This summer was a scorcher! The temperatures were certainly tropical, but summer in Northwest Arkansas really heated up with great parties and charity events for even better causes. We survived the warm weather of June, July and August and were able to support great causes like Youth Bridge, Beau Foundation, Kendrick Fincher Hydration Foundation and the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. The week of June 25 was a whirlwind at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers for the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G. With more than 100 professional female golfers in town for the tournament and several events packed into the week, the hot summer temperatures were no match for the tournament and its faithful fans.

The golf was great, but the community involvement and charitable support also stood out as it always does for this annual event.

Here are just a few highlights from the jam-packed week.

Tournament play kept fans on the edge of their seats all weekend but Ai Miyazato was the big winner with a whirlwind finish in the last round of the tournament. The Japan native took home the grand prize check of $300,000 after a grueling weekend on the course.

The Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter received donations totaling $25,000 from P&G and the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G. LPGA professional Morgan Pressel was on hand at the check presentation and received a personal tour of the Children’s Shelter facility.

Dove donated a total of $15,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Benton County and Fayetteville. More than 100 kids from the Boys and Girls Clubs enjoyed the Dove Kids Center on Friday with free ice cream, mini-golf and a bounce house.

The Pairings Party was held Tuesday evening to announce Pro-Am pairings. Before the festivities kicked off at the John Q. Hammons Center, First Tee of Northwest Arkansas hosted a VIP event to thank its sponsors. Magic Matt was on hand at the pre-party and Pairings Party to entertain guests with awesome tricks.

Goodwill Industries of Arkansas received a cash grant of $350,000 from the tournament in support of their POWER program, which provides job training and placement services to women in need in Benton and Washington Counties.

Current and former military service personnel were honored with free admission all week. On Sunday, military men and women were on hand to help ring in the upcoming Fourth of July holiday. World War II service men and women were honored in the closing ceremony for their service to our country.

Wednesday and Thursday were beautiful days for the official Pro-Am, which gave community leaders and golf fans a chance to play a round with LPGA professionals.

In a surprise announcement, the University of Arkansas women’s golf program received $100,000 from Stacy Lewis, a Razorback alum and LPGA professional. With the donation, Stacy became the first female athlete to become a member of the Razorback Century Club.

The Dove Kids Center was the perfect place to beat the heat all weekend long. On Saturday, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals mascot Strike stopped by to check out the tournament and pose for a few photos with fans.

Bringing together women from Northwest Arkansas’ business community, The Network of Executive Women’s Breakfast presented by Kimberly-Clark featured a panel of speakers including Walmart CEO, Mike Duke.

The Malibu Party Deck stayed packed all weekend long with fans looking for a fun time and of course we can’t forget the delicious Malibu drinks that were flowing. On Friday, P&G employees enjoyed the perfect views of the 17th green to cheer on their favorite players in the first round.

Down in the Arkansas Delta, about two hours west of Little Rock, winding country roads lead you to Marianna—a town with a population of just over 4,000 with what seems like nothing more than a few stoplights. But the true secret of Marianna lies in one of its unassuming neighborhoods, where Jones’ Bar-B-Q Diner sits in a white two-story building not unlike the neighboring houses.

his hole-in-the-wall restaurant seems like nothing much from the outside, but inside hangs one of the most prestigious awards in the culinary industry—the James Beard Foundation’s America’s Classics award. The America’s Classics award is given to restaurants with timeless appeal that are beloved for quality food that reflects character of their community. Jones’ is one of five restaurants across the country to receive the honor this year.

Jones’s Bar-B-Q was passed down to current owner James Harold Jones through his family from his 13

grandfather’s Uncle Joe, who started the family business more than 100 years ago. Since that time, Jones’ Bar-B-Q Diner has been a part of the Marianna community and serving mouthwatering barbecue from the current location since 1964. Because of this long history, the Southern Foodways Alliance believes Jones’ Bar-B-Q to be the oldest African-American owned restaurant in the South and possibly the nation. Though it wasn’t until the restaurant received the America’s Classics award in March that they started gaining nationwide attention and recognition. After hearing the buzz, we decided to travel the five hours from Fayetteville to check out this hidden Arkansas treasure.

The menu at Jones’ Bar-B-Q is so simple it’s impossible to go wrong. A barbecue sandwich with or without “slaw” (coleslaw) on white bread is the staple, but you can also order the pork by the

pound or the secret barbeque sauce to go. Both the sauce and slaw are top-secret recipes created by original owner Uncle Joe and haven’t been changed in the over 100 years.

We ordered our sandwiches with slaw and generously doused them with the vinegary sweet barbecue sauce. The crunch of the homemade slaw mixed with the flavorful smoked meat and sauce is truly a combination that can’t be duplicated. Trust us when we say it’s simply something you have got to try to understand. Our sandwiches were devoured quickly, but we couldn’t leave without some sauce and a couple pounds of meat to take home.

Beard Foundation award, people have flooded into Marianna eager to try their now famous barbecue.

The guest book at the front of the diner proves that distance is no measure for those looking for good barbeque, with records of guests traveling from as far away as New York and California, making the measly 300 miles between Northwest Arkansas and the Jones’ seem like nothing. Ten hours for a barbecue sandwich might sound crazy to some, but after you’ve given it a try, you’ll be asking yourself when you can go back for more.

James and Betty Jones can be found serving up sandwiches every day but Sunday, starting at 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., or until they sell out. The friendly couple chats with customers as they enjoy the sandwiches that have brought more traffic into this small town. Since the announcement of the James Visit Jones’ Bar-B-Q Diner at 219 W. Louisiana Street, off Ark. 1B in Marianna.

ick and Nancy Trammel are big supporters of not only the Northwest Arkansas community, but of course the University of Arkansas as well. The Trammels can be seen at every home Razorback game and come Homecoming time, you may even spot Dick on the field—where he proudly honors his past as a Razorback cheerleader. Dick and Nancy have a timeless style that can be dressed up or dressed down depending on the game. Here’s this classic couple’s take on their game day style: A Razorback red polo and khakis or dress pants are the basics of Dick’s sharp game day attire. What really makes him stand out is his Holtz hat—named after former coach Lou Holtz. “I wear it every ballgame and always get compliments,” Dick shares. His favorite accessory is his Razorback pin—a gift from longtime friend and jeweler, Bill Underwood.

Nancy enjoys dressing up for each and every game. She sticks to whites and blacks for her outfits and accessorizes with red to show her team spirit. “Instead of [wearing] red, I’ll wear white,” Nancy shares. “I usually throw a red sweater around my shoulders.”

Here’s how this couple puts together their signature style: Clay isn’t afraid to stand out on game day with red seersucker pants and a polo. But what really makes him stand out are his accessories. “He will wear anything that I ask him to wear basically,” shares Heather. “He’s not afraid to put on a hat or some sunglasses. He styles up his outfits with his shoes. He is definitely a shoe guy.”

Razorback Football 1 2 THOU SHALT PLAN THINE’S LIFE AROUND THE RAZORBACK FOOTBALL SCHEDULE. All big life events shall be put on hold in the fall, lest you wish to lose friends and family members. This includes, but is not limited to weddings, births, deaths, etc.

THOU SHALT DON YOUR FINEST REDS. Down here in the SEC, football is like a religion so it is only fitting that we dress like we’re going to church in our Sunday Best. Ladies, this means no heels under three inches and for the men, we expect nothing less than bow ties and seersucker.

THOU SHALT NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOR’S GOODS. Instead of wishing you had a tailgate as good as your neighbor’s, just throw one of your own. Over the top tailgating is a must in the fall.

THOU SHALT WALK THE WALK. You’ll hear the sirens before you see the buses—that’s your cue to head over to the Pit and greet the team coming into the stadium. Don’t miss this chance to cheer on the players one last time before they take the field.

THOU SHALT HONOR THY MASCOT. Visiting Tusk, the live Razorback mascot, on game days is highly encouraged for an extra dose of good luck.

THOU SHALT KNOW THY ALMA MATER. Being a Razorback fan is like being a member of a secret club sometimes—secret handshakes and hand motions included. Prepare for football season by brushing up on your band songs and the appropriate actions to go along with them.

THOU SHALT NEVER LEAVE A GAME EARLY. Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble when you’re an Arkansas Razorback fan. Especially when we’re a winning team. So, stick it out to the very end just so you can sing along and boast about our win.

THOU SHALT SHOW YOUR SCHOOL SPIRIT. Get hog wild every Friday night before a home game, as cheerleaders, band members and fans alike gather at the Greek Theatre.

These traditional pep rallies are the perfect place to get pumped up for the next day’s big game.

THOU SHALT NEVER SKIP A GAMEDAY. In the event that you are unable to make it to Donald W. Reynolds Stadium to watch the Razorbacks live, head to your nearest watering hole to take in the game. But remember: distance and weather are no excuses for die-

3 ½ (12 oz.) bottles of beer, chilled 1 (12 oz.) container frozen raspberry lemonade concentrate, thawed ½ cup vodka

This seasonal beer by New Belgium is known as the cornucopia of beers because of the five hops and four malts packed into the bottle.

A slightly fruity but not overpowering taste will leave you wanting more long after football season has past. So, stock up now before you can’t find it for another year.

Headed to a BYOB? Buy a case of these minis and sip in style.

Every classy lady loves a fabulous drink and Sofia Minis are the chicest way to toast.

These tiny little cans of bubbly are perfect for an impromptu tailgate or victory celebration after a big win.

1 large lime wedge 1 ½ oz. vodka 4 oz. tomato juice 4 dashes Worcestershire 2 dashes Tabasco sauce 2 dashes celery salt 1 dash freshly ground cracked pepper 1/8 teaspoon horseradish Green olive, for garnish Pearl onion, for garnish Sliced jalapeno, for garnish Shrimp, for garnish Celery stick, for garnish

6 oz. silver tequila 2 oz. triple sec 8 oz. frozen sliced strawberries in syrup 4 oz. frozen limeade concentrate

Blend all ingredients until smooth.

Pour into sealable container and freeze overnight or until firm.

To serve, stir the concoction until it’s a slushy drink. (Run warm water over sealed container if necessary.)

Sugar the rims of your margarita glasses and garnish with a fresh strawberry.

Stir together all ingredients. Serve over ice. Garnish with lime slices and frozen or fresh raspberries.

Liven up your game day with these libations.

Run the lime wedge around the rim of the glass to dampen before coating with celery salt. Add first seven ingredients in the glass, squeezing the lime wedge into the glass and mix together.

Add the green olive, shrimp, onion and sliced jalapeno on a toothpick.

Place celery stick in glass and enjoy.

FOOTBALL SEASON MUFFULETTAS You may use round sandwich buns instead of a bread loaf to make individual muffulettas.

1½ cups pimento-stuffed olives, drained and finely chopped 1 cup pitted black olives, drained and finely chopped 1 rib celery, finely chopped 6 garlic cloves, minced 1/3 cup olive oil 1/3 cup vinegar 2 to 3 tablespoons butter, softened 1 or 2 loaves fresh bread, cut into halves horizontally 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 4 ounces ham, thinly sliced 4 ounces turkey, thinly sliced 4 ounces Genoa salami, thinly sliced 6 slices provolone cheese 6 slices mozzarella cheese ½ cup (2 ounces) shredded Cheddar cheese photo courtesy of Southern Living Magazine

Combine the pimento-stuffed olives, black olives, celery, garlic, olive oil and vinegar in a bowl and mix well. Chill, covered, for 8 hours or overnight. Spread the butter over half of each loaf and sprinkle evenly with the Italian seasoning. Top the Italian seasoning with the olive mixture. Layer the ham, turkey, salami, provolone cheese, mozzarella cheese and Cheddar cheese over the olive mixture. Top with the remaining bread halves and wrap tightly in foil. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted. Remove the foil and place the loaf on a cutting board. Slice the loaf into individual sandwiches. Store any remaining olive mixture in the refrigerator for up to a week. MAKES 6 to 8 SERVINGS. 37

TAILGATE CORN BREAD SALAD 1 package corn bread mix 1 (14-ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained ½ cup picante sauce 2 cups sour cream ½ cup mayonnaise 1 small purple onion, chopped 1 small green bell pepper, chopped 1 (3-ounce) can chopped black olives 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese

Prepare the corn bread mix and bake according the package directions. Cool and break into pieces in a large bowl. Combine the corn, picante sauce, sour cream, mayonnaise, onion, bell pepper, olives and cheese in a bowl and mix as well. Fold into the corn bread. Chill, covered, until cold. MAKES 12 SERVINGS

GAME DAY CHEESE DIP 2 cups (8 ounces) finely shredded cheddar cheese 1½ cups (6 ounces) finely shredded mozzarella cheese ¼ cup (1 ounce) grated Parmesan cheese 2 cups mayonnaise 1 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons dried onion flakes ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

Combine the cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, onion flakes and garlic powder in a bowl and mix well. Chill for 30 minutes. Serve with tortilla chips or corn chips. MAKES 10-15 SERVINGS

CINNAMON PECANS 1 cup sugar ½ cup water ¾ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon cinnamon 3 cups pecan halves photo by Matthew Wood courtesy MoblieBayMag.com

Mix the sugar, water, salt and vanilla in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat and cook for 4 minutes. Remove from the heat and add the cinnamon and pecans. Stir until the syrup forms a sugary coating. Bake at 325 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes or until crisp and toasted, stirring every 10 minutes. Spread the pecans in a single layer over parchment paper and let cool. MAKES 12 SERVINGS 38

Going on a quest for the biggest Razorback fan could be a challenge in Hog Country. But after taking one look at this car, it’s not hard to see why its owner would be at the top of any list.

Decked out with Razorback stickers and magnets from headlights to taillights, this unique car certainly makes a statement. It’s easy to spot the Dodge Neon cruising down the streets of Fayetteville, especially with 16 flags waving proudly out its windows. Owner Mary Ebert’s declaration of love for the Razorbacks began with this car in 2004, but her allegiance to the University of Arkansas began much earlier than that.

When her family moved to Northwest Arkansas from Iowa in 1957, Mary was in the fifth grade and instantly became a fan of the Razorbacks. Ever since, her affection for University of Arkansas sports has only grown.

On any given day, from football season to baseball season, you’ll see Mary decked out in Razorback gear herself—from t-shirts to nail art professing her love for the team. But Mary’s passion for the Hogs doesn’t stop at her car or her clothes.

Her apartment is also decorated inside and out. Her favorite possessions?

The bobble heads she collects of past Arkansas coaches such as Coach Broyles, Coach DeBriyn and Coach Van Horn.

Beyond making a good case for her status as the number one Razorback fan, Mary simply hopes to bring joy to others. “It’s my pride and joy. It’s for other people to enjoy—that’s why I do it. I just love my Razorbacks.”
