The Orpheum Soiree Photography by Creation Studios The Orpheum Soiree on November 17 was a sold-out, “wicked” good time! This year’s party was a Wicked themed event to celebrate the iconic show’s 20th anniversary and run at the Orpheum April 3-21, 2024. Guests enjoyed mingling throughout the theater, from Glinda’s Bubble Ballroom with bubbly libations to the Emerald City After Hours party. First Dibs Party Arrow Creative Photography by Ken Hall Arrow Creative held an opening night shopping celebration which was both a fun event and an homage to the much beloved Memphis College of Art Holiday Bazaar. Works of art of all kinds were on display and for sale throughout the common areas as well as in the artists’ studio spaces. Arrow Creative on Philadelphia in Midtown is a tremendous resource for artists, aspiring artists of all ages, and shoppers. There are classes throughout the year for adults and summer camps for children. Recently, Arrow acquired equipment from the old MCA including potter’s wheels, printmaking machinery, and more to continue offering arts learning opportunities. The complex houses several artist’s studios and a retail area. Happy new year and then some. I think the reason that this season has so many holidays and celebrations – New Year’s Day, MLK Day, Golden Globe Awards, Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, Presidents Day, my birthday, Super Bowl week – is to counteract the overall dark, cold, and gloom that normally accompanies January and February. Our friends in the arts community are equally concerned about your well being and have scheduled an array of theatrical productions, art exhibits, musical performances, and more with you in mind. You have to get out of the house to go to work and shop for the groceries, which the delivery guy got wrong anyway, so why not make the effort to brave the elements for enjoyment as well? Think about the offerings in December and July – lots of Nutcrackers and lots of patriotic music – and look how diverse, different, and dare I say, interesting are the January and February presentations. You really ought to go check out some of these things. Maybe I’ll see you there. -Ken Hall

T
he Balcony Project is an immersive time capsule, telling the story of segregation. Standing in the midst of history is an experience like none other. It gives context to a period that books, photographs, or films do not. The Balcony Project at the Orpheum Theatre is an intimate history lesson that allows visitors to step back in time and experience a dark period in our nation’s history. During the Jim Crow era, the Orpheum, like many theaters across America, had "separate accommodations" for Blacks-only. The nondescript entrance on Beale Street opened to a small lobby with a box office and a staircase to the upper balcony, also for Blacks-only. Until opening as The Balcony Project, the space had been used for storage and remained relatively untouched until now. Brett Batterson, President of the Orpheum Theatre Group, recognized the significance of the space and the opportunity to tell the story. “In 2016 when I came to the Orpheum and heard that the colored entrance still existed, I was intrigued. After Jim Crow, most theaters reclaimed the space to use for other things, and for whatever reason the Orpheum did not,” he said. “I knew this could be an important project to use for our education component.” Initially, he conceived The Balcony Project would be primarily for children because the differences are so striking, but once the project got underway he realized it is an opportunity for everyone to learn.

Dr. Charles McKinney, a respected Civil Rights Movement historian and Associate Professor of History and Director of Africana Studies at Rhodes College, curated the panels used in the exhibition that explain that period in our history. In addition to the panels, a documentary video produced by filmmaker Daven Baptiste shares stories from Black patrons, teenagers at the time, who remember visiting the Orpheum and using the Blacks-only entrance. “The Orpheum Theatre Group has used performing arts to educate for 95 years and is uniquely positioned to tell this story,” said Dr. McKinney. “The Balcony Project can make significant contributions to historical recognition and understanding of the Jim Crow era, underscoring the Orpheum’s commitment to continuous learning.” The Balcony Project is free to visit on Saturdays from 10am-noon and Mondays from 2-4pm. It is included on regularly scheduled tours and may be scheduled for group tours. orpheum-memphis.com
The Blacks-only lobby is a vast contrast to the opulence of the Orpheum’s lobby used today. “The paint used in the lobby is the same paint used in the janitorial closet in the basement backstage. That is how low the thought was in 1928,” Brett said. The separate entrance and lobby were designed was designed in the original architecture when the Orpheum opened in 1928, and it was closed in 1963 when the Orpheum was a Malco movie theater. h, at last, January. For many of us, this is a time to stop to take a breath after a hectic holiday season, stretch and relax…then jump to the task of putting our homes back in order. This might involve recovering from the hustle and bustle of holiday parties and gift exchanging and taking down the holiday decorations. Whether you’ve been celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali, or another holiday event, chances are that you’ve had some seasonal decor brightening up your home recently. And while there’s no official deadline for having it all “put back right,” this is when most of us tackle it. And if you’re anything like me, once I put away my inside holiday decor, my home starts to look a bit…lacking. Empty. Like a plate missing a garnish. That corner that was housing a fluffy, gleaming, sparkling Christmas tree, now looks barren and lifeless. The mantel that held some garland and bows and twinkly lights now looks awfully austere. Once these fun decorations are put away, our homes can look a little bare, as if they are missing something. What’s one to do in these cases? Why, go houseplant shopping, of course! It’s cold and inhospitable outside, most of the trees we can see from our windows have dropped their leaves, and by golly, it’s a perfect time to bring in some living, growing plants to inject some

color, softness, and LIFE into our homes. Fortunately, many garden centers that have indoor spaces have just stocked up on lots of fresh houseplants for you to choose from. So, where does one begin? Let’s talk about some options for BIG plants, the tropical houseplants that can fill in an empty corner with some presence and size. There are several varieties of tropical fig trees, also known as Ficus trees, that can fill this role nicely. Fiddle-leaf fig, Ficus lyrata, has been all the rage for the past several years. It’s still an excellent choice, with large stiffly-rippled leaves, loosely fiddle-shaped, that can reach 1012” long and 8” wide. You’ve likely seen these big-leafed beauties gracing homes in TV decorating shows and high-end furniture ads. Fiddle-leaf figs are often sold as several stems together in a pot, giving a full bushy appearance, or as a single-stemmed tree with a bare trunk and large leafy foliage at the midpoint and on up. In my experience, single-stemmed trees are a better choice for homes, as it’s easier for each leaf to get the bright light it needs to flourish. Fiddle-leaf figs may grow to 6-8’ indoors. Though some people feel that this plant is temperamental, its needs are quite simple: bright filtered light (directly next to a north or eastfacing window is great, or a few feet away from a bright south or

a week. A “deep” watering means watering it until water comes out of the drainage holes at the bottom. Check it after an hour or so, and if the water hasn’t been soaked up by the plant, pour it out, so the plant

you can learn to pour in just the right amount of water each time. Another classic ficus tree that makes a beautiful houseplant is the Rubber Tree, Ficus elastica. This plant has large, glossy, oval leaves that are thick and feel like a thick plastic. Some say the “rubber” of its common name refers to the rubbery feel of the leaves, but it is more likely referencing the thick, milky white sap that oozes out of the branches when cut, or when a leaf is snapped off. This sticky sap really was harvested and used to produce rubber in the early 1900s, though a different tree species is used today. The fluid can be irritating to human skin, so should be washed off right away if you come in contact with it. The original rubber tree leaf is a deep glossy green, but several beautiful cultivars have become available with wildly colored foliage. ‘Burgundy’ has, you guessed it, a deep burgundy hue to the upper leaf sides; ‘Tineke’ is beautifully marked with white and two shades of green; and ‘Ruby Tineke’ has shades of pink, burgundy, and deep green. Rubber trees may eventually grow to 8’ or more indoors. Care is similar to the fiddle-leaf fig. There are two newer Ficus introductions to the houseplant world

that are just starting to become more widely available. The Yellow Gem Fig, Ficus altissima ‘Yellow Gem’, has oval leaves like the Rubber Tree, but they are a bit thinner and “leafier” in feel and are beautifully colored in swathes of yellow and green. These sunny leaves will really brighten up a room! The Audrey Fig, Ficus benghalensis ‘Audrey’, has more petite oval leaves in a rich deep green with striking white veins. Both Yellow Gem and Audrey Figs can reach 6-10’ indoors. Care is

For any of these attractive tropical fig trees, how you start out with them is up to you: you may purchase a large specimen that is already 3’, 5’, even 7’, or more, or start with a much smaller plant, place it on a plant stand or a counter for now, and watch it grow into a stately tree over several years. This is a great time to bring a new houseplant into your life and home!

he 2024 bride is in love with her groom and the eco-friendly minimalistic wedding. Blush Bridal of Ohio says that “the 2024 bride will be embracing a whole new level of creativity and individuality,” and every detail will be eco-conscience. The eco-bride will be wearing a wedding dress with recycled fabric, selecting locally sourced flowers, serving plant-based menus, and celebrating at carbon neutral venues. Vogue says don’t always expect to see brides dressed in white. Bold colors were on bridal runways this season, along with pastels and whimsy. For brides who don’t wear dresses, designers pair pants with a bustier and full skirt. Some are spending less money using less fabric with a mini wedding dress! Long veils are particularly chic, and the top wedding veils this year feature pearls, pleats, florals or lace. Brittany Bergeron, Operations Coordinator at the Bridal Finery in Winter Park, Florida, was most excited about colored veils. According to Bergeron, it is a fantastic way to incorporate a pop of color into a bridal look. Regarding bridesmaid dresses, there seem to be fewer rules. Just as brides break the rules, their bridesmaids are too by mixing fabrics, hemlines, and colors. Along with bridal fashions that are breaking the rules, venues will also
be non-traditional in 2024, according to Jason Kaczorowski of Jason Kaczorowski Photography. He indicated that “minimonies” will remain a staple and couples will focus on meaningful connections with special guests. Another photographer, Kari Bjorn, predicts documentary-style photography will be big trend this year, and 35mm film photography is also coming on strong. Disposable cameras are making a comeback too. Bjorn feels hashtags, the garter toss, and bridesmaids dressing alike are things of the past. StyleCaster Media Company commented that weddings are like individual Met Galas. Whether you are attending, participating, or just plain watching, it’s fun to have an opinion. They advise brides to get familiar with trends and then decide which direction to go. Trends are meant to excite and inspire, not dictate. And one more thing if you’re planning a wedding in 2024: according to the Chinese zodiac, this is the luckiest year to get married because when you add the individual numbers together (2+0+2+4), the sum is eight. This number symbolizes infinite love between husband and wife. Plus, this is a leap year – meaning prosperity for couples getting married! Wanna get married? Then 2024 is the year for you! Memphis Child Advocacy Center Gala Photography by Ken Hall The nonprofit Memphis Child Advocacy Center works on behalf of children who have been abused and neglected. The annual gala fundraiser is a dinner with a twist: well-known volunteer servers, some celebrities and all supporters, put on an apron to wait tables raising tip money with their excellent service. It is great fun to see lawyers, bankers, television reporters, and more in a different role. These star servers had a meal before the event, which included a briefing from Paradox Catering’s Jimmy Gentry and Kellie Walker about what was being served and how to serve it. With the current trend toward more casual dining, they have introduced the Campagna pattern in melamine, and in doing so they are introducing a new generation to Vietri. “With the expansion, we will have even more to offer for preparing and presenting the perfect meal,” Brooks said. “Since we don’t have a Williams-Sonoma or Sur La Table in town anymore, we are filling that void. A beautiful formal table, complete with porcelain china, crystal stemware and silver place settings, or a more casual table with handmade pottery dinnerware and mouth-blown stemware, is important because friends and family gather around the table together. This can make for a special memory and takes the guesswork out of the selection process. Creating a budget is a personal process, but how to stay on target is where we excel! There’s more than just the 4 C’s of diamonds to consider - it’s like working a Rubic’s cube, and we know the right combination of quality characteristics to unlock value and savings that also satisfy the couple’s preferences. Try on as many options as possible! When a bride tries on what they originally thought of as their “perfect ring,” they often change their mind about the style once they have the opportunity to try other styles. We try to simplify as much as possible, but we do want them to know their options. Our next step would be to figure out which shape they are thinking. We will bring one of each shape stone out for them to try on. The stones always look different on your hand. One might come in thinking round and end up loving the oval instead. So we definitely suggest trying all your options. Next, the step is designing your setting, (semi-mount). Each mounting has a unique trait to it. We love to redesign and or design a custom ring. Families that pass on diamonds that are sentimental, we will use those to make it the perfect engagement ring that fits her personality and create a timeless piece of jewelry. It's amazing how many designs we can do, using other family diamonds or stones. We want to make sure you have the ring of your dreams. We have a style for everyone. Some prefer the traditional look with a band that matches the ring. The customer’s personality and style really shines through with their wedding band choice. We think of the usual white gold vs. yellow gold or diamonds vs. plain; but there are other things to consider such as how the ring fits next to the engagement ring. Should the band be curved or straight, wide or thin, engraved or polished? All of these questions are best answered by trying the different options on and seeing which looks best.” P.G. “One of the most important things to remember is you want the

What are some trends in engagement rings and wedding bands? “The halo trend is still popular, where diamonds surround the center stone. It makes the whole ring flow together and makes it more flashy.” P.H. “James Gattas Jewelers stays at the forefront of styles and designs! We pay attention to national trends, but realize the Mid-South has its own local ‘flavor.’ Engagement rings are trending to larger center diamonds thanks to the affordability of Lab Grown diamonds. We are seeing simpler styles than before with many 3-stone rings and simple solitaires with hidden halos being top choices. Engagement rings incorporating baguette shaped accent diamonds are making a comeback and asymmetrical designed rings are having a moment as well. Oval and Emerald shaped diamonds are at the forefront of preferred center stone shapes, but round shaped diamonds still hold the crown for most sought after. Trends toward yellow gold are strong in fashion jewelry while engagement rings are split 50/50 between white gold vs. yellow gold.” P.G. “The 3-stone engagement ring is a huge trend currently. The hidden halo mounting is another very popular one. We are designing a few 3-stone rings with the side stones being gemstone. The sapphire is a very popular gemstone to use.” H.W.

“We recommend just warm water and ammonia (Mr. Clean), soak overnight and use an old toothbrush. You can also come in and get it steam cleaned at no charge.” P.H. “We advise customers to bring their jewelry in for free inspections and cleaning at least every six months, but more frequently isn’t a bad idea. Regular inspections allow us to identify potential issues before they grow to costly repairs. Additionally, we strongly suggest that jewelry (especially engagement rings) be removed before exercising or other related activities. Also, avoid wearing jewelry in swimming pools or hot tubs as the chlorine in the water can degrade the precious alloys in the jewelry. The same goes for cleaning with caustic solutions like bleach - use gloves and remove jewelry. Insurance on your valuables is as equally important as being mindful of how you treat your jewelry.” P.G. “Our suggestion if you can’t get into a jewelry store for them to clean with their machines is that at home you can use Dawn liquid dish soap with warm water and let it soak. Then just rinse and you are ready to go. We are always happy to clean your jewelry and get it like 'brand new' anytime you would like to come by.” H.W.
What changes in engagement rings and wedding bands have you seen lately? “The biggest recent charge is the introduction of Lab Grown diamonds vs. natural diamonds. Wedding bands have changed lately with the stackable look of different styles of bands stacked together.” P.H. “One of the big changes or new design is the 2-stone engagement ring. The 2-stone ring sometimes is paired with a diamond and a gemstone. We have seen some of the trends come full circle. The guards have been coming to stone recently. Another style is called a 'cuff band', which is one of our personal favorites.” H.W.

While the location may migrate slightly, the consistent force is great music and a fun crowd. For Party Off the Plaza ’23 local favorites The MDs opened for headliner the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio. The bands rocked the theater, VIPs enjoyed special bites and beverages in a tent in the theater courtyard, and funds were raised to help treat thousands of people in desperate need of healthcare. Different shops had hors d'oeuvres from the restaurants, as well as beverages. Bog & Barley hosted a wine bar in the courtyard adjacent to the live music. Many stores donated a percentage of their sales from 5-8pm to Church Health. Especially exciting was the unveiling of the painting by Dr. Carol Caughey, which serves as the artwork for the 2023 Christmas card that is now available for sale.

4Memphis Recipes: Woman's Exchange Tea Room
Best Ever Chess Pie 3 eggs, beaten 1 ½ cups sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 6 tablespoons buttermilk ¾ stick butter, melted 1 unbaked pie shell Mix first 5 ingredients together, pour into pie shell. Bake in 350° oven, for 30 minutes, then 10 minutes at 300° or until pie is set. Serves 6 to 8. This is easy to double or triple, and it freezes well.
Vegetable Beef Soup 1 ½ pounds chuck roast 10 oz. mixed frozen vegetables 3, 14 oz. cans tomatoes 8 oz. frozen cut okra 3 small onions, chopped ⅛ pound broken spaghetti (opt.) 4 stalks celery, chopped 3 sprigs parsley, chopped 1 ½ teaspoon oregano Salt and pepper, to taste Cook roast in covered 8-10 quart stock pot with 8 cups of water for 1 hour. Add tomatoes, onions, celery, and parsley. Cook 30 minutes covered. Add mixed frozen vegetables, okra, broken spaghetti, salt, pepper, and oregano. Cook until all the vegetables are done. Remove meat, chop, and return to soup. Serve with parmesan cheese. Serves 16. Note: ⅓ cup barley is an excellent substitute for the spaghetti. Also, 2 or 3 beef bouillon cubes will give a beefier flavor, if needed. The thickness of the soup can be varied by the amount of water used and the length of the cooking time. It is always better the second day!

I
t is fitting that the two courses founded by George W Bryan, Sr., would receive this award as we close out 2023. The Bryan family suffered the loss of George on January 6, 2023, and on November 16, 2023, Old Waverly and Mossy Oak Golf Clubs were awarded the Distinguished Golf Destination Designation. The Distinguished Golf Destination Designation has been bestowed only on 160 courses worldwide. It was George’s vision to give Mississippi a world class golf experience. George was a West Point, Mississippi, native and son of the Bryan Foods founder, John H. Bryan Sr. Bryan Foods was purchased by Sara Lee in 1968, and George worked for the company in various roles; he was named President of Bryan Foods in 1974 and Senior Vice President of Sara Lee in 1983. George moved Sara Lee’s meat division to Memphis making Memphis his home for 15 years as he raised his four children with his wife Marcia, ultimately serving as Chief Executive Office of Sara Lee Foods until his retirement in 2000. He spent the next 22 years living in his hometown of West Point, continuing the development of Old Waverly and Mossy Oak. It is during his time in Memphis that he and Marcia fulfilled his dream of giving something back to Mississippi, by founding the first of these two courses, Old Waverly, which no one would have viewed as possible, but 11 years later would be chosen to host the 1999 U.S Women’s Golf Open. The event was covered by NBC and would show what Mississippi offers the world of golf. The second course, Mossy Oak, would open in 2016 and became home to the Mississippi State Golf Team. Mossy Oak was recognized two years later as one of Golfweek’s Top 100 modern golf courses. The presence of these two world-class courses in the life of students at Mississippi State University will have an impact on golfers and golf courses worldwide for generations to come. Mississippi State University’s Turf Management students care for courses across the country that its golfers play. All will have been marked by the energy, vision and passion of the late George Bryan. George’s commitment to the next generation can be seen in the Junior Golf Program, which he created in 2008. His passion for golf started as a young man growing up playing golf, and he knew that if you were ever going to be at the top of your game you needed to start young. Not only did he pass that love on to his son Wilkes Bryan but also to his grandsons, George Bryan III and Wells Williams. George believed that if Waverly was going to fulfill its golf destiny, Old Waverly would need to be a place where golfers could develop early so they could achieve all the abilities God had given them. George knew that most young golfers would never end up competing in the PGA, but that was not his goal. The goal was the discipline of mastering the game against the only competition that ultimately matters in golf, oneself. The Junior Golf Program has created a “bubble” of success, giving many of them opportunities to play renowned collegiate programs: Hunter AtkinsSouthern Mississippi; Jacob Blanton-Ole Miss; Emerson Blair-Ole Miss; Jackson Cook-Mississippi State; Morgan Dabbs-Blue Mountain College; Claire Henson-Vanderbilt; Cohen Trolio-LSU; Collins Trolio-Ole Miss; Wells Williams-Vanderbilt. The Distinguished Golf Destination Designations is the hallmark of excellence for a golf course; the merit-based award recognizes golf courses that exceed expectations in the quality of service, facilities, governance, and most importantly the teamwork of the staff and management. Developed by industry leaders, BoardRoom magazine and Forbes Travel Guide, the Distinguished Golf Destinations award is the most prestigious and valuable designation a resort, semi-private, daily fee or public golf course can achieve. Pat Fusco serenaded guests on the keys as they entered, followed later by performances from Memphis artists The Sensational Barnes Brothers and Dale Watson. Guests enjoyed smoked old fashioned’s in the Blue Note Bourbon Room, speciality martini’s at the Tito’s Tini Bar, Dinstuhl’s Delights upstairs in the Sugar Plum Fairy room, 2024 meditations and intention setting with Tori Anito in the candlelit Speakeasy, and ballroom dancing with professional instructor Douglas Banks in the Racquet “Ballroom.” Noshings were provided by Mindy Son, Maximo’s on Broad, The Mad Grocer and Erling Jensen. Flip My Life Premiere Photography by Michael Morrison Marybeth Conley has been a longtime Memphis TV personality, and since retiring she has followed her heart. She reconnected with a childhood friend Rick Woodall, fell in love, married, and together they are creating new beginnings for themselves and for others. Their mission is to renovate homes, rebuild lives, and restore hope for inmates who have been released from prison, and they are sharing this process in a new web series entitled “Flip My Life.” The series was launched at an event at the Malco Paradiso, and the theater was filled with dignitaries from the criminal justice system to families impacted by their project to supporters and well-wishers. Rick is a building contractor, and combined with Marybeth’s experience in television, the series gives viewers renovation ideas and stories of transition through the 10-episodes. In addition to being a contractor, Rick is also a former prison inmate, so he genuinely understands the importance of a new start. The inspiring series is available at flipmylifetv.com. Holidays at Social: A Shop for Gracious Living It was a very social season at Social that began with the annual Open House that really is a party. The events continued through the holidays with a book signing of Classical Shindig Ameteur Artistry: From the Simple to the Sublime by Michael Harold and Quinn Peeper. The festivities continued with a PJ Party and early-morning shopping hours and special pop-up shops. The Socialites know how to make the season bright!
St. George’s Independent School Art Show Photography by McKendree Walker The 20th Annual Art Show was held November 10-11 at St. George’s Collierville Campus, featuring a festive kick-off party with music, delicious food by Erling Jensen, student artwork up for auction, plus three pieces by the late Mark Ramirez, noted 4Memphis photographer, which were auctioned off at the end of the evening! More than 40 regional artists were on hand to help guests find gifts for the holidays as well as the perfect painting for their homes. There was something for everyone - a variety of mediums and a wide range of price points, and all proceeds go to the St. George's Fine Arts Department.
