Creator Imitator?

e have fallen into a society that places little importance on ethics and integrity, most noticeable when it comes to the plagiarism of art, music, language, ideas, and research.

It’s a plague of ‘quick actions’ for making a ‘fast buck’ or becoming recognized for stolen achievement. Such egregious activities can be found at the top echelon of Ivy League Universities down to struggling street artists (including many in between). Too often, self-absorbed imposters utilize faulty rationalizations as excuses when they embark on the practice of copying the creative genius or mental clarity of others. Frequently unnoticed, when exposed, excuses of ignorance are claimed, or forgiveness is extended under an umbrella of protection and a plethora of misunderstandings of what it means when someone’s intellectual property is presented as one’s own; as a result, these forms of violating personal, educational, and business trust remain rampant.

It was once said (citation remains unclear), “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.”

Such a polite description would seem jovial and good-spirited.

Yet, in truth, it is a violation of the creator’s effort, resources, and instincts, including the utter disrespect for ambition and wellearned status by the originator.

Unmasking the violators comes in a variety of methods, one of which is when the blatant redesign or reorganization of ideas, words, images, or a concept’s essence is noticed by an audience who, with good intentions, bring the fact to the original artist, designer, musician, researcher, author, or other person who possesses evidence of ownership. Taking into account that, at times, similarities occur within the scope of creative license and can be attributed to chance, when the number of reports specific to acts of ‘taking’ is in unison, and the descriptions of violation(s) are identical, it is easily determined when a work is being copied, forged or reproduced with slight, but obviously modifications.

Arguably, the imitator intended to benefit from the prestige and profit that could possibly follow.

You might ask why we are witnessing an increase in cases of designs, concepts, words, or techniques being taken with little done to stop the theft of creative or intellectual property rights

without authorization. The answer is rather obvious: unless a party can bankroll the legal machine necessary to spend years in court and is willing to gamble on the judgment of a court (and from what we have witnessed, judges can be numbingly naïve), often a would-be defendant skips off unpunished and will probably continue practicing the same lack of morality and decency.

An example of a design used across many products, albeit the original was exclusive, you may notice the luxury car and SUV market is flooded with imitation. Land Rover, an icon of off-road superiority, has always boasted its unique details and beauty, but during the past couple of decades, some auto manufacturers have ‘ripped-off’ styling points and features that have many mistaking an American car company’s vehicle as the ultra-luxe benchmark the Rover brand represents.

The issue runs deeper; images of historical figures, photos, logos, and even publications are being copied with the intention of cashing in on similarities, down to minor details, that are identifiable not just by owners of the products or services but also by their clients or customers.

Creative brilliance faces a bludgeoning of imitators who wholly disregard the basic tenets of decency and authentic competition.

It takes time and energy to design and build something others see as valuable and desirable; conversely, it is relatively effortless to wash, rinse, and repeat what others put effort into starting and continuously perfecting and promoting its growth.

Throughout history, the public has indulged artists, inventors, and researchers who discover ‘one-of-a-kind’ ideas, concepts, and products, watching them run a course of longevity because these creatives understand that success comes from evaluating, evolving, and elevating reliability and performance. At the same time, the losers fall into a rut of repetition because their faulty interpretation of a great idea lacks the essential components only the originator would know. As a result, the underlying structure and longterm plan of the concept remain hidden until executed. Once a significant change or improvement is made by the originator to their work, violators are left to act quickly, only to be exposed when they attempt to reproduce the new idea and imitate it into their work.

With this understanding, it’s easy to determine the creators from the imitators; keep your eyes open as well as your mind. H

Everything You Need To Know About Oysters, But Never Asked

T

hey are one of the most vital inhabitants of the ocean; the bivalve mollusk with an odd shape and rough exterior thrives in both saltwater and in sea environments where brackish water occurs; the combination of fresh and saltwater usually found in coves and estuaries.

Oysters grow in clusters attached to rocks, abandoned boat hulls, discarded shells, or almost any hard submerged surface. Their attachment to objects allows them to create a formation resembling a durable reef that attracts and provides shelter for fish, crustaceans,

and marine vegetation.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), an oyster’s life begins as free-floating larvae, tiny, swimming creatures. Before long, they settle down and attach to a solid surface where they will grow for the rest of their lives. But they have a crucial role in the life-cycles of other sea life. Oyster reefs create essential habitats for hundreds of species. Organisms like mussels, barnacles, and sea anemones settle on them, creating abundant food sources for commercially valuable fish. Oyster reefs provide habitats to forage fish, invertebrates, and other shellfish. They also provide a safe nursery for commercially valuable

species, including the following: anchovies, blue crab, croaker, flounder, herring, menhaden, shrimp, silver perch, Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, spot, stone crab, and a New England angler’s favorite, striped bass.

Oysters perform a valuable service to the world’s ecosystem and global health; they are recognized for their ability to filter impurities from the water surrounding them. It’s estimated that a single oyster can clean up to 50 gallons daily. Additionally, their reefs perform as a barrier from storm surges, preventing erosion along shorelines.

Ongoing threats to oysters mean that unless deliberate efforts are made to protect and restore them, we are in

danger of losing the many benefits they provide. When oyster reefs are restricted to harvesting their meat, the overall function of the reefs becomes degraded. When they are restored and managed as a sustainable resource, oyster reefs and the habitat they provide can contribute billions of dollars in value to the economy.

NOAA points out some interesting historical information about the condition of these mollusks and the efforts to protect them, citing oysters were once plentiful in coastal areas throughout the country. In 1607, when Captain John Smith explored the Chesapeake Bay, there were oyster reefs so prominent that ships had to navigate around them. When Henry Hudson arrived in New York in 1609, the harbor’s oyster reefs were the largest source of oysters worldwide.

Today, we find ourselves at a crossroads.

With centuries of advancements in technology, extensive poisoning of the sea with trash, man-made chemical pollution, and massive amounts of dredging and overfishing, the number of oysters protecting the waterways is dwindling. Thankfully, it’s not too late with advancements taking place to curb further damage.

The first is to protect oyster habitats and direct efforts to restore them. The Office of Habitat Conservation, NOAA’s Restoration Center, is both funding and offering technical assistance around the country. Local organizations, universities, and community-based stakeholders are getting the word out by taking action and creating base structures that allow the formation of oyster reefs, planting seagrass, and starting oyster hatcheries for seeding.

Plus, and this is paramount, government agencies and organizations are restricting some types of harvesting and stopping the destruction of oyster reefs.

Local groups play a vital role in the monitoring of water quality and the effects of groundwater run-off and erosion, directly related to industry, farming, and recreational properties that lower the salt content and oxygen levels while increasing nitrogen and phosphorus, which results in copious amounts of algae. With this dilemma, oysters experience a slowdown of growth and a decrease in the calcification of their protective shells, irregular

Another problem is the destruction of seagrass, which results from sunlight being blocked to the submerged plants.

HELP IS ON THE WAY We spotlight oysters this holiday season because they will be arriving at many tables, and nothing exudes more cheer and abundance than a family’s favorite oyster recipe. At the same time, we wish to bring attention to a global effort that spans a significant list of international partners who, for the last eight years, have sent representatives to events that are committed to the restoration and preservation of the oyster population and its role in returning ocean health.

In a press release received from the highly acclaimed author and the North/ South American Chapter Co-Director of the World Oyster Society, Kahren Dowcett, the 9th International Oyster Symposium (IOS) of the World Oyster Society (WOS), the world’s only conference devoted solely to oyster science, industry, and culture, will be held in Portland, Maine, in October 2026. It is the world’s only conference dedicated solely to oyster science, industry, and culture.

The prestige of having the upcoming event on the East Coast adds the U.S. (its second time) to the list of previous presenters, including Japan, Taiwan, China, Tasmania, Vietnam, and Wales.

The importance of this event being held on our shores transcends influencing the U.S. economy, invigorating the protection of the resource, creating awareness of the benefits oysters offer, and exchanging ideas and developments in the business of sustainable aquaculture.

What also adds to the excitement of the upcoming event is that it won’t be returning to North America until 2036.

According to Dowcett, “The planning team has begun to organize with local, national, and international partners to organize programs that will enhance an already dynamic dialogue and advance the exchange of ideas by attracting global representatives from academia, conservation, governments, business, and cultural experts. The three-day event will not only inspire but include new information, practices, ongoing projects, and research relative to the oyster and its place in ocean preservation and human affairs worldwide.”

The World Oyster Society has approximately 1,000 members from 50 countries and is growing. With a commitment to advancing oyster literacy and fueling the oyster ‘renaissance,’ this type of event will raise awareness and interest from almost everyone concerned about environmental and foodsourcing issues.

Dr. Katusyoshi Mori, President Emeritus of the World Oyster Society and Japan’s Oyster Research Institute, and Professor Emeritus of Tohoku University, says, “This will be an important moment again in the U.S., bringing together all who have linkage to oyster science and industry who are looking for a more holistic view of oysters within the planet’s ecosystem. This exchange is significant now as we work to address the issues arising from climate change. Let the sea live, and let us live with the sea.”

The Foundry Artists Association was created over four decades ago by a community of artists who opened their I-95 Foundry Building Studios in downtown Providence to the public during the holiday season. In 1995, when the original Foundry Building was converted to office space, its artists moved to studios throughout the region. The Show found its new home in the Pawtucket Armory building, a castle-like landmark built in 1894, which formerly housed the Rhode Island National Guard.

The Foundry Artists Show now takes place in the beautifully renovated former drill hall, and it continues to provide a unique opportunity to experience one of the area’s most significant resources—its artists.

During its long tenure, this popular New England holiday tradition has offered patrons the opportunity to view and purchase distinctive, high-quality work from artists selected to participate through jury selection. Categories of fine art and craft range from art glass to wood and include painting, sculpture, metal, fiber, mixed media, jewelry, ceramics, and photography.

Under the Knife Who Do You Trust?

y reasoning for the headline was to attract attention. Still, today’s business isn’t just to discuss cosmetic surgical procedures but to focus on those who perform them. With an explosion of practitioners, many who claim to be specialists or experts in all treatment modalities and use injectables—Botox, the most famous of them all—along with a long list of fillers that plump, hide, and beautify aging skin, there remains subjective philosophies related to the scope of interventions and treatment protocols.

Not all practitioners follow the same guidelines for what a finished effort should look like; much of the work is based upon preferences and a spectrum from very conservative and subtle improvements to those willing to do whatever a patient demands.

If you are in doubt about such a claim, look at many of the unrecognized celebrities who went too far!

We’ve all heard the horrific stories of procedures gone wrong, both in foreign countries and here at home, sometimes resulting in disfigurement, even death. For this reason, there needs to be some clarification when it comes to choosing who you can trust with your face and body, or at least gain insight into the differences and credentials beauty-enhancing professionals must hold.

Currently, medical doctors are grouped into specific specialties, such as plastic surgery, but some subspecialties are specific within the category. Often, these doctors perform a variety of cosmetic and health-related services.

Others specialize in dermatology and dentistry, along with a massive number of newcomers, many of whom have advanced nursing degrees accompanied by special training; these clinicians are limited to services that include injectables, lasers, and other non-surgical facial and physical improvement options.

Many, if not all, are qualified and licensed, but as with all professions, there will be a few outliers who don’t always abide by the standards set for safety and integrity. In researching this

topic, we learned that one medical spa was found diluting vials of Botox. As unimaginable as it sounds, when the patient addressed the nurse, she made up an excuse that didn’t suffice for the actions. Patient beware.

With the following information, the objective is to make you a better consumer and increase your chances of satisfaction. As with all purchases, it’s necessary to do research, ask questions, and, when possible, get a referral. Most importantly, finding common ground with your provider and discussing the results you expect ahead of time helps build a positive rapport with them and meet your objectives.

PLASTIC SURGEONS – THEY DO IT ALL Medical doctors who perform procedures that include abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), liposuction (excess fat removal), rhytidectomy (facelift & neck tightening), breast augmentation or reduction (self-explanatory), blepharoplasty (eye lift), rhinoplasty, (commonly referred to as a ‘nose job’), gluteal augmentation (butt lift), and newfound techniques involving male and female genitalia.

FACIAL PLASTIC SURGEONS – SPECIALIZATION Specialized medical doctors who strictly work on necks and faces, with many focusing their practice on both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

DERMATOLOGIST – HEALTH-BASED & NON-SURGICAL COSMETIC INTERVENTIONS Cosmetic dermatology is a form of aesthetic medicine focusing on cosmetic improvements. While they are medical doctors, they’re not trained or qualified to perform rhytidectomies. Often providing both health-related services and beautification treatments, they sometimes work in medical spa settings and perform services while also providing oversight of technicians who perform procedures that don’t require

advanced degrees or higher-level licensing.

Services include Botox and similar injections to relax facial muscles, dermal fillers, exfoliation (microdermabrasion and chemical peels), laser skin treatments, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy (management of many facial imperfections), laser hair removal, tattoo removal, and micro-needling.

DENTIST – INJECTABLES Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) have specialized training in facial anatomy and function. In some states, they are allowed to inject Botox and fillers.

LICENSED INJECTORS While state requirements vary, most require an injector to be a Nurse Practitioner or Registered Nurse who has additional training and credentials for cosmetic chemical injections, laser treatments, and non-surgical improvements.

Once you’ve decided to freshen your look or make significant changes or improvements, you’ll want to consider the amount of time you can allocate to such services; choosing a location at a distance so no one learns of your transformation is often preferred while others opt for providers closer to home or work for easy access. As for budgeting, it’s wise to stay away from anyone selling price rather than results; the best option is to pay for outstanding service and not face (unintended pun) regret. Prior to making an appointment, you’ll also want to visit a couple of websites where you’ll see some ‘before and after’ photos (if you decide, be sure they aren’t what is known as ‘stock photos,’ confirm ahead of time that your provider did the work they promote.

Cosmetic work isn’t like comparing cars, but it isn’t far off.

Unlike deciding whether to buy gas or electric or domestic or foreign, it’s more of a decision when choosing from a Lamborghini, Range Rover, Mercedes Benz, or BMW. They’re all good, but some are better than others, and often, price matters.

During your search, look for Board Certified Doctors and Societies approved by the American Board of Medicine Specialties. It’s also a good idea to check for advanced training and certification for non-medical providers.

A red flag for anyone planning to have surgery is if a Doctor promotes themselves as a ‘Cosmetic Surgeon’ in place of the title ‘Plastic Surgeon.’ These individuals will not be board-certified and may have limited if any, specialized training in the field.

As with hiring any professional, ask them for the number of years they have been performing their specialized interventions and what they do, and see if that yields the best results.

The beauty industry is a multi-billion-dollar generator catering to our need for a youthful appearance. But be aware that once you start down this road, you’ll be joining an elite club dedicated to maintaining the ‘New You’ well into your senior years.

The Solo Living Movement: Its Benefits, Drawbacks, and Finding Contentment Alone

ohann Moolman is a sensible, serene elder gentleman in the town of Groot Marico, South Africa. In a short film on YouTube, Reflections of Life, the distinguished artist and former professor meditates on what it means to live alone, as he’s seen going about daily life and his creative pursuits around his home.1 “Being alone is one thing,” Moolman says. “But being lonely is an entirely different kettle of fish.”

Compared to life with his dogs, spending several months living amongst the masses of New York City was the loneliest he’d ever felt. Loneliness can happen anywhere, he says.

It’s a state of mind, an “empty, dark void” that he’s learned to live with rather than try to escape. A realist, he says he prefers to face it head-on and work with it, as we see him molding clay figurines.

He appears well-adjusted as he acknowledges he’s nearing the end of his life’s journey.

Moolman’s life of solitude represents an unrecognized, longstanding trend taking place in the U.S. and around the world.

LIVING SOLO In 2012, PBS News’ Ray Suarez spoke with sociologist Eric Klinenberg, Ph.D., author of the book Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone, published that year. Suarez noted that from 1950-2012, there was a more than 127 percent increase in the number of American adults living alone, going from 22 percent to over 50 percent during those 62 years. Today, some 28 percent of all U.S. households have just one occupant versus nine percent of households in 1950—a 211 percent spike.2 To Klinenberg, this is a transformative demographic shift and the largest of the last century, yet one which we’ve “failed to name or identify.” More of us are unmarried, he says, but more of us are choosing to live by ourselves and for longer periods, especially in major cities. And while singles are more likely to be socially engaged than their married counterparts, the elderly are more at risk for isolation without the suitable types of housing, which the U.S. hasn’t invested in.

In 2023, Klinenberg’s message was the same as The Hill’s Daniel de Visé. U.S. Census data still shows a rise in the number of single-person households, which Klinenberg historically attributes to women’s emergence in the workforce and bodily independence.

This rise coincides with a declining birth rate and an aging populace, making it easy to envision a future where there aren’t enough workers and resources to care for the nation’s eldest.3 About 13 percent of Americans now live alone, the vast majority aged 45 and over, many of which are retirement-age women, and marriages ending later in life, known as “grey divorce.”3 BENEFITS While humans are innately social creatures, there can be upsides to living alone.

The community-driven resource Solo Living, the first-of-itskind to provide support for people “living alone through choice

or circumstance,” highlights 10 ways living alone can afford greater autonomy over one’s lifestyle and life direction.4

Living alone gives a person liberty over things they might not otherwise have living with another person: eating, sleeping, entertainment, even climate control. This may come as a culture shock to a younger person just leaving the nest, or to a recent divorcee as they learn responsibility and self-reliance.

Solo Living says we shouldn’t underestimate the psychological impact of these perks.

Living alone enables us to explore our true selves and learn to become comfortable with our own company. It allows us to identify triggers for negative feelings and how best to counter them. Ultimately, we’re able to gain confidence in our values and limits and become better people.

PITFALLS The National Institutes on Aging states that social isolation and loneliness are linked to a host of negative health impacts and behaviors, including heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, weakened immunity, depression, anxiety, cognitive decline (abnormal memory loss, forgetfulness, aging), Alzheimer’s disease, and death.5 An analysis of 11 large cohort studies with 424,286 participants, for example, revealed that risk of negative cardiovascular outcomes can increase when living alone. Men living alone were found to be at higher risk for heart attack and cardiovascular-related death than women.6 Another large analysis examined the relationship between living alone and death from all causes in community-based adults. Eighteen cohort studies with 62,174 participants showed a high certainty for increased risk of death in those under age 65 but not over age 75. The researchers say the link may be causal but aren’t certain. They also say men may be more strongly impacted by associations and possibly effects than women.7 NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | DECEMBER 2024 | 39

Steven Cole, Ph.D., who investigates how loneliness impacts human physiology, notes that loneliness can lead to several disease pathways: it can accelerate plaque buildup in the arteries, it can promote cancer cell growth, and it can encourage brain inflammation, leading to Alzheimer’s disease. “Loneliness acts as a fertilizer for other diseases.”5 Living alone is considered a risk factor for social isolation and loneliness. But researchers say living alone may not necessarily raise one’s risk of negative health outcomes, since social isolation and loneliness are very nuanced self-perceptions and not based solely on a person’s social network.

Like Moolman said, there’s a difference between being alone and feeling lonely.

Researchers in Japan found that having a poor social network was associated with negative health outcomes in 400 older adults living in Tokyo, regardless of whether they lived alone.8 CONTENTMENT The key for people living alone seems to be staying socially engaged, having a purpose, and finding ways to cope with inevitable lonely feelings.5 Older adults, especially men, who live alone may need social support.

Moolman reminds us that no man is an island and that we all serve as reflections of each other for us to learn from. Still, “[i]t’s inevitable that your flame is going to dim.” When that happens, he’s learned to be kind to himself. He believes loneliness and depression go hand in hand.

Solo Living offers a guide for people new to living alone from the perspective of those living it.

Simon Day found himself living alone after a divorce. He says the novelty and initial invigorating feelings dissolved after several weeks when reality set in with the cold weather. The darker evenings led to dark thoughts and self-doubt about living alone. But gradually, with the help of counseling and medication, he’s been able to improve his mental health, open up to friends, and adopt a more realistic, positive outlook. By planning his days, doing anxiety exercises, and living in the moment, he’s found contentment living solo.

He advises embracing the highs and managing the lows for a successful solo living journey.

It’s Time To Level Up & Be Your Best Version

rustration, marked by a lack of interest in activities and experiences usually enjoyed, can be attributed to a host of negative feelings or having to adjust to life’s many sudden challenges.

Divorce, dissolving a relationship, the death of a partner or parent, or equally traumatic, the loss of a favored career can damage a fragile ego and deplete one’s self-worth. Yet, we can all expect to face the unexpected at one time or another.

Unfortunately, whether you get angry at others or internalize your fears, turning them into melancholy or a mild and temporary depressive state, adverse reactions to personal circumstances are detrimental to how you feel, lessening the ability to face struggles and achieve homeostasis; the inability to control emotions or understand what is going on ‘inside of you’ inhibits if not prevents you from presenting your best self.

A fundamental factor in the disconnect between finding satisfaction and roaming without purpose can be traced to feelings of powerlessness or difficulty in adapting to change or a new environment. Whether succumbing to repetitiveness and a monotonous existence or accepting ‘what is’ rather than creating change in your life are all selffulfilling behaviors that limit exposure to discovering new pathways leading to a rewarding and satisfactory life.

MORE IMPORTANT THAN MONEY IS TIME Hopefully, most people are aware that besides good health, time is an irreplaceable

and valuable commodity or treasure we possess. Unfortunately, and much too often, some are late to react, only to find they wasted years of their lives. Regretful, they learn that every minute that passes is gone forever and cannot be replenished. It is for this reason the most emotionally intelligent and keenly discerning people come to cherish each day while evaluating their level of enjoyment and satisfaction, leading to questions like: Did I make a difference in someone’s life? Have I made progress in my journey of personal development, and what did I learn today? Whether changes are large or small, your story is the one that matters because it will continue to evolve and expand your enjoyment.

Complacency is the devil that strips away self-assurance (confidence) and self-esteem (appreciation), which can be thought of as the ‘emotional DNA’ of personal development and coping strategies into adulthood. Handle your time as if it were currency, spend it wisely, and never waste it on people who take advantage of your resources and energy.

WHAT IS LEVELING UP? The short answer is to become better each day with an eye on expanding your personal assets that make you unique, engaging, and attractive. Think of it as climbing a stairway; each step you take lifts you to a new height of improvement of your mind, body, and appeal.

You mustn’t make the mistake of trying to overhaul your physical appearance or personality in the first week; remember,

it is the journey that yields measurable results. Throughout the process, you will find that by initiating subtle changes through mindful thinking, improved appearance, and, most importantly, living in the present, your progress will be reflected onto others, and you will begin to receive compliments as well as attention.

It is not a sprint; instead, view it as a marathon.

TAKING ACTION BY NOT ACTING If you want to ‘glow up,’ here are a few suggestions for updating your look and outlook.

Begin by listing your strengths and weaknesses; next to them, note what you can do to move those that are less satisfactory into the other column. For example, if you find that people seem rude, short, or use poor social skills with you, make it a point to be overtly polite, make eye contact, and hold yourself to a higher standard of behavior by asking if they are feeling okay or is something is bothering them? You will be surprised that taking the lead will make them uncomfortable, not you. Often, you will find them a bit startled that you did not react how they anticipated you would and begin to engage with a more acceptable demeanor.

Next, ask yourself: What are my strengths, and am I exercising them to my full benefit? Too often, we neglect to make use of traits others find appealing. A man once said, “Play host to the world, and they will respond.”

Basically, regardless of the difficulty, always take the high road, no one has

ever been viewed as crass, angry, or vicious for remaining silent when in a confrontation. Reflecting on an incident once shared, during a traffic stop, a driver was approached by a police officer who proceeded to his vehicle screaming, yelling, and making threats because he misinterpreted an event leading up to the incident. Being prepared, the motorist used silence unless asked a question, and in those cases, answered in a low voice, absent of confrontation, while maintaining eye contact. When the officer did not get the response he desired, he wrote a citation and said, “We’ll see about this.” An appeal followed, and a hearing was granted.

On the day of judgment, the officer didn’t show up; instead, a representative took his place. Before the motorist had a chance to take a seat, the clerk said they would not have to say a word and that the

case was to be dismissed. What was going to happen was the taping for the record. The narrative surrounding the traffic stop and the ‘unprofessional’ behavior that took place would have demonstrated who was in control.

Staying in control is power; being silent is a weapon.

TACTICS FOR IMPROVEMENT n Cease the negative voice in your head—everyone has one; replace it with a mantra that directs you to positivity n Recognize behaviors that stifled you as ‘outdated’ and replace them with actions that evoke confidence n Become disciplined; stop unhealthy behaviors: smoking, overdrinking adult beverages, sleeping late, isolating, reacting

rather than remaining stoic when challenged n Change your routine by taking a new route to familiar places and resist following the same steps or paths of comfort; change rarely happens when we know the result ahead of time n Read. Read. Read. Search for books, feeds, or podcasts that will share insight into modern-day social n Clean up, dress up, and present well.

Not only will you feel better—you will become memorable This is only a starting point; by practicing daily, you will create confidence and satisfaction that will improve your outlook and build strength plus stamina, which develops into assurance and endurance.

By leveling up, your self-awareness can’t help but improve; from here, you’ll notice changes in all of your personal interactions. H

MFA Late Nites The Hottest Party In Boston @ An Extraordinary Venue

ast month, we shared a feature with readers focusing on Harvard Art Museums ‘A Night At The Museum,’ which proved to be an incredible evening and a super story that followed.

Shortly after, we discovered another well-known institution, Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) is also in the game of producing a similar event; however, this one seemed to be fueled by steroids.

On Friday, October 25, lines began to form in front of the

museum at 7 p.m., quickly growing and weaving aimlessly onto Huntington Avenue from one side of the stately entrance for advanced ticket holders another wrapped around the building for those purchasing access the day of the event. As the temperature dropped, the enthusiasm elevated quickly; idle chatter, selfies, and, of course, anticipation indicated what could be expected in the great hall.

From the ‘galalike’ atmosphere created by dramatic lighting and the line of vehicles reminiscent of a red-carpet event, to legions of guests wearing highfashion looks— with some quite exotic—it was ostensibly ‘The Place To Be.’ With an austere staff that moved people into the building with military readiness, lines quickly diminished, and calm returned as revelers were pointed toward the entrance, where the main event was heating up.

As the minutes passed, the combination of music, live performances, dancing, and art began to shine, as did the comfort food offerings and libations found at multiple bars set up around the museum’s first level. In combination with the extended opening of the Gund Gallery Shop, Bookstore, and Vinyl Village, accompanied by ‘ArtMaking’ and a chance to sketch live figure models, the vibe grew as each minute passed.

The museum is a great spot for such an event; its vast collection allows for the unique experience of strolling through time while listening to contemporary music—it was uncharacteristic but distinctive and pleasurable.

After-hour ‘blow-outs’ as they are called, bring together a community and entice participation because of their infrequency, held only a few times per year.

Diversity was at an all-time high at this MFA Late Nites event, and that is great and wonderful to be part of; but, with tensions running high during the political season and everyone talking about inclusiveness and respect, there were some shortcomings.

Overall, the evening was tremendous, but the shade of noninclusiveness peeked out both subtly and overtly—many in attendance found it troubling and disrespectful by rolling their eyes and displaying faces of disappointment.

Here are the details: there was also a voter registration drive, with

assistants making their way through the crowd; it appeared innocuous until one of the feature performers took it upon himself to stop the music and encourage nonregistered voters to get signed up and in his words, “Register, only if you’re going to vote for the right candidate.” He continued with more—‘trash talk,’ calling notice to an unrealized theme of the event: a biased slant for a preferred candidate over another at a public institution. His actions not only tinged the pleasantry for many, but exposed his intolerance with whom he disagreed; it was an effort to stir up animosity within the crowd. His blatant attempt to combine a hidden agenda disguised by a ‘get-out-to-vote’ effort was principally used to divide people who were there to celebrate and accept their differences. His actions exposed his and the institution’s ideology by representation and allowance; such dishonesty is an unacceptable truth that lies under the surface and needs reform.

Stamina, Expression, & Commitment Creates A Masterful Performance At The Citizens Bank Opera House In Boston

oston Ballet’s “Fall Experience” opened the season on October 24, 2024, as a tribute to the late Michaela Mabinty DePrince, who passed a few months earlier. Described as a “gifted dancer” and “a voice of advocacy and a beacon of hope and kindness who inspired the dance community,” she was honored, while unbeknownst, her memory distilled a fiery passion and a resounding tenor that penetrated through historic music halls.

Her spirited presence laid the foundation for an epic evening of dedication, which clearly inspired dancers to perform one of the most profound productions ever produced by the company.

Entering its 61st season with the introduction of the “Fall Experience,” the Boston Ballet held nothing back! Indescribably poignant, as the curtain lifted, the company immediately captured the audience with moody lighting, a barren stage, and hypnotic themes. Following variations, equal to the first, likened to stones on a path leading to a prescribed destination, guests were delivered a visceral journey building to “The Seasons’ Canon,” which arrived after a short intermission. The trove of rhythmic dancers working to music like waves on the ocean, brought tears of connection, pride, and appreciation to all who witnessed human perfection. The ease and delicacy of the ensemble of 54 dancers in unison was unearthly precise.

The variations titled “Spring,” “Summer,” “Fall,” and “Winter” were performed with unimaginable accuracy; in light of this experience, there will be lingering pain by knowing nothing will ever compare to this memorable evening.

Upon reflection, the word ‘riveting’ comes to mind on the modality of emotions that flooded the audience on opening night; from the pin-drop silence—not an extraneous sound resonated—guests appeared as inspired as the performers, sitting with pent-up anticipation and unnerving focus, they watched as the music synced perfectly with the choreography of vibrant dancers serving as arrows to the heart; over and over again.

With critic’s opinions indicative of the hands on a clock, having many numbers to rest upon, it can be difficult for the public to decipher the intrinsic value of a production that is based on subjectivity and professional bias, which sometimes casts a shadow tilting towards a level of sophistication or knowledge that can’t speak to the sheer enjoyment that comes from dance when viewed by a large block of supporters which grows the organization.

This event did something ingenious and not often noticed; as guests left the theater, a hostess and camera person taped audience members’ reactions, which were later posted on social media.

Not startling by any means, the impromptu anecdotal reviews of the evening drew candid and unrehearsed comments that indeed measured the quality and satisfaction with the evening. Time and time again, the clips play with extraordinary accuracy, showing how impressed audience members felt about this first production.

Enough cannot be said about the Boston Ballet’s growth over the years, a direct result of the ambition and vision of its board, leadership, exquisitely talented choreographers, invincible dancers, and proud sponsors; in totality, this team effort for the 2024-2025 season has kick-off what will probably be remembered as the most magnificent programming ever conceived and performed.

We have been bestowed a gift of relevance that comes with what is best described as a ‘World-Class’ dance company. Now the season is underway, we urge you to make plans for one or all of the upcoming performances, including “The Nutcracker” (November 29-December 29), “Swan Lake” (February 27-March 16), and “Roméo Et Juliette” (May 29-June 8); you will not be disappointed. orld-renowned chef Jacques Pépin will return to the UMass Dartmouth campus on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, to celebrate his 89th birthday.

The event, hosted by the Claire T. Carney Library Associates, will feature a French-inspired four-course dinner, followed by a brief talk and book signing by Pépin.

Pépin was the personal chef to French heads of state and an ambassador for French cuisine. After moving to the United States in 1959, he worked at New York’s historic Le Pavillon restaurant. He served as director of research and development for the Howard Johnson Company, honing his skills in mass production, marketing, food chemistry, and American food tastes. An accomplished author with more than 30 books, Pépin also hosted a series on PBS with friend Julia Child, who earned a James Beard Foundation Award for Best National Cooking Show. He has received three honors from the French government, including the title of Chevalier de L’Ordre National de La Légion D’Honneur.

The December 17 event begins at 6 p.m. in the Marketplace on the UMass Dartmouth campus. Copies of Pépin’s books will be available for purchase. H
