Relations and Zombies.”

The Syrian Emergency Task Force (SETF) presented an inspiring and informative program at the Arkansas and the World International Affairs Summer Camp. The evening began with a short video from M. Night Shyamalan about the humanitarian crisis in Syria and SETF’s efforts to address the needs of Syrian refugees and citizens.

Students participated in a lively question-and-answer session with Jerry Adams, chair of the SETF Board of Directors, and Natalie Larrison, director of humanitarian programs and outreach. SETF Founder and Executive Director Mouaz Moustafa also joined the group virtually from Washington, D.C., via Zoom. The discussion explored the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria and the organization’s mission to support people affected by conflict and displacement.

Campers also participated in SETF’s impactful Letters of Hope project.

Launched in 2016, the program reminds Syrians living amid war and displacement that they have not been forgotten. Through heartfelt letters and messages, international supporters offer encouragement and solidarity to Syrian children and families, particularly those in northwest Syria. The exchange fosters a sense of global connection and compassion while assuring those enduring hardship that they are seen, valued and supported.

The program left campers with a deeper understanding of the power of advocacy and the importance of personal action in global affairs. By writing their own Letters of Hope, students became part of an international effort to uplift and comfort communities facing immense challenges.

“It sounds funny,” she said, “but it’s a great way to teach students how different countries approach the same problem from different perspectives.”

Students also sharpened practical skills through workshops on research, argument development and public speaking. Rather than simply listening to lectures, they participated in simulations, group activities and discussions that prepared them for the week’s culminating exercises. Each student represented an assigned country, learning not only about that nation’s history and priorities but also how to advocate for its positions during mock United Nations sessions.

“They’re acting as their country,” Fairbanks said. “They’re learning how countries communicate, how they negotiate and what concessions they’re willing to make to solve international problems.”

Evening activities included Ping Pong Diplomacy tournaments, spirited Uno competitions, campus scavenger hunts and marathon games of Risk that continued throughout the week. “It gives students time to build relationships,” Fairbanks said. “They interact with counselors, guest speakers and each other in ways that create friendships that last well beyond camp.”

Students also worked together on projects related to Sustainable Development Goals, creating presentations and posters addressing issues such as clean water, quality education, climate action and global health. One year, a group of students created an intricate underwater scene illustrating ocean conservation.

Another group designed an elaborate depiction of justice and equality. “The creativity they bring is phenomenal,” Fairbanks said. “I never know what I’m going to learn from them.”

Throughout the week, guest speakers introduced students to careers in diplomacy, nonprofit organizations, international development and public service. Faculty members from across UCA shared their experiences living and working around the world, giving campers firsthand insight into cultures and careers they may never have considered.

Fairbanks believes those experiences are especially valuable for Arkansas students. “With social media, students are constantly receiving information that’s driven by algorithms,” she said.

“If no one introduces them to international relations or global issues, they may never encounter them. This camp gives them an opportunity to think beyond what normally appears in their daily lives.”

Fairbanks recalled one former camper who arrived with little knowledge of international affairs. Today, he is studying

international relations at American University and has returned to UCA as a camp counselor. Another counselor first attended camp after his family fled Ukraine. Now he shares his experiences with a new generation of students, helping them better understand diplomacy and international conflict through a deeply personal lens.

For many campers, the week doesn’t end when they leave campus. It serves as a gateway to another longstanding UCA tradition. Founded in 1967, the Arkansas Model United Nations Conference is one of the nation’s longest-running high school Model UN programs. Each November, more than 500 students representing more than 100 countries gather at UCA for two days of committee sessions, debate and diplomacy.

The conference was established by Professor Simms McClintock at what was then Arkansas State Teachers College and has become a tradition for generations of Arkansas students.

Dr. Mark Mullenbach has been involved with every conference since 2001 and founded the World International Affairs Camp in 2017 after recognizing there were no comparable summer opportunities in Arkansas for students interested in diplomacy and global affairs. “The purpose was to provide an educational program for high school students who wanted to learn more about global affairs, diplomacy and the United Nations,” Mullenbach said.

Over the decades, the conference has attracted students from Arkansas as well as neighboring states, including Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana.

Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference never stopped. Rather than canceling, organizers transitioned to virtual conferences in 2020 and 2021, ensuring students could continue participating. “I’m proud we continued the program,” Mullenbach said. “It would have been easy to let it end, but students and teachers appreciated that we adapted.”

“Students have the opportunity to step into the shoes of diplomats representing United Nations member states,” he said. “Rather than simply reading about another country or international politics, they experience it firsthand.”

Participants spend weeks researching assigned countries before delivering speeches, negotiating with fellow delegates and drafting resolutions addressing global issues. Along the way, they develop skills in writing, public speaking, research, critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving. “Those skills benefit students regardless of what careers they ultimately pursue,” Mullenbach said.

Many alumni have gone on to careers in law, government, diplomacy, education, military service, international business and public service. Others simply carry with them a broader understanding of the world and their place within it.

“The Arkansas and the World: International Affairs Summer Camp reflects UCA’s longstanding commitment to programs that connect the university with the communities we serve. By bringing talented students from across Arkansas together to explore complex issues, consider different perspectives and work toward shared solutions, the camp helps them develop the confidence, judgment, and skills they will need in college, in their careers, and as engaged citizens. For generations, UCA has prepared individuals who go on to strengthen their communities through education, service, professional work and civic leadership. Fairbanks hopes the program continues expanding in the years ahead, perhaps adding camps focused on pre-law, public service and other academic interests.

“It’s about creating pipelines,” she said. “We’re helping students develop these skills early and connecting them to opportunities that can shape their futures.”

“I hope parents know these opportunities exist for students who are interested in global affairs and diplomacy,” Mullenbach said. “Students from Arkansas benefit greatly from learning about global issues, but they also learn so much from interacting with other students who share those interests.”

For one remarkable week each July and another every November, Arkansas students discover that global leadership doesn’t begin in New York, Washington or an Ivy League classroom. Sometimes, it begins in Conway.

TAKING FLIGHT UCA students find new perspectives through study abroad in New Zealand

hile high school students explored the world from UCA’s campus this summer, 14 UCA students took their learning more than 7,000 miles away. They enjoyed a life-changing experience in May as part of a study-abroad trip to New Zealand.

And that was exactly what Dr. Denise Demers, department chair and associate professor in the Department of Health Sciences, wanted.

“I come home changed every time with new perspectives about myself and the world, which then impacts every part of my life,” said Demers, who has been at UCA since 2014. “I love to see how the community functions together, the infrastructure and the general ‘feel’ of a new place. I love exploring new things and seeing the beauty in the grandiose as well as the everyday mundane parts of the rigmarole of life.

“For students, I would expect the same — that they come home changed. Each summer I hear things like, ‘I now know I can travel and see new things.’ ‘I did something out of my comfort zone, and now I feel confident to do more.’”

Demers and Dr. Doug Voss, professor of logistics and supply chain management in the College of Business, led UCA in New Zealand: Business and Health Sciences. Students from majors as varied as exercise science, radiography, communication sciences and disorders, health promotion and a variety of business majors, as well as MBA and Master of Social Work graduate students, spent three weeks learning about health and business in New Zealand.

According to uca.edu, the trip included opportunities to visit a seal colony, bathe in natural hot salt pools, go on a whale-watching expedition in Kaikoura, hike through national parks, and tour ports as well as healthcare facilities. Students learned about New Zealand culture, the country’s emphasis on sustainability and how residents co-exist with nature in the South Pacific.

As a Ph.D. student, Demers participated in a study abroad program in Vienna and has led study abroad trips at UCA since 2016. Voss, who will begin his 20th year at UCA this fall, had not had that formal experience but had traveled enough that he knew by 2020 that he was interested in leading one.

Generally, two faculty members lead a trip. Although Demers and Voss hadn’t met, her daughter had babysat for his family. Since 2023, the two have led students to Amsterdam, New Zealand and to Vienna twice.

“She loves Vienna, and I do, too,” Voss said. “She’d like to go there every year; I like variety. They’re all so unique and cool in their own different ways. It’s sort of like trying to pick your favorite child.” He said New Zealand was very scenic with “probably the friendliest people I’ve ever met anywhere.”

As with any study-abroad opportunity, food was a major experience. “New Zealand is mostly known for its meat pies, but they’re in such close proximity to so many Asian nations, they had really good Thai food, really good Malaysian food and Chinese and Japanese,” Voss said.

To earn credit, students had to write an essay each day based on their activities and guest lectures. But that was only a small part of their education.

“People get to learn together, be together and see together — all of those things that make study abroad awesome,” Demers said. “You’re out in the world living it and not just sitting in class reading about it or listening to it.”

Kiwanis Club donates $58,100 to nonprofits serving children

he Kiwanis Club of Conway donated $58,100 this summer to 17 nonprofit organizations serving children in and around Conway. The club raised the funds from its annual Toad Suck Daze 10K/5K Run and Tadpole Trot held during the Toad Suck Daze festival in Conway during the first weekend in May. The 10K/5K and Tadpole Trot attracted 1,714 participants this year, and the amount raised from registration fees, T-shirt sales and sponsorships is a record, according to Cole Schanandore, chair of the club’s Toad Suck Daze Run Committee.

“Each year, the Toad Suck Daze Run allows the Kiwanis Club of Conway to make a meaningful difference for children in our community,” he said. “The results from the 2026 race far exceeded our goal and only fueled us to push harder for next year. We are so thankful for a community that continues to rally behind this event and its purpose.”

The Kiwanis Club started the Toad Suck Daze 10K fundraiser in 1982. In 1986, the race was combined with the Randy Baker 8K, begun in 1984 by The First National Bank of Conway in memory of employee Baker, who died of cancer. The Toad Suck Daze Run continues to be held in his memory. Besides Schanandore, other essential volunteers who make the event a great success include David DeRosa, Jessica Faulkner, Jerry Harrison, Cliff Henry, Patrick Lewis and Marc Shock.

EDUCATION: Scholarships of $1,000 are given to five or six graduating seniors in Faulkner County high schools who plan to enroll at Central Baptist College, Hendrix College or UCA.

As of April 8, the Kiwanis Club became a 501(c)(3) public charity under the Internal Revenue Code. The club applied for this exemption to sustain and increase the level of dollars it raises to fund service projects. Donors can now deduct contributions made to the club.

o all outward appearances, Adley Bass of Greenbrier lives an idyllic childhood. A 9-year-old about to enter fourth grade, “Addy” loves basketball, volleyball and softball. She enjoys playing with the two family dogs, a golden retriever named Jack and a Cavapoo named Maggie.

The youngest of four, she has two older brothers, Eli, 15, and Brooks, 11, and an older sister, Braylee, 17, to watch over her.

Her parents, Jordan and Tyler Bass, said their daughter loves music and is looking forward to when she’s old enough to help lead worship with her dad, the music pastor at Second Baptist Church in Conway and Greenbrier.

No one could have guessed that she was experiencing a health challenge that affected every aspect of her life. The clues were slight. Even though seemingly happy, talkative and always singing, Addy was having some academic problems at her school, Springhill Elementary in the Greenbrier Public School District. She always wanted to turn the television volume up.

And her parents said they had to repeat themselves multiple times to get tasks done, but that seemed very normal for a kid her age. None of these issues seemed serious. “We thought she was just a typical kid,” her parents said.

But then Addy failed a hearing test administered by the school nurse, Kristi Williams, back in January. Williams immediately contacted Addy’s parents. After she failed a second hearing test

at school, they were referred to Arkansas Children’s Hospital for further testing. It turned out Addy had a hole in her right eardrum and could not hear out of that ear.

“Once we figured out she failed her hearing test, the school jumped right in to help,” Jordan said. “She was having some problems with reading and comprehension, so they pulled her out into a smaller group and they moved her closer to the front. At Children’s, they have a program where they come into the public schools to help provide resources to the school and to the child.”

Addy’s parents give a great deal of credit to Springhill Elementary’s staff and its principal, Holly King. “She really rallied behind Adley and got everything rolling. Once they gave her that extra help, her ATLAS test scores went up tremendously, and she grew 36 points in reading and 23 in math. Had Springhill not noticed and put those things into place, we would still be struggling,” Jordan said.

Addy underwent a tympanoplasty at Children’s back in June, and her hearing is steadily improving. “They expect she will get all of her hearing back within three months,” Jordan said.

“When we were walking out of Children’s, Addy’s shoes were squeaking when she walked and she said, ‘Mom, I can hear my sandals!’ We never knew she couldn’t hear all these things.”

Of course, being able to hear will help her in everything she does, but it will also let her enjoy her favorite things even more. Addy loves to sing and she loves music.

“She sings all the time,” said her dad, Tyler. “She always wants to hook the phone up to the car and play her music as loud as she can.”

“I even sing in the shower!” Addy said, laughing. That love of music came naturally, as her dad’s family are all musically inclined. “Addy’s older sister, Braylee, is 17 and she helps lead worship with her dad. Addy’s been begging to be able to do the same thing, but her dad jokingly said she has to be 13 before she gets on the stage,” Jordan said. “She’s counting it down. Addy is looking forward to her chance to start music lessons.

As the youngest of four, she wants to do it all.”

The surgery hasn’t slowed her down. She loves to draw and is a very good artist, according to her mom. She stays busy playing softball with her Greenbrier league team, the Bananas. And maybe best of all, she is getting to grow up with both sets of grandparents close by.

“Tyler’s parents live right here in Greenbrier, and my parents, Lewis and Sherry Peeler, just moved to Wooster about a year and a half ago from Wynne, where I grew up,” said Jordan. “Grandma always had Sunday dinner every week, and we all gathered around the table when I was growing up and I’ve missed that. So now, we can do it again. It’s good memories for the kids.”

A beach trip to Orange Beach was another highlight of Addy’s summer. “I found a lot of shells, and I love to go swimming there,” she said.

More of Addy’s favorite things include baking with her grandmother, Sherry, “Lolly,” and playing card games with Tyler’s mom, “Nonnie.” And she really, really loves “Zombies,” a fun musical Disney Channel movie series about zombie students integrating into a normal high school. “She can sing every song,” said Jordan, laughing.

And thanks to the quick action of her school staff and care from her doctors and family, Addy will now be able to enjoy all the things she loves even more.

GROW SMART What to do, and what to leave alone, as summer gives way to fall.

It is hard to believe that August is upon us. School is beginning, and fall will soon be in the air. In all honesty, fall is my favorite season in the garden, and I thought it would be fun to discuss some late summer projects, including a few things I consistently see gardeners doing that should not be done right now.

all is the best time to install new landscapes, including planting cool-season vegetables, spring bulbs, and new trees and shrubs. Gardeners have questions about when to prune, deadhead, or fertilize, and how much to water. Optimizing these tasks will lead to even more success in your landscape.

Pruning: This is a tough one for OCD people like me but let me share some basic rules of thumb. In MOST cases, you want to avoid any heavy pruning in fall. Plants that bloom on old wood have already set their buds for next season. Stay away from magnolias, lilacs, forsythia, quince, many old-time hydrangeas and, of course, azaleas. If you prune now, you will see very limited blooms next year. You don’t want to prune evergreens because pruning will force new growth that may be damaged with the first hard frost, as they will not have had time to harden off.

The best rule of thumb is to prune anything that flowers right after its flowering cycle as hard as you would like for shape and size. Any evergreens that don’t flower, prune after the last hard frost, usually in early March.

Deadheading: You can always remove dead flowers from any plant at any time. This will help in forcing new flowers. Perennials can still provide a nice fall showing if you remove spent flowers before they go to seed. Deadheading is not necessary but can help with cleaner-looking plants and additional flowers within their blooming cycle.

Fertilization: This is another tough topic for gardeners at this time of year. This late in the season, many plants do not need to

be fertilized. You do not want to push a lot of new growth that will then have tender foliage for the winter season. There are some exceptions: Annual flowers can always use additional fertilizer to help them perk up from the brutal summer heat. Roses can also be fed once more as they will continue to bloom well into early winter.

Your lawn is another exception. Giving your lawn a good fall weed and feed will assist in keeping it green and healthy and limit winter weeds. Avoid fertilizing your entire landscape, as many plants will do better without it.

As for new plantings, consistently use organic fertilizer or a root stimulator. This will help get a good root system started before the winter.

Watering: After a dry summer, we need to work on getting the soil moist again. Plants need slow, deep watering to get moisture down to the root level rather than running off the surface. With new plantings, never rely on rain or irrigation systems, as most of that water does not reach the roots. Many new plants require water at least once a week even through the winter season. Plants are not growing in their foliage, but their roots are still active.

After this harsh summer, a trip to the garden center is always fun to see what is new and to discuss your plans for fall and winter.

Formulate your plans, get out in the garden and continue to create your paradise. After that, all that is left is to find some late summer shade, sip on your favorite cold beverage and enjoy the beauty of your hard work, because anything else would be uncivilized.

Award-winning craftsman Sandy Hudspeth turns forgotten pieces into unforgettable works of art.

S

andy Hudspeth has a way of seeing potential long before anyone else does. For more than 20 years, he has reclaimed, reimagined, rebuilt, repurposed and restored more than 3,000 square feet into an entertainment space impressive enough to win Best Man Cave in KABZ-FM 103.7 The Buzz’s contest.

From the outside, though, you’d never guess it. The unassuming metal building gives no hint of the artistry inside. What looks like discarded cars, parts and signs are simply future projects waiting for his hands to transform them.

But one step inside and the workshop exterior gives way to an interior experience. Soft overhead lighting, mixed with the glow from signage, sets the tone for a good-time space built with intent.

Classic arcade games, pinball machines, pool tables, air hockey, shuffleboard, an antique jukebox and refreshment areas invite a crowd without feeling cluttered. Wall-to-wall, antiques like gas pumps, signs, lights and model cars create a harmony of nostalgia and craftsmanship. But the real showstoppers are what Hudspeth has done with classic car bodies.

From rusted and forgotten pieces, he transformed the tail end of a 1956 Chevrolet Nomad, a 1956 Bel-Air and both a 1957 and a 1961 Cadillac Deville into high-value seating, along with the front of a 1964 Deville.

His most difficult build was a full-size bar engineered from a 1963 Chevrolet Impala. He used the entire side of the car, headlights to taillights, topped with a bar edged in diamond plate. He stopped the bar just past the back door to create a restaurant-style booth between the tail fins. And yes, all the lights work.

“I only paid $250 for it. It was all rusted out, with no floor or anything,” he said. Because the building has no overhead garage door, Hudspeth built the bar in three panels so it would fit through the walk-through door, bolting it together once inside.

He had prepped and primed the pieces in advance but painted the bar where it sits, using plastic to protect the floor and surrounding area. Bar stools with flame-patterned seats complete the look.

Kim and Sandy Hudspeth love life at Hudspeth Acres, where everything reflects Sandy’s talent for giving old objects a new purpose. With a Gulf globe and other period-style details, he transformed a vintage gasoline pump into a one-of-a-kind mailbox — the kind that comes complete with a “Contains Lead” warning and a whole lot of history.

In other areas, Hudspeth built a smaller bar from a Coca-Cola icebox and installed an ice maker beneath the bar top. Lights above the shuffleboard are made from two 1957 Bel-Airs, and a 2000 Jaguar front end serves as a storage trunk for pool table supplies. Near it hangs a poster he found at an auction of Paul Newman in the movie “The Hustler.” “I love to play pool. I probably play 12 to 15 hours a week,” he said.

“And everything in here works,” Hudspeth said. “I’ve always worked at fixing and restoring things.” He credits his dad for encouraging him to tear apart broken things and figure out how they worked. If something couldn’t be fixed, nothing was lost, but something was always learned.

Even the bathroom is a work of art. He designed a urinal from an old beer keg, using a pressure valve to shut off the water. He engineered a vanity from a toolbox, shaped a sink bowl from a wheel rim and repurposed a gas pump handle as the faucet.

And yes, there’s a bedroom, with a bed made from a 1956 Chevrolet truck bed. The tailgate drops down to reveal a hideaway space for shoes. Dash parts form the inside of the footboard, and Hudspeth added an electrical port for phone charging. The back of the cab serves as the headboard and a repurposed toolbox for drawer space.

He has a personal connection or a story about everything in his space. A fishing rod and net that once belonged to his father hang on the bedroom wall. “If you ask me about anything in here, I can pretty much tell you where I got it and what I did to it,” he said. He pointed to a gargoyle from “Ghostbusters” and a clock from “Back to the Future.” Every piece has a past and now a new purpose.

It’s no wonder Kimberly, Hudspeth’s wife of 22 years, nominated him for The Buzz’s contest.

They weren’t sure his nomination went through, however, until he received a call from David Bazzel, co-host of “Morning Mayhem,” notifying him he had won the overall Best Man Cave.

Does Kim spend much time in the space? “Oh, no. Only when we have gatherings with friends or family,” she laughed. The devoted husband hopes to change that. He’s building her an indoor pool and hot tub in the back. “She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” he said, emotion catching in his voice.

Meant to bring people together to laugh, share stories and have a good time, Sandy’s Man Cave at Hudspeth Acres in Houston is all that and more. It’s art. It’s nostalgia. It’s a legacy of skills passed from father to son. It’s proof that something old, broken, worn or tossed aside can be given new life and new purpose in the hands of someone who can see beyond the surface.

If only all of us could do that, not just with things, but with people, too.

“This is a great story about joy, about how to support each other as a community, how to be good neighbors and take care of each other,” said Beth Franks, senior vice president of marketing for Pediatrics Plus. “When a community works together, we can overcome challenges in a really positive, beneficial way for everyone.”

Pediatrics Plus provides occupational, physical and speech therapy, as well as applied behavior analysis, for children with special needs in a developmental preschool, outpatient or farm setting.

The beloved donkey was rehomed to the farm on June 26 to comply with city code enforcement regulations.

His former owners, Rory and Niki Thompson, live along Tucker Creek in Conway, which is bordered by a popular walking and bike trail. Darius’s pen was a frequent stop for walkers and cyclists.

To understand why Darius was rehomed, you have to go back to the spring. The Thompsons moved into their home, adjacent to Tucker Creek, in January. Their adult children, Colby and Cohen, were in the process of leaving the nest, and the Thompsons decided it was time for a pet. Having taken care of horses in high school, Rory took the lead. He began a painstaking search for the right pet.

Eventually, a miniature donkey came to mind. With nearly four acres, including some undeveloped land, they believed they had plenty of space. “They tend to be very friendly, social animals,” said Rory. “It appeared that we had enough land to accommodate a donkey under city code.”

After initial confirmation from the city, the couple eventually found a small standard-size donkey. “He had a good personality. He was 5 years old, and donkeys live 40 to 50 years,” said Rory, quipping, “He was going to be my new son.”

On arrival day, the donkey captured Niki’s heart. “A donkey wasn’t my first choice, but he was just so sweet and gentle,” she said. “He would immediately come up to anyone at the fence.”

One question remained: what would they call the donkey? Rory created an Instagram page and began a poll to name him. He explained the results: “It was during March Madness and Darius Acuff was extremely popular. Tucker, for Tucker Creek, was also popular.” Thus, the legend of Darius the Donkey began. His Instagram page soon filled with selfies from fans, many of whom went to the walking trail just to visit and sometimes feed Darius.

His favorite foods are bread, apples, carrots and grass.

Unfortunately, the city did not agree that it was the best location for a donkey. One problem was noise complaints. Donkeys bray when they greet people they know, and it can be louder than a barking dog. Eventually the Thompsons decided it was better to be good neighbors than to fight city code enforcement.

Rehoming Darius was a difficult decision for the Thompsons.

After deciding to relocate him, they searched high and low to find him a “perfect fit” and chose the Pediatrics Plus Farm located outside city limits.

“We chose Peds Plus because we wanted to keep up with him and we like what they are doing with animals,” said Rory. “They are using the farm and animals in the therapy program for kids who are patients there. We thought that would be a perfect fit for him because he is so good with kids.”

The Thompsons said they are still receiving inquiries from fans of all ages who miss the gentle, friendly donkey. He mentioned a woman in a wheelchair whose husband would take her to visit Darius. “She considered him her service animal. I still have people coming by who don’t know yet that he is gone.”

To protect the privacy of children receiving therapy there, the farm is not open to the public, but there is no reason to worry about Darius, according to Farmer Josh Hosman, who tends to the Pediatrics Plus Farm.

“He loves his feed and hay,” he said. “He sings (brays) often when he sees the kids and other animals that he likes.”

Darius also has a new best friend, Millie Clover, who is a female donkey, along with other barnyard besties, including two Highland cows and a flock of chickens. Even though he’s no longer a social media star, Darius is a fan favorite at the farm!

hen Phyllis Hodges was a student at Hall High School 50 years ago, she never imagined she would one day become an international author. But today, she is driven by a passion for helping young people see themselves in the stories of the past.

Her book series, which includes “8 Years of Unforgettable History,” can be found in school districts, public libraries and museums in Arkansas, as well as in several African countries. It’s a remarkable accomplishment for someone who said she didn’t even like history.

“When I was young, African American history was hardly touched on, and when it was, we heard only about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Sojourner Truth and Booker T. Washington,” she said.

Through her books, she hopes children understand that everyone has a story worth telling and that it is never too early to make a positive difference in their own corner of the world.

Guided by deep faith and an entrepreneurial spirit, Hodges has pursued a wide range of careers and meaningful ventures, including work in television, ministry, health and wellness. In 2000, she opened The Carousel Fit-4-Life Wellness Center, a

business dedicated to women’s health and fitness. Listening to the inspiring stories of clients who overcame serious challenges motivated her to write her first book, “A Divine Connection.”

Several years later, during Barack Obama’s historic rise to national office, Hodges felt compelled to document the significance of the election of America’s first biracial president for her family.

Encouraged by others, she expanded that idea. She compiled and published “8 Years of Unforgettable History” (2018), a work celebrating notable Arkansas trailblazers such as Lottie Shackelford, the first female mayor of Little Rock; Judge Joyce Elise Williams Warren; and Jeffery Henderson, an Olympic gold medalist in track and field from North Little Rock. Also included are lesser-known pioneers such as fashion designer Martha Dixon, E-STEM student Jade Crosby and Chief Warrant Officer Pamela Huff.

Hodges believes it is essential for young people to know that history makers are not just names in textbooks. Many are still among us today. She calls them “living history keepsakes”— real people whose lives and achievements can inspire the next generation in a personal and powerful way.

From school libraries and Arkansas museums to collections across several African countries, author Phyllis Hodges’ books continue to inspire readers near and far.

In 2021, she published “Girl Power,” a tribute to extraordinary yet lesser-known women whose courage, talent and determination deserve recognition. She followed it with “Girl Power 2” in 2024, continuing her mission of “shining a light on unsung role models who could easily be your neighbor.”

“Book Worms” (2021) is her most personal work. Co-written with her husband, Byron Hodges, the book tells the story of their love and enduring partnership.

Married when she was just 16 and he was a college junior, the couple has now shared 52 years together. The book recounts how they found a shared love for tiny libraries during the pandemic.

Today, she devotes much of her time as a personal assistant to her 88-year-old mother, Rose Wright, who travels with Hodges when she goes on book tours. She lovingly describes her mother as her first teacher, best friend, confidant and angel in disguise. She and Byron are proud parents of two children and grandparents of three.

avoiding unnecessary outdoor cleaning, fixing leaks quickly and being more mindful about everyday indoor water use can all help reduce demand.

That is why Conway Corp has asked residential and business customers to continue curtailing non-essential water use.

Planning for the Future

entral Arkansas continues to experience unusually dry conditions, and that means water conservation remains critically important for our community. Brewer Lake — Conway’s primary water source — has been significantly affected by the ongoing lack of rainfall, and while water is still available, the lake is not being replenished at the rate we would normally expect this time of year.

Why Conservation Matters

It is important to remember this situation is being driven by drought, not by Conway running out of water and not by sudden increases in customer demand. In fact, Conway Corp’s water sales have remained relatively stable over the past decade, and recent usage has not reflected an unusual spike.

The challenge is simple: less rainfall means less replenishment, and conservation is one of the most effective tools the community has to help protect available supply until more normal weather patterns return.

Conservation Takes Everyone

The curtailment request applies to everyone — residential customers, businesses, industries and institutions.

The encouraging news is that customer efforts are making a difference.

Since curtailment began, Conway Corp has seen meaningful reductions in demand, and employees working directly with major water users across the community have identified additional opportunities to conserve. Some industrial customers have reduced water usage by more than 30 percent, and when that is combined with the efforts of thousands of residential customers, the impact becomes measurable across the system.

Small actions may not seem significant on their own, but across an entire community, those gallons add up fast. That is how curtailment helps protect water for essential household use, health care, firefighting and the many services people rely on every day.

Conservation is also important because water systems are built around both long-term planning and day-to-day stewardship. Conway Corp has spent decades preparing for the community’s future water needs, and that work continues today.

Over the next five years, we expect to invest more than $75 million in water system improvements, including expanding the Roger Q. Mills Water Treatment Plant, constructing a second raw water line from Brewer Lake to Conway, replacing and upgrading aging infrastructure and developing additional long-term water supply partnerships for the region.

Those investments are essential, but even the best infrastructure cannot replace rainfall during a drought. Water projects take years — often decades — to plan and complete, and they are designed to strengthen the community for the long term. Conservation helps bridge the gap during short-term challenges like the one Conway is facing now. In other words, protecting the water supply requires both major infrastructure investments and the everyday participation of the people who use the system.

A Temporary Challenge

That progress deserves recognition. Conway Corp appreciates the customers who have taken this request seriously and made changes at home, at work and in daily routines to reduce unnecessary water use. Those efforts matter, and they are helping.

That is why continued curtailment remains so important. The current situation is temporary, but temporary does not mean unimportant.

The choices customers make right now have a direct effect on how well Conway can preserve water resources while dry conditions persist.

Every sprinkler left off, every leak repaired and every unnecessary use postponed helps stretch supply further and reduces strain on the system.

But this is also the moment to keep going. Conservation is working precisely because people are participating, and the best way to build on that progress is for everyone to remain committed until meaningful rainfall returns. For many customers, the biggest opportunities are the simplest ones. Limiting lawn irrigation, postponing car washing,

We continue to monitor lake levels, rainfall and customer demand every day, and adjustments will be made as conditions improve. Until then, this remains a time for the community to stay focused and work together. The progress already made shows that conservation is not just a message — it is producing real results.

ay Rodgers was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame (ASHOF) in 2007 as part of the 49th class, along with Rod Smith, Sam Goodwin, Tom Pagnozzi, Ted Lloyd, Willie Roaf, Tina Webb Jackson, George Walker, Bobby Crockett, Jim Elder and Jermain Taylor.

Rodgers was born in 1936 in Oklahoma, but his family moved to Conway when he was a youth. He graduated from Conway High School in 1955, where he and his younger brother, David Rodgers, played football for the Wampus Cats. Back in those days, everyone in Conway had a nickname, and Ray was known as Big Butterball while David was known as Little Butterball.

Big Butterball attended Arkansas State Teachers College, now the University of Central Arkansas, graduating in 1960. He spent 24 years with the U.S. Army and Arkansas National Guard before retiring as a platoon sergeant in 1982. He also owned MidSouth Drywall in Little Rock. But boxing was always Rodgers’ greatest passion, first taking up the “sweet science” at the age of 11, weighing all of 75 pounds.

In 1956, he won the Arkansas AAU Open Lightweight Championship, and in 1960, the Open Welterweight title. He also captured the 1961 Mid-Ark Golden Gloves Welterweight crown.

Always known for his quick and savvy wit, he often quipped, “I had deceptive speed as a boxer — I was

slower than I looked,” adding that he “never finished worse than second in a match.”

As good as he was with the gloves on, he was even better with them off. A boxing coach for more than 60 years, Rodgers first began instructing what is now the Junior Golden Gloves at age 16. In 1969, he opened the Ray Rodgers Boxing Club in Conway and later moved it to Little Rock. In 1990, Muhammad Ali visited his gym.

He lived in Little Rock and operated the club until 2020 at the Junior Deputy Sports Complex, where he also ran an after-school education center. Over the years, he received numerous accolades for his work with underprivileged youth in Central Arkansas. He coached and mentored hundreds of kids. Over the years, he helped many a fighter improve his skills in the ring. Former middleweight world champion Jermain Taylor, who was inducted into the ASHOF the same year as Rodgers, was a product of his Golden Gloves program.

He conducted the Arkansas Golden Gloves Tournament for more than three decades. He also helped bring three national Golden Gloves tournaments to Little Rock. On the national boxing scene, Rodgers was also very successful and well-respected. His Arkansas teams always fared well in national tournaments, and he coached U.S. teams in various international competitions, including the 1992 Olympic trials.

A respected leader, Rodgers served as president of the National Silver Gloves Association and the National Golden Gloves Association. He was inducted into the National Silver Gloves Hall of Fame in 2001 and the National Golden Gloves Hall of Fame in 2002, becoming the first person inducted into both.

Rodgers also established a reputation as one of the best cut men in boxing. He worked more than 1,000 professional bouts all over the globe, including every one of Taylor’s fights. His work included 39 world title fights. In 2005, Rodgers was in Taylor’s corner the night in Las Vegas when he defeated Bernard Hopkins to win the undisputed middleweight championship of the world.

Rodgers never had a fighter disqualified due to a cut or injury. He joked that he “had stuff that would hold two drops of water together.”

During my quarter-century on the ASHOF board of directors, I have formed relationships with many of our inductees. Rodgers will forever be one of my favorites. He never met a stranger, but Ray became a friend, and I can honestly say I miss him and think of him often. Part of our connection was that we were both Wampus Cats, and we knew a lot of the same people in Conway.

He was posthumously inducted into the Wampus Cat Sports Hall of Fame in 2024, having passed away in 2022 at the age of 86.

“They never made that statement again,” Rodgers said. His confidence came from years of experience in boxing corners around the world. “I know what to do, I know how to do it, and I know when to do it.”

Lessons Learned ...

One Mile at a Time.

Story and Photos by Mike Kemp otorcycling has taught me many lessons I couldn’t learn in a classroom. It also reinforced lessons I learned in the classroom and on the playground in my formative years.

I was a decent student. I really liked science but was also pulled toward the arts, spending many hours doodling in my notebooks and getting lost in music after school. I think I’ve carried many of these things into my motorcycle riding.

For example, did you know that at speeds above about 12 mph, you turn a motorcycle left by pushing on the left handlebar? Go ahead, try it. I’ll wait.

It’s called countersteering. Pushing on the left handlebar slightly turns the wheel to the right, causing the motorcycle to fall into a lean in the opposite direction, which then arcs you around the curve. There’s a lot of science involved that I won’t try to explain, but you’ll have to trust me on this. If you don’t have a motorcycle,

try it on a bicycle. In fact, you’ve probably done it so much on a bicycle that you won’t even realize it’s happened.

There is a ton of science involved in riding. The mechanics of an internal combustion engine are full of it. The relationship between rubber and the road, and how it can change during braking, is a discussion that probably takes advanced degrees to fully expound upon. Just know it works.

But knowing how the motorcycle is acted upon by physical forces while turning is probably the best lesson to learn. If I’ve been off the motorcycle for a while, I feel like I have to relearn it. The motorcycle turns through leaning. Combining the countersteer we discussed earlier with managing your lean angle, you scythe your way through curves — hopefully with the skill and grace of a dancer piloting a fighter jet.

At least that’s how it feels to me.

When Mike recently returned to a stretch of Highway 113 in Perry County recently, he parked his motorcycle and took this photo to show a mangled guardrail in the background. He said,

‘The guardrail is a reminder not to look at what you fear, but at where you want to go.’

I’ve learned some lessons the hard way. Riding through a curve in Perry County, I thought I had the motorcycle leaned enough, yet somehow, I kept arcing toward a guardrail. A mild panic rode with me as I somehow made it through the curve. A mile or two of reflection made me realize I was looking at the hazard rather than my intended path.

The motorcycle goes where the eyes and nose are pointed. You need to look not just where you’re going, but where you want to go. To a certain extent, you learn to look past the hazard to the path you want to travel.

That level of focus has to be upheld through the entire ride, too.

Early on in my riding career, I was behind my uncle when I was distracted by a yellow flag along the roadside. It made me chuckle, thinking about a yellow flag flying on a racetrack, meaning a hazard is ahead, so slow down.

I chuckled until I ran off the pavement and onto the shoulder because the flag distracted me. For the rest of the ride, I was much more focused.

I don’t remember geography being a favorite subject in school, but since I’ve started riding, one of my favorite reading materials has been maps. I can trace roads on paper maps for hours, exploring routes I’ve yet to take. Searching with Google Maps’ Street View makes me curious to ride through unfamiliar towns to find a cup of coffee or a slice of pie.

In fact, I have a map of the state from 2003, held together with tape and filled with roads traced by highlighters. Whenever I ride a new road, that route is highlighted. I haven’t filled it up yet, but

I have revisited many of those routes and remembered times I’ve spent on them.

I’ve also learned Arkansas is blessed with wonderful roads and beautiful scenery, so maps of other states aren’t nearly as highlighted. Hopefully, my retirement years will provide some opportunities to explore those states more thoroughly.

There are lessons learned on the playground that apply to motorcycles, too. Most of them involve the value of making friends who share the same love of an interest as you do. While I do enjoy time to myself on a ride, bringing along friends to share in your misadventures is a great way to enjoy the sport.

Making friends on the playground is not much different than meeting people through the love of motorcycles. A good portion of my circle has been created through the motorcycle. There’s also nothing better than spending an afternoon exploring with a friend on your motorcycles, not unlike riding imaginary motorcycles on playground equipment at recess.

Yes, I’m the kid who did that.

But the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that, as a motorcyclist, I am a lifelong student. Motorcycling is a discipline, and every ride offers lessons. On many rides, I focus on one area I can improve. When I ride off-road, I try to improve techniques that keep me upright.

I’m always learning.

As in life, the ride is best enjoyed with a sense of curiosity, wonder and enjoyment. Being open to new experiences and new learning opportunities makes it all the more beautiful.

WHAT IT REALLY MEANS TO BE AT THE HEAD OF THE CLASS

Someone might be a class act, a class clown, or perhaps a person with class, meaning holding a certain polished appearance or behavior. Or perhaps that person fits into a certain category or class (classification) such as blue-collar, upperincome or somewhere in the middle.

little heads in the spring. He showed me how the sensitive plant closed its fronds when I touched them. I learned that the fuzzy orange things that attach themselves to oak leaves have a little worm inside! It is okay to eat dandelion salad, but not raw poke sallet. My beautiful foxglove plants hold derivatives that can treat heart attacks.

As an educator, I believe that much learning comes from all aspects of living and that everyone has his or her own “classroom.” I have great respect for those who learned at the foot of their grandmother’s rocker as she explained family ancestry.

Some were educated by following dad as he farmed, repaired or sold goods or services, or by handing ingredients to mother as she prepared to bake cornbread. ollowing the wrong lessons or influences can be death-dealing and usually requires reversing the situation by going cold turkey or having a “come-to-Jesus” moment. Taking large doses of the two is normally what does the trick.

Oh, and a saucer of beer kills slugs in the garden. I never knew where the beer could have been kept, as dad and the brothers knew that there were to be NO alcoholic drinks or cursing in our house. Only once did I hear a brother’s bad word yelled after a stubbed toe. My first 8-year-old innocent thought was concern over the pain it must have been; then I gleefully thought, “I’m gonna tell mother!” The little angel on my right shoulder gave me the side-eye, however, and I missed a good chance to protect my own younger status in times of accusation!

From my dad, I learned about plants very early. He sometimes allowed me to go on woodland treks with him as he studied grasses and soils related to his botanical profession. I noted that purslane flowers are nice, but don’t let them get near the garden.

Woodland violets are pretty, although invasive, and he let me bring some home to plant anyway. After many decades, they are still here, and I think of him every time they show their pretty

I’ve never known how I did it, but I knew how to read and print before first grade. That was not a sign of high intelligence, but of being introduced to imagination and curiosity that came from reading and being read to. These two blessings, freely given but not accepted by all, are often unused by current youths and young adults! My acquired interest in spelling and reading likely came from my mother, because as she read to me from babyhood, I watched as she used her forefinger to “underline” words as she said them. I noted repeated spellings and pronunciations.

Sometimes she tapped a couple of times on one that was to be emphasized. Imagine my surprise when “progressive” educators later told children to never underline words with a finger when reading. Both of my parents were teachers, so I assume they had secrets! They did not, however, work the same magic on my math skills.

Many books were in our house. Most were the classics, but we did go to the library on the courthouse square for new choices.

When I learned the building was originally a jailhouse, I was uncomfortable but soon found inside a glorious collection of books.

If topics were about horses or nurses, I wanted them. I was loving horses, Friesians in particular, and mailed many entries from the back of magazines to win one. I licked many first-class Statue of Liberty 5-cent stamps to do so. This introduced me to stamp collecting, and I began ordering from the Harris Stamp Co. using more stamps … which led me to learning about the Lady of Liberty. See what I mean?

Learning is enjoyable even when you don’t know that it’s happening!

LEADING THROUGH SERVICE ”Last fall, my Beta Club worked at Salem UMC to help support a food drop-off event. While there, we got a tour of the church grounds and the Sharing Fridge, and I had a really profound realization: ’We ask our students to serve; the state expects them to get 75 hours to graduate, but where am I in that conversation?’ It isn’t enough to tell people what they need to do — we lead through service; we build by growing.

I set a generous goal: I would donate meals once a month on my way to work. I achieved the goal but realized quickly that I had more capacity. That’s when I made a commitment that by December of 2026 I would cook 500 meals for the Sharing Fridge. So, periodically I would cook on the weekends and drop off supplies. I was fortunate to hit my goal by the end of May. I have since upped my goal to 1,000 meals by December of 2026 to continue pushing myself to grow.”

HOMETOWN: I was born and raised in Conway, which is where I live now. I absolutely love my community.

FAMILY: I married Collin Davies last fall, and we have four dogs who demand all our attention! Mortar is our shepherd mix, a rescue I got when I was 18. Last fall, we rescued Betty Lou, a sweet Boston terrier-pug mix. She literally bounces off the walls and keeps us on our toes! We also have two pugs, Izzy and Peanut. I have the best mom and dad on the planet — Perry and Treasa Cullum. They are the most supportive and loving family a guy could ask for. My dad is a brick mason (hence the name) and the hardest-working person I’ve ever known. I always tell people that I don’t have kids — except the many I’ve taught over the last decade whom I claim as my own.

EDUCATION: When I was a kid, I attended Vilonia Public Schools. I believe that some of the greatest educators in the great state of Arkansas have taught in Vilonia, and they prepared me incredibly well for college and adult life. I graduated in 2015 and attended the University of Central Arkansas. I finished my degree in social studies education, and later attended Arkansas State University and earned a master’s in educational theory and an educational specialist in curriculum and instruction. I am a proud product of public education in Arkansas.

AWARDS: I was selected as the CHS Teacher of the Year in 2022, and again in 2026. I am currently serving as the 2026-2027 Conway Public Schools District Teacher of the Year. I am one of 15 finalists being considered for the 2027 Arkansas Teacher of the Year and is scheduled to be recognized at the Governor’s Mansion on Aug. 6. The winner will be announced in October. In 2022, I was named the Arkansas History Teacher of the Year. Last spring, the University of Central Arkansas History Department selected me as their Outstanding Alum for 2025. Additionally, I had the privilege of serving as the Arkansas State Beta Sponsor from 2022 to 2025.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES: I try to be super involved in

the community, especially since I’m the CHS Beta Club sponsor. Beta is a community service, honors and leadership organization. I try to build my kids into leaders, and part of that is getting out there and working alongside them, which makes me a better person all the way around. I love showing up to serve and give back. One of my favorite activities that the students planned last year was the Great Gobble Giveback. They took time over Thanksgiving break to cook meals for the community. I worked alongside them and was able to help facilitate the delivery of more than 250 meals at a critical time of need. I give all the credit to our kids.

QUOTE THAT INSPIRES YOU? I’m really fond of one from Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” that I’ve embraced since ninth-grade English: “Pause you who read this, and think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day.” The idea is to 86 | A U G U S T 2 0 2 6

remember that no matter what good or bad things happen to us in our lives, we can trace everything back to moments we experience, decisions we make, perspectives we embrace. It reminds me to overcome the bad and keep going — always.

I also lean into a favorite quote from Lady Gaga: “It’s always wrong to hate, but it’s never wrong to love.” We just need to be kind to one another and embrace acceptance for our fellow humans. That’s what I’m all about.

WHO INSPIRED YOU? I have wanted to be a teacher for so long.

Growing up, I always felt like teachers were the coolest people. Now that I am one, I know that’s definitely true. When I was in middle school and junior high, I experienced a great deal of bullying. It was so bad that I didn’t even want to go to school some days. I had a few amazing teachers who profoundly impacted my life and saved me. Candace Churchwell was one of the first people to really stand up for me and make a difference. Cara Cromwell inspired me to love social studies and showed me what a great teacher can do to inspire a love of learning. Tracy Rappold pushed me to achieve and see myself as someone capable of growth and value. Special shoutout to Mrs. Macal and Mrs. Knapp, who were some of the fiercest advocates for me, and I adore them to this day.

CHALLENGES TEACHERS FACE TODAY? I need people to understand that there are some really amazing things happening in our public schools. CHS has had stellar growth in our test scores, students are winning scholarships like never before, clubs are dominating national competitions and bringing home some serious recognition. We advocate for all our students, help kids find jobs right out of high school and build accessible routes to higher education for all.

Those stories should be elevated, and the amazing kids and teachers who are putting in the work should be celebrated. I think it challenges teachers sometimes when all we see is the negative. We put in so much hard work, and the return on investment for us comes when we get to see our kids thrive.

Let’s all empower that a little more and speak with kindness.

WHAT IS YOUR FUN IN THE 501?

My husband and I love to watch movies at home with the dogs, and I’m a big fan of working in the yard.

I am always up for a visit to the Plant Outlet! If I’m feeling really adventurous, my favorite activity ever is to ride roller coasters. Whether that’s right here in Arkansas or around the world, I’m always down for an adrenaline rush. We also enjoy grabbing dinner at a local restaurant to unwind once in a while.

Some of our favorites are El Fuego — which is a must-try in downtown — and Roost & Tap.
