48° NORTH TOP 25 With a mix of distance and around-the-buoy races, as well as single-race events and multi-race regattas, the qualifying races for 48° North’s Top 25 are a good representation of Pacific Northwest racing. Scoring is on a percentage basis depending on the size of the class: 0% (did not finish) to 100% (first in class), where the event score = (finishers – position + 1) / finishers. Overall scores are an average of a boat’s best five finishes. There is no minimum number of races required to qualify. Multi-race events (like the South Sound Series) are scored as single events. We are adding four new races to the qualifying list for 2020, an offshore race out of Oregon, a single-day mid-distance event in the central Sound, a roundthe-buoy regatta in British Columbia, and a distance-andbuoy regatta in Seattle. BENEFIT REGATTAS — GO SAILING. DO GOOD. Around the Pacific Northwest, benefit regattas have shown to be an area of growth in sailboat racing. These events take various forms and raise money in different ways, but all deliver awareness and financial support to their beneficiaries. Between their objective value to the world and the fact that they can be a terrific motivator to get more and different people on the water, benefit regattas have become an important part of the racing calendar. Sloop Tavern Yacht Club’s Carol Pearl Blakely Rock Benefit draws upwards of 100 boats each year and has made five-figure donations to organizations that support STEM education for girls and more recently to the MY SAIL (Multihull Youth Sailing Organization), and it’s just plain fun. The Leukemia Cup Regattas are well known and well respected, and now boast more than $70 million raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society worldwide; there's a new Leukemia Cup Regatta in Vancouver, BC, in May 2020 to complement Seattle's Leukemia Cup in June. And how about our home-grown Pink Boat Regatta crew, now running three regattas in late summer (Bellingham, Seattle, and Tacoma). Thanks to the generosity of the sailing community and our affiliates, Pink Boat was able to donate more than $100,000 to support Breast Cancer Research last year. Heading into the fall season, consider joining Shilshole Bay Yacht Club’s TransPuget, which helps support Footloose Disabled Sailing; and Seattle Singles Yacht Club’s Northwest Harvest Benefit where proceeds go to the Northwest Harvest Food Bank.
