Welcome to the September October issue of Export & Freight magazine. In this edition we have comprehensive coverage of this year’s Export & Freight Transport & Logistics Awards celebrating the winners, the finalists and everyone who took time out of their busy calendars to attend this year’s event at the Crowne Plaza in Belfast. This year was our biggest event to date, and according to your feedback it was another hugely enjoyable evening. But these awards are only a success when we get a high quality of entries across all the categories and this was certainly the case for 2026. For the first time Mercedes Benz picked up the ‘Fleet Truck of the Year’ for their mighty eACTROS. This landmark win for Mercedes-Benz Trucks and the team at MBNI also marked a milestone for the wider industry. As the first electric truck to receive the award, it highlights the progress being made towards decarbonisation and a Net Zero future. A total of 20 awards were given out on the night, and the last award of the evening, Transport Personality of the Year, went to Philip Mehaffey from Henderson Group, a worthy and popular winner. In this issue we have a focus feature looking at flexible transport solutions including truck and trailer rental and a review of IAA Transportation in Hannover. Freeburn Transport announces partnership with Air Ambulance NI Staff complete hike of Slieve Donard and smash £10,000 fundraising target.
We greatly value their continued support and the opportunity to work together to increase awareness of Air Ambulance NI to ensure the helicopter emergency medical service can continue to reach and treat the sickest people. At a fundraising need of £3 million a year, it is only with the support from individuals, community groups and businesses that allows the service to remain operational for everyone should they ever need it.”
Freeburn Transport has entered into a new partnership with Air Ambulance Northern Ireland (AANI), supporting the charity’s vital work while helping to raise its profile across Northern Ireland. As part of the partnership, the AANI brand will feature prominently on Freeburn’s fleet of refrigerated vehicles dedicated to its Lidl contract across Northern Ireland. The branded fridges will provide a highly visible platform for AANI, helping to increase awareness of the charity and the lifesaving service it provides to communities across the region. As part of the partnership a team of 10 Freeburn employees undertook the AANI Slieve Donard Hike on 3rd October. The team of hikers
Manager at Air Ambulance NI said, “We are delighted to have the support of Freeburn Transport as they take on the Slieve Donard hike. The team have set themselves a huge personal and fundraising challenge and we will be there to support them every step of the way.
from Freeburn set an ambitious target of £10,000 to raise for the charity – and they smashed it. Chris Freeburn, Managing Director, Freeburn, said: “We’re really pleased to be getting behind Air Ambulance NI. It’s a charity that does an incredible job, and the service they provide is something that could make a difference to any one of us or
our families at some point. “We wanted to do something that would raise money but also help raise the profile of AANI. Our refrigerated fleet is on the road every day across Northern Ireland, so putting the AANI branding on the fridges gives us a great opportunity to create some awareness for the charity as well.” Damien McAnespie, Fundraising
The partnership reflects Freeburn’s commitment to supporting the communities in which it operates by using its fleet and people to help make a positive difference. With the branded vehicles travelling across Northern Ireland every day, Freeburn hopes the partnership will help put AANI in front of a wider audience and encourage greater awareness of the charity and the vital work carried out by its air ambulance crews.

The majority of our drawbar vehicles are consistently averaging 7.5mpg, and that’s while running with full payloads almost all the time. On the drawbars, we’re routinely hitting 26-tonnes. It’s a brick-and-block operation, so the trucks are always fully laden, and it’s tough work. With our newest models, we’re seeing an economy improvement of around 6% – getting close to 8.0mpg.

MAN takes another major step in fast-charging for heavy duty trucks A major breakthrough in the race towards ultra-fast charging for electric trucks has been achieved by MAN Truck & Bus and its NEFTON project partners, with the team successfully reaching a charging current of 3,000 amperes for the first time. The milestone brings the industry a significant step closer to charging heavy-duty battery-electric trucks at speeds capable of supporting long-haul operations, with the NEFTON project ultimately targeting charging systems delivering up to three megawatts (MW). The breakthrough was achieved during extensive test-bench trials at the Technical University of Munich and Fraunhofer ISE in Freiburg. The testing provided valuable insights into the thermal behaviour of the system, switching components, cooling technology and safety architecture – all critical elements in developing the next generation of ultra-high-power charging for heavy-duty vehicles. The ability to charge at such high power could play an important role in making electric trucks more compatible with demanding transport operations. In the longer term, charging capacities of this magnitude could allow an eTruck to replenish enough energy for around 400 km of range in just 10 to 15 minutes.
This would be particularly valuable for operations where charging cannot take place overnight or during a driver’s legally required rest break. It could also benefit vehicles operated by twodriver teams, where keeping downtime to a minimum is crucial. Extremely rapid intermediate charging could eventually allow operators to use smaller battery packs while maintaining high daily vehicle utilisation.
Achieving 3,000 amperes required the development of several new components within the NEFTON 3000 project. The electrical current path was optimised to minimise resistance and associated heat losses, while liquid cooling was developed for cables, connectors and distribution units to ensure components remain within safe operating temperatures. Contactors and shutdown devices were also designed
to handle the high switching capacities involved, while vehicle integration was considered from the outset, including installation requirements, weight and safety. The latest achievement builds on an earlier NEFTON milestone. In July 2024, MAN presented an eTGX capable of charging at one megawatt, demonstrating the potential of Megawatt Charging System (MCS) technology for heavy-duty applications. However, charging well above one megawatt will require further advances in battery technology. Future battery systems will need cell chemistry, module design and electrical interconnections specifically optimised to accept and process very high currents. Charging infrastructure will also need to evolve accordingly. The NEFTON consortium comprises MAN Truck & Bus, AVL, the Technical University of Munich, Fraunhofer ISE, Prettl Electronics Automotive, the Research Center for Energy Economics and Deggendorf Institute of Technology. The project was funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. Following completion of the project, the TRATON Group will continue the development work, using the findings to advance near-production high-current charging systems, as well as investigating bidirectional charging and MCS solutions capable of handling up to 3,000 amperes.

THE ROLE OF SPECIALIST FINANCE IN BUILDING A FLEXIBLE FLEET Close Brothers Commercial Finance aim to support growth without creating unnecessary long-term costs or limiting future flexibility Transport and logistics operators continually balance capacity with demand. New contracts, seasonal peaks, changing customer requirements and expansion into new markets can all impact vehicle needs, often at short notice. The challenge is how to support growth without creating unnecessary long-term costs or limiting future flexibility. For many, this means taking a broader view of how vehicles are accessed. Rental, leasing and ownership do not have to be competing options. Used together, they can create a strategy that adapts as commercial circumstances change.
provide the means to acquire vehicles and manage the increased wages, fuel and supplier payments that follow.
A TAILORED APPROACH FOR A CHANGING MARKET
BUILDING FLEXIBILITY INTO VEHICLE STRATEGY
There is no single solution that suits every operator, vehicle type or stage of growth. A haulage company acquiring tractor units for long-term contracts will likely have very different needs from a courier service adding vans or a specialist operator purchasing trailers for a particular customer.
The most appropriate approach often depends on how long an asset will be needed, how important it is to the operation, and how predictable the associated revenue will be. Rental can be useful when demand is uncertain or temporary. This might include entering a new market, trialling a contract, managing a seasonal peak or introducing a different type of vehicle without making a long-term commitment. As Gavin Smith, Head of Asset Finance Sales at Close Brothers Commercial Finance, explains: “The most successful companies aren’t necessarily those with the largest fleets, they’re the ones able to adapt as customer requirements change. That often means combining different funding options rather than relying on a single approach. Different forms of asset finance have a role to play depending on how long the asset is needed and the certainty of the revenue behind it. Rather than applying one model across every vehicle, individual requirements should be considered, and a tailored solution can be structured.”
LOOKING BEYOND THE MONTHLY COST Headline price is only one part of the decision. Operators must also consider expected utilisation, the length of customer contracts, how critical a piece of equipment is to service delivery and whether greater flexibility may be needed later.
Gavin Smith, Head of Asset Finance Sales.
to consider how critical the vehicle is to the operation; how predictable the workload is and what flexibility they may need in the future. In many cases, the right answer isn’t ownership or rental, it’s a blend of both.” Taking this wider view can help operators manage costs while maintaining service levels and remaining responsive to customers.
SUPPORTING GROWTH WHILE PROTECTING CASH FLOW Vehicle investment is often only one part of the financial challenge, with wages, fuel, insurance, maintenance and supplier payments covered, sometimes well before customer invoices are settled. As activity increases, these day-to-day costs can place greater pressure on working capital. A company may have clear opportunities to expand but lack the immediate liquidity needed to act.
A rented vehicle supporting a short-term contract may make commercial sense, even if its monthly cost is higher than an ownership arrangement. Equally, an asset expected to remain in service for several years may justify a longer-term commitment.
Specialist solutions can address both sides of this challenge. Asset finance spreads the cost of vehicles over time, helping to avoid a significant upfront purchase. Invoice finance releases cash from unpaid invoices, giving firms earlier access to money they have already earned.
Paul Stephens, Head of Corporate and ABL at Close Brothers Commercial Finance, explains:
Used together, these facilities can support additional capacity while preserving cash for operational costs. For an operator that has secured a new contract, this could
“The decision shouldn’t be driven by the monthly payment alone. Businesses need
10
EXPORT&FREIGHT
Lenders with sector knowledge understand these differences. By considering how vehicles are used, how revenue is generated and the pressures operators face, a specialist provider can take a more informed view and structure facilities around the circumstances of the company. As Paul Stephens concludes: “Fleet decisions should support the wider objectives of the business, whether that’s winning new contracts, expanding into new markets or managing seasonal demand. The funding structure needs to provide the same flexibility as the operation itself.” Rental can help operators respond quickly or test an opportunity before making a longer commitment. Leasing, ownership and asset finance may offer greater value where vehicles form part of the core operation over the longer term. The most effective strategy may therefore be a combination of options, providing short-term adaptability while supporting sustainable expansion. Close Brothers Commercial Finance works with transport and logistics companies to provide asset finance, invoice finance and tailored facilities structured around their operational and commercial requirements.

WHY DEMAND FOR TEMPORARY AND SEMIPERMANENT BUILDINGS IS RISING ACROSS IRELAND Spaciotempo is working with businesses across Ireland to deliver temporary and semi-permanent structures for warehousing, logistics, manufacturing, and industrial applications. Across Ireland, businesses are increasingly turning to temporary and semi-permanent buildings as a practical solution to growing demands for operational space. From logistics providers handling seasonal peaks to manufacturers expanding production capacity, flexible structures are helping organisations respond quickly to changing market conditions without the cost and disruption of traditional construction projects. As industries continue to evolve, the need for adaptable infrastructure has become more important than ever. Temporary buildings are no longer viewed as short-term stopgaps but as strategic assets that enable businesses to scale efficiently, maintain agility, and support long-term growth.
WHAT’S DRIVING DEMAND? Ireland’s economy continues to experience growth across a number of key sectors, including logistics, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, construction, agriculture, and food processing. As businesses expand, many are encountering a common challenge: the need for additional operational space at short notice. Warehousing and logistics operators, in particular, face fluctuating demand throughout the year. Seasonal surges, inventory increases, production overflow, and evolving supply chain requirements often create immediate pressures on existing facilities. For many organisations, waiting months or even years for a permanent extension is simply not a viable option.
At the same time, rising construction costs, lengthy lead times, and complex planning processes associated with traditional building projects can limit a company’s ability to respond quickly to market opportunities. As a result, businesses are increasingly seeking alternatives that provide both speed and flexibility. Temporary and semi-permanent buildings address these challenges by delivering additional space in a matter of weeks rather than months. Engineered to withstand Ireland’s climate and designed for long-term use, these structures provide organisations with the ability to adapt quickly while maintaining business continuity.
WHY MORE BUSINESSES ARE CHOOSING FLEXIBLE STRUCTURES The growing popularity of temporary and semi-permanent buildings is driven by a combination of speed, versatility, and cost efficiency.

One of the most significant advantages is rapid deployment. Many structures can be installed within just a few weeks, enabling businesses to expand operations without lengthy delays or disruption to existing activities. This allows organisations to respond quickly to increased demand, secure new contracts, or accommodate changes in their operational requirements. Flexibility is another key benefit. Unlike conventional buildings, temporary structures can often be extended, relocated, reconfigured, or removed as business needs evolve. This adaptability provides organisations with greater control over their space strategy while reducing long-term financial risk. Cost considerations also play an important role. Temporary and semi-permanent buildings
frequently offer a more affordable alternative to traditional construction, requiring less upfront investment while still delivering a high-quality environment suitable for operational use. Modern structures can also be fully customised to meet specific industry requirements. Features such as insulation, roller shutter doors, loading canopies, HVAC systems, lighting, power distribution, and bespoke access solutions enable businesses to create facilities tailored to their exact operational needs.
MEETING THE DEMANDS OF MODERN SUPPLY CHAINS As businesses continue to navigate changing market conditions, the demand for flexible space solutions shows no signs
of slowing down. Temporary and semipermanent buildings are increasingly helping organisations unlock additional capacity, improve operational efficiency, and support future growth without the constraints associated with conventional construction. Since 2015, Spaciotempo has worked with businesses across Ireland to deliver temporary and semi-permanent structures for warehousing, logistics, manufacturing, and industrial applications. For businesses looking to expand capacity quickly and efficiently, flexible building solutions are proving to be an increasingly valuable tool in maintaining a competitive advantage.

Ben Fletcher Chief Executive, Logistics UK
AUTUMN BUDGET MUST RECOGNISE LOGISTICS AS AN ENGINE OF GROWTH As an industry that covers every inch of the UK, the logistics sector has the footprint and high value jobs to support the government in meeting its target of delivering growth in every postcode. For Northern Ireland, where businesses rely on efficient freight connections with Great Britain, the Republic of Ireland and international markets, a competitive logistics sector is particularly critical to deliver meaningful economic growth. Our sector is starting to drive the green shoots of economic recovery and Logistics UK’s research shows overall business confidence is beginning to improve. To nurture this sentiment, encourage growth and address cost of living pressures, Logistics UK is urging Chancellor John Healey to take advantage of the opportunity presented by the Autumn Budget to keep up momentum. Tangible steps the government can take include maintaining the current fuel duty rate, including the 5p cut; reforming business rates to encourage investment in warehousing, freight infrastructure and supply chain productivity; and including logistics within the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS) to reduce the cost of electricity as battery vehicles become even more prevalent. These measures are not just for the benefit of our sector: if the government wants to achieve a new age of industrialisation while bringing down cost of living pressures on consumers, it needs a cost effective and resilient logistics industry. Every part of the economy relies on logistics to move the goods and materials it needs, whether for building homes and infrastructure, increasing exports, strengthening manufacturing and defence or supporting hospitality and retail. This is especially important for Northern Ireland businesses, whose ability to compete is closely linked to the cost and reliability of moving goods between GB and NI as well as across international markets. Logistics is the driving force of economic growth and prosperity: as a sector, we employ 2.6 million people across the economy and enable more than £1 trillion of trade every year. In Northern Ireland alone there are more than 6,000 logistics businesses employing nearly 70,000 people. With such broad geographical coverage and significant numbers of people working in the sector, it means the logistics profession is uniquely positioned to unlock regional growth, address the crisis of young people not in

employment, education or training and drive the government’s reindustrialisation agenda. The government should work with our sector to help deliver these objectives by helping to shift the focus to investment, in what has been a very tough year dominated by the Middle East conflict and the cost pressures it is driving. Fuel accounts for roughly one-third of a HGV fleet’s running costs, so any increases in fuel duty significantly affect business viability, investment decisions and the cost of living, as these costs move through supply chains. For Northern Ireland logistics operators, who depend on road freight to connect with ports and markets, keeping these costs under control is crucial. This is why maintaining the current rate of fuel duty, including the current 5p per litre cut is key to the ongoing competitiveness of our industry, as well as ensuring that consumers have money in their pockets to buy the goods our sector delivers. Warehouses, distribution hubs and freight terminals are critical national assets, but the current property tax regime can act as a disincentive to investment. Logistics businesses are facing significant pressures from rising costs, yet even before April’s increases in the business rates on warehouses, the industrial sector, of which logistics is a significant proportion, paid more than £7.5 billion in business rates across England and Wales in 2023. While the business rates regime is a devolved tax policy in Northern Ireland, the principle remains the same: the tax system should encourage investment in the infrastructure and facilities businesses need to improve productivity and grow. Logistics businesses operate on incredibly narrow margins and any significant tax rises would have a detrimental impact on our sector’s ability to invest and grow in the future. As operators continue the switch to cleaner battery vehicles, the logistics sector will become an electricity-intensive sector in the coming years, and needs to be included within the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme. The UK currently has some of the most expensive industrial electricity in the world, so removing policy costs from business electricity bills will help the sector decarbonise and keep the UK internationally competitive.
The green shoots of recovery are starting to be seen in the economy, but there is still much to be done which is why we are urging the Chancellor to create a cost-competitive business environment that will nurture the improvements in business confidence into a thriving, positive trading economy that benefits us all. The recognition, in the government’s industrial strategy, of the vital contribution logistics makes to the UK economy and the competitiveness of the growth sectors is a clear indication that the government is listening to our sector. This was reflected in the previous government’s significant £250 million package of measures to support the industry from the effects of the Middle East conflict, which included an ongoing fuel duty freeze, vehicle excise duty concessions and red diesel price controls for rail freight. The recent appointment of Keir Mather MP as Minister for Maritime, Aviation and Logistics, and the expansion of his role demonstrates recognition of the critical role that logistics can play in the rejuvenation of the UK’s economy and we continue to raise the opportunities for growth that our sector creates in our political engagements. Through continued support for our industry, the government can create an environment that encourages long-term investment and enables businesses to deliver growth. The Middle East conflict has demonstrated that events outside the UK can translate rapidly into increased costs for businesses and consumers, due to rising fuel prices and shipping disruption. The opportunity for the government is clear, and the logistics sector has the reach, expertise and ambition to turn the green shoots of recovery into lasting economic growth. We stand ready to invest, innovate and create high-value opportunities in every part of the UK, including Northern Ireland, while building the resilient and sustainable supply chains the economy needs. With continued government support and a policy environment that keeps our industry competitive, logistics can do more than respond to today’s challenges: it can help drive a more prosperous future for businesses, communities and consumers across the country.

Court ruling paves way for A5 Transport Corridor upgrade to proceed By Austin Lynch The news that work on the A5, Northern Ireland’s largest road project, can finally proceed is positive news for those within the local logistics industry. Last year, a judge ruled the project couldn’t go ahead as it breached climate change targets. On 6th October, 2026 a Court of Appeal judgement by Lady Chief Justice Dame Siobhan Keegan overturned this decision saying the earlier ruling was ‘problematic’ and could not stand. Following the ruling, Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has ordered officials to “get on with the job” of building the new dual carriageway, the North’s largest road project. The A5, which stretches 58 miles (94km) from Derry to Aughnacloy in County Tyrone has been earmarked for an upgrade for 20 years but the £1.7 billion project has been held up by funding and legal challenges. Objectors to the project had raised concerns about the environmental impact of building a new road and how much farmland it would affect. While campaigners have for years called on the
road to be upgraded, citing its safety record with 57 people having died on the A5 over the past 18 years. This decision is positive news for the hauliers and transport companies who face heavy traffic and delays day and daily along this busy transport corridor. Once completed, the new road should cut journey times and make journeys more efficient as the new route will avoid trucks sitting in congested areas such as the Omagh throughpass and Sion Mills village. It is also great news for the thousands of commuters who travel along stretches of this road every day. Commenting on the decision by The Court of Appeal to overturn a ruling blocking work commencing on the A5 Western Transport Corridor, Logistics UK Chief Executive Ben Fletcher said: “The Court of Appeal’s decision is hugely significant for Northern Ireland and removes what is hopefully the final roadblock for the creation of an efficient A5 Western Transport Corridor. After years of uncertainty, the priority must now be getting this vital road upgrade built, improving safety, strengthening connectivity and unlocking economic opportunities for
communities and businesses along the route. “Logistics is fundamental to Northern Ireland’s economy, employing around 65,000 people and supporting more than 6,000 businesses involved in making, selling and moving goods. Northern Ireland is also considerably more dependent on road freight than other parts of the UK, with many of the goods the country relies upon moved from ports and airports by road to manufacturers, businesses, schools and hospitals so a safe, efficient and resilient road network is essential to future economic growth and prosperity. “The A5 upgrade will be one of Northern Ireland’s biggest road schemes and is exactly the type of ambitious infrastructure project that will help businesses strengthen supply chains and create the connectivity needed to drive growth across the region.”

£1,000 fine for overweight vehicle
which met the calibration requirements. It was however noted that the driver was not using the tachograph recording equipment on this occasion.
A County Derry operator was convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court and fined a total of £1,000 for a number of driving related offences. The conviction arose whilst DVA Enforcement Officers were conducting compliance checks in the Greater Belfast Area. A flatbed heavy goods vehicle was directed for compliance checks to DVA Weighbridge Site, Garmoyle Street, Belfast. The gross vehicle weight was noted to be 7,500kgs,
therefore requiring tachograph recording equipment to be installed, calibrated and used. Visually at the roadside DVA Officers noted that the vehicle appeared to be heavily laden. When the vehicle was weighed at the DVA weighbridge the weights were recorded as follows: Axle one was overloaded by 360kgs and Axle 2 was overloaded by
When checks were conducted as to the Goods Vehicle Certificate (MOT), records indicated that this expired. Furthermore, when requested to provide his Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), the driver indicated he didn’t have one. Checks conducted at the roadside confirmed that the driver did not hold nor had never held a valid CPC.
1,530 kgs. The gross vehicle weight (GVW) was overloaded by 2,990kgs, or 39.87%. Given that the GVW was exceeded by 30% or more, the vehicle was then deemed to be being used in a dangerous condition. When examined the tachograph recording equipment, was noted to be a Siemens 1324 analogue tachograph
£2,100 fine for failure to download tachograph data within required time period A County Armagh operator was convicted at Newry Magistrates’ Court and fined a total of £2,100 for tachograph related offences. The conviction arose whilst carrying out Goods Vehicle checks with colleagues, in the vicinity of M1, Newry. The vehicle registration mark was initially noted, which returned no result but upon inspection it was noted the registration had been altered using grease, to mask its true identity. It was subsequently found to be a Scania heavy goods vehicle in combination with a Dennison flatbed trailer and these were directed for compliance checks at roadside Carnbane Industrial Estate, Newry.
without an appropriate driver card inserted.
The gross vehicle weight was noted to be 44,000kgs, therefore requiring tachograph recording equipment to be installed, calibrated and used. When examined the tachograph recording equipment, it was noted to be a Stoneridge SE5000 digital tachograph which met the calibration requirements. The driver's digital drivers' card and the tachograph vehicle unit were downloaded and then transferred the data into Inelo tachograph analysis software. When analysed it was established that there were three periods where the vehicle was driven
Furthermore, it was established that the driver card had not been downloaded in 140 days by the operator and the vehicle unit had not been downloaded in 408 days. Under the EU Regulations 581/2010 operators are required to carry out a download of their employee’s driver card every 28 days. A download of the vehicle unit is required to be downloaded every 90 days. Therefore, at the time of detection the driver card deadline had been missed by 112 days, and the vehicle unit deadline had been missed by 318 days. With regards to the vehicle unit download deadline, this was later recalculated as missed by a period of 88 days.

I sincerely hope you’ve spent your winnings wisely! On a personal level, it was fantastic to be at the Crowne Plaza for a brilliant night celebrating our sector and those leading it. Having spent the past year getting to know the businesses and people driving Northern Ireland’s road haulage sector, I found it gratifying to see them receive wider recognition. Many thanks to this publication and the team behind it for making the occasion so much fun and so memorable. Whilst every award was welldeserved and hard won, I must give a special shout-out to McCulla’s Ashley McCandless who bagged Driver of the Year. Sat at the RHA’s table, I got to see his reaction up close and can confirm he either had no idea he was about to win or should be up for an Oscar too. Chatting to Ashley, it was clear this is a man who loves his work, is very good at it and – like all drivers – is critical to keeping the economy moving, in his case Northern Ireland’s mighty farming sector. Our sector needs more folk like him to take up driving as a career, a point we at the RHA are raising in Westminster and Stormont and through initiatives such as our Next Gen group. try and ensure the new service works as well as possible ahead of its roll-out. It becomes available from 20 October, with the current service switching off at the end of November, so time is getting tight, both to get it right and for hauliers to prepare. Some concerns are emerging from RHA members participating
in private beta testing, which in fairness is what testing is for. Time will tell whether these can be addressed such that the new service helps rather than hinders, but with new features such as CSV file upload functionality, the opportunity is there to smooth the process of moving goods from Great Britain into Northern Ireland.
With work also going on to develop a ‘One Stop Shop’ aimed at making Northern Ireland an easier market to access for smaller GB traders, and Windsor Framework customs processes receiving attention at a UK-EU level, there are live opportunities to move the dial in ways that benefit Northern Ireland’s hauliers and economy.

TRANSPORT MANAGERS GATHER FOR INFORMATIVE AND EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE AT CULLODEN HOTEL Logistics UK Transport Manager Northern Ireland conference returns to Belfast Transport managers and transport & logistics professionals from across Northern Ireland gathered at the Culloden Hotel and Spa outside Belfast on 30th September for the Logistics UK Transport Manager conference.
Another of the morning sessions which delegates found interesting was the Diabetes Safety Organisation.
This hugely popular annual event returned to the Culloden and was incredibly well attended, an indication of just how important this event is in the local transport calendar. The event aims to provide all the information and advice on upcoming legislation that busy transport managers need.
Presented by Kate Walker, Founder and CEO of the organisation, she highlighting how a potentially large number of employees in the transport industry are working and living with diabetes – and many more may not even realise they have it. The big take away from this talk was diabetes is not a problem as long as transport managers are aware of the condition, and appreciate how it can be successfully managed, working with employees and raising awareness of the condition in their own workplaces.
With an informative and engaging programme tailored specifically for the logistics industry in Northern Ireland, the conference included a line-up of expert senior industry speakers. The one day conference programme included a number of expert led sessions. Irish material handling specialist Combilift has spent more than 28 years helping businesses unlock the full potential of their warehouse space. By combining innovative handling solutions with smarter storage layouts, the company enables operators to increase storage capacity, improve operational efficiency and create safer working environments. Combilift’s CEO and Co-founder Martin McVicar: “We have always seen Combilift as much more than a designer and manufacturer of forklifts and other handling solutions. Space is one of the most valuable assets our customers possess, and if our trucks can make it work better for them in terms of storage density, then everyone benefits. The ongoing demand for warehouse space, coupled with ever-rising business costs, means that space optimisation is now more important than ever. Additional benefits of course, also include avoiding the operational headache for management and the workforce of relocating to new premises, the lack of bureaucracy associated with new builds or extensions, and the expense of leasing extra offsite storage.” The “Improving, not moving” approach is also a much more sustainable course of action and accords with many companies’ wish to reduce their carbon footprint.

technology and real-world solutions, while also highlighting the challenges operators face as they navigate the transition towards a more sustainable,
connected and efficient future. Hundreds of exhibitors were spread across the huge exhibition site including many of the major
OEMs with everything transport and logistics related on display – from trucks and trailers, to the latest support systems and technology to make the industry safer and more efficient. MAN Truck and Bus, who were our hosts for the show, unveiled their all-new eTGX at the show. Unveiled by MAN Truck and Bus Chief Executive Alexander Vlaskamp the new truck, in striking blue, is a ‘significant step forward for electric, long haul transport. With a range of over 660km and up to 10% more usable battery this was a hugely impressive reveal on the MAN stand. Also at the show Scania unveiled the Scania Dynamic. of up to 700km - and displays of some future charging solutions. Running alongside the main IAA show there was a week of conferences where the central questions of transformation took centre stage - from software, connectivity, and artificial intelligence to the prerequisites for a successful transformation of the industry, sustainable fleets, and the powertrains of the future.
Renault Trucks had the world premiere of the 2027 Renault Trucks T High at IAA featuring the new high-efficiency DE13 R engine, cutting fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 4% compared to previous generations. The Renault Trucks E-Tech Trafic also made its official event premiere, utilizing a modular skateboard platform with an 800 V architecture capable of charging from 15% to 80% in about 20 minutes and delivering up to 470 km WLTP range. The week long show begins with the Press Day on Monday where the world’s media get a chance to look around the show before the general public are admitted. This is the day all the press conferences happen, and due to the size of the show this can be interesting to get from one conference to another when they are running 10 minutes apart. The first press conference on
I didn’t attend the show two years ago but I would guess in the intervening years the focus has turned much more towards battery electric transportation and new electric trucks were on literally every stand. Monday morning was MercedesBenz - who are celebrating 130 years of trucks - and among an exciting range of products on show their unveil the latest Actros including the eActros Lowliner. The press were also introduced to creator Tobias Wagner, aka ‘Elektrotrucker’, who plans the first global circumnavigation with a battery-electric truck. His adventure is named ‘Around the world in 80 charges
with the eActros 600’ DAF Trucks also had a huge presence at the show with a series of important updates across their heavy truck range and an expansion of the battery electric range including XG and XG plus electric models. And over at Volvo they had their full range of trucks including the latest range of heavy trucks including the FH Aero and their FH Aero Electric with an extended range
And sitting alongside the major European manufacturers were several Chinese manufacturers displaying a range of new, and in some cases futuristic looking electric trucks. Some of these manufacturers we will already have heard of – such as BYD – but other names like ‘SuperPanther’ and FAW are certainly new to me. But many of them have their sights on the European market, and it won’t be long until many of these trucks start appearing on our roads.

VOLVO TRUCKS IN A POSITION OF STRENGTH – ROGER ALM Volvo Trucks is continuing its journey from truck manufacturer to global transport leader, with President Roger Alm telling visitors at IAA Transportation in Hannover that the company is entering its next phase from a position of strength. “Everything starts and ends with our customers. We have earned the trust of our customers globally and this is clearly reflected in our strong market share. We have long term relationships and partnerships with our customers and have the trust of our customers, which puts us in a position of strength,” the Volvo President said.
SAFETY FIRST Talking to Export & Freight, Roger Alm also talked about the importance of safety to Volvo Trucks. “Safety is so close to our heart. It is our number one priority and one of our core values.
What Volvo offer is a ‘strong product range with beautiful design, which are very strong values for our customers’ – continued Alm.
“We are not investing in one technology – we are investing in all of them. Earlier this year, Volvo introduced its latest generation of combustion engines, delivering increased power alongside lower fuel consumption. The company says fuel efficiency has improved by around 20% over the past decade, with the latest developments providing a further improvement of up to 4%. The new engines are also prepared for renewable diesel and gas fuels, including bio-LNG, while Volvo continues to develop its future hydrogen-
The latest electric trucks also deliver improved energy efficiency, with Volvo reporting a 5% improvement compared with the previous generation and more than 20% compared with its technology of just five years ago. For Alm, the combination of range, payload, charging speed, efficiency and driveability demonstrates how far electric trucks have developed – and underlines Volvo Trucks’ commitment to giving customers the technology and flexibility they need for the transition ahead.
Strong profitability ensures that Volvo can be a reliable, long-term partner for its customers, while the company remains focused on raising the bar with a broader product and technology offering.
Volvo’s strategy is centred on offering customers a choice of technologies rather than investing in a single solution. The company is developing solutions across combustion engines, renewable fuels, gas, hydrogen and battery-electric powertrains, allowing operators to select the technology best suited to their particular transport operation.
of transport operations, with Alm describing this as a ‘game changer’ for the industry.
Volvo Trucks centres its ‘safety culture’ on a clear vision - zero accidents involving any Volvo truck, protecting both the people inside the cab and all other road users.

powered combustion engine technology. The company is also strengthening its electric truck offering, with eight different electric truck models now available across its global markets. Volvo’s latest electric range includes trucks for a wide variety of applications, from distribution and construction to forestry, mining and agriculture. A key milestone is the latest generation of Volvo electric trucks, which can deliver ranges of up to 700 kilometres. The extended range, combined with increased payload capacity and faster charging, is designed to make electric power viable for an even wider range
Mr Alm recalls that Volvo invented the safety belt in 1959, but famously didn’t take a patent on it so other manufacturers and road users across the world could also benefit. Asked about the importance of the UK and Ireland market for Volvo Trucks, Alm said they have a strong market presence here – both in the UK and in the Republic of Ireland. “These are very important markets for us. We are extremely proud of what we do and have a strong total offering.” With solutions across multiple powertrain technologies, Volvo is clearly betting on choice rather than a single route to decarbonisation – ensuring its customers can continue to operate efficiently as the transport industry moves towards a more sustainable future.

MAN TGX: MORE THAN A TRUCK – A COMPLETE TRANSPORT SOLUTION For MAN Truck & Bus, developing the latest TGX is about much more than creating a new-looking truck. It’s about evolving a familiar product while combining distinctive design, driver appeal, technology and a growing range of solutions designed to help operators meet the challenges of a rapidly changing transport industry. Speaking to Export & Freight at IAA Transportation in Hannover, Michael Voll, Vice-President and Head of MAN Transport Solutions, Stephan Schonheer, Head of Design & HMI, and Dr Jurgen Wagner, Senior Vice President Engineering Vehicle & External Engines, explained how MAN is taking that approach into the next generation of its flagship TGX.
raising questions around range, charging, depot infrastructure, energy supply, investment and total cost of ownership. MAN’s response is its 360-degree e-Mobility consultancy, which analyses an operator’s network and individual operating requirements before developing a practical transition plan.
For Schonheer, the challenge was clear: how do you modernise a truck while ensuring it still unmistakably looks and feels like an MAN?
That can include depot electrification, identifying suitable routes for electric trucks, assessing energy requirements and helping customers understand where and when investment is required. MAN’s charging card also brings access to more than 60 charging operators across Europe under one system, providing greater predictability for operators charging on the road.
The answer is what he describes as an evolutionary approach to design. MAN has established design principles, feature lines and familiar HMI characteristics which provide continuity for customers and drivers, while allowing new technology and requirements to be integrated into the product. That continuity is important because, as the MAN team point out, customers buy into a truck for a reason. Retaining familiar characteristics provides reassurance, while giving designers the freedom to develop the vehicle for the future. But design is not simply about making the TGX look good. With driver recruitment and retention continuing to challenge the industry, MAN believes a truck should be something drivers can be proud of. The company wants the TGX to create an emotional connection with its driver - a vehicle that feels like their own and, ultimately, like a home from home. Individualisation and customisation will play an important role, allowing operators and drivers to personalise aspects of the truck and create something they can identify with. That philosophy extends into the

The company is also addressing infrastructure constraints through solutions such as its Smart Charging Cube, which can provide energy storage where grid capacity is currently insufficient. Battery technology is another area where MAN is looking to provide confidence. Its energy and range calculator uses customer-specific operating data to assess battery performance and degradation. cab, where design, ergonomics, functionality and technology have to work together. Schonheer stresses that MAN does not see design as ‘styling’ added to an engineering package. Instead, designers work closely with engineering, aerodynamics and packaging teams from the outset, balancing aesthetics with functionality and efficiency.
However, perhaps the most distinctive part of MAN’s proposition lies beyond the truck itself.
ENTERING A NEW ECOSYSTEM As Voll explains, customers moving towards zero-emission transport are not simply buying a different vehicle. They are entering an entirely new ecosystem -
Ultimately, the message from Hannover was that MAN sees its role as extending well beyond the sale of a truck. From the distinctive new TGX and its driver-focused design to consultancy, charging, infrastructure, finance and battery confidence, the aim is to provide customers with a complete transport solution - whatever the road ahead may bring.

ENCOM ENERGY POWERS THE HANNON GROUP WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY In a move to make its operations more efficient and sustainable, Hannon Transport is investing in solar power, teaming up with Encom Energy to roll out a series of solar PV projects across its operations. For transport, logistics, warehousing and manufacturing businesses, the energy bill is becoming a cost that’s increasingly difficult to ignore. With large premises, high daytime electricity demand and growing pressure to cut carbon, generating their own power is fast becoming a smart business decision - not just a sustainability statement. Hannon Transport is already turning that opportunity into action. Working with Encom Energy, the group is rolling out three solar PV projects across its operations - at its Aghalee headquarters, Hannon Steel in Nutts Corner and its Lusk facility outside Dublin - helping to put more control over energy costs firmly in its own hands. The relationship began at Hannon Transport’s Aghalee headquarters, where Encom installed a 111kW solar PV system across two roof profiles. Designed around the electricity demands of the site, the system is expected to generate approximately one third of its annual electricity

requirements, reducing the amount of power purchased from the grid and delivering a projected payback of just three to four years. Following the success of that project, Encom was appointed to deliver a further 115kW solar PV system together with three 22kW AC EV chargers at Hannon Steel’s new purpose-built facility at Nutts Corner. As a leading steel stockholder supplying customers throughout Northern Ireland, the new premises provide increased capacity to support the continued growth of the business. Incorporating solar into the facility gives Hannon Steel the opportunity to generate more of its electricity on-site and reduce its exposure to grid energy costs over the long term. Most recently, the partnership has extended to Hannon Transport’s Lusk facility outside Dublin. Here, Encom completed a 151kW solar PV installation alongside four 22kW AC EV chargers. The Lusk system has been designed to generate around 20% of the electricity used across
this busy logistics facility, with a projected payback of approximately four to five years. The project was also part-funded through the SEAI Non-Domestic Microgeneration Grant, with Encom helping Hannon’s through the process from initial design through to installation. For Hannon Transport, these investments are about more than reducing electricity bills. Transport and logistics businesses are increasingly being asked to demonstrate progress on sustainability and ESG, both within their own operations and as part of the wider supply chains they serve. By investing across three different facilities, Hannon Transport is taking a wider approach to reducing the carbon associated with its operations, while the addition of EV charging at Lusk supports the longerterm transition towards lower-emission transport. Importantly, this progress is being made alongside a clear commercial return, rather than sustainability being treated as a
SOLAR POWER
WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM
separate cost to the business. That balance is becoming increasingly relevant for businesses throughout the transport and logistics sector. Warehouses, depots, distribution centres, workshops and manufacturing facilities can be particularly well suited to solar. Many have substantial roof space combined with significant electricity demand during the hours when a solar system is generating. The key is making sure the system is designed around how that particular business actually uses energy. At Encom, that starts with understanding the site. Electricity consumption, operating hours, available roof space and future plans all help determine what size of system makes commercial sense and where the greatest savings can be achieved. For some businesses that will mean solar PV alone. For others, battery storage or EV charging can form part of the wider solution.
There is also the practical question of installing a system without disrupting the operation underneath it. Encom regularly delivers projects within live commercial environments, planning work around the day-to-day requirements of the site so businesses can remain operational throughout the installation. The three Hannon projects are a good example of why there is no single answer to commercial solar. Aghalee, Nutts Corner and Lusk have different buildings, energy demands and operational requirements, resulting in three systems designed specifically for the sites they serve. For businesses across transport, haulage, logistics, warehousing and manufacturing, the starting point does not need to be a decision to install solar. It can simply be finding out what the opportunity looks like.
How much electricity could your existing roof space generate? What percentage of your current energy use could it cover? What could that save each year? How long would the investment take to pay back? Could funding support the project? And could solar, battery storage or EV charging help with the sustainability requirements increasingly expected by customers and supply chain partners? Those are questions worth asking because, as Hannon’s investment across three sites demonstrates, the roof space already sitting above a business could have a much bigger role to play in its future energy costs than many operators realise. If you would like to find out what solar, battery storage or EV charging could deliver for your business, speak to Encom Energy about a free commercial energy assessment.

MAKING EVERY JOURNEY SAFER AND MORE EFFICIENT WITH SCANIA PRODUCT TRAINING BY AUSTIN LYNCH
When purchasing a new Scania, you have the option to receive a comprehensive vehicle handover from one of Scania’s Product Experience Specialists (PES). Export & Freight recently had the opportunity to find out a bit more about what’s included in these handovers. Taking delivery of a new commercial vehicle is more than simply collecting the keys and driving away. Whether it’s a van, rigid truck or tractor unit, today’s vehicles are likely to be a world away from their predecessors, packed with new technology, safety features, driver comforts and efficiency-enhancing systems. Manufacturers are continually evolving their products to make them safer, cleaner, smarter and more productive, with sophisticated technology designed to help operators get more from every mile. But with all that innovation comes a learning curve. Knowing what the vehicle can do - and, crucially, how to use it - is essential to unlocking its full potential. That’s where the handover comes in. A comprehensive vehicle handover is much
more than a quick tour of the cab; it’s an opportunity to understand the vehicle’s systems, technology and features from day one, helping drivers and operators get the very best from their new investment. A comprehensive vehicle handover is available as an optional service when purchasing a new Scania from any franchise partner or wholly owned Scania dealer.
PRODUCT EXPERIENCE SPECIALISTS Scania have a team of Product Experience Specialists (PES) who provide these handovers to new Scania owners right across Europe. Jarrod Griffith is one of Scania’s PES and he

recently visited a number of Scania customers in Northern Ireland to provide comprehensive handovers on new Scania tractor units. Depending on the specific customer these Product Specialists can train individual drivers or in the case of larger logistics operations they train the company’s driver trainer (Train the Trainer) who in turn will train their own drivers. “When you buy a new Scania you can request a vehicle handover tailored to your needs - that could take 30 minutes or up to 4 hours” Topics that a handover will cover include vulnerable road users, other new safety systems and how the driver can use the new technology and features to get the best out of the truck. Scania Product Experience Specialists provide bespoke, in-depth training so drivers understand how to maximize the vehicle’s features. Such training is especially important when customers are taking delivery of vehicles with new engines e.g. the Scania Super with its new 13 litre platform, or when customers with much older trucks upgrade to a new model. When they were introduced over 10 years ago Euro (VI) 6 engines were another major step along the road to cleaner road transport reducing noxious gases by well in excess of 80%.

a certain type of driving – and one of the things a Product Specialist will focus on is driving style and specifically ‘how to drive a Scania’.
FUEL CONSUMPTION According to Scania three of the major things affecting fuel consumption of a truck are: Weight, Vehicle Configuration and Driver Behaviour.
Another key consumer of fuel is idling - it can use up to 4 litres per hour. The advice here is simply – turn off the engine when you are not driving. Thirdly, hill driving encourages professional drivers to consider their momentum, crest management and eco-roll all in a bid to increase the efficiency of the journey.
And while this training will provide detailed and important information about the first two of these it is the third, ‘driver behaviour’ that much of this training will focus on.
And the fourth aspect is power train coasting, which is rolling forward using the truck’s kinetic energy and momentum without applying fuel or the accelerator, managed automatically or manually to save fuel
“Scania are looking to improve driver efficiency by 10-15%. We aim to educate and inform professional drivers how to be more efficient and more productive” said Jarrod Griffith.
And with advances in predictive cruise control systems drivers are encouraged to use this where possible.
“An improvement of 1mpg – from 8mpg to 9mpg – for a professional driver covering 100,000 miles per year equates to a saving of 6,000 litres of fuel a year. And this is a major reason companies invest in driver training – to potentially get a 10% improvement in fuel economy. The driver training specifically focuses on four areas of driving a truck: • Anticipation • Idling • Hill Driving • Powertrain coasting Anticipation is something all professional drivers will do every day but the training puts the focus on a few key aspects including visual planning, early braking, coasting and using the auxiliary braking – exhaust brake and retarder.
Helping and encouraging drivers is the Scania Driver Support system - an in-cab, real-time feedback tool that acts as a personal driving coach. It evaluates driving style across four key areas—hill driving, brake use, anticipation, and gear selection—to lower fuel use, reduce wear and tear, and improve safety. The system has been in existence for 14 years with improvements made every year. It scores drivers on these core matrixes and gives them a score out of 100. The national average score is 60-62% but Scania believe all drivers should be getting a 75% or higher driver scores - which can be downloaded by operators every Monday morning so they can see how efficiently their trucks are being driven.
TESTING TIMES After a couple of hours of product training I had the chance to test my driving style
against the Scania Support System on a short drive from Ballymena to Larne in a new Scania courtesy of Road Trucks Ltd.. Once activated the central dashboard display shows three lines of 5 stars – driving scores measuring Hill Driving, Braking and Driver Anticipation. The system resets to 100% on each trip – so ideally you want to keep it that way. To get the truck up to speed you are encouraged to feather the accelerator - then your anticipation comes into practice looking ahead to identify anything that will make you alter your speed. There’s a lot to take in from the training, but it all makes sense when out on the road and you soon realise this isn’t just about more efficient driving - it’s about making every journey safer for the driver and other road users, and hopefully more relaxed and enjoyable for the professional driver behind the wheel. With some helpful coaching along the journey, and trying at all times to remember what I had been told about smooth approaches to junctions, looking ahead and avoiding harsh braking or accelerating I managed to keep my perfect score, although I have to admit I was only driving a Scania tractor without a trailer. After my short drive with a Scania Product Experience Specialist, I have a real appreciation of the expertise they bring to the handover process. Their knowledge, guidance and training can help operators and drivers maximise efficiency, while ensuring they get the very best from their new Scania.

ACHIEVEMENT AND EXCELLENCE IN TRANSPORT & LOGISTICS CELEBRATED AT ANNUAL EXPORT & FREIGHT AWARDS The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Belfast was once again the venue for the 2026 Export & Freight Transport & Logistics Awards.
“We hear a great deal about investment in infrastructure, too. The plans are ambitious - but unfortunately, some of those ambitions still appear to have hit one of Northern Ireland’s many potholes.
In what was the biggest awards night to date, over 550 guests gathered to celebrate the achievements of a resilient, innovative and progressive industry.
“The industry is ready to invest in cleaner vehicles and new technology, but ambition alone will not deliver Net Zero. We need the charging infrastructure, energy capacity and practical government support to match it.
Master of Ceremonies for the evening was once again the BBC’s Mark Simpson, who began by telling the guests that it was only 105 days to Christmas, after which he introduced ‘Breaker Breaker’, a mental health charity specifically focussing on the logistics industry, as the event’s chosen charity. Now in its 24th year the Export & Freight Transport & Logistics Awards are now a permanent fixture in the calendar of so many involved in transport and logistics across these islands, and they once again celebrated skills and achievements of the men and women who work day and night in this industry. Helen Beggs, Publisher of Export & Freight began said, “Tonight is our opportunity to step away from the deadlines, delivery schedules, customs paperwork, compliance checks and traffic delays - and celebrate an industry that rarely stops long enough to celebrate itself.

But if this industry has demonstrated anything, it is its ability to adapt. “You have embraced new technologies, found smarter and more sustainable ways of working, invested in apprenticeships and training, and continued to deliver outstanding service in circumstances that would test any business. When political decisions create uncertainty, you find solutions. When supply chains come under pressure, you keep goods moving.
And when the weather, the roads - or occasionally both - conspire against you, you still get the job done. That resilience is one of the reasons why these awards are so important. Joining Helen on stage, Editor Austin Lynch said, “Tonight is a celebration – a celebration of the hard work and effort put in over the past 12 months by not just everyone in this room – but by all your colleagues, many of whom are working hard right now to keep the supply chain moving. “Tonight’s awards recognise the companies and individuals who go above and beyond to deliver for their customers: the drivers, apprentices, transport managers, warehouse teams, technicians, innovators and business leaders whose commitment keeps this industry - and our economy - moving forward. “A special word to all our finalists - being here tonight is an achievement in itself. The standard and sheer number of entries this year has been unprecedented, and every finalist should feel immensely proud. “Whether you leave with a trophy or not, tonight is a celebration of your commitment, your people and the contribution you and your business make every single day. Austin went on to thank all the award sponsors for their ‘continued support which makes this event possible’, the judges for their diligence and professionalism and the staff of the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
“Transport and logistics remain the lifeblood of our economy. Every shop shelf that is stocked, every factory that keeps producing, every construction project that moves forward and every Northern Ireland business that trades beyond these shores depends upon the people in this room. “And yet, despite the importance of this industry, you continue to face more than your fair share of challenges.
On the night the Transport Personality of the Year award went to Philip Mehaffey, Henderson Group, who was delighted to receive the highest award of the evening for a lifetime of service and dedication to the transport industry.
“There are rising costs, skills shortages, changing regulations and the continuing drive towards Net Zero - all while trying to keep vehicles moving, customers happy and businesses profitable.
During the evening guests were entertained by Fiddler Adam and comedian Paddy Raff. And thanks to the huge generosity of guests Breaker Breaker raised an amazing £5,010.54.

PROUD SPONSOR OF Safety Award of the year
CNG Demonstrator Drives Northern Ireland’s Green Transition Road Trucks Ltd has had the pleasure of offering one of Scania UK’s CNG demonstrators to operators across Northern Ireland. The Scania R460 6x2*4 CNG tractor unit has been well received, marking a major sustainability shift for the region's transport sector, as these trucks gives operators the opportunity to finally unlock the extra payload advantage that 4x2 vehicles can’t legally meet. Leading the charge is ALG Biogas Ltd, which has become the first company in Northern Ireland to purchase two CNG trucks from Road Trucks Ltd. Following a highly successful trial of the demonstrator vehicle, ALG finalized the order for the two trucks at the recent Road Transport Expo (RTX), held at the Eikon Exhibition Centre. This strategic investment directly complements the company’s existing Bennamann biomethane plant. In a perfect example of a circular economy, the new trucks are slated to run entirely on biomethane produced directly by ALG’s own operations. The move represents a massive step forward in slashing the environmental impact of its fleet, while proving the commercial viability of utilising locally produced biomethane to power commercial vehicles.
Gareth Owen (Road Trucks New Sales Account Manager) with Alan and Gordon Thompson from ALG Biogas Ltd at the Road Transport Expo.
Powering these trucks is Scania’s latest 13-litre OC13 gas engines, which are a refinement of the previous generation, aligning it closer with its diesel counterparts. These engines are also more fuel economical, have a ‘diesel-like’ torque curve and are prepared to meet future legal demands. These 6x2*4 tractor units are fitted with 460hp engines which produce 2,300Nm of torque, which puts it on par with its diesel sibling – just with the bonus of a significant cut in CO2 emissions (up to 80%). They will do approximately 460 miles per refill – thanks to the elongated cab being able to house two larger tanks fitted behind it, which allows them to carry 13% extra gas compared to their 4x2 counterparts. The two Scania tractor units are scheduled for delivery toward the end of October, and the team at Road Trucks Ltd looks forward to supporting ALG Biogas Ltd every step of the way on their sustainable journey.

Real-time vehicle tracking and route management technology further support the company’s focus on delivery performance and operational efficiency.
Rea Distribution has built its reputation on providing dependable, specialist transport solutions across Northern Ireland – combining the personal service of a family business with the professionalism and technology expected of much larger operators.
The result is a comprehensive service offering covering temperature-controlled, pallet and carton distribution, dedicated transport, timed deliveries, express logistics and ADR transport.
At the heart of the business is a firm commitment to safety and compliance. Every vehicle operates to a strict preventative maintenance schedule, with regular safety inspections carried out by approved maintenance providers in line with DVSA requirements.
Operating throughout Northern Ireland, Rea Distribution delivers to a broad customer base including hospitals, pharmacies, wholesalers, manufacturers, retailers and commercial customers. With many vehicles starting their operations from 7am, careful route planning ensures efficiency while meeting demanding customer delivery windows.
Daily driver walkaround checks, defect reporting, scheduled maintenance, MOT planning and regular audits of driver hours, tachograph data and Working Time Directive compliance all form part of the company’s robust compliance programme.
For Rea Distribution, however, successful transport is about much more than simply getting freight from A to B.
The philosophy is straightforward: if a vehicle is not safe, it does not leave the yard. Rea Distribution’s diverse fleet has also been developed around the specific needs of its customers. The operation includes tractor units, rigids and short- and long-wheelbase vans, with vehicles equipped for both general cargo and temperature-controlled distribution. It is an approach that has helped Rea build long-standing customer relationships, with the company viewing itself as an extension of its customers’ businesses rather than simply a transport provider. That philosophy is reflected in Rea Distribution’s vision to become Northern Ireland’s most trusted specialist transport partner by delivering exceptional service, investing in its people and continually improving its operation.
Safety first, integrity, reliability, family values, accountability, continuous improvement and customer commitment are central to that vision. The company’s success at the Export & Freight Awards recognises the way these values have been translated into a modern, highly professional transport operation. With continued investment in fleet technology, compliance, staff development and customer
service, Rea Distribution is focused firmly on raising standards and building for the future. And while the company may operate within the under-30-vehicle category, its ambitions and standards are anything but small. FREEBURN TRANSPORT CELEBRATES DOUBLE SUCCESS AT EXPORT & FREIGHT AWARDS Freeburn Transport’s remarkable year of growth, investment and team development has been recognised with a double success at the 2026 Export & Freight Transport & Logistics Awards. into everyday operations.
The Moy-based logistics company took home the Top Team of the Year award, while Transport Manager Lorne Mulholland was named Transport Manager of the Year, providing a powerful endorsement of both the people behind the business and the leadership driving its continued expansion.
Over the past year, Freeburn introduced a bespoke compliance management app, giving the business real-time visibility of compliance requirements, outstanding actions and operational risks. Weekly compliance meetings bring key personnel together to review fleet performance, maintenance, driver performance, regulatory developments and emerging risks, with actions tracked through to completion.
For Freeburn, the two awards are more than individual accolades they reflect the philosophy that underpins the company’s approach to business – ‘The Freeburn Way’ - built around being proactive, organised, daring and supportive. And with the business experiencing one of the most transformative periods in its history, those values have never been more important. Today, Freeburn employs around 300 people and provides national and international logistics services across Ireland, the UK and Europe, operating around the clock, 365 days a year. Over the past year, the company has grown its workforce by 30%, opened three new UK depots in Warrington, Peterborough and Wolverhampton, expanded its management structure and invested heavily in infrastructure, technology and people.

Lorne Mullholland, Transport Manager of the Year
At the centre of the operation is Lorne Mulholland, whose Transport Manager of the Year award recognises his contribution to maintaining high standards of compliance, safety and operational performance across a fleet operating under a Standard Operator’s Licence with 110 authorised vehicles. Lorne has responsibility for a wide-ranging transport function encompassing fleet compliance, maintenance, driver performance, operator licensing, driver training,
tachograph and drivers’ hours monitoring, health and safety and continuous improvement. Working across Freeburn’s network of sites in Portadown, Lurgan, Mallusk, Heysham, Lusk, Newhouse, Warrington, Peterborough and Wolverhampton, his role requires close collaboration between transport, workshop and compliance teams. A key part of his approach is ensuring that compliance is not viewed as a standalone responsibility, but is embedded
This proactive approach is supported by internal audits, preventative maintenance planning, driver training, digital record keeping and regular performance reporting – helping the company identify potential issues before they become problems. Investment in maintenance capability has also been significant. Freeburn has committed £150,000 to a new purpose-built workshop facility, featuring six service bays including dedicated truck and trailer pits. The expansion has helped strengthen the company’s maintenance operation, with the workshop team growing from four to 12 mechanics. The company also operates a structured fleet replacement programme, with tractor units
AWARDS 2026

replaced every three years and trailers every five years, helping maintain a modern, reliable and compliant fleet. While strong systems and infrastructure are critical, Freeburn’s double award success ultimately comes back to its people. That was recognised through the ’Top Team of the Year’ award, celebrating the collaborative approach of a workforce that has continued to grow and develop alongside the business. Over the past year, six employees have progressed into more senior positions, demonstrating Freeburn’s commitment to developing talent from within and creating longterm career opportunities. Behind the scenes, transport planners, customer service specialists, warehouse operatives, compliance professionals, mechanics, drivers and administrative teams work together across Ireland and the UK.
The company’s leadership team, headed by Managing Director Chris Freeburn, provides strategic direction across transport operations, warehousing, customer service, compliance, finance and business development, with each department working towards a shared ambition – to be the most trusted logistics partner across Ireland, the UK and Europe. That ambition is underpinned by four key priorities: delivering industry-leading customer service; maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance; investing in people through training and development; and driving sustainable growth through innovation and continuous improvement.
THE FREEBURN WAY BRINGS THOSE PRIORITIES TO LIFE. Being Proactive, Organised, Daring and Supportive are the core principles of the Freeburn
Way, and these principles have been particularly important during Freeburn’s recent expansion. The opening of three new UK depots, the development of the new workshop facility and the strengthening of the company’s specialist capabilities required teams from across transport, warehousing, compliance, HR, finance, customer service and leadership to work towards common objectives. Crucially, that growth has been delivered without compromising the standards on which the business has built its reputation. Freeburn also continues to invest in employee wellbeing, leadership development, training and career progression, recognising that business performance and people performance go hand in hand. From its Driver Training Academy and structured development pathways to health screening, wellbeing initiatives, leadership
coaching and internal promotion, the company is focused on building an organisation where employees can develop alongside the business. The result is a company that has grown rapidly while retaining a strong sense of identity. For Freeburn Transport, the double success at the Export & Freight Awards is therefore a reflection of much more than a successful year. It is recognition of a team that has embraced change, supported one another through significant expansion and continued to deliver for customers across Ireland, the UK and Europe. With new facilities, new locations, new technology and a growing workforce, Freeburn is entering its next phase from a position of strength. And if the company’s latest awards success is anything to go by, The Freeburn Way is proving to be a winning formula.

DERRY GROUP IRELAND – DELIVERING EXCELLENCE ON THE ROAD TO NET ZERO Derry Group Ireland has underlined its position as one of the island’s leading food logistics operators after securing three major honours at the 2026 Export & Freight Transport & Logistics Awards. Building on its double success at the 2025 awards, the Carn-based company retained both the prestigious Food Distribution Company of the Year and Safety Award, while also adding the Road to Net Zero Champion title to its growing roll of honour. The latest hat-trick of awards recognises the company’s continued focus on operational excellence, employee wellbeing and sustainability - three areas that are firmly embedded in its long-term strategy. In 2025, Derry Group Ireland cemented its reputation as a trailblazer in the food logistics sector with its double award success. Twelve months on, retaining both titles while securing a third award demonstrates the consistency of its approach and the progress being made across the business. From chilled and frozen foods to ambient products, Derry Group Ireland has developed a fully integrated logistics

operation spanning the island of Ireland. Its service includes all-island chilled and frozen groupage distribution, covering every region of the country with a 95% next-day delivery rate, while 85% of deliveries are completed before 1pm. For time-critical customers, sameday turnaround times of between four and six hours are available with consolidation activity happening within its 30,000 Sq. ft chilled cross dock area, handling up to 3,000 pallets a night Quality and compliance are equally central to the operation. BRCGS Storage and Distribution accreditation is maintained across the business, while McDonald’s DQMP accreditation is held at Grade A, 97.8% - requiring ongoing training, documented compliance verification and readiness for unannounced audits. Derry Group Ireland operates 95,500 sq. ft. of temperature-controlled storage across Carn Coldstore Phases I and II, with additional capacity provided at Coldspeed in
Dublin and Brennan Refrigerated Transport facilities in Waterford and Cork. A new purpose-built Dublin depot, due for completion in December 2026, will add a further 2,000 pallet positions to the network.
LEADING THE ROAD TO NET ZERO The company’s success in securing the Road to Net Zero Champion award reflects a sustainability strategy built around measuring its environmental impact, reducing emissions and providing customers with greater visibility of their own carbon footprint. Derry Group Ireland began its sustainability programme with a detailed assessment of its operational carbon footprint, covering a fleet of more than 100 vehicles travelling approximately 6.2 million miles every year, alongside almost 100,000 sq. ft. of continuously operated warehousing. Derry’s carbon reporting platform has subsequently been deployed across the full fleet and customer network. Every transport
AWARDS 2026
WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM movement is tracked, with Scope 3 emissions calculated in line with the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain Standard, using DEFRA-approved emission factors and weightbased pallet allocation across shared loads. Crucially, Derry Group Ireland now provides live, GHG Protocol-compliant Scope 3 carbon reporting for customers across food manufacturing, retail supply chains, foodservice and export. Separate accounting for diesel, HVO, CNG and electric mileage ensures the company’s carbon baseline reflects the actual fleet composition rather than relying on a blended estimate. The entire Derry Group Ireland fleet is Euro 6 compliant, with a significant proportion now operating on HVO, which can deliver substantially lower greenhouse gas emissions than conventional diesel. The company is also continuing to diversify its alternative-fuel fleet, with CNG Scania G40 vehicles being introduced and its first Volvo electric truck now being deployed. Energy efficiency is also being addressed across the company’s property portfolio. Solar panels at Carn generate up to 320,000 kWh of electricity annually, supporting 100% renewable electricity at the site, while zero on-site fossil fuel combustion is maintained. At Carn, CO2 refrigeration uses a natural refrigerant with a global warming potential of just one, delivering stable temperature management with a significantly lower environmental impact than the F-gases it replaces. Together, these measures demonstrate that Derry Group Ireland’s approach to net zero is not based on a single initiative, but on a programme of investment spanning transport, refrigeration, warehousing, energy and carbon reporting.
A CULTURE BUILT AROUND SAFETY While sustainability has become an increasingly important part of the company’s strategy, Derry Group Ireland’s commitment to its people remains at the heart of the business. That commitment was recognised with the company’s second consecutive Safety Award at the Export & Freight Transport & Logistics Awards. Derry Group Ireland operates a comprehensive Health & Safety policy across its four depots in Carn, Dublin, Waterford and Cork, as well
as across its fleet of more than 100 vehicles. The policy is broken down by department and location, ensuring that the specific risks associated with each operational environment are addressed for staff, contractors and visitors. Safety is reinforced through a daily and weekly operational cadence. Daily huddles at each site allow issues to be identified and actioned within the same shift, while weekly cross-site operations meetings help maintain consistent standards and ensure concerns identified at one depot are communicated across the wider network. Electronic walk-around checks are completed digitally before every vehicle departure, with records retained for compliance and audit purposes. Digital absence management provides realtime oversight of workforce health across the business, while the Thrive engagement app is used to deliver safety communications, compliance updates and onboarding materials to more than 300 employees across different sites and shift patterns. The company’s safety culture is also driven from the top. Patrick Derry’s daily presence on the operational floor, together with the established practice of directors working alongside operational teams during periods of sustained demand, helps create an environment where safety is viewed as a shared organisational responsibility rather than simply a compliance function.
That people-first approach extends beyond physical safety. Mental Health First Aiders are in place across the operation, trained to recognise signs of distress and support colleagues towards appropriate help. Derry Group Ireland also works with Cancer Focus NI to provide regular on-site health screenings.
THREE AWARDS – ONE CLEAR DIRECTION For Derry Group Ireland, the three awards secured at this year’s Export & Freight Transport & Logistics Awards provide a strong endorsement of its strategy. Food Distribution Company of the Year recognises the scale, reliability and quality of its operation; the Safety Award highlights its commitment to protecting and supporting its people; while the Road to Net Zero Champion award reflects the investment and measurable progress being made to reduce its environmental impact. Together, they tell a bigger story - of a business continuing to grow while maintaining high standards, investing in its people and taking meaningful steps towards a lower-carbon future. For Derry Group Ireland, excellence in logistics is about more than moving products efficiently. It is about delivering for customers, looking after its people and building a more sustainable operation for the future.

DOUBLE WIN FOR MERCEDES-BENZ UNDERLINES SUCCESS OF LATEST MODELS Mercedes-Benz has double cause for celebration after two of its latest models won the Truck of the Year and Van of the Year titles at the Export & Freight Transport & Logistics Awards 2026. Winning the Truck of the year with the eACTROS 600 LS 4x2 was hugely significant for Mercedes Benz and for the team at MBNI Truck & Van. Not only was this the first time in the history of the awards that Mercedes-Benz won the highly coveted ‘Fleet Truck of the Year’ Award, but by winning it with the eACTROS it also marked the first time the award has gone to a BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle). Mercedes-Benz had further cause for celebration as the SPRINTER 317 L3 H2 PRO picked up the Van of the Year title. This isn’t the first time the SPRINTER has won this award, but its continued success proves that the latest version of the iconic van is still ahead of the competition. Both awards were presented to members of the MBNI Truck & Van team at the glittering gala dinner at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in South Belfast. It was a particularly successful week for Mercedes-Benz Trucks, with the eActros 600 victory in Belfast coming just one day
after the Mercedes-Benz Actros L ProCabin was awarded Fleet Truck of the Year 2026 at the Motor Transport Awards. The double success at the Export & Freight Awards highlights the breadth of the Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle range, with both the latest electric truck and Sprinter van demonstrating the manufacturer’s focus on efficiency, safety, technology, comfort and driver appeal.
ELECTRIC POWER MEETS LONG-DISTANCE CAPABILITY The Truck of the Year title for the MercedesBenz eACTROS 600 LS 4X2 represents a major step forward in sustainable long-distance transport, combining powerful performance with exceptional efficiency, advanced safety technology and outstanding driver comfort. With its 600-kWh usable battery capacity, aerodynamic ProCabin and sophisticated driver-assistance systems, the eActros 600 was the one which most impressed the judges
who all got the opportunity to drive the new truck on a demanding, on-road circuit. Designed specifically for demanding long-haul applications, the eActros 600 has been developed to deliver the kind of range, performance and practicality required by operators making the transition from diesel to electric power. At the heart of the truck is its large-capacity battery pack, which provides the energy required for long-distance operations while also allowing the vehicle to deliver strong performance while fully loaded. The electric powertrain provides instant torque, smooth acceleration and a quiet driving experience. Aerodynamics also play a crucial role in maximising efficiency. The ProCabin design has been developed to reduce air resistance. For operators, however, the appeal of the eActros 600 goes beyond its electric drivetrain. Mercedes-Benz has packed the truck with technology designed to make the vehicle safer, easier and more comfortable to operate, and for the driver to live with. Advanced driver assistance systems provide additional support in demanding traffic situations, while the latest generation of safety technology is designed to help protect both the driver and other road users. Inside the cab, the emphasis is firmly on the driver. The eActros 600 combines a spacious, modern working environment with the comfort and refinement expected from Mercedes-Benz The eActros 600 therefore demonstrates that the move towards zero-tailpipeemission transport does not necessarily mean compromising on the qualities that matter most to professional drivers and fleet operators.
STRENGTH OF THE SPRINTER The Van of the Year award for the MercedesBenz SPRINTER 317 L3 H2 PRO provides further evidence of the strength of the Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle line-up. The winning SPRINTER 317 L3 H2 PRO offers operators a combination of load
104
EXPORT&FREIGHT
AWARDS 2026
WWW.EXPORTANDFREIGHT.COM capacity, usable space and vehicle dimensions that makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, from general distribution and logistics to specialist business use. A major strength of the Sprinter is the breadth of configurations available, allowing operators to specify the vehicle around the requirements of their particular operation. The L3 H2 configuration provides generous load space while maintaining the driving characteristics and manoeuvrability expected from a large van. For the Export & Freight Awards judges, the vehicle’s strengths were put to the ultimate test on the road. In the Van of the Year competition, a panel of industry experts was presented to by each of the manufacturers, outlining the quality and value of their respective models. The panel members then had the opportunity to drive each vehicle on a set route organised
by Transport Training Services in Nutts Corner. The judges scored the vehicles across a series of key criteria, including comfort, visibility, manoeuvrability, safety features, vehicle performance and handling, technology and connectivity, accessibility and overall driving experience. After the votes were counted, it was the Sprinter that emerged as the overall winner. The Sprinter’s success reflects the importance of getting the fundamentals right in the commercial van sector. While technology continues to evolve rapidly, drivers and operators still need a vehicle that is comfortable to spend long hours in, easy to manoeuvre in busy urban environments, practical to load and unload, and capable of delivering dependable performance day after day.
The Sprinter combines these qualities with a comprehensive suite of modern safety and connectivity features, helping operators improve both productivity and driver satisfaction.
DOUBLE WIN For Mercedes-Benz, securing both the Truck of the Year and Van of the Year titles represents a significant achievement and provides a strong endorsement of its latest commercial vehicle products. The eActros 600 demonstrates how electric power is becoming a realistic proposition for long-distance freight transport, while the Sprinter continues to evolve as a highly capable and versatile tool for businesses across a wide range of sectors. For Mercedes-Benz and MBNI Truck & Van, it was a double celebration - and one that underlines the continuing strength of the threepointed star in the commercial vehicle market.

DERRY BROS SHIPPING Winning the Excellence in Customer Service Award at this year’s Export & Freight Transport & Logistics Awards was an incredibly proud moment for Brigid Derry and her entire team at Derry Bros. Derry Bros Shipping is where this story began. Established in 1964, the business has grown and changed considerably over the past 60 years, but the importance they place on looking after their customers has never changed. As a family business, Derry Bros have always believed that good service comes down to knowing your customers, understanding their business and being there when they need you. Many of the relationships Derry Bros have today have been built over years, and that personal connection is something they are very proud of. In shipping, unexpected changes are part of the job. It is during these situations that this team’s commitment to their customers really comes through. When a challenge arises, their team will pick up the phone, explore the options available and work with the customer to find the best solution to keep their freight moving. Having 24/7 support is a big part of that. Derry Bros Shipping customers know there is someone there to help, whether it is during the working
day or outside normal office hours. To have that level of commitment recognised by the judges, who praised Derry Bros responsiveness, specialist expertise and genuine 24/7 support, means a great deal to Brigid and the team. “We are also continuing to invest in the future of Derry Bros Shipping. Our technology and systems continue to develop, including the redevelopment of our Shipping Diary, helping our team work more efficiently and provide an
even better service to our customers. For me, technology should always enhance the service we provide without taking away from the personal contact our customers value,” said Brigid Derry. This award is something the whole team can be proud of. “Our people are at the heart of the service we provide, and after more than 60 years, we remain just as committed to looking after our customers and keeping their businesses moving.’

DERRY BROS CUSTOMS CLEARANCE As Derry Bros has grown over the years, so too have the needs of its customers.
500,000 customs declarations annually, with more than 90% cleared within 60 minutes. In one particularly complex project, more than 1,700 commodity codes were processed in under an hour, reducing operational man-hours by more than 80%.”
As international trade has become more complex, particularly in recent years, Derry Bros Customs Clearance has continued to develop their services to meet the changing needs of its customers. Derry Bros Customs Clearance has grown from this, allowing them to provide customers with the expertise and support they need to navigate the customs process. Just like Shipping, the Derry Bros approach to Customs has always been centred around its customers. The business knows how complex customs can be, which is why they place so much importance on providing an experienced, approachable team that their customers can rely on for support and guidance. That has become increasingly important following Brexit. Moving goods between Great

“We have invested heavily in making that process easier, including developing our own customs platform, Digicom.
The impact of that investment can be seen in the scale and speed of the service they provide today. “Today, we process approximately
Behind that technology is an experienced team with the knowledge and expertise customers can rely on when they need support. “Winning the Excellence in Customer Service Award is particularly special because it reflects a commitment that runs throughout the whole business. DOUBLE AWARD SUCCESS UNDERLINES MANFREIGHT’S LOGISTICS EXCELLENCE Manfreight’s double success at this year’s Export & Freight Transport & Logistics Awards, where it claimed both Chilled Operator of the Year and Logistics Services Partner of the Year, is a strong reflection of the company’s investment in technology, infrastructure and, above all, customer-focused logistics solutions. Operating one of the largest temperature-controlled transport fleets across Ireland and the UK, Manfreight has built a sophisticated cold chain operation capable of supporting some of the most demanding requirements across the FMCG, pharmaceutical, retail and agri-food sectors.
live trailer temperature monitoring and integrated telematics provide realtime visibility of vehicle and product movements, allowing operational teams to proactively monitor equipment performance, temperature compliance and delivery progress.
Its fleet now comprises more than 340 company-owned trucks and over 700 trailers, backed by sustained investment in new equipment and technology. Since 2023 alone, Manfreight has introduced 100 new trucks, including 50 Volvo FH500 Aero units, alongside 130 Schmitz Cargobull S.KO COOL refrigerated trailers.
Combined with preventative maintenance, structured fleet replacement, route optimisation and sophisticated transport planning systems, this technology helps Manfreight maintain an impressive 99% Delivery On-Time and Temperature score while maintaining the highest standards of cold chain compliance and product integrity.
The investment has been designed not simply to expand capacity, but to deliver greater efficiency, reliability and temperature-controlled capability across the network. Advanced refrigeration systems,

The company’s ability to provide chilled, frozen, ambient and multi-temperature logistics solutions also gives customers considerable flexibility, with services ranging from full-
load transport and groupage distribution to timed deliveries, next-day services, multi-drop operations, retail RDC deliveries and dedicated contract logistics. However, it is Manfreight’s investment in infrastructure that arguably provides the most visible demonstration of its ambitions. Its logistics platform now incorporates 165,000 sq. ft. of strategically located warehousing capacity, including a 50,000 sq. ft. chilled warehouse and 100,000 sq. ft. ambient facility at Belfast Harbour, together with a 15,000 sq. ft. refrigerated distribution centre in Skelmersdale. The £14 million Belfast chilled facility is particularly significant. Located less than three minutes from Belfast’s three major ferry terminals, it is the first purpose-built chilled warehouse of its kind in Northern Ireland for more
than 25 years and has achieved BRCGS AA accreditation. Built to BREEAM Excellence standards, the facility incorporates advanced refrigeration, renewable energy generation and intelligent automation. Its Sabroe ChillPAC ammonia refrigeration system has zero global warming potential and uses intelligent load management to adjust operation according to demand. The system has already contributed to double-digit energy savings since commissioning. Across the Irish Sea, Manfreight’s Skelmersdale facility provides an important consolidation hub for traffic moving between Ireland and Great Britain. The BRCGS AA-accredited site achieved a PASS rating in its first APHA NIRMS audit, reinforcing the company’s focus on compliance, food safety and operational excellence.

A CONNECTED SUPPLY CHAIN
software development, systems integration, testing and user acceptance, the new operation successfully went live in July 2024.
The Logistics Services Partner of the Year award recognised another important aspect of Manfreight’s proposition - its ability to move beyond traditional transport provision and become an integral part of a customer’s wider supply chain.
Crucially, the Belfast hub became the customer’s purposebuilt dispatch platform, taking responsibility for the logistics functions and allowing the customer’s manufacturing sites to concentrate on production.
For this award Manfreight focused on a leading privately owned food producer whose growth through acquisitions had created an increasingly complex logistics operation. Multiple production locations and logistics functions - including transport, warehousing, inventory management, customs and customer fulfilment - were being managed across different systems and service providers. While individual elements were operating effectively, there was no single operational view of the complete supply chain and no single point of accountability. Manfreight recognised that the customer did not simply need another transport provider - it needed a partner capable of bringing the different elements together into one connected operation. Working closely with the customer
and technology partners, Manfreight developed an integrated logistics solution centred around its Belfast Chilled Logistics Facility.
inventory, product characteristics, transport requirements, customs processes, food safety controls and IT infrastructure.
Transport, warehousing, crossdocking, pick and pack, inventory management and distribution were brought together under one operation, supported by bespoke EDI integration, cloudbased systems and dedicated account management.
The customer also visited the Belfast Chilled Logistics Hub during its development, ensuring the facility could meet both current requirements and future growth.
The project involved an extensive discovery and scoping exercise, with joint teams visiting manufacturing sites across the UK and Northern Ireland to understand production schedules,
A dedicated project structure brought together Manfreight project managers, the customer, warehouse management system specialists, IT teams, software developers, production planners and account managers. Following business process design,
The success of the project has also extended beyond one customer. The operating model developed through the partnership has since become a blueprint for onboarding and supporting other global food manufacturing customers across the Manfreight network. Taken together, the two awards demonstrate the two sides of Manfreight’s growing operation: the infrastructure, fleet and technology required to deliver a highly dependable cold chain, and the ability to work collaboratively with customers to solve complex supply chain challenges. For Manfreight, the double award success is therefore not simply recognition of what it delivers today - it is evidence of an ongoing investment strategy designed to build a smarter, more connected and more capable logistics operation for the future.

MONTGOMERY TRANSPORT GROUP - CONTINUALLY RAISING THE BAR! Montgomery Transport Group has underlined its position as one of the leading integrated logistics operators on the island of Ireland by retaining the National & International Haulier of the Year title at the 2026 Export & Freight Transport & Logistics Awards. Winning the prestigious award for a second consecutive year is a significant achievement - particularly in a sector where customer expectations, compliance requirements and supply chain challenges continue to evolve at pace. Since lifting the title in 2025, Montgomery Transport Group has continued to build on its success, welcoming major new customer relationships, investing in technology, expanding its warehousing capability and progressing its fleet replacement programme, while maintaining the high standards of safety, compliance and service that underpin the business. At the heart of the operation is a fleet of more than 200 trucks and over 600 trailers, operating across 12 operator licences. The fleet encompasses curtainsiders, box vans, flat trailers, rigids and longer semi-trailers, reflecting the breadth of freight and customer requirements handled by the group. Compliance is firmly embedded within their operation. Montgomery Transport
Group holds DVSA Earned Recognition status, requiring the continuous submission of vehicle maintenance records, driver-hours data and compliance information directly to the DVSA. Rather than viewing compliance as a periodic exercise, Montgomery Transport Group describes it as ‘an everyday discipline’, supported by structured preventive maintenance programmes, driver walkaround checks and proactive defect reporting. That approach has also been strengthened by a major technology investment during 2026, with the migration to Vigo, a new Transport Management System. The platform brings booking, driver-hours monitoring, vehicle scheduling, maintenance records and compliance reporting together in one real-time system, giving the compliance team live visibility of fleet and driver status. The company’s ongoing fleet replacement programme is similarly focused on maintaining a modern and capable operation without the disruption of wholesale fleet
renewal. At the same time, Montgomery Transport Group is assessing the potential of hydrogen, HVO and electric drivetrains as part of its longer-term fleet strategy. The group is taking a measured approach to alternative fuels, assessing where each technology can genuinely meet the demands of national and international haulage before committing to major investment. Montgomery Transport Group has partnered with Aerodyne to retrofit a significant proportion of its vehicles with automatically adjusting wind deflectors, which respond to trailer height to improve aerodynamic efficiency and fuel consumption. The sustainability focus extends into the warehouse operation, where dieselpowered materials handling equipment has been replaced by electric forklifts and energy-efficient equipment. But it is Montgomery Transport Group’s ability to combine transport with a wider range of logistics services that increasingly sets the business apart. Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the group provides transport services throughout the UK and Ireland, together with international freight capability across continental Europe. Its dual-site warehousing operation at Ballyearl in Northern Ireland and Preston Alpha in North West England adds further depth, with Preston Alpha achieving BRCGS AA accreditation at its first inspection. The business also provides in-house customs services, freight management covering land, sea, air and rail. This integrated approach has helped Montgomery Transport Group develop deeper relationships with customers, with the evolving partnership with Plastribution providing a strong example. What began in September 2025 as a

transport trial on a single Ireland lane has developed into a much broader logistics partnership encompassing warehousing, port collections, inbound container management and national distribution. Montgomery Transport Group’s proactive approach was demonstrated when it identified opportunities to improve Plastribution’s inbound supply chain before the customer had requested a change. When a Health & Safety concern around pallet bag integrity was identified, the issue was raised immediately, resulting in a packaging change that reduced damage rates. When Plastribution’s third-party warehouse provider in Liverpool gave short notice, Montgomery Transport Group stepped in
to absorb the incoming container volume, rework damaged stock and ensure outbound orders continued to be delivered on time. Today, the relationship includes 2,000 pallets of managed warehousing at Preston Alpha, inbound container management from UK ports and distribution across an expanded range of UK postcodes, with further strategic development planned. Behind the scenes, advanced telematics across the fleet provide real-time information on vehicle location, driver behaviour, fuel consumption and route performance. That data supports both the group’s compliance framework and its wider continuous improvement programme.
For Montgomery Transport Group, retaining the National & International Haulier of the Year award is therefore about much more than fleet size or geographic reach. It reflects a business continuing to invest in the systems, people, infrastructure and technology needed to provide customers with a genuinely integrated logistics solution – while maintaining the compliance, safety and service standards expected of a modern international haulier. With more than 200 trucks, 600-plus trailers and a growing portfolio of integrated services, Montgomery Transport Group is clearly intent on not simply retaining its position, but continuing to raise the bar.

Stena Line continues fleet renewal with order of 2 new hybrid ferries Stena Line is renewing its fleet and has placed an order for two new hybrid E-Flexer ferries, scheduled to enter service in 2030.
She continues: “With the new vessels, we are increasing our freight capacity, which we believe will be particularly valuable in connection with our upcoming move to a new port location in Arendal. The conditions there are excellent for developing our freight business, with opportunities for increased intermodality thanks to the rail connection.”
The two RoPax ferries will have capacity for 1,500 passengers and 2,750 lane metres of freight. Designed as day ferries, they are intended to operate on the Gothenburg–Frederikshavn route. The vessels will feature the latest hybrid propulsion technology, allowing them to operate on both conventional fuel and electricity. They will also be prepared for conversion to 100 percent electric operation once the necessary charging infrastructure is in place. “This is a historic investment for Stena Line, giving us the opportunity to take further steps towards the sustainable modernisation of our fleet. The two new ferries will strengthen our customer offering by taking the travel experience to a new level. At the same time, we are future-proofing our own CO2 reduction targets while preparing for the stricter environmental requirements ahead,” says Niclas Mårtensson, CEO of Stena Line.
The vessels currently operating on Stena Line’s Gothenburg– Frederikshavn route, Stena Danica and Stena Jutlandica, have served the route for many years. Stena Danica entered service on the route as early as 1984, while Stena Jutlandica followed in 1996.
Increased freight capacity The newly ordered vessels are scheduled to enter service between Gothenburg and Frederikshavn in 2030. However, as Stena Line

always strives to maintain flexibility and redundancy across its fleet, the vessels will also be capable of operating on other daytime routes within the company’s network. “Our existing vessels have been fantastic workhorses and have served us extremely well on our Denmark route for many years, but the next generation of E-Flexers will represent a major step forward for both our passengers and freight customers. They will enable us
The two new vessels will become the sixth and seventh E-Flexers in Stena Line’s fleet. The first entered service in 2019, and today three E-Flexers operate on the Irish Sea and two between Sweden and Poland. The vessels will be built at the China Merchants Industry Weihai Shipyard in China, which has so far built 15 E-Flexers.“This major investment demonstrates Stena Line’s long-term commitment, our determination to prioritise the sustainable transition and our confidence in the continued strong development of the Gothenburg–Frederikshavn route,” concludes Niclas Mårtensson.
Brittany Ferries announces new ‘Wexford’ ferry for Rosslare-Cherbourg route Brittany Ferries is delighted to announce the charter of a new RoPax ferry to serve the Cherbourg Rosslare route. Currently operating under the name Vizzavona, the re-named Wexford will replace Norbay, a freight ship currently on temporary charter to Brittany Ferries. mainland Europe are strengthened further by the introduction of the ship.
Wexford will be French flagged and crewed by French seafarers. She will begin operations in March 2027. Three weekly return crossings will made from Rosslare-Cherbourg as well as one Portsmouth-Cherbourg rotation. Tickets will be on sale by the end of next month. Wexford completes Brittany Ferries’ network of long-haul routes to and from Ireland, adding valuable passenger and freight capacity alongside frequent, direct sailings to northern Spain, Brittany and Normandy. Ireland will be served by a varied and versatile fleet of five ships: Salamanca, Wexford, Clipper, Armorique and Pont-Aven, offering up to seven weekly return sailings between Rosslare and Cherbourg, two weekly return sailings between Rosslare and Bilbao, and two weekly return sailings between Cork and Roscoff. Freight-oriented Norbay limited important passenger traffic due to cabin availability. Wexford, a RoPax vessel designed for holiday makers, will redress the balance and boost visitor numbers heading to Normandy

Commenting on the news, Brittany Ferries CEO Christophe Mathieu said, “The charter of our new ship Wexford is a positive step for the company and for the regions we serve in France and Ireland. We know there is a strong market for holiday traffic and this ship will better meet the demands of travellers on both sides of the Irish Sea. from Ireland in 2027. Its introduction reinforces the strategic importance of Ireland for the business and demonstrates Brittany Ferries’ commitment to Normandy in a celebratory year for the region. Wexford boasts a strong configuration of cabins for passengers. In total, she hosts 146 with space for around 130 cars on board. While freight is not the focus, it is not an afterthought either. Wexford’s 2,500 lane metres are more than enough to ensure trade links between
Brittany Ferries is the largest employer of French seafarers. Its commitment to the French flag remains a cornerstone of its business. So, the company is proud that it has once again fulfilled a promise on ships operating between Ireland and France. One year ago, directors promised that Norbay would be replaced as soon as was possible by a suitable RoPax ship and that it would operate under the French flag. With the signing of the charter for Wexford, it has met that commitment.
