The Art of Autumn Lawn Care: Tips for a Vibrant and Healthy Yard By Wyatt Peterson, Greenhouse Grower, Memphis Botanic Garden

A

s the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, nature signals the arrival of fall, heralding a season of transition for our outdoor spaces. Just as we prepare our homes for the colder months ahead, it is equally important to ready our lawns for the challenges of fall and winter. This process, often viewed as a chore, is a vital step in ensuring the vitality and resilience of our green sanctuaries. In this article, we will explore the key steps and practices involved in cleaning up the lawn for fall and winter, emphasizing the benefits it bestows upon both the environment and the homeowner. The first step in this seasonal endeavor is to address the accumulation of fallen leaves. While they may paint a picturesque scene, neglecting to remove them can lead to a host of issues. Thick layers of leaves can smother the grass, depriving it of essential sunlight and airflow. This can create an environment conducive to fungal growth and disease. Raking or using a leaf blower to collect and remove the leaves is a critical measure in preserving the health and vigor of the lawn.

resilient lawn. Applying a layer of compost or organic mulch serves as the final, nurturing touch in fall lawn cleanup. This nutritive blanket replenishes the soil's essential nutrients, fortifying the lawn for the challenges of winter and preparing it for robust growth in the coming spring. Additionally, mulch aids in regulating soil temperature, retaining moisture, and acting as a natural deterrent to weeds. The benefits of fall lawn cleanup extend far beyond the realm of aesthetics. A well-maintained lawn plays a pivotal role in environmental stewardship. It serves as a natural filter, trapping pollutants and preventing them from leaching into groundwater. Additionally, a thriving lawn contributes to improved air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, mitigating the effects of climate change. For the homeowner, the rewards of fall lawn cleanup are equally

Simultaneously, it is imperative to clear away any debris that may have accumulated over the preceding months. Twigs, branches, and other detritus can create uneven surfaces, inhibit growth, and provide hiding places for pests. By diligently removing these remnants, we not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the lawn but also foster an environment conducive to healthy growth.

Beyond physical debris, fall cleanup extends to plant care. This is an opportune time to prune shrubs, trim back perennials, and divide overcrowded plants. These actions not only encourage healthy growth but also prevent the spread of diseases that may have taken root during the warmer months. Additionally, removing spent annuals and weeds ensures that resources are directed toward the health and vitality of the remaining plants.

A crucial aspect of fall lawn cleanup is aerating the soil. This involves creating small perforations in the soil, allowing for better circulation of air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots. It also helps alleviate soil compaction, a common issue in high-traffic areas. By enabling the roots to penetrate deeper, we set the stage for a robust,

an inviting ambiance for residents and visitors alike. Moreover, a healthy lawn requires fewer inputs in the form of water, fertilizer, and pesticides, ultimately reducing the environmental footprint associated with lawn care. In conclusion, tending to our lawns in preparation for fall and winter dedication as caretakers of the environment. It is a meticulous process that encompasses the removal of fallen leaves and debris, strategic plant care, and soil aeration. The application of compost or mulch serves as the final, nurturing touch, fortifying the lawn for the challenges of winter and priming it for a vibrant resurgence in spring. As the seasons change, let us approach this task with purpose and and vitality of our own outdoor sanctuaries but also to the greater tapestry of the natural world. In these acts of care and stewardship, we forge a deeper connection with the cycles of nature, ensuring that our lawns thrive and flourish in the embrace of fall and winter. NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2023

50th Reunion Weekend Ridgeway High School Photos courtesy of Karin Long Reeser The first graduating class of Ridgeway High School held its 50th Reunion August 18-19. It had been 30 years since this group had been together and with more than 225 in attendance, the weekend was a huge success and one that many will never forget. Friday night was held at Memphis National Golf Club, and with many teachers in attendance the classmates took the opportunity to thank them personally for all they had done for them during their high school years. The following day, the group toured the school and reminisced about the experiences they had back in 1973. Saturday night was capped off with “Ridgeway Goes Italian” at the beautiful Lichterman Nature Center. The scrumptious dinner was catered by Coletta’s, and great dance music was provided by the Soul Shockers. It was a special weekend with old friendships rekindled and new friendships made!

THE EXCHANGE

THE LITTLE LIAR

BY JOHN GRISHAM

BY MITCH ALBOM

John Grisham, whose recent trip to Memphis was covered in a terrific write up in Time magazine, delivers high-flying international suspense in a stunning new legal thriller that marks the return of Mitch McDeere, the brilliant hero of The Firm. What became of Mitch and Abby McDeere after they exposed the crimes of Memphis law firm Bendini, Lambert & Locke and fled the country? The answer is in The Exchange, the riveting sequel to The Firm, the blockbuster thriller that launched the career of America’s favorite storyteller.

Beloved bestselling author Mitch Albom returns with a powerful novel that moves from a coastal Greek city during the Holocaust, to America, where the intertwined lives of three survivors are forever changed by the perils of deception and the grace of redemption. A moving parable that explores honesty, survival, revenge and devotion, The Little Liar is Mitch Albom at his very best. Narrated by the voice of Truth itself, it is a timeless story about the harm we inflict with our deceits, and the power of love to ultimately redeem us.

A Strong Voice for Nonprofits Statewide, Rooted in Memphis By April Carter, Director of Programs, TNN

D

id you know Memphis is now home to Tennessee’s first and only statewide nonprofit association? On October 1, 2023, Momentum Nonprofit Partners became Tennessee Nonprofit Network (TNN), Tennessee's first statewide nonprofit association, marking a significant milestone in the nonprofit sector's impact in the Volunteer State.

to 10% of the state's gross product. In light of these powerful statistics, TNN aims to build relationships with legislators on behalf of nonprofits, ensure that nonprofit needs are considered in legislative agendas and policies, and serve as experts at decisionmaking tables to represent the interests of the nonprofit sector effectively.

The organization's journey began in 1992 under the name "The Grant Information Center," initially focused on grant writing services. Over the years, it expanded its services, delving deeper into capacity building for nonprofits. In 2017, it assumed the name Momentum Nonprofit Partners and functioned as a regional nonprofit association, serving nonprofits in Memphis and the Mid-South.

TNN will remain rooted and headquartered in Memphis. The association will continue their commitment to the Memphis nonprofit community, providing valuable resources, advocacy, and support, ensuring that Memphis area nonprofits thrive. A division of their services will extend across the entire state to leverage national expertise, conduct research on issues facing nonprofits, and lobby in Nashville for policies to strengthen nonprofits across Tennessee. To further their mission, TNN plans to host a state nonprofit conference, moving to different parts of the state each year. They will also provide valuable resources, including templates, toolkits, online assessments, and statewide training. These resources will focus on essential aspects of nonprofit management, such as fundraising, board governance, succession planning, and leadership development. TNN will expand the event "Nonprofit Day on the Hill" to include organizations from across the state. The recent 2023 Nonprofit Day on the Hill demonstrated their capacity to mobilize support and drive awareness of nonprofit concerns in the state, setting the stage for this new endeavor. As a testament to their commitment to the nonprofit sector's growth and success, Tennessee Nonprofit Network will offer free membership across the state to established nonprofits for at least three years.

However, the landscape dramatically shifted when the COVID-19 pandemic underscored gaps within the state's nonprofit sector. It became evident that Tennessee was lacking a unified voice for its nonprofits, and that representation was long overdue. Tennessee boasts over 40,000 nonprofits, making it the sixth-largest industry in the state. Yet, it remained the only state without a statewide nonprofit association or a dedicated team of lobbyists advocating for nonprofit interests. The pandemic acted as a catalyst for (then) Momentum Nonprofit Partners, compelling them to mobilize and advocate for local nonprofits around PPE distribution and COVID-19 related legislation. These efforts highlighted the need for and importance of statewide public policy and advocacy work in Tennessee. Kevin Dean states "Nonprofits have been hesitant to engage in public policy and advocacy, but we have this great opportunity to support, educate, and equip Tennessee nonprofits so that their voices can be amplified to ensure that policy making decisions are informed by nonprofit perspectives.” The impact of nonprofits in Tennessee cannot be overstated, with a combined annual wage generation of $13.6 billion and contributing

With the transition to a statewide nonprofit association, TNN is poised to become a leading force in advocating for the Tennessee nonprofit sector, fostering growth, and enhancing its impact on communities throughout the state. The journey that began in 1992 as The Grant Information Center has now evolved into an exciting new era for Tennessee's nonprofit organizations.

Cooks and Collars Catholic Charities The second Annual Catholic Charities Cooks & Collars featured a divine evening at the FedEx Event Center at Shelby Farms September 28. Local celebrity chefs were paired with Catholic priests to create and prepare an appetizer, live, at the event, which was then judged by a panel. The night also featured live entertainment, a delicious catered dinner, and silent auction - all to raise money to benefit Emergency Services Programs at Catholic Charities. Last year, Catholic Charities served over 668,000 meals to those in need across West Tennessee. ccwtn.org

November/December

A r t

e v e n t s

Well, it is true that there are some holidays coming up. You might have picked up on that from displays in stores many weeks ahead of the actual dates or the increasing number of ads on television. And yes, you can take your pick of opportunities to see The Nutcracker in all kinds of variations (see below), but not everything is red and green wrapping paper or even pumpkin spice. Okay, there is no getting away from pumpkin spice. At any rate, I think I can safely say that the next couple of months offer a surprising variety of arts opportunities, both seasonal and timeless. So grab a pal and go and/or go and meet some old/new friends. Life is for living. P.S. Don’t forget – season tickets or a donation to an arts organization make a lovely stocking stuffer! -Ken Hall

Lucille’s Chili In a 4-quart Dutch oven, cook ground chuck, onion, green pepper, and garlic until meat is brown. Drain well. Add undrained tomatoes, drained kidney beans, tomato sauce, undrained tomatoes and green chiles, jalapeno pepper, chili powder, oregano, cumin, basil, salt, and pepper. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes. Reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 1 hour. Serve with additional chopped onion, sour cream, and cheddar cheese for topping. Makes 8 main-dish servings. Ten Cents a Bowl There was a spot on “old” Beale Street run by Sunbeam Mitchell. Here all the musicians around, including the notable B.B. King, could eat cheap and get a big bowl of the best chili in town. B.B. remembers: “If you had 15 cents at that time, you could eat well: a nickel’s worth of crackers and a dime’s worth of chili!” “Lucille’s Chili,” named for B.B.’s famed guitar, is patterned after this memorable feast. 72

The Best Tenderloin Ever Everyone who eats this says so! For marinade, combine port wine, soy sauce, olive oil, pepper, garlic, bay leaf, and hot pepper sauce. Place tenderloin in a plastic bag into a shallow dish. Pour marinade over tenderloin. Close bag. Marinate in the refrigerator overnight, turning 1 or 2 times to distribute marinade. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Drain tenderloin. Wrap bacon slices around tenderloin, securing with toothpicks. Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the tenderloin. Place on a rack in a shallow roasting pan, tucking the thin end under to make it is as thick as the rest of the meat. Roast for 25 to 35 minutes for rare (140). Makes 16 to 20 servings.

Youth Villages Holiday Heroes By Lesley Harris Colvett Photos courtesy of Youth Villages

Anyone can be a Holiday Hero and be the “reason for the season.” For more than 20 years, Youth Villages’ Holiday Heroes program has spread joy by providing cheer and gifts during the holidays to children, youth and families in the nonprofit’s care. Fifteen-year-old Jesse has enjoyed first-hand the heartwarming experience of receiving from a Holiday Hero, and Jesse has now become a Holiday Hero himself! Jesse was a residential youth at one of Youth Villages’ campuses, and in 2020, the Mullins family in Memphis fostered and adopted him. Linzie and Ray Mullins were drawn to the idea of fostering and adopting in late 2019, after being married for 10 years. “My husband and I are both teachers in public schools, and we see the need every day. In our faith, we felt the pull and the call from God to open our home to children that would not be biologically ours,” Linzie said. It was almost divine intervention how the Mullins became Jesse’s parents. Linzie had seen Jesse’s profile online and showed her husband, strongly feeling like he could be “the one.” Then about six months later, Linzie’s good friend who taught at Youth Villages mentioned to her about one of her students who was ready for a home. Her friend thought he would be a good fit for them. Lo and behold, it was the same boy Linzie had seen online, Jesse! Just like 74

that it all fell into place for the Mullins to go forward with fostering and adopting Jesse. The adoption process began in March 2020, during the onset of the Covid pandemic. Jesse moved in with the Mullins August 2020, and he was officially adopted by Linzie and Ray November 2021. The Mullins family quickly grew as five months later Bentley, another Youth Villages child resident, moved in and was adopted six months after that. “When Jesse moved in with us, he brought with him a lot of toys and I was like, ‘Jesse, where are all these toys from?’” Linzie recalls. “He had race cars, several nice art sets, and basketballs. Jesse said they were from Holiday Heroes, and that every Christmas he was living at a Youth Villages campus, a Holiday Hero would sponsor a child. The kids truly felt the joy and cheer of the holiday season when they would get to open the presents that were bought specifically for them by a Holiday Hero,” Linzie says. “Holiday Heroes brought happiness and joy to us at Youth Villages during the holidays. We would go to the gym where there were a lot of decorations, food, fake snow on the floor and Santa. And we would then get a big bag of presents,” Jesse said.

The joyful and giving spirit continues for Jesse as he and the Mullins are Holiday Heroes. Since being adopted, Jesse has continued the tradition, sponsoring one or two children as a Holiday Hero. “Christmas is hard for kids in foster care and adoption because it brings up past trauma and holes in your heart that are opened up a little bit during the holidays. Having someone else do the shopping for you and make the child feel special is so wonderful and gives relief for the foster families. We are really thankful for being recipients, but also to be able to give in the Holiday Heroes program.” Linzie said. Linzie serves as a mentor for foster parents at Youth Villages and stays in contact with many foster parents to offer support and encouragement for potential families. Linzie says all you need is room and love, and the agency will match you with a good fit. Anyone can become a Holiday Hero and give joy to the kids at Youth Villages! Donations to the campaign can be made at any time throughout the year; however, the primary part of the campaign is November and December.

Here is how you can help: • Donate at: www.youthvillages.org/holidayheroes • Supporters can either choose to buy gifts for a child or a family (all siblings). • $150 to cover the wishes of one child. • Supporters can either shop for the child, youth or family or make donations and have Youth Villages shop for the gifts. Fashion 4Ward Denim: A Fashion Classic By T. Rendy

L

et’s talk about denim, the twilled cotton fabric long used to make workwear. It’s actually called “Genoa fustian.”

Hawthorn, a leading UK clothing manufacturer, believes denim was created in Nimes, France, in the 17th century. The process used a twill weave with the weft passing under the warp threads. Weavers dyed the warp threads blue and left the other threads natural white resulting in the blue we know today. It was called, “Serge de Nimes” meaning “Twill of Nimes.” The Italians improved the process and named this fabric “jeans” after the city of Genoa, Italy. Ooh lala! I feel so European now knowing where the fabric of my jeans was born! In the 1800s Levi Strauss invented the world’s first reinforced jeans with rivets! Now, a lesson on when to the “Twill of Nimes.'' Everywhere you look denim is a fashion statement. Wearing it can be a bit complex. Almost every piece of clothing is being made from denim. It’s difficult to decide how to wear it. According to the Wall Street Journal there is a way to wear denim-on-denim, and many Hollywood celebrities are pulling off the look, starting decades ago with Bing Crosby. Believe it or not, his outfit was shamed in 1951 when Bing entered a Vancouver hotel dressed in all denim. He was refused entry because of his attire! Upon learning this news, Levi’s made Bing a tuxedo completely of denim and named it the Canadian tuxedo. If you want to wear the Canadian tuxedo look, always opt for 100% cotton

denim jeans. Synthetic jeans can pucker and not look authentic. It’s also good to match dyes when combining pieces if possible. Matching pieces can be great, especially because of the monochromatic trends happening now. New York stylist Micaela Erlanger feels that the real key to a successful denim look is introducing other textures with accessories. “The look has a certain confidence that can almost take you anywhere,” said Erlanger. Brett Haynie, Oklahoma native and co-owner of the historic Norumbega Inn in Camden, Maine, says to be careful that your look doesn’t go “cartoonishly western.” He said that he adds “polish with classic accouterments such as Aime’ Leon Dore penny loafers and a Cartier Tank Watch.” Memphis native, former Halston model, and style guru Babbie Lovett said she once heard Yves Saint Laurent say if he would have designed blue jeans he would never have had to design anything else! Vogue editor Anna Wintour says “jeans are great. I love jeans.” However, she points out there are a few places when jeans are not “the most respectful choice.” Places she noted were formal occasions such as visiting the White House or Buckingham Palace. She also says, “You should definitely not wear jeans when you are meeting your future inlaws for the first time.” Denim allows you to express yourself and create your own look! Sincerely, T. Rendy
