hether or not the leaves start turning colors, we know it is Fall in Memphis when opera singers randomly show up everywhere, when the Overton Park Shell keeps you entertained weekly, and when there are so many art shows and theater openings you almost couldn’t attend them all (but you can if you really, really try!). Absolutely do not miss the Morgan Freeman Symphonic Blues Experience, which has been touring the US for several months and is finally coming to Memphis. And there will be few things more exciting for Midtowners (and everyone else) than the opening of the Metal Museum in the old Memphis College of Art building. It is gorgeous, and you will want to go there often. We are blessed with so many opportunities - please go and support. -Ken Hall

Photography by Ken Hall Who’s that and whose is that? These often-heard phrases at the annual Incognito Art Auction refer to the artists in disguise and the unsigned paintings being sold. Perhaps the most fun of the many art events around town, there is both beauty and guesswork on the walls. This year, 100 area artists were given a 12x12 canvas to create something and sign it on the back. The buyers picked artworks by what they saw, a sort of art meritocracy, only learning who the artists were at the end of the evening. membg.org

The evening included free admission to the Museum, live music, hands-on activities, metalsmithing demos, and craft cocktails on the beautiful riverside bluff grounds. Students from 56 participating schools across Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri gathered on the Orpheum stage to celebrate achievements in musical theatre. The Orpheum High School Musical Theatre Awards is the only regional program in the country that encompasses four states. Award recipients for Lead Actor and Lead Actress – Hayden Hooper (Collierville High School) and Maggie Dinstuhl (Collierville High School) represented Memphis at The National High School Musical Theatre Awards (The Jimmy Awards) in New York City on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre. They also provide environmental benefits and can make a landscape more functional.

If you are considering adding trees or shrubs to your property, fall is one of the best times to get started. Cooler temperatures and favorable soil conditions allow plants to focus on establishing their roots before the heat of summer arrives.
Trees and Shrubs Add Beauty and Structure
Trees and shrubs can add visual interest to a lawn that turfgrass alone cannot provide. Trees add height and create focal points, while shrubs add layers of texture, color, and form. Flowering shrubs can bring seasonal color, while evergreen varieties provide structure and greenery throughout the year. Plants can also help define different areas of a property. A row of shrubs can create a natural border along a walkway or property line, while a strategically placed tree can frame a patio or provide a focal point. Choosing plants that are well suited to the location can create attractive planting areas that require less routine maintenance than turf. The key is choosing the right plant for the right place. Consider sunlight, soil, moisture, mature plant size, and maintenance needs before planting.

Fall offers several advantages for planting trees and shrubs. Cooler air temperatures place less stress on newly planted plants, while the soil can remain warm enough to encourage root growth. With expert horticulturists and a plant selection tailored to the Mid-South, the sale offers a convenient opportunity to find plants suited to the local climate and learn how to care for them. When planting, avoid placing trees or shrubs too deeply. The root flare of a tree should remain visible above the soil. After planting, water thoroughly and continue watering as needed while the roots become established. A layer of mulch around the root zone can help conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures. Keep mulch several inches away from the trunk or stems to avoid problems such as rot.
Plant for the Future Trees and shrubs are an investment in the future of your landscape. They add beauty and structure, provide shade, support wildlife, and can help reduce the amount of lawn that requires regular maintenance. N
estled in a mountain valley northwest of Florence and southwest of Bologna, Porretta Terme had been famous for centuries for its ancient hot springs, fed by thermal waters flowing beneath the Apennine Mountains.
The stage was set. Memphis Mayor Paul Young and Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris embraced the idea, as did Porretta Mayor Giuseppe Nanni and Bologna Mayor Matteo Lepore. In 2025, the Sisterhood was announced!
Then, in 1988, 40-year-old advertising executive Graziano Uliani — a soul music fan since his teens — gave his hometown a new identity by founding the Porretta Soul Festival. Over the years, Memphis legends including Isaac Hayes, David Porter, Rufus Thomas, and Carla Thomas answered his call.
By July’s 2026 Porretta Soul Festival, Memphians were arriving in force. Among them were Barry Lichterman, Alex Greene, Dr. Susan Murrmann, Bob Trenchard, and Tennessee UNICO President Dr. Crisann SchiroGeist with her daughter Jeni DiPrizio. Memphis filmmaker Princeton James traveled to Porretta with Sitler to meet with Italian filmmaking prospects. Sitler was even named an honorary citizen of Porretta!
The town of barely 5,000 residents embraced its newfound connection to Memphis soul music. Some 15 murals depicting Soul stars appeared on ancient walls, and a street was even named for soul singer Otis Redding! In 2024, longtime friends Uliani and Memphis & Shelby County Film Commissioner Linn Sitler hatched another idea: to make Porretta Terme and Bologna official Sister Cities of Memphis and Shelby County. 48

Bake Brie for 5 to 10 minutes at 350 degrees until soft but not oozing. Top with a heavy dollop of pumpkin butter and sprinkle with cinnamon. Set aside. Place Goat cheese on a plate. In a food processor, combine about 1/4 cup of the candied nuts with about 1/2 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice until it turns to a dusty crumble. Pour over the goat cheese and roll cheese in the nuts until completely covered. Set aside. Place smoked Gouda on a plate, top with pumpkin seeds, and drizzle with maple syrup. Set aside. In a bowl, stir together the Mascarpone, pumpkin purée, maple syrup, and pumpkin pie spice. Spoon into a small white, brown, or copper bowl and sprinkle with pumpkin pie spice. Put ingredients such as nuts, pepitas, and pumpkin butter in small bowls. Arrange cheeses and accompaniments on a marble, white, or copper platter - or a mixture of all - it's fun to stack and get creative. Add cheese knives and serve.

In what is now one of the largest annual events hosted by the Renasant Convention Center, the three-day Ducks Unlimited Expo (DUX) attracts thousands of visitors of all ages from many surrounding states. A World Away In Less Than an Hour:
THE ARKANSAS DELTA

eeding a little break from the regular routine, but not much time to travel far? A jaunt to the Arkansas Delta is the ideal getaway. For a day trip or an overnight stay, there is much to see and do with time to relax. We crossed the “old bridge” heading into Arkansas, and in less than 45 minutes we arrived at our first stop, the picturesque tiny town of Wilson. The first impression is striking. Wilson’s beautifully restored Tudorstyle buildings surround the town square in “America’s Village.” The hub of the community is the Wilson Cafe. More than simply a restaurant, the café serves as a social center. The exceptional farm-to-table cuisine is fabulous, and the robust menus feature local ingredients that change with the seasons. The wine list is exceptional, and the craft cocktails are not to be missed. When the bartender realized someone in our party was celebrating a birthday, she quickly surprised her with a Birthday Cake Martini.

A stroll across the square from the cafe is the award-winning boutique Louis Hotel. Located inside the town’s restored historic administration building, The Louis is a blend of Delta history and modern luxury. Our accommodations were fantastic - elegant yet cozy. The lounge is contemporary without feeling out of place, and again the bartender was skilled and attentive. It was a rare cool night in August, and the staff turned on the firepits so we could enjoy a nightcap on the rooftop. Everything at The Louis is a notch above, from the guest rooms with premium linens made from locally-grown cotton to the perfect service provided by friendly staff. A trip to Wilson would not be complete without shopping at White's Mercantile. It is owned by Holly Williams, granddaughter of country music legend Hank Williams, and has become a destination all its own. Beautifully curated with home décor, gourmet foods, artisan gifts, books, clothing, candles, and more, the shop holds a little bit of everything. The Wilson Pharmacy (an actual working pharmacy) also has a great selection of gifts and specialty items. Mississippi River Expeditions, owned by
Matthew Burdine and headquartered in Memphis, has an outpost on the Wilson Square. Capitalizing on river access, the substantially large, multiperson canoes offer a guided perspective for exploring the Mississippi River. The Wilson Motor Club, next door to The Louis, is expected to open soon, and will be home to an incredible collection of classic cars. One of Arkansas' hidden treasures is also housed on the Wilson Square - the Hampson Archeological Museum. It displays thousands of artifacts telling the story of the Nodena people, who flourished in the Mississippi Delta 1450-1600 A.D. It is free and worth a visit. One factor consistent throughout Wilson: everyone from the shop clerk at White’s to the attendants at The Louis provide extraordinary service. Friendly, accommodating, and helpful, they make sure your visit to Wilson is exceptional…and that you want to come back. Just a short drive from Wilson is Dyess. The Dyess Colony was one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal agricultural resettlement communities established during the Great Depression. Most famously and the reason it is a pilgrimage for music fans, Dyess was the home of Johnny Cash. The beautifully restored Johnny Cash Boyhood Home is where the legendary "Man in Black" lived from 1935-1950, and the modest farmhouse is preserved much as it was during his childhood. His early life in Dyess was his foundation and inspired many of his greatest songs. The Johnny Cash Boyhood Home is an Arkansas State University Heritage Site, and ASU restored and manages several sites throughout the Arkansas Delta. Other sites include Lakeport Plantation in Lake Village, the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum in Piggott, and our next stop, the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum in Tyronza.
The Southern Tenant Farmers Museum is located in the historic Tyronza Bank building where the Southern Tenant Farmers Union was founded in 1934, during the era Johnny’s family was farming. The museum tells the story of sharecroppers - both Black and white - who united to fight for fair wages, dignity, and workers' rights. The small but powerful Museum helps explain the struggles and resilience of so many farmers. With numerous festivals, live music, farmers markets, wine tastings, canoe trips, writers conferences, a top-rated golf course, and more, there is something for everyone in the Arkansas Delta. Map your route along the Great River Road, put on a roadtripping-soundtrack of Johnny and Rosanne (and maybe some Black Oak Arkansas too!), and in less than an hour from Downtown, you’ve made a great escape. “T
his was about much more than putting on a fashion show. We wanted to show that Memphis has the talent, creativity, venues, models, designers, media, and community support to build a legitimate fashion-week platform,” said Elizabeth Sullivan, founder and co-producer of Memphis Swim Week. Along with co-producer Kindly Myers, this dynamic duo definitely produced a show that was legit and much more. This inaugural, multi-day event was a celebration of culture, beauty, and entertainment. Held at the Peabody Hotel on Friday, August 21, the sold-out crowd of 300 guests walked the red carpet, stopping to pose for Hollywood and internationally recognized Getty Images runway senior photographer Mark G (also known as Dr. Mark Gunter), before entering the Venetian Ballroom for an experience as well as a show. Sydney Neely - if you’ve been to a Grizz or Tiger game you know her - was emcee for the night, and acclaimed radio DJ Nyce Lyfe provided the high-energy soundtrack.
Elizabeth is quick to point out that she and Kindly were producing the show, but a well-organized production team was crucial in making the show successful. With over 65 models from 12 states and 15 distinct runway presentations, this was a significant show that required extensive planning and night-of experience. This A-team included Lauren Draffin of Beg & Borrow who served as Fashion Coordinator and helped oversee designers, wardrobe, and backstage production; Tyra Anderson served as Hair Director; Matt Gossett served as Beauty Director; Wheat Robinson and KG Greer of Street Savvy Media, along with Computer 56

with PowerNation, assisted with media, design, graphics, and production; plus dozens of additional volunteers, hair and makeup artists, models, photographers, designers, and production professionals helped bring the event together. Apparel from Lansky’s in the Peabody opened the show, pairing their signature jackets with swimwear. Where else than Memphis would a leather TCB jacket be the perfect coverup for a luxury bikini? Other swimwear brands shown included Donna Fatale, Feral Swimwear, Disco Mermaid, and several others, plus local designers Beg & Borrow, Brezay, and Gina Von Dee. “Our goal was to put Memphis designers on the same runway alongside brands and designers coming in from outside the city,” Elizabeth said. Elizabeth and Kindly wanted the event to represent more than fashion - they wanted it to showcase Memphis entertainment and culture. So this fashion show extravaganza also had live performances featuring Rowdy Franks, DAYV1S, and Brezay. A highlight and crowd favorite was a special dance performance by Alex Hannah, a local autistic actor, model, dancer, and Special Olympics athlete. “We brought together fashion, music, entertainment, and Memphis culture - and this was only year one,” Elizabeth said as she flashed her beautiful smile, “we're just getting started!” Congratulations to Elizabeth, Kindly, and team for bringing this worldclass Memphis Swim Week event to the Bluff City. ’m wishing for Fall right now! These temperatures have made getting dressed for any occasion in 100-degree heat a challenge. Still, the seasons do change in Memphis, and we couldn’t be more ready. Fall clothing is out on the floor in your favorite stores, and it's time to get those key pieces for your Fall wardrobe. According to Elle, Dior, Pucci, Dolce & Gabbana and Zimmermann are leaning heavily into silk scarf-inspired dressing with printed tops and statement dresses. Find a simple, fabulous scarf — it has the power to transform any ensemble. Leather is once again the fabric of choice. Look for leather bomber jackets with unexpected trims or shapes. According to Elle, “go big or go home” when it comes to picking your leather pieces. Puffy sleeves, oversized collars and big funnel necks will give dressing some drama. Leather has such versatility and truly will always be a Fall favorite. Vogue cites this Fall season to be defined as an expressive approach to style. Designers are embracing contrast. It’s all about minimalist silhouettes with rich textures. They proclaimed that this year’s Fall looks very wearable and exciting. The suit is also making a statement this year. Relaxed tailoring with interesting shapes and profiles gives power dressing a whole new meaning in 2026. Denim is still a “go to” for Fall. According to Harper's Bazaar, we should look for deep indigo colors in slim and skinny fits. Bazaar says to look for interesting sweatshirts with a collegiate logo. It is called “Effortless Prep” dressing with a West Coast influence. A unique and fun henley should be a must-have purchase. Pair it with a long midi-skirt, and you have a modern take to the classic preppy handbook. Cropped trench coats are continuing this Fall as a great transition piece. Footwear is all about the mules! Find a fab mule to wear with everything. 66

According to Who, What, Wear, even mule tennis shoes have gone viral. They advise leaning more to classic silhouettes that you will never get tired of. Some other items to add to your wardrobe are brooches like Carrie Bradshaw would wear, and skullcaps and animal prints on shirts, purses, and shoes. Fall dressing is my favorite season; Vogue says the Fall runways showed bold proportions, oversized designs, close-fit tailoring, dramatic hemlines with billowy pants that all create eye-catching approaches to fashion. I love Fall because you can combine seasonal pieces to make something interesting and fresh to your ensemble. It's this mix that makes dressing fun, exciting, and something to always “fall” back on!
