2021 IS LOOKING BRIGHT There’s nothing like a difficult year to shine a bright light on the enormous dose of happiness and fulfillment we get from racing sailboats. One of the best parts about the fiasco of 2020 was how much local sailboat racing was still able to go on, and how much good it did for those who were able to participate! 2021 will see that trend continue, and hopefully we can be racing freely around the region soon.

More this year than most, you’ll want to check back in on this schedule for changes and adjustments — watch for SARC updates at 48north.com/sarc and periodically in the printed version of 48° North. Additionally, we recommend staying in contact with organizing authorities to learn the specifics of various precautions and protocols.

What’s New for 2021?

A new year brings more than just resolutions, it brings revelations in the form of creative new races to add to the calendar. The coming year is no exception.

One of the big revelations in 2021 will be the addition of designated shorthanded racing classes at many events, and more events that are exclusively shorthanded. 2020 required shorthanded racing for pandemic reasons, and it turns out that people loved it. There are too many events of this type to name, but if you like racing shorthanded (for pandemic safety or the sheer joy and challenge of it) your options are increasing significantly, and there’s a good chance your favorite races may be offering a shorthanded class or two this year.

Race Week has a new home for 2021: Anacortes. Why it’s moving on from Point Roberts isn’t important; what is important is that Race Week is running again, this year in an accessible location with a variety of benefits, on and off the water. Race Week fans should note that the event is back to being five days of racing (Monday-Friday), but is in late June this year instead of late July. Filling in the gap in July with a bit of old school Race Week flavor, Oak Harbor Yacht Club is hosting a new three-day event called Whidbey Summer Classic Regatta, with racing on Penn Cove.

Even though it ran in 2020, Sloop Tavern Yacht Club’s second Women at the Helm event to complement the buoy regatta in late July is new to the SARC for 2021. This September race has a longer course and is called “Going The Distance”. Both Women SPONSOR E D BY P T R R I G G I N G & S PA R S

at the Helm events not only had great attendance, they had off-the-charts enthusiasm last year. Let’s keep that going for these and other events that promote inclusiveness.

By the time this calendar went to press, we knew that both Swiftsure and Van Isle 360 were unfortunately canceled for 2021. Keep an eye on those weekends for various localities to come up with creative ways to draw racers to the water when those classics would have been taking place. Notably, CYC Seattle is planning a new Puget Sound Pursuit Race on Memorial Day weekend.

Finally, there are a pair of fun and unique distance races to include on the calendar for the first time. One is brand new, and the other had its genesis and first run last year. They are the WA360 and the Salish 200, and they each start in Port Townsend. The Salish 200 takes sailors on a pair of 100-mile loops — around Vashon and the San Juan Islands in an order of your choosing. Northwest Maritime Center’s new WA360 takes it a few steps further. Whether you're training for a future Race to Alaska, or looking for an adventure race that doesn't require removing the engine from your boat, the non-stop, no-support WA360 might just be “the biggest on the water adventure you can have in your own backyard,” as their slogan declares. With seven waypoints bringing racers on a counterclockwise tour of Puget Sound, WA360 is a grueling 360-mile celebration of the distinctive maritime communities and challenging natural wonders of our home waters.

RACE READY RIGGING CHECKLIST content sponsored by PTR Rigging and Spars

As the presenting sponsor of the SARC, PTR Rigging and Spars is committed to serving the racing community, helping increase knowledge and understanding, and improving every sailor’s experience on the water.

Before you and your race crew cast off dock lines and enter a starting sequence this spring, prudence dictates some prerace boat work. A thorough check of your boat's various rigging components is critical for both performance and safety. Use this list to help make sure you’ve covered all of your bases:

MAST

Look the mast over from top to bottom.

Check the spar tube for cracks. Examine the mast base for corrosion and drainage. Ensure no rivets or screws are missing from the sail track. The main sail should move freely up and down the track.

Spreaders should be checked for proper fit without excessive play. They should be even in orientation, vertically and from side to side. Chafe gear at spreader ends should be removed routinely and replaced after inspection of the spreader ends and wires. Leather is best for chafe gear so use tape sparingly to avoid encouraging corrosion.

The mast should be in column and have proper tension for good sail shape and mast support. Rake should be measured as per class and or sail design. Tension should be even port and starboard.

STANDING RIG

Turnbuckles should be free to move for adjustment. Check all turnbuckles and clevis pins for fully bent cotter pins that are tucked into the fitting to avoid sail and line damage.

damage. Clevis pins should have full bearing and be exactly sized for the bore. If daylight is clearly visible along the lower edge of tang or chainplate, the pin might be too small. Check the chainplates for corrosion, proper pin bearing, leaks and cracks. Chainplates should be aligned with the turnbuckles and shrouds.

Rig tape should allow water to drain.

The backstay turnbuckle or adjuster should be functional for mast stability, main sail flattening, mast and sail shape.

The wind indicator should be properly aligned and operational.

All cars and blocks should move freely. All non-locking shackles aloft should be moused to discourage pins backing out. A cable tie will work in a pinch but seizing wire is best. All fittings aloft should be inspected for cotter pins.

Check the vang bracket and boom gooseneck for play and bore elongation.

Ensure that all mast lights are working. Radio check to test the antenna.

DRAG AND FRICTION

A clean rig will have less drag. Wash and wipe it all down, and lubricate moving parts.

Take time to understand and isolate the friction. For a halyard, it is best to start by removing the halyard from any clutch or turning block. Grasping both the fore and aft sides of the halyard pull it up and over the mast sheave, feeling for resistance and friction. Do the same exercise at each block and exit.

Proper line type and size is critical to operation of sheaves, blocks, clutches, and winches. It’s also one of the simplest ways to decrease drag.

A common mistake is to oversize the line so that it can be easily grasped. This has potential to create more drag; which thus requires even more grip. The goal is to have the line run through the hardware smoothly and easily. Assuming the hardware, block, clutch, and winch are correctly sized for the application — a good general rule is to favor the smaller line sizes that the manufacturer recommends. The best source of reliable information about line choice and size are the line and hardware manufacturers’ websites.

LINE CHAFE

Look for chafe especially on lines that might only be used in breezy conditions. This includes reef lines, vang, cunningham, and furling lines.

Pay special attention to halyard chafe where it enters and exits a clutch. This is especially important for cockpit-led spinnaker halyards, which are susceptible to loaded drop.

LIFELINES

1x19 uncoated stainless cable is durable, inspectable, dependable, and overall is the best value for the least amount of maintenance.

• Pro Tip – lifelines will last far longer if you do not tie fenders or anything else to them and limit weight on them when hiking, if possible.

Minimize tape over any stainless steel fittings. Closed body turnbuckles create a smooth surface with less chafe and are best reserved for lifelines.

Make sure all fittings have been treated with red thread lock to avoid coming loose through vibration and use.

Split rings should be completely closed or lightly taped to avoid being caught by sheets.

If using dyneema lifelines, inspect for chafe and replace if necessary.

MISCELLANEOUS

Winches should be routinely cleaned and serviced as per the manufacturer's direction.

Carry a jury rig kit for for emergency repairs.

Nobody wants their sailboat to accidentally become a motorboat. Masts are expensive, difficult, and complex to replace.

Periodic rig inspections by a professional are highly recommended and can be good value, especially before or soon after purchase. Use the inspection to create a prioritized punch list of items to address before racing and for future maintenance and care of the rig.

48° NORTH TOP 25 Distance races and around-thebuoys. Single-race events and multirace regattas. The qualifying races for 48° North’s Top 25 have something for everyone. Scoring is on a percentage basis depending on the size of the class: 0% (did not finish) to 100% (first in class), where the event score = (finishers – position + 1) / finishers.

Overall scores are an average of a boat’s

best five finishes. There is no minimum number of races required to qualify.

Multi-race events (like the South Sound Series) are scored as a single event.

Hopefully all these are able to run in 2021; and sooner rather than later, we can be crossing the presentlyclosed border and racing as a regional community once again.

RACING RULES CHANGES FOR 2021 On January 1, 2021 a new version of the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) goes into effect. Most of the rule changes for 2021-2024 are clarifications that remove ambiguity in the wording to reinforce the current common interpretation. Here are some of the important changes. (The comments provided below are mine alone and are not official interpretations.)

CHANGES AFFECTING SAFETY:

• New Rule 37 requires that when the Race Committee Signals Boat flies Code Flag Victor (White with a Red “X”), all boats must, if possible, monitor the race committee communication channel for search and rescue instructions.

• RRS 40 (PFDs) has been rewritten. If Code Flag Y is displayed before or with the warning signal, competitors are required to wear a PFD during that race. If the signal is made ashore, then competitors are required to wear a PFD while on the water.

• RRS 41 has been revised so a boat that receives help from others to aid an injured crew member or a crew member in danger (e.g., crew overboard) cannot be penalized for accepting such aid — even if they gain an advantage from it.

• New RRS 20.4 requires a boat to “make a signal that clearly indicates her need for room to tack” in addition to a hail when “conditions are such that a hail may not be heard.”

CHANGES TO DEFINITIONS:

• Start and Finish have been changed so the position of a boat’s hull (not its bowsprit or sails) is the only thing relevant to these definitions. Using the definitions of hull and bowsprit in the Equipment Rules of Sailing, this means boats with bowsprits (fixed or adjustable) can have their sprits — and headsails attached to the sprits — over the line at the start signal as long

as their hull is fully on the pre-start side of the line.

• The definition of a mark still says the anchor line of the mark is not part of the mark. But now, all other objects intentionally attached to the mark (like a limiting mark trailing behind a committee boat) are part of the mark and may not be touched without incurring a penalty.

• Proper Course now makes it clear there may be multiple options for a proper course by stating that a proper course is “A course a boat would choose in order to sail the course and finish as soon as possible…”

OTHER CHANGES:

• The penalty for a violation of Fundamental Rule 2, Fair Sailing, cannot be excluded from a series score.

• New Fundamental Rule 5 makes it explicit that the RRS apply to the organizing authority, race committee, and other race officials.

• RRS 16.2 (Altering Course) has been revised to read: On a beat to windward when a port-tack boat is keeping clear by sailing to pass to leeward of a starboard-tack boat, the starboardtack boat shall not “bear away” if as a result the port-tack boat must change course immediately to continue keeping clear. The wording “bear away” is an update from the previous language “change course.”

• RRS 42.3(c) now allows pumping on a beat for boats that can plane upwind, one pump per wave.

These modifications provide important clarity for racers, committees, and judges. Find more details in the full rule book at sailing.org, and in the December 2020 issue of 48° North.
