Meet Darcy

As the new Managing Editor I have trouble containing my excitement when I think about joining this team and the world of publishing. Believe it or not, I have been a neo-natal nurse for seven years! So, this is a huge (and welcomed) life change for me. I’ve been passionate about writing and digital design for as long as I can remember. A couple of years ago, I realized I was in dire need of a creative outlet. So, I created a collaborative lifestyle blog called Hello Luvvy. I immersed myself in writing, posting, editing, photography, networking in our community and managing a team of writers.

My new job at 3W has already exceeded my expectations.

During my first week we were welcomed into the home of Arkansas Razorback Football Coach Bret Bielema and wife Jen. As an Arkansas native and alumna, you can imagine the stars I had in my eyes! Even though the weather is still warm, I think this issue will have you ready to ‘Call Those Hogs’!

Meet Payton

Hi, I’m Payton Bridewell. I grew up in Fayetteville, graduated from Tulane University and worked for Procter & Gamble for five years. I also have a fashion blog, TheWindowShopper.com. About a year ago, I decided to turn my blog into a consulting business.

Through that decision, I’ve been able to pursue new opportunities like styling, public relations, social media marketing, sales and my longtime love of writing.

I’ve known Leslie & Kasie for years through my work with Northwest Arkansas Fashion Week. When they approached me in March about working with the 3W team, I jumped at the chance. I’m thrilled to be contributing to both Trés Lifestyle and 3W magazine as well as the blog.

Northwest Arkansas has been a busy place these last few months! In April, the Washington Regional Medical Center Foundation hosted its annual gala and Eagle Awards at the Walton Arts Center. That same week, the Sunshine School & Development Center held its annual Sunshine Gala at Horton Farms to a sold out crowd! There wasn’t a dry eye in the house after hearing the family of a special-needs child speak about how the school has helped their son.

As everyone knows, April is one of the busiest months in Northwest Arkansas for charity events! We attended the Saving Grace luncheon – Butterflies and Blooms – which is near and dear to our hearts; and of course the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter’s Starlight Gala to hear country music artist Thompson Square inside the John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers. The Children’s Shelter’s gala helps raise about 15 percent of its annual operating budget.

Somehow, the beginning of May brings perhaps the busiest weekend of the entire year. With a record-breaking six events on one night, our team was all over the place taking pictures at events like the Red Cross Celebration of Heroes and the JDRF Hope Gala: Run for the Roses, which was a huge hit at Horton Farms. Guests enjoyed a bourbon tasting while wearing their best derby-inspired attire – all while raising money to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Other fun events in May included Botanical Garden’s Greening of the Garden, St. Joseph’s Men’s Night, Open Avenues Spring Fling and the Boys & Girls Club of Benton County’s gala.

In June the Washington Regional Medical Center held its 23rd annual Friends of Washington Regional Hospice Summer Garden Party. With nearly 500 guests at the special “West Meets South” atmosphere, more than $90,000 was raised.

A new event this year was the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Arkhoma Celebrity Chef Throwdown at Magnolia Gardens in Springdale.

Close to 250 guests enjoyed freshly prepared dishes from local chefs like Rob Nelson of Tusk & Trotter, Vince Pianalto of Bouchee and Jerrmy Gawthrop of 15 Greenhouse Grille – all competing for a chance to win. Then, kids and parents alike danced the afternoon away to Trout Fishing in America.

We can’t forget Youth Bridge’s annual One Boogie event, held at the home of Hershey and Denise Garner. This year’s event was called One Boogie-Two Missions. It was an opportunity to raise money for those facing hunger and homelessness in Northwest Arkansas. The event was hosted by Youth Bridge and Feed Communities. Youth Bridge provides transitional housing for people ages 16 to 23. Be sure to save the date for their next big event on Nov. 13, Starry Starry Night Almost Van Gogh. Of course, June wouldn’t be the same without the Walmart Northwest Arkansas Championship presented by P&G. Read more about that week on the next few pages!

July is typically the slowest month for charity events, but the ALS Corporate Breakfast at Pinnacle Country Club had a huge turnout as always. Walmart’s Chief Merchandising Officer Duncan Mac Naughton challenged guests to exceed fundraising expectations for ALS and raise more money than ever. Also last month, Elizabeth Richardson Center rallied the troops to help raise funds at its annual Beach Bingo Bash. The Children’s Safety Center hosted Dream Big on July 19, while the United Way of Northwest Arkansas helped kids in need of school supplies with its annual Stuff A Bus event.

For the eighth straight year The Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G took Rogers and the surrounding area by storm. As the area’s biggest event and golf tournament, it is no surprise that this display of athleticism and philanthropy was once again a fun-filled time for all.

The week kicked off with the annual General Mills Pairings Party on Tuesday night. The event at John Q. Hammons Center started with the First Tee VIP party where sponsors and supporters of First Tee Northwest Arkansas were honored for all they do to impact the lives of youth in Northwest Arkansas through the game of golf. Following the VIP party, guests were invited to enjoy food, cocktails, and poker tables while the Pro-Am pairings were announced. And as always, Magic Matt kept guests guessing with his fabulous card tricks throughout the evening.

The following evening, at P&G’s Pantene Beautiful Lengths (emceed by Neile Jones and Gisel Ruiz), over 300 people – including five LPGA players – lovingly donated their hair to make wigs for women fighting cancer. The event is always a tournament favorite, and Razorback Football Coach Bret Bielema and his wife Jen were special guests this year.

Bright and early on Thursday morning the Network of Executive Women (N.E.W.) held its fourth annual Women’s Day. This executive breakfast with special guest speakers, Sylvia Ann Hewlett, Gisel Ruiz and Kristin Oliver, focused on providing insights, practical advice and live examples on how to embody the “Executive Presence” women need to succeed.

The official tournament play got underway on Friday featuring 144 of the top women golfers from around the world vying for spots in the tournament and a shot at the $2 million purse. The competition was fierce and exciting throughout the weekend. Crowds gathered at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers to cheer on their favorite ladies.

After the first round Alena Sharp was in the lead with Michelle Wie and Alejandra Llaneza trailing the lead by one shot. Local favorite, Razorback Alum and Rolex Rankings No. 1 Stacy Lewis came in 1 under 70 at 5 shots off the lead. On Saturday after round two it was Michelle Wie holding a two-shot lead. Stacy Lewis bounced back from Friday turning in a 66. Then Sunday it was Stacy Lewis who closed at 65 and a three-day total of 12 under par allowing her to take home the win.

With Stacy being Arkansas Alumna, the crowd truly went (HOG) wild. Lewis stated, “It’s just really, really special to win here.” It was really special for us too Stacy!

While the drama played out on the greens, spectators enjoyed watching the rounds of golf, meeting the players at Autograph Alley and checking out the Walmart Kids’ Center presented by Dove. The 17th hole was once again the “loudest hole in golf,” thanks in large part to the Malibu Party Deck. The tournament proved to be an exciting time for everyone and we can’t wait for next year! n

aving been in Northwest Arkansas for a year now, Coach Bret Bielema and wife Jen sat down to talk with us about life in Northwest Arkansas in a more personal setting – their home.

This has been their first summer with some downtime in nearly four years because they weren’t planning a wedding, moving, or building a house.

The couple is feeling more settled in and gave us their list of local favorite hotspots around Northwest Arkansas.

The couple traveled to Florida to see Jen’s family this summer and also to Illinois to help Bret’s parents celebrate their 54th wedding anniversary. Bret had a tradition (that Jen now joins in on of course) of going to Miami right before football season starts to relax and enjoy the calm before the storm.

COVER STORY As much as they travel, the couple really enjoys being at home. They’re both quick to say they especially love being at home with their dogs. The Yorkies, Lucy and Ricky, are like their kids. Jen often buys Bliss ‘pupcakes’ for the dogs.

Jen says their families are respectful of their busy times during football season. “If we can’t return a phone call immediately, they understand. And now, football season is kind of all year...especially from July to February.

We don’t have personal travel opportunities.”

They also spend as much time outside as they can – drinking coffee on their patio and by their pool. Jen likes working out and says it’s therapeutic for her, and Bret likes to golf.

Bret interjects, “Except well, we always try to take a break and get away somewhere for Spring Break.

The Fred W. Smith Football Center: A look inside the $40 million home of Razorback Football

TRÉS CHIC ast September, the Fred W. Smith Football Center was officially dedicated in front of hundreds of guests as the beautiful new $40 million home of Razorback Football.

It was October 2010, when Athletic Director Jeff Long first announced plans for a new football operations building. At the press conference Long announced that the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation was moving forward with a $10 million challenge grant. At the forefront of the grant was Donald W. Reynolds Foundation chairman, Fred W. Smith.

The 80,000 square-foot facility includes a spacious locker room, team meeting rooms, training room, equipment room, a student-athlete lounge and study area, coaches’ offices, a recruiting reception area and football displays celebrating the tradition of Razorback Football.

ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS NEW BRAND IDENTITY

Respect the Past. Represent the Future.

In addition to the classic running Razorback logo, the university has now introduced the forward facing hog as a complement to the traditional logo. The new hog logo is bolder and more intimidating. As the University of Arkansas continues its partnership with Nike, they decided to streamline the school’s uniform design and logo across the board with all sports. The one that hasn’t changed: the color palette.

Cardinal and white still serve as the primary colors of the Razorbacks. Cardinal has been the primary color for the Razorbacks since the students took it to a vote in 1895. Cardinal elicits a strong emotional response representing strength, leadership and courage. White signifies confidence and honesty.

Before this year, the Razorback uniforms had no consistency in typography or font, but now the new Arkansas Razorbacks logo (pictured here) has a clean, modern look that’s cutting edge. Athletic Director Jeff Long says, “It’s extremely important to have a unified look and branding that goes across all sports - men’s and women’s – and we’re excited to have a graphic identity that will provide that for us.” From football, baseball and track to soccer and volleyball, the Arkansas Razorbacks have a new look to go with their longstanding winning traditions. n

Lindsey is often meeting with brides on Saturdays, so when the Stavelys do get to tailgate they like to be social butterflies and see everyone they can. It’s a treasured time for the couple because Mark played on the team from 1998-2002 (as an outside linebacker/deep snap in Houston Nutt’s first class).

IF THERE’S ONE THING WE LOVE MORE THAN ARKANSAS FOOTBALL, IT’S AN ARKANSAS PARTY...

Luckily, tailgating on game-day combines both of our favorite things. Football season is only a few weeks away and we really wanted to up our tailgate game. So, we called in an expert: Bartus Taylor of Buzz Events.

As the creative mind behind Buzz Event Planning’s design and style, Bartus strives to create an extraordinary atmosphere for his clients based on their original vision. Buzz creates an event that will leave guests feeling inspired. We asked Bartus to help us dress up our tailgate and show us how to keep our guests buzzing about the party, long after the game.

To achieve our trés-chic tailgate, Bartus integrated a few elegant elements into the classic concept. He called on Eventures for the rentals and The Main Event for the catering.

He brought his own chair cushions, arranged the flowers (mums, tulips & gladiolus) himself and used red apples, radishes, pears, greenery and a foam core to craft the centerpieces for the table. The black and white stripes added a pop of modern. Silverware, glass and tablecloths easily added elegance while beers on ice kept the party casual.

With Razorback Football season around the corner it’s time to consider tasty options for the best tailgate party on game day.

To help you, we’ve asked local chefs to share their favorite tailgating treats.

From Cajun inspired recipes to mouth watering pulled pork sliders, your palate and your guests will be thanking you.

Sweet Potato Casserole

SWEET POTATO MIXTURE 3 cups mashed sweet potatoes 1 cup sugar ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 eggs, well beaten 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter

CRUST MIXTURE

PREPARTION

1 cup brown sugar

First, combine Crust Mixture in mixing bowl and hold on the side. Combine Sweet Potato Mixture ingredients into a mixing bowl in the order listed. Combine thoroughly. Pour mixture into buttered baking dish. Sprinkle the surface of the sweet potato mixture evenly with the crust mixture. Bake for 30 minutes at 350°. Allow to set at least 30 minutes before serving.

Spicy Shrimp & Grilled Corn Salad

Jen’s Art of Cooking

Serves 6 | Can be prepared in 45 minutes or less.

INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

6 ears of corn

Brush the corn with some of the additional oil and grill it on a rack set about 6 inches over glowing coals, turning it, for 15 minutes, or until it is golden brown. Let the corn cool until it can be handled. Working over a bowl, with serrated knife cut the kernels from the cobs and with the back of the knife scrape the pulp from the cobs. Brush the shrimp with some of the additional oil and the rub grill them on the rack, turning them, for 6 to 8 minutes, or until they are cooked through, and transfer them to the bowl. Stir in the onion, the jalapeño, feta and the basil.

1/3 cup olive oil plus additional for brushing the corn and shrimp 1 pound medium shrimp (about 25), shelled and deveined 1 Tablespoon of Tequila lime BBQ rub or a smoked paprika BBQ rub.

1 pint of cherry tomatoes sliced in half 1 bell pepper chopped 1 red onion, chopped fine 1 large fresh jalapeño chili including the seeds, minced (wear rubber gloves) 1/3 cup loosely packed fresh basil chopped 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 tablespoon red-wine vinegar 1/2 cup of Mediterranean spiced feta cheese 50

In a small bowl whisk together the lime juice, the vinegar, and salt and pepper to taste, add the remaining 1/3 cup oil in a stream, whisking, and whisk the dressing until it is emulsified. Pour the dressing over the corn mixture and combine the salad well. This recipe can be made 1 day ahead of time.

Can be eaten at room temp or cold.

Pulled Pork Sliders with Pecan Brown Sugar Sauce

SAUCE 1 pounds butter

5 jalapenos, ribbed with seeds removed

PORK ROAST

1/2 teaspoon minced garlic

1 bell pepper - diced finely

3 1/2 cups water

2 cups chopped pecans

1 medium onion - diced finely

Salt

2 cups brown sugar

2 celery ribs - diced finely

Pepper

1/4 cup honey

1/4 cup green onion - diced

Garlic Powder

2 teaspoons salt

3 pounds pork butt

Vegetable Oil

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 teaspoons creole mustard

Melt 1lbs of butter in sauce pan. Add jalapenos and minced garlic and sautĂŠ for 2 minutes. Add chopped pecans, brown sugar, and honey. Cook until brown sugar is dissolved. Add salt and cayenne pepper.

When adding sauce to crock pot with pork, add creole mustard. Stir well.

Season pork butt with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Heat a skillet with 3 tsp of vegetable oil. Sear pork on all sides. Place chopped veggies in crock pot and place pork on top. Cover with water. Cook on slow (low) setting for 6 hours. Remove pork from the crock pot and drain. Reserve veggies and 1 cup of stock from crock pot. Shred pork. Add pork, veggies, and 1 cup of pork stock back to crock pot. Add sauce mix and reheat. Serve on toasted Hawaiian sweet rolls with fresh made pickles. We prefer Gunderpickles, a local pickling company.

Pickled Egg Salad FOR THE PICKLED EGGS 6 whole eggs (hard boiled & peeled) 1 pint water 1 pint rice vinegar 1 tsp mustard seed

FOR THE PICKLED EGG SALAD

1 tsp black pepper (whole)

6 pickled eggs

1 sp allspice (whole)

½ cup mayonnaise

2 ea bay leaves

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

½ cup sugar

1 teaspoon kosher salt

¼ cup salt

½ teaspoon Dijon mustard

Combine everything except for the eggs. Place in a pot on the stove and warm until sugar and salt are dissolved. Allow the pickling liquid to cool and place eggs in the liquid. Let set for at least 24 hours.

Grate eggs on a cheese grater, medium sized. Mix the rest of the ingredients into eggs. When serving, use paprika to garnish.

Carmelized Onion, Gruyere Cheese & Bacon Dip

INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

1 tablespoon butter

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.

1 tablespoon olive oil 3 1/2 cups chopped onion 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 2 ounces Gruyere cheese, shredded and divided 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives, divided

Heat butter and olive oil in a large cast-iron skillet over medium heat.

Add onions and salt to the pan and sautĂŠ 5 min, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes or until the onions are a deep golden brown. Cool slightly.

1/3 cup mayonnaise 1/3 cup sour cream 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 6 bacon slices, cooked and crumbled

Reserve 2 tablespoons cheese. Combine cheese, caramelized onions, 1 tablespoon chives, and the remaining ingredients in a medium bowl.

Taste and adjust seasonings if necessary. Transfer the mixture to a 1 quart glass or ceramic baking dish (I used and 8-inch cast-iron skillet) coated lightly with cooking spray. Sprinkle with reserved 2 tablespoons cheese. Bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly. Sprinkle with remaining 1 tablespoon chives. n

Ingredients

1 oz. Rock Town Arkansas Bourbon Whiskey 1/2 packet of Crystal Light On the Go Lemonade

2 oz. water 1 oz. ginger ale 2 tsp. of grenadine

Preparation

In a glass, mix half of the Crystal Light to-go packet and 2 oz. of water over ice. Now add the bourbon, ginger ale, and grenadine. Stir until everything is well combined. If you want to make your drink sweeter, add additional grenadine. Lastly, add cherries to garnish, shout “Woo Pig Sooie!” and enjoy. n
