Jia Hui Charles Ang Therapeutic Textiles

I have designed a sneaker-boot with massage insoles. This design aims to alleviate social anxiety and stress through foot reflexology. The concept utilises acupuncture points situated close to areas on the body that are prone to stress, while also exploring comfort, utility and versatility in contemporary textiles and wearable products. This project offers a gentle, non-electrical approach to contemporary footwear for the younger demographic.

Through my project I have explored the concept of personal safety and protection for women. I have designed a protective tool that helps women to feel more comfortable, confident and safe. The tool is designed to fit comfortably in the hand while also looking discreet.

My product intends to give more confidence to the user when they may need to defend themselves.

I enjoy the idea that almost every child has played with building blocks while growing up. Through my project, I have designed a toy in the form of a block that explores the communication of emotions through animation when it is picked up and played with. I used a cork core and a wooden shell but this design could employ other materials such as plastics and metals as well.

Honey Birch Obsession

I have designed a series of slipcast ceramic vessels, based on the forms of four rocks taken from my hometown in China and my childhood home in the UK. Fuelled by diasporic obsession, I undertook a process of obsessive exploration to find meaning within these rocks. By placing the vessels on a pedestal, changing their context, and through precise duplication, these sentimental objects find new significance and purpose.

Reign Charbit Modular Tote Bag Organiser + Trowel/Secateurs

My project is centred around the organization of personal items. My product is a modular system of opentop, item specific compartments that are easily attached and removed from a rectangular panel using Velcro.

This panel gets inserted into a tote bag, enabling the user to keep their belongings organised and easily accessible, encouraging the user to be thoughtful while choosing items when they leave the house. The centre panel is constructed from 5mm Perspex and the individual compartments are moulded using vacuum formed PVC.

This product is a multi-purpose garden tool, combing the functional aspects of both a trowel and secateurs. When closed, the two blades form a concave digging surface. By opening the safety latch, the two blades spring open, enabling the user to cut.

I enjoy the way a pencil is such a recognisable, mass-produced, inexpensive and yet vital product.

I appreciate the way the pencil is used in everyday-life and used in every country across the world, by people of all ages. I aim to convey this importance by elevating the pencil within my design, while the use of copper and ceramics raise the material value. I aim to encourage the user to recognize and enjoy the value of the pencil through the design of my vessel.

In today’s society, younger generations are less able to find affordable housing and they have to move home more often. Furniture design needs to be affordable, flexible and lightweight to reflect this issue.

I have developed a multi-purpose, modular shelving and storage system, which is adjustable to the user’s needs. With a focus on sustainable materials and waste-efficient manufacturing, I chose plywood as the most appropriate material.

What happens when design is led by chance rather than control? Through my project I am exploring how situations can be composed to allow space for coincidental occurrences.

I am interested in what can be gained through letting these chance discoveries shape design processes.

I am interested in how design for children needs to appeal to both the child and the parent or carer. As the parent of carer is generally the person responsible for purchasing the product, the product needs to appeal to them. I decided to design tableware that was both playful in its shape and also sophisticated through the material and making techniques.

I have used a traditional Chinese method for linking the wooden tableware. Wood is a natural material and will look beautiful in the home.

The form of the tableware is playful and will appeal to the child.

I collaborated with The Chelsea Physic Garden on this project. I explored tools that are used for gardening to encourage growing your own plants and vegetables. I explored sustainability and the role of the product designer to consider how materials and resources are used in today’s society. I used recycled materials for the production of my set of garden tools. I believe designers need to promote sustainability through their design approach, to create a long-term impact for future generations.

Niall Fahy-Holland Significant Superstitions

I am inspired and fascinated by the belief that people have in superstition and the supernatural, a belief system that is based on irrational view rather than scientific evidence.

My design uses a tridecagon, a thirteen-sided polygon, to produce a series of thirteen vases all produced in ceramics. These simple vases offer users with superstition and Triskaidekaphobia, the fear and phobia of the number thirteen, reassurance and the confidence to look at a positive side to the number thirteen.

Paulina Gorniak Slingshot

My project explores the way children spend more time at home today, using tablets and technology for play. I wanted to tackle this issue through the design of a toy that encourages children to spend more time outdoors. The child has to find an appropriate twig to create the components needed to put the slingshot together, encouraging the child to look closely at nature. The toy is pocket sized and easy to carry around when playing. When the game is finished the twig is removed and the toy is stored in a pocket, a new adventure starts each time the child goes out, sourcing a new twig and looking closely again.

Malvika Gupta Vessel

This project consists of four vessels specifically designed for chillies using ceramic and wood. Each vessel contains chilli in various states: fresh, flaked or dried. I have explored the surface of each ceramic vessel creating a unique surface pattern.

The chilli flake sprinkler has different sized holes to allow for different chilli heat. One vessel has a chopping board lid to cut and add chillies.

I took inspiration from my Indian culture exploring how dried chilli’s are crushed with a pestle and mortar, and how chilli is measured using a wooden spoon.

Jan Herbst Contemporary Consumption: Eating and Dining

I believe that lunch habits have changed for the worse as readypacked meals are increasing in popularity. Although a supermarket lunch can be convenient, it is unsustainable, unhealthy and the cost adds up when bought regularly.

Aiming to change this behaviour, my lunch box encourages the user to share food, either outside at a picnics or inside during a lunch break with friends or colleagues. I would like to encourage the concept of a lunch rota where each person is responsible in providing food on a different day of the week.

Nat Hodge Expanding Hammock

I have designed a sustainable expanding hammock, which has various sizes to fit into the space that you have. Made from hemp and organic cotton, the hammock can be used in three different sizes by simply clipping together or unclipping the eyelets. As the user goes through life, the hammock can be found in a small balcony flat or a large garden by changing the size as required.

My project started when I noticed how people sit when they are working for long periods of time. I noticed that people move and change position: sometimes sitting and leaning back and forth and sometimes standing for a while. I decided to design a chair that is good for your posture through the introduction of two positions.

The chair is simply pushed back and forwards from one position to the other. The chair can be used for sitting and also standing and the introduction of the knee and leg pads allow leaning in both positions.

I have designed a multi-functional wall mounted clothes airer. When not in use the airer can be easily positioned horizontally to use as a shelf. I am interested in how design can be utilised to reduce the efforts of keeping your home clean and tidy.

I aim to encourage people to enjoy being lazy and save their energy for socialising and having fun away from home.

Through my project I have explored the importance of relaxing in daily life. I have employed texture, tactility, sound and play as a way to relieve stress and increase happiness through the design of a toy. The toy is made from a soft, brightly coloured and tactile neoprene fabric. The toy can be handled and squashed and also shaken to create to relaxing cathartic sound. Children of all ages can enjoy this toy along with adults in their busy work environments.

My project explores design for people who love music. The design features wireless charging technology that is housed in the charging box that is designed for carrying easily when you are outdoors. The speakers create a surround sound speaker system that is perfect for enjoying music with friends outdoors. The speakers are placed by simply throwing to the ground creating a surround sound experience that is casual but fun.

Leyu (Enigma) Li Individual Working or Studying Space

Through my project I have explored the concept of working from home.

I wanted to design a flexible study space that could be used in a domestic environment to create both work surfaces and storage areas. My design can be altered to create different heights for people to work on while they are standing.

There are many combinations and configurations that the user can choose to create the desk and storage spaces. With more people working from home today, I think it is important to design innovative and beautiful furniture that reflects the users creativity in their home space.

I have explored the concept of how we carry our essential everyday products through my project. I am interested in items such as combs, bottle openers, keys and items that end up in a mess in your pocket.

I wanted to create a product that would house all these necessary items neatly in your pocket, a product that would help you to remember everything that you need during the day. I like the idea of designing something that could be used by anyone on the move, a small product that could make the lives of people easier when they have a busy lifestyle. I think young and old and also people working or studying could use my product. Design for all!

A clothes drying rack designed for compact spaces. It can be attached in many ways, for example to a table or a window with the help of clamp.

The wooden components are different sizes and can be pulled out according to the size of the clothes you want to dry. When not in use, it is flat-packed, thus occupying less space.

Britain’s iconic ‘Rich Tea’ biscuit is considered a quintessential household item and is at the heart of our daily tea-drinking rituals.

Fascinated by the social behaviour that follows the ceremonial nature of ‘avin’ a cuppa tea serves as inspiration for the adapted concept of sharing biscuits.

My goal was to design a product that will help and encourage my client to pursue an activity related to her heritage. I learned about her background, studied her personality, beliefs, and hobbies, and was able to identify an unmet need. With a love for textiles and tradition, my client couldn’t bring her loom from her home in India. Furthermore, living in university halls with the limited space and using a loom is problematic. My product is a compact loom made from a native Indian cheddar tree that is easy to carry in an everyday bag.

Catarina Rio The Unique Journey of Fish: From Sea to Plate

Fishing is a big traditional activity in my country, Portugal, and I’ve noticed how limited is the access to fresh fish in urban areas nowadays. To engage with this problem, I designed a delivery system to encourage and facilitate people to eat more fish.

Through an app., the user is able to buy fresh fish and ingredients from a chosen recipe. Everything is delivered in biodegradable packaging made from bioplastic.

Mitalee Nag Arma Lamp

This project explored the theme of Biomimicry. The lamp design mimics the body of an armadillo. The stand is made of oak wood in contrast to the opaque white finish of the shade.

Designed for use in offices, homes and hotels, the lamp creates a warm glow and atmosphere.

Naz Ozkes Penne Pasta Vessel

This is a pasta container made specifically for penne pasta. The materials used are ceramic, wood and cork, which enhance the simplicity of the product. Through the formation of this piece, I tried new methods such as slip casting and making tableware out of wood for the first time. This product is for domestic environments and likely to be stored in the kitchen area, where it will be used by the cook.

I have developed finger cutlery following my exploration of food in everyday life. Food is taken for granted and undervalued by those who have access to it anytime.

This led me to explore how I could combat this by making the process of eating more challenging and difficult, forcing the user to focus on the food itself and ultimately increase the appreciation and experience of the food they are eating.

I am exploring the relationship between objects and memory. I have been investigating what objects people keep because they have sentimental value and how they keep them. Having found out that most mementos are quite small I designed a very narrow wooden shelf to store and exhibit these objects.

Small mementos are placed inside and blurred by the translucent front panel giving them the foggy quality of memories.

I focused on enhancing the experience of travelling on the London Underground. My proposal is to project images of the route of the train above ground onto the tube walls so that this can be viewed from the train windows as the train is travelling. This way commuters have more of a sense where they are in the city whilst they are underground.

My design is about user experience, I used emerging technology, including interactive Virtual Reality (VR) to make help illustrate my idea.

This is Plant Label Maker which crafts twigs, sticks and flora into plant labels or the garden or for house plants. Sustainably coppiced English yew is combined with reclaimed Sapele Mahogany. The palm grip shaved out of Yew houses an agricultural pencil, whilst the mahogany provides the strength for the blade and keeps the fingers safe.

The label maker helps avoid the use of plastic labels but also promotes a sense of adventure whilst foraging for the perfect twig. This was a response to a brief to design a product for The Chelsea Physics Garden Gift Shop.

My grandfather experiences numbness in his hands and loss of coordination due to Peripheral Neuropathy, a condition that develops when nerves in the body’s extremities are damaged. The final outcome is a cross-body shopping bag that distributes its weight through a leather strap and webbing. The inclusive, hands-free design with adjustable strap and expandable drawstring opening allows the bag to be filled whilst being worn and removed with limited dexterity.

This slip cast vessel has been designed to store matches. It includes a strike surface, and compartments for new and spent matches. Overall an elegant way to bring match sticks back into use.

I am exploring the tradition of sharing and displaying boiled sweets during special occasions in Turkish culture. This set of vessels express the playfulness of boiled sweets by rotatable cups, reflecting the motion of swings in a playground.

Nikolai Sparrow Flying

This project is about how the perception of the word ‘flying’ can be associated with the context of history and enthusiasm that fostered technological progress to an extent that some technologies appeared long before their time.

The outcome is a desk fan with a Da Vinci blade. The main materials are wood and chipboard, chosen to be durable and not harmful for the environment. Major processes I used were prototyping and testing. When I attached the blade, I couldn’t tell why the model was not standing still.

I made a hypothesis that this was due to the form or the physics behind the blade design. I made a foundation shoe of sponge and sandpaper so the vibration doesn’t propel the fan

around. It can point horizontally and diagonally depending on the user and the height of the surface its placed on. The fan is made for office workers during hot, dry weather.

I want to find a way to slow down the pace of people’s lives so that they can enjoy their life more. Finally, I used seashell as inspiration to made a set of relatively primitive tableware to reduce the user’s efficiency of eating, and enhance the enjoyment of dining, in the hope that people can find their own pace of life.

I am exploring ways to collect, organize and transport coins. When travelling, I realized that coins are the hardest form of money to sort out; as each piece looks very similar.

Thus, I designed a coin vessel out of ceramics that can contain coins when propped up, but also transforms into a leather pouch to enhance the use of coins in everyday life.

Nowadays, more and more traditional skills are disappearing. With this product, makers can record their making process and increase the quality and the quantity of theirs works improving their businesses.

The aim is that by raising awareness of craft skills and the profitability of craft making, there will be more youngsters willing to learn the traditional skills.

I am interested in resolving the harmful impact of everyday screen use by creating tools to aid more positive phone use habits. By considering the everyday user experience, my design develops a unit which stores your phone during a work or study session. Through a companion app., the user can curate which messages and notifications are seen during breaks, via a projected interface. This aims to discourage constant phone checking habits and avoid distractions.

My design are two tables for use in a student cafeteria. The only material I have used is wood, because I wanted it to be as simple as possible. The table itself has two layers, the top layer can spin around the table with a push, and users can take the top layer off from the table to use it as a tray to get food or for dumping trash. In the bottom layer there is a storage space for users belongings.

The two tables can match to each other perfectly like two water drops when seen from the top. My project was exploring how people with social phobias interact with one another.

The design provides a chance to choose - whether to be alone or to join others.

Wensi Yang Relaxation

The aim of my project is evolution of existing types of objects and to design my own products which make relaxation activities more effective. My focus is on people who enjoy music but are bothered by messy earphone cables. My final products are wooden earphone cable storage which help to roll the cables up and store them properly. The appearance and the surface of the products are based on fruits, it’s more attractive and the texture helps to reduce stress.

Pinar Yazici Hexagon Table

This product is a hexagon table that is made out of six triangular tables.

The aim is to bring people together to regain the loss of close community interactions that historically helped us all. It is designed to put together when friends come over, to sit on the floor and de-stress through human interaction. The tables can be used alone as a side/coffee table or can be stacked up and stored in a corner to save space.

This set of building blocks aims to encourage children to assemble models by using their creativity and imagination. Nearly 50 blocks are provide to give more opportunities for children to build. These blocks allow children to practice their creative ability and at the same time improve their manual skills.
