4-H STRONG 4-H STRONG: ADJUSTING & ADAPTING IN 2020 When the COVID-19 pandemic hit Canada in early 2020, the world as we know it changed. But, the 4-H movement has remained as strong as ever during these challenging times. Across the country, 4-H clubs worked hard to tweak programs and activities so that 4-H’ers can keep having fun and learning to do by doing at home.

From coast-to-coast, 4-H clubs and organizations have rolled out fun, safe, inclusive, and creative programming to continue providing 4-H’ers with the same leadership skills, confidence, and resiliency 4-H has been supporting for over 100 years.

Keep reading to check out what 4-H has looked like in different areas of Canada this year, and how 4-H’ers have been positively affecting their clubs, communities, country, and world. And be sure to try out the activities yourself!

QUEBEC 4-H’ERS MAKING HAPPY MEMORIES In Quebec, the 4-H community has kept busy throughout the COVID-19 pandemic making happy memories, spreading cheer, and learning new skills.

VIRTUAL TUTORIALS SHINE LIGHT ON LIVESTOCK As part of the Quebec 4-H at Home program, a series of fascinating video tutorials was rolled out around the theme of livestock showmanship.

Created by Brian Woods, the Small Livestock Projects Leader from the Howick 4-H Club - and delivered with the help of 4-H youth - the video series dives into small livestock showmanship, including rabbit and poultry. From safe animal handling to dress code to how to introduce and give background on your animal, the tutorials provide plenty of helpful advice.

NOVA SCOTIA ROLLS OUT EIGHT WEEKS OF FUN FROM HOME Kicking off in May 2020, 4-H Nova Scotia rolled out eight packages of weekly activities, challenges, and competitions for 4-H’ers to participate in from home. A theme was assigned each week, and the digital packages included a photo of the week, a ‘Try-It-Tuesday” activity, a printable worksheet, and fun surprises. ENGAGING IN MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS Week one was based on the Community Engagement & Communications Pillar, which focused on the importance and benefits of taking care of your mental health.

• The Pic of the Week was all about happiness, with 4-H’ers encouraged to share photos by email or on social media of their pet, or anything else that makes them feel happy.

STAYING HEALTHY AND ACTIVE Week four focused on the Environment & Healthy Living Pillar and was all about staying healthy and active at home.

• Try-It-Tuesday with Nicole Martin, 4-H NS Ambassador and Kings County Council President, featured a video highlighting how to create cool crafts using supplies found at home.

SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY AT HOME The sixth week dug into the Science & Technology Pillar, proving that there’s plenty of exploration and experimentation to be done from the comfort of home.

• The Worksheet celebrated World Oceans Day by creating an underwater comic strip.

Over the summer, 4-H’ers in Alberta had the opportunity to bring back the fun of summer camp while still following health and safety guidelines.

The 4-H Alberta Online Virtual Camp saw campers participate in online and offline skill sessions, ranging from cooking and outdoor exploration to crafts and science, all based around the theme, Jumanji – Escape from the Jungle.

A typical day for campers involved virtual group sessions with counsellors, skill sessions, and group activities. The skill sessions included: • Arts & Crafts – making slime, kite building, chalk making, creating fossils, and creating a spoon catapult.

• Outdoor Explorer – learning knots, shelter building, building a bird feeder, and creating a sundial.

PROJECT: Effect of Nano-Crystalline Cellulose Coated Packaging on Shelf Life of Fresh Produce

4-H MEMBER: Amanda H., Grade 12 – Alberta To tackle the abundance of plastic packaging on food, Amanda developed an alternative packaging option using nano-crystalline cellulose coating on cardboard to package fresh foods. The results?

They were compelling and showed promise for more environmentally conscious packaging to be tested!

4-H MEMBER: Caelan D., Grade 9 – Nova Scotia Did you know seaweed has antifungal properties? Caelan explored the addition of seaweed into bread in a variety of ways to reduce mold growth and food waste. The addition of seaweed showed an increase in the shelf life of bread!

STOMPING OUT SNEAKY SALMONELLA PROJECT: Identifying and Controlling the Spread of Salmonella Pathogens in the Poultry Industry 4-H MEMBER: Mac D., Grade 9 – British Columbia

PREEN OIL POSSIBILITIES PROJECT: Preen Oil vs Mites – The Effect of Chicken Uropygial Oil on Red Mites

Mac invented a simple testing device that indicates if Salmonella is present in chicken feces – allowing for quick testing on-site instead of waiting for lab results - and protecting farmers and consumers from the dangerous pathogen.

4-H MEMBER: Danae K., Grade 10 – British Columbia Uropygial oil (or preen oil) is a waste product of chicken production, but was used to see if it could combat red mites – a common pest in the coop setting. Even though the results were inconclusive, Danae’s experiment offered new possibilities for using this oil.

BEET-ING WINTER CORROSION PROJECT: A Corrosion Comparison of Beet Juice and Road Salt 4-H MEMBER: Mark N., Grade 8 – Alberta

PROJECT: Inspecting How Light Impacts Bacterial Counts in Sauerkraut

With beet juice becoming a common alternative to road salt during winter maintenance, this project looked at how beet juice compared to road salt in corroding various metals. Mark found that beet juice reduced corrosion on vehicles, public infrastructure, and more!

THE SECRET POWER OF SAUERKRAUT

This project built upon Ruby’s past food science experiments and lit up the impact of light on the fermentation process of sauerkraut and the bacteria it produces. Comparing different levels of light identified an optimal light level for producing good bacteria in sauerkraut!

SCIENCE FAIR STEP-BY-STEP How does the 4-H Canada Science Fair work? Here’s how to get going: 1. Brainstorm, explore, and nail down a topic for your science fair project – either independently or with another 4-H’er.

(Be sure to check out 4-h-canada.ca/ sciencefair for tons of info, inspiration, and resources to help you nail down a project).

2. Register your project at 4-h-canada.ca/ sciencefair as soon as you get started for support and advice as you embark on your project, then be sure to return and upload your final project by Jan. 11, 2021.

3. Receive feedback from a panel of judges who will assess all projects virtually in late January.

4. If your project is selected as a finalist, you will be invited to move on to the second round of competition in March.

5. Winning projects are then invited forward to compete for more than $1 million in prize money, awards, and scholarships at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in May!

MEET THE 2020 4-H L.E.A.D.ERS Are you ready to meet the 2020 4-H Canada Leadership Excellence Awards of Distinction (L.E.A.D.) recipients?

Each year, 4-H Canada selects four outstanding 4-H members as L.E.A.D. recipients based on their personal development, community impact, and leadership excellence in relation to one of 4-H Canada’s four Leadership Development Pillars. Each L.E.A.D. recipient receives a $20,000 scholarship, plus is connected with their dream mentor from within their field of study.

Early mornings back in high school were exciting when I would go into the local radio station.

During my term as the 4-H BC Ambassador for the Kootenay Region, I was interviewed regularly. I also invited the radio station to several events, such as weigh-ins and the Show and Sale. I celebrated Show Your 4-H Colours in 2017 by wearing green and promoting 4-H on the radio station.

When my term as Ambassador ended, and I started my term on the 4-H Canada Youth Advisory Committee, and I still participate in radio interviews when I am home. This year the Kootenay Region has a new 4-H BC Ambassador, Ellie Shepperson!

In August 2020, we did a radio interview together with MyEastKootenayNow. Ellie phoned in, and I went into the radio station. We talked about what was happening in the Kootenays for 4-H and how youth could get involved. The conversation highlighted how 4-H BC has had an exciting year with new ways for members to connect with their club and community. This included discussion on the new 4-H at Home project, and the Gardening Basics video series, which were emceed by 4-H BC Ambassadors from across the province. LEARNING THE MI’KMAW LANGUAGE

The Summerside 4-H Rockets in Summerside, NL have started a new project this past year which introduced the club to Indigenous Cultural Learning.

As the Co-ordinator and a Leader in our club, as well as a Mi’kmaw woman, I wanted to take my passion for Indigenous learning and bring it to my 4-H club. Pre COVID-19, the members learned some Mi’kmaq songs and teachings, such as smudging and the four sacred medicines.

In the future, I’d also like to teach them how to make their own rattles from hide and how to make hair pieces.

In the meantime, to keep the 4-H program fresh in the members’ minds, we have started online Indigenous Mi’kmaw Language Learning using the Club’s Facebook page. I have been adding posts weekly with new words and sentences in English, Mi’kmaw, and phonetically. I also post a short video on how to pronounce the words and sentences, so that not only do the members see it, but they also hear how to say it.

The Indigenous Mi’kmaw Language Learning has been going since March 2020 and will continue, so that no matter what happens with the continued COVID-19 restrictions, the Summerside 4-H Rockets Club will be reaching its members and keeping them involved with the 4-H program.

NERVES CAN’T HOLD BACK THIS 4-H’ER

BY MOIRA MCRANN 4-H CANADA YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE – ALBERTA REPRESENTATIVE Hey there! I’m Moira McRann and I am 4-H Alberta’s current Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) Representative.

I have been a 4-H member of the Savanna 4-H Multi Club and am involved in lots of provincial activities. My first experience taking part in a 4-H Canada national program was at the Leadership Summit that was hosted in Ottawa in February 2020.

“If I could offer any advice to a member thinking about attending a national event, or even a provincial event for that matter, my advice is this: do it! 4-H offers so many opportunities to meet new people and have new experiences, and you won’t regret it.”

This was a huge learning experience for me. I was quite nervous, and I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know very many people who would be there. That all changed when I stepped off the plane. THE FUTURE OF OUR FOOD STARTS WITH YOU 4-H has deep roots in agriculture and was founded on the innovation and energy of youth engaged on important topics in agriculture. Today, 4-H’ers are global citizens who are very interested in where their food comes from, how it’s grown and produced, and what environmental factors affect food production around the world.

In the 1,800+ 4-H clubs across Canada, youth (including yourself) are exploring important topics on how to improve and protect the planet. From planting community gardens to repairing small engines to raising animals, and everything in between, the activities and projects you complete are giving you the tools, skills, and knowledge to achieve meaningful changes, building a happier and healthier world for everyone.

Every one of us can help address the global challenges we face. The Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs) are 17 important goals created by United Nations Member States in 2015 to improve life – for everyone, everywhere. These goals act as a roadmap for improving climate action, food security, environmental stewardship, and more.

We’re all experiencing the impacts of climate change and with global food insecurity on the rise, achieving the SDGs are more important today than ever before, especially in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. The secret weapon in achieving these goals is youth like you using your skills and your voice to implement and support growth and change in your own community.

Through the Proud to Bee a 4-H’er and Steeped in Soil initiatives, members plant, grow and tend to bee-friendly gardens and get their hands in the dirt to learn about the important role pollinators, healthy soil, and our wider environment have in maintaining our food supply! Together, these programs help members learn about the issues first-hand while getting involved in their communities to educate others on what they’re learning.

KENDRA ELLIOTT PURSUES PASSION AS VETERINARIAN The 4-H path takes youth places. Kendra Elliott is a perfect example.

Kendra has a long history with 4-H, dating back to 1998 when she was a member of the Pipestone 4-H Beef Club. By 2012, she had become one of the first Manitoba Representatives for the 4-H Canada Youth Advisory Committee. In 2015, she took on the role of 4-H Saskatchewan Future Leader, volunteering with the Saskatoon 4-H Beef Club.

Fast forward to today, and Kendra is a recent graduate from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, SK, and holds a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.

We recently caught up with Kendra to ask about her educational and career journey. Keep reading to get a look inside her adventure from 4-H’er to Mixed Animal Veterinarian.

A recent graduate in Veterinary Medicine, 4-H alumna Kendra Elliott is entering her dream career as a Mixed Animal Veterinarian.

4-H: How did your 4-H involvement impact the path you chose for postsecondary education?

4-H: Did your 4-H background make it easier to get involved in campus activities and groups?

Kendra: My 4-H experience with meetings (participating, taking minutes, acting as chair), and communicating with a wide variety of people definitely made being part of campus clubs a natural fit.

4-H: When you graduated in 2019, did you feel prepared for the workforce and the real world?

Kendra: Does anyone ever feel like they know what they’re doing? ;) But, I’ve found “Learn To Do By Doing” popping into my head quite often during this past year.

Kendra: I love cows! Probably because of 4-H… I think that the time I spent working with project animals - learning their behaviours, loving their personalities – makes working with cattle comfortable for me, and fuels my passion for ensuring livestock receive quality care throughout the entire production cycle. The veterinary profession has a lot of diversity in what a career can look like. But, I can’t see mine without beef cattle.

Kendra’s love and empathy for all creatures, big and small, makes a veterinary career her perfect match.

4-H: Are there 4-H experiences that have helped in your new career as a Mixed Animal Veterinarian?

4-H: What is your fondest memory of 4-H?

Kendra: Selling my 4-H steers was always emotional – there is a lot to learn about saying goodbye. I am very thankful that I have had experiences that allow me to empathize with my clients, care for myself, and advocate for my patients.

4-H: How has 4-H changed your life?

4-H: Do you plan to stay involved in 4-H?

Kendra: All the friends I have made along the way.

Kendra: Changed likely isn’t the right word, since 4-H has always been there for me. The scholarships, travel opportunities, and all of the skills and experiences I’ve gained through 4-H have shaped who I am as a person.

Kendra: I look forward to getting settled into my new career and into a community, and being able to get involved with the local 4-H clubs.

The 4-H beef project members in the Western District area of New Brunswick worked hard with their animals in the fall of 2019 and early 2020 when COVID-19 hit the province, creating challenges for them to compete in the 67th Annual Carleton County Spring Show and Sale, scheduled for April 13-15, 2020.

However, organizers quickly put together a plan that would alleviate health and safety concerns, and allow the show and sale to continue (if a little differently than usual).

4-H’ers prepared their animals for the show with all the same time, effort, and finishing touches - but instead of taking them to the show, the show came to them, with the show and sale staff travelling to each 4-H’ers location to take photos for online viewing.

The next step was to carefully schedule time for each competitor to ship to one location for a weigh-in, while adhering to all precautions and social distancing guidelines.

The final step was for the judge, ring steward, and volunteers to travel to each farm to view, judge, and record the scores of each animal to determine the awards.

For the sale portion of the event, an online auction was held, with bidders logging on to view the animals and place their bids.

4-H’ers were also sure to keep the fundraising side of the event alive. The community came together to donate to restaurants and grocery stores in the Saint John River Valley area. Donations were used to provide bagged lunches, Sunday dinners, and Easter dinners to those affected by the

DISCOVERING AGRICULTURE AROUND THE WORLD More and more 4-H Clubs have been trying out user-friendly virtual meeting programs (like Zoom) to stay connected this year.

Moving online has allowed for many creative and out-of-the-box meetings. Here’s one example from the Blenheim 4-H Field Crop Club in Ontario.

This year, the 4-H members have been able to connect with farmers and those within the agricultural sector in countries around

COVID-19 pandemic, including children and seniors. To date, the Carleton County Spring Show and Sale exhibitors and 4-H members have raised over $175,000, all of which has been donated back into the community.

In 2020, the Carleton County Spring Show and Sale came to the competitors rather than the competitors coming to the show!

the world, including Australia, Nepal, Chile, and Zimbabwe. It has been very interesting to learn about agriculture in each of these countries and compare the crops and cropping practices to those used in Ontario.

Members have learned that in Australia, some farmers own their own planes to seed and fertilize, and they sometimes crop scout from the cockpit. In Chile, being a farmer typically means you are managing people, not sitting in the seat of the tractor. Nepal is an agricultural country with more than half the population involved in farming.

It is great to see that 4-H is alive and well across the globe! 4-H teaches us to “Learn To Do By Doing” - and although that might look a little different this year, it has allowed new opportunities for learning, developing, and connecting in ways we have not been able to in the past.

Blenheim 4-H Field Crop members are looking forward to the day they might be able to go visit these countries and check out their agricultural practices in person!

TO BETTER LIVING EXPERIENCING LIFE IN JAPAN

Throughout my years in 4-H, my family has hosted six Japanese exchange students through this program. While they were here, we have been able to show them what life is like in Canada, while learning about their culture.

country. The second week we spent with a host family where I got to live the life of a Japanese teenager. I attended school with my host brother for three days during that week, where I learned the art of shodo (Japanese Calligraphy).

In 2017 I had the opportunity to travel to Japan for two weeks with nine other 4-H members and had an amazing experience.

I really enjoyed spending time with my host family, telling them what it is like in Canada, and learning more about Japanese culture and language. I have made so many memories through the 4-H program, but I know this one will stick with me forever.

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH PARTICIPACTION Did you know that only 39% of youth in Canada meet the national guidelines of 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day?

This stat was discovered in ParticipACTION’s 2020 Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth1. The good news is that ParticipACTION has big plans to improve this stat. We caught up with Dr. Leigh Vanderloo, Knowledge Translation Manager for ParticipACTION for a behind-thescenes peek at their plans!

4-H Canada: Our readers are keen to find out the story behind ParticipACTION – how did it start and why?

4-H Canada: What are the top challenges around physical activity you’re seeing young people face today?

Dr. Vanderloo: The story of ParticipACTION begins in 1971 (we’re celebrating our 50th anniversary next year!) with the creation of Sport Participation Canada. That organization was created because at the time there was a study that found the future of Canadian health was at risk from poor physical fitness and apathy on the part of Canadians.

Eventually Sport Participation Canada turned into ParticipACTION, an independent agency working for the vision of a Canada where physical activity is a vital part of everyday life.

Dr. Vanderloo: Increasing sedentary time and increasing recreational screen time.

Although technology, like wearables and certain active games, can play a part in keeping us active, it definitely had a negative influence on youth physical activity. We recommend youth self-limit (with support from parents/guardians and leaders) recreational screen time to two hours per day, allowing for more time to get moving!

Dr. Leigh Vanderloo

4-H Canada: ParticipACTION and 4-H Canada have partnered to develop the Physical Health portion of our Healthy Living Initiative to support the wellbeing of 4-H members and leaders. What does this partnership mean for ParticipACTION? Dr. Vanderloo: ParticipACTION has a mission to support all Canadians in physical activity.

We rely on the support of many partners from many sectors to not only share that message, but also to make that message resonate with the people they serve. 4-H is an expert on connecting with youth and youth leaders, and creating content and messages that will inspire them to action. Partnering with 4-H is a great example of joining strengths together to make a super-power.

4-H Canada: If you had one piece of advice to give a young person, what would it be?

Dr. Vanderloo: Social media and technology in general don’t have to be a barrier for physical activity, they can actually be one of the keys to getting active. Work together with your friends and parents in getting active, support one another to build healthy, active lives. Consider launching daily physical activity challenges, or sharing inspiring stories and facts - anything that can help you motivate each other to get moving.

And don’t forget: Make it fun and enjoyable! If you’re not enjoying yourself, you’re less likely to return to that behaviour. And when it comes to physical activity, we want you to keep coming back and getting active! It is through consistent daily repetition that we develop long-lasting habits, and being physically active is no different from other habits like brushing

your teeth. The more often you get moving, the more likely this habit will stick!

BY IARA PAVON 4-H BC AMBASSADOR I became interested in the Gardening Basics video series that is part of the 4-H BC @ Home program because gardening is something I enjoy doing every year with my mom, and it’s always good practice for things in the future. Gardening is something I do yearly due to the fact that I keep bees, and our bees need food. Plus, they are vital for the pollination of our flowers and plants.

I loved this program! It was wonderful to get that feeling of success after I grew the plants that 4-H provided me with. I made salads, and am excited to give out the extra seeds and vegetables to other people.

The program has developed my skills in growing plants that I hadn’t really tried out, like squash and peas. Normally I spend most of my gardening knowledge on flowers, lettuce, and carrots. It was fun trying to grow new things, and I also enjoyed practicing new techniques with my gardening – for example, I tried out aquaponics.

I also think it helped with passing time during this pandemic. I would recommend this program to anyone who wants to start gardening. It really lets you experience what its like to be a responsible gardener and take the best care of your garden.

4-MINUTES WITH 4-H: MOIRA MCRANN & COURTNEY WHITE TALK MENTAL HEALTH In October 2020, 4-H Canada and BASF Canada Agricultural Solutions rolled out a video series to chat about topics that are top of mind, not just for 4-H’ers, but for Canadians of all ages across the country.

4-H Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) representatives met up with BASF executives via Zoom for “4 Minutes with 4-H.” You can check out the full series on 4-H Canada’s YouTube channel, but keep reading for highlights from the Mental Health conversation between Alberta YAC rep, Moira McRann, and BASF Head, Global Human Resources Seeds & Traits and Agricultural Solutions North America, Courtney White.

MOIRA: I am a nine-year 4-H member from Alberta, and am Alberta’s representative on 4-H Canada’s Youth Advisory Committee.

Today, I have Courtney White with me from BASF and we are going to be talking about mental health.

Courtney, how have things changed for you since COVID-19 hit?

COURTNEY: Because of my role, clearly mental health and people are at the forefront of all I do each day. I serve as the Head of Human Resources for BASF, and I am so happy to be joining this conversation about mental health because a great part of my job is about people, so mental health is clearly something that is top of mind and top of heart always, but especially with so much going on in the world today.

Spending more and more time at home has been one of the biggest changes that I’ve had to get used to. Admittedly, prior to this, I always dreamt of a return to being home more frequently. I’ve learned now though that perhaps as the cliché goes, too much of a good thing can truly be too good, so I’ve learned now that balance is key.

MOIRA: When you’re not in front of your computer, or running meetings, what do you do? How have you been managing?

COURTNEY: I’m going to admit something to you. I have my own dance party breakout moments where I just need to take a change from the routine and do something a little bit silly just to break the monotony of the day. I’m also trying to pick up a new language and use the time wisely. I’ve also tried to spend quite a bit of time out in the community, supporting those who are not able to get out and aren’t as mobile.

MOIRA: I never really expected that I would be learning virtually, but spending a lot of time in front of my computer has made me realize that it is important to find ways to deal with things away from my technology. So, I put my phone away, and sometimes I just go for a walk, or I exercise, or go visit family and friends, and make sure that I’m not isolating too much because I know that that can sometimes have detrimental effects on mental health.

Do you have any tips for anybody who might feel like they are more isolated than they were before?

MOIRA: My best two recommendations when it comes to mental health resources are Kids Help Phone and 4-H Canada. Kids Help Phone is a 24/7 hotline. So you can call them at any time. Their number is 1-800-668-6868.

They are a fantastic service and very good at what they do.

You can call them with any questions and it is completely confidential. Another good resource comes from 4-H Canada’s Healthy Living Initiative. We have mental health resources on our website at 4-h-canada.ca/healthyliving where you find the help that you need.

COURTNEY: Without trying to sound too simplistic, my hope is that for anyone who starts to feel isolated, that they can recognize the signs that may come with that, such as desiring to be removed from others. That doesn’t mean we are not all entitled to take a break from time to time – but I would also say it’s a chance to make sure that we stay connected to others. I always think that if you feel as though you still would prefer not to, or you can’t do it, there are so many resources that are available that people can tap into to determine what some coping mechanisms might be.

LEADERS’ CORNER 4-H PROVIDING AN ANCHOR AMID TURBULENT TIMES In responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 4-H movement in Canada remains dedicated to working collaboratively to continue nurturing responsible, caring, and contributing youth leaders.

In fact, youth in rural areas are more at risk and need engagement, and 4-H has been one of the few organizations that have continued to work with youth during COVID-19.

4-H members, leaders, and clubs are demonstrating the leadership, confidence, and resiliency the 4-H program has instilled in them.

TIPS ON TAKING YOUR CLUB VIRTUAL Want insight on how to take your 4-H club into the virtual world?

We recently had the opportunity to chat with Adriana Van Oostveen, a leader in the Bethel Cloverbud Club in Brant County, ON. Adriana shared a success story on how their club has not just survived, but thrived during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Then we do one or two activities around the theme.

CLOVERBUDS CHIME IN It’s clear from member feedback that the Brant County Cloverbuds are having a blast online. Here’s what some of the members had to say about their virtual programming:

“Cloverbuds was still FUN this year!”

Some of the activities we have done include: • A virtual teddy bear picnic with homemade ice cream • Making a digital quilt • Family pet meet & greet • Virtual beef farm tour • Photography skills lab & contest 4-H: What advice would you give fellow leaders who are looking to pivot to virtual club meetings and activities?

4-H: How has your club pivoted to continue providing programming in 2020?

Adriana: At first, we hit pause, but began to think about options for our club later in the spring. In June we took things virtual and haven’t looked back. We initially planned six virtual meetings over the summer, but have continued and will be wrapping up this November with a total of 12.

4-H: What do virtual meetings look like, and what type of activities has the club been doing online?

Adriana: In-person, we met every two weeks on Friday evenings, so we tried to keep a similar structure. At the beginning of the two-week block, we send out a PDF that outlines five to six at-home activities for the members and their families to complete. We request they send us photos and/or scans of their completed activities one day prior to the virtual meeting, and we then prepare a slideshow. Our virtual meetings are 30 minutes long (a short time was key for this age group). We start with the Pledge, do a roll call, and then have a show and tell where we display the slideshow, and each member shares about the activities they completed.

Adriana: I believe the key to our success was having the at-home activities for members to complete on their own. This allowed them to fit the activities into their own schedules, and to use their own resources and creativity to make it happen. We were also as flexible as we could be, giving them three craft options, or creative freedom over choosing a recipe based on what they had on-hand. We kept our online time as minimal as we could, and essentially just used the virtual meeting for connection with each other rather than a platform to complete activities. I adapted activities from the provincial manual, but also searched for activities, videos, and resources online that fit our topic.

“We still got to learn, do new things like crafts and making recipes, and I got to see Cloverbud friends and meet new Cloverbud friends.”

SAFELY NAVIGATING THE VIRTUAL 4-H WORLD The diversity of the 4-H program across Canada is something to be celebrated, looking different from province to province. However, the safety and well-being of youth members is our shared priority across 4-H. With many clubs currently running virtually, it’s important for leaders to remember that whether meeting face-to-face or online, it’s vital for youth safety to remain top-of-mind.

TIPS FOR PROVIDING A SAFE, FUN & INCLUSIVE ONLINE ENVIRONMENT

Use communications platforms (i.e. Facebook pages or email accounts) set up specifically for your club instead of using personal accounts. This demonstrates the legitimacy of the activities and provides protection from outside users.

Remind parents and youth that leaders will never request passwords, financial, or personal information in digital communications. Immediately report any such requests, which are called phishing.

Before sharing a video stream of your private space on a virtual meeting, ensure your backdrop is professional and appropriate for youth.

Do not communicate with youth via private messaging or individual texts. Instead communicate via email, social media groups, or group chats with all leaders and members included.

Ensure you have consent before capturing or sharing images of members, projects, or any other identifying information on social media.

Be conscious of your leadership role in 4-H when interacting on social media, whether through official club channels, or your personal accounts. You may also want to consider enabling privacy settings on personal accounts to control who can view your content.

Enable privacy settings on group social media accounts to ensure discussions and planning details are kept private. When using video platforms (i.e. Zoom), utilize the secure passcode options to ensure only invited participants can attend.

Promote a safe, inclusive, and fun environment by openly discussing how the Code of Conduct applies in a virtual space. For example, appropriate attire, kind and respectful words and actions, and using appropriate spaces when logging into online meetings (i.e. kitchens or living rooms, not bedrooms or bathrooms).

Consider your virtual “classroom” and any associated risks. For example, youth cannot work alone with an animal while on a virtual call, as leaders are not physically present to ensure safety or administer first aid. Communicate directly to youth and parents that supervision is required for at-home project work.

Follow the Rule of Two on digital spaces by having two leaders participate in the virtual meeting, refraining from one-onone coaching or mentoring, and asking members to participate from a central part of their home, rather than a private space, such as a bedroom.

TIM BELLEMORE IS TEACHING LIFE SKILLS TO YOUNG PEOPLE & SETTING THEM ON THE PATH TO SUCCESS

During a 4-H Achievement Day, Tim Bellemore of Nova Scotia was making the rounds when he came across Molly, a member of the Great Outdoors program which he led.

Molly, who was sitting with her sister, introduced Tim to her older sibling. The 4-H leader extended his arm for a handshake, but Molly’s sister didn’t return the gesture.

Instead, she leaned to one side and looked behind the man’s shoulder. Then to the other side, and did the same. She then glanced above Tim’s head. “No halo, no wings,” she quipped, “I expected more.”

If Tim hadn’t yet realized what sort of impact he was making on the youth in the St. Andrews 4-H Club, it was at that moment he did.

“I was stunned,” Tim says. “For a few seconds I was stunned, and then I got it. And it actually floored me and I probably stayed a little more humble because of it; that someone had put me on a pedestal where I should be wearing wings and a halo.”

And then there was the time when Tim was walking through a retail store in Antigonish and he heard a man shout his name.

“It’s teaching kids to do something that’s going to move them forward in life,” says Tim. Tim got involved in the program 17 years ago.

Since, he has spent countless hours leading such activities as hiking, snowshoeing, fishing, canoeing, archery, wildlife tours, overnight stays in the woods, and public speaking. His efforts mean members ‘Learn To Do By Doing’ – just as the 4-H motto states.

“It brings me a lot of joy,” he says. “It’s incredible to be involved in these amazing people’s lives, and to show them you can light a cotton ball on fire without a match, show them they can build a shelter…”

St. Andrews 4-H has always been a family affair for the Bellemores. Both Tim’s children — Jeremie and Casey — were members as kids, while Tim’s wife Colleen leads the club’s photography group.

Tim Bellemore is making a positive difference in the lives of others with his dedication to the St. Andrews 4-H club.

“Without Colleen, I wouldn’t be doing the job that people recognize me for,” he says. “She’s that instrumental. Without her, I would never be able to do what I did.”

Tim also credits Will Stewart, who co-leads the Great Outdoors program, for his work and dedication to the group.

Tim says he became hooked on 4-H during his very first year. He has also led welding and scrapbooking classes and has assisted with numerous other programs, and shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

“As long as the kids are interested,” he says when asked how long he’ll continue in 4-H. “I’m very proud of my club and the members and the leaders.”

“‘Hey Tim!’ And I look and here comes this tall, young man, probably close to 6-4, beanpole, and he walks up and he just embraced me in this big hug. And he was only in the (Great Outdoors) group two or three years, and in that short timeframe, I had that much of an influence on him. There’s been some amazing moments, actually.”

It's those kinds of stories that make you realize just how special a person Tim is and how big a role he has played in shaping the lives of young people in the Antigonish County community.

As the leader of the Great Outdoors 4-H program, Tim has taught life skills to young people and has provided the opportunity for individuals to explore their surroundings

FRED SHARPE HONOURED FOR LONG & OUTSTANDING SERVICE Fred Sharpe has been a Northumberland 4-H volunteer in Ontario since 1984, and over the past 35 years, has led more than 87 clubs and assumed many leadership roles.

In April 2020, 4-H Ontario recognized Fred’s long and outstanding service with the 2020 4-H Ontario Arbor Award, sponsored by Bayer Crop Science – a prestigious honour recognizing exemplary volunteer service with 4-H in Ontario and the community.

As a life-long learner who continues to seek new challenges, Fred continues to participate in 4-H opportunities to learn, build relationships, and maintain his passion. Noted by a fellow 4-H leader, “When it comes to 4-H, Fred is there; in Northumberland and beyond.”

Fred has fulfilled many roles within the Northumberland 4-H Association, including Secretary, Vice-President, President, Screening Coordinator, Newsletter Editor, and presently - Association Representative, Region 3 Vice-President, and Bingo Coordinator. As the Bingo Coordinator since 2013, Fred has raised $42,000 which has been used toward dozens of member and leader opportunities, along with association and club expenses.

“Fred’s leadership style allows members to develop confidence,” said Mary Catherine O’Neill, 4-H leader and parent. “Our youngest Brian was afraid of using a saw and was very worried about going to his first woodworking meeting, but came home ready and eager to return because Fred gave him the opportunity to be successful.”

Fred has also been part of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 580 for 31 years, over which time he has held many executive positions, including Membership Chair, Ways and Means Chair, Bar Chair, and Bingo Chair. In addition, Fred shares his expertise in building projects and plays a very important role in keeping the Legion open and in good repair.
