The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) has released a new eLearning MEWP Spotter Training Course, designed for anyone who assists a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) operator in safely manoeuvring a machine into position.
The new MEWP Spotter Training Course is concise, theoryonly, and delivered entirely online. This is for convenience and enables candidates to learn in their own time, at their own pace, on their own devices.
Interactive graphics and videos clearly guide candidates through their learning journey and show various worksite environments and real-life scenarios.
The course takes approximately two-and-ahalf hours to complete, and upon passing the online theory test, candidates are

awarded their qualification, which is valid for five years.
A MEWP spotter is a specific role assigned to one or more people to observe MEWP operations on-site, in real-time, and, where necessary, communicate with the MEWP Operator to direct them to manoeuvre the MEWP safely away from any obstacles
or hazards that may be beyond the MEWP operator’s line of sight.
The requirement for MEWP spotter training was first identified by powered access contractors.
Routinely, and as part of their risk assessments, many contractors assign the dedicated role of MEWP spotter on their worksites
because it has proven to reduce accidents and incidents.
Paul Roddis, IPAF Training Manager, said: “This new MEWP Spotter Course demonstrates what is possible when IPAF works in partnership with its contractor members to develop practical solutions for the industry.
“Together, we have created something exceptional that I firmly believe will save lives.
“If you’re involved in helping a MEWP Operator to safely manoeuvre a MEWP into position, this is the course for you. Likewise, we recommend the course is also taken by operators, supervisors and site managers, to ensure everyone on site understands the spotter’s role, hand signals and where the spotter should be safely positioned.”
The MEWP Spotter Training Course is available to book now through all English-speaking IPAF Approved Training Centres (except North America). Bookings can be made directly via an IPAF Approved Training Centre by visiting www.ipaf. org/en/training-centres.
National plant hirer, Buckhurst Plant Hire, have recently added more than 110 new Takeuchi machines to its ever-growing rental fleet.
With depots from Rossendale, Leeds and Northants to West Lothian and Aberdeen in Scotland, Buckhurst are one of the largest independent national plant hirers. An expanded fleet meets increased demand as Buckhurst are experiencing nationwide demand in sectors including renewable energy, overhead power and utilities; predominantly the water industry’s AMP8 cycle which includes several key projects across the UK.
With this latest investment, the Buckhurst fleet now exceeds 1,200 excavators, mostly Takeuchi models. The expansion reinforces their focus on delivering exactly what their customers across every sector demand and where the Takeuchi machines are consistently highly-regarded.
The new Takeuchi additions include 100 excavators weighing in from 1 to 15-tonne, including 10xTB210R, 20xTB325R, 15xTB230, 30xTB260, 20xTB290-2 and 15xTB2150R models. In addition, 10 of the very latest TCR50-3 tracked dumpers will be ready for lifting platform conversions and cranes.
The new machines will have additional Andy’s Man Club (AMC) branding to full effect. Buckhurst have championed AMC for many years and fully supports their campaign focussing on key issues for men’s mental health and getting men talking.

John Walsh, Chairman of Buckhurst Plant Hire, commented: “Our machines are seen on roads and sites across the UK, and it just might be a prompt to help someone make a change. In the male-dominated construction and plant hire sector this campaign is needed more than ever, and we are happy to promote AMC across our fleet.”
Takeuchi have always been a favourite excavator for the self-drive plant hire sector offered by Buckhurst. Customers and operators like the uncomplicated
simplicity of a Takeuchi and plant hirers enjoy the unrivalled reliability Takeuchi machines are best known for.
From the very early days Buckhurst Plant Hire were one of the first hire firms to get on-board with Takeuchi. It’s a brand they know and trust, and reliability has been the keyword throughout Takeuchi’s 30-year history.
John Walsh added: “Throughout 2026 we are going to be investing in our fleet, and these Takeuchi machines are a significant part of that.
“Our customers continually praise the Takeuchi excavators for their reliability and usability so adding more to our fleet was an easy decision to make. The TCR50-3 tracked dumpers also offer great functionality for our customers and we’re sure they will be a very popular hire at sites from our depots across the UK.”
Jason Periam, Head of Sales, Takeuchi UK, commented: “Buckhurst Plant Hire are one the UK’s leaders in specialist plant. Very often working on remote and challenging projects, this is where Takeuchi’s reputation for quality and reliability makes all the difference.
“This landmark deal reaffirms the strength of the Takeuchi – Buckhurst relationship. Takeuchi are pleased to once again supply Buckhurst with an extensive line-up of machines for one of the UK’s leading plant hire firms.”

BY SARAH NELSON
Having learned of the magnitude of Hyundai’s innovation time and time again in my role as editor of Plant & Civil Engineer, the opportunity to witness the brand’s boundless aspirations and impact first-hand was one I was delighted to seize. It was therefore with immense gratitude that I accepted the invitation to witness the unveiling of a host of new machines in Hyundai’s European head office in April, as part of a special trade media invitation.
As I kicked off my journey on the Tuesday morning, the seamless transport cultivated by the Hyundai team incorporated a connecting flight to London Heathrow, before disembarking in Düsseldorf Airport where a car company met me for the duration of my journey to my overnight accommodation in the luxurious Holiday Inn in Hasselt. After settling in to the comfortable setting and being granted the chance to engage with the rest of the esteemed guests, transport journeyed us to the Hyundai offices in Tessenderlo, Belgium. Building on the successful launch of its Next Generation crawler excavator range in 2025, Hyundai continues to enter new market sectors in 2026, in response to customer demand –and it was within the company’s remarkable surroundings that we were granted the chance to gauge more about the plans ahead. We were welcomed by European CEO Sanho Shin and Sales Director Maurizio

Chiarotti for exclusive presentations and an unveiling of a wide range of machines at the firm’s visitor centre. Further bolstering our knowledge, we had continued access to Hyundai product specialists and sales management representatives who helpfully provided insight into the rapidly growing equipment line. The evening culminated with

delicious dining and captivating entertainment – including an incredible machinery-centric musical performance that I will never forget.
The next morning, we were in the driver’s seat. After breakfast, we were taken to Maastricht for a demonstration and a

hands-on session to experience the newest Hyundai machines up close and personal, followed by lunch served on site.
The event provided the first chance to try the new HX230 Next Generation crawler excavator, that was launched recently at the ConExpo exhibition in Las Vegas. Powered by Hyundai’s own award-winning, twin-turbo DX05 diesel engine, the HX230 features Hyundai’s full electrohydraulic (FEH) controls, that allow operators to fine tune lever control and response to their individual preference.
The 23-tonne machine delivers fuel savings of up to 7% compared to the previous model, with a 30% cut in AdBlue consumption.
Service intervals have also been doubled, to 1,000 hours, reducing operating costs and downtime for customers.
The HX230 is joined by the larger HX260 and HX260N, HX260L and HX260NL models, with operating weights of around 26-tonnes. These machines also benefit from the use of the DX05 engine and the FEH control system. The Next Generation excavators feature Hyundai’s Smart Around View Monitor (SAVM) system, an upgrade on the previous generation AAVM technology. SAVM features six cameras mounted on the upper structure of the machine, with AI-based human detection and the option of Radar Object Detection, to alert the operator to nearby hazards. Already seen in Europe, the HX300 joined the Next Generation line-up earlier this year and the 30-tonne crawler excavator uses the DX08 six-cylinder engine and Hyundai’s FEH controls. Fuel savings
can be as high as 9% when compared to the previous 30-tonne model. At the opposite end of the weight scale, the new HX10A Z is the latest model to join Hyundai’s A-Series compact excavator range. Powered by a 7.6kW diesel engine, the 1.1-tonne machine has a retractable undercarriage to allow access to the most confined working areas. The high specification mini delivers all of the benefits of the A-Series range, including outstanding operator comfort and control, robust design and build, along with the power and lifting capacity to perform.
Other compact machines available for test included the HS80V and HS120V skid steer loaders and the HT100V compact tracked loader. Proven in the North American market, this is the first time that Hyundai has offered skid steers and CTLs in Europe. All three are powered by Stage V Hyundai diesel engines and they tip the scales at 3.2-tonnes, 3.7-tonnes and 4.4-tonnes respectively. With vertical lift path geometry, the machines feature industry-standard attachment couplers. While all of Hyundai’s articulated dump trucks (ADT) feature a recently upgraded cabin, with increased space and lower noise levels, the company has added a two-axle model to the line-up. The HA45A 4x4 delivers the speed and fuel efficiency of a rigid haul truck, with the bad weather and climbing capabilities of an ADT. The truck features self-levelling hydro-gas suspension and is equipped with

front and rear limited slip differentials to provide maximum traction when required.
Also on static display at the event was an HX520A crawler excavator in HRD demolition specification. Built in co-operation with demolition specialist STC, the 52-tonne machine can be equipped with digging boom, a straight demolition boom or a high-reach rig, delivering a pin height of up to 27m. Equipped with a hydraulically-adjustable undercarriage, a tilting operator’s cab and a dust suppression system, the HX520A HRD enters one of the most popular highreach sectors of the market. The machine demonstrates Hyundai’s commitment to provide dedicated machinery for customers across all sectors of the construction business.
With that, the Hyundai visit came to a close and I was transported to Brussels Airport for my return journey home, reflecting on the incredible experience at Hyundai’s European HQ, gaining unprecedented access to the next generation of Hyundai construction machinery. It was inspiring to witness the innovation shaping the future of our industry and to connect with Hyundai’s experts and leadership. Thank you to the team for the immersive opportunity and exceptional hospitality.

Few names in UK construction reflect long‑term vision, family commitment and industry leadership quite like J&D Pierce (Contracts) Ltd. Founded in 1975 and now recognised among the UK’s foremost structural steelwork contractors, the business has grown from a one‑man workshop into a nationally significant steel specialist delivering complex industrial, infrastructure and stadium projects across the country.
Today, with over 550 employees across multiple divisions, J&D Pierce is one of the largest employers in North Ayrshire, operating more than 1,000,000 sq ft of production and fabrication facilities across Scotland and the North of England. But behind its scale lies a very human story; one built on three generations of hard work, resilience and belief. We sat down with Jamie Pierce, Joint Managing Director to find out more.
1975
The business was established by James Pierce, Jamie’s grandfather, as a one‑man operation producing gates, railings, fire escapes and general ironmongery. With little capital but significant determination, he laid the foundation for the company’s craft and reputation.
James was joined by his son Derek Pierce, whose ambition and appetite for calculated risk transformed the company. Derek consistently stayed ahead of the curve with where the market was heading, larger buildings, faster installation methods, more complex steel structures, building the business into one of the UK’s leading structural steelwork contractors.
This mindset of anticipating industry change became the engine of growth throughout the 1980s and 1990s, as the company scaled its capability, workforce and project portfolio.
2000s – National Expansion
Through the 2000s, J&D Pierce expanded into major commercial, industrial and retail projects across the UK, supported by constant investment in production capacity and growing in‑house expertise.
2004 – Apprenticeships Programme Established
A formal apprenticeship programme was introduced, creating a sustainable talent pipeline that today supports 65+ apprentices at any one time and has shaped much of the current workforce.
2010
Jamie Pierce joined the business, gaining experience across fabrication construction, engineering, operations and site delivery.

2011
The business introduced Merlo heavy‑lift telehandlers into its steel handling operations improving offloading safety and efficiency.
2013 – Founder Retirement
After nearly four decades, James Pierce retired, with Derek continuing to lead the next major stages of growth.
2015 – Third Generation Strengthens
Jamie’s brother Fraser joined as an apprentice, progressing through fabrication and into construction and pre‑construction roles.
2018 – 2024 – Major Investment & National Infrastructure
• 2018 – Major Investment and Design & Build Division (Scarborough) Significant investment in automated fabrication facilities alongside the

establishment of the Design & Build division in Scarborough, supporting large scale industrial and distribution projects.
• 2021 – East Kilbride Facility & Strubeam Expansion
Expansion of heavy and bespoke steel capability through the East Kilbride facility and growth of the Strubeam division
• 2022 – Bridge Division Established (Durham)
Opening of a Durham office to support the bridge and construction division, strengthening infrastructure capability.
• 2024 – Clydesdale Coatings (Bellshill)
Major investment in a new state of the art coatings facility, improving quality control and programme delivery, with dedicated handling operations supported by Merlo machines.
The business grew to over 550 employees across the UK, delivering steelwork for major industrial, logistics, energy and stadium developments
2026 – Leadership Transition
Derek transitions to Chairman, with Jamie Pierce becoming Joint Managing Director alongside Dave Ryan, marking the formal progression into the third generation.
A defining characteristic of J&D Pierce is its commitment to people. More than half a century after its founding, the business continues to invest heavily in skills training and development across all areas of the business including

fabrication, welding, erection, design, drawing, coatings and support functions.
This is led by a dedicated skills development team, headed by Alex,(Jamie’s uncle) who came into the business as an apprentice and has since progressed to play a key role in developing the next generation of our workforce.

In addition to the well‑established apprenticeship programme, J&D Pierce operates a second‑chance training route, for people from a wide range of backgrounds – often from outside the construction industry – who are looking to retrain and build a career in steel.
The company also partners with North Ayrshire Council on a 16‑week welding programme that provides unemployed individuals with industry‑ready skills.
“As one of the largest employers in North Ayrshire, we have a responsibility to create long term opportunities,”
Jamie says. “People are at the heart of everything we do – and always will be.”
Jamie notes that while Merlo build excellent machines, it is the support from Ramsey & Jackson that truly sets them apart.
J&D Pierce’s continued investment in its operational capability includes a growing fleet of Merlo machines that support safe and efficient steel handling across both yard and site environments. Over the past 12 months, the business has added five new Merlo units to its fleet:
• Three P120.10HM heavy‑lift telehandlers
• One 26‑metre ROTO (50.26PLUS)
• One 30‑metre ROTO (50.30PLUS)
These machines play an important supporting role on major projects, including the HVDC converter stations in Orkney and Peterhead, where their reach, stability and manoeuvrability make them particularly effective in areas where cranes are restricted or less efficient.

Jamie is clear that while Merlo produces excellent equipment, it is the partnership with Ramsey & Jackson that truly makes the difference. The service and responsiveness from Neil Ramsay, Colin McVey and the wider
team, at any time, on any site, is a major factor in why J&D Pierce continues to invest in Merlo as part of its long term strategy. This support is why J&D Pierce continues to invest in Merlo equipment: not just for performance, but for the assurance of reliable service.
J&D Pierce and Merlo share a remarkably similar heritage. Both have been shaped by family beginnings, a focus on engineering excellence and a steady evolution from general ironmongery workshops into internationally respected specialists. Both take pride in continuous improvement, investment in people, safe working practices and a commitment to quality that spans generations.
As J&D Pierce continues to deliver the UK’s largest distribution centres, HVDC infrastructure, Premiership stadiums and major industrial projects, Merlo will continue to support the business behind the scenes, enabling safe steel handling, efficient offloading and precision placement.
“We don’t buy machines as ornaments,” Jamie says. “We use them every day, to their full capability. Merlo fits how we work –reliable, efficient and built for the long haul.”

Fit for purpose quality / In stock for immediate despatch / On-time delivery anywhere in Ireland.
In today’s fast paced world there’s never been a greater emphasis on ‘service’. But what is service? Or more specifically, what does ‘service’ mean to a busy commercial workshop where the impossible appears to have become the normal.
SWS have been practising, and refining, this for 50 years and more. They understand that downtime for a truck equals loss of earnings for your customer. They fully appreciate that being told that what you need is still over the water in the UK is not what you want to hear.

They know that your time is at a premium, and placing an order, whether online or by phone, needs to be totally stress free; as easy as ABC.
At SWS, this is not just words on a page. It’s a fact, the result of a lot of hard yards. Products have to be ‘fit for purpose’ to be included in the range. Stocks
must be maintained at healthy levels to ensure your needs can be met. The ordering process needs to run smoothly. Deliveries have to be on time; every time. There’s a lot happening at SWS this year. During March, a comprehensive catalogue for the complete consumables range will be launched. This will be followed later in the year with a similar one for equipment. With a 72m² stand taken at RTX NI there will be plenty to engage the visitors’ interest. And we’re only at the start of the year. But, and this is the essential but, none of this must be allowed to detract from what we started with - service. Of all the essentials - it’s the most important.

Develon has introduced the new DD100 dozer, a machine positioned at the top of its class for operating weight and horsepower. Designed for residential, light commercial and road construction, the DD100 is ideal for fine grading applications. Its standout feature is a strong power-to-weight ratio, delivering greater power to the ground and improved tractive effort compared with other machines in the under-140 HP category.
Productivity is driven by a six-way variable angle pitch blade that allows operators to lift, tilt and angle the blade for precise grading. Customers can choose between a standard 2.22 m3 blade or an optional 2.58 m3 capacity blade. Two-way mechanical blade pitch adjustment provides better control over digging angle, while a blade shake feature helps quickly clear material build-up.

The DD100 incorporates advanced technology to improve grading accuracy. A 2D grading system option simplifies precision grading, even for less experienced operators. For higher accuracy, a 3D machine guidance and control option developed in partnership with Trimble/Leica/Topcon uses GPS technology and an additional in-cab monitor to deliver enhanced grading performance. Electrohydraulic controls come standard, allowing operators to customise the machine’s responsiveness to match their preferences and experience level.
The DD100 offers the best visibility in the market for this class of machine, thanks to its narrow front engine compartment design that improves the operator’s view of the blade and work area. Key visibility enhancements include a hidden engine precleaner, a rear-mounted electronic cooling system, low-profile front cab pillars and allglass doors for a clear view of the jobsite. A standard rearview camera also improves situational awareness and jobsite safety.

Operator comfort was a key design focus. The DD100 includes an air-suspension seat and cab suspension system for a smoother ride, along with a powerful heating and cooling system to maintain comfort in all seasons. Defrost vents for the front and door glass improve visibility, while high-illumination LED lighting supports work in low-light conditions.
Powered by a 3.4-litre D34 diesel engine, the DD100 meets stage V emissions standards. An ECO mode can reduce fuel consumption by up to 5% in lighter operating conditions by lowering pump power output. Additional features such as auto idle and
• Horsepower (gross): 122 HP (91 kW)
• Operating weight LGP and Ripper: 11.6 tonne
• Blade capacity: 2.2 – 2.6 m3
• Blade height: 1085 mm
• Blade width: 2770 mm – 3280 mm
• Blade angle: 23 degrees
• Drawbar pull: 16 ton-force
• Travel speed, max: 9 km/h
• Dozer cabin is ROPS/ FOPS certified
auto engine shutdown further reduce fuel use during periods of inactivity.
The DD100 comes standard with piping for an optional ripper attachment with parallel linkage that maintains a consistent angle to the ground. This allows operators to break up hard materials before grading or assist with erosion control work. An optional towing draw bar also enables the dozer to move equipment around the jobsite. The machine’s undercarriage system is engineered to improve durability and reduce the total cost of operation. A combination of single- and dual-flange rollers enhances component life, while
customers can select general-purpose or full track guards depending on jobsite conditions to maximise uptime.
The DD100 is designed for easy maintenance and long service life. A compact in-line precleaner integrated with the air cleaner helps extend filter life by expelling debris such as mud, snow and dust. Key undercarriage service points are easily accessible, including a removable side panel for tension system greasing. A high-performance fuel water separator and dual fuel filters help improve fuel purity and reduce system failures, while a rear-mounted cooling system with a reversible fan supports reliability and improved visibility.

At the start of March, I was privileged to be part of a Northern Ireland Business Group delegation to visit Brussels to engage with UK and EU teams working together on the Windsor Framework and the “reset” of the UK / EU relationship marking a shift toward practical engagement on post-Brexit trade arrangements. For our construction materials sector, the key issue has always been and will continue to be the need to reduce trade friction and regulatory complexity. This is essential to maintaining competitiveness and unlocking growth for Northern Ireland.
It was abundantly clear to me and my colleagues that the UK / EU relationship was much warmer and certainly closer than the last time I was there in 2023, hence the optimism of reaching agreement and alignment on major issues like SPS and CBAM. The visit reinforced both the opportunity of dual market access (UK + EU) and the recognition that divergence creates a lose / lose situation and increase in administrative burden for businesses.
Northern Ireland’s unique position provides both access to the UK internal market and continued access to the EU single market for goods. For construction materials
businesses this creates a significant potential competitive advantage, but only if trade flows efficiently and predictably.
During our discussions I took the opportunity to highlight the impact of trade friction across the Irish Sea on material supply chains.
I stressed the point as an NI to GB and NI to RoI supply industry the triple impact of documentation requirements, customs processes and delays and administrative costs create:
• Increased cost base for NI producers
• Reduced flexibility in supply chains
• Risk to competitiveness vs GB / EU competitors
Potential divergence between UK product standards and EU construction product regulations creates dual compliance requirements, product certification complexity and increased cost for manufacturers. In effect, increased risk of Northern Ireland businesses being caught between two regulatory systems.
A main area of concern is of course CBAM and the need for alignment between the EU and UK schemes.
If you are a manufacturer in Northern Ireland exporting to EU customers, you do not normally have a direct legal obligation under EU CBAM. However, your EU customer (the importer) must report emissions and

possibly pay CBAM certificates, so they will require specific data from you to comply.
In practice, EU customers will expect suppliers to provide structured carbon-emissions data for the goods they import. If you can’t provide it, they may have to use EU default emissions values, which usually increases their carbon cost and makes your product less competitive.
The current CBAM regulation directly covers imports of:
• Cement
• Iron and steel
• Aluminium
• Fertilisers
• Electricity
• Hydrogen
So the key point is whether your concrete product is classified as cement or steel, or as a downstream manufactured product. Because CBAM currently applies mainly to basic materials, the embedded cement emissions are not yet captured when imported as a finished concrete product.
MPANI recently produced a short simple guide for members on the introduction of CBAM and what manufacturers’ duties will be. This can be viewed and downloaded at https://mcusercontent. com/0e749f02c5a58b746bd03b5a8/files/ e3964b72-8c2a-2f3e-c6f9-0ab77bb52d6c/ CBAM_Guide_for_NI_Suppliers.pdf.

The Brussels visit signalled a move toward practical economic engagement between Northern Ireland, the UK, and the EU. However, for the construction materials sector, success will depend on reducing friction, aligning regulation, and providing long-term certainty. Without this, costs will rise, competitiveness will fall and investment will be constrained.
So, what are the current business conditions in Northern Ireland? The first quarter of 2026 highlights a clear message that the Northern Ireland construction sector is recovering, but its ability to deliver economic growth is being constrained by public funding pressures and critical infrastructure bottlenecks. Despite a strong project pipeline and improving output, delivery is being held back by the same issues:
• Public expenditure constraints
• Wastewater capacity limitations
• Skills shortages and rising labour costs Northern Ireland has the construction capacity, pipeline, and expertise to support economic growth. However, without decisive action on infrastructure investment, wastewater capacity, and funding certainty, this potential will not be realised.
MPANI has been surveying members about their views on the Economy Minister’s Good Jobs Bill that she intends to bring to the Executive and then to the Assembly in the coming weeks.
MPANI has already been engaging with other business organisations and have spoken to a number of MLAs about our collective concern about the Minister’s proposals. The Bill is structured around four main policy themes intended to modernise employment law, strengthen worker protections, and support the Executive’s broader Good Jobs economic vision – defined as secure, fairlypaid roles that support wellbeing, productivity and participation in the labour market:
• Terms of employment
• Pay and benefits
• Voice and representation
• Work-life balance
These form the backbone of the Bill’s proposals! The overwhelming consensus is one of support for the aim of increasing good jobs and productivity in Northern Ireland, and many proposals in the Bill are already part of most MPANI members’ business practices. However, the financial and operational impact will be felt most acutely by small and medium-sized businesses. We welcome

greater co-operation with trade unions, but the proposed increase in union powers is very concerning. Union representatives often overlook the viability challenges faced by smaller businesses and tend to adopt an adversarial approach.
Granting more power to unions risks placing further strain on SMEs, potentially undermining their sustainability. Without appropriate safeguards and flexibility, the Good Jobs Bill risks placing disproportionate pressure on smaller employers. This could ultimately reduce job creation, discourage investment, and harm the competitiveness of the Northern Ireland economy.
MPANI would strongly recommend that all businesses contact their local political representatives to highlight your concerns about the impact of this new legislation, if passed, and urge significant changes in order to protect the sustainability of businesses and jobs.
Following letters from MPA and MNI to the Economy Minister, Dr Caoimhe Archibald, I was part of a business delegation that met with her recently to discuss the high cost of electricity for energy-intensive businesses in Northern Ireland.
In 2025 the UK government announced two schemes to support energy-intensive industries and businesses in its industrial strategy growth sectors, the British Supercharger and British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme. Neither of these interventions will apply in Northern Ireland. The Supercharger scheme will see a small but very important number of local firms at a competitive disadvantage. However, the BICS will support c7000 GB manufacturers giving them a significant
competitive advantage over many of our local firms. It was made clear to the Minister that the option of doing nothing was not an option. There is a serious risk of inward investors and larger businesses de-investing in Northern Ireland or many businesses coming off the electricity grid and decarbonising resulting in fixed pass through charges being shared by all remaining electricity grid users resulting in higher bills.
‘Reshaping Our Future and Driving Sustainable Change’ is the title for our 2026/2027 Journal which we plan to publish in June. BY EMMA BLAIR, REGIONAL SALES DIRECTOR AT CLOSE BROTHERS COMMERCIAL FINANCE
In the construction and civils sector, the work rarely waits for the cash. Costs hit early, but payments often come later. Mobilisation and day-to-day expenses need covering upfront, while valuations, retentions and payment cycles can take time to catch up. That gap is where projects become working-capital intensive, particularly when prices are high. The challenge is rarely a lack of ambition, it is keeping finance aligned to what the job demands, so operational decisions are not dictated by timing.
Close Brothers’ latest research, surveying 900 SMEs across the UK and Ireland, highlights how consistently cost pressures are shaping decisions. Energy costs (42%) and inflation (42%) remain among the leading concerns, alongside interest rates (34%). More than half (57%) say rising costs have impacted profitability. Attitudes to borrowing are shifting too. Over half of SMEs see taking external finance to protect cash flow as a good business strategy, and 34% say they missed an opportunity in the past 12 months due to a lack of available facilities. At Close Brothers Commercial Finance, we are seeing flexible facilities becoming part of day-today operational decision-making, used to protect capacity and keep delivery moving.
For many plant-heavy SMEs, a lot of money can be tied up in machinery, vehicles and specialist kit. It is essential for delivery, but that value is not always easy to turn into day-to-day flexibility. This is where refinancing can be a practical option. It lets a firm release cash from owned assets while keeping them in use, creating extra headroom for day-to-day working capital, resilience or investment. Because the facility is secured against the machinery itself, refinancing can provide an alternative route to traditional borrowing, by linking the facility to tangible kit.
One structure commonly used by firms is sale and hire purchase back. A company sells an owned item, such as plant, machinery or vehicles, and then immediately hires it back. The firm receives upfront funds, continues to use the equipment as normal, and repays the facility over an agreed period. At the end of the term, ownership can typically be regained, subject to the agreement terms.
In practical terms, it can help a firm protect working capital without interrupting operations. That matters when costs rise unexpectedly, project pipelines fluctuate, or opportunities appear with short lead times, because it reduces the risk of having to slow down delivery or pass on work simply due to timing.
Recent years have shown that shocks rarely arrive one at a time. Input costs can move quickly, supply chains can tighten, and payment cycles can stretch, all of which puts pressure on working capital just when companies need to stay responsive.
That is where sale and hire purchase back can come into its own. By converting the value of owned plant into usable funds, while keeping essential kit in operation, it creates breathing space without forcing a business to park equipment, postpone investment, or compromise on delivery. It can also reduce the likelihood of being pushed into reactive decisions at the most pressured moment, whether that is delaying a purchase, stretching supplier terms further than is comfortable, or passing up work because the timing does not stack up.
Sale and hire purchase back is a practical solution in the right circumstances, but it is not the answer to every requirement we see in the sector. If a firm is looking to invest in new or replacement kit, hire purchase or a finance lease can support that growth in a controlled way, spreading the cost and keeping headroom for operations.
Equally, not every cash flow challenge needs to be solved through equipment. Invoice finance can be a flexible alternative, releasing funds against unpaid invoices so working capital is not left sitting in the debtor book while payment terms run their course.
Uncertainty should not remove opportunity, but it changes the margin for error. The businesses that stay resilient are often those that build flexibility early, so they are not forced into decisions at the most

pressured moment. With more SMEs viewing external finance as a strategic tool to protect cash flow, the focus is increasingly on creating headroom, whether that is through unlocking value tied up in existing assets or structuring facilities to match how the business operates.

At its core, Creagh’s success is built on a clear philosophy: combine engineering excellence with offsite innovation to deliver faster, safer, and more sustainable construction. Over decades, this approach has expanded its portfolio from simple blocks and ready-mix concrete into a comprehensive suite of products and services that support residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects alike. 2026 will see new products lines being added with L walls and prestressed wall panels being manufactured at its Toomebridge HQ.
One of the standout innovations in Creagh’s offering is Spantherm®, its insulated precast concrete flooring system. Designed specifically for ground floor applications, Spantherm represents a significant leap forward in efficiency and performance. Manufactured off-site in controlled factory environments, the system integrates structural concrete with expanded polystyrene insulation, ensuring consistent quality and exceptional thermal performance.

The benefits are compelling. With U-values as low as 0.08 W/m²K, Spantherm supports modern energy efficiency standards while dramatically reducing installation time, typical floors can be installed in under an hour. This speed is not just a convenience; it fundamentally transforms project timelines, allowing contractors

to accelerate programmes and reduce labour demands. Preformed service openings, zero on-site waste, and reduced manual handling further enhance efficiency and safety, making Spantherm a benchmark for modern methods of construction. With the Future Homes Standard coming into effect in England it will undoubtedly have an impact on the Part F & Part L regulations in NI with further major uplift
expected around 2026–27 to align with FHS-type goals. Spantherm® is just one part of a much broader ecosystem. Creagh’s Rapidres® system exemplifies its leadership in offsite structural solutions. Designed for multi-storey residential developments such as apartments and student accommodation, Rapidres delivers a fully precast structural frame including: walls, floors, and cores, enabling rapid construction and early weather tightness. This capability has been proven at scale, most notably in landmark projects like The Rise in Cardiff, where Creagh’s systems helped deliver a 31-storey tower in just 36 weeks. Such achievements underline the company’s ability to combine speed with precision. Through the integration of technologies, including AI-driven quality control, 3D scanning, and real-time defect detection, Creagh ensures that every component meets exacting standards before it reaches site. This digital transformation is not only improving accuracy but also reducing waste and

enhancing sustainability across the construction lifecycle.
Complementing its precast systems is Creagh’s extensive ready-mix concrete division, which plays a vital role in supporting both standalone projects and integrated construction packages. With multiple production facilities across Northern Ireland, the company supplies a wide range of mixes, from standard and high-durability concrete to specialist solutions such as fibrereinforced and self-compacting concrete. In that sense, Creagh is more than a manufacturer. It is a catalyst for change, redefining what is possible in construction and setting new standards for the industry to follow.

Past President Karen McShane

The implications of recent legal decisions have an impact upon all of us working within the transport sector in Northern Ireland and this was the topic of debate at the CIHT Northern Ireland / Carson McDowell breakfast seminar in April 2026.
The Seminar debated the legal hot topics in highways and transport infrastructure and included an-in depth session designed to provide practical insight into the legal landscape shaping the delivery of transport and infrastructure projects, and the related quarrying sector, across the UK and with reference to Northern Ireland.
Of note is the decision on the A5 which emphasises the need for careful planning and co-ordination between departments to ensure compliance with climate change legislation and the reference to the Climate Change Act. This will lead to increased scrutiny of infrastructure projects and will most likely lead to more rigorous environmental assessments.
The ruling could set a precedent for future legal challenges to infrastructure projects, potentially leading to more complex and costly legal battles for developers and the government. It is therefore beholding on all transport professionals to ensure that we take account of climate change in our proposals.
The inevitable delay on the A5 ruling jeopardises the funding that had originally been secured for this and other infrastructure projects. Government may now be required to demonstrate compliance with climate change legislation before moving forward with projects. There is no doubt that the court ruling will lead to changes in how infrastructure projects are delivered, with a focus on ensuring that they align with statutory climate change targets and budgets. With over 50 deaths along the A5 since 2006 the ruling still delays a much-needed project required to solve existing issues

and to deliver a guaranteed journey time for our public transport services to ensure a reliable schedule can be adhered to.
The Climate Change Act does now have significant implications for the industry, potentially leading to more cautious project development and a greater emphasis on environmental considerations.
The Climate Change Act also has implications on the emissions arising from the current Strait of Hormuz blockages further exacerbate the costs and emissions incurred in delivering road and active travel materials to Northern Ireland. The disruptions are
straining supply chains, driving up costs, and reshaping global trade patterns. The blockage has led to increased shipping times and costs, which directly impact the delivery of materials in Northern Ireland.
The rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope has surged by 89%, but it adds significantly to costs, delays, and carbon emissions. For example, according to the Atlantic Council a typical large container ship on the Far EastEurope route incurs an additional $400,000 in costs per voyage under the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) when diverting around Africa instead of using the Suez Canal. This leads to higher fuel consumption, crew wages, and insurance

premiums, all while raising overall costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Is it time to see more funding invested in sustainable ship travel such as the Belfast based Artemis project to bring this to a much larger scale?
The Climate Change Act is a necessary legislation to ensure we slow down green house gas emissions. As the road
gets more rocky it is beholding on us all to try and optimise the route through delivering more efficient sustainable projects to achieve this goal.
As the CIHT academic year comes to an end we complete our remaining events, including the CIHT Annual Dinner and Awards held at

the Transport Museum at Cultra. A report is elsewhere in this edition and I pass on my congratulations to all the winners. We also have our forthcoming study tour this year looking at Active Travel measures, I am sure we will all take something away from examining what others have achieved to deliver an alternative to the use of the private car. It is time to get on your bike!

In today’s fast-paced, ever-evolving landscape, the demand for versatile, efficient, and environmentallyresponsible machinery has never been greater. At the core of this revolution are excavators and their wide array of attachments, a technological addition that has transformed how industries build, dismantle and recycle.
The journey of excavators over the past century is nothing short of remarkable. Originally designed as simple earth-moving tools, they have evolved into sophisticated, intelligent machines equipped with cuttingedge technology. Early models focused solely on digging, but today’s excavators boast features like automated controls, telematics, and hybrid power systems that significantly enhance productivity, safety and sustainability. This evolution has been driven by industry demands for faster project completion, stricter safety standards and a greener footprint. The integration of advanced hydraulics and robotic controls has made excavators more precise, enabling delicate operations in confined spaces and complex environments.
Excavators’ adaptability is their greatest strength. With the right attachments, a single machine can switch from excavating foundations to demolishing structures or sorting recyclable materials, all within the same job site.
• In construction, excavators lay the groundwork for infrastructure – digging
trenches, lifting heavy materials and grading terrain with remarkable accuracy. Their speed and efficiency reduce labour costs and project timelines, allowing developers to meet tight deadlines without compromising quality
• In demolition, the need for controlled, safe dismantling is paramount. Modern excavators fitted with hydraulic breakers, shears, and crushers facilitate the swift and safe demolition of buildings, bridges, and other structures, minimising environmental impact and ensuring site safety
• In recycling, excavators have become vital tools for sustainability. They sort, crush, and process debris – separating metals, plastics, and concrete – enhancing resource recovery and reducing landfill contributions. Their ability to handle a variety of materials makes them invaluable for eco-conscious operations
The true versatility of excavators lies in their attachments. From simple buckets to complex multi-purpose tools, attachments allow a single excavator to perform a multitude of tasks, significantly boosting operational efficiency and reducing costs.
The continuous development of attachments has driven numerous industry benefits:
• Enhanced efficiency: Rapid switching between tasks reduces downtime and maximises productivity
• Cost savings: Fewer machines are needed to complete diverse tasks, lowering capital and operational expenses
• Improved safety: Attachments allow operations to be performed from a safe distance.
• Environmental sustainability: Advanced attachments enable better material separation and recycling, supporting eco-friendly practices
Choosing the right excavator and attachments is a strategic decision that impacts productivity, safety and sustainability. Today’s market offers machines built for durability, versatility, and eco-friendliness, ready to meet the diverse demands of construction, demolition and recycling industries.
Innovative features such as intelligent controls, fuel-efficient engines and remote operation capabilities are not just trends but essential tools for future-proofing projects in an increasingly competitive environment. The evolution of excavators and their attachments has reshaped the landscape of modern industry. They are no longer mere digging machines but are now intelligent, multi-tasking powerhouses that enable industries to build smarter, demolish safer, and recycle more sustainably. For companies looking to stay ahead in this competitive landscape, investing in the latest excavator technology and attachments is not just an option – it’s a necessity.
Auctions provide access to quality equipment at true market prices, and with a wide variety of machines available, from compact minis through to large construction models, buying an excavator is easy. However, with so many machines on offer, knowing what to look for is essential to ensure you secure a reliable asset rather than an expensive problem. Now, with auctions becoming a popular route for contractors, plant hirers and owneroperators looking to replenish or expand their fleets, latemodel machines with relatively low operating hours, are now regularly appearing at auction. As manufacturers, rental companies and contractors continue to refresh their fleets, a wide range of makes, models and specifications are becoming readily available, often including well-maintained machines ready to go straight back to work.
Cathal Doherty, Sales Manager, Ireland, with Euro Auctions, shares his 10 ‘Top Tips’ for buying a good excavator, and not a whole bag full of trouble!
• History – Hours are a useful guide, but the machine’s history is equally important. A five-year-old excavator with one or two careful owners may be in excellent condition, even with relatively high hours. Conversely, a newer machine from a rental fleet may have been operated by multiple users. Understanding whether the machine has been used for general construction, demolition, utilities, or quarrying will give insight into its true condition
• Pins, Bushes and Slew Ring – Wear in pivot points is inevitable, but excessive movement can signal costly future repairs. Start the machine and operate the boom and bucket slowly, placing the bucket on the ground and applying gentle pressure. Check the boom base pin, pivot points, and slew ring,

looking for signs of wear. Some movement is normal on older machines, but well-maintained pins and bushes should show evidence of regular greasing
• Exterior Structural Damage
– The external condition of a machine often reveals its working life. Look for dents, cracks, or bends in the boom and stick. Extending the bucket halfway on level ground allows you to check if the machine sits squarely. Damage inside the boom or stick can indicate demolition work, while stone chipping around the cab often points to breaker use. Check rear body panels — especially the offside – and examine belly plates for signs of heavy wear
• Hydraulics – Hydraulics are critical. Extend the boom and stick to inspect the cylinder chrome for scratches or burrs, which can damage seals. Check hoses and
pipes for leaks or damage. While hoses are inexpensive to replace, rigid hydraulic pipes and components are costly. Also inspect the pump compartment for oil residue or signs of previous repairs
• Hours – The hour meter is a useful guide but should be considered alongside the machine’s overall condition. If the machine appears more worn than its hours suggest, investigate further. Service filters may indicate upcoming maintenance, and manufacturers may hold warranty service records to confirm hours
• Buckets and Attachments
– Attachments can add value. A machine supplied with multiple buckets can save both time and expense, while heavily worn teeth or edges may need replacing. If you plan to use breakers,
grabs, or other attachments, ensure the machine has auxiliary hydraulic lines
• Parts and Service Support –Research the manufacturer and model before buying. Even if spare parts are available online, local service support is crucial if the machine breaks down. Mainstream brands usually have strong dealer networks, but regional support can vary
• Tracks – Tracks are a major wear item. Check track pads for depth and alignment, and inspect sprockets, rollers, and idlers. Track chains reveal wear: pins that are no longer round or extended idlers indicate worn bushes. Factor in potential replacement costs when bidding
• Market Pricing – Excavators hold their value well, but price depends on age, condition, service history, attachments, and global demand. Reviewing recent auction results can help establish a realistic bidding range
• Start Your Engine – Always start the machine and let it reach operating temperature. Listen for unusual engine noises and watch for excessive smoke. Check fluids, inspect for leaks, and run the machine through simulated digging cycles. Drive forwards and backwards, turn, and check controls. Inside the cab, ensure gauges, switches, air conditioning, lights, and wipers are working correctly
Time to Bid – At live auctions, observation is key. Signs such as smoke, unusual noise, or heavy engine breathing can indicate problems. Buying used machinery requires careful inspection, but following these checks greatly improves your chances of securing a reliable excavator at the right price

Excavators remain an essential machine on any construction site. From excavation to demolition operations, their efficiency is determined by the machine itself as well as the various attachments and technologies that enhance its capabilities. With shifting demands within construction, Volvo Construction Equipment are developing excavators that deliver greater efficiency, improved safety, and better operator comfort. Pat O’Donnell & Co., Ireland’s only authorised dealer for Volvo Construction Equipment, reports that contractors are progressively looking for machines that combine performance with fuel efficiency and advanced technology.
The increased focus on utilising excavators for various tasks has led to the importance of attachments in modern excavator equipment. With integrated smart systems and the right attachment, operators can reduce costs while maintaining high productivity.
In recent years, one of the most important developments in excavator attachment technology is the tiltrotator. Tiltrotators are well-known for their ability to increase the overall flexibility of an excavator with their 360 degree rotation and leftto-right tilting capabilities.

The extended range of movement significantly improves the level of precision available to the operator. Instead of constantly repositioning the excavator during grading or trenching, the

operator can adjust the position of the bucket directly through the tiltrotator. This allows operators to carry out jobs such as drainage work, landscaping, or road construction with improved accuracy. Surfaces can be shaped more precisely working around obstacles, all while keeping the excavator stationary.
Tiltrotator technology can also be supplied with an integrated oil quick coupler system, which allows the operator to quickly switch between different hydraulic attachments while operating without the need to get out of the cab to connect and disconnect hoses.
While tilt rotators ensure precision and flexibility, other attachments are designed to offer the required strength to perform more heavy duty operations. Hydraulic breakers are one of the most commonly used excavator attachments for demolition work, quarrying and construction projects.
Volvo’s hydraulic breaker range is classified into different models ranging from HB01 to HB48. These breakers are designed for excavators with operating weights ranging from 1 to 55 tonnes.
The anti-blank firing system is one of the most notable features, as it brings the breaker to a halt when the material is fully broken, extending the lifespan of the hydraulic breaker.
Volvo breakers also incorporate large capacity

accumulators, which stabilise hydraulic pressure and enhance striking performance. This delivers stronger impacts while also ensuring the longevity of the hydraulic breaker as well as the excavator’s hydraulic system. The two-speed control system is another notable feature, as it adjusts the impact frequency depending on the material that is being handled. The system is advantageous since it can be used for both light materials as well as hard materials like concrete. Noise and vibration dampening systems are additional features that contribute to the comfort of the operators, as well as reducing stress on the carrier machine and the surrounding structures.
Collectively, these features make hydraulic breakers a necessary attachment for contractors who are involved in demolition, rock excavation, or site preparation.
While heavy-duty attachments such as breakers are used to handle the more rigorous demolition tasks, other types of equipment are geared towards providing precision during finishing operations. The tiltable ditching buckets play a crucial role in these operations. They are commonly used in landscaping, drainage and road construction works. Unlike standard buckets, the tiltable ditching buckets can tilt to either side. This allows the operator to shape slopes, grade surfaces and create drainage channels with greater accuracy. This is particularly important when working along embankments or creating finished profiles where precision is a necessity.
The increased use of advanced attachments indicates a larger shift within the construction industry. Instead of relying on a variety of specialised machines, many contractors are now looking to maximise the versatility of the equipment they already operate. The right attachment can transform the excavator from a single-purpose machine to a multi-purpose tool carrier. The operator can now crack concrete, move heavy loads, shape the surface of the earth, and lay drainage pipes, all with a single machine. Simply swap the attachment for another one to move on to the next task. This flexibility reduces downtime between tasks, lowers equipment transport requirements and allows contractors to complete projects more efficiently.
As construction projects become more complex and demanding, the role of excavators and their attachments continues to grow. These machines need to be adaptable, efficient, and safe to operate in a variety of environments. With the evolution of attachment technology, the excavator is becoming an even more diverse machine on today’s construction site. Pat O’Donnell & Co. continues to support contractors across Ireland with attachment solutions designed to maximise productivity and efficiency on the job site. The new models join the 23 tonne DX230LC-9 and 26 tonne DX260LC-9 models revealed for the first time at the Bauma 2025 Exhibition and launched across Europe during last year.
Powered by the Develon DX08V engine providing an output of 227 kW (304 HP) @ 1800 rpm (SAE J1995) and a maximum torque of 1230 kgf/m @ 1300 rpm, the DX360LC-9 has a maximum digging depth (std front) of 7512 mm and a maximum digging reach (std front) of 11,113 mm.
The Develon DX08V engine is a new feature, replacing the previous Scania engine, at the heart of the DX400HD-9, providing an output of 254 kW (341 HP) @ 1800 rpm (SAE J1995) and a maximum torque of 1460 kgf/m @ 1300 rpm. The DX400HD-9 has a maximum digging depth (std front) of 7512 mm and a maximum digging reach (std front) of 11,113 mm.

Develon Series 9 excavators represent a fundamental shift in how operators interact with heavy machines. For example, by moving from hydraulic pilot controls to a sophisticated FEH system, Develon has unlocked a suite of smart features designed to increase job site safety and precision while lowering the barrier to entry for newer operators.
Like all Series 9 machines, the new DX360LC-9 and DX400HD-9 models achieve this goal by combining 10 ground-breaking technologies and will redefine and set
new industry levels of productivity, safety, operator convenience and sustainability.
“This represents much more than just adding our next generation of excavators - it’s about setting a new standard for the whole industry,” said Stephane Dieu, Product Manager for Develon Excavators in Europe.
“With our new Series 9 range, the machine is no longer just a tool — it’s an intelligent partner. By combining FEH controls with AI-powered safety and a tablet-style interface, we are giving our customers a level of control and site awareness that was previously impossible.”

Develon Series 9 excavators feature several industry-leading innovations:
• AI-powered safety and intelligent E-Stop: The new smart around view monitor (SAVM) camera system uses artificial intelligence to identify humans in the work zone. With the addition of a new radar system that detects objects up to 6 m away, the machine can automatically trigger an intelligent E-Stop to halt the excavator’s swing or travel if a person is detected in the danger zone set at 4 m distance

• Operators can set Virtual Wall digital boundaries to prevent the excavator boom or bucket from striking overhead power lines or underground obstacles
• Full electronic hydraulic (FEH) precision: The shift to FEH allows for stick steer travel via joystick thumbwheels. FEH controls also allow for greater customisation, including joystick sensitivity, response time and joystick button layout, for operators to maximise precision
• Smart-ready grading: Every Series 9 excavator is factory pre-equipped for 2D and ready to be upgraded to 3D systems, featuring built-in IMU sensors for ‘plug and play’ compatibility with providers like Trimble and Leica
• 12-inch touch screen: A vertical tabletstyle touch screen replaces the traditional monitor. It offers a customisable, splitscreen interface where operators can monitor 2D grade systems, AI camera feeds and machine vitals simultaneously
Develon is taking job site productivity to the next level with the Series 9 range. These nextgeneration crawler excavators provide smart technologies and performance and versatility features to help operators work smarter and more efficiently. Together these provide up to 10% greater fuel efficiency and up to 7% increased engine output to allow operators to move more material with less overheads.
“We’ve built on the success of our existing excavator platform with the new Series 9 machines, which are engineered with a full electric over hydraulic control system, replacing traditional mechanical pilot controls to deliver up to 10% greater fuel efficiency,” said Stephane Dieu.
“A new smart around view monitor camera system, Advanced Lift Assist, remote smartphone starting and factory 2D grading system help keep operators safer and more productive.”
With greater lifting power, the Series 9 boosts excavator operators’ productivity throughout the workday. Advanced Lift Assist, a new optional feature in the Series 9 machines, displays the excavator’s current lifting capacity and alerts operators to potential tipping hazards. Advanced Lift Assist is an industry-first technology that uses a lifting force table to highlight risk zones during manoeuvres and on slopes or uneven ground.
“Our new Advanced Lift Assist uses a colour-coded arrow system on the monitor to show operators how to work safely in various terrains,” said Stephane Dieu. “This factors in the machine’s tilt to verify safety even when operators are working on slopes, allowing operators to work confidently without the risk of rollover.”
The excavator breaker assist feature prevents blank firing, protecting internal components from unnecessary wear
while reducing the physical strain on the operator. With auto breaker, constant button pressing is eliminated for smoother operation in demolition applications.
The excavator’s new optional weighing system helps operators easily monitor production levels and manage volumes to make sure dump trucks are loaded to the proper and safe capacities. Plus, the new stick steer feature lets operators steer the tracks using the joystick, which simplifies movement in tight spaces.
The newly-designed joystick gives operators the ability to personalise controls for maximum comfort and ease. It enhances movement with options like stick steer and thumbwheel steer, in addition to traditional levers and pedals. This flexibility ensures smoother, more precise operation that is tailored to the operator’s preferred style, making every task easier to manage.
Advanced Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) technology is used to continuously monitor critical components like hydraulic oil, engine oil and main pumps. This smart system predicts maintenance needs to help minimise downtime and lower service costs. The premium option includes the controller, pressure sensors, vibration sensors to provide diagnosis, and abnormality detection functions for the main pump, swing motor and swing reduction gear.
Available through the My Develon fleet management app, a Bluetooth®-enabled digital key lets operators unlock the cab and start the engine without a physical key.

The JCB Contractor breaker range from JCB Attachments is designed to deliver high performance and durability across construction, demolition and quarrying applications. The range includes 14 models – compatible with 0.8-60 tonne carrier machines. Each is extensively tested and matched to work perfectly with JCB excavators, backhoe loaders and compact equipment – ensuring correct flow, pressure and fitment – as well as compatibility with other brands of excavator and breaker tool carrier.
JCB Attachments –Business Head, Daniel Glenister, said: “JCB Contractor breakers are designed to

work as part of a complete machine and attachment package, ensuring compatibility and consistent performance on-site.
“Features such as internal control valves, accumulators and auto-stop functionality improve efficiency and protect both the breaker and the carrier machine. For contractors and rental businesses, the range offers a practical solution with the durability, ease of use and support expected of a genuine JCB product.”
The larger Contractor breakers have accumulators to protect the carrier machine from hydraulic pressure spikes, reducing possible wear and tear on the hydraulic system. Those for machines at 8-tonne operating weight and above come
with a refillable auto greasing system as standard, ensuring the breaker always receives the correct amount of lubrication throughout the working day. This cuts downtime and boosts productivity. Twin oval tool retaining pins are included on heavier models, delivering double the life of a standard pin, as they can be rotated to wear on both sides. Smaller breakers are equipped with a single tool retainer. Two-speed control valves allow the operator to customise tool speed and stroke length, dependent on the material that is being broken.

This increases productivity and reduces the risk of damage to the breaker and the carrier.
Internal control valves deliver higher efficiency against those competitive products with external valves. This includes reduced maintenance as the oil flow is improved, reducing heat buildup in the system and protecting internal seals. Heavier models also feature blank firing protection, further cutting the potential for damage to the breaker and wear to the carrier machine.
The breakers undergo final assembly in the UK, are backed by a three-year manufacturer warranty
and are CE marked as appropriate. The range includes top mount, side mount and universal configurations, allowing customers to match the attachment to their machine and application. Contractor breakers use a single scaled design with the same maintenance requirements for each model. This ensures that dealer or servicing staff, particularly in rental operations, can easily work on all breakers in the range.
Breakers are supplied ready to work, with hoses, hanger brackets and tools included on applicable models. With a choice of working tools, including moils, chisels and blunt tools, the range can be configured for a wide variety of tasks. Universal options are also available without hanger brackets or hoses for use across mixed fleets.

GB Digger Hire is no stranger to Kubota compact machinery. The company, formed in 1988, currently runs in excess of 180 Kubota excavators, in a fleet of more than 400 machines, with additional models currently arriving at the rate of two a week.
“Since 2012, when I bought my first Kubota, everything that we run at 8.5-tonnes and below has been Kubota,” said company founder, Graham Byrne. “Kubota machines are among the best in the market.”
The company has recently taken eight Kubota KX085-5 machines from local dealer Shellplant, as part of a larger deal for 16 of the 8.5-tonne models. Once they have all arrived, GB will be taking on 10 additional U56-5s. The company also runs 3-tonne Kubotas, 2-tonne Kubota models, 1.7-tonne machines and micro excavators, opting for zero tail swing designs wherever possible.

“We’ll be taking two of the KX0855 each month to the end of May,” said Mr Byrne. “We normally buy 60-80 new machines a year.”
The company’s focus on a single brand is not limited to the Kubota excavators. In each model segment GB Digger Hire has a preferred machine and it will focus solely on that single brand for that part of the fleet.
“We have one brand for each model. It’s a policy that is driven by familiarity,” said Mr Byrne. “We cover a large area and if you’ve got a contractor with an 8-tonne machine and they need to move their operator or the machine to another site, there is instant familiarity for the driver. If we need to supply additional buckets, a hydraulic
breaker or to repair a quick hitch, they don’t have to work out what machine they have, we know instantly what is required on site and can take the right equipment from the yard.”
The policy also works for GB Digger Hire’s service department, ensuring that its engineers are completely familiar with the machines when the time comes for regular maintenance, or for an unscheduled call to site.
“We also handle emergency callouts for utility contractors and they are instantly familiar with the machines when they arrive on site,” he added. “It makes our lives easier and it makes it easier for our customers too.”
While the company’s extensive fleet of equipment is primarily available on a self-drive basis, the business can provide experienced operators when required. Machines are all delivered in a high specification, with quick hitches and auxiliary piping for attachments. Around 250 excavators are also equipped with Safety Shield’s ‘Thumbs up’ system, with a large brightly lit shield outside the cab, letting other operatives on site know if the driver has seen them, before safely approaching the machine.

There are events that reflect an industry – and then there are those that actively shape it. ICE Expo 2026 is firmly the latter.
Returning to Punchestown Racecourse on 22nd – 23rd May 2026, ICE Expo has already reached a defining milestone: it is on course to be a complete sell-out. With exhibitor demand at unprecedented levels and expansion plans already in motion, the event is expected to welcome over 15,000 visitors, positioning it as the largest construction and plant equipment showcase ever staged in Ireland. What was once an ambitious addition to the industry calendar has rapidly evolved into a cornerstone event – one that now plays a central role in bringing together the people, technologies, and ideas shaping the future of construction.
The success of ICE Expo is closely tied to the momentum within Ireland’s construction sector. Following a recordbreaking 2025 event – which saw more than 6,300 attendees and generated over €15 million in business for exhibitors – the trajectory for 2026 reflects a sector that is not only growing, but innovating at pace.

The near sell-out status of this year’s event is a clear indicator of that confidence. Contractors, engineers, suppliers, and manufacturers are all seeking a platform to showcase their capabilities, connect with peers, and explore new opportunities – and ICE Expo has become that platform.
Set across an expansive 20-acre site at Punchestown, the event offers far more than a traditional exhibition environment. Visitors can expect a fully immersive

experience, where heavy machinery is not just displayed but demonstrated in real time, where new technologies are introduced in live settings, and where industry professionals engage directly with the tools and solutions shaping their work.
From plant and machinery to sustainability solutions and digital innovation, ICE Expo 2026 will present a comprehensive snapshot of a rapidly evolving industry.

Behind the scale and success of ICE Expo is a dedicated and highly co-ordinated team working year-round to deliver an event of this magnitude.
Led by Event Director, Danielle McSorley, the ICE Expo team brings together expertise across marketing, communications, operations, logistics, and digital delivery. Each function plays a vital role in ensuring that the event is not only professionally executed, but continually refined and improved year on year. From managing exhibitor relationships and co-ordinating large-scale site logistics, to delivering targeted marketing campaigns and maintaining a strong digital presence, the team operates with a clear focus: to create an event that delivers real value for every participant.
This collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach is a key factor in ICE Expo’s growth. It reflects the complexity of the modern construction industry itself –where success depends on co-ordination, innovation, and attention-to-detail.

A defining feature of ICE Expo 2026 is the strength and diversity of its sponsor network. For companies not exhibiting, the directory presents a valuable opportunity to maintain visibility at the event. With thousands of industry professionals using the guide throughout the two-day showcase, securing advertising space offers a strategic way to ensure your brand remains front of mind, even without a physical presence on-site.

What sets ICE Expo apart is its ability to transcend the traditional boundaries of a trade show. It is not simply a place to display products – it is a working environment where business is conducted, relationships are built, and ideas are exchanged in real-time. The event provides a platform for meaningful conversations around the key issues facing the construction industry today, from sustainability and environmental responsibility to skills development and digital transformation. Live demonstrations, networking opportunities, and interactive features create an atmosphere that is both energetic and purposeful – one where attendees are not just observing the industry, but actively participating in it.

Although Rototilt’s story began in 1953, it wasn’t until 1986 that the first Rototilt tiltrotator was launched on to the market and since then the brand has grown rapidly in popularity and today the Swedish manufacturer produces a comprehensive range designed for excavators from 1.5 tonne right up to 43 tonnes, the largest having been launched in spring 2022.
Following this, in 2020, Rototilt Ltd expanded its operations with a new office in Warrington, northwest England, along with the addition of key staff to support a growing business. Since then, the UK team have been hard at work at establishing a strong cohesive distributor network and support system.
To ensure customer satisfaction and confidence it is essential to have the right distributor partner. The distributor is essential to, not only sell, but support the product. Therefore we are very pleased to confirm that CPS are our main Rototilt dealer covering Ireland. We have worked with CPS since 2022, and they offer the service our customers demand so their expansion to cover
Ireland is good strategic decision. A key element in Rototilt Ltd overall growth plan.
Based in Co Donegal CPS have extensive workshop and support facilities. CPS are a family owned and run business specialising in the supply of attachments. Established 2005 CPS has considerable machine and market experience within Ireland. They are further supported by D T Plant based in Belfast, E R Services based in Kildare and CPSS based in Cork giving customer confidence of a timely response if required.
“We are extremely pleased that CPS and their team are our distributor for Ireland. The team offer knowledgeable advice, quick response to customer enquiries and issues. We offer an excellent product which is now supported by an excellent distributor,” said Andrew Little – Distributor Manager Rototilt Ltd.
“At Rototilt we understand that the tiltrotator is an important part of the customer business. Therefore, we have worked hard to appoint local distributors that understand the product, carry parts but more importantly can respond quickly to a customer issue.”
Rototilt have been working hard over the last four years to establish a UK and Ireland distributor network.

A network that can effectively support the product but also works together.
“We are currently well positioned to support customers across the UK and Ireland. We are excited to increase the Rototilt presence in Ireland and throughout the UK and Ireland” said Malcolm Long – Country Manager for Rototilt Ltd.

As Sleator Plant gears up for its participation at the upcoming ICE Expo 2026 the team have revealed their plans for the eagerly-anticipated showcase of innovative new SANY machinery.
The leading equipment supplier will be delighting attendees with the unveiling of two new SANY machines – the first of which will be the 6 metre SANY telehandler, set to have its Irish launch.
In the lead-up to the show, Jonathan Campbell, Managing Director of Sleator Plant, provided Plant & Civil Engineer with a behind-the-scenes preview, saying: “We’re really looking forward to showcasing this construction site machine. The 6m telehandler is fully loaded with everything, in addition to having the shortest turning circle you can get which is great when working in a tight site. This product will be brilliant for the likes of house-builders and the hire industry as well.”
The reveal of the telehandler at ICE Expo is aligning with Sleator Plant’s continued achievements in this arena – and they’re excited to build on it even more.
Jonathan said: “The telehandlers came into market initially at the end of 2024 with the 14m and 18m range. We had phenomenal success during 2025, with our Regional Sales Manager Amanda McNally being awarded Leading Salesperson for Telehandlers in UK & Ireland at the SANY UK & Ireland Dealer Conference.”
“They’ve been a real sales driver for us –they’ve arrived into the market and upset the apple cart, providing customers with a proper viable alternative to the other traditional brands. As a result, we’re really excited about the addition of the 6m.”

Jonathan and the Sleator Plant team’s enthusiasm surrounding their additional ICE Expo SANY presentation is just as strong, their one tonne micro digger, the SANY SY10. Jonathan explained: “Although it has arrived into the market, this will be the first time many of our customers will get to see the SANY SY10 first-hand. We’ve been really looking forward to getting the machines in stock so the anticipation levels, not just with us as a dealer, but other dealers within the network, are sky high.
“SANY completed a lot of testing and R&D when working on the machine because we’re not looking to just be another micro – we want to be the best micro digger on the market. There are a lot of features that customers at ICE Expo should be very excited about seeing when they get up close to it.”
Also set to be displayed at the leading plant and construction event for Sleator Plant is the improved SY155W rubber duck machine.
“The machine has had a mountain of upgrades, primarily within the cab and

focused on improved operator comfort, such as noise reduction and an ergonomic seat. The feedback from clients has been phenomenal.”
As a company aligned with excellence across Ireland’s construction equipment sector, Sleator Plant is set to not only showcase an insight into its broad product portfolio at the event, but also strengthen its longstanding industry relationships, as well as cultivate new ones, through the strength of its team. Jonathan is clear that the Sleator Plant people are a key asset, with each team member playing a vital role in driving growth and success within the sector.
“We’ve added to the team dramatically and currently have 10 engineers over all of Ireland, as well as Alister McClintock as our technical service expert who offers that extra layer of comfort to customers.”
The company’s strong focus on customer service and after-sales support has been instrumental in maintaining its reputation as a leading supplier in Ireland’s construction sector. The ongoing support and service to clients have been crucial for building lasting relationships and sustained growth.
“We’re delighted with the impact we made in 2025 on the market place and for the first quarter of this year, we’ve exceeded our own targets, but we’re not resting on our laurels,” Jonathan continued. “As always, the theme for every member of our team is customer service. For us to go to the next level, it’s about our continued focus on five-star after-service care.”
Meet the Sleator Plant team at Stand 128 at ICE Expo 2026.

BY GAVIN SMITH, HEAD OF SALES FOR ASSET FINANCE, CLOSE BROTHERS COMMERCIAL FINANCE
In construction, the job rarely waits for payment. Mobilisation, fuel, wages, maintenance and subcontractor costs arise early, while valuations, retentions and payment cycles can take time to convert into available headroom. That timing mismatch can impact day-to-day decisions, creating challenges for even the busiest firms. Cost headwinds are shaping behaviour across the UK and Ireland. Close Brothers’ research with 900 SMEs found energy prices (42%) and inflation (42%) among the leading concerns, alongside interest rates (34%). More than half (57%) said rising overheads have impacted profitability. Over half of SMEs see using external finance to protect cash flow as a good strategy, and 34% said they missed an opportunity in the past 12 months because they didn’t have facilities available when it mattered.
For plant-heavy firms, significant value sits in owned machinery, vehicles and specialist assets. They’re essential for delivery, but they can also lock up capital that could provide headroom, support investment, or smooth the peaks and troughs that come with project-based workloads. Refinancing can be a practical way to turn that asset value into usable capital, while keeping machinery on site and in service.

Because the borrowing is secured against assets you already own and rely on, lenders can often take a more straightforward view of risk than with unsecured borrowing. That can mean more accessible funding, clearer terms and proceeds linked to something the business already has, rather than relying solely on forecasting or trading performance.
One structure commonly used is sale and hire purchase back. The business sells an owned item of plant and then immediately hires it back. You receive capital upfront, continue to operate the kit as normal, and repay the facility over an agreed term. In many cases, ownership can typically be regained at the end of the term, subject to the agreement. The benefit is flexibility without downtime. It can help protect working capital without interrupting operations, useful when a tender is won at short notice, a major repair can’t wait, or you need to commit to materials and haulage to keep a programme on track.
Refinance isn’t the right tool for every need, and it works best as part of a broader toolkit. If the requirement is new or replacement kit, hire purchase or a finance lease can spread costs while preserving operational headroom. Where working capital is tied up in invoices rather than assets, invoice finance can release money against unpaid invoices, so it isn’t left sitting in the debtor book.
The common theme is alignment: matching funding to the realities of delivery, so operational decisions aren’t dictated by timing. At Close Brothers Commercial Finance, we support SMEs with solutions designed to create breathing space and keep assets working when overheads, demand or timelines change.
Close Brothers Commercial Finance is a leading provider of flexible funding solutions for SMEs and large businesses across Ireland. Overseas Plant Exports (OPE) is returning to ICE Expo 2026 with a curated showcase of telescopic handling and access equipment designed for the toughest sites and tightest margins.
As Ireland and the UK’s trusted supplier of Magni telehandlers and Aichi access platforms, OPE will be demonstrating the versatility, build quality, and innovation that defines both brands from compact machines built for restricted access to heavy-duty platforms engineered for extreme reach and challenging terrain.
Magni telehandlers combine Italian engineering with real-world durability. Whether it’s the rotating capability of the RTH rangedelivering crane-like flexibility without the footprint or cost - or the compact power of the TH fixed models, Magni machines are built to handle complex builds, infrastructure projects, and industrial environments where

versatility and uptime matter. Precision lifting where it counts. The RTH rotating range is a standout: 360° continuous slew, hydraulic stabilisation, and reach capabilities extending to 51 metres across the lineup. It’s the solution for jobs that demand both height and manoeuvrability - urban construction, steel erection, glazing, cladding, and plant maintenance. The ability to lift, place, and rotate loads without repositioning the machine transforms productivity on congested or multi-level sites.
For tighter projects, Magni’s compact TH models deliver serious capacity in a small footprint - ideal for restricted yards, indoor fit-outs, and jobs where space is at a premium but performance is non-negotiable. On the access side, the Aichi SR21CJM solves the problem traditional platforms can’t: uneven ground, sensitive flooring, tight doorways, and steep gradients. With a 20.9metre working height, 9.5-metre outreach, and a lightweight tracked chassis (just 3,290 kg), the SR21CJM can navigate slopes up to 25°, pass through
a standard doorway (990 mm width when stowed), and deploy without damaging grass, gravel, or finished surfaces. Perfect for façade work, tree surgery, events, and industrial maintenance where site constraints would normally rule out aerial access.
OPE has been supplying quality plant machinery for over two decades, with a reputation built on technical expertise, responsive service, and longterm customer support. At ICE Expo, the team will be on hand to discuss machine specs, financing options, hire vs. purchase, and the right equipment solution for your next project.

From a small barn in Northern Ireland to a global leader in belt conveying and cut rubber products, the Smiley Monroe story is one of unwavering commitment to being close to their customers. Since 1979, the company has been embedded in the aggregates industry working side by side with operators to keep materials moving.
Smiley Monroe’s history in Ireland was never more evident than when their customer Delaney Concrete, located in Wexford, recently gave them a call to replace a belt which had been running for 20 years. First installed in the early 2000s, the Smiley Monroe conveyor belt operating on a concrete batching plant had suffered a catastrophic tear to the top cover, caused by rogue material. Remarkably when the Smiley Monroe service crew arrived on-site to fit the replacement belt, they found the belt in good condition with the original joint intact.
Hugh Delaney, General Manager at Delaney Concrete, commented: “We just replaced our Smiley Monroe conveyor belt that’s been running since 2006 – and it’s lasted up until 2026. It’s been brilliant. We were stuck in a situation where we had to get

the belt sorted very quickly. We told Smiley Monroe the situation we were in and the guys were out in a couple of days. Everyone was a pleasure to work with. Very responsive to talk to and obviously the quality of the product has been excellent to last so long.”
The Delaney story is not unusual with Smiley Monroe’s product quality and preventative maintenance approach designed to maximise conveyor uptime and belt lifespan.
Through comprehensive Site Surveys and Conveyor Audits available across the island of Ireland, their experts assess every element of a conveyor system, identifying inefficiencies
before they become costly failures. Their Planned Site Services, including conveyor belt installation and replacement, ensure minimal disruption and maximum safety. This proactive, partnership-led approach sets Smiley Monroe apart. Understanding the machine, the material, and the operating conditions is integral to delivering conveyor belts that are built to last.
Smiley Monroe’s replacement belt system, ZIP CLIP® has been widely adopted across a range of mobile and static plant applications, providing a ready-tofit solution to belt changeovers which negates the need for vulcanising, reducing maintenance downtime by up to ten times. When challenges arise, their team is ready with hands-on troubleshooting support, tackling issues like belt tracking and material spillage with precision and speed.
At ICE Expo 2026, Smiley Monroe invites visitors to meet the Giants of Belting – a team and product range built on decades of real-world experience. Visit Smiley Monroe at Stand 14 to discover how conveyor belts built to last can power performance for decades.

Dissatisfied with the outdated, static solutions on the market at the time, Tyrone International Ltd’s roots were established when they saw an opportunity to modernise the industry with their range of game-changing solutions, including full wash plant installations, modular, mobile, bio-fuel and fully electric powered applications.
Founded upon decades of industry experience, and forged in the heartlands of industry in County Tyrone NI, the company have invested heavily in their R&D, studied the market, the machinery, engineering, after sales and service and have listened to their customers to understand the need for a better way.
Tyrone International Limited have solidified their position as a premier provider in the aggregate

wash plant industry, recently completing a 200TPH aggregate recycling plant in Oslo, Norway. With a portfolio of projects spanning three continents, the team have proven their expertise in designing, manufacturing, project management, installation and ongoing maintenance for
a wide range of aggregate recycling and wash plant solutions in a multitude of sizes and configurations.
Inspired by their knowledge and industry requirements, Tyrone International Ltd have
now revealed their latest innovative advancement in mobile aggregate washing which is both securing industry strides and garnering much excitement: the TrackWash Pro 120.
Following significant years of dedicated research and development and patents attained, this state-of-the-art system has been designed to process materials in the same way as a static plant but packaged on a mobile chassis. As the pioneering solution of its kind, the TrackWash Pro arrives at a pivotal moment amid rising demand for recycled aggregates, fuelled by recent UK and EU legislative updates and a growing awareness among customers of the integral role of sustainable recycling. Being the first tracked mobile, plug-and-play aggregate recycling

system on the market, the TrackWash Pro is an enthralling alternative to traditional static plants, which often come with a range of barriers that deter investment. The market’s first plug and play mobile wash plant can produce three high quality aggregates, plus fine and coarse sands from a fully tracked chassis.
The Tyrone International team have not only recognised the obstacles generally related to the purchase of static plants for C&D aggregate handling and demolition operations, but dismantled them, offering an effective solution through the TrackWash Pro which ensures:
RAPID DELIVERY AND SET-UP
With a setup time of just 48 hours, the TrackWash Pro can be operational almost immediately after arriving on site.
RELOCATE WITH EASE
Unlike static installations that may become obsolete or require extensive modifications to meet new demands, the TrackWash Pro can continue to serve various projects, making it a wise investment for the future.
Having the capabilities to relocate the mobile wash plant brings benefits to customers in which they can adapt to changing project requirements or market conditions. Should a project site change or expand, the TrackWash Pro can be easily transported to a new location.
Built on a heavy-duty chassis, the TrackWash Pro is designed for durability and longevity in challenging environments.
HYDRAULIC ASSISTANCE
Hydraulically assisted belts allow the machine to be tracked, set up, and begin

processing materials within just 48 hours of arriving on site.
Accessibility is prioritised, with a 360-degree walkway with all service points easy to access., with multiple inspection hatches for straightforward maintenance.
The machine’s high residual value ensures that it’s easier for businesses to secure financing, allowing more companies to invest in this innovative solution.
Fully tracked mobility allows the machine to operate effectively in restricted site sizes, making it ideal for urban environments.
Complicated planning applications are now a thing of the past, enabling efficient project initiation.

The TrackWash Pro boasts its own fuel-efficient Volvo Penta diesel power unit and generator or alternatively it can be powered by an external electrical source further reducing operational costs. This multi-region operational capability accommodates various voltages, ensuring adaptability to diverse market needs.
To complement the TrackWash Pro, Tyrone International have also developed a range of mobile water treatment solutions. These include mobile sludge and water tanks, as well as mobile filter presses, that can be quickly deployed on-site with minimal civil requirements. As a result, businesses can successfully
manage water resources and treatment processes alongside their aggregate recycling efforts.
The launch of the TrackWash Pro 120 signifies a significant milestone in the aggregate recycling industry. As the construction industry increasingly adopts sustainable practices, investing in effective recycling solutions like the TrackWash Pro becomes essential for both business growth and environmental preservation.
Tyrone International are leading the charge towards a greener future by facilitating the production of highquality recycled aggregates in a simplified way.

Tele Radio is a global leader in the design and manufacture of industrial radio remote control systems.
The construction industry is one of Tele Radio’s most popular markets and ICE Expo 2026 allows us to interact with a wide range of manufacturers, system integrators, owners, and operators from across Ireland and the globe. We have over 60 years of experience in the remote control industry and our team in Tele Radio Ireland, located in Loch Gowna, Co. Cavan, is committed to providing high-quality products and services as well as the support that sits behind the system. The best wireless control solutions are not built on hardware alone. They depend on a partner who understands the industry, the risks, and the way construction industry businesses work. That means supplying equipment that is reliable, intuitive, and robust, and

providing guidance, service, and confidence when the operator is under pressure. In a sector where downtime costs money and poor communication creates risk, that partnership is vital.
Looking to the future, machinery regulation is evolving, and businesses across the sector will need to stay alert to changing expectations around safety, compliance, and the handling of modern wireless systems.
While the detail will continue to evolve, the direction of travel is clear. Safer, smarter, more accountable equipment will be the standard, not the exception.
At ICE Expo 2026, Tele Radio will be showing a range of products suitable for the construction sector, from standard handheld and waist style transmitters to fully customisable automation systems for the most complex control solutions. Our radio remote control systems are designed with the highest safety standards in mind, incorporating features such as emergency stop buttons, frequency hopping technology, user authentication, and built-in redundancy.
In addition to safety, Tele Radio is committed to providing solutions that enhance efficiency and productivity. Our radio remote control systems offer intuitive user interfaces, customisable configurations, and remote monitoring and diagnostics.
Tele Radio’s policy of sustainability is part of our mission to manufacture and supply products that continue to work under the most extreme conditions. The lifetime of our transmitters and receivers reduces the required raw materials and energy. We are committed to minimising environmental impact through sustainable packaging, green energy, more efficient transport, and reduced waste production.
Visit Stand 29 to learn more about our latest innovations. Our team of experts will be on hand to answer your questions and provide personalised guidance.

As part of its continuing export success, Quarry Manufacturing & Supplies (QMS) has supplied, installed and commissioned a future-proofed B2 cone crusher to an aggregates and ore extraction company in Lithuania. As well as supplying and installing the cone crusher, QMS will be proactively supporting the crusher throughout its operational lifetime.
As a former Soviet Republic, Lithuania has many companies involved in aggregates and ore production needing to replace existing aggregate and mining equipment. This was in the main supplied by companies from other Soviet republics or satellite nations. This equipment included crushers and screens used in quarrying and ore extraction in surface mines. Although much equipment was well made for its time, it was generally less productive and efficient than its western counterparts, with the march of time not being kind to equipment of the era.
This situation has led to many aggregates and surface mining companies in Lithuania needing to upgrade their equipment. One such company is an established quarrying and surface mining company, UAB Rudile, which had been running a cone crusher of Czech manufacture for many years.
This was now sadly not fit-for-purpose.
The reputation of QMS in supplying costeffective, yet state-of-the-art crushers and screens, led to QMS supplying and commissioning a QMS B2 cone crusher.
“Our export sales team all speak at least one major European language which has made our expansion into Europe a mostly seamless affair,” commented QMS Managing Director, Jonathan Beck.
“Many of the team are fluent in German which is the primary language of business in many parts of central and eastern Europe. This has meant that communication between QMS, our distributors and our customers, has been as easy as dealing with UK companies.”
The crusher itself was initially sourced by Lithuanian company Vdraga which acts as the QMS agent in the country. Vydraga, founded in 1991, has used its industry expertise to source and supply mining and quarrying equipment to companies throughout Lithuania and

neighbouring countries. Part of the company’s expertise is that it is not only able to supply equipment but also provide full aftermarket care, including spare parts. Vydraga has also formed a close working relationship with QMS which means, that in conjunction with QMS technicians, it is able to proactively maintain and service the equipment.
Following in-depth discussions to fully understand the actual requirements of the new cone crusher, with Vydraga acting as vital intermediary, QMS was able to advise that in order to reduce hard rocks – often river stones – down to 13-35mm, a QMS B2 cone crusher would be the most effective solution. This was chosen as UAB Rudile required an inlet of 115mm x 125mm x 160mm with a capacity of between 43-55m3/h running from a 55kW motor.
“The B2 fitted the customer’s requirement exactly. Added to this was the fact that we were able to install and commission the plant in conjunction with Vydraga, to their specifications. Working with Vydraga, we are also able to provide full aftermarket support. This means that the investment
in the B2 crusher is safeguarded and the customer can benefit from some of the most advanced cone crushing features available on the market today,” said Jonathan Beck.
QMS’s B-Series cone crushers have also been designed to generate downstream process savings in cost and efficiency thanks to enhanced reduction promoted by a new chamber design and by the use of QMS’ C3 Complete Crusher Control. This PLC system controls all aspects of the crusher operation. Usability has also been intrinsic to the crusher design as operation could not be simpler: the automatic start up routine incorporates cavity calibration to compensate for liner wear, with automatic adjustments being made to the crusher setting to give consistent and reliable product shape. Pressure and power in relation to load are automatically adjusted to suit rock properties and moisture content etc. Furthermore, C3 automatically monitors all health functions and provides the operator with information via a touch screen HMI (Human Machine Interface). This screen can be located at the side of the crusher or within a control room via an integrated ethernet connection.
“In designing the B2 Cone Crusher, operators’ feedback and QMS’ extensive experience of servicing other manufacturer’s crushers have been taken into consideration.
Easy maintenance is an issue that has been taken particularly seriously, with hundreds of design details making servicing and installation simpler and more efficient,” explained Jonathan Beck.
“The change of wear and spare parts with minimum downtime have also been incorporated into the design. For example, the liners of the B2 crusher do not require any backing material like plastic epoxy or zinc. This saves the time usually spent mixing, pouring, and waiting for the curing to take place, whilst also increasing safety for maintenance staff.”
With its host of modern features, userfriendliness and high environmental performance, the QMS B2 cone crusher has ticked all the boxes required by UAB Rudile, fitting in seamlessly to the company’s production process.
Takeuchi’s 3rd generation TCR50-3 is proving popular not just as a dumper. It’s the versatility of the TCR machines that is making a significant impact. The TCR50s have become the machine of choice when it comes to working at height and converting to a tracked lifting platform onto the dumper base.
The stable tracked platform provides the stability for a variety of working at height solutions –cherry pickers and lifting baskets. It all started in Scotland, Takeuchi dealer Ramsay and Jackson's customer John Patterson requested the first TCR tracked dumper with a lifting basket. Specifically for electricity pylons installation and repair the TCR with big wide tracks cope with soft wet ground common in post-storm / wet-weather repairs and makes all the difference when working on soft ground.
Takeuchi Dealer in Northern Ireland, Ross Milne (Dieci / Alan Milne Tractors) has sold 80% of Takeuchi TCR tracked dumpers with a lifting platform.
“We find the Takeuchi TCR503 to be an outstanding seller thanks to its highly adaptable size – it strikes the perfect balance between compactness and capability. Its weight makes it manoeuvrable and practical on-site, yet substantial enough to safely support an 18-metre man basket.”
“The TCR50-3 features a robust, tank-like undercarriage that

delivers smooth, effortless travel even in the most challenging ground conditions. Combined with Takeuchi’s renowned reliability, this makes the TCR50-3 an excellent all-round choice.”
Takeuchi dealers have fully embraced the versatility of the TCR machine to accommodate customer lifting applications on job sites across the UK and use
Ascendant Access to deliver the solution. Achieving heights up to 19m and reach of 13m this TCR Lifting Platform reaches new heights and gets onto the softest ground conditions.
Steve Dean, MD Ascendant Access, said: “We were asked back in 2008 to marry our 18m truck mounted boom
to the Takeuchi. Since then, we have seen steady growth in the take up of this product and this current year we have 30 units on order. We have mounted the boom onto the Yanmar equivalent a few times, but I think the TCR50 is the carrier of choice for our customers. To date we have produced approx. 150 units. Most of them are in the UK but we are beginning to export the units to Eire.”
Takeuchi tracked dumpers have always offered maximum safety with the front-facing cab position for maximum on-site visibility when moving, ideal when working in limited spaces. For customers looking for a conventional tracked dumper as an earthmover the TCR503 offers unique features, with both left and right skip-tip functionality (180 degree) offering efficient sideways dumping. With excellent 65-degree skip tip angle and 3,700kg payload the TCR50-3 offers a maximum load discharged with a single operation.

Home Performance Pathway is a new certification for small home builders to deliver high-quality, healthy and environmentally sustainable homes, launched by the Irish Green Building Council (IGBC). It will enable SME developers to qualify for lower cost development finance, helping to accelerate the delivery of sustainable homes across the country. The government is committed to delivering 300,000 homes by 2030 and to reducing emissions 51% by the same date.
The new certification covers key areas of sustainability, such as carbon emissions, water efficiency, biodiversity and waste. It also covers health and comfort indicators such as indoor air quality, acoustic comfort and summer comfort.
James Browne T.D., Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, commented: “Delivering Homes Building Communities commits to a range of initiatives to support small to medium construction companies to deliver sustainable housing. I am pleased to see this collaborative approach led by the IGBC with the financial and construction sectors which will enable SME developers and builders to qualify for lower cost development finance, helping to accelerate the delivery of sustainable homes across the country. This initiative will encourage and support the development of the Small and Medium Enterprise homebuilder sector and further accelerate progress towards our target to deliver at least 300,000 homes by 2030.”
Pat Barry, Irish Green Building Council CEO, commented: “The Home Performance Pathway
provides an accessible route for smaller homebuilders to start integrating sustainability into their schemes. It encourages them to increase their ambition over time, with support from the IGBC. It will help SME builders to thrive in a future where all finance is dependent on proof of sustainability.”
The Home Performance Pathway is designed as an entry level to IGBC’s full sustainability certification, the Home Performance Index (HPI). HPI is a holistic sustainability and quality standard that is well established in the market for larger housing developments in Ireland, with over 3,500 dwellings certified in 2025.
The Home Performance Pathway will enable SME construction companies to access green development finance through a simplified certification pathway. SMEs are
responsible for over 80% of turnover in Ireland’s construction sector, and a significant portion of housing delivery.

JCB Heavy Products Team Leader, Heath Vanrooyen, pictured with a JCB 245XR tracked excavator – one of the models which can use B100 biodiesel from June this year.

JCB is leading the way for on-site carbon reduction by approving a 100 per cent renewable biodiesel fuel for use in a range of its X Series tracked excavators.
The company is set to become the first in the industry to deploy the use of B100 biodiesel in tracked excavators sold in Europe.
The fuel, which is also known as Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME), is derived entirely from renewable biological sources and it can be used in newly-manufactured JCB 140X, 145XR, 150X, 220X and 245XR models from June 2026. It contains no fossil diesel and is made from recycled vegetable oils, through a process called transesterification.
Group Product Innovation Director, Richard Brooks, said: “This milestone development is in direct response to major contractors asking for excavators capable of running
on B100. They now have a practical fuel option that delivers genuine carbon savings and one that, in the future, could be extended to other products in JCB’s range, depending on demand.
“The use of B100 biodiesel complements JCB’s market-leading battery electric and hydrogen combustion technologies as alternatives to conventional diesel power, providing customers with another route to carbon reduction and sustainable operation. Customers operating machines with Syntech ASB B100 can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 93 per cent compared to standard diesel, delivering an immediate and significant step towards net zero without compromising performance.”
Many engine suppliers have only approved the use of B10 or B20 biodiesel, fuels
which are 10 per cent or 20 per cent biodiesel and 90 per cent or 80 per cent mineral diesel, respectively.
JCB has conducted an extensive test and validation programme in conjunction with Syntech Biofuel to allow X Series excavators to be operated with Syntech ASB B100 fuel. The fuel is compliant with BS EN 14214 and certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) standard.
JCB will provide full warranty cover for compliant B100 fuel when machines are specified with a B100 pack and supported by a JCB dealer B100 enhanced service contract. A straightforward conversion process also allows engines to be returned to conventional diesel operation, helping protect residual values and ensuring suitability for the used machinery market.
Holcim UK has partnered with Canary Wharf Group (CWG) and a host of top civil engineering consultancies and universities in a leading industry collaboration to produce a net zero concrete.
The leading sustainable building solutions provider helped design a series of ultra low-carbon and circular concrete mixes in partnership with CWG on Canary Wharf development projects over a period of six months. The development projects demonstrate the performance and viability of the next generation low-carbon concrete (LCC), utilising innovative alternative materials, such as biochar and graphene in the mixes. This research and development programme aims to accelerate the decarbonisation of construction and establish a clear pathway to market adoption.
Spearheaded by real estate developer CWG, Holcim joined together with a collective of industry experts to help solve the LCC equation, including site contractors O’Halloran O’Brien and a collaboration of civil engineering and structural consultants: Arup, Ramboll, B&GE, Thornton Tomasetti, Walsh Associates, Robert Bird Group and experts from Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Cambridge.
The trial pours took place in April 2025 on a full-scale test slab beneath the new theatre venue in CWG’s Wood Wharf, followed by pours in September 2025 creating two-metredeep raft slabs on its Bank Street site.
These two pours followed the early success of an innovative mix containing biochar produced from coppiced wood and spent coffee grounds collected from Canary Wharf coffee shops to create underwater in situ counterweights for the striking, 10m tall “Whale on the Wharf” public art sculpture in Wood Wharf.
The first tests saw the biochar recycled coffee grounds mix, developed alongside the Holcim Innovation Centre in Lyon, achieve an 80 per

cent reduction in net Global Warming Potential (A1–A3) compared to a traditional CEM I concrete, resulting in a projected combined fossil and biogenic GWP of 69 kgCO2e/m³.
In the later trials in September, further optimisation of the coffee derived biochar mix resulted in a projected net GWP (A1–A3) of -14 kgCO2e/m³ when fossil emissions and biogenic carbon storage are assessed together – resulting in a Holcim-first net zero concrete.*
When the biochar-coffee mix is added to concrete, the carbon absorbed by the trees and coffee plants during their earlier growth is locked into the concrete itself, acting as a carbon sink.**
Another key mix included the innovative material graphene and demonstrated a carbon reduction of more than 50 per cent compared to a CEM I control. It delivered higher strength and improved durability, thereby potentially reducing the amount of concrete required in certain applications and improving cover to reinforcement.

The materials are to be monitored and tested by CWG’s collective experts, including Queen’s University Belfast, Skanska and Arup to establish how they behave over a two-year period to obtain real-life verified data which can be used to demonstrate its performance versus traditional concrete.
A final test mix included ECOCEM ACT alongside a control mix made up of a primarily CEM I mix containing Portland Cement.
*The fossil and biogenic carbon contributions are quantified separately as part of the initial assessment, in line with current best practice guidance, recognising the importance of transparent carbon accounting for novel carbon-storing materials.
** The biochar used in the project was from two sources of waste biomass; forestry residues including UK coppiced fast growing hard woods and used coffee grounds as collected from Canary Wharf shops and cafés.

The UK’s highways network is one of the country’s most critical pieces of infrastructure, yet the materials traditionally used to build and maintain it carry a significant environmental burden. Concrete and other conventional construction materials come with high embodied carbon, intensive manufacturing processes and limited opportunities for reuse. As the UK works towards its net zero commitments, the highways sector is increasingly being challenged to rethink how infrastructure is designed, built and maintained – with a focus to look at emissions and the whole-life carbon impact of materials used across the network. Government policy is helping to support this. The latest Carbon Budget and Growth Delivery Plan highlights the economic potential of industries tackling climate change, while reinforcing the need to scale circular economy practices. Reducing waste, increasing reuse and expanding recycling capacity are now key priorities for sectors, such as construction and infrastructure, where material consumption tends to be higher. At the same time, organisations such as National Highways are actively encouraging innovation within the supply chain. Recent calls for new ideas focus on improving worker safety, increasing resilience in highway assets and introducing modern materials that can deliver long-term performance with low environmental impact.
One of the most promising developments has been the emergence of recycled polymer materials within civil engineering applications. Rather than relying solely on traditional concrete components, manufacturers are increasingly exploring how waste plastics can be reprocessed into durable construction products. For highway engineers, the potential benefits aren’t just confined to environmental performance. Polymer systems are significantly lighter than conventional alternatives, reducing manual handling risks during both installation and routine maintenance activities, while limiting the need for heavy lifting equipment on site. Their lightweight design can also support faster installation and replacement during maintenance, helping crews complete work quickly and reduce disruption to live traffic environments. This is particularly valuable on

heavily used networks where minimising lane closures and programme delays is critical. From a health and safety perspective, these materials can also help address occupational risks associated with highway construction and repair. Minimising the cutting and breaking of traditional materials reduces dust generation, including exposure to respirable crystalline silica, while lighter components reduce strain injuries for installation and maintenance teams working on the network.
Just as importantly, recycled polymers support circular economy objectives by diverting plastic waste from landfill and repurposing it into long-life infrastructure components.
Over the past two decades, manufacturers such as Duraproducts have worked to demonstrate how recycled polymers can perform reliably in demanding highway environments. Our range of kerbing and combined drainage solutions are manufactured using recycled materials sourced from everyday waste streams such as plastic bottles and caps.
To date, more than 109 million waste polymer items have been repurposed into civil engineering products designed for highways and infrastructure applications. The resulting components are both recycled and recyclable, supporting circular material flows while offering durability comparable to traditional solutions. Recent infrastructure projects have begun to demonstrate how these materials can be integrated into highway schemes. On the N59 Moycullen Bypass in County Galway, Ireland, a key road upgrade delivered as part of wider improvements to the N59 corridor, recycled polymer combined kerb drainage
systems were installed to manage surface water runoff along the new alignment. The integrated kerb and drainage design allows surface water to enter the system directly through kerb inlets before being conveyed to the wider drainage network. This ensures consistent removal of runoff and helps prevent standing water on a busy route connecting Galway City with the Connemara region, where safety and long-term road performance are critical. The lightweight components supported efficient installation and reduced manual handling requirements for site teams, while providing an effective drainage solution across the scheme.
As circular materials gain traction, industry standards are also beginning to evolve. Updates to the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW) now recognise polymer kerbs within national specifications, signalling growing acceptance of alternative materials within highway construction. Certification frameworks are also adapting. Updated BBA HAPAS approvals for polymer kerbing systems provide assurance around durability, performance and longterm reliability. This is an important step in helping engineers and local authorities specify innovative materials with confidence. These developments suggest that circular materials are moving into the mainstream for highway design.
For the highways sector, the challenge now is embedding sustainable civil engineering solutions within procurement and design processes. Forward thinking procurement frameworks and clearer material specifications will be key to accelerating adoption. Especially when supported by closer collaboration between contractors, engineers, local authorities and manufacturers across the supply chain.
Recycled polymer systems represent a step forward. By combining circular economy principles with improved safety and installation efficiency, they demonstrate how the highways sector can deliver resilient infrastructure while progressing towards a low carbon future. Breedon Group plc has announced new waste recovery and recycling sites in the UK – enabling customers to divert clean construction and demolition waste from disposal and have it processed into highquality, recycled aggregate.
The move builds on Breedon’s established network of five inert waste sites across the UK, which have been in operation for more than a decade supporting lawful landfill and quarry restoration activity. The addition of recycled aggregate production at Ashbury and Costessey further strengthens Breedon’s ability to support customers looking to recover and reuse materials.
Chris Burgess, Circular Economy Commercial Manager
at Breedon, said: “Ashbury and Costessey represent the company’s first facilities focused on producing recycled aggregate from customer and operational residual materials.”
He added: “These new sites mark a crucial step in how we’re developing our offering of more sustainable products and solutions through developing our commitment to a circular economy approach.
“By repurposing unused space at existing operations, we’re creating practical routes for clean construction materials to be recovered and reused, while continuing to serve our customers with the products they rely on today.
“We want to support our customers in managing residual
materials more sustainably, while also using innovative methods to create value from our own operations.”
Both locations will continue to operate their existing core businesses alongside the new recycling activity. Costessey currently operates as a ready mix concrete plant, while Ashbury is an aggregates and ready mix concrete site. The recycling operations will make use of previously unused areas of each site, with no change to existing product availability for customers.
Materials received at the sites will be sorted and segregated before being processed through a mobile screen and crushed to produce recycled aggregate suitable for reuse in construction projects.
Chris Burgess added: “Using recycled materials wherever appropriate helps to reduce waste, protect primary aggregate reserves, and ensures the industry can meet growing demand for infrastructure in a responsible way.”
The expansion strengthens Breedon’s ability to support customers on their circular economy journey, while helping to protect primary aggregate reserves by ensuring materials are reused wherever possible.
Breedon’s existing waste recovery sites have over 6m tonnes of available capacity for this kind of service – and continue to support long term restoration projects, including biodiversity led schemes such as the North Cave Wetlands Nature Reserve.
Green waste specialist Ryedale Organics has added a Hyundai HL960A XT wheel loader to its fleet, equipped with a high-tip Ulrich bulk handling bucket. The loader joins two other Hyundai HL960As, already operating at its Melbourne, Yorkshire facility.
The third generation family business specialises in in vessel composting, with a wash plant facility for heavily contaminated oversize and an optical sorting line. Taking food and green waste from local councils and private companies, throughout Yorkshire and as far afield as Manchester, Ryedale currently processes around 80,000 tonnes of material a year. It creates a range of composts and soil improvers from the waste, for use in farming and landscaping.
Run by cousins and co directors Ollie and Jeremy Kemp, the composting plant sits within an agricultural complex on the family’s Ryedale Farm, which was established in the 1930s by Maurice Kemp. Along with the composting facilities, the business also incorporates an arable farm, a poultry unit and a cold store site.
Waste material is transported into the business in bulk walking floor trailers, before being run through a series of screens, shredders and sorting machinery to remove contaminants like metals and plastics. The Hyundai

loaders move the material into sealed composting vessels, that are aerated through the floor. Microorganisms rapidly decompose the material, releasing heat and water vapour. The material is removed after a few weeks and laid on a curing, or maturation area. It finishes decomposition as it cools, stabilising nutrients, before being used as a soil conditioner or screened again to create either a 10mm landscaping compost or a 20mm organic peat free compost for farmers. The complete process takes 10 to 12 weeks.
Ryedale purchases its Hyundai loaders from local dealer Taylor & Braithwaite. Over the years the two companies have built a
strong working relationship, with the dealer also providing the high tip bucket for the latest model.
“The Hyundai machines are really competitive pricewise,” said Ollie Kemp. “They haven’t let us down and we get a really good service from Taylor & Braithwaite. They are a family business like us and we find that everyone gets involved. We are really confident in their experience.”
All three of the Hyundai machines are HL960A XT models. The machines are the ideal size for the task, as there is a weight limit within the vessels due to the aeration system in the floors, that would make a larger loader impractical. However, one of the loaders is always
equipped with a tipping bucket along with the XT specification’s longer arms, to make loading of bulk trailers easier.
“We like to keep the machines for up to 8,000 hours, though we have gone as far as 12,000 hours in the past,” said Mr Kemp. “We have extended warranties to 6,000 hours and then we service the machines ourselves after that. Our business is about keeping things moving and we can’t have anything stopped. The back up that we get from Taylor & Braithwaite is the biggest plus for us.”
The HL960A XT is a mid weight in the Hyundai A Series range of wheel loaders, tipping the scales at around 20 tonnes, depending on specification.
Powered by a 168kW (225hp) six cylinder diesel engine, the machine drives through a five speed transmission, with lock up clutch. The XT machine has extra long loader arms and linkage, taking the bucket hinge pin height from 4,105mm on the standard machine to 4,535mm and dump clearance at maximum height from 2,935mm to 3,885mm. The Ulrich tipping bucket installed on Ryedale’s machine raises that loadover height further, making it easier to fill the high sided bulk trailers.
Demand for sustainable waste management continues to grow, particularly across municipal and industrial sectors, making in vessel composting an increasingly popular solution.
As a leader in the field, Ryedale Organics’s Yorkshire site is well placed to make the most of that potential demand.

As the global waste and recycling industry continues to evolve, EDGE Innovate is placing a clear focus on electrification – delivering solutions that meet the growing demand for reduced emissions, lower operating costs, and increased efficiency. At this year’s exhibition, the spotlight will be firmly on the EDGE VS420e electric hybrid waste shredder, showcased in a striking limited edition livery created exclusively for IFAT 2026. The VS420e represents the next step in waste shredding innovation, combining the best attributes of both electric and diesel powered systems. Designed to provide maximum flexibility, the machine operates primarily on electric power while retaining a diesel engine for tracking and auxiliary functions – ensuring operators can work efficiently across a wide range of applications. This hybrid approach enables operators to significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions without compromising on performance. The VS420e delivers the high torque and throughput levels expected from traditional diesel driven shredders, making it a practical and sustainable solution for modern waste processing operations.
One of the standout benefits of the VS420e is its ability to reduce operating costs. By lowering fuel dependency and minimising servicing requirements, operators can achieve a more cost efficient process while maximising uptime. The machine’s intelligent design, including advanced load management and status alert systems, ensures consistent material flow, reduces downtime, and enhances overall productivity. Flexibility is another key advantage. The VS420e can be seamlessly integrated into existing waste processing plants or deployed as a standalone unit. Its “plug and shred” capability allows for quick and simple

connection to the grid, enabling operators to switch between electric and diesel modes with ease. This adaptability makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, including construction and demolition waste, green waste, biomass, and municipal solid waste.
Alongside the VS420e, EDGE Innovate will also use IFAT 2026 as a platform to highlight its static electric VS750 series shredders, reinforcing the company’s commitment to delivering high capacity, fully electric solutions for large scale operations. WRAP, the global environmental action nongovernmental organisation (NGO), is bringing circular living into homes across the UK with the launch of its new TV campaign, ‘Rescue Me, Recycle’, airing across Sky channels. The campaign is designed to inspire people to recycle more and therefore accelerate the shift towards a better use of our resources. Despite strong intent, recycling behaviours remain inconsistent.
WRAP’s latest research reveals that while 89% of UK households regularly recycle, 79% admit to throwing away at least one item that could have been recycled, with the average household typically missing two to three items that could have been recycled. Confidence about what can and cannot be recycled also remains low, with just 9% of people feeling “very confident” about what can be recycled.
WRAP secured £200,000 in advertising through Sky Media’s multi award winning Sky Zero Footprint Fund, which provides £2 million in media value to support organisations driving environmental change. WRAP is the winner of the fund’s Catalyst Category, which was created to support charities and not for profits that deliver meaningful impact but often face barriers to scaling awareness.
Produced with creative agency, Among Equals, the ‘Rescue Me, Recycle’ campaign tackles one of the biggest barriers to recycling: confidence in what and how to recycle. By personifying commonly binned household items, such as toilet roll tubes, perfume bottles and aerosols, the campaign gives them

human traits, emotions and voices, inspiring people to care for them more and reframing recycling as an act of ‘rescue’.
The advertising campaign, designed to reach households, supports the long running Recycle Now campaign that runs across social media and other digital channels and culminates in the annual Recycle Week – this year taking place from Monday 14th to Sunday 20th September – when additional ‘Rescue Me’ characters bring to life other recyclable items commonly binned.
Supported by collaborations with government, councils, retailers and manufacturers, Recycle Week brings the nation
together for a week to drive lasting changes in recycling behaviours.
Meg Jordan, Creative Strategy Director at Among Equals, said: “Recycling has a confidence problem, not an awareness one. People know they should do it – 89% already are.
The 79% who are still binning recyclables aren’t ignorant, they’re uncertain. Behavioural science tells us that empathy is one of the most powerful drivers of action so rather than hit people with more information, we made them feel something. We took the items ending up in the wrong bin and gave them a

personality, a platform, and an audience. The strength of the idea is in its simplicity. By giving recyclables a voice and a sense of humour, we put the items people forget about firmly in the foreground. Turns out, even toilet rolls have a story to tell.”
A company has been fined £87,000 after an employee had his foot amputated following a serious injury at work.
The man was working on moveable track at the entrance to a timber treatment chamber when the accident happened. He was freed from the equipment by the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, and flown by air ambulance to hospital, where his right foot
was surgically amputated due to the extent of the injury.
HSENI Inspector Kevin Campbell said the accident was entirely preventable, and the consequences could have been significantly worse.
The company had earlier pleaded guilty to two health and safety offences.
An investigation by HSENI found that limit switches on the plant were not maintained in a safe state and defects regularly
arose which prevented the safe running of the equipment. At the time of the incident, the employee was attempting to reset various limit switches associated with the track, following the process stalling during the treatment sequence.
The investigation also established that production operators routinely bypassed safety features by placing a large metal pin to hold down control levers on the control panel.
Following an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI), a company has been fined £14,000.
The court heard that in 2023, an employee sustained serious injuries after becoming trapped between the trailer bed of a four-axle beavertail lorry and its rear wheel, while investigating the source of an air leak.
The investigation identified that during the work activity,
an airbag on the vehicle’s suspension system deployed, causing the trailer to drop. The trailer had not been adequately supported whilst the investigations were taking place beneath it.
Prosecutors in the PPS’s Fraud & Departmental Section worked closely with HSENI to build a robust prosecution case.
Speaking after the hearing, HSENI Principal Inspector, Justine McIntyre, said: “This incident
could have been avoided. The employee suffered serious injuries, but the outcome really could have been much worse.
“When working with vehicles fitted with air suspension, vehicle ground clearance can suddenly and unexpectedly change with a drop in air pressure. This creates trapping and crushing risks, especially for those working beneath them. It is essential that these tasks are adequately risk
This meant that the machine remained in “ON” or “LIVE” mode when the operators went to physically reset the limit switches, resulting in the moveable track being able to travel while they were close to it.
Following the incident, an HSENI Inspector served two enforcement notices on the company. A prohibition notice was served to prevent any further use of the plant whilst the limit switches remained defective, and an improvement notice was issued to ensure the company implemented procedures to ensure safety related features at the treatment plant were maintained in good working order.
assessed, a safe system of work is in place and suitable control measures are used.
“Such controls range from carrying out the work from a vehicle inspection pit to the use of suitable props including axle stands. Guidance is readily available to employers.”
Following the incident, an HSENI Inspector served a prohibition notice on the company. This notice prevented any further work from being undertaken underneath vehicles where there was a risk of entrapment without means of supporting the vehicle’s body.
