ARCHITECTURE IS THE REFLECTION OF CULTURE AND THE BEST NARRATOR OF THE CITY.

As I see it, while stories are the content of culture, architecture and cities are the carriers of culture; buildings embody a region’s past, present and future. Consequently, my passion is to develop a city where people can roam and “read” the city’s story and foresee future expectations captured in spatial design.

During both my undergraduate and graduate education I developed these sensibilities and learned how to use space to express vision while also establishing benchmarks for architectural planning. By learning and applying theory to spatial structures, I was able to blend aesthetics with practicalities. In this way, a city’s birth, growth and history are concretized. Drawing on this rich preparation, since graduating from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts with my Master’s degree, I have worked independently on design projects. Although this endeavor has proven challenging, it has also been deeply rewarding as I picture my design taking shape in a completed building. This work has also spurred a desire to advance my architectural training in order to continue to fuel my passion and vision.

02-1 REASONS FOR SITE SELECTION

1) The most important reason:Flood phenomenon appeared in a higher frequency. Flood depends on rainfall intensity,rainfall, rainfall time, preci-pitation phase (rain or snow)and the pre-conditions of the river and its drainage basin (such as the presence of snow/ice, soil characteristics a-nd status (freezing or not, saturation).Humidity, snow/ice melting speed and time, urbanization, (whether built dikes, dams and reservoirs). Human occupation of floodplains and lack of flood prevention contingency plans have increased the potential for damage.

How do people get along with [SAFE FLOOD] by urban planning?

What is the relationship between humans and nature?

Symbiosis? Or conflicting with each other? Or is it dependent?

Historically, Melbourne has experienced many large and small floods, and the water level is relatively high throughout these years. But Melbourne is the city that is extremely short of water during certain periods of time. The government always talks about how to manage floods. But from another perspective, whether the public really hates floods, or safe floods.

We will move the time to 2050, assuming that Melbourne is already a city under flood. We will discuss the topic about how do we design a reasonable urban network while balancing stormwater management and normal urban functions.

At the same time, with the problem of population explosion in 2050, how will we rationally arrange and design high-density floating houses?

We should pay attention to those points in our design.

Melbourne:is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia and Oceania.Abbotsford:is a suburb of Melbourne,Australia,2 km northeast of Melbourne's Central Business District. Its local government area is the City of Yarra. At the 2016 census, Abbotsford had a population of 8,184.

According to projections, Melbourne is experiencing its greatest population boom since the post-War era.

By 2050, the percentage of Melbourne’s population aged over 65 is projected to increase from13.8 percent to 20.5 per cent. This demographic change will present significant challenges for community services and infrastructure. .

In the year 2050, at least 150 million people worldwide will become climate refugees due to global warming. Scientists warn that when global temperatures rise by 2-3 degrees, the ice sheets on Greenland will all melt, and the global sea level will rise by at least 7 meters. Metropolises including Melboune will be flooded.

The main reason for global warming is that a large amount of fossil fuels (such as coal, oil, etc.) have used originally by human and emitted a large amount of greenhouse gases such as CO2 during nearly a century.

Through simulation on these three points, it could be found that the reason why these three points could become initial spill point of flood is that mountain massif in the east side is higher than urban altitude at these three points. Therefore, the moment water is rising, flood will flow backward into the city from these three points.

On the basis of research on superior planning and global climate, it could be clearly seen that in the area of Abbotsford, Melbourne, it may completely occur a flood in 2050 which has never met before.

Under this circumstance, I have made analysis on geographic basic data for this area and conducted simulation on flood in this area. According to results of simulation, I found that in the area of Abbotsford, there were three points which occurred phenomenon of water rising at the utmost beginning. So this has drawn my curiosity, I thus have conducted detailed geographic analysis and simulation for these three points.

Combining global climate condit ions and historical research in the Abbotsford, I try to make a hypothesis that in 2050 there will be a one-in-a-year flood in the Abbotsford. Based on this assumption, I hope to do the researchi about how to create a safe flood.

Through researching history, I found that although people in Abbotsford have been suffering from floods, they have also derived a way to get along with the flooding.

Avoca, Loddon and Wimmera Rivers: Towns throughout Western Victoria and along the Great Ocean Road are pummelled with heavy rainfall. The Great Ocean Road was closed after floods trigger more than 150 landslides and rockfalls. A farmer dies in the storm.

And this group of formulas were used to further conduct flood prediction for different incidents in future with amount of water overflowing, year and flood intensity taken as variables. At final, I chose predicted path in 2050 to conduct verification for formulas.

Based on fabric path resulted from this process, I took advantage of grasshopper to conduct simulation for it, and further extract a group of optimal path formulas on the basis of overall design logic.

Whereupon, I started to help flood in the area of Abbotsford to find a possible path.

I divided the experiment into two kinds of experimental subjects --- oat with slime mold and oat without slime mold, and took three spill points which concluded from flood research as the point to place oat with slime mode. Then the monastery with great square and vacant factory zone could be set up as our first defensive line in releasing flood waters, oat without slime mold could be put on the position of these two locations in order to attempt to seek one possible movement path of flood.

Benjamin in his book, Paris, the Capital of 19th Century discussed the process of commercial society evolution in Paris at that time with concept of the Galerie Colbert.

I have been always attracted by it.

Therefore, when the Redtory which I am familiar with was in face of dismantlement, I introduced into concept of the Ship of Theseus and tried to make some relative discussion on society and industry background in the form of architecture.

In this project, I tried to tell this story in a way which architecture is integrated with culture.

The story derived from dismantlement of the Redtory, while I attempted to use an interview to Mr. A an virtual character --- the future boss of the Redtory for permeating into interpretation on possible changes of architecture in future 20 years in order to discuss contemporary Chinese art exhibition based on commercial character and system behind it, and what's more discuss relationships between publicity and commercial character.

The government at that time was in favor of it and made a promise to us that it would not be changed for ten years.

However, in 2012, due to regeneration in the government, overall planning in Guangzhou was changed, the Redtory was in face of being removed at that time.

Later, it will have built a symbolic redtory artistic tower in 2036. Design inspiration comes from the Third International Tower Ta t l i n a n d t h e C a n t o n Tower whose design stands for Guangzhou and also symbolizes spiral artistic victory.

Therefore, when news was heard that it would be removed at that time, you had made great efforts to preserve it?

( He started to feel a little upset): Yes, we made many compromises, because 2019 was the extreme year committed by the government, we found a p oi nt that could jointly survived with commerce in the process of struggle and tried to preserve the Redtory.

How should we face this situation?

Are we turning such villages into new "villages in the city" and depriving them from their original way of life and culture? Or should we completely replace the old buildings with new functions, such as shopping malls, hotels or others, in order to blindly follow with the modern lifestyle?

Villages compatible with different lifestyles

Yantang handicrafts village, aimed at contradiction between original residents and new liifestyle and cultural problems accoutered in the process of transformation from marginal village into urban village due to urban development, provides a possible solution.

After research on development of Guangzhou village, handicrafts historical development and lifestyle of contemporary youngsters, designers tried to find a joint point among three Parties, and explored new existent form for Yantang village.

Villages in Guangzhou, compared with other areas, are distributed by scattered villages which are connected by surnames as final form. The association brought by such surname conforms to contents on spatial form required by their handicrafts. The moment the contemporary youngsters pay more and more attentions to native culture, the problem that continues to be discussed is how to let these villages try best to maintain its original living status and at the same time generate a new lifestyle.

In Yantang village, villagers and local handicraftsmen have their own fixed activities every day, and visitors also have a certain type of activities. Through local research, I conducted interviews and questionnaire survey for three groups, namely villagers, visitors and local handicraftsmen separately from the prospective of public space and activities in order to obtain feeling and demand for space from different groups of people.

Based on expectation from villagers, I also analyzed types of daily leisure activities for young people who are located in Guangzhou. And on the basis of it, I could provide a relative clear reference and evidence for later design.

On the basis of aforementioned research and analysis, the design tactics that I have selected is to take the original ancient village as different spaces of a building, cut an activity space in order to implant it into the original ancient village, build activity function with nature of inter-linkage in gap of the original buildings, and connect original renovated space by such activity space so that overall building complex exists as an architecture. Such design can not only maintain original living habits and activities for villagers, but also have more capacity to accommodate new lifestyles.

01-1 THE BASIC INFORMATION OF DUNHUANG Dunhuang is located at the western part of Jiuquan Area, Gansu province, 92°13′-95°30 ′ E, 39°53 ′ -41°35 ′ N with average altitude less than 1,200 meters. The land area of the city of Dunhuang is 31,200 square kilometers in which the oasis is about 1,400 square kilometers, accounting for 4.5% of total areas. The whole city is surrounded by the Gobi Desert, therefore, it is called as "Gobi Oasis".

In the northwest, there are two extreme climates---the high temperture in summer and the cold weather in the winter. But these two climates have been well resolved through cave dwellings and grape drying rooms.

Base on the location, its architectural form is dominated by courtyards and slope buildings.

Doors and windows are mostly arched. The whole wall is made of rammed earth wall as the main process and practice, and the color is mainly yellow like ground ove there.

Dunhaung City is a famous city known as an Oasis on the original Silk Road; it served as a cultural and religious crossroad. The city is also famous for the Mogao Grottoes, which are a system of 492 interlinked Buddhist cells and cave sanctuaries.

My primary goal in this project, then, was to minimize the ego of the designer and focus more completely on the architectural design as a carrier of culture. I wanted the work to demonstrate respect for the local culture and help portray the deeper story embedded in the surroundings.

Since I conceptually planned the project of Dunhuang Art Museum as well as managed its artist studio group, I was deeply committed to highlighting the rich heritage of this area.

Drawing on Aldo Rossi views in Architecture of City, which suggest that an architect need to provide a solution infusing culture, locality and spirit, I wanted to propose plans that captured the cultural, physical and spiritual character of this area so that the project would serve as a model for how to approach similar sites.

Therefore, there was both an immediate and practical architectural need as well as a larger methodological question.

Dunhuang has its own highly-rich history. From the beginning of the northern Liang dynasty to the western Xia Empire, it has spanned more than one thousand years of history. Dunhuang has experienced prosperity for the Silk Road and resplendence at the peak of multi-cultural collection, and also have felt sadness for decline due to evolution of business model and extremity of geological environment. Current Dunhuang has been developing into the top tourism city in China by its profound cultural history.

But due to limitation on weather and climate in Dunhuang and local construction technology, modern rammed loam technology after industrialized improvement has not been fully approved. Thus, on technological design of Dunhuang Art City, the local construction Party and I, on the basis of construction technology of modern rammed earth walls and in combination of thermal insulation technology, tried to make an attempt on building a construction technology which is convenient to construction and is suitable for current situation of Dunhuang.

Mogao Caves' visiting circulation use a series of different stairs to connect 489 caves with murals and sculptures. During the process of visiting, people will experience the time changes and artistic precipitation of Mogao Grottoes through the stairs.

The annual average temperature is 9.4 ℃ with monthly average highest temperature of 24.9 ℃ (July) and monthly average lowest temperature of -9.3 ℃ (January). The extreme highest temperature is 43.6 ℃ ,while the lowest temperature is -28.5 ℃ . It lies in the arid climate zone with warm temperature with annual average rainfall precipitation of 39.9 millimeters, evaporation of 2,490millimeters and annual average frost-free period of 142 days.

I n t h e p ro c e s s o f d e s i g n , I continuously deduced physical relationship and internal circulation of the architecture in the form of model. At the same time, I could also discuss rammed earth wall and other systems by the way of software simulation, for example, presented sensory effect s af ter combination of structure, device system and interior, etc..

How the Art Museum, as an pilot project of new rammed loam technology in planning, besides design concept, to make such new rammed loam technology adapt to sub-systems of the architecture is the biggest difficulty for its architecture.

So far, design proposal of the Art Museum, which has gradually been putting into practice as the major cultural project in Dunhuang, has been approved by Party A and the government.

[SKY LADDER] INSTALLATION IN 2014 MILANO DESIGN WEEK In addition to “Roaming in the city” on the basis of construction theory and project implementation, I also gained some opportunities of art expansion to enrich the demands for aesthetics and creativity. For example, in 2014, led by Prof. Sherman Lin, I assisted in designing and site layout for the main device [SKY LADDER] by University of Milan during Milan Design Week. We used Chinese bamboo ladders as the main design elements, and the transparent acrylic as the connection between ladders, so as to discuss the subtle relationship between Chinese traditional culture and international mainstream values.I was the designer and implementer involved in the project. Hence, I learned about the artistic expression of space and architecture. This device was unanimously recognized accepted in University of THE INSTALLATION IN MILANOand DESIGN WEEK 2014, ITALY Milan during Milan Design Week.
