The first drafts of the company logo were designed. The first logo featured a speed demon as a symbol of dynamism and rebellion

Kristian Ghedina, Deborah Compagnoni and the Italian National Team use Dainese back protectors at the World Cup for the first time.

This was the first time that the back protector was introduced to the world of Winter Sports.

D-Mobile is created. This mobile research structure was an extension of the R&D department and visited race tracks around the world to identify and test the latest technological innovations.

Dainese became the “Safety Partner” of the Italian National Ski Team and D-Mobile provided assistance to skiers in the Alpine Skiing World Championship races.

Dainese exhibits its innovative technologies at the 56th Venice Biennale. The company presents the D-air®, the motorcyclists’ airbag, and Biosuit®, its pressurized suit for astronauts.

Back protectors, which up to that time were used only on the track, became available to the general public.

The No Impact division was formed to bring Dainese know-how to other sports: MTB, snowboard and alpine skiing.

Dainese became increasingly popular in the world of mountain biking and became the byword for protection. Dainese provided the champions Shaun Palmer, Anne-Caroline Chausson and Cedric Gracia with its protection systems. Nicolas Vouilloz became World Downhill Champion for the seventh time and entered the history books of mountain-biking with Dainese.

Following their success in the worlds of motorbikes, mountain bikes and skiing, Dainese decided to accept a new challenge and to bring the concept of safety to horse riding. The Dainese Equestrian Line was awarded a prize in the Safety & Security category by Beta International, the international event leader for the equestrian trade.

Protection for astronauts

Dainese was founded at Molvena (Vicenza).

The first article Dainese produced was a pair of motocross trousers.

The Dainese Technology Centre (D-Tec®) is created, an R&D technical centre for the study of protective technology and the development of products for the market.

The prototype of the D-air® airbag for motorcyclists was developed together with the Israeli firm Merhav APP and presented in Munich.

Special helmets and suits were created by the Dainese R&D Department for the “Sparks of Passion” event in which ice skaters played a key role in the magnificent choreography staged for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 20th Winter Olympic Games in Turin.

The collaboration between Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Dainese continued to make astronaut's lives safer. Dainese had already passed the NASA supplier selection procedure for making special protective items which astronauts would wear inside their space suits.

D-air® made its debut in WC races D-air became the unmatched leader for airbag protection in the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup.

SEA-GUARD

WHAT IS THE BIOSUIT? Starting from Arthur Iberall’s studies in the Fourties, it has been discovered that there are certain points of the body that, despite movements, do not contract and do not stretch. By connecting these points through the so-called “lines of non-extention”, pressure remains constant. BioSuit is designed to connect these points, being able to apply the necessary mechanic pressure to the body, although without compromising movement. The news is exactly the replacement of pneumatic pressurization with mechanic one. The inside of astronaut’s suits, in fact, in order for humans to survive in the vacuum of space, need to provide pressure. The skintight suit allows for a degree of movement impossible in a gas-filled suit.

The Dainese Group is the “Official Safety Partner” of the 2017 America’s Cup Winner Emirates Team New Zealand. The crew, who for the first time chose pedals instead of traditional “coffee grinders” to operate the winches, wore the new SEA-GUARD jacket designed and developed by Dainese, which integrates protection and aerodynamic performance with its floating functions.

At over 50 knots, the conditions facing the crew are extreme, similar to those to which MotoGP riders are exposed. On-board safety is therefore the key element behind the partnership between Dainese and Emirates Team New Zealand.This has led to the creation of SEA-GUARD, the first item of protective clothing specially designed for competitive sailing.

Thanks to a wise balance between Crash Absorb material and low-density PE, SEA-GUARD, in addition to its floating function, provides impact protection and also allows complete freedom of movement for next-generation grinders, who use their leg power to push pedals instead of armpowered winch grinding.

WHEN DID THE BIOSUIT GO TO SPACE? BioSuit has not gone to space yet. BioSuit was born from one of NASA’s needs who, for the first human journey to the Red Planet expected around 2030, has set up a project to design a new space suit, lighter and more practical.

HOW WAS THE BIOSUIT MADE? The lines of non-extension are represented by the red and black filaments that decorate the BioSuit prototype. The suit will be made of elastic material, but for all other features options remain open. For sure, BioSuit must guarantee to astronauts oxygen inflow, protect them from effects of prolonged microgravity, solar radiation and impacts with micrometeoroids, although offering greater flexibility and finding the perfect balance with ergonomics and comfort.

SEA-GUARD is the only ergonomic and comfortable solution designed to optimise crew performance.

SEA-GUARD incorporates an aerodynamic motorcycle hump, together with the Oxygen tank housing – something that the sailors must use in emergencies such as when the boat capsizes - and for on-board communication devices.

HOW DID THIS PROJECT COME ABOUT? Conceived by Dava Newman, MIT Professor and NASA’S Deputy Administartor, BioSuir has been designed by Trotti and Associates, owned by Argentinian space architect Guillermo Trotti, whereas the first prototypes are the outcome of the Dainese Science and Research Center’s know-how.

PRO ARMOR The result of Dainese technology, Pro-Armor uses an innovative design inspired by fractals, the nature language to create complex structures.

This design language, coupled with the latest generation of materials and technologies, allows the protector to simultaneously ensure a high level of protection and extreme flexibility, capable to replicating body biomechanics while maintaining mobility and coverage during stretching, compression, twisting and flexion.

CARBON ELASTOMER The carbon elastomer is the heart of Pro-Armor protection. Its nanometric structure, in case of impact, spreads energy through the surface.

The polymer reacts to the impact by transforming the energy into heat, dissipating it through the material itself.

The unique performance and properties of this material allow to absorb up to 83% of the energy released from the stroke.

The pre-curved construction of Pro-Armor, due to its capacity to follow the knee, allow the rider to have no restriction while pedalling.

The elastic bands have also been renewed, with a wider structure that allows them to avoid circulation blockages or skin rubbing

The Pro-Armor certified protector, unlike its predecessor, is no longer embedded in a pocket built into the stocking, but is sewn directly onto the mesh, thus guaranteeing extreme durability and stability to the knee pad.

The protector design is inspired by the fractals present in the world of nature, which guarantee this model not only aesthetics never seen before, but also different features. The texture is more concentrated in the center of the protector in order to guarantee the highest level of protection on the knee and the shin, while it is more open in the lateral parts of the structure, thus guaranteeing maximum fit and flexibility.

The exceptional flexibility is aided by overlapping layers of Crash Absorb® memory retention foam that move independently of one another, and follow the anatomy of the body. Its ergonomic pattern of hexagon shaped soft pads provide comfort and maximum freedom of movement (6 sides, mobility on the 30° 90° and 150° axes) along with effective protection.

The composite plates of the Manis move with controlled elasticity and so offers four dimensions of freedom. Thanks to the elasticated tendons that connects the plates, it can extend by up to eight per cent of its length; it can flex laterally up to an angle of 25° on either side; it can twist and flex forward. The special padded liner boasts a sandwich construction of 3 different materials, each of which performs a different function: Expanded polyethylene (ePE) for dimensional stability, Crash Absorb for impact absorption, and thermoformed expanded polyurethane (ePU) for comfort.

The entire structure is perforated throughout to enable maximum heat exchange.

Special material (water-repellent elastic-visco nitrile rubber) with shape retention memory and excellent energy absorption that adapts perfectly to the shape of the body and ensures optimum fit.

SuperFabric® is among the most durable, toughest fabric in the world, an innovative ceramic-coated low friction material that can provide very high levels of abrasion and slash resistance. SuperFabric® technology takes a fabric and overlays it with tiny plates (“guard plates”) in a specific arrangement. The gaps between guard plates allow complete flexibility.

It won’t snag like knitted fabrics, which is especially important in helping protect against the additional injuries caused by material catching or pulling. It allows air to pass in and around the tiny guard plates creating a remarkable air-breathing product.
